Kalisha.Naicker@media24.com KLOOF Conservancy and the eThekwini Municipality have combined forces to eradicate invasive alien plants(IAP)fromKloofStreetverges over the next 24 months. According to Paolo Candotti, conservancy chairman, invasive alien plants are a plant species that have been introduced, either intentionally or unintentionally, into the community. “They reproduce rapidly in their new environments and tend to outcompete indigenous plants due to a combination of factors, including a lack of natural enemies in the new environment, resistance to local diseases and other plant pathogens,” he said. “In addition they have highly competitive growth and colonising strategies that provide them with a competitive edge and the ability to outgrow indigenous plants.” He said the National Environmental Management Biodiversity Act (Nemba), which spells out requirements with regard to IAPs, came into effect on 1 October, 2014. “These regulations require the control and eradication of those species that have been identified as IAPs and which are listed in the Nemba regulations,” said Candotti.
“eThekwini Municipality’s parks, leisure and cemeteries department is in a sustainable partnership with Kloof Conservancy to meet its legal obligations and will be initiating a pilot project to remove IAPs on municipal street verges starting from March.” This will include the removal of many popular species, among others such as Sisal (Agave sisalana including the variegated species), Swordfern (Nephrolepis spp), Wedelia/Singapore Daisy (Thelechitonia trilobata) and Queensland Umbrella Trees (Schefflera actinophylla), which may have been intentionally planted by residents on verges. A contractor will be removing these species and alternative plants will possibly be offered by the municipality. The cost of eradication of the IAPs is being borne by Kloof Conservancy. The Kloof Conservancy and eThekwini Municipality is appealing to the residents’ sense of civic responsibility and seek their co-operation to remove these plants and thus help them make Kloof free of IAPs. STABLISHED by professional dancers Alain and Melloney Rijnvis, Dance 2 Dance International opened in 2011 in Caversham Road, Pinetown. It moved into Kloof Village Mall in 2014. After travelling for two years and being exposed to many studios around the world Alain and Mel noticed there was a great need for trendy, professional dance facilities in KwaZulu-Natal. This gave them the drive to see a similar studio be opened in their home town to help grow, strengthen and unite the dance industry. The duo offers ballroom (Dancesport), hip- hop, freestyle, ballet, salsa, line dancing and wedding(firstdance) lessons. They also offer private lessons and group classes to adults, children, singles, couples, male and female. The studio has grown quickly to having the best four qualified trainers now operating from D2Di’s facilities. LOOF’S Leith Shankland is making waves in the swimmingworldasherepresented South Africa in the Commonwealth Games 2014 Glasgow, World Cup circuit 2014 and qualified for Olympics 2012 in London. Chatting to the Fever about his rise to stardom, Shankland said it all began with a “scare”. “I got into swimming when I was about18monthsoldbecausewehad a scare in Cape Town where I fell in the pool. It was then that my parents decided it be best for me to get water safe. “I started training at a competitive level when I was seven just because I enjoyed sports and watching
swimming on television, and I have never looked back,” said the 23year-old. He said that he always had role models to help him. “Growing up my role model was JontyRhodesbecausehewasagreat all-round sportsman. I also looked up to my first primary school headmaster Mr Les Stanley,” said Shankland. “As I grew older, my role models moved to swimmers, particularly Terence Parkin, with whom I trained, and Michael Phelps. However, I have always seen my parents as my true role models because they have always been there for guidance and support, as well as providing my sister and I with the world no matter what the circumstance.”

Shankland said that his coach, Graham Hill has also been a great influence on his life. “Being one of the most well rounded coaches in the field tends to give one the upper hand on more than a few occasions and thankfully Ihavebeenwithhimfor15yearsand cannot imagine swimming under anyone else. He recently won World Coach of the Year, just a testament to his prestige and hard work,” he said. Describing himself as perceptive, Shankland said that the achievement he is most proud of is his Commonwealth Games silver medal. “For me it really gave me a sense of achievement and ambition and was one of the best races of my life. “Qualifying for Olympics was also one of my proudest moments. On an academic side achieving seven distinctions in matric and passing my Bachelor of Accounting Science degree (BCompt) are among that list as well. Also, meeting the Queen at the Commonwealth Games was pretty awesome.” Some of his other achievements are silver and bronze medallist Commonwealth Games 2014 Glasgow, medallist on several occasions on the World Cup circuit 2014, he finished in the top 12 in the world championships last year in 100m free and the 4x200m relay team finished fourth, missing out on gold by 0.3 seconds, (all four teams within 0.3 seconds of each other), qualified for Olympics 2012 in London (relay team finished fifth and 10th respectively), qualified for world champs 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014 and finished in the top 10 in the world champs in 2012 for 200m free. His message to the youth is: “Always enjoy what you are doing. Don't let other people influence you or pressurise you into something you don't love.”

Kalisha.Naicker@media24.com THE South African Riding for the Disable (SARDA) 2015 season is underway and this year seems better than ever with the term “new” being used to describe it. There is a new arena surface which has just been laid and there are new and very enthusiastic young ridersarehavingtheirfirstexperienceof 'therapy in motion'. In addition there are new volunteers are assisting in the arena, and there's a new kid on the stable block, Dukethepony, whohassettledinvery well, proving to be an excellent part of the therapy team and very popular with the children. According to Linda Wilson a volunteer, the organisation provides care for children and young adults whoarementallyandphysicallydisabled. The association gives disabled people the opportunity to experience therapeutic and recreational horse riding lessons which assist in improv-
ing mental, physical and social wellbeing. The branch exists as a result of teamwork with all instructors and helpers volunteering their time and skills. She said that SARDA aims to provide horse riding for therapeutic and recreational purposes at no charge to childrenwithspecialneeds, fromvarious schools in the greater Durban area. “We aim to maintain a high standard of therapeutic horse riding by providing qualification opportunities and training to instructors and volunteers,” she explained. “In riding a horse, freedom and independence become a reality.” However, the lessons are costly and donor funds have decreased. “We conduct fundraising initiatives to sustain our organisation,” said Wilson. She urged the community to support the Open Day, and assist SARDA with their service to the community. For more information, call 031 716 8233 or 083 372 1881.

How can we teach morals without religion?
Sibusiso Biyela
@astrosibs
I
HAVEoftenwonderedhowatheistsand secular people go through life without God. I have asked myself what hope you have for the future without a supernatural beinginyourcornerlookingoutforyou, and I have wondered even more what morals mean to someone who is Godless (God free?). The first decade of my life was quite turbulent with my family of at least four children at a time and my mother never staying in one place for more than a year or two. In this way, I don’t remember that we settled and subscribed to any church as a result. I became exposed to the life of church
muchlaterinthedecadeandonlythenwas I smart enough to ask myself some ques tions. If memory serves, I think I was nine and suffering the pain of my first (of many) wisdom tooth. I asked myself, who is God? From what I had seen at the time I con cluded that God was there to keep human beings in order and to try to keep them from killing each other. Satisfied with my answer, I reasoned that since I was a good person I did not need God and that I did not need religion. As time went by and I listened to priests from all denominations of church, I started torealisethatallthestufftheyweresaying from that “black book” made a lot of sense. In fact, I thought that all the good things the book said such as "do not steal", "do not kill another human being", etc, were so obvious that I thought it a bit re dundant to attend church. But, I continued to attend since, by vir tue of my mother, I did not have much choice in the matter. As time passed and I slept under the benches at "crossnight" (overnight church services) and I noticed that every time the preacher said these things, he promised the adults and the children that wewouldgotoheavenifwedidthesegood things as God demanded. This confused me quite a bit (existen tialism can get very interesting for an ado lescent). I mean, is it not obvious that we should
do unto others as we would like to be done unto us? Why the promise of bliss to add to it? And why perpetuate the promise of being branded a child of Satan if I am naughty? I have always kept a cynical view of reli gion for these reasons. Anyway, when I first learnt of atheism I had this idea that atheists were devil worshipping freaks, despite my own scep ticism about God and religion. How can you seriously be a good person without having God to guide you? Through pop culture that I had wit nessed from my morethanfair share of television, I saw good deeds from people who did not acknowledge God in any of their works and trying this out myself I realised how much more pure it was to do good without the promise of heaven or prosperity. Now, don’t get me wrong, I am not goodietwoshoes (this phrase always confused me), I have just been lucky enough to not get in a lot of trouble (relatively speaking), but I think I have a good grasp of what makes a good person good. So, how do you live without God? How do you dissuade your children from evil without sending them to Sunday school? I think you can be a good person by loving those close to you (and everyone else) and remembering to do to others what you wish to be done to you. I don't think you need the Bible for that.

ANC, your time is up I WAS mortified and greatly disillusioned having watched the fiasco that erupted during the State of the Nation (SONA) on 12 February. The disruption and disturbance from theEFFcomesasnosurprisetotheentire nation, but what was really disconcert ing and totally disgraceful was the tac tless and boorish manner in which the ruling party (ANC) handled the entire matter. From the jamming of the transmission signals, totheSAPSbeingcalledintopar liament chambers – this party blundered their way through the SONA being com pletely undiplomatic and injudicious and committing a gross violation of the con stitution. The very same constitution that many fought for, even to the point of death, to ensure that it becomes the foundation of our democracy. A democracy that seems to be brushed off and trampled upon by the ANC. SONA took us back to the days of the oppressive apartheid regime when the government of the day oppressed and controlled everything and tightly held thereinsoverwhatwasbroadcastedand what the people had access to. The brute force that was used in the removal of the EFF MPs was redolent of theapartheidsecurityforcesviolentlyre moving protestors in an effort to silence their cries for liberation. The evasiveness of the speaker of the house in answering simple questions viz, “Was the SAPS called into the cham bers?” was indicative of her bias and in competence in functioning as a neutral speaker of the house.
She, however, chose to act as the president’s personal bodyguard and spokesperson. It’stimetosanctionanew competent speaker of the house. For too long the ANC has been given carte blanche in ruling this country, but no more. It is time for truth and accountability. The ruling party has been enforcing laws on others yet think of themselves as above the law. ThereactionofPresidentJacobZuma to the debacle that unravelled in parlia ment was completely improper and un becoming for a leader of a nation. To merely laugh off a matter without so much as some words of explanation toplacatethesituationorevenanapolo gytothenationandtheentireworldthat was watching was unacceptable and very suggestive of the inept and unprofi cient leader that he is. It most certainly doesn’t augur well for him as the leader of this nation. I don’t foresee a favourable and pros perous future for our country if this is the calibre of leadership that the ANC is pro ducing to rule in our land. This ANCruled government needs to be more accountable and transparent to the citizens whom they serve and to stop hiding behind their bullying tactics. Butthenagainhonesty, accountability and truth are not qualities that they can identify with. SONA has made it lucid and crystal clear that the ANC doesn’t have what it takes to rule South Africa with wisdom, integrity, accountability and honesty. So, ANC your time is up! Annet Govender

SECURITY COMPANY 6 YEARS RUNNING
DEDICATED TO PROTECTING YOUR FAMILY by Senior Journalist Lyse Comins
Blue Security protects thousands of local families who benefit from the largest pool of reaction vehicles and special project zones, owned by a single security provider in the Highway area. Blue Security special projects manager Stephen Wimborne said the company now has a total of 19 reaction vehicles in the Highway area with direct access to the company’s control centre in Pinetown. “We have also been fortunate to partner with residents in setting up special projects in Kloof, Crestholme, Waterfall, Gillitts and Forest Hills to name a few. These partnerships have contributed positively to our fight against crime.” Wimborne said the main advantage of a special project was the provision of a layered security solution with benefits including: A dedicated vehicle patrolling a designated “Blue Zone” which does not leave the area and can achieve optimal reaction times. Pooled resources to bring down the cost of the dedicated vehicle. Dedicated armed reaction officers assigned to the vehicle to improve crime intelligence. CCTV Street Surveillance Cameras to act as a deterrent and crime intelligence tool. A direct line of communication to the vehicle and to the special projects manager.
Radio communication to the control centre for residential street patrollers. Donations of vehicle decals, radios and vests to street patrollers on a need, application and approval basis. Wimborne said the company continually focused on staff training and pre-employment screening to ensure a top calibre team.
IMPORTANT QUESTIONS TO ASK WHEN CHOOSING A SECURITY COMPANY.
“We are dedicated to optimally protecting the lives and property of our clients and their neighbours. We don't only react swiftly to crime scenes, we are proactive, providing visible policing so that families can feel safe again.”
Is the company’s control centre locally based? How many of its reaction vehicles patrol, not nationally, but in your suburb? What special project services does the company offer?
“We have professional control centre staff, dedicated reaction officers and sufficient vehicles on the ground so that what we promise matches what we deliver in an emergency,” he said. Wimborne said local clients, who appreciated the company’s quality approach to security services, had overwhelmingly voted for it in the 2014 PMR Awards to ensure that it won top place, for the sixth year in a row, achieving a Diamond Arrow award and the title of “undisputed leader” in the KwaZulu-Natal security sector.
What is the company’s policy in dealing with customer complaints?

The centre’s Jess Southey says: “HACT serves several poverty-torn communities in the Valley of 1000 Hills region - one of the epicentres of the world’s HIV pandemic with estimated HIV-infection rates of up to 40% to 60% of the population in some communities.” Over the years, HACT has expanded its suite of projects and programmes year on year, always in response to the needs of communities it serves. “Where a need has been witnessed, a plan has been put into place to respond to that need in a way that uplifts and empowers, rather than demoralises,” said Southey.
“The organisation employs 64 staff members, the majority of whom come from the surrounding communities, and many of whom are infected or affected by HIV/Aids and who have come through its programmes.” HACT’s vision is to be a self-sustaining nonprofit organisation that empowers and develops a strong and united team who work to respond to the HIV/Aids crisis in ways that are community-driven. One of its self-sustaining income-generated projects is the nursery - Izingadi Zethema

Steve Dyer’s homecoming tour CONCERTS SA Music Mobility Fund proudly supports Steve Dyer and the Confluence Homecoming Tour which comes to five venues in KZN next week. Confluence is Steve Dyer’s sixth album under his own name, is a soundscape of diverse influences to mirror how societies are evolving, and how different cultures, belief systems and peoples have increasingly greater interaction with each other. At the core is the sonic reflection of Steve’s journey through his homelandSouthAfrica, andtheinfluences both personal and otherwise that are shaping this journey. Whatever the setting, Steve’s intention remains the same: to give a contemporary African voice to improvised and structured music. Pietermaritzburg-born Steve Dyer completed his music degree at University if Durban in 1981. Refusingmilitaryconscription, hethenleft South Africa and stayed in Botswana, the U.K. and Zimbabwe. In 1993 Steve returned to study at Durban music department and then relocated to Gauteng where he now resides. The Confluence tour to KZN is a homecoming after a long absence. Steve says: “Many of the sounds that inform what I compose were and are influenced by the early period in my life. This together with my musical experiencesinceleavingDurbanare what I look forward to sharing with KZN audiences. I am grateful to be joined by some young talented musicians, as well as my long-time friend and musical colleague Andile Yenana. “We will be performing music
Steve Dyer from the recently released “Confluence” project, as well as material from previous albums.” Steve Dyer who will be on saxophones, flutes and vocals will be joined by musicians Andile Yenana - piano, Mandla Mlangeni - trumpet/ flugelhorn, Amaeshi Ikechi - acoustic/electric bass and Lungile Kunene - drums. Funded by Concerts SA and Connect ZA, the Mobility Fund is administered by Concerts SA at The SAMROFoundation.ConcertsSAisajoint South African/Norwegian project housed under the auspices of the Stakeholder Hub within the SAMRO Foundation. Concerts SA also receives technical support from Con-
(Gardens of Hope) - that sells indigenous and imported plants. The centre uses the funds raised from nursery sales, plus donations, and has started 150 vegetable gardens for poverty-torn families in the surrounding communities. Theorganisationhasalsostartedgardensin schools and for community groups. “The gardens enables families or schools to grow their own vegetables and become foodsecure. They also provide an opportunity for families to bring in a small income by selling the excess produce. Hact itself buys some produce from our garden families for use in the respite unit and feeding scheme,” said Southey. She urged the community to support the income-generating projects regularly. “All the support we receive is greatly appreciated, as it has a positive impact for someone in need.” To find out more about the centre contact 031 765 5866 or visit 26 Old Main Road, Hillcrest.

OMPASS Waste Services, ‘spread the love’ to sick children in private and government hospitals around the country through their BeLoved Campaign last week. Compass staff hand delivered packets of sweets to the paediatric wards in KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, Eastern Cape and the Free State, just in time for Valentine’s Day. “It is our way of bringing some joy to these children,’’ said Julie Venter, events manager at Compass Waste Services which was established in 1998 and is currently the largest healthcare risk waste treatment company in KwaZulu-Natal. “This is the second time we have implemented this Valentine’s campaign and judging from the smiles we received, it is a project which we plan to continue,’’ added Julie. One of the hospitals the Compass team visited in KZN was Netcare St Anne’s Hospital and then Edendale Hospital in Pietermaritzburg where the staff, patients and parents expressed their gratitude. “It was a wonderful treat for the children who are not feeling well,’’

on end, of home. It was a wonderful break from their daily routine.’’ Compass is responsible for providing healthcare risk waste treatment and disposal services to provincial and private sector hospitals and clinics, as well as other generators of healthcare risk waste. Next-gen ix35 Tucson revived for SA? >> The SUV will make its SA debut in October
H
YUNDAI will debut the thirdgeneration of its popular compact SUV at the 2015 Geneva auto show – the new Tucson. The new SUV will make its South African debut at the 2015 Johannesburg International Motor Show in October. SA could however see the return of the Tucson badge as Hyundai states “there’s a strong possibility we’ll replace the ix35” nomenclature in 2015. Hyundai renamed its Tucson the ix35 locally in 2010. It measures 4.4m long (65mm longer), 1.8m wide (+30mm), 1.6 tall withawheelbaseof2.6m(anincrease of 30mm). The new model is built on a new platform and offers 513 litres luggage capacity with the seats up. The ix35 is available in Europe with two 1.6-litre petrol engines
(100kW GDI or 130kW T-GDI) and three diesel options; 85kW 1.7-litre and two 2.0-litre units tuned to 100kW and 135kW respectively. Engines can be mated to either a sevenspeed dual-clutch transmission (7DCT) or a six-speed manual. DesignerPeterSchreyersaid:“Design expresses our progressive spirit and passion, and it is transforming our brand. The Tucson has a bold and athletic presence achieved through refined, flowing surfaces, bold proportions, sharplinesandmostimportantly, our newest generation hexagonal grille – our brand signature. The front of the Tucson is dominated by Hyundai’s signature hexagonal grille and new LEDs. “Overall the design is sportier than the outgoing model with assertive flanks, redesigned rear bumper and

In terms of safety, it’s equipped with an autonomous emergency braking system - automatic braking whenever it detects an unsafe closing speed with a person or vehicle ahead. Its active bonnet system raises the vehicle’s bonnet to cushion the impact shock in any frontal collision with a pedestrian or cyclist. Peugeot freshens up its 208 hatch
MOTORING
19
>> It’s an all new 2015 for Peugeot
P
EUGEOT’S best selling vehicle was not about to go stale anytime soon, but to give it an even fresheredgeinitscut-throatsegment, Peugeot has treated it to a raft of improvements for 2015. A fresh-but-familiar look is ushered in by a redesigned front bumper that houses a wider grille, new ‘twotone’ headlights, taillights that have been reinvigorated with a clawshaped LED pattern and a new range of alloy wheels. Its young-at-heart target audience will also have more colour and exterior personalisation options, highlights beingtheOrangePowerpaintoption and the Menthol White exterior styling package as you see in the gallery above. Undercover detectives are not listed among the target market for the former option. Not much changes inside, where the 208 already stands apart with its small steering wheel, higher-than-usual instrument panel and large touch screen. There are, however, a new batch of

gadgets on offer, including Active City Brake,MirrorScreen, reversecamera and a new park assist system. On the engine front, Peugeot continues to offer its normally aspirated PureTech three-cylinder petrol engine in 1-litre and 1.2-litre guises, pushing 50 and 60kW respectively, and they’ve been joined by a turbocharged, direct injection version of the 1.2. Mated to either a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic gearbox, the new 1.2 turbo motor develops 82kW and it can be paired with a new ‘GT Line’ trim, which adds an extra dash of street cred with its GTI-like interior and exterior design enhancements. The 1.6-litre turbocharged GTI also soldiers on, albeit with some new design features, while the aforementioned GT Line is also available with upper versions of Peugeot’s 1.6-litre HDi engine. Which of these models is coming our way will be made clear when the new 208 hits South African showrooms during the third quarter of this year. — Supplied.
No room for drinking and driving HAVING a beer or a glass of wine before a meal or drinking cough syrup before hitting the road could see you fined or tossed in jail as the Department of Transport has proposed a zero blood-alcohol limit. A proposal to cut to zero the current maximumalcohollevelof0.05g/100 mlofbloodwas publishedearlierinJanuaryintheGovernment Gazette. The legal alcohol level was dropped from 0.08g/100ml in 1996. Those who wish to comment on the new bill and drink-driving restrictions, have until February 27 to respond as the draft bill has yet to go through the parliamentary process. The original National Road Traffic act reads: “No person shall on a public road- (a) drive a vehicle;or(b)occupythedriver’sseatofamotor vehicle the engine of which is running, while the concentration of alcohol in any specimen of blood taken from any part of his or her body is not less than 0.05g/100ml, or in the case of a professional driver referred to in section 32, not less than 0.02g/100ml.” The amended bill reads: “No person shall on
a public road (a) drive a vehicle or (b) occupy the driver’s seat of a motor vehicle the engine of which is running, while there is concentration of alcohol in any specimen of blood taken from any part of his or her body.” According to the draft bill, then the section governing the blood-alcohol amount/limit has been omitted, meaning if you’re found driving withanyconcentrationofalcoholinyourblood, you can be charged. The bill was first proposed in2011bythenministeroftransport,S’buNdebele who had been in meetings with the Automobile Association for two years before it was proposed to parliament. AA spokesperson Marius Luyt said alcohol played a major role in SA road deaths. He said a zero alcohol level would not be too drastic as current levels are currently very low, reports Beeld. The chairman of Justice Project SA, Howard Dembovsky, said: “The advantage is it sends a clear message against drunk driving but the disadvantageisthatpeoplewillbecriminalised over any type of alcohol.”

Historic Dusi victory for Birkett >> A fifth title for Dusi winner FEVER REPORTER
T
WENTY-FOUR-year-old Andy Birkett further etched his name into the Dusi Canoe Marathon record books on Saturday when he edged out 2013 winner Lance Kime and 'Dusi Darling' Sbonelo Khwela in record time on route to clinching a fifth race title. Given Birkett's young age, the feat is even more impressive and the Euro Steel ace now joins race legends Peter Peacock, Harry Fisher and Gordy Rowe on five victories and while 'Dusi King'GrahamPope-Ellis'recordof15 titles remains safe, for now, Birkett is fast closing in on second on the list Martin Dreyer, who won the race seven times.
Birkett became the first person in the 64 year-old race's history to drop under the eight hour mark as when crossed the line in 7:55.35, five minutes and eleven second ahead of Euro Steel team mate Kime. "Today feels like the first time that I have won Dusi; I am really stoked to be honest," said Birkett. "My build up wasn't ideal coming into Dusi but no build up is so I am just really happy that I was able to pull it off today! "I'm not chasing records, I am not trying to overtake anyone for total number of wins. I just want to take each year as it comes as I really enjoy paddling and Dusi is such a special race. There is a great build up, the community really gets together for it and it's great to be here with a victo-
