T was carnage on the Upper Highway roads this weekend, with accidents spilling over onto Monday morning. According to authorities, 10 people were killed and 26 injured in five separate accidents. In the most recent incident on Monday, a man was killed and three others injured on the N3 highway near Shongweni. ER24 paramedic Russel Meiring said a truck apparently tried to overtake another and instead, crashed into the back of the vehicle. The collision sent both trucks through a barrier and down the embankment. “The driver of one of the trucks suffered moderate injuries and was trapped inside the vehicle. The occupants of the second truck did not sustain any injuries.” Meiring said while paramedics were attending to the incident, a second collision occurred in the opposite direction between another two trucks. “The driver of one of the trucks was killed and two others were critically injured when the two collided.” MORE ON PAGE 3

Former Fever sports’ editor Quintin van Jaarsveld took the prize for sports’ writer of the year and was a finalist in the feature-writing category. Other finalists included South Coast Fever journalist Candyce Krishna, who made it to the top 10 for journalist of the year, and Desiree Erasmus, who made it to the top three for columnist of the year. The South Coast Fever also made it to the top 10 for “best corporate-owned free sheet”. A record number of entries — 750 — were received for this year’s competition from local newspapers, community radio sta-

tions and community television stations. MDDA (Media Development and Diversity Agency)and Sanlam host theawardsto“encourage excellence and to reward meritorious work in community journalism”. ORE than 450 pupils at Forestview Primary in Waterfall signed up for the “My Little Fingers” project last Tuesday, The project involved taking pupils’ fingerprints and personal information for a database to make it easier for authorities to identify them should they go missing. The project, aimed at children up until the age of 18, will also keep photos as data in schools, and with Pink Ladies and police stations, so as to make information available as soon as a child is reported missing. Hillcrest police spokesperson France Mkhize advised parents to contact the police as soon as they realise that their child is missing, and not to wait for 24 hours. Mkhize also said residents waste a tremendous amount of time searching for a missing child before they contact the police. Pink Ladies director Dessie

Reechnor said they have noticed that some families do not have photos of their children which makes it difficult for all concerned to look for their missing child. "The information will be stored in the child's personal file at his or her school. “In the event that they go missing, the information will be used to create a flyer that will be distributed electronically via social media. “Social media has been an essential tool in finding missing children in the past, and we have had excel-

lent results,” she added. Waterfall Crime Watch Steven King, one of the main contributors in bringing the project to the Upper Highway area, said the project was designed to develop a sense of unity between the SAPS and the community. "We hope it will teach children that police are there to protect them," said King and urged schools and parents to get involved in the project. For more information, contact King on 082 920 5799.

Horticulturalist Chris Dalzel will be a guest speaker at the Friends of Kloof Library Forum.

KALISHA NAICKER INTERNATIONALLY-ACCLAIMED horticulturalist Chris Dalzel will be a guest speaker at the next Friends of Kloof Library Forum on Thursday 5 June at 6pm in the Kloof Junior Primary hall to which the community is invited. Dalzell will offer insight into “Local is Lekker: Flowering plants of South Africa”. Thistalkwilltakeguestsonacouchtriparound South Africa experiencing the wonder of the floral kingdom and all the nearly 20 000 flowering plants South Africa has on its doorstep. Speaking to the Hillcrest Fever, Dalzel said his love for nature dates back to the eighties and he is proud to be able to give back to his community in this manner. “In 1988 I won a scholarship to study in the field and at the world famous Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvannia, in the United States and that is where my love of botanic gardens began,” he said. After his studies in 1990, he returned to South Africa and took up a position at the Durban Botanic Gardens in charge of special collections. Over the next 20 years he travelled extensively both locally and internationally in a pursuitofturningtheDurbanBotanicGardens

into a world-class garden. In 2010 Dalzel left the gardens after 27 years with the city council to take up a new position in Singapore as assistant director of gardens development in the building of the new 54 hectare, $1 billion Gardens by the Bay. For two years he travelled to the U.S. Mexico, Ecudaor, Australia, South Africa, Thailand, Bali and Indonesia collecting plants for this new garden. Once the gardens opened in June 2012 Dalzel returned to South Africa and was offered a position by Superclean to head the landscaping division. Dalzel said that he is excited about the projects in the Upper Highway area and will be offering knowledge on gardening and beautifying verges at the forum talk. Jill Storrar, the forum public relations officer, urged residents to attend. “We urge homeowners to take just an hour of their time to support us with their attendance, and everyone will benefit from the information. “We hope they rush off to get their verge looking better, which is our ultimate aim.” Tickets for the talk are available from Kloof Library on 031 764 7543. Cost is R50 for non-members or R35 for members of Friends.

HEN the famous cock’s crow resonates in PietermaritzburgonSunday, one of the runners at the start of the 2014 Comrades Marathon will be Highway resident Antony Clapham. His connection to the race is historical as his great-grandfather, Vic Clapham, wasthefounderofComrades in 1921. Antony recalls how his forefather’s visionbecamearealityafterbeinginthe South African World War. “He was amazed at the distance soldiers had endured, and having heard of the “stock exchange walk” from London to Brighton, had no doubt that these men could take on the challenge of running from Pietermaritzburg to Durban,” Antony told Fever. When Vic approached the League of Comrades of the great war, and then the athletics hierarchy of the time in Pietermaritzburg, “they thought he was out of his mind about the typeofeventhewantedtopulloff”Antonysaid. After four years of perseverance the League of Comrades finally gave him the go-ahead to stage the first race in 1921. Vic, however, never ran the Comrades. “However his son — also Vic — attempted a down-run in the thirties, but he bailed and never went back to complete another one. “I'm the only family member so far to finish one down and one up race — in 2012 and 2013.” said Antony. Antony said he only realised his link to the Comrades beginnings in the nineties when he saw a TV programme documenting the history of the race. As he prepares for his third race Antony says: “I'll continue to run for as long as I possibly can and at the same time raise funds for a charity that is close to my heart — Ubuntu Community Chest. “It is a reputable non-profit organisation that uses funds to support various beneficiaries. “One hundred percent of the funds raised is 100% distributed back to the community. “The charity is also linked to the social movement — ‘I wear red socks on Fridays’ — of which I'm an active member.” This organisation was founded by a South African war veteran. There are also connections to the founder of the Unogwaja Challenge, a which has a strong link to the Comrades from a charity perspective. Another famous name linked to the early days of this ultra-marathon is Phil MastersonSmith, affectionately known as “Unogwaja”, meaning “hare” in Zulu. He was involved in two of the closest finishes in Comrades in the early thirties. In 1931, at the age of 19, Masterson-Smith became the youngest Comrades winner.

Antony Clapham, with his Comrades Marathon medals, says he is ready for the starter’s gun on Sunday to signal the beginning of the 2014 Comrades Marathon.

In 1933, when he couldn’t afford the train farefromCapeTowntoPietermaritzburgforthe Comrades - he cycled more than 1 700 kilometres, then ran the race to finish 10th. Now the Unogwaja Challenge — a 10-day cycle, followed by running the Comrades on day 11 — is a charity platform which works with Amabeadibeadi, the official Comrades Marathon platform. It consists of the following recognised charities — Pink Drive, the Community Chest, Wildlands Trust, The Sports Trust, World Vision and the Starfish Greathearts Foundation. These athletes have to raise a minimum of R5 000 for their chosen charity by 5 May and also run a qualifier. Antony, who runs for Natal Carbineers Athletic Club, is hoping for a sub-11-hour finish.

Stupid people. They walk among us O

VER the last week, the news has been full of stories of idiocy, both locally and further afield. Last week, the Durban North Fever’s website ran the story of a domestic worker who allegedly poisoned the uMhlanga family who had recently employed her. More recent updates to the story reveal that she did this in an effort to ensurethatthefamily would love her as one of their own, and never fire her. This “muthi”, which Thembi seemed to believe would endear her to the family, may well see her become someone’s maid in a prison cell. Speaking of muthi, a couple of intellectually challenged crooks recently did business with a sangoma who told them that a particular potion would render them invisible. Upon proceeding to break into a business’s premises with the intention of doing a little clandestine shopping, a neighbour happened to see the trusting trio, and alerted authorities. When police arrived, the three laid down on the ground and played dead, trusting in the placebo effect of their fake pharmaceuticals. I hope that sangoma had the decency to go and bail them out. Nedbank Cup winners, Orlando Pirates decided the best way to celebrate their victory was to cover their junk (thankfully) and pose, with the

STEPH MCLENNAN steph@expressmedia.co.za

trophy, for a naked selfie in the changing rooms. The picture then made its way onto social media, as these things have a habit of doing, landing them in a spot of bother with their sponsors. Nedbank, of course, could do a Nandos on us in advertising terms and find the funny side – transparent business practices could be taken to a whole new level with bareback banking. The age of technology has ushered in a whole new spectrum of ways to get caught with your pants down. A life orientation teacher in Gauteng has been suspended this week after accidentally broadcasting porn to a classroom full of pupils. If you’re going to watch porn in the classroom, there are several checks you need to do first, including ensuring that no pupils are lined up at your desk waiting to speak to you, and that your laptop is definitely not connected to the classroom’s projector. Moving abroad, an American teenager named Elliott Rodger went on a shooting rampage which resulted in the loss of seven lives, including his own. Not only did he die a virgin - ironic in light of the alleged cause of his action being his invisibility to women - but he is now the cause of the heartbreak of seven families.

IF you ask any scientist why they do what they do, you will obviously get varying answers. An undergraduate might tell you something very different to a post doctorate student – who at this stage would have asked him or herself the same question with increasing frequency over the years. I could run out of op-ed space explaining the reasons why science is important in our lives, but for the purpose of this column I will only tell you that it is to vanquish ignorance and exercise a healthy dose of skepticism. Too many of us are victims of pseudoscience, myths, misconceptions and incorrect use of science thanks to marketing ploys. Ignorance can be easily overcome, but if you throw a dose of ego into the mix, you have a misguided sense of self-preservation when it comes to “touchy” issues such as creationism, vaccination, evolution, alternative medicine and nutritional information. Thankfully, we can save ourselves big headaches if we apply the simplest tenet of science, which boils down to “assume nothing, question everything”. Science journalism exists not only as a fact-checking tool, but as a standard by which we practice healthy skepticism - not cynicism - to better ourselves and others intellectually. It is unfortunate therefore that science stories do not hold a lot of weight in terms of editorial space in many national and indeed local papers in South Africa. Science stories have to compete with sports and politics, with the latter being in great supply. As a science advocate, it is my

duty to try to convince you to like (or at least care about) science, but it is not a simple task, and after all, a sports’ journalist doesn’t need to convince sports’ fans why they should like sports. Writing science articles is not easy, and given the demands made on small news teams, journalists usually find themselves with ridiculous schedules and little or no social life. This makes it even more difficult tofind personal time to write about science, which many editors are loathe to accept as the write-up may not have as much pulling power as an accident or political scandal. But it’s not only about the pulling power when it comes to non-scientific articles; science can be intimidating to the uninitiated. I would love to tell you that science is all about the discovery of some wonder material or newly discovered giant killer chicken or the advent of a space rock on a collision course with KZN, but this is very rarely the case. Of course, stories like this do exist, and you can and should read about them on the net. Some of my favourite reputable sites include “I F*cking Love Science” and Phil Plait’s “Bad Astronomy”. Some of the best science writing in the world can also be found at National Geographic’s “Phenomena”. In a country and a province where science education is still far below the global benchmark, it is time for us to consciously abandon our fear of science. We need to fall in love with the wonder of science, but also be careful to avoid “bumper-sticker” science, as one of South Africa’s foremost science journalists (and author of Searching African Skies) Sarah Wild once put it. I encourage you to take the plunge into the deep, beautiful and mysterious world of science. You won’t regret it. Sibusiso can be contacted at zulunews4@feveronline.co.za

THIS May was all about mothers at Hillcrest Corner. On Saturday 10 May, Hillcrest Corner gave mothers a real treat with a workshop hosted by Joani Mitchell of MasterChef SA, who showed off her chopping skills, gave lunch-box ideas and a cooking demonstration on how to prepare simple three-course meals. Numbers were limited for the workshop which catered for 12 mums in each of the four classes. In addition to learning cooking skills and picking up useful tips, mothers also received food-related goodie bags. Hope House founder Sonia Swinton said the organisation was co-founded by Lynne Pieterse and herself in 2007. “We are a non-profit Christian home caring for abandoned babies from newborns to toddlers. We started as part of the Pinetown Presbyterian Church’s New Hope Ministry, with the intention of giving mothers who are unable to care for their babies other options rather than to abort or abandon them. “Babies who are given up for adoption are placed in our care, waiting to be united with their ‘forever families’,” she said. “As part of our outreach pro-

ORU Health and Weightloss Centre is the brainchild of Dr. Estelle Frost , who is committed to serving the community with holistic and natural health care and creating an awareness of the advantages of natural health products. Frost has a PhD in Alternative Health, and her range of supplements and products are 100% natural and can be used to treat or prevent various illnesses. These products contain no fillers, chemicals or other substances. Clients are treated on an individualbasisdependingonwhattheirbody requires. There are specific weight loss packages developed for each individual according to his or her needs. With Koru’s QRM analyser, a health scan is done, which detects early cell abnormalities, deficiencies, cholesterol, blood sugar problems and the like in the human body. Speaking to the Hillcrest Fever Frost said that as a child her dream was to of follow the path of homeopathy. “When my first child was born, she developed a rare life-threatening disease called Igtiosis,” she said.

Staying safe and warm this winter THE days have become shorter and the nights longer and colder. This means that winter has crept in. Although the best way to keep away from the blistering cold is to stay snug and warm in bed, it's not always possible in the real world. Winterdoesnothavetobemiserable if you do the little things to keep the cold out. Food There's a notion that cold temperatures enhance your appetite. Many of the reasons for this being true are not based on scientific facts, but there are certain foods that can help keep you warm, especially when you're at work. Instead of the typical summer salads, rather eat hearty vegetable dishes such as soups with vegetables such as carrots and potatoes. Keep a flask with warm beverages at the office to occasionally warm up your core. Clothing When you hear the word “clothing”, you tend to imagine the

“Witnessing her suffer and being in and out of ICU, made us want to find a way to heal her.” It is then that Frost put pen to paper, and graduated with her BSC in Natural Health and Herbalism. With the aid of herstudiesofnatural herbal remedies, she was able to aid in her daughter's healing. “I love what I’m doing and waited a long time to fulfill my dream of helping people in a natural way - medicine only goes so far, and all the chemicals normally causes other problems in the body,” she said. Frost’s dream for the future is to own a health shop where she can offer natural products to the community on a larger scale. zen toes are never easy to deal with, so stock up on socks to wear with your shoes and some to wear to bed. This winter may not be too hard to bear if you look after yourself. Safety Be mindful of fire prevention and safety in your home. Firstly, don't leave burning candles unattended and make sure that you have working smoke alarms. If you are making use of a gas heater, ensure that you have it tested before using it because pipes perish over time and could cause gas leaks. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have some form of ventilation in the room with a lit gas heater to avoid carbon monoxide from building up. The best way to do this is to leave a window open in the room.

Health, one step at a time

>> ‘My aim is not to be an alternative to trainers and coaches, but to provide them with individual programmes for their clients’ KALISHA NAICKER

ILLCREST resident Patrick Wynne, who is well known in the horse racing circles for having ridden 9 000 races and won 900, including the Durban July, has launched a new business called AirFitness. Air-Fitness provides training programmes for the amateur through to theprofessionalathlete.Itoffersvaluable data for fitness fanatics and personal trainers as well as someone who has just started exercising to lose weight and get fit. Wynne brought the Air-Fitness technology from GermanytoSouthAfricalessthen18months ago and it's a first for this country. It is a leading global fitness diagnostic tool which highlights the optimum speed and level at which to train, based on the individual's heart rate. The Air-Fitness test, which takes an hour, measures the candidate indoors, under-load by means of a treadmill or an exercise bike. The load is gradually increased at two minute intervals with breath analysis

suggested optimal training zones for weight loss, fat burning, stamina and improvement of fitness,'' explains Wynne. The three training zones are - an easy zone for maximum fat burning, a medium training zone and then a fast anaerobic zone for maximum exertion. Minimum and maximum heart rate levels are provided for each zone. Every test is unique to that individual and can be applied to whatever sport or activity they do. According to Wynne they have tested squash players, swimmers, runners, mixed martial arts fighters, cyclists and people who simply aim to maximise their fat burning potential during a brisk walk. The Air-Fitness evaluation includes an accurate assessment of one’s body mass index, an indication of the number of calories their body burns under-load, and at rest, and whethercarbohydratesorfatsarebeing burned. Wynne says that burning fat rather than carbohydrates, which are short term energy resources, is thewaytogoforathletesinparticular.

Those who have completed a test and begun training and eating as suggested by the Air-Fitness team are encouraged to return for a retest after three months. The follow up results of previously tested candidates have shown a marked improvement when compared with their initial test results. "The correct training, matched to individual performance, is not only the most effective way to reach sporting and fitness goals but also the best way to avoid injuries and burn out,'' is the message which Wynne drives home. So far, Wynne 's business has grown by word of mouth but he now intends to expand marketing efforts and is targeting gyms, personal trainers and coaches. "My aim is not to be an alternative to trainers and coaches but to provide themwithindividualprogrammesfor their clients, which they themselves can monitor,'' he concludes. For more information contact Patrick Wynne on 072 617 1003 or Claire Harms on 082 056 2044.

Kloof High QUIZ masters

>> Pupils aim for first prize FEVER REPORTER

T

EAMS from Kloof High have proved their worth in the recent Minquiz and Eco Quiz. Three grade 12 pupils participated in the Minquiz at UKZN Edgewood campus where they were joined by various schools. The first round of the quiz involved individual pupils answering science questions in a written test. Based on the individual scores, five schools then went through to the second round after eliminating Westville Boys’ and Girls’, Hillcrest High, and Danville Girls’. The next round was an oral quiz for the teams where everyone answered a question simultaneously. In this round Kloof High tied for second place with Crawford, but lost

to Crawford by one point after many tie-breaker questions. In the end Star College was placed first, followed by Crawford, Kloof High, St Mary's and St Anne's, making Kloof the top government school in the quiz. In the Eco-Quiz at New West Secondary, 65 schools from the greater Durban area participated which consisted of six rounds of general knowledge and organic farming questions. Kloof was placed in the top four along with Crescentview, Kingsway and New West Secondary. In the oral quiz against Kingsway, Kloof High lost by 30 points to 32 and so ended up tied in third place with Crescentview. They won R2 000 for the school and R600 each.

Hartenberg Occasional Riesling 2012 The candyfloss, lanolin and perfumed notes on the nose give way to a rich, sweet and sour entry with a floral and honeyed mid-palate that has both balance and complexity. The residual sugar, although subtly noticeable, contributes extra fullness and richness to the palate.Thisisaqualitywinethatoffers great value and food-pairing versatility. A fine match for Japanese food whether raw or cooked, spicier white meat or fish dishes, preferably with Thai spices.

Hartenberg Tenacity Riesling 2009 The spicy richness on the nose gives way to a taut yet floral and fruity midpalate that has both richness and complexity. The residual sugar is barely noticeable and if anything it contributes extra fullness and richness to the palate. This is a quality wine that offers great value and food-pairing versatility. Smoked trout terrine, Thai-inspired foods, bobotie and peri-peri chicken livers are examples of dishes that will perfectly complement Hartenberg Tenacity Riesling 2009..

T was all systems go on Saturday for the second edition of the Curro National U13 7s Series at Curro HCA. The tournament saw top rugbyplaying schools compete for the title of Cup winner. With Westville, Gelofte, Atholl Heights and Curro HCA taking part there was some outstanding talent on display. The day started with the pool rounds, with four pools of three teams, meaning that teams had to place in the top two of their respective pools to advance into the quarterfinals of the Cup. The teams in third would then enter the running for the Plate trophy. Competition was fierce from the first whistle, and with tries flying in from every corner and tackles on every inch of the pitch, the players made sure every spectator was entertained. After a ferocious first few games, the teams were seeded and the quarter-finals were decided. With titanic battles such as Westville taking on Atholl Heights and Northdene going head to head with Gelofte, the quarter-finals were more

Former Bok can't sidestep Howick MTB charm FEVER REPORTER FORMER Springbok and Sharks centre Jeremy Thomson is looking forward to re-

Former Springbok and Sharks rugby player Jeremy Thomson looks forward to returning to one of his favourite events on the calendar — the 2014 Sappi Howick MTB Classic on Sunday 1 June.

turning to one of the truest mountain biking challenges on the KwaZulu-Natal calendar when he tackles the 40-kilometre feature race of this year's Sappi Howick MTB Classic on Sunday 1 June. With 2013 race winner and former Kargo Pro MTB Team member Patrick Belton having opted to hang up his cycling cleats early in 2014, the men's title race is wide open in 2014 with numerous KZN Classic top 10 regulars putting up their hands to claim this year's spoils. It is unlikely that Thomson will feature among the leading front bunch come race day however, the former rugby star and evergreen MTB performer is excited to return to the popular event nonetheless and enjoy the sights and trails of the Howick region. "The Sappi Howick Classic is one of my favourite events on the calendar." exclaimed Thomson. "Having been schooled at Maritzburg College, the area is one I hold very close to my heart." The route for both the 40km classic event as well as the 20km Spar Intermediate Ride are known for the tough, yet rewarding, nature and this mountain biking challenge is another aspect Thomson struggles to ignore. "With me now being sponsored by Patrick Morewood's PYGA Bikes, we often cycle the fantastic trails through Howick and surrounds when we're testing bikes and they really are such a treat,” he said. Despite being unlikely to be at the front of the race Thomson's familiar figure will be far from out of place just a little way back as he, while always prioritising safety, looks to add yet another solid performance to his long list of impressive Howick results. "The Howick Classic is a race that I have always enjoyed and, for whatever reason, have always done quite nicely at and had some good finishes there in the past," he said. The popular Howick event offers participants the choice of the 40km Sappi Howick MTB Classic, 20-kilometre Spar Intermediate Ride or the 10-kilometre fun ride and takes place at Howick High School on Sunday 1 June. entertaining than the preceding games. With Westville, Gelofte, Hillcrest and the host side Curro HCA advancing to the semi-finals, it had all the ingredients for an enthralling end. However, before everyone witnessed the major games, the Plate semi-finals were on the menu. The semi-finals of the plate saw Forest View taking on Lyndhurst and Kloof taking on Curro Embury. The winners would compete in the finals and walk home with the Plate trophy. Games were evenly matched, but the outcome meant that the final would be between Kloof and Forest View. The Cup semi-finals saw Westville vs Gelofte and Hillcrest vs Curro HCA. But , there could only be two who would contest for the final and these two were Westville and Hillcrest. Both finals were fast and furious and saw sides throwing everything they had left into their performances. The Plate final saw Kloof come out winners of the Cup final. The pinnacle of the day's proceedings saw worthy winners Westville lift the trophy.

Good ‘cause’ for support

>> Upper Highway residents support worthy cause KALISHA NAICKER

T

HE UPPER Highway community showed their support for athletes Grant Cummings of Westville Athletic Club and Thabani Dlamini of Bidvest Running Club over the weekend by donating to the “Comrades for a Cause” campaign. The duo will be participating in Comrades Marathon on Sunday 1 June, running in aid of the Issy Geshen Lamont Home. For the past 54 years the home has provided nursing care to frail, indigent elderly residents, however, the home could have survived without donations from individuals and businesses, which is the reason behind the “Comrades for a Cause“ campaign. Dlamini, in his second Comrades and Cummings in his sixth Comrades thank all those who contributed to this worthy cause and encourage others to give what they can to ensure that the 68 residents receive the medical, emotional and physical support they need in their twilight years. For more information on the Issy Geshen Lamont Home or to donate please contact the administrator Sifiso Ngidi on 031 469 0247 or visit www.issygeshen.co.za
