Pipeline had defects >> Diesel line revealed to have had ‘inherent defects’ JEFF WICKS
T
HE ruptured diesel pipeline thatgushed200 000litresoffuel into a posh Hillcrest Estate was plagued by inherent defects. The antiquated Durban-Johannesburg Pipeline (DJP) was set to be decommissioned this year. The clean-up operation in the wake of the environmental disaster is expected to stretch over months and comes with a multi-million rand bill. TheWitnesscanrevealthatTransnet first discovered “inherent defects” in the steel used to construct the pipeline in 2003. Despite the accident and the potentialformore,Transnethasextended the operating life of the outmoded
fuel line, which runs beneath homes and farms in Pietermaritzburg and the Midlands, well into 2016. The extension, vital to provide a steady flow of fuel inland to the country’s economic hub, is due to the delayed completion of the New Multi Product Pipeline (NMPP), which comes with a price tag of R23,4 billion. According to an internal Transnet Pipelines Project report dated February 8, 2012, chief executive Charl Moller expands on the need for the new pipeline, citing that supply inland cannot be interrupted. “A need is the replacement of the oldest TPL petroleum pipeline, the Durban-Johannesburg Pipeline (DJP), commissioned in 1965, be-
cause of [an] inherent defect in pre1970 steels which was first mooted in 2003.” In moving to allay fears of further environmental disasters, and hiccups in supplying precious fuel inland, Transnet spokesperson Saret Knoetze said the inherent defects in the line did not make it dangerous. “… Nor does it make the pipeline inoperable. There are clearly defined tolerable operating design parameters. In addition we conduct various pipeline surveys and perform restoration if required,” she said. It remains unclear why the pipeline, which Knoetze insists was operated within parameters of its design, sheared along a weld-seam. CONTINUED ON PAGE 3.

Pipeline had defects “The investigation has not been concluded as the pipe has been sent for testing. The results of the testing will then be analysed and factored intothepipelinemaintenanceplanifrequired. The pipeline was operating at 8 800 kPA at the time of the incident, well below its design pressure. Sections of the DJP will be decommissioned post March 2016. “Transnet Pipelines mitigates risks of incidents by ensuring that the pipeline is operated and maintained in accordance with international standards. The rehabilitation of the area is continuing. We are currently removing the contaminated soil and continuously conducting air quality monitoring to ensure that it is within acceptable occupational limits,” she added.
Transnet ‘negligent’
Ward councillor Rick Crouch bemoaned Transnet’s handling of the spill. “Transnet is not only liable in this matter but negligent. How was it that if a report questioned the quality of the steel in the pipes used that a full inspection was not made, especially since this pipeline is way past its sell-by date?” he asked. “It is especially concerning since I questioned the safety of the pipeline more than a year ago and was assured that it was absolutely safe and regular inspections are conducted,” Crouch added. Affected homeowners had been neglected by Transnet in their haste to repair the pipeline. “They have received no updates. All they have been given is coffee and an ioniser to mask the odour, an offer to pay for a week at a B&B and, oh yes, go see the doctor and we will pay for the visit.” Disaster ‘was avoidable’ Head of environmental advocacy group Groundwork Bobby Peek said that this disaster could have been averted with better management. “If they [Transnet] had conducted surveys and their monitoring and maintenance plan was credible, this would not have happened. “The way we are going to get around pipeline and fuel leakages is by not extending the N3 freeway for more road traffic but rather by spending more money on developing a railway system that requires less fossil fuels. “Considering the racist approach the democratic government has taken by re-routing the new pipeline through a black area, namely Umbumbulu, shows the severely low level of government and corporate responsibility that ultimately goes against the Constitution,” Peek added.

A case for atheism Sibusiso Biyela
@astrosibs
I
AM an atheist. I have come to realise that I was born one just as everyone else is. This includes you, your family and all your friends. Others may refer to me as an infidel, others a lost soul, some might even think me the anti-Christ. These labels and others are quite effective at turning many a heretic into a believer. An atheist, by definition, is an individual who does not believe in God.
Going further, not believing in God does not necessarily mean you automatically are certain that he (or she or they) does not exist. Atheists do not generally claim to know for sure what they do not, but we can, with certainty, spot bovine feces. Ifreliableevidencewouldbefound and a falsifiable theory proving the existence of God, then the atheist would start “believing” in God without the burden of faith, but by the fulfilling use of reason in light of reliable evidence. Atheists do not try to disprove the existence of God as his existence has never been proven in the first place. The atheist would rather point out the holes in your religion, which theyareinabundancebothintheholy books and the actions of devout fundamentalists and extremists. Knowing full well what would happen, hestillkillsalmostallofustostart anew. This atheist in each of us challengesourfaith.Sowegatherwithothers like us to convince ourselves of the inconceivable, and re-enforce our unsupported beliefs. This column was inspired, in part by a quote from a prominent atheist and well-known actor, Emma Thompson, where she says: “I’m an atheist; I suppose you can call me a sort of libertarian anarchist. I regard religion with fear and suspicion. It's not enough to say that I don't believe in God. I actually regard the system as distressing: I am offended by some of the things said in the Bible and the Qur'an and I refute them.” Sibusiso is a thinker just like everybody else. With the exception, of course, that his thoughts are written as witty, debate-invoking and thought-provoking columns. This is partly because he loves to doitandmostlybecauseoftheguillotine of a deadline that haunts him always - the instrument of execution literally stands over his desk ready to drop.

It enables me to express myself when words fail,” said Nicole. “IlovetosingandIlivebythemotto, ‘I don’t sing because I am happy, I am happy because I sing’.” With titles of Best Performer and Best Duet at the Reach for the Stars competition and overall winner of theAreyoutheNextRisingStarcompetition, Nicole is on her way to ex-

She said that her goals for her future are to complete school and travel overseas to continue her singing career. “I do know how cut throat the music industry can be, one day you are ontopandthenextdayyoucouldfall, however I am ready to tackle any challenge,” said the confident gogetter. She is also planning on getting a degree in the medical field. Between school, singing classes, competitions and training, Nicole also finds time to give back to her community by aiding aspiring singers to “find their voice”. “I have a music studio at home where I help those who want to learn music or singing, and I also assist at my school choir and help pupils with their vocal training.” “Being able to help others brings me great joy, and I want others to feel the pleasure from singing and music like I do.” Nicole’s message to the youthis: “If you can believe you can achieve.” She said that if she can follow her dreams and make them a reality anyone can.

Kalisha.Naicker@media24.com RESIDENTS of the Upper Highway area welcomed the third and final picnic bench which was installed at the Molweni Park last week. According to Kloof Conservancy chairperson Paolo Candotti, in November 2013 Kloof Conservancy initiated a project to construct a community park in Lower Molweni. “This project is a follow-up on the Kloof Conservancy Molweni River Health Schools Project which identified incorrect use of the river as a potential problem to the water quality of the Molweni River,” he said. “Weplannedtobuildacommunitypark in Lower Molweni from where the Molweni River exits Krantzkloof Nature Reserve to where it joins the Umgeni River, a distance of approximately 2,5km.” He said that discussions have taken place with the community representatives
and the agreement was to create a park approximately 50m either side of the Molweni River with a path running on both sides of the river. “The riverine area was cleared of invasive alien plants and the indigenous riverine vegetation re-established. The park consists mainly of indigenous riverine vegetation with small sections of formal park for recreation purposes,” said Candotti. “The primary objective from a conservancy perspective is the protection of the river and the biodiversity of the area, but it is also an ideal opportunity to combine environmental objectives with the provision of benefits for the community.” He said that the park is now an attractiverecreationalfacilityaswellasaneducational facility for the local schools that can usetheparkasasafeenvironmentforeducation on eco-systems and welcomed the community to visit. ADVERTORIAL
A major episode of low back pain occurs in 60% to 90% of the population. The highest prevalence is in those between 45 and 64 years of age. Low back pain accounts for 45% of all sick leave and only visits for the common cold have outnumbered presentation of low back pain to doctors. The medical costs and vocational disabilities are substantial and low back pain is considered the most expensive benign condition in industrialised countries. The good news is that the majority of low back pain can be treated conservatively (ie. without surgery). Risk factors for low back pain include: • Sedentary lifestyle • Pregnancy • Prolonged sitting • Chronic cough • Heavy manual labour • Repetitive lifting and twisting • Frequent driving • Smoking • Exposure to vibration, jack hammers and machine tools

Smoking not only increases the risk of back pain and disc herniations, but treatment (surgical or conservative) is less effective in people who smoke. Increasing body mass index is associated with a higher risk of low back pain. Trunk stiffness and poor back and abdominal strength and fitness are also associated with a higher risk of low back pain. In fact, fitness is suggested as a preventative strategy for low back pain. Other factors that could contribute to low back pain are leg length discrepancy, scoliosis and lordosis. Mechanical low back pain: The most common type of back pain. It usually occurs in young, active, healthy people. It is thought to be due to spasm of the back muscles, injury to the ligaments and /or irritation of the facet joints of the spine. Spinal stenosis: Usually occurs in older people and is characterised by pain that radiates down one/both legs during activity. It is caused by compression of the nerve roots due to a decrease in diameter of the spinal canal. Nerve root pain: (radicular pain) occurs when a nerve root is irritated. It is characterised by sharp, severe pain that radiates down a leg. This may be accompanied by changes in sensation and muscle power in this area. This condition is often referred to as sciatica as the sciatic nerve that runs down the back of the leg is most commonly affected. Radicular pain is usually caused by a disc herniation in the low back. Disc herniation: May result from a sudden injury, or it may be a slow, progressive condition. Repetitive bending and twisting can increase the risk of disc herniation. The most clinically relevant herniations occur in those between 30 - 50 years of age, but there are also cases in adolescents and older people. Conservative care is beneficial in the majority of people with disc herniation and sciatica. Physiotherapy can be useful for all the conditions described above and has a very important role in the conservative treatment of low back pain. Physiotherapists are first line practitioners. This means that a member of the public may approach a physiotherapist directly without a referral from a doctor. Physiotherapists are trained to fully assess your back. If they are concerned about a more serious problem, they will send you for the relevant investigations or to the appropriate specialist. When appropriate, they will treat you using a combination of spinal mobilisation, massage, myofascial release, trigger point therapy and various electrotherapy services. They will advise you about your condition and suggest modifications to your normal activities. They will also give you stretches to loosen tight muscles and teach you to activate your stabilising muscles (which protect the spine). This is so important to prevent recurrences and for rehabilitation to your optimal function.

White cars are booming worldwide
>> The colour of choice
T
HE next time you buy a car, you might want to pause a while longer to decide what colour you choose. Top car companies throw millions at researching what the latest tastes are, and say the colour of a vehicle is so important to customers that it can be the difference between buying or not. TheDetroitsawmanyoftheclassic colours—redsforPorschesandother sports cars — and a few less conventional (a Nissan Titan pick-up truck decked out in “forged copper”). But there was no mistaking the pre-eminence of white. Particularly at the Volkswagen stand, where several cars, the stairs and much of the furniture was white.
In a multibillion-dollar industry, nothing is put to chance and nothing is done by mistake, of course. AtleasttwodesignersinDetroitreferred to the “Apple effect” — the Californian tech giant — to explain the propensity for white vehicles. Sitting at a white table, on white chairs, inawhiteroom,OonaScheepers of Volkswagen told AFP: “White for cars really peaked in the 1970s and 1980s, and then all of a sudden disappeared. “But in the past 10 years we have noticed an increase again in white. And it definitely came with the Apple iPod era because Apple started to do everything with white, and a lot of chrome or metal finishes. “In combination it was nice and
fresh. But before that, white was really not selling in Europe because people associated it with delivery cars and it looked cheap. “But the combination with metal and chrome looks fresh and completely new. White is booming worldwide.” So if one were to choose a black vehicle over a white one, what kind of person would that make you? “You could be sporty. But people in hot countries like white. “White definitely deflects heat, but if you have a black car it can get damn hot inside. And then in a country like South Africa you often have to overtake into direct, oncoming traffic, but white is very visible.
Jag SUV won’t be called ‘She-Type’ IT is good news for dads who feared their days of roaring along in a sports car were behind them. Jaguar is building its first 4x4 – and there’s plenty of room for the kids. The British firm announced 1 300 new jobs to help it create the five-door, five-seater sports utility vehicle, which will cost around R660 000 in South Africa. Firmly aimed at “Jag dads” with children to ferry around, the all-wheel drive car will come with extra grip technologytomakeitsafeandreliable in all weathers. More practical than the sleek saloons and supercharged sports cars that Jaguar is known for, it is also designedtoappealtobusymums on the school run – for whom it has been dubbed the “SheType” Jaguar. To keep the youngsters entertained during longer journeys, the car will also feature on-board wi-fi and a Meridian

digital audio system. It will officially be called the F-Pace when it goes on sale as a British rival to the Porsche Macan and BMW X4 crossover. Jaguar’s bosses made the announcement in Detroit recently ahead of the North American International Auto Show, which started last week. Design director Ian Callum said: “The F-Pace is our family sports car. It will encapsulate everything that Jaguar stands for—beautifuldesign, precise handling, a supple ride, luxu-
rious interior finishes and cutting-edge technology.” It will be powered by a new generation of fuel-efficient two-litre petrol and diesel engines, to be built at the company’s new factory in Wolverhampton. But drivers who want even more power can opt instead for the 3-litre V6 engine used in the Jaguar FType. Global sales director Andy Goss said Jaguar’s aim with the F-Pace was to create the “ultimate practical sports car.” - Supplied
Honda NSX to return to SA TWENTY-FIVE years after the debut of the original NSX supercar Honda has revealed its successor at the 2015 North American International Auto Show. Theproductionmodel,thesecond-generation of the iconic supercar, has a turbocharged hybrid engine, radical styling, lightweight construction and will be launched later this year. What’s more, it’s headed for South Africa in 2016, although details will be revealed closer to the local launch. Mike Accavitti, senior vicepresident and general manager of Honda’s Acura division, said: “Our
commitment was to create an allnew NSX true to the heritage of NSX — a supercar that delivers a new driving experience, one in which every part of the vehicle respectsthesmartestpartofthecar, the driver.” Johnathan Norman, NSX interior design project leader, said: “Consistent with the ‘human-centered supercar’ development concept, the NSX was designed from the inside out with an uncompromising focus on the driver. The NSX features an “advanced sports package” with key power-train components - the mid-mounted engine, two front
motors and Sport Hybrid battery packandpowercontrolunit-positioned to concentrate vehicle mass low and toward the centre of the car. The NSX’s dial-operated IDS offers several modes — quiet, sport, sport+ and track. The system adjusts engine, transmission and chassis response, as well as the engine sound level. Quiet mode offers battery-only driving at low speed for short distances. Vehicle response becomes increasingly sharp when Sport, Sport+ mode or Track mode is selected. It also has a launch function. — Wheels24.

“So it’s a safety feature as well in somecountries.Metallicgreyorblack just melts into the colour of the tar, so it is not that visible.” Susan Lampinen, chief designer, colours and materials, at Ford, said the colour was so crucial to some people that they would buy a car purely because of that — never mind the design of the vehicle. She too identified an Apple ripple effect in propelling white to a bestseller worldwide for Ford.
2015 VW Golf GTE looking good in white.
“White is very clean, very technical, very modern. So most cars look good in white,” she said, adding other popular colours included blacks and silvers, while blue is also on the up. Lampinen identified only “slight differences” in preferences in different countries because, she said, of globalisation. Environment, culture and climate can all effect what colour car someone might buy, she added.

"It is something I really look forward to, the whole summer in KwaZulu-Natal training in the heat, trips into the valley learning the rivers and the paths on the portages. I just love it," he said. Kime had to settle for a lazy outing at the Hansa Fish because of doctor’s orders while he had glandular fever, when the other three that make up the Dusi "Fantastic Four" were racing each other. Having been given the medical allclear, the Pietermaritzburger is loving being back into a full training regime. "It is such a relief to be back training twice a day," he said.
