Kearsney College choir are world champs THE Kearsney College choir triumphed in the World Choir Games in Latvia on Sunday, winning three gold medals and World Champion status. The choir won gold in all three categories it entered — the Young Male Choirs, Scenic Folklore and Scenic Pop — as well as World Champion status in the latter. In the Scenic Pop category, clearly a favourite with the boys, several jury members recorded their performance on their cellphones and were some of the first to give a standing ovation. The Choir Games is regarded as the choir Olympics and is the largest competition in the history of choir music — attracting 27 000 participants and 460 choirs from 73 nations this year. The 64-member Kearsney choir received standing ovations on several occasions. The choir was also invited to represent Africa at the Games’ final Celebration Concert in a spectacular showcase performance, where one choir from each conti-

nent highlighted the music representative of its continent. During the Games, the Kearsney choir was invited to present a workshop on South Africa’s indigenous music, entitled “Voices and drums — a celebration of song, rhythm and movement”. With its signature blend of classical, pop and indigenous music, the choir has now won 12 gold and six silver medals at the eight World Choir Games held biannually since the inaugural event in 2000. The boys’ colourful exuberance and vigour, matched with top-notch musical performances, highlights all that can be achieved if differences are put aside and a common goal is sought, said Kearsney College headmaster Elwyn van den Aardweg. “The pride in African culture, the passion with which it is presented, andtheobviousteamwork are inspiring. Their unity and harmony show in and out of performance.” • The choir will perform at Kearsney on 22 July with the internationally acclaimed show choir Synergy from the United States. Booking is through Computicket.

Another truck crash on Fields Hill >> Warning signs are hidden and councillor calls for immediate action
KALISHA NAICKER

T
HE latest accident on Fields Hill has sparked residents’ concerns as they are once again requesting for trucks to be banned in the area. In the recent incident a truck crashedintofourtaxisleaving16people injured on Wednesday evening. This accident comes just months after a truck crashed into cars killing 24 people at the same intersection. According to Netcare 911 paramedic Chris Botha, a taxi and truck collided at the Richmond Road intersection. “Netcare 911 paramedics and their rescue unit found some of the injured trapped in the twisted vehicle. While the rescue officer used the jaws of life to extricate the driver, paramedics worked tirelessly to stabilise the injured,” he said. “After triaging it was found that
seven people sustained serious injuries while nine escaped with minor injuries. Paramedics treated the injured and then transported them to hospital,” said Botha. Ward 10 councillor Rick Crouch said these accidents could have been avoided if the Department on Transport heeded the pleas of the community and banned trucks on Fields Hill. “The department put up the signage that was promised almost a year ago to limit trucks usage on this road, however, thesenewsignsremaincovered. “What is the MEC waiting for? Does he want to make a big media production of unveiling the signage? “This accident could possibly have been averted if the new signage had not been covered and the old signage removed. I continue to ask the MEC whatishewaitingfor?Thisisaclassic case of tombstone legislation,” said Crouch.

Dropoff points at schools seen as ‘soft targets’ ROWAN PHILP A KLOOF mother, who was hijacked whiledroppingherchildatschoollast week, exposedapotentialnewsecurity threat for parents during school holidays. Susan West was confronted by two men outside Kloof Pre-Primary at 7am on Wednesday , and struck on the face with a firearm when she refused to hand over the keys of her Renault Sandero. The hijackers later fired at searchand-rescue police who took up the chase. The car was later recovered in KwaDabeka when the men crashed it. After dropping her five-year-old sonsafelyinsideforaclubevent,West (43) said she surprised herself by say-
ing “no” when the men emerged from behind a recycling bin and demanded her car and ring. “It’stheschoolholidays, that’swhy — normally there are neighborhood guys watching the entrance.” “ButIhavetosayeveryone, including the police, were fantastic — SA CAN, the security company, total strangers. An amazing lady driving pastdroveandgotmeintohercarand away from the scene. And a gentleman driving past actually chased them.” Kloof CPF chairperson Corné Broodryk said the hijackers “seem like opportunists” — especially since they’d hijacked a French car, which crime syndicates “don’t want”. But he was concerned that schools were seen as “soft targets”. This follows school parking-lot hi-
jackings at two other elite upper highway pre-schools — Small World and Jean’s Playglen — in the past 10 months. It is also the second hijacking in a month in Kloof, which had previously enjoyed a year of record-low crime following a partnership between the CFP, the SAPS, security companies and SA CAN. Broodryk said neighbourhood watch patrollers typically stood near school entrances during drop-off and pick-up times, but school holidays had left casual school visitors vulnerable. Colleen Phillips, Kloof’s principal, said holiday period events at schools needed special security arrangements in future. “That lady [Susan] was the first to arrive and no one else was around. I haveaskedtheneighbourhoodwatch
to start coming here from tomorrow [holiday events].” Phillips said community patrollers “unfortunately don’t often come in the morning”, but she hoped the incident might generate a new security schedule. Jean Dearman, owner of Jean’s Playglen in Hillcrest, said: “Parents are most concerned that they are vulnerable there. “Mothers arriving with young children have to unstrap them from car seats and gather bags for the children and their own bags, and there is no way mothers can take awareness of what’s around their cars.” Dearman said the school had cameras and a guard on site at all times, and encouraged private security and the “fantastic” Westriding community watch to park nearby during drop-

off time. The hijacking of a Renault — and particularly West’s model — is so rare in South Africa that security experts and police were scratching their heads as to the motive. Craig White, recoveries manager for Bidtrack, who joined the hunt for the hijackers yesterday, said: “It’s strange to them, hijacking is their job and they know what they want. “We don’t see makes like this hijacked. And if its a common target like Hilux or a [VW] Polo that’s hijacked, you know where to start looking for it, even if it doesn’t have a tracking device. But a Renault? No one knows where to start. Maybe someone needed spare parts.”

An initiative to prevent blindness

NEW organisation aims to provide affordable health care in an effort to prevent blindness. Setzkorn Health and Wealth Consulting in Kloof Old Main Road has opened its doors to Orbis Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal project manager to help reduce and prevent child blindness. Orbis is a global non-profit organisation and has worked in 92 countries, trained 325 000 eye-care professionals, provided 925 000 surgeries and treated 23.3 million people. Orbis programmes focus on building affordable, accessible and sustainable eye health services with the focus on paediatric eye health in sub-Saharan Africa. Orbis provides tools, training and technology necessary for partners to develop lasting solutions to avoidable blindness. According to Helen White, head communications of Orbis, sub-Saharan Africa has the highest prevalence of childhood blindness in the world. “In developing countries, up to 60 percent of children die within a year of going blind. Three-quarters of early learning is through sight. There is a strong link between childhood blindness and poverty,” she said. White said that specialised paediatric eye health is rare and expensive in AfricaandthisiswhereOrbiscomesin. “The Orbis Africa initiative is a com-

The initiative aims to strengthen existing eye health services and to establish new services where none exist,” said White. “These services provide screening and referral for eye diseases and offer high-quality treatment, including cataract surgical services and refractive error services. Orbis Africa aims to establish or strengthen 10 child eye health tertiary facilities by 2020.” She said that in order to ensure pediatric eye health services are successful, strong adult services must also be available. “Orbis Africa works in partnership with stakeholders from government to civil society and our work is aligned with national policy,” said White. “This is therefore a collaborative project which hopes to reduce avoid-
able blindness in children by addressing various aspects of the health system, such as referral pathways, providing public awareness and improving skills at all levels within the district health system.” Greg Setzkorn, managing director of Setzkorn Health and Wealth Consulting, said: “We are delighted to be able to contribute an office base for Ntombi Mkhize, the KwaZulu-Natal project manager, to work from. It is our way of assisting this worthy initiative,” he said. “Many people around the world are needlessly blind and Orbis plays a major role in preventing this. With KwaZulu-Natal having the highest childhood blindness rate in the country we want to do what we can to help,” said Setzkorn. For more information on Orbis Africa, contact White, on 021 447 7135.

Mandela Day inspires residents >> ‘It is time for new hands to lift the burdens. It is in your hands now’
A
S the first Mandela Day (18 July) after the death of Nelson Mandela approaches, residents in the Upper Highway area are joining forces to make this day count and help those in need. The idea of Mandela Day was inspired by Mandela at his 90th birthday celebrations in London’s Hyde Park in 2008 when he said: "It is time for new hands to lift the burdens. It is in your hands now." The United Nations officially declared 18 July Nelson Mandela International Day in November 2009, recognising Mandela’s "values and his dedication to the service of humanity and acknowledging his contribution to the struggle for democracy internationally and the promotion of a culture of peace throughout the world".

Fighting the inevitable winter bulge
7
F
OR many people the cold dark winter months invariably mean a small but often accumulating weight gain year-on-year. A small weight gain of only 1kg per year, in five years can mean a total weight gain of 5kg, and the need for a larger dress size (not to mention the health implications!). It is important to be aware of small fluctuations in your weight and be proactive in preventing a slow spreading of your middle! The following are simple yet effective tips that you can try to fight the winter bulge this year: Avoid the temptation to drop your regular water drinking habit for more hot coffee and tea. Particularly if you indulge in cappuccino and lattes with sugar. Buy fruit or herbal teas that can be just as good as water in hydrating, but also serve to provide warmth. Don’t let your exercise habits slip! More than ever, this is the time to keep up regular exercise. Done first thing in the morning, any exercise will heat you from the core for most of the day and maintain your metabolic rate. Beware of the craving for carbdense (often also high fat) foods and definitely be cautious about trying to cut all carbs during this time (this may exacerbate any cravings that you have if trying to cut back too much). Rather be very selective of your carb-foods usinglowGI as your guide, and choose wholegrain over refined options. Good choices include rolled oats, heavy dense low GI bread, rye

Help Stop Neck and Shoulder Pain: The Facts
Muscular pain in the neck and above the shoulder area is common after sudden trauma like a fall or a whiplash. It is also common due to smaller, repetitive movements or positions that we do all day. We can worsen muscular tension and pain by these incorrect positions or ease it by doing a few simple things.
bread, brown rice, whole wheat pasta, sweet potato. Plan your meals and snacks to include protein, this will sustain you for longer helping to control any cravings that you may battle with. For example, at breakfast including dairy (yoghurt, milk, or cheese), or egg, at snack times a small handful of nuts, or yoghurt, and at both lunch and dinner small portions of lean protein (chicken, tuna, sardines, cheese, ham, mince). Don’t cut back too much on fat! Healthy fats will also keep you fuller for longer, plus add more flavour to your meals. Seeds in your oats, peanut butter on your Provita, pesto with your pasta salad, olive oil over your salad with avocado.
Indulge in a hot milky drink after dinner.Whenmostpeoplecravesomething sweet, a steaming mug of Milo or hot chocolate, made with only milk is a wonderfully rich and satisfying alternative to chocolate. Allow one treat a week but make it a controlled and conscious decision. Whetheritisachocolatecroissantwith your usual mid-morning coffee on a Sunday, or a meal out on Friday night, or simply a small bar of chocolate with the Saturday night movie. Only once a week! This should not off-set your efforts and dedication during the rest of the week, plus it gives you something to look forward to. KeriStrachan isaregistered dietitian: keri@primehp.co.za
Sitting without armrests or with armrests too high will put strain on the muscles that support the neck and shoulders. It is better to have a chair with armrests at the correct height, or build up the armrests so that the elbows are supported and forearms horizontal. Strain is also caused by having to lift your shoulders so that your hands can reach your keyboard. Raise your chair so that your shoulders are relaxed and your forearms horizontal. Do remember to sit back into your chair, with additional support behind your lower back if required. Ensure that your head position is balanced with your chin in and looking straight ahead of you. Position your monitor so that the top of it is at eye level so that you do not have to look up at it. It is also important not to look down, while reading for instance - rather put your book on a bookstand so that you can look directly at it. People tend to get engrossed in what they are doing and remain in fixed positions which also places strain on muscles. It is important to get up and move around about every 20 - 30 minutes. You could set a reminder on your computer or an alarm at the other side of the room. Neck active range of motion exercises and stretches advised by your physiotherapist at these times are also advised. Sitting with you head turned, for example while talking to someone sitting on your side, is also not advisable. Rather turn your chair to face them. The same applies with a monitor or papers that are positioned to your side - put them directly in front of you. Long telephone calls, especially when the telephone is held between your ear and shoulder also, puts stress on the muscles. It is advisable to use a headset. Clothing and accessories can also place stress on the muscles of the neck and shoulder. Tight, narrow bra straps can apply pressure to the muscles below. This can be avoided by having bras with wider straps or placing thin padding under the strap to distribute the pressure. It may also be helpful to move the strap further outwards to the more bony area of the shoulder. A shoulder strap of a bag can have the same negative effects and is best placed over the bony area of the opposite shoulder, or not worn on the shoulder at all. A heavy coat can have similar effects, which can be minimised by using shoulder pads.

A walking stick that is too long will cause elevation of the shoulder on that side and cause over-contraction and strain on those muscles. It is therefore important to have a walking stick that has been measured for you. Sleeping on your abdomen with your head turned to the side is obviously also hazardous to your neck. Rather sleep on your back or side with well supportive pillows that keep your neck in line with the rest of your spine. These are just a few tips to reduce muscular strain of your neck. Tight, painful muscles can also be treated by physiotherapists by massage, trigger point therapy, myofascial release, specific soft tissue mobilisations, electrotherapy or dry needling and stretches. It is important to be assessed by your physiotherapist as neck pain and resulting tight muscles can be a secondary effect of other more serious pathology, very commonly your spine, which can also be treated by physiotherapy.

Welcome to Glen Carlou Glen Carlou was established in 1985 and since 2003 has been successfully owned and run by Hess Family Estates. To harness their farm’s vast wine growing potential, the vines are meticulously selected in terms of rootstock and clone, while every variety is carefully chosen for its compatibility to the terroir. Yields are kept rigorously low, ensuring that nature’s gifts are distilled in the flavourful grapes that they harvest. And in the cellar our winemaker Arco Laarman and his team join forces with nature to create three distinctive wine ranges.
Glen Carlou Gravel Quarry 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon This is an intense, rich wine thatwillmatureoverfourtoseven years and matches well roasted or grilled red meats. The aroma and flavour of this wine is spicy black cherry, plum and subtle floral anise with hints of dark chocolate. The finish is sweet full and ripe tannins which are soft and not overly extracted.

AAH, Pink Floyd. If you're in my age group - fortysomething - you might hold them to be one of the finest secular bands of all time. And one of their stand-out tracks is surely Time, with these lyrics: "Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time/Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines." It's all rather evocative of our rush-rush-rush modern life, where there simply doesn't seem to be enough time to do, well, anything. Enter then Hillcrest Kwikspar, and more specifically its pre-cooked meals. For a couple of years now I've thought that the store's range of ready-made meals was something of a well-kept secret. And many, many evenings I've availed myself of the likes of its Roast of the Day - a wholesome affair replete with vegetables and gravy. As a bachelor, I can't even begin to conceive of cooking something as nutritious. Never mind at the absurdly low price that this meal costs. But it seems that the word has spread around the community. “Most of our convenience meals we cook in the store,” says Hillcrest

THE Robin Hood Foundation says it has been blown away by the support for its 2014 “BuyABrick” campaign, implement ed to enhance and expand the Uminathi Crèche in rural Marianhill. Eire Contractors has contributed R50 000 towards the campaign, while Dezzo Roofing provided roofing for the 64squaremetrestructure. Fotakis Brothers has sponsored carpet ingand Carpet People is doing the installa tion, free of charge. Cretemix has donated the cement and Campbells Cargo has given R12 000 towards the structure which will allow the crèche to educate the existing 30 children and raise their numbers to more than 60. The children will be able to attend the preschool in a safe and warm environ ment which includes an ablution facility, kitchenette and storeroom. Throughout the year,Business Connex ion has empowered its interns to run a social responsibility project and raise funds on their own. Intern June Yende, CSI project lead, said “We are excited about the crèche and look forward to contributing meaningfully to the betterment of the pupils.’’ The Robin Hood Foundation still needs to raise an additional R50 000 to com plete the structural requirements of the crèche. Should anyone wish to contribute, no matter how small, to the worthwhile campaign, please phone 076 612 9060 and make your pledge.
KwikSpar co-owner Mike Egling, who quite incidentally was my rugby captain at Hillcrest High back in the eighties. “You know,” he adds, “we put an immense amount of training into our staff. Our highest independent health audit score was 99 per cent...and ourlowest92percent.And the reason we have an open-plan kitchen is because it enforces cleanliness. Plus customers can see what's going on behind the scenes.” But the range of ready-made meals doesn't stop with Roast of the Day. Not by a long shot. The deli also has everything - all freshly prepared, naturally - from stuffed chicken breasts to roast vegetables to curries to tip-top quiche. “In our own lifestyle we are really busy, so as a family we often eat from here,” says Mike. “It’s all food that we’re happy to feed our own kids.” “One of the reasons I think that our food is so good is that we've invested in a blast-chiller. So we cook it, and then blast it chilled, so it keeps its integrity and doesn't dry out.” Customers can then heat it at home - or ask for it to be heated in the store. Hillcrest KwikSpar has also built a bit of a name for its roast chickens, which are butter-basted. And it’s no accident that they can sell up to 500
birds a day. Meanwhile, between 6.30am and 8pm customers can order freshcooked take-away, from bacon-andegg rolls to all-day breakfasts. And the prices are simply precedent setting. Then there’s a new sushi counter, while Mike and his wife Leigh-Anne scour South Africa for the tastiest of treats. “After trying a couple of suppliers we’ve found the best pork pies,” reckons Mike. “And we've got a chilled courier who brings down our porkies, our Scotch eggs, and our Yorkshire puddings from Johannesburg every week.” That's also just touching the tip of the ready-made meals available at KwikSpar - and I almost said “convenience-meals” until I remembered that that term evokes preservativeladen, factory-made fare with all the taste and nutrition of cut grass. Which the food in this store is the very antithesis of. So, yes, we might live in a timepoor society. But Hillcrest KwikSpar - and its staff, who seem to genuinely delight in working in the store - goes quite some way to making modern life just a little less stressful, just a little less onerous, and a whole less hungry.
‘BuyaBrick’ campaign soars
Bonnita Groenewald, Saritha Ramsunder, Colette de Wit and Tarryn Cranmer from Eire Contractors. Eire has donated R50 000 towards the Robin Hood Foundation’s ‘BuyABrick’ campaign.
Ismail Cassim from Carpet People and Karl Stefano from Fotakis Brothers donated the carpeting and installation for the Robin Hood Foundation’s 64squaremetre crèche.
Rob and Pat Campbell and Frank George of Campbells Cargo, which donated R12 000.

KYMCO 300i Downtown scooter The KYMCO 300i Downtown scooter is a maxi scooter ability with a sporty ride midrange 300 cc fuel injected. At first introduction the Downtown appears larger than imagined. It ap pears very similar to its maxi sister the Xciting 500cc. It is a downsized version of the Xciting. The differences on this liquid cooled, single cylinder, 4 stroke fuel injected 300cc outside of obvious engine size causes no compromise except that your pocket book will notice. A smaller en ginemeanslesscost, lessinsurance(de pending of course on your individual rid ing record) and, though KYMCO’S get excellent fuel mileage, yes consump tion on this model will be even thriftier. You won’t be compromising perfor mance. The downtown characteristic of urban community itself, won’t wear out your patience it’s spunky, smooth and its torque and power is plenty!
The Downtown is slightly shorter in length with its total length being just on 220cm – 5,5 cm shorter than the 500 Xciting.It’salsonotastallastheXciting. The design has been adjusted to con quer city potholes while accommodat ing taller inseams. The Downtown also has a huge benefit in that it is extremely light. Without liquid it sits at a total of 166kgs making it light and manoeuver able. This means that you will have ter rific acceleration from a stop. Basically you’ll have the body of KYMCO’s suc cessfulmaxiscooterbutalittlebitlight er on the overall performance – which is a great way to explore urban environ ments. The Downtown’s lighter weight is truly noticed with its extra ease of han dling. Don’t let the size fool you. This ride is perfect for commuting through the towns and urban jungles. With its CVT transmission you have the expect

There’s a terrific sense of security all around you and its windscreen size is ample enough to deter discomfort. Its solid suspension is attributed to its aerodynamic smoothness. Its goodsized tyres, are there to reduce the bumpy ride and againtoprovidegoodlongdistancerid ing performance. The steering is light and responsive with a fantastic turning radius which is ideal for downtown urban travel small/ short turns. City riding offers total com fort and sense of security due to its ex cellent brake availability – with disks both front and rear. The fuel tank will hold up to 12,5 litres which is nearing the average size of your standard motorcycle. Anything higher, with a full tank would add to the overall weight slightly affecting ma noeuvrability of the bike. But this tank size, ample as the CVT engine is great on fuel, keeps the weight down for agile

S anticipation builds ahead of the eleventh Durban International Boat and Lifestyle Show, youngsters are gearing up for their participation in a threeday yachting and rowing regatta at the Durban Marina from 18 to 20 July. Organised by Sail Africa and the Durban Rowing Club, with sponsorship from the eThekwini Maritime Cluster, the regatta aims to serve as a development initiative for young and enthusiastic sailors as part of Sail Africa's mission. Taryn Millar of Sail Africa said that overall the objective is to provide “education, skills training and personal development and empowerment through the medium of sail training, for young South Africans who could otherwise not afford the privilege of participating in sailing”. “The project aims to provide life skills and

increased confidence and opportunities. These opportunities are currently unavailable to many young South Africans, ensuring them of a career path in the sailing industry, or a springboard to a career of their choice.” A highlight of the regatta programme is presentations by The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI). They will welcome the water bronzed sailors and rowers on Saturday from 1pm to 2pm and the silver sailors on Sunday from 9.30am to 10.30am. These are just some of the exciting offerings at the show. Tickets are R50 for adults and R30 for children over 12 and senior citizens. Children under 12 get in free if accompanied by an adult. Tickets are available at the show entrance. Course shakeup for Eston 2014
Riders gear up for the Eston 2014.
FEVER REPORTER THE Illovo Eston MTB Challenge organisers have decided to make some substantial changestotherouteofoneofthecountry'smost popular one-day classics that gets under way at the Eston Club on 3 August. Thechallengeofremainingcontemporaryis something that Illovo Eston MTB Challenge chairman Ant Foster, and the rest of the course designers, believes has led to the changes that have been made, and following years of successful trails, he believes the new route will be just as popular. "You always want to stay current and fresh," Foster said. "This is now the challenge for us, but we still want a route that [not only] caters for the top guys, but also for the people at the back of the field so we have made the changes
accordingly. "I have been threatening to take the plunge and make the changes, but when you have 2 500 riders at an event it is quite a risk. "I am happy with the way it has turned out and we are all mountain bikers here and we think we have done the right thing." Having almost entirely reversed the course this year Foster believes it has the same charm it has had in the past and the balance of the course remains the same with some tricky sections, but a lot of enjoyable riding. "The major difference is the direction — we have changed that completely which means you are using the same sections of track, but approaching them from a different angle. You still have to work hard in the opening sections of the 60km Illovo Marathon, but then you have great single track to play around on and really enjoy. "A few years ago single track was quite original, now all races use it which has meant that if we are going to use single track then it has to be the best around and from races like Sani2c and Karkloof we know what to expect from our single track," Foster explained. TheIllovoEstonMTBChallenge's60kmIllovo Eston Marathon, 40km aQuellé Half Marathon, 18km Tala/aQuellé Family Ride and the 10km Stihl Kids Ride take place at the Eston Country Club on Sunday 3 August.
