Roaming donkeys killed on freeway >> One donkey had to be put down due to injuries

UT of the Blue Animal Rescue has once again come under the spotlight after six donkeys were killed after they escaped from its premises and found their way onto the M13 near the Kassier Road off-ramp last week. SPCA spokesperson Lisa Gadd said four vehicles collided with the animals and five donkeys were killed and one had to be put down due to its injuries. She said that shortly after the incident the Kloof and Highway SPCA staff and the Coastal Horse Care Unit met with Peter and Patti Ions from Out of the Blue Animal Rescue and it was agreed that eight horses and a donkey would be signed over by Out of the Blue Animal Rescue to the Kloof and Highway SPCA and the Coastal Horse Care Unit.

Judge rules on alien plants KALISHA NAICKER
Kalisha.Naicker@media24.com SIXmonths-that was the ruling handeddown to the government by Judge Rashid Vahed at the Durban High Court recently to tackle alien plants in KZN. The case was initially instituted by Kloof Conservancy in December 2012 to compel the state to comply with the Constitution and the law in relation to invasive alien plants (IAPs). The battle stemmed from the frustration members faced when dealing with IAPs. As members eradicated these plants from one spot, they found their way or spread to other properties. ConservancychairmanPaoloCandottisaid there were no regulations informing residents or communities that planting IAPs is illegal and needed to be removed. Candotti said the judgment is a vindication of all the Kloof Conservancy’s efforts. He said he hopes this judgment will send a stern message to authorities that the National Enviromental Management Act cannot, and should not, be ignored. See page 11.

Facing disappointment headon CHRISTA VAN DER WALT
W
E have all had to deal with disappointment sometime in our lives. Whetheritwasthatperfectjob you applied for and didn’t get, or the promotion you expected which didn’t materialise, or simply a beautiful tray of seedlings you planted that were eaten by an army of snails. As hard as it is for adults to work through a disappointment, it is much harder to see your child struggling to
deal with it. To hear her or him cry “but mom it is not fair”. Weallhadtolearntheharshlesson that life is certainly not fair, and it is a difficult one that is often repeated a few times throughout one’s life. Yet, it is possible to grow despite harsh blows, because it is not in the disappointment that one learns a lesson, but in the way we handle it. Do you go sit in your bedroom and sulk for a week, or do you straighten your back with a stern resolve to move on? One of my biggest disappointments a few years ago was realising that a person whom I called a friend for many years, told me so many lies thatitwasdifficulttoevenfindashred of truth in her demeanour. When I caught her out in a blatant lie, I spent a long time contemplating our “friendship” and realised that final lie was preceded by others.
I hate being taken advantage of, people that I enjoy spending time and I often go out my way to help peo- with. But the handful that I call my ple, whether they are close friends or friends have come a long way with me and have earned the status. not. But once bitten, forever shy. Sisu. The article explains that Sisu is a word that has no direct translation, but it refers to the idea of continuing to act even in the face of repeated failures and extreme odds. Itisawayoflivinglifebydisplaying perseverance even when you have reached the end of your mental and physical capacities. And therein, I think, lies the secret todealingwithchallengesorevendisappointments. A good friend always says “it is time to pull up your big girl broeks and get on with life”. It is a waste of time to mull over the disappointment. No, it is not easy to simply shrug it off either, but to spend weeks agonising over it is useless. Rather find the lesson, resolve not to bang your head against that particular door again and actively search for the positive in any situation.
Libraries have rules, stick to them I READ with interest and sadness the Hillcrest Fever’s article regarding the declining membership at our libraries. I somehow can understand this and I will describe an experience I had at the library last week. I arrived at about 3pm and while browsing for a book, became aware of a noisy child/ren in the library playground. To add to this a small child, obviously a child of one of the staff, entered the library making a loud noise, only to be bustled into a back room by what I can only assume was his mother. This is not the first time this has happened. It occurs frequently during school holidays. All my life I have been used to the quietness of
a library and earlier this year I was approached by a guard when my cellphone rang who asked me to take the call outside. Rightly so, I might add. I also feel that the quality of the books is shoddy, the Kloof Library is considerably better and this may also contribute to the problem in Hillcrest. I know your article is aimed at children, but older people are also important members of most libraries. It would be a pity if the library was to close due to a lack of support and I think that the authorities and the public should do all in their power to keep it alive. Brian Ness-Harvey

The competition, which began in 1978, recognises the determination and success of Weigh-Less members from across the country, who have lost weight, kept it off and made a total life-style change. This year the competition was very tough with contestants impressing the judges with their outstanding stories. However, there had to be a man and woman winner of the year and Free State’s Gustav van der Vyfer and Johannesburg’s Sanet van Rooyen walked away with the respective titles. Determined to succeed and get back to health, Vyfer lost 75.6kg in 14 months. “It is an honour to be chosen as the 2014 WeighLess Man of the Year. It has been a rewarding journey already, andthistitleiswonderfulincentive,”saidVan der Vyfer. Van Rooyen said she had family support to assist her in reaching her goal and lost 24.6kg in eight months. “I had written a promise in my diary to change my ways prior to rejoining Weigh-Less, and every night I would read it to remind myself to keep on track,” she said. Van Rooyen was surprised to win, she said. “I looked at the video of each contestant and thought they deserved to win,” she said. “I am nevertheless thrilled to have won. HE Centenary Medical Centre is home to many businessesthatprovideaninvaluable service to the Hillcrest community. Amongst these gems you will find "The Firm Hillcrest Team". It hasalwaysbeenalongtermdream and goal of Keri's to create a "one stop shop" where busy women may indulge themselves without the mission of travelling far and wide. With all the best people under one roof, her dream has become a reality and every woman's life just became a whole lot easier! For all your medical needs The Firm Slimming & Health Clinic was one of the first to move intothe"NewBlock"attheCentenary Medical Centre. For the past 8 years the owner, Keri Curtin has helped hundreds of clients reach their goal weight and transform their lives and bodies, one day at a
time. Weight Loss and Cellulite Reduction is her passion! Valya Schreiner was the first person to join the team as Keri began to see the gap in the market for people to attend their slimming sessions and have their nails done at the same time! Valya produces beautiful Acrylic dip tips or BioSculpture Gel overlays and her quality of work, her amazing attention to detail and her kind and thoughtful nature, leaves all her clients feeling pampered from start to finish. After 11 years in the beauty industry Nicky Arde decided to specialise in lash extensions and Keri approached her to join her ever expanding team. Nicky from Lash Illusions, has since furthered her skillstoincludeVolumelashextensions from the Adele Sutton range. Her expertise and exceptional skill is evident in the new advanced

technique which is softer and can be used to make your lashes look as natural as mascara, or as dramatic as Hollywood lashes. The choice is yours! As Keri was running out of space, she decided to take on second premises and approached Danni from Cabello Hair Salon to join the team. Danni, also with 11 years' experience in the industry, has a passion and flair for both cutting and colour techniques and her natural, bubbly nature will have you wondering why you ever went to anyone else! The fourth person to join our team was Caylee Hodson. Caylee Hodson Body & Skin is a privately owned, intimate salon, where clients can enjoy ultimate relaxation and indulgence, while attending to all their beauty regimes. From luxurious Sans Soucis facial treatments, to perfect Matsimela mani-
cures and pedicures, she strives to give her clients nothing but the best! Lastly we were lucky enough to have The Hillcrest Laser Clinic join our team. They pride themselves on using only medical graded lasers. They offer facial vein removal, Lamelle Salicylic and Gylcolic Peels and Collagen Induction therapy. If you are looking for laser hair REMOVAL and NOT just REDUCTION, look no further! "At The Firm Hillcrest our customers come first! Not only do we strive to provide service excellence, but an environment where quality and a passion for what we do provides you with unparalleled customer satisfaction!" OB And Weave CC was established in 2011,MatthewElliottcurrentlyownsthe shop in Fields Centre, Kloof, directly outside of the Virgin Active. Bob And Weave has its own clothing line, they supply health products and have recently added the Adidas range into their store. BOB & WEAVE was born out of a desire for comfortable, affordable gym wear that allows for easy movement without making one feel self-conscious by an ill-fitting garment. It is a range that is flexible and of seriously good quality but without an exorbitant price tag. BOB & WEAVE’S aim is that you feel good and are able to exercise comfortably in a gar-
ment that could easily convert into leisure sportswear. The high quality fabric is sourced locallyandtheyareproudlySouthAfrican. This cotton-lycra fabric is heavy enough not to be transparent, and light enough not to feel overheated. All the garments are easily interchangeable to create funky new outfits without spending a fortune. The Bob And Weave range is seasonal and will continue to grow. Matthew’s first shop was opened in Kloof Centre 18 months ago, and every month it has continued to grow. Bob And Weave also has an online Website www.bobandweave.co.za to accommodate those that can not travel far. BOB & WEAVE strive to reach the general needs of the average person who wishes to exercise, or prefers comfortable gym wear as leisure wear. Citroën latest C1 minis arrive CITROËN’S second-generation C1 has arrived in South Africa sporting a new design that, its maker says, is in line with the brand’s latest models, new engines and improved tech. The C1 is available in two four-door hatchback derivatives; the Feel (R168 990) and top-of-the-range Airscape (R194 900) with a retractable roof. A third entry-level variant powered by a one-litre engine and priced from R139 990 will be added in 2015. The car’s nose has characteristics from Citroën’s latest models, including a new two-part headlight design with vertical LED headlights. At the rear it has a glass tailgate with square lights. The Airscape derivative’s retractable fabric roof slides to the rear of the hatchback. The new C1 is 1.4m tall, 3.4m long, 1.6m wide and has a 2.3m wheel base that per-
