Cornè Broodryk of the Kloof Community Policing Forum said that trucks should have never been allowed on Fields Hill. “There are many calls for trucks to be banned yet pleas fall on deaf ears; who will be held accountable now?” Meanwhile, MEC for the Depart-

Sterilisation of equipment Last week I wrote about the use of sterile gloves and touched on other surgical attire. There is a cost associated with their use, but they represent best and in my opinion, MINIMUM medical practice. A box of sterile gloves costs about R500 for 50 – except in my case. Unfortunately like some doctors I am allergic to latex and must fork out R1800 for a box on nitrile sterile gloves! This means clients have to pick up that bill - just as well I rarely

operate, being a specialist physician! When we DO go into theatre, how are gowns sterilised? Why wear gowns? In a recent (2009) article assessing dispersal of bacteria in theatres, Iskandar explained that the highest dispersal of bacteria into the air occurred when doctors and nursing staff were moving about and wearing their street clothes. Thisiswhyaseparate, closedtheatre is required and theatre garb is necessary. It was also shown that

this dispersal was significantly decreased by wearing cap, gown and gloves, as well as a mask that covers the nose (the main source of bacteria, particularly the nasty MRSA). Instruments and surgical garb are best packed into a double layer ofsurgicalpaperwhichhassterilisation “markers” in the pack to PROVE sterilisation was complete. The old cloth drape packs are NOT adequate as even steam sterilisation does not occur throughout

and they become tatty. Drapes must be discarded from surgical use once their material-specific lifespan is reached. Instrument “packs” or individually “steripacked” instruments are put into an autoclave, which sterilises instruments through heat (132°C) and at about 100KPa atmospheric pressure. Marks on or in the packs change colour when the process is complete. Packs are sterile for three to six months, depending on technique.

Kloof water pipe on track FEVER REPORTER

D

UE to the support and cooperation of the community, the new inlet pipe that transfers water from the main line to the Jerome Drive Reservoir in Kloof is well on track for completion before year end. Spokesman for eThekwini Water and Sanitation (EWS), Andrew Copley, said that between 60 and 70 per cent of the work on the pipeline replacement had alreadybeencompleted.Construction began in June and the new pipeline is expected to be commissioned in December this year. The contractor will leave site in January 2014 in time for the beginning of the new school year. The new pipe – which is 300mm in diameter and covers a stretch measuring 1,5 kilometres – has crossed the M13 from Old Main

Road in front of Standard Bank in Village Road. It continues down St Mary’s Road past the St Mary’s Girls School and then takes a left turn into Edgecliff Road before passing through a servitude into Jerome Place and ending in the Jerome Drive Reservoir complex. At the beginning of the year, EWS decided to lay a completely new pipe as continual repairs wouldnotonlybecostlybutcause considerable inconvenience. Replacement of aging water infrastructure is also imperative to minimise leaks and conserve Durban’s precious water resources. Copley said that, given the fact that this is a busy thoroughfare traversed by up to 1 000 cars each day, the logistics surrounding the project had been considerable. To minimise inconvenience to

all affected and especially to parents, pupils and staff at St Mary’s Girls School, it had been decided that no work would be done on the new pipeline before 8am. Detours are put in place throughout thedaytoensurethattrafficflows continually. “Everything has been running smoothly. The contractor has been working closely with the community, keeping everyone updated on the progress of the projectandfutureplans,”hesaid. “Effective traffic plans have helped and the parents of children attending the school are kept informed before any work commences. They have been able to avoid areas where we are working as a whole. We were extremely pleased to have been commended by the school for the work we have been doing.”

K9 unit gets a boost >> Highway SPAR stores donate R50 000 towards community safety KALISHA NAICKER

S

PAR, well known for working closely with the people in the communities in which it operates, has pulled out all the stops and donated R50 000 towards sustaining the Shongweni K9 unit. The dog unit, which covers the entire Pinetown Cluster including eight police stations: Pinetown, Westville, Hillcrest, Inchanga, KwaDabeka, Mpumalanga, Msindusi and Hammarsdale, is quickly making a name for themselves, with arrests and conviction of criminals. Gary Tomlinson of SPAR KZN said that the Highway stores got together and decided to contribute to this worthy organisation. “The K9 unit goes beyond the call of duty time and again ensuring the community is free of crime,” he explained. “Overtheirperiodofexistencethey havemadecountlessarrestsandwere

not afraid to tackle crime head on.” Tomlinson said that as a community store SPAR decided to donate towards the K9 unit and assist in sustaining the unit as well as play their part in keeping the community safe. Brian Jones, founder of SA CAN and SA Guardians and Community Safety NPC said that although the SA Guardians organisation has not yet held an official launch, they will be using this donation for the K9 Unit without any administration charges. “The Guardians are a non-profit organisation, registered as a security organisation that will provide direct support to the SAPS, security companies, neighbourhood watches, CPF’s, crisis centres, medical organisations and all other stakeholders in community policing. “This initiative will operate with credibility, integrity, independence and neutrality,” said Jones. He said that the donation will be administered by the Guardians to en-

sure that proper protocol is followed and the process remains balanced. “ItwillbeusedtosupporttheShongweni K9 Unit and the broader community in various ways; by helping to build personal relationships between unit members and the community, as well as raising its profile and productivity and by extension, all SAPS members within the Highway area.” In addition, Jones said the donation will increase the frequency of awareness days, where the public can meet Spar management and K9 unit members, forming a communal round table of support. The aim is also to help with food and additional support to the service dogs. The Guardians are in consultation with SAPS in planning the next step and have requested that CPF management be embraced. “An aware community is a safe community. I would like to thank SPAR for their donation towards this cause,” he added.

EDITORIAL COMMENT

When the ‘suspect’ becomes the victim WHEN 23 people tragically die in one accident, it’s natural to point fingers and want justice. At the moment most fingers are pointing Swaziland national Sanele Goodness May. The 23year-old driver faces 23 murder charges and seems to be cracking at the seams under tons of pressure from society. However, some believe that May is also a victim in this incident. Social media has been abuzz with messages for and against May. The Sanele May Support Group Facebook page already has over 2000 people who share a common thought - May is a victim as well. While a lot of May’s supporters sent their messages of condolences to the families of those who died in the accident, they say the driver should not be persecuted before knowing the full story. It’s a typical tale of human compassion as the accident still has drivers, locals and commuters on edge. Tell us what you think - email valene.govender@witness.co.za. E should hang on its words; we should use it as our premier information source; we should laugh and cry with it; we should see and hear the country’s new talent blossoming through it; we should laud it; we don’t do any of these things. It is the tottering SA Broadcasting Corporation about which I write – that wonderful example of a monumental cock-up At a Press briefing last week, SABC Group CEO, Lulama Mokhobo, denied that close to a billion in TV licence fees has gone missing. On the other hand, the Auditor-General’s audit opinion in the SABC’s annual report is that he “…was unable to obtain sufficient

According to the Auditor-General, TerrenceNombembe,theSABC’s2012/13annual report shows some serious financial maladministration, such as R1.58 billion in undocumented expenditure; R106.3 million

And all this from our public broadcaster which has staggered drunkenly down the road to ruin since KZN’s Dr Ben Ngubane packed his bags and left the degenerating rollercoaster The SABC perpetual board, management and financial crises increasingly irritate South Africans, who for many years have been loyal customers of the public broadcaster. THE Fields Hill accident has gone viral. Everytime I receive a link to one of those videos, the blood drains from my face. Yes it is a tragic accident that has every talking, but do we have to circulate the footage like it’s the latest music video. At the end of the day 23 people died and it is a grim horrible sight. But no. The government cannot bear the thought of an independent and profitable public broadcaster that would show the country, warts and all, with the intent of making this a better country for all. Instead they pack the place with cadres who have little interest in promoting truth or talent. The SABC belongs to all of South Africa. In our society, blame is sometimes more important than responsibility. Every time we havealossoflifeonourroads, blameisthrown from one side to the next until someone ‘thinks’ they’ve won. When it comes to Fields Hill, the stats are in, the probes are done, a thesis has been writtenandstillnothinghaschanged. Thisisunacceptable! The MEC must find a solution or move aside. The law clearly states that a life holds the highestvalueandcannotbetakenoverpossessions, property or money, yet our Toll Plazas are allowed to rack in billions each month in the face of a rising death toll. Fields Hill holds more than 50% of the deaths on the M13. This cannot be allowed to fall on deaf ears any longer. It is now the responsibility of the public to insist on results and make our public servants take responsibility. Corne’ Broodryk Kloof Community Police Forum

LOOF High School has a reputation for academic excellence. In 2012 the school achieved a 100 per cent pass rate in the National Senior Certificate examinations and the vast majority of pupils attained bachelor passes, enablingthemtostudyattertiary institutions. But, there is more to studying at Kloof High than academic achievement. The school’s disciplined and nurturing environment promotes a well-rounded education and encourages every pupil to accept the Kloof High challenge, which is- “To be the best that I can be”. “This challenge extends to the school and its staff, as well as the pupils,” said principal Dawn Lefort. “We’re continually challenging ourselves as an institution to remain relevant to the needs of our community and to reach out to the less fortunate.” While keeping sporting and

academics a number one priority, Kloof High also engages in a number of social responsibility activity, enabling pupils to help the less fortunate. Lefort said, “We forged strong ties with a local secondary school, Westmead Secondary,

The KHS Learning Centre supports pupils after school hours, offering one-on-one tuition where necessary. This is a free service to parents. Pupils can choose from more than 20 sports, including rock-climbing, adventure racing and girls’ soccer. Spring into the Season with Hillcrest Corner

Welcome to Mt Vernon The name Mt Vernon originates from two sources: it is the name of George Washington's home which overlooks the Potomac River, in Virginia, USA and Vernon is also the middle name which has been given to almost every male member of the Hooper family for many generations in memory of Vernon Edward Hooper - a revered patriarch who died in Durban in 1954. The vineyards, situated in Klapmuts, have a warmer climate but receive a cooling breeze from the south on many hot summer days. It is a good area for shiraz and cabernet sauvignon. The chardonnay grapes have also been used in award winning wines. Aspects of the vineyards vary but are generally northerly and west facing.

Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 The wine is 100 percent cabernet sauvignon and is opaque with purple rim.Ithasarich, ripe, darkberryfruited nose. This wine has delightful floral spray in the background where dark rose features strongly. Deep, full mouth with layers of ripe, berry fruit flavours. In the sweet fruited mouth a strong strawberry develops while ripe red cherry comes to the fore with some time. Sweet vanilla and cinnamon gather at the edges. Firm but suppletanninsaddgoodgriptoallthe ripe fruited characters. This wine can be paired with a wide choice of foods.

Chardonnay 2010 This 100 percent chardonnay - single vineyard wine - appealingly crisp with titillating hints of lemon. Fermented in French oak barrels, it has a gentle wood character which allows the wine to display abundant fresh fruit on the palate. This wine can be enjoyedonitsownorwithoysters, fish and chicken.

Ascending to greater heights KALISHA NAICKER

kalisha@witness.co.za

A VERY excited and slightly apprehensive 15year-old Dale Rosser flew from OR Tambo airport to Central Saanich, Canada as part of the South African Team participating in the International Federation of Sport Climbing World Youth Sport Climbing Championships recently. Rosser started his climbing career in Grade eight at Kloof High School when he finished the year in third place in KZN under 15 section. The following year he improved to be placed first in KwaZulu-Natal and fifth in South Africa’s under 15 age catergory.

This year Rosser had to compete in the under 17 section which has been difficult as he’s one of the youngest climbers in his section. In spite of this, Rosser was placed third in KwaZulu-Natal in under 17 and was successful at theSouthAfricantrials,whereheachievedsecondplaceinSAunder17andwaschosentorepresent South Africa in Canada The South African team faced formidable opponentswhowerefarmoreexperiencedandso were not placed in Canada. However, they have returned to South Africa ready to climb to far greater heights using the invaluable experience they received overseas.

HE KwaZulu-Natal Adventure Racing Championships 2013 took place at Non Stop Adventure Centre at Baynesfield on Saturday 7 September. The teams had to take part in a number of different activities including cycling, orienteering, hiking, abseiling, rock climbing, obstacle crossing, paintball shooting, pioneering, raft building and rafting

on a dam. During the race the teams had to repair their own bicycles, find their own routes by using compasses and a map, prepare and carry their own meals and use different problem-solving techniques to overcome all the challenges. Teams consist of four members of which one member must be of the opposite sex. Teams have to complete all the activities as a team and are never allowed to be more than 50 metres apart during the race.
