Building woes hit businesses KALISHA NAICKER
B
USINESS owners on Cadmoor Road in Hillcrest are enduring the short-term pain of the aqueduct construction since its inception about a year ago, but some are wondering if they’ll be there to see the long-term gain. Donnae McReynolds, owner of coffee shop Lucky Bean, which is also a playground and children’s party venue, says she has been in existence for almost four years, however, since the start of constructionalongCadmoorandGeversroads a year ago, her profits are down by almost 45%. “It seems as if we are fighting a losing battle with those in charge of construction on these roads. “Apart from businesses bearing the brunt of the problem, there are also numerous issues which never get addressed,” she said. McReynolds said residents and business owners are never informed in advance which road is closed and moreoften thannot, theyhaveto turn their vehicles around at dead ends every morning.
“There are regular water and electricitycuts, someareevencutoffatthe same time, which makes running a business and a household difficult. “We are often not informed of the cuts and it happens at random hours of the day,” she said. “My employees also have a hard time travelling to and from work as there is no public transport on this ‘dirt’ route. “They often have to walk past huge trucks and graders, which we are all unhappy about.” Irate business owner said emails and requests for updates on the project fall on deaf ears, and no one appears to be concerned about the issues the community is experiencing. Lucky-Bean employee Pretty Gcwabaza said she often gets to work late. “This is causing major problems for me, and if I did not have such an understanding boss I would have been fired by now.”

Spring - time to dress your lawn SPRING’S sudden and welcome arrival has brought with it nostalgic memories of picture perfect gardens and lazy summer Sundays, picnic blankets and family cricket matches. But no dream garden is complete without a beautifully manicured lush lawn – so that is just the place to start. After a dry winter, Farmyard Organics, KZN’s leading composting company, recommends giving your lawn the fivestar treatment this spring. “One of the best things you can do to maintain a healthy lawn is the annual process of top dressing with Farmyard Organics’ Lawn Dressing. This helps to build up the quality of the soil, feed your lawn and, by filling small hollows and bumps - evens out the surface, giving your lawn a professional elegance,” says Farmyard Organics owner, John Kidger. FarmyardOrganics’LawnDressingismade up of a blend of compost and Kraal manure that is high in nitrogen for vigorous growth. It also assists with water retention and improves the
lawn’s drainage over time. “For most effective results, we recommend that an even layer of about 10mm is spread over the entire surface of recently mown lawn and then watered straight after application,” said Kidger. Farmyard Organics is a composting company with a big vision and a proudly green ethos. They take 100% natural waste compounds, including kraal manure, spent mushroom substrate, horse manure, sawmill waste, bark and greenwasteandconvertthiswasteintoorganic soil-enhancing products that have been specificallyformulatedtoensurethebestgrowingenvironment – for your lawn and garden. Farmyard Organics’ Lawn Dressing and their other products are available at leading retail partners in Hillcrest, Pinetown and Kloof, including Builders Express, EMART, Dieters Nursery, That Nursery (Westville) and Marriri Trading. MEC ‘will curb mini casinos’ AMANDA KHOZA THe province’s finance boss assured concerned organisations that she would curb the roll-out of mini casinos. Last week The Witness (Fever’s sister paper) reported Pastor Mervin Reddy’s emotional plea to stop the KZN Gaming and Betting Board from approving 13 licences that would see the rolling out of mini casinos in malls. Reddy’s emotional appeal was the most personal of the objections presented at the hearing at Westville Country Club. Tuesday was the first of 13 public hearings on allowing electronic bingo terminals in shopping malls in KZN.
Fouroperatorshaveappliedfor licences at 13 malls, including the Pavilion and Amanzimtoti’s Galleria. KwaZulu-Natal Finance MEC Belinda Scott has reassured several organisations around the province that she intends amending regulations that aim to allow mini casinos in malls. This she said in a letter sent to attorney Stephen Franke, who filed an objection against the mini casinos in malls around the province on behalf of 21 organisations. The Witness has a copy of the letter, dated 9 September, which reads: “I intend to amend both the KwaZulu-Natal Gaming and Betting Regulations, 2012 and the
KwaZulu-Natal Gaming and BettingBoardTaxAct2010inthenear future,” and is signed by Scott. Scott said amendments will include measures to curb the proliferation of electronic bingo terminals in public areas in close proximity to children and disadvantaged communities. Durban businessman Vivian Reddy welcomed the statement, saying that Scott “recognised that gambling in KZN was over-saturated”. “This shows that she cares about the Call masses … the excit-

Business woes
Employee Bianca Jukes who works at a business in Cadmoor Road said: “This construction is causing a lot of damage to my vehicle as I am forced to drive on dirt roads every day. Sometimes I am ‘pushed’ off the road to allow a big truck to pass,” she said. “Was this project planned before it was implemented?” Resident Warren Brauns, who is also angered with the way the project is handled, said he was almost in a head-on collision because the “flag man” directed traffic at the construction site incorrectly. “These men and women directing traffic are not trained to do this job. All they need is a simple stopand-go procedure instead of confusing everyone.” McReynolds and other residents say they understand the importance of the construction project and know it has to be implemented however, they would like proper communication from the management team as to what is going on. “If we are told in advance which roads are closed and when power and water will be cut we can make alternate arrangements. Right now we are taking it one day at a time and suffering in silence. We need answers and assistance,” said McReynolds. Ward 10 councillor Rick Crouch said that although it is not his ward, he is trying to assist Cadmoor Road residents as best he can and asked for copies of the emails from residents pertaining to their woes. Canine Ehrlichiosis – the forgotten tickbite fever EHRLICHIOSIS is named after Dr Ehrlich who did a lot of seminal parasitology work in the 1800s and early 20th century. This parasite is a bacteria transmitted by feeding ticks to dogs. It can occur concurrently with biliary, or Babesiosis, the better-known and more common form of tick fever. However, Ehrlichiosis is very different. Infection follows three phases: 1) Acute phase – first 1-2 weeks after infection – lethargy, depression,
fevers, and lack of appetite. This is very non-specific and dogs sometimes self-cure, while others enter the next, silent phase: 2) Subclinical phase – can last up to six months. No clinical signs, but on blood count, some cell counts change as the parasite hides in the bone marrow, slowly dividing and stimulating the immune system while evading its protective response. 3) Chronic phase – when the bone marrow is damaged beyond repair and runs out of stores of stem cells to
make new red, white and clotting blood cells, the patient starts to show the clinical signs of these deficiencies. The most common presentations are: bleeding from the nose or blood spots under the skin, chronic, recurring infections, particularly respiratory, muscle wasting due to kidney failure and severe weakness due to anaemia (lack of red blood cells). A four-week course of a particular antibiotic can cure almost all acute and most subclinical cases (if you for-
tuitously detect a subclinical case). Chronic cases have a 75% mortality rate. Expensive bone marrow stimulant injections and a lot of luck and supportive care might restart a damaged bone marrow – at a cost of more than R15,000 – but it’s best avoided. Speak to your vets now about preventing diseases like Ehrlichiosis with a Preventic Collar and Advantix or Certifect, rather than wailing, tearing of clothes and gnashing of teeth when it’s too late. - Dr Anthony Zambelli
Fighting crime in Botha’s Hill >> Residents aim to take back their streets
es to form the Botha’s Hill Patrollers in an effort to fight crime head on in the area. According to Steven King of SACCW and Secure Link, the patrollers were formed out of a need to combat the spiralling crime rates in the area.
“There has been a steady increase in house break-ins, and robberies in Benares and Patna Roads. Instead of sitting back and complaining about it, residents decided to take action,” he said. Secure Link, SA Community Crime Watch and concerned residents met in the interests of working together to secure the neighbourhood in whatever way necessary. “Discussions soon led to a 24 hour patrol with the assistance of Secure Link. We have also set up community Whatsapp groups in Botha’s Hill which is used to notify residents of any suspicious activity or incidents of crime,” said King. “With the street patrols we want to create visible policing in the area. “The main objective of the patrols is to assist the police in patrolling the area and to create greater visibility making sure the
streets are clean and calm.” King said the patrollers aim to assistwheretheycanandsaid that they are in no way replacing the police, they are merely supplementing them. He said that if there is a an incident, resident’s first call should be to the authorities, however, the street patrols will be in the area searching for the criminals. The Botha’s Hill Patrollers currently comprise of 20 members on the patrol group under leadership of Eugene Chetty and Marius Ihlenfeldt, but they are appealing for more residents to join. “We would like to request all Botha’s Hill residents to join in our efforts to fight crime. “The more residents we have in our team, the more area we can cover at once,” they said. All interested residents who would like to form part of the patrols can contact Steven King on 082 820 4017.
criminals,” he said. Lyle said that HPNW approached the community and tackled the problem head on. Once the HPNW A task team had secured the area, the 40 strong anti-trash team spent an initialthreehoursclearingtrash-ahaul of 140 bags was removed. Since then the bag count has continued to climb and is currently at 1100 bags. “With a noted increase in trash, suspected to be made worse by numerous construction crews in the area, HPNW organised a special blitz in August, over and above their weekly mini cleanups. Vice chair Rory Jarrett and his team of Bongi Hlengwa, Musa Mngadi and Jerome Jama committed to a full day trackside.
Theyclearedsome55bagsfromthe railreservebetweenInandaandStonewall Bridges,” he said. “It’s is arguable that Hillcrest Park in the heart of Hillcrest boasts a unique and rare attraction; the Springside Conservancy plus 3.8km of rail reserve demarcated a DMOSS conservation area through which another unique attraction passes regularly, the Umgeni Steam Rail.” Shaun Lyle, added that resident members of HPNW are extremely passionate about this heritage and, under their now famous ‘broken window approach’, work tirelessly to not only secure the area, but also assist in conservation initiatives under guidance of George Victor, chairman of the Conservancy.
Bongi Hlengwa, Musa Mngadi and Jerome Jama committed to keeping the railway clean and tidy.

ROWING up Bruce Leslie dreamt of travelling around Africa so when renowned adventurer Kingsley Holgate offered him a job, he packed his bags and never looked back. Thirteen years later and Leslie has been stabbed three times, shared meals and drinks with child soldiers from all over Africa and contracted malaria several times, but says he wouldn’t have it any other way. The 33-year-old Shongweni man is a photographer on Holgate’s team. He met the explorer in 2002 during a wedding at Stonehaven Castle in Shongweni, the family owned wedding venue. “It was a case of being at the wrong place at the wrong time.” During the wedding Leslie’s sister approachedHolgateandtoldhimthat
Leslie would be perfect for his team. “He called me for an interview and it was the best interview of my life, because when I was young I dreamt of travelling Africa,” he said. Leslie can still remember his first expedition. “Holgate gave me the keys to the LandRoverandIwentonmyfirsttrip, the Great Explorers [expedition].” The team have navigated all over Africa, even to the most remote villages, handingoutmosquitonetsto mothers and children. “The Outside Edge Expedition is one of my favourites.” Leslie said he couldn’t imagine himself doing anything else. “It’s an adventurer’s dream to work with Kingley Holgate. I love the priceless afternoon sunsets and sitting around the fire sharing meals and drinks with child soldiers. “I have been stabbed three times,
been held at gunpoint and had malariaseveraltimes, butIwouldstill go back out there because when you see the mothers and little children suffering with malaria, you realise they are fighting something that we can combat,” said Leslie. Leslie has been back in South Africa for eight days and is already preparing for his next trip. “I am leaving at the end of the month. We are going on the Zambezi River on another leg on the Ma Robert — our boat that we use to get across rivers,” he said. Leslie said he was looking forward to going back to rural schools around Africa. “We educate children about rhinos through the Kingsley Holgate Project Rhino. HE RetroBeats, a vocal ensemble from Thomas More College received first place in an acapella singing competition at St. Conrad’s College in Klerksdorp recently. The competition was named “In the Spirit of Pitch Perfect”. Participating groups had to develop a choreographed song medley of between eight and 14 minutes in which all sound used in the item was voice or body generated. The songs chosen by each participating group had to fall into one of five different categories. The RetroBeats chose the ‘Hollywood and Broadway’ category and their set list included the songs: Holding Out for a Hero, We Built This City, Seasons of Love and Hit Me
group in Thomas More College since January 2013, currently consists of 11 members from grades nine to11 and is managed by two staff members. They put many long hours during term time as well as school holidays into preparing for this competition. The vocal arrangements in their song medley were developed by the group members themselves. The acapella competition was judged by three very experienced adjudicators: Yvonne van Deventer, Juan Enslen and Brian Kenneth. They assessed the vocal performance, choreography and uniform of each group. In every category of assessment RetroBeats scored above 85 per cent and received very complimentary comments from each of the judges.

N 1998, my newly single mother and four of her children moved into our new home in Port Dunford, which came as a huge shock for “township kids” who grew up in places like eSikhawini and uMlazi. The place was quite rural back then and we didn’t have television until late 1998; even then, it was a black-and-white one with a screen the size of a large cellphone. The place wasn’t so bad, I mean, we had wide open spaces and a driveway as long as some suburban streets. We used to have clear views of the green planes around us as far as the eye can see save for some gumtree forests here and there. Mother tried her best to look after us and we were happy. There is one thing I can single out that aided in my missing the township life over the three years we lived there - flushing toilets. One seldom considers the importance of having a

Affirmative action missed our poop flushing toilet in the house. Yes, sure it is quite imperative for hygiene purposes, but there is also the dignity part. Don’t get me wrong, not that I was unhappy with the pit loo in the backyard, I had forgotten any better then and at eight I was fairly satisfied with the situation. We had a pit latrine a coupleofdozenmetresfromthe“bedroom house” (there was also a lounge and a separate kitchen house). Anyway, the toilet had four rickety walls and a door that was too small for the frame so it never really closed. For those who have never used one, a pit latrine consists of a hole whereyourexcrementdropstobedevoured by all manner of microbes and creepy crawlies, the way nature intended. One of the bugs that would occasionally find its way in there was a rather loud bumblebee, the sound of which would dissuade me from blocking the stinger’s only way out

Let’s let that sink in a bit. KZN Cogta’s Nomusa Dube-Ncube launched an attack on municipalities still implementing the bucket system in KZN after the president set a deadline of September 2014 during his State of the NationAddressinJune. Onesuchmunicipality was uMhlathuze, which initially denied having any records of the system in its jurisdiction, but was later left with egg on its face when a visit from Cogta representatives found a different story. The system was in full swing in at least 83 households in Mandlazini just outside Richards Bay. In an effort to meet the presidential deadline, these households will be provided with pit latrines, an “upgrade”

Until then, close to R100 000 will be used to fix an issue that never should have been in the first place. I find it sad that it took the president setting this deadline before something was done. Yes, it looks like I have written a column about poop and pit toilets, but I am trying to highlight the plight of some people from a perspective I actually understand. From personal experienceIcantellyouthatpittoilets are, well, crap, because they are a direct attack on human dignity. They need to be done away with a massive sense of urgency.
Ruling party and banana republics THANKS to the ANC and the education departments, South Africa has once again been ranked last on the quality of its mathematics and science education in the WorldEconomicForumGlobalCompetitiveness Report 2014-2015. South Africa was ranked 144th out of 144 countries when looking at the quality of mathematics and science education. The country was ranked at 140 out of 144 countries when it came to the quality of the education system. The results showed that South African
business leaders rated the local mathematics and science education quality as the worst in the world. Only Egypt, Angola, Yemen and Libya ranked slightly lower. With little or no effort you have managed to provide yourselves with untold wealth at the expense of the country and have now successfully managed to deprive the youth of a decent education and future. The country is a shambles. Municipalities are going bankrupt, hos-
pitals are in a disastrous state, Telkom and Eskom are broke and are in turmoil. SAA is constantly being bailed out and SABC and e-Tags are nightmares that have gone wrong,to name a few of your achievements. You, the voters are part of this problem too for allowing them to continue unabated for the past 20 years. Keep up the good work - it won’t be long before we are a fully fledged banana republic. I hope you are proud of yourselves. No Hope

Welcome to Warwick Estate Warwick Estate is a family-owned and run winery. Managing director Michael Ratcliffe is the third generation family member to oversee this high quality boutique operation. From 1771 till 1902, Warwick was known as the farm ‘De Goede Sukses’. After the Anglo Boer war ended in 1902, Colonel William Alexander Gordon, commanding officer of the Warwickshire regiment bought the historic farm. He renamed it ‘Warwick’ as a tribute to his regiment. Stan Ratcliffe purchased Warwick on 1 April 1964 after an extensive search for the best ‘terroir’ in the Cape. Together with his wife Norma, they soon realised the potential of the extraordinary property and began planting Cabernet Sauvignon.
First Lady Cabernet The wine has a deep and intense ruby red colour. The bouquet reveals red berries, sweet black currants, and a pleasant herbal character complemented by sweet vanilla and chocolate oak. The smooth round tannins make this wine easy to drink while retaining good structure. Enjoy this wine with steak, roast free range chicken or crusty based smoked mozzarella and caramelised onion pizza.

THE PEUGEOT 308 and 308 SW have seen commercial success with 146 000 units ordered by the end of August. Following this excellent performance, the 308 range welcomes two dynamic new versions and on both Hatchback and SW body styles. Behind the wheel of these new versions, whether the GT 205 or GT 180 fitted with the 1.6-litre THP 205 Stop &Start six-speed manual and the 2.0litre BlueHDi 180 EAT6 engines respectively, drivers will appreciate the remarkable performance of these vehicles. The 308 GT’s front end now houses the lion in the grille with three horizontal blades on either side of the emblem and LED lighting used throughout. From behind, the 308 GT is striking for its posture as the GT signature is integrated in the grill, the tailgate and the front wheel panels. The range of colours for the 308 GT include the new Magnetic Blue. To deliver maximum enjoyment, the GT makes the most of a chassis with specific settings and high performance engines. The Kia Picanto is awesome and amplified THE second-generation Kia Picanto has been turning heads since making its global premiere at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show and local market introduction in 2011. Three years later, the Picanto remains one of the most striking and comprehensively equipped vehicles in its segment. In South Africa, the Picanto took top honours in the People's Wheels Awards for three years in a row (2011, 2012 and 2013), has won numerous 'Best Buy' awards from major publications, and was elected a finalist in the 2012 WesBank/SAGMJ Car of the Year competition. While the two-model Picanto lineup remains unchanged, enhancements to the exterior endows it with a sportier face thanks to a revised 'tiger nose' grille and a restyled front bumper. The Picanto's sculpted side profile and uncluttered rear styling remainsunchanged.The1.0LXships with 14-inch steel wheels with full wheel covers, while the 1.2 EX fea-

tures sporty 14-inch alloys. Two of Kia Motor Corporation's efficient Kappa engines do duty in the Picanto, starting with three-cylinder, 998 cc unit producing 51 kW and 94 Nm of torque in the 1.0 LX. A four-cylinder, 1 248 cc engine is used in the 1.2 EX, producing 65 kW and 120 Nm of torque. Both engines are mated to a five-speed manual transmission, but a four-speed automatic transmission is available as an option. Features available on both models include manual air-conditioning, an under-floor trunk storage box, retractable dual cup holders and sun visors with vanity mirrors, as well as AUX/iPod/USB connections for the radio CD player with MP3 compatibility (the EX also sports steering wheel mounted controls and hands-free Bluetooth®.
WITH more South Africans taking up road or trail biking, the safe and correct transportation of a bicycle is an important topic, believes Les Mc Master, chairman of the Motor Industry Workshop Association (MIWA). “Cyclists or mountain bikers often ride in groups and this could mean transporting one or more bicycles to a designated meeting spot. While there are lots of ways to transport bikes, it’s important that they are secure and safe before hitting the road, not only for safety but for other motorists too,” he says. He says it’s important to be aware of the road rules and associated legal obligations. “Officials are well within their right to pull you over if your vehicle doesn’t comply with road rules pertaining to transporting a bike. For example, your lights and number plate can’t be obscured by bikes — all of your lights need to be clearly visible and your number plate readable. Strictly they must be able to be seen from various directions, not just directly from the back.” He adds that your view must not obscured in any way, including looking through the rear-view mirror out of the back of the vehicle.

Unless you have a large boot, the likelihood of fitting a bicycle in the boot is minimal and there’s a good chance you’ll damage the paint work or boot or bicycle trying to get it in. Rather opt for a roof rack or tow-bar mounting
“Logically, but also legally, you can’t have an ‘unsafe load’ — that is overload the car, or fail to secure the bikes so that they could come loose, fall off or destabilise the car. “You also can’t load bikes onto the vehicle so they stick out, which could cause an accident involving vehicles, property or pedestrians.” You also cannot exceed the maximum weight-bearing load for bike-carrying equipment, roof bars, tow bars, top or

brand’s expertise to achieve a remarkable power to weight ratio of just 5.85kg/hp for the petrol 308 GT. Acceleration from 0 to 100km/h, takes the petrol 308 GT just 7,5 seconds. The four-cylinder 1.6-litre THP 205 Stop&Start engine is specified with a sixspeed manual gearbox to make the most of its 285Nm of torque, available between 1 750 and 4 500rpm. This diesel engine is coupled to an EAT6 automatic gearbox. It uses Quickshift technology for fast gear changes, as well as the ability to down-shift automatically to the speed required rather than in sequential order. Furthermore, its efficiency is almost the same as for a manual gearbox due to reduced internal friction and the use of torque converters applied whenever needed to avoid transmission slip. Performance of this level demands an effective braking system and this is provided by a Bosch 9CE central unit distributing the braking effort between the four discs. At the front, the 330mm diameter and 30mm thick discs are gripped by floating calipers with 60mm pistons. At the rear, the discs are 268mm diameter on 308 GT and 290 mm on 308 GT SW. Both engines types have switchable ESP as standard.
rear racks, and the load for your type of vehicle as specified by the manufacturers. This load value should be in your vehicle manual. The safe roof carrying weight is nearly always specified, as is the tow bar load weight (known as the nose weight rating). “When considering what type of carrier to use, make sure the carrier makes sense with your vehicle. It should be quick and easy to set up and not interfere with your vehicle’s functionality (or damage the paint work) in any way. “For example, unless you have a large boot, the likelihood of fitting a bicycle in the boot is minimal and there’s a good chance you’ll damage the paint work or boot or bicycle trying to get it in. Rather opt for a roof rack or tow-bar mounting.” Mc Master says it’s important to check and tighten fixtures, straps, etc, of the carrierregularlyduringyourjourney, especially before you set off. “It’s wise to check the manufacturer’s instructions and follow them in terms of fitting, position, tightness, and controls.” “With the weather warming up it is a great time to load up the bikes and head out for a morning on a trail or to meet with friends for a road ride. “So take the time to secure the bikes properly and know that you are taking your safety and that of other road users seriously.” - Supplied

Local boys shine in England >> Kloof High School cricket team excel in overseas tour

FEVER REPORTER
T
HE 2014 cricket season got off to an exciting start for 14 Kloof High cricketers and their coaches when they flew to South-East England in the Essex region for a tour. This was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the squad who were hosted by Davenant Foundation School, Kloof’s partner school in England. The itinerary included five matches in 12 days as well as sight-seeing and, in the spirit of ‘giving back”, assisting with the running of a primary school’s sports day as well as hosting a coaching clinic at a local school. The boys found the bowling and fielding particularly challenging and weren’t able to secure a win in the first fixture. However, by the end of the match it was clear that the team had begun to adjust to the English playing conditions. The second fixture was unique in that the team played a touring Australian team, visiting from King’s School, Sydney. In spite of the sticky wicket from recent rain, the boys looked like a different team from
the first fixture. Having scored 149 all out, Kloof bowled out King’s School for 110 runs to secure a memorable victory. The third fixture would be the last as the final two were washed out. This match was against the county school champions, Ilford Grammar School. The Kloof boys managed to restrict the opposition to 134-3 in their 30 overs. Captain Kameeran Naicker led from the front to lead the team to win by four wickets with five balls to spare. All the younger, more inexperienced players had featured in this match and their fine performance bodes well for the future of cricket at Kloof. Kloof High School believes that experiences such as this are of immeasurable benefit. The school has seen three overseas cricket tours depart in the past seven years and this is testament to the forward-thinking and ingenuity of the school’s management and the immense support that it shows towards co-curricular at the school. All the boys came home with more experience, great memories and a sense of team spirit that will carry forward into the upcoming season.
