Climber rescued from Kloof Gorge FEVER REPORTER

A

CLIMBER was rescued on Sunday afternoon when he apparently slipped and fell approximately six meters between two rock faces in Kloof Gorge. Emergency services, including the fire department, ER24, Metro police, SAPS, Vema and Rescuetech, joined forces and worked as a team to set up a rescue system to hoist the climber back to the top. According to ER24’s Werner Vermaak, “Some rescuers managed to walk about three kilometres around

the cliff face to access the patient while others were busy with the rope rescue system. “When they arrived at the patient they found that he sustained a fracture to his foot, multiple lacerations and a possible concussion. He was treated on site for some of his injuries andlaterhoistedtothetoptobetransported to Hillcrest Private hospital for further care.”

Spillage nightmare >> Pipeline was to be decommissioned JEFF WICKS

T

HE aging fuel pipeline which ruptured and spilled over 200 000 litres of diesel into a plush Hillcrest housing estate was due to be decommissioned this year. The 50-year-old Durban-to-Johannesburg pipeline (DJP), operated by Transnet, had reached the end of its lifespan when internal pressure caused a weld-seam to shear last week. The clean-up operation in the wakeoftheenvironmentaldisaster— expected to stretch over months and come with a multimillion-rand bill — is in full swing. The pipeline was repaired within two days of the incident and the supplyofdieseltothehinterlandhasbeen restored. An explosion which accompanied the rupture had roused bewildered residents from their beds on the eve of Christmas, with diesel fuel surging from the burst underground pipeline and into their properties. While millions of litres of fuel course through the underground pipeline once more, homeowners are

counting the cost of one of the largest environmental disasters in the province’s history. According to Transnet’s Pipeline Development Plan, the DJP has “reached the end of its technical and economic life and is currently being replaced”. Currently used to transport petrol and diesel inland to Ladysmith, Bethlehem and Kroonstad, the pipeline is all but ready to be decommissioned. “The current operating capacity of the DJP is 3.72 billion litres per annum and decommissioning of the pipeline is planned when the MPP24 (a multi-product pipeline) becomes fully operational,” the report reads. Transnet spokesperson Saret Knoetze did not respond to detailed questions ahead of going to press. The chemical spill mirrors an incident along a multi-product pipeline

on a Mooi River dairy farm in September 2013. Over a year after 300 000 litres of petrol surged into the farm, which is situated in a valley, hazardous material clean-up crews continue to excavate the large tract of land. Their toil, long after the spill, will foreshadow what lies ahead for the Hillcrest home-owners affected by the latest spill. EThekwini communications head Tozi Mthethwa said that the clean-up was being handled by the provincial government and funded by Transnet. “EThekwini Municipality is monitoring the situation. Clean-up operationsbyareputablecompanyadvised by a competent hydro-geologist are underway.” “The National Department of Water and Sanitation as well as other government departments, both national and provincial, would also be involved in addressing this matter. Transnet is already paying for the costs of the clean-up.”

Fuel prices plunge SOUTH Africans will have some respite at the pumps with all grades of fuel dropping in price by over R1 per litre come Wednesday. The Department of Energy announced the price cut on Friday, which

had been informed by the continued fall of the crude oil price. Low-income households, reliant on illuminating paraffin, would also breathe a sigh of relief. “The Department of Energy here-

with informs the public that the prices of petrol, diesel, illuminating paraffin and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) will decrease with effect from 7 January 2015.” •Petrol will decrease by 127 cents/ litre. •Diesel will decrease by 105 cents/ litre. •Illuminating paraffin (SMNRP)

will decrease by 144 cents/litre. •Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) will decrease by 210 cents/kilogram. “The main reason for the fuel price decreases is the continued drop in the price of crude oil which led to a decrease in the prices of petroleum products in the international markets,” said the department. — The Weekend Witness.

WINSTON Park dog was stabbed during a house robbery at Jan Smuts Avenue, recently. According to the Kloof and Highway SPCA’s Barbara Laubscher, the SPCA was contacted to assist in restraining the dog as it had become aggressive and was in shock after his horrific ordeal “The 13-year-old staffie was protecting his family (the mother and children) as his owner, was away on business in England,” she said. Laubscher said that when his owner’s wife opened the patio door to let the staffie out, he began barking hysterically. “As she went to check on the staffie she realised intruders were

in the garden. “A man with a knife grabbed her around the neck, pushing hard against her collar bone. At that moment Kingsley attacked from the opposite side, and the knife that was being held against the owner’s wife plunged into the dog’s back,” she said. The men managed to escape with a car, jewels and other items. SPCA’sInspectorAbramswasthefirst onthe scene and transported the dog to the SPCA "Kingsley was stabbed in his back, but luckily did not sustain any serious injuries to vital organs. Dr Yeshindra Govender treated the wounds and a drain was put in to help drain the blood from the wounds," he said. The heroic staffie is on the road to recovery.

Everyone is equal FEVER REPORTER THE Sunflower Fund commissioned the third year students from design colleges and technicons across South Africa to design the 2015 bandana for National Bandana Day. The judges were overwhelmed with the number of entries received and the high standard of the designs. They had a tough time making the final decision. The winning design and third place have been proudly awarded to Cape Peninsular University of Technology (CPUT). This is the first time since the inception of this competition that CPUT has had two entries in the top three within the same year. The inspiration behind the winning design relates to how every person in the world is different, but when put together, they create a beautiful pattern. The winner particularly usedSouthAfricanshapesandtraditionalpatterns to illustrate this. The design symbolizes that everyone is equal, no matter who they are and that by standing together, we can give hope and decorate each other's lives in a positive way. The second prize was awarded to Durban University of Technology student team Terry Jonyo, Neliswa Jili and Nthabiseng Molefe collectively who will share a Pick n Pay voucher to the value of R3000.

CROW’s director Claire Hodgkinson said she cannot stress enough the important role that these calendar campaigns are playing in raising crucial funds for the organisation and as such she is appealing to the public to please show their support and buy the 2015 calendars. “Fromthebuildingofnewenclosures and upgrading our clinic, to the purchase of a brand new 4x4 wildlife rescue and release vehicle, these calendar campaigns have become indispensable to our work,’’ said Hodgkinson. The Nile crocodile.

HEZULU Safari Park is happy to announce the arrival of Christmas babies to the park in the form of 28 Nile crocodiles on Christmas Day. The following day, during a demonstration, the last four were hatched of that clutch. According to Tristan Dickerson, the general manager of the park, "Nile crocodiles lay between 25 to 80 eggs at a time normally around October to December which take about three months to hatch. The amazing thing about crocodile eggs is the sex of the

baby is determined by the average temperature around the egg for the incubation period," he said. "Eggskeptattemperatures less than 31.7 or over 34.5 degrees celsius we produce female hatchlings and eggs kept between these temperatures will produce male hatchlings." Phezulu’s first clutch hatched just one day short of three month predicted incubation period and there are still another 10 nests to hatch over the next two months. Most of the babies all hatch around the same time triggered by the first hatchling

calling for its mother. "In the wild when a hatchling hatches the baby will call for its mother who will gently pick it up in her jaws and carry it to the water. This call will trigger the other to push through the eggs so they all hatch around the same time. Phezulu Safari Park has hourly tours though it’s Reptile Parkwhereguestscangaininsight into the fascinating lives of the Nile Crocodiles, Indigenous and exotic snakes with daily crocodile feeding at 12:30followedbyavenomous snake demonstration and if you are lucky also crocodile hatching," he concluded.

The skin is actually the biggest organ in the body. Unlike other organs such as the liver and kidneys it is visible to the naked eye and any changes or abnormalities are easily and quickly seen. Under normal circumstances the skin does not really need too much in the way of attention. A good healthy diet will often be all that is required to maintain a healthy looking skin. Ectoparasites, particularly fleas, can be the cause of severe problems with the skin. They may cause problems themselves but often may aggravate an existing condition. We have so many very efficient flea control products available today that there is no excuse for a pet to be covered in fleas. If you are having a problem with fleas ask our staff about the best way for you to control them. In dogs and cats that have long hair, more attention needs to be given to the upkeep of the coat. (Remember this when you are thinking of purchasing a long haired pet- do you have the time to devote to this?) These animals need to be brushed regularly to keep their hair from becoming knotted. It is important that animals with long hair should be trained from an early age that grooming is an integral part of daily life .These animals must become used to being groomed and in fact often enjoy it. There are many different brushes and combs available for optimal grooming and our shop staff will be able to advise you in this regard. Bathing of animals is a debatable point. Overzealous bathing can in fact destroy the equilibrium of the skin by removing the protective oils produced by the skin. The removal of these protective oils may allow the invasion of bacteria and fungi into the susceptible skin. It is important that a correct shampoo is used for the bathing of pets. The acidity of the skin of animals is different to that of humans and so a human shampoo is not the best thing to use. Various shampoos are available, made specifically for pets. These will keep the animal’s skin in it’s correct physiological condition. Specific shampoos for specific skin and coat conditions should be used under the guidance of your veterinarian. As was mentioned it is quite easy to notice if your animal’s skin is not looking as it should. There are a host of conditions that may occur where the skin is affected secondarily and the skin itself may not be where the problem in fact lies. Treatment of the skin itself will not improve such a condition. These cases need to be seen and treated specifically for a possible underlying cause for them to improve. Allergic skin conditions are another host of skin conditions that may need specific attention. These may be controlled with special diets, should they be a food related problem. A healthy shiny coat indicates a healthy pet. Should you find a skin related problem with your pet, a trip to your veterinarian should be your first line of action. Dr Alan Isdale

When does a car become a classic? >> 1969 VW Beetle is considered a classic

I

T’S a definition dilemma and a burning question among car enthusiasts — when does a car become a classic? Agreeing on an impalpable point in time that constitutes a “Classic Car” definition is rather challenging. While one can consider a veteran car to be one built before World War 1, a vintage car to be one built before 1930 and postvintage a classification used for cars built between 1930 and the end of World War 2, there is definitely a grey area on what cars built after this point are considered to be. Some may consider a car made in the fifties as a classic. Although there is no precise definition, the Classic Car Club of Americaconsidersacartobeclassicifaged

between 30 and 49 years, and modern classics are defined as cars aged between 15 and 25. Aside from age, there also has to be some aesthetic appeal for a car to be considered a classic and appreciated as such. Whether this be the design, colour or timeless engineering, a classic beauty needs to have a somewhat subtle envy factor. So would a 1969 Volkswagen Beetle be considered a classic? Absolutely. The Volkswagen Type 1, affectionately theVolkswagenBugorBeetle, isrenowned for being one of the first rear-engined cars ever launched. With more than 21 million manufactured since its inception in 1938, the Beetle is the longest-running and most-manufactured car of a single design

platform worldwide and, as the years have passed, various models have come and gone. Despite this, the Beetle has most certainly stood the test of time given that the “new Beetle” was launched in 1998. Placed fourth in an international poll for the world’s most influential car of the 20th century undertaken in 1999, the VW Beetle will go down in history as one of the most classic cars. Despite being around for over 70 years, it never loses its appeal. As an ideal first collector car, the Beetle is a firm favourite among classic car enthusiasts. How does one get their hands on a classic VW Beetle? Well, there are various sellers worldwide that you could purchase one from and subsequently embark on a rewarding restoration project. — Wheels24.

DRIVERS should always do their best to be prepared to respond to any emergency. Even though you may not be trained medical professionals there are often small bits of assistance one can provide with first-aid and an effective and fast response to smaller emergencies. Arrive Alive advises drivers to travel with a first-aid kit in vehicles or have one at home. Many of us could do with some advice on what’s needed in such an emergency medical kit so Arrive Alive approached road-safety partner ER24 with questions about emergency preparedness — and that emergency kit. A first-aid kit should not be a hassle to take with you on holiday or keep in your vehicle. A good size is usually something that can fit comfortably into your cubby hole or one size larger that you keep in the boot of your vehicle. What would be the most important pieces of equipment and supplies in such an emergency medical kit? Items to treat burn wounds, cuts, bruises, splint a fracture, band aids, scissors, tweezer, treatment for insect bites and stings as well as disinfectant. If you prefer to keep medicine in your first-aid kit — headache tablets, anti-nausea and vomiting. It is important that only a responsible adult make use of these medications and that no prescription medications are kept in the first-aid kit. Also do not administer your prescription medication to someone else, even if you use the same medication. What would be the most important essentials to carry in a mini-kit. Bandages, band aids and antisepticsolution.Sunblockwouldalso

be a good item to keep in your firstaid kit as well as after-sun lotion. The content of your first-aid kit largely depend on where you will be travelling to and what is most likely to happen. If you are a regular outdoorsman you would know what happened before and what you needed. What are the most common mistakes amateurs tend to make when trying to perform first aid? Be smart and keep the right things in your first-aid kit. The most important things are a CPR mouthpiece should you need to perform CPR,somethingtostopbleedingand splint fractures. This includes band aids, bandages, dressings, strapping, gauze etc. Probably the most important of all is medical gloves. Protect yourself before you try and help others. This should be in every first-aid kit, regardless if you intend to use it on your family or not. Are there specific measures the amateur responder in an emergency should rather avoid and leave to the trained professionals? IfyouareunsurecontactER24on 084 124 and ask for medical advice. SMALL competitive fleet participated in the Christmas Regatta hosted by Royal Natal Yacht Club over the festive season. The regatta, which incorporated the Flying Fifteen Nationals, needed 10 boats on the water to constitute a fleet for nationals, but only nine boats ventured offshore in a variety of conditions. The regatta results still stand, but there is no 2014 national champion. Race officer Rob Samways managed to get in nine races over the three days of competition with eight races counting and one race being a discard. Newcomers to the fleet Paul Changuion and crew member Tim Duguid were crowned champions in the Flying Fifteen fleet. Changuion and Duguid have recently made a move from racing in the Hunter class to the Flying Fifteens. Thesailorswhohavehadthehonourofcompeting in events such as the Lipton Challenge Cup and other big national and international events worked hard in preparation for the national regatta. Their determined hard work paid off toppling defending champions Patrick Harris and Jeremy Kriek. They earned three first places, three second places, athirdandfourthtoendtheregattawith 16points. Their discard was a race that they didn't compete in - the final race on day two. In the 505 class there was a tie on points at the conclusion for the overall leaderboard. Brothers Thomas and Peter Funke were in

a demanding position claiming the top spot in the first four races. On the second day the brothers opted not to compete, but rather to get in some training ahead of the 505 World Championships, the conditions offshore were testing with winds in the low 20 knots and the four meter swell rising in quick concession. The talented duo spent five hours offshore flying across the water and as racing concluded disappointedly damaged a fixture on their rudder and were unable to race on the final day. Sharing the points with the Funke brothers were Ulrich and Marius Fourie who, like the Funke brothers only got on the water for two days. They both ended on a respectable 16 points. Samways said: "It is a treat for the Flying Fifteens to race offshore and the conditions were somewhat trying. The first day was perfect racing with a small running swell and winds just over 10 knots. Nine boats joined us that day. “The numbers dropped drastically for day two, but the conditions were extremely challenging for everyone out on the water. Myles was telling me that he clocked a boat speed of 14knots with only his mainsail powering them. Massive swells with winds consistently in the high teens and early twenties. Day three was overcast and drizzly but seven boats joined us which was fantastic. "Only two 505s participated which was disappointing as the World Championship is around the corner but well done to the guys that did come out. They got some really good training with the variety of conditions," added Samways.

McGregor set for ‘social’ Dusi FEVER REPORTER MULTIPLE world champion Hank McGregor will be paddling into unchartered waters at the start of the 2015 Dusi Canoe Marathon from 19 to 21 February as he sets off on a "social" mixed doubles Dusi with his wife Pippa. "I don't think I have ever started a paddling event socially. Ever. So it is going to be something new for me," said McGregor, who won the

Dusi K1 title in 2005 and was back on the top step of the podium with Martin Dreyer in the K2 race in 2006. SincewinningtheMarathonWorldChampionshipK1andK2titlesinOklahomaCityinSeptember,McGregorhasclearlymappedoutadifferent set of personal and paddling priorities, heavily influenced by the birth of his son Thorsten in mid-2014. "Pippa has been asking me for years now to do a Dusi with her once my competitive paddling days are over and it is something that we are really looking forward to." "Look, if we find ourselves alongside another K2 I will want to race them for sure. But it is not about the racing at all, it's all about fun. If we can possibly win the husband-and-wife prize that would be a real cherry on the top!" The 64th edition of the Dusi Canoe Marathon takes place from Camps Drift in Pietermaritzburg to Blue Lagoon in Durban from Thursday 19 to Saturday 21 February 2015. More information can be found at www.dusi.co.za. Hank McGregor has opted to race the 2015 Dusi Canoe Marathon "socially" with his wife Pippa. PHOTO: SUPPLIED
