After being married to his wife Hilda who is also 90 years old for 66 years, Ted says there is no secret. “It’s simply about being considerate ,” Ted said. “We always had strong communication and worked together as a team.” Co-ordinating their efforts was necessary in order for them to overcome the Second World War, which Ted was called

DURBAN woman appeared in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court, and pleaded guilty to all cases of animal cruelty on Thursday. Naidoo was given a sentence of a R6000 fine or six months imprisonment, half of which is suspended for five years. She will have a criminal record and has to pay the Kloof and Highway Spca costs of R3300 on or before 30 April 2015. AccordingtoLisaGaddoftheKloof SPCA on 15 April 2014, Inspector Mvulane and trainee inspector Sithole attended a complaint in the Queensburgh area and found a dog in grave distress. "A large breed Boerbul type dog was lying underneath a wooden jungle gym structure, the animal was whimpering loudly and was trying desperately to lift its head, and another small breed dog on a short chain could be seen as well," she said. Jackson advised residents to install externalbeamsand“gatecrashing”kitstodriveway gates linked to the home alarm to reduce the risk of being surprised by intruders. “An early warning system is the best line of defence against crime, along with the security conscious mindset of always being aware of your surroundings and any potential threats to your home and family,” he added. They’re still in love

One day while visiting Hilda, Ted took her for a walk in the park and got down on one knee and popped the question. They married a year later on 17 July 1949. Soon after graduating Ted accepted a job for the government to work asaseniorgeologistinKenya.Herehe served for five years of which six months every year he had to live in a tent in a “dark forest”. Hildasaysshewasnever moreterrified to let Ted go, however she was pregnant and wrote monthly to the

British government to let her join her husband. Eventually the couple was reunited and it was a strong commitment to each other, their love, dedication and understanding which kept them going. Soon after, their second daughter was born and the couple never felt closer. Ted, who is a qualified Doctor of Science, says that no matter what career path he followed, Hilda was right by his side and always urged him on. “Marriage is based on a love like

ours. It is having someone supportive and always willing to work together towards a common goal,” he said. Today the couple share a cottage at The Camphor’s in Hillcrest. They still enjoy each other’s company as if it were the first day they met. They spend time reading, playing board games, listening to classical music and watching television. “I think truly we are really great friends that are very fortunate to still have each other,” Hilda said. ORMER Supreme Court of Appeals Judge Peter Combrinck will give a talk entitled ‘Dolus Eventualis’ on Wednesday 11 February at the Kloof Junior Primary School Hall in Abelia Road at 6pm and the community is urged to attend. Judge Combrinck has his educational background at Pretoria Boys High, the University of Pretoria

and the University of Natal. He has gathered vast legal experience from the days of being an attorney, to advocate, senior counsel, supreme court judge, the Labour Appeal Court and on tothehighestcourtinSouthAfrica–the Supreme Court of Appeal. He currently is chairman of the Bids Appeal Board. Speaking about his talk Bev Elsip of

said she admires her parents for the sacrifices they both made to give her sister and herself such a wonderful life. “In the 66 years that my parents are married I never heard them ever fight,” she said. “They complement each other’s personalities and I think this love is truly one that will last forever.” If you are a part of or know of a couple who has been together for many years and would like to share your story, contact Kalisha Naicker on kalisha.naicker@media24.com.

the Kloof Library said that in December, Judge Masipa granted the Prosecutors leave to appeal against the controversial acquittal on murder charges of Oscar Pistorius in the matter of the shooting of Reeva Steenkamp. "This appeal will challenge Judge Masipa’s interpretation of the law in the matter of Dolus Eventualis. The Supreme Court of Appeals has the power to overturn her verdict, which would have a considerable impact on the length of incarceration of Oscar Pretorius. We are most fortunate to have a judge of the standing of Judge Peter Combrinck to enlightened and inform the community of the finer details of what Dolus Eventualis actually means," she said. Tickets are available from the Kloof Library at R35 for members of Friends, and R50 for the public. For more information contact, 031 764 7543.

Anaesthesia and your pet ANAESTHESIA always carries risks, even in healthy animals going in for minor procedures. The risk associated may be increased depending on certain factors such as age, breed, previous and/or current illness or if your animal has experienced trauma. Young patients

for example may suffer from low body temperatures, low glucose levels, and can dehydrate very quickly. Younger patients also may not have developed the enzyme systems to break down certain medications and/or anaesthetic drugs as yet . Older patients generally carry lower muscle mass and may be suffering from organ dysfunctions such as kidney, liver or heart disease. If they are not symptomatic at the time of the anaesthetic, you may unknowingly be placing their body under an enor-

mous amount of stress and can cause these systems to fail. Because of these risks associated, it is very important for your vet to conduct a full clinical exam on your pet before an anaesthetic is considered. You may be advised to have certain blood or urine tests done to help uncover hidden illnesses. A simple urine sample can tell your vet a lot about how well the kidney is functioning and ensure no possible infections. Even if no abnormalities are found at the time, the results from

these screening tests become part of your pets medical record, and provide a baseline for future tests to be referenced to. Your vet may also advise that your pet is placed on a drip for the procedure to help eliminate the medicationsgivenatthetimeaswellasmaintain blood pressure. All these measures are done in your pets’ best interest in order to keep them as safe as possible while under their care and reduce the many risks associated with an anaesthetic.

‘The Crowned Eagle’ lands >> Brothers transform neglected land into ‘indigenous wonderland’ KALISHA NAICKER

Kalisha.Naicker@media24.com

HAT was once a unkept part of Stockville has now been transformed into an environmental haven by Upper Highway brothers Clive and Mervyn George. Aptly named The Crowned Eagle Conservancy, Clive and Mervyn George has transformed a once neglected and alien invader infested piece of Gillitts D’Mos area into an indigenous wonderland, consisting of meandering pathways crossing bridges and streams in a natural riverine forest, decks overlooking the cave and waterfall. The conservancy has become a release area for birds and animals from the Centre for the Rehabilitation of Wild Life (CROW). The education centre is of great interest to adults and children who are

able to examine various artefacts, an 1880s coffee grinder and learn about the history of the area, where coffee was once grown and coffee trees are still in existence. A small indigenous nursery is being established and plants are offered to members and visitors at no cost. In 2013 the George brothers were awarded an eThekwini Municipality Green Award Certificate by Gill Noyce for their dedication to ongoing conservation. Clive says that this land could be of historical significance due to the number of historical ruins found within the conservancy. “The dam was built in 1876 and used by Natal Government Railways in the 1880s to supplement the steam train water supply to the Gillitts station,” he said. “A recently discovered stone reservoir could possibly have been used

in the early days by the Gillitts family for bathing purposes. “It has been reported that the milk cans were kept cold in the reservoir before being sent by steam traintotheModelDairyinDurban,” said Clive. He added that a stone weir has also been discovered and excavation of this site will be undertaken within the near future. “Also of historical significance is an old diesel engine manufactured byPeterYeovilEnglandandusedas a water pump. A cave / overhang contains San and Zulu artefacts, some dating back 1200 years have also been discovered.” He said that members of the public are welcome to visit the conservancy by appointment only. For more information on the conservancy or to book a tour contact Clive on 071 105 5447.

Upper Highway woman shines KALISHA NAICKER

UPPER Highway mom, Sue Barnes, owner of Subzpads, a company that manufactures panty packs and pads for teenage school girls in disadvantaged areas won the Margaret Hirsch Business Woman of the Year (Hillcrest), monthly finalist award last week. Her business, which Margaret has helped promote throughout South Africa, has grown from strength to strength and has seen thousands of schoolgirlswhopreviouslywereunable to attend school when they had their periods, attending school on a full time basis. According to Barners, she created Subzinresponsetoarequestforthedonation of washable sanitary pads and panties for the underprivileged girls in her area. "My youngest daughter, who attends a remedial school due to her dyslexia, came home with appeals from her school for sanitary pads and panties," said Barnes. "I went to the school to find out what it was all about, and discovered just how many South

African girls skip school while menstruating. I immediately thought about my own daughter. If she missed a week per month of school there is no way she would catch up. It's tragic that anyone in their teen years should be faced with this dilemma." She said that she discovered that girls use unhygienic alternatives to sanitary pads, such as newspaper or even sand and leaves, or sitting on cow patties. Doing this puts them at a huge risk of infection. And, according to Barnes, of nine million girls aged between 13 and 19 years in South Africa, "80% of thoseweremissingaweekofschoolevery month... That's just time you can't make up and it's affecting their education." A pattern maker and designer with a large clothing chain, Barnes has a background in construction, fabrication and quality control. Using these skills, she decided to design something to address the problem, coming up with her sanitary pad packs. At her own cost, Barnes has been producing these packs and delivering them to schoolgirls in KwaZulu-Natal where she lives.

Seen at the Hirsch's awards are Pam Gaddiah, Vincent Naidoo, Glenda Thompson, Dr. Hennie Palm, Sue Barnes and a representative from Estee Lauder. "One pack should last a girl her entire high school career," says Barnes, who believes that finding a solution to this critical issue is her calling. "Subz are panties to which sanitary pads can be clipped," she said. "The panty is made of 100% cotton knit, (130 – 140g) which allows the skin to breath. This is also a eco-friendly/ green solution. The elastic has a standard non-woven rubber base, and won’t stretch out of shape. The pad has six layers, the outer being the 100% cottonknit, waterproofing, threelayers

of hydrophilic fabric and then the inner is a hydrophobic fabric." Also at the event was integrated health practitioner, Dr. Hennie Palm (www.giant-within.com) who was the key note speaker and gave a thought provoking talk on women's wellness, with emphasis on adrenal fatigue and how to maintain a healthy lifestyle to avoid it. ABSA's Vincent Naidoo spoke about his motivational book Seriously Kidding and representatives from Estee Lauder spoke on the latest beauty products on the market.

A proposal to cut to zero the current maximum alcohol level of 0.05g/100 ml of blood was published earlier in January in the Government Gazette. The legal alcohol level was dropped from 0.08g/100ml in 1996. Those who wish to comment on the new bill and drink-driving restrictions, have until February 27 to respond as the draft bill has yet to go through the parliamentary process. TheoriginalNationalRoadTrafficact reads: “No person shall on a public road(a) drive a vehicle; or (b) occupy the driver’s seat of a motor vehicle the engine of which is running, while the concentration ofalcoholinanyspecimenofbloodtaken from any part of his or her body is not less than0.05g/100ml,orinthecaseofaprofessional driver referred to in section 32, not less than 0.02g/100ml.” The amended bill reads: “No person

shall on a public road (a) drive a vehicle or (b) occupy the driver’s seat of a motor vehicle the engine of which is running, while there is concentration of alcohol in any specimen of blood taken from any part of his or her body.” According to the draft bill, then the section governing the blood-alcohol amount/limit has been omitted, meaning if you’re found driving with any concentration of alcohol in your blood, you can be charged. The bill was first proposed in 2011 by then minister of transport, S’bu Ndebele whohadbeeninmeetingswiththeAutomobile Association for two years before it was proposed to parliament. AA spokesperson Marius Luyt said alcohol played a major role in SA road deaths.Hesaidazeroalcohollevelwould not be too drastic as current levels are currently very low, reports Beeld. The chairman of Justice Project SA, Howard Dembovsky, said: “The advantage is it sends a clear message against drunk driving but the disadvantage is that people will be criminalised over any type of alcohol.”
