Dogs maul duikers
>> Dog packs responsible for massive increase in buck deaths KALISHA NAICKER
>>kalisha@witness.co.za
S
PRINGSIDE Nature Reserve is an Upper Highway refuge to the endangered blue duiker, but the numbers of buck are quickly decreasing due to wandering dogs that “sneak” into the reserve and kill them. According to George Victor, chairman of Springside Conservancy, attacks by packs of dogs have dramatically escalated in the past three weeks alone, “decimating the population”. “Last week an adult pregnant duiker was unable to outrun the dogs and was mauled to death. In another instance a
young duiker mother was able to escape the dog pack only to leave her young duiker offspring to the mercy of the pursuing dogs,” he said. “Many other cases will never be recorded as the incidents take place at night or in the early hours of the morning. The dogsreturntobetheperfecthuman companion after a day’s sport - the bucks are simply mauled and left to die.” Victor said that the area around the reserve is one where “credit cards do buy the best type of dog food”, yet securing of the dogs on the owner’s property has not been adequate. Counsellor lives to heal >> Believing in the ability to overcome KALISHA NAICKER

URVIVORS of rape and sexual assault in the Upper Highway area are set to be given added support with the revamp of the Jes Foord Foundation. The Foundation opened its doors in 2009 following the brutal gang rape of Jes Foord. Foord said her aim was to start an organisation that supported victims following their own traumatic ordeals. The foundation works to restore lives after rape, provide counselling and to educate community members about the realities of rape in South Africa. The counselling room has now been given a new coat of paint and a play therapy corner has also been added for counselling of children. The foundation has a a qualified counsellor that works with survivors free of charge. SpeakingtotheHillcrestFever,counselorMi-
chelle Smith said, “Our revamped counselling room offers support and practical information for victims of rape and sexual violence in a safe environment. “We know that there are a lot of people who are in need of our help and have had nowhere to go. We want them to know that the foundation’s doors are always open.” Smith said that all blood tests, evidence collection and medication are given free of charge to all medical aid and non-medical members. “The foundation then offers on-going counselling to the survivor.” Smith said that she was born to make a difference. “At the Jes Foord Foundation we believe that everybody just needs a little bit of help to change their situation or lives. We believe in people, theirstrengthandabilitytoovercome,”shesaid. Smith’s father is a worker in a rehabilitation centre for alcoholics and drug addicts, so from

10 suspects arrested
>> Hard work and determination gets criminals behind bars KALISHA NAICKER
A
FTER several months of intensive investigation, the Hillcrest SAPS Crime Prevention, Tactical Response Team and Crime Intelligence finally made a break through that led to the arrest of 10 suspects last month in the Mariannhill area. According to Hillcrest police communications officer, Lieutenant France Mkhize, the arrested suspects aged between 19 and 29 were found in possession of flat screen televisions, power tools, cellphones and unlicensed firearms which are suspected to be stolen. “The suspects were wanted for armed robbery committed between January and September 2013. “They conducted a reign of terror along the Mariannhill Toll Plaza and are allegedly linked to other armed robbery cases committed in Mariannhill and surrounding areas,” he said.
Mkhize said the modus operandi of the suspects would be to target unsuspecting people at the toll plaza. “The suspects would send one or two of their partners to stand along the toll road pretending to hitch hike. “As soon as a truck stopped, the other suspects appeared from a nearby bush and attacked the occupants and robbed them at gunpoint,” he said. “Items such as cellphones, jewellery and cash were taken from the victims. Most of the targeted people were truck drivers travelling through the toll plaza to long distances such as Johannesburg and Cape Town.” “It is with dedication and perseverance of officers such as these that we can definitely eradicate crime from our community,” said Mkhize. IT IS WITH DEDICATION AND PERSEVERANCE OF OFFICERS SUCH AS THESE THAT WE CAN DEFINITELY ERADICATE CRIME FROM OUR COMMUNITY.
Robber caught redhanded MEMBERS of Durban South K9 unit arrested an 18-year-old man at Bohme Road in the Upper Highway area for house robbery last Thursday. According to provincial police spokesperson Thulani Zwane, the victim was at her house when she saw an unknown young man wearing khaki pants crawling in her dining room entrance. “When she shouted at the suspect asking what he was doing in her house, he approached her. However, the victim managed to grab a broom and strike the suspect. “During the struggle, the suspect managed to take a laptop, cellphone and fled the scene on foot,” he said.
Zwane said that members of Durban South K9 Unit who were on duty heard the complaint over the police radio and assisted to look for the suspect. “The members joined the community and security guards to chase the suspect up to Marborth Road in New Germany. “Residents indicated that the suspect disappeared between the properties at Bohme Road and a search using patrol police dogs was conducted,” he said. “The dog lead the members to the back of the hut where they apprehended the suspect who was hiding there. The suspect was charged for robbery and will appear in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court soon.

Ticks are back BIG, bloated and boozy with blood. Invading our peaceful homes and scuttling off to cause trouble when the authorities arrive. No, it’s not the annual December Vaalie invasion, it’s ticks. They’re back and they’re bad. After a mild winter, and with the rains already starting, you can be sure these guys are back. We are already seeing cases of
tick bite fever. This is a problem best PREVENTED. Put an effective spot-on like Advantix or Certifect, and/or a Preventic collar on. Keep the spotons going monthly until at least April. Carefully remove any ticks which you see. Spray your pet’s environment (blankets, kennels, bedding) with acaricidal sprays. Ensure that you do NOT use a pyrethroid or organ-
ophosphate on your cats! About a third of dogs with tick bite fever (Biliary) require blood transfusions and hospitalisation to come right; about 12% develop a “complicated” form of the disease such as renal or lung failure. The cost of treating a biliary case in-hospital can be well over R5,000 so prevention is far better than cure! Ticks can also transmit other
diseases like Ehrlichiosis (see next week) and cause tissue trauma and infections. Nasty, nasty things! Dr Anthony Zambelli Inanda Veterinary Hospital & Specialist Referrals 15 Howick Drive Waterfall 031 762 1816 www.inandavets.com
A fatal acci dent on Fields Hill
Two more M13 deaths >>”Death highway” claims more lives KALISHA NAICKER
R
ECENTLYdubbed“deathhighway” by residents of Upper Highway area, Fields Hill has claimed the lives of two and left 16 other injured in another incident where a truck and two minibus taxis collided last week. According to ER24 crisis communications’ Christo Venter, one of the taxis had broken down on the uphill
route, before Village Road. “Passengers were apparently getting out of the taxi when the second taxi, which had been travelling in the same direction, swerved to avoid slamming into the stationary vehicle. A flatbed truck also making its way up the M13, collided with both taxis.” Earlier last month, 23 people lost their lives when a truck smashed into four minibus taxis and a car in
Fields Hill. In an incident two weeks ago, a motorist died when he lost control of his vehicle on the highway. Residents says that the longer it takes for the Department of Transport to take action, the more lives are being lost. “This death highway is claiming more lives every week and it is time something is done. We cannot sit back and watch lives being lost,”
said Gillitts resident Carter Smith. “As motorist we all have a role to play in safety on our roads. “We need to adhere with speed limits and obey rules of the road,” he added. Another concerned motorist, Trish Naicker, who travels on Fields Hill daily said, “For how long must we fear for our lives while travelling on this road?” “Let’s stop talking and start act-
ing. The DOT can implement more speed checks and have a stronger traffic police presence until a viable solution is made.” However KwaZulu-Natal Transport Department spokesman, Kwanele Ncalane, said that they are aware of the incidents, and the matter is being investigated. “The situation on the M13 is concerning and we are in discussion on ways to improve safety,” he said.

Dog owners urged to secure premises “Besides a direct contravention of the bylaws, moral and ethical questions need to be raised,” he said. Victor said that locals are very fortunate to have these creatures on their doorsteps and to be able to appreciate living so close to nature in what has fast turned from a country village into a bustling town. In addition to the duiker, the reserve is home to bushbuck, mongoose, owls and magnificent birdlife and Victor is urging the community to protect these species. “With Hillcrest and other neighbouring areas under pressure to accommodate a future burgeoning population, every effort must be made to
secure every piece of natural space that we can as part of our heritage,” he said. “Preserving our fauna such as the duiker is the responsibility of every resident and is part of looking after our wider environment whilst we still can. This is non-negotiable.” Shaun Lyle, chairman of Hillcrest Park Neighbourhood Watch (HPNW), said that he has had many reports of dogs roaming in the reserve at night. He said he is appealing to dog owners to secure their dogs within their property so that there is no opportunity for them to cause harm to the wildlife. “HPNW does not only provide

investigating information being received by the community and severe consequences are likely for the owners and their dogs. “We need the community’s assistance to prevent future incidents. Let’s stand together and decisively stop the slaughter.” Hillcrest police spokesperson Lieutenant France Mkhize said that the police have received reports of dogs in the reserve and the matter is being investigated. “Once the owners of the dogs responsible are identified they could face hefty fines. I urge all dog owners in the area to adequately fence their yard to prevent these incidents.”
Municipality facing bankruptcy? WEEKLY REPORTER
BACKdated payments owed to more than 20 000 municipal employees could leave the eThekwini Municipality bank rupt. This comes after a court ruling stated that the council has to honour backpay ments owed to employees stemming from the unification of the council. The South African Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) said the municipality was legally obliged to pay its employees mil
lions of rands in staff benefits dating back six years. Last week the Supreme Court of Ap peals dismissed an appeal brought by the city against a judgement handed down by the Labour Appeal Court. The case, brought by Samwu and the Independent Municipal and Allied Trade Union (Imatu), involved a divisional agreement about conditions of service that were the subject of dispute between the unions and the city in 2007. Samwu regional secretary Nhlanhla
Nyandeni said officials who had advised the city to unlawfully implement the new conditions of service, should be held ac countable for the financial loss. Nyandeni said Samwu will meet its lawyers to discuss how best to address the matter. He said that after the meet ing, the union will meet city manager Sibu siso Sithole and the deputy city manager for corporate human resources Dumisile Nene. Nyandeni said the judgement is look ing at a “basket of allowances”, including

In the 2012/13 financial year alone, the city set aside R6.3 billion from its oper ating budget for salaries, allowances and salary increases. Municipal spokesman Thabo Mofo keng said the implications of the court’s decision were being examined. Mofokeng said that other than em

Shortage of blood in KZN >> SANBS are in need of donors as the holiday period nears KALISHA NAICKER

ITH a rapid spike in demand and the festive season fast approaching, the South African National Blood Service (SANBS)stockshaveprompted an urgent call for people to give blood. The Blood Service has just under five days’ worth of stock of blood that can be used in an emergency to save lives. Hillcrest SANBS sister in charge Ingrid Marlton urged residents to give blood now to help save a life in need. “The holiday period is always challenging for us with people going away. Our O-blood stocks are already at worrying levels.
“We aim to have at least six days’ supply available,” she said. “The need for blood never takes a holiday. We want to bolster our blood stocks now, but we need people’s help urgently.” Marlton said that one in three people will need blood in their lifetime, but the amounts of people that donate do not add up. “We are always in need of new donors, and while O- is the universal type, it is only used universally in life-threatening situations,” she said. “Cancer patients, people undergoing surgery, pregnant women and unborn babies all require donated blood that is their own type.” She said that one may never know when it may be a loved one in

The “possible Black alternative” support for Agang’s Mamphela Ramphele, calling her a “neo-liberal”, a label he hoists onto just about everyone who does not embrace his vision of a society where everyone is equal and they all march hand-inhand into the sunset singing songs of universal love and brotherhood – wonderful stuff! He gospelises thus: “Ramphele is an orthodox neo-liberal (not sure what he means by this term, I turned to Wikipedia which got me this: “The term neoliberal is now used mainly by those who are critical of legislative market reforms such as free trade, deregulation, privatization, and reducing government con-
trol of the economy.”). Anyway, back to Buccus: “The policies she proposes has no chance of ending poverty or even reducing inequality. But there is a huge groundswell of anger…against corruption. Ideally we need to find a way of simultaneously moving beyond neo-liberalism and halting corruption.” He then goes on to state that the Economic Freedom Fighters“underthecharismaticleader, Julius Malema” proposes to nationalise banks, mines and land – an action “that is not necessarily a progressive vision.” Well, that’s a relief. I can see old Buccus is sorely tempted by national-
ising everything in sight, but he’s too clever to put that thought on the table, rather he goes muttering on about “mixed economies” where nationalised industries have been run “in the interests of people as a whole.” Of course we already have such institutions in this country that have failed spectacularly to attend to the “interests of the people”. metre as it has motivational speakers. This is an amount so high it makes those of us who have embraced absolute ly buggerall in the way of social causes develop severe facial twitching. In the interests of truth seeking and national harmony, I snoutedout the num ber of someone on Saturday who fights for a smorgasbord of social causes in the KZN area, mostly political, sometimes en vironmental, funding dependent. I have been told this person once ap peared on RT, but cannot verify this with out laughing. Here is a slightly edited version of our conversation. And I trust you will agree that my questions were not only reason able, but as hardhitting and fair as those of an RT presenter and activist. Desiree: I think it would be fair to say that one of the most fundamental ques tions readers would like an answer to is how activists pay their rent.
Activist: I beg your pardon? Desiree: Is there a problem with this phone connection? Must I repeat myself? Activist: This is a silly question; suffice to say we have donors who believe in our ideology and assist with the basics of day today living so that we are able to con tinue with the higher pursuits of our cause. Desiree: So what you are saying is that your parents have converted their double garage into a flatlet and you live there rentfree while drawing a stipend from serving on a number of Boards? Activist: I am not comfortable with this line of questioning. Desiree: I am not comfortable with so cialism, but every time I pass an activist I am overwhelmed by the whiff of it. Have you ever considered getting a real job? Activist: I find your remarks very insensi tive and very ill informed. Socialists have no ‘whiff’ on them. I work a long day.
SABC that staggers from crisis to crisis and broadcasting material that would put the local bore to shame. The list goes on… Buccus sees Agang as a “possible black alternative”. Now I hold Dr Ramphele in great respect, but as an alternative government she is going nowhere. In all reality, neoliberal or not, the DA is the only political organisation that has any chance of taking over government and making it work in the interests of the people as a whole. But such a scenario would offend Mr Buccus’s socialist soul – if that’s not a contradiction in terms. Davis is a DA councillor in the eThekwini municipality.
Sometimes it’s eight hours. It is gruelling. Desiree: I wouldn’t quantify scribbling a slogan on a piece of cardboard and carry ing it to the headquarters of a multina tional gruelling; but whatever blows your undoubtedly unwashed hair back. Now about that job…. Activist: I recognise your agenda, but I will not be swayed by corporate devils. You are a capitalist mouthpiece! You are the reason the revolution will rise beyond expectations and prosper! Desiree: Canyousendmesome literature on Socialism and activism? Activist: No Desiree: Why not? Activist: My iPad is broken and my lap tops are being used by fellow activists; I am putting down the phone now. Desiree: One last thing before you go…. Activist: What? Desiree: Do you think you would be able to say Pussy Riot 13 times without gig gling?

HEN Hillcrest resident Shannon Mathie visited Malongane (15km from the Kosi Bay border) three years ago, she was unable to ignore the sightof stray dogs wandering along the roads and through the bush. She witnessed a dog that had been caught in a snare and took it for treatment. Matie said that a vet who attended to the animal estimated that he must have been trapped for around 10 days. Mathie and her family did their best to look after him, but they had to have him put to sleep. It was this experience that gave birth to the Protect Ponta organisation, where Mathie with like-minded individual Caron Grant Hean, aims to reduce strays in the area. The women aim to visit Mozambique at least once every two
Shannon Mathie with a furry friend. months to raise awareness among locals, treat dogs for rabies and sterilise as many dogs as possible to reduce the cycle of stray animals. Human deaths as a result of rabies are still occurring, but vaccinating all dogs will help reduce these numbers. She said that they have established a feeding programme which deals with the immediate issues of starvation – the stray beach dogs
have a local volunteer feeding them daily. “The owned dogs living in the rural community are also on the programme and we have a local lady who collects food from the border and another local man who distributes the food to the village,” she explains. “There are so many sad cases that we deal with all the time, but the rewards of seeing these animals being walked on a lead as opposed to being tied up or kept in cages is heart-warming,” said Mathie. To continue their work, the organisation will be hosting a fundraising golf day on 29 October at Kloof Country Club. A 4 Ball will cost R1800 and all proceeds will be used to sustain the organisation. For more information on the golf day, or to support Protect Ponta, contact Shannon Mathie on 082 464 3223.
A DAY without cooking or baking is a wasted one, believes 36-year-old chef Anna Dlamini from the Upper Highway area. Dlamini worked as a domestic worker after matriculating from Jabula School in Lidgetton in the Midlands. She could be found after hours in the kitchen watching and assisting the chef of the estate where she worked. After a few months Dlamini was promoted to the kitchen. The determined Dlamini enrolled at Westville College to study catering shortly after. She qualified at the end of 2000 and, in 2001 she became the head chef at Woodridge Estate – a dream come true. Two years later she got married and moved from Woodridge to the Whistling Duck Restaurant in order to be closer to home and her husband. “I organised my own wedding from start to finish and I thought to myself - imagine if I could do this for a living? Organising beautiful weddings and making a bridal couple so happy.” In 2009 Dlamini became a mother of twins and decided to stay at home with them for eight months. During this time the Whistling Duck closed its doors and towards the end of the eight months, Barbara Ziets-
r e v e F
man of Barbz Café and Deli offered her a head chef position. From the time Dlamini received her first pay cheque from Barbz Coffee Shop and Deli, she started to save towards her vision of co-ordinating weddings for those with very little time, resources and budget. The first thing she invested in for her business, which is now called “Khuhlekwethu”, a Zulu word meaning “make it beautiful”, was 50 metres of fabric. Over the next two years Dlamini grew her stock. In 2012 she told Zietsman what she was doing andreceivedthewoman’s support. “I was thrilled and very impressed! The equipment is now stored in the coffee shop store room, and a goat pot and portable gas stove have now been included in the inventory. Marquees, gazebos, draping and tiered wedding cakes have also been added to the Khuhlekwethu offering. It is still very much Anna’s business, but I assist with transportation and some marketing,’’ says Zietsman. “Thanks to patience, hard work and the support of my mentor, Barbz, my dream is coming true. I would love to grow the business to the point where I am co-ordinating a wedding every Saturday,” said Dlamini. For more information on Khuhlekwetha, call 033 266 6773 or email barbz@whitfieldfarm.co.za.

Where quality and tradition meet
>> R4.5 million Oxford freshmarket popup store opens in Hillcrest
T
he opening of Oxford freshmarket in Hillcrest on Friday, October 11 is tak ing fresh food shopping back in time. The brand new 1 700 m2 retail store which has been eight months in the mak ing opens this week in the new Oxford Vil lage with a traditionalstyle butchery, a massive greengrocer, a bakery and gro cery hall, all dedicated to fulfilling the specific and individual needs of custom ers. The Hillcrest Oxford freshmarket store, which is the second store for the brand, is a smaller, temporary "popup "version of the final store which is due for completion in 2014. The first Oxford freshmarket opened in May 2012 on the Bluff and attracts shop pers from all over the greater Durban area thankstoawinning formula of top quality products combined with the lowest pos sible margins. Oxford freshmarket Hillcrest will boast the most advanced inhouse processing butchery with the latest stateoftheart facilities possible within the retail sector. With a focus on producing the best quality meat in the highest hygienic envi ronment and with separate cold rooms each for lamb, beef, chicken and other

meats this butchery is like no other in the retail environment. Six fullyqualified butchers all with a minimum of seven years of experience each, headed up by fully fledged Fleis chmaster Gavin Gons, will service the butchery at all times. Going back in time to when a custom er could choose the weight, size and cut of their meat of choice no matter how un common, the Oxford freshmarket butch ery will be based on these “oldstyle”
butcheries. The butchery deli will specialize in wellmatured meats with both "wetma tured" and the old method of "dryma tured" cuts on offer. The range will include Agrade hand selected beef, lamb, mutton, freerange and fresh chicken, ostrich and venison at times. Gavin Gons said that he and his team of butchers source and handpick the best meats from the top farms in KZN and at
times further afield. "We are going back to the days when you could walk into your local butchery, know your local butcher by his first name and ask him for your favourite cut. We look forward to our customers walking in here with their favourite cookbook and asking for a unique cut whatever they want, we can do," said Gons. Future plans for this exclusive butch ery include the inhouse production of Ox ford freshmarket's own homemade ba cons, salamis, hams etc. A sliced and diced and preprepared range will also be introduced to the Hill crest store providing fresh and convenient vegetables and an organic range is also on the cards. Thebakerywillprovideaselectedrange of speciality breads as well as an exten sive range of rolls and buns the Bluff store has built up a reputation for over 10 000 rolls and buns are sold on average on a Sat urday. The opening weekend of the Hillcrest store promises not only to be a treat for the lowest priced shopping experience around but a great one for the taste buds too. The 1000 Hills Chef School will be positioned in the Rose Garden for the
weekend, cooking up tasty treats and showcasing the finest produce available in the fresh market. Kids can expel some of their bound less energy on a jumping castle and have their faces painted too. Owner of Oxford freshmarket, Brett Latimer, says of the new store: “It is a compact and comprehensive store that will take care of most peoples' needs while we are extending out the back to provide the most inclusive fresh food shopping experience possible for shop pers. "I am inviting the community to come and visit my fresh market where they will find the lowest prices and the freshest andbestproduceinthearea,"saidLatimer. ThelaunchoftheHillcreststorefollows closely on the heels of the first Oxford Li quors which opened on the lower level in August 2013. Further Oxford freshmarket stores are to be opened in Chatsworth, Amanzintoti and Pinetown within the next two years, with plans on the cards to open further stores in Richards Bay, the Western Cape, Port Elizabeth and Gauteng. Charity drive in full swing >> Community urged to bless a baby this spring KALISHA NAICKER
T
ULA Baby launched the Bless a Baby Spring Charity Drive last month and, with donations from the public, assisted hundreds of babies at the Robin Hood Foundation with new clothes, food and blankets. According to Tula Baby’s managingdirector,LeonJacobsthegenerosity of those who have already come forward and donated new baby items towards the charity drive is amazing. He said that this initiative runs un-
til mid-October and is encouraging residents to support the cause. “Those who still want to support the charity drive can visit a Baby Boom, Toys R Us or Reggies store to purchase and donate,” he said. “We are looking for new baby items such as blankets, toweling nappies, disposable nappies, baby grows, bibs, booties, jerseys and toys. One can look out for the brightly branded collection boxes in store to donate the items.” Jacobs said that all items will be
donated to the Robin Hood Foundation for distribution to underprivileged mothers from AIDS affected communities. The Robin Hood Foundation is an NPO, who, as its name suggests, takes resources from more fortunate families and redistributes those resources directly into the hands of the poorest of the poor in disadvantaged communities. Living by the motto, “re-invent real estate” the duo’saimistousetechnologytoitsfull potential in the South African property market. “We believe that we can use virtual means to make a ‘real’ difference in the ‘real’ world,” Tennant added. In addition to changing the world of real estate, the go-getters are also planning on initiating community uplift-
ment projects, to improve education inruralareas. “Wethinkthatthepoor education system in South Africa is the root cause of so many of our country’s problems. We would like to enable underprivileged communities to receive free internet using Project Loon started by Google,” Claasen explained. “If successful, this is a process that can be repeated in disadvantaged or rural areas across the country. We specifically think that technology and the internet is a great tool to improve education in these areas.”
Jan Claasen and Graeme Tennant

THE 2013 Msunduzi Road Challenge will be introducing tandem bicycles for the first time. This is after the organisers were asked about the possibility of having the two-person bicycles in the race. It has been suggested that tandem riders use this race as an opportunity to prepare for the big road classics coming up around the country in the few weeks after the race. The idea of introducing tandems to the race has added a slight spice to the event and gives the organisers the opportunity to advertise the event as a fun race and not just as a UCIWorldCyclingTourFinalqualifier which is something that Mr. Price Sport Cycle Club Chairman of KZN Kelvin du Sart mentions will increase interest in the race. “I think it is great that the organisers have allowed tandems into the race this year,” du Sart said. “They add a lot of character to an event and last year at the SA Champs
we had tandems and they do not influence the rest of the event. “Tandems also add to the speed of a race depending on conditions because they can be really quick on a flat course. The only downside is they are a bit sluggish on a hilly course, and if there not many then they won’t influence the race at all,” he explained. Race organiser Alec Lenferna has embraced the idea of having the tandem bikes in the race but the rules are laid down fairly strictly in order to prevent any confusion amongst the riders. The major proviso is the fact that tandems cannot qualify for the UWCT final and this is strictly a “fun ride” for the tandem bikes. Along with this there is not going to be an official tandem category which means that there will not be an official tandem result. More information can be found at www.msunduziroadchallenge.co.za
