SA’s POWER CRISIS critical >> Depleted reserves lead to shutdown of major stations THAMSANQA MAGUBANE and AMANDA KHOZA
T
HE country’s power crisis has reached critical levels. Eskom announced on Friday the power system in the country was “extremely constrained” and would remain so for the duration of the week. It blamed “unforeseen technical problems at power stations, depleted water reserves and logistical issues relating to diesel supplies at our peaking power stations”.
Eskomannouncedloadshedding was extended from stage two to stage three as a result of the “shutdown of two of our open cycle gas turbinepowerstationwhichusediesel to generate electricity”. “The diesel reserves have been depleted at the Gourikwa and Ankerlig gas turbines leading to the shutdown of the power stations. “The Drakensberg and Palmiet pumped storage schemes, which use water to generate electricity, havereducedoutputasaresultofdepleted water reserves.
“A further 1 000 mW of capacity is offline after three coal-powered unitstrippedlastnightduetotechnical faults.” Brian Bilton, a senior technical adviser for the Electrical ContractorsAssociation, saidlevelthreewas “the worst possible scenario”. “All they need to do now is switch off the entire South Africa,” said the adviser. Eskom warned that stage three load shedding would run from 6 am until 10 pm and again from 8 am until 10 pm, to build up reserves for the
week ahead. “Consumers can help alleviate pressure from the system by reducing their electricity usage as much as they can. “Eskom has also asked major customers to contribute by reducing their usage by 10 percent. “Our objective for load shedding this week is to fill the pumped storage dams, fill diesel tanks and undertake essential maintenance. Our aspiration after that is to avoid load shedding if at all possible until mid-January,” chief executive
Tshediso Matona said. “Unfortunately we cannot guarantee this but we will put in every effort over the festive season to avoid interruptions,” he added.

Does my cat have Aids? FELINE Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) is the causative agent for feline Aids. Your cat may acquire this disease from fighting with an infected cat or as a kitten born to the mother cat that is infected. This virus is very slow-acting and may take years before any signs are seen. One of the presenting symptoms is often smelly breath or your
cat not wanting to eat. This may be because the mouth or gums are inflamed (stomatitis and gingivitis). If your cat is diagnosed with this condition it is not a death sentence and no, you cannot contract Aids from your cat. Withtheproperdietandsymptomatic treatment for secondary infections should they arise, your cat can

Both diseases cause similar symptoms suchasstomatitis/gingivitis(inflammation of the gums) and are transmitted in a very similar way, but they are not the same. FeLV, like FIV also reduces the cat’s immunity making them susceptible to other infections. However, they may also cause tumours/cancer in infected cats. These cats, if not treated early, may

Child Welfare South Africa (KZN) addresses death of three-year-old Jamie Naidoo THE horrific death of three-year-old Jamie Naidoo has cast the spotlight on the shocking incidences of child abuse that we, in Child Welfare movement, face on a daily basis. There has been wide scale condemnation and with it the apportioning of blame. If there is blame to be apportioned, then we as a community in general should take collective responsibility. This death shows the wanton deprivation thatisprevalentwithinthesocietyandneedfor collective effort. This case has also highlighted the plight that the Child and Family Welfare Societies face with regards to insufficient funding to fulfill its mandate. The funding that societies receive by way of Subsidy from the KwaZulu-Natal Department ofSocialDevelopmentrangesbetween47to52 percent of the organisation’s operating costs. The deficit has to be met through fundraising initiatives. This issue has been raised on numerous platforms both provincially and nationally with little or no success. The Child Welfare Societies are volunteer driven and it is through the selfless service of thesechildwelfareactiviststhatthesesocieties are able to operate under trying circumstances. The death of young Jamie Naidoo and other childrenaroundthecountryshouldbetheclarion call for us to act by volunteering our services to Child and Family Welfare organisations in our areas. As we observed 16 days of no violence against women and children, we remembered those that have tragically lost their lives due to abuse. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family of Jamie Naidoo and the community. Child Welfare South Africa - KZN
Keep ‘Screamer’ on longer FOR years our national soccer team has been the subject of ridicule simply because it failed to make us proud. At times Bafana Bafana would fail to qualify for international showpieces and at other times they would be knocked out in the early stages of any such prestigious tournament, making the rest of us feel a little less patriotic about our boys. But it seems as if we have finally turned the corner after successfully qualifying for next year’s Afcon. SoIwouldliketocongratulateMashabaand the boys for the great form that they have displayed ever since Screamer was introduced to the side. Qualifying is the first step and the boys still have a long road ahead when the tournament kicks off next year January. Theroadtothefinalswillnotbesmoothsailing for them but I am certain that all of us will be behind them all the way. My request from my fellow countrymen is, regardless of the boys’ performance next year, earlyknockout, orallowingthetitletoslipfrom our fingers, could we, this time around, please allow Screamer Shabalala to stay on longer as the national coach? Can we please build a lasting relationship with our coach and not rush to call for his replacement if Bafana Bafana’s performance next year is not to our satisfaction? JJ Thompson

PEN Strings is the brain child of Kloof couple Rod and Karen Nichols which is a music venue that runs from a B&B on Fields Hill called Villa Brae. The venue has been created to provide a very unique setting whereby music and other events of all types can be held. As the B&B (Villa Brae) only has four double suites available, the couple found it necessary to create alternate revenue streams in order to make the Villa Brae business more sustainable. The venue has several very unique areas that are available for functions. These areas include a top deck suitable for functions of up to 40 people, the lower deck and amphitheatre that can accommodate up to 150 people and the pool area is ideal for summer functions, market set-ups and small festival type functions that could handle even more people. Villa Brae has a liquor licence and a full cash bar is available for functions. They are also registered with SAMRO and SAMPRA for music licencing. They also provide dinners and food as an option for people attending the events. Food is either cooked on-site or outside caterers are utilised depending on the requirement. To date Open Strings has held many music soirees with great SA artists such as Jesse Clegg, PJ Powers, Chris Chameleon, Ard Matthews, Arno Carstens, Albert Frost, Wendy Oldfield, Robin Auld, Nibs van der Spuy, Guy Buttery, Farryl Purkiss, to name a few.
Open Strings has been creating momentum in the music circles, and they are now often approached by the artists and their management directly to book the venue. Open Strings hosts “Big Name SA Artists” (Jesse Clegg etc.). These events are heldatleastonceamonthbutcanbemore frequent and are subject to artist availability within the KZN region. HE Kloof conservancy are always thinking innovatively and looking for new opportunities to make nature accessible to all. Their ‘back-to-nature’ events, guided walks for pupils in Krantzkloof Nature Reserve, the Molweni River Health Schools Project and the outreach projects are all examples of ways the conservancy has tried to get the environmental message to a broader audience and work with its motto of, “protecting nature, inspiring change”. In their latest innovation, the Kloof Conservancy launched a BioGuide. This project aims to enhance the visitor experience of Krantzkloof Nature Reserve by providing reserve specific information through the use of QR Code technology. According to Paolo Candotti, chairman of the conservancy, the QR Codes are essentially digital images which are captured by the camera on a digital mobile device and then software on the device accesses a website with information about a feature, mammal, tree, bird etc. “QR Code Labels were introduced in the Durban Botanical Gardens earlier this year as a project to label trees but we understand that this project is a first for an Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife reserve and possibly a first for any nature reserve in South Africa,” he said. “The project takes the concept developed at the Durban Botanical Gardens to a new level with the following exclusive features: access to our own dedicated Kloof Conservancy BioGu-

AKINGyourveryownChristmas decorations can be simple and cost effective. Here is how to make a candy-cane. These canes are virtually indestructible (and they make excellent gifts). What you will need: * two skeins of DMC Pearl Cotton, one red and one white * Scissors * Red pipe cleaners * 1/2" to 5/8" ribbon How to make it - Open a skein of cotton and snip the loop at each end so you have two bunches; repeat with the other skein. Take one red bunch and one white bunch and tie them together into a single knot around the end of a pipe cleaner. To make the stripes, twist the two colors around the pipe cleaner and

IPS to eating healthy when eating out * As a beverage choice, ask for water or order fat-free or low-fat milk, unsweetened tea, or other drinks without added sugars. * Ask for wholewheat bread for sandwiches. * In a restaurant, start your meal with a salad packed with veggies, to help control hunger and feel satisfied sooner. * Ask for salad dressing to be served on the side. Then use only as much as you want. * Choose main dishes that include vegetables, such as stir fries, kebobs, or pasta with a tomato sauce. * Order steamed, grilled, or broiled dishes instead of those that are fried or sautéed. * Choose a small” or “medium” portion. This includes main dishes, side dishes, and beverages. * Order an item from themenuinsteadheadingforthe“all-you-caneat” buffet. If main portions at a restaurant are larger than you want, try one of these strategies to keep from overeating: * Order an appetizer-sized portion or a side dish instead of an entrée. * Share a main dish with a friend. *If you can chill the extra food right away, take leftovers home in a “doggy bag.” * When your food is delivered, set aside or pack half of it to go immediately. * Resign from the “clean your plate club” when you’ve eaten enough, leave the rest. To keep your meal moderate in calories, fat, and sugars: * Ask for salad dressing to be served “on the side” so you can addonlyasmuchasyou want. * Order foods that do not have creamy sauces or gravies Add little or no butter to your food. * Choose fruits for dessert most often. * On long commutes or shopping trips, pack some fresh fruit, cut-up vegetables, low-fat string cheese sticks, or a handful of unsalted nuts to help you avoid stopping for sweet or fatty snacks. - Supplied

rived at the Robin Hood Foundation’s storage facility to load almost four tons of donated dog food into their vehicles before making their way to Inanda under the supervision of Jenny Konigkramer, founder of the Inanda Dog Project. “Konigkramer’s work with animals in this community has been remarkable,’’ said Kim Griffith Jones,
coordinator of the Robin Hood Foundation. “For the past three years Jenny and her assistant, Ann Hlope, have been feeding, deworming, sterilizing and, when necessary, taking animals for treatment, and there is noticeable difference in the health and the behaviour of the dogs.’’ Accord-

The Royal Canin team were hands on throughout the morning loving the animals, chatting to the owners and ensuring that the right foodfortheageandsizeofthedogwas distributed. “The food is scientifically formulated for the age, size and breed of the dog, and it is important that. Cindy Norcott, owner of Pro-Appointments, founder and chairlady of the Robin Hood Foundation and author of the book entitled ‘How to Be Unstoppable’ was the guest speaker for the event and the topic was ‘How to Make 2015, Your Best Year Ever’. Her plan of action to achieve this included – to be the happiest person she knows because, in her opinion, happy people are opportunity thinkers. Next on the schedule of fundraising initiatives for the tour and for their benefiting charity, The Reach For A Dream Foundation, includes a Sports Dinner on the 12 February at the International Hotel School in Westville.

Ride for RedCap, a resounding success FEVER REPORTER
>> Two-day challenge a success
A
FTER facing wet, windy and challenging conditions at the start of the fifth annualRideforRedCaplastweekend the 32 cyclists who rode the 620km from Johannesburg to Durban over two days enjoyed stunning weather for the second day of their endurance ride on Monday which saw the cyclists raise over R160 000 for the MRP Foundation. Formerly known as the RedCap Foundation, the MRP Foundation is an organisation which aims to empower South Africa’s youth through its nationwide programmes in low-income communities focusing on health, education and employment. Kelvin du Sart, Mr Price Sport Cycle Club chairman, was extremely proud of the cyclists com-
pleting the ride without incident and praised the way in which riders braved the conditions on the first day. "The first day held tough conditions as it rained non-stop, but the guys still managed to finish an hour under time," Du Sart said. "We took it easy today as everyone was tired from day one but we finished as a team.” Craig Jones, five-time Ride for RedCap cyclist, highlighted the camaraderie between the cyclists saying, “a bunch of guys came together in the beginning, not knowing each other too well, and 620km later, are friends for life. “This event is amazing for the MRP Foundation and we are really proud to be involved with such a worthwhile cause." For more info about the MRP Foundation visit www.mrpfoun dation.org
