Roadside rescue
>> Pup sold for R50 on the roadside
It’s a happy ending for Bobbi.
KALISHA NAICKER
T
ODAY, Bobbi looks like a normal puppy, but just a week ago she was nearly dumped in a trash can by a breeder. The pup's life nearly ended on the side of the road along Fields Hill near Kloof, where a resident saysshestoppedtocheckoutamansellingpuppies for R50. "I noticed a man walking along the side of the road holding out a pup in the pouring rain. My heart just melted as I could not stand the sight of the animal being tortured in that way,” saidtheresidentwhodidnotwanttobenamed. “Fighting all my common sense which told me to not pull over, I did. And there were tiny black eyes, just crying out for love.” The resident said the seller deemed the Jack Russell and Chihuahua mix puppy unsellable because she was so tiny. “I paid him R50 for the pup and drove him straight to the nearest vet I could find,” she said. “He had a full check-up and I was told that she was nearly 3 weeks old.” The resident said the vet also told her that the animal would not have survived a few more days in his condition as she was starving and exposed to the elements. However Bobbi is now a healthy and happy puppywithalovinghome.Yetnotallstoriesend this way, and many animals end up dead or abandoned. According to Hillcrest SAPS communications officer Lieutenant France Mkhize, puppy nabbing is rife and many criminals try to make a quick buck from these animals. He said that although animal lovers are temptedtobuythesepupsoffthestreetcorners, they should immediately contact the police, as
it is illegal to sell or buy pups from a roadside vendor.“Thisisaformofanimalcrueltyandthe perpetrators could be charged. The animals could also be severely ill and once it is taken home, it could die,” he added. “It is best to first contact the authorities and the animal will be taken to the SPCA who will check them thoroughly and then offer them for adoption.” To report illegal trade of animals contact, SAPS on 031 765 9116.

Shunts, Seizures and strange behaviours A railway shunt is a portion of track allowingthedrivertomoveacarriagealongside the main track, permitting the trains to pass it by. A portosystemic shunt is a bloodvesselinapet’sabdomenthatdoes exactlythesamething–withseriousconsequences. When the pup or kitten is just a foetus in the womb, blood comes to it from its mother, and a shunt develops dumping the nutrient-rich blood in front of the liver, completely bypassing it. The
pup doesn’t need its liver to do much, because it isn’t eating as a foetus. As soon as it is born, the umbilical cord snaps, cutting off blood to this shunt, the “ductus venosus”. The pup suckles, and the nutrient-rich blood from the guts now perfuses the liver, fuelling its growth. End of story…..forsomeanimals.Incertainindividuals – like Burmese cats, Yorkies, Dachsies, Wolfhounds, German Shepherds, older Mini Schnauzer, and some other breeds –
shunts can persist. Now blood from the bowels, full of nutrients, waste products like ammonia and bacterial toxins – bypasses the liver and enters the bloodstream, where it affects the brain. Some dogs are just depressed or overly excitable; others can develop profound sedation, come or seizures, typically within hours of a meal. Very protein-rich meals can cause more serious symptoms. The condition is diagnosed on the ba-
sis of clinical exam & history; blood tests; an ultrasound done by a specialist (it’s very challenging) and in some instance, an angiogram. Most shunts can be surgically closed, with only 10-13% complication rate. When complications occur, they are very serious and thus these patients require a skilled team to care for them for the first 48 hours. Patient selection for surgery is critical. A successful procedure is considered curative for life.
Testers bust for fraud
>> Bribes at centre that passed “death-truck” JONATHAN ERASMUS
V
EHICLE examiners who worked at the testing station that passed the truck that killed 24 people in the Field’s Hill tragedy were arrested and have been charged with fraud in a sting operation last week Tuesday. Phoenix Testing Station owner Sudesh Ramdas, who owns several other testing stations and has interests in the transport sector, confirmed his station passed the truck driven by Sanele May. However, he said at the time of the accident that they had not seen the vehicle for 12 months. Jody Pillay, deputy chief of police for the National Traffic Anti-Corruption Unit, said the arrest was the culmination of a six-month investigation. “Through undercover operatives
Field’s Hill death-truck case continues in February KALISHA NAICKER SWAZI national Sanele Goodness May will remain in Westville Prison as his case has been adjourned to February 25 for further investigation. The 23-year-old faces 24 counts of murder after a truck he was driving slammed into four taxis and a car in Pinetown in September. He was denied bail after the court deemed him a flight risk. May’s lawyer, professor Lindokuhle Mdletshe, said the defence is planning on presenting new evidence for another bail application, but did not disclose when this will happen. Magistrate Wendolyn Robinson said May had no physical ties to

the country and the court will continue to see him as a flight risk. May remains in custody until his next court appearance. Meanwhile, messages of support and encouragement still continue to pour in on the Facebook Sanele May Supporters Group. SupporterKhanyieNzama, writing on the group’s page, said: “We will always be there for you Sanele as everyone deserves a second chance.” Another supporter, Liesel Wichmann Schirmer, said: “We have to keep the faith and know that God does things in His own time. We must not become despondent - I know it is easier said than done but don’t ever stop hoping.”
we sent defective vehicles into the centre, which they passed after the suspects were paid off. A third staff member arrested was, we believe, the runner and he would hand over the money to the examiner,” said Pillay. He said the investigation is the third in KZN, with arrests on North Coast Road and Melmoth. “We will be arresting more people in the coming weeks. We have been tasked by the Ministry of Transport to root out corruption countrywide. “We have arrested a mixture of traffic officers and officials at the testing stations. This is the same testing station that passed the truck that crashed on Field’s Hill, killing 24 people. We will be seeking to have the testing station shut down,” said Pillay. He could not confirm whether the
three suspects were involved in passing the truck that killed two dozen people in September. The truck driven by May could not stop due to alleged brake failure and crashed into several vehicles. May is facing 24 murder charges after his truck ploughed into four minibus taxis and two cars. Ramdas said all three people arrested had been employed at the station for approximately five years. “I would like to suspend them all with no pay if I could. I will talk to the Department of Transport and appeal to them not to shut it down. “We cannot be held responsible for that [Field’s Hill] accident. We had not seen the vehicle for over a year,” said Ramdas. He said he “had no idea” about the alleged fraudulent activity at his centre and that he would run a separate independent investigation.
Community wants ALL trucks banned KALISHA NAICKER ALTHOUGH motorists travelling along Fields Hill say they welcome KZN Transport MEC Willies Mchunu’s announcement that vehicles weighing 16 tons will not be allowed to use Fields Hill, they are still demanding a total truck ban. In the MEC’s speech at provincial legislature last week, Mchunu said that authorities are also looking at adding a weigh bridge to the M13. He said that due to social and economic implications, there will not be a total ban. However, several short term plans have been put in place.
>> Existing carrying capacity of trucks passing through Field’s Hill will be reduced from 25 tons to 16 tons >>16 ton trucks will be restricted from passing through Field’s Hill from 6am to 9am on the eastbound carriageway >> Trucks will be restricted from using the route in both directions from 4pm to 6.30pm >>The compulsory stop at the top of Field’s Hill will be electronically monitored and law enforcement is set to increase. Long-term plans include constructing an extra lane in the easterly direction, concrete barriers along the entire route as well as improving ramps
and intersections. Ward 10 councillor Rick Crouch said although the move is positive, he is still calling for a total ban on trucks. Kloof CPF chairperson Corne Broodryk said that the MEC is “beating around the bush” and that residents need a total ban. “Trucks can use an alternative route and should not be allowed on Field’s Hill.” Kloof resident Brian Brenton echoed the sentiments of many community members spoken to by Hillcrest Fever when he called for a complete ban on heavies, saying: “Let’s act before another tragedy.”
Liquor outlets warned KALISHA NAICKER

HILLCREST police fear that the December holidays could prove a dangerous time for children, when crimes against or involving them usually increase. Hillcrest SAPS communications officer Lieutenant MF Mkhize stated that unsupervised children on holiday spent their time on the streets and in shopping malls where they were vulnerable to predators and gangsters. He said that there are a drastic number of children that go missing and there are several problems that SAPS faces. “There is a huge miscommunication between SAPS and the parents. Parents should be more active in their children’s lives and know the child’s whereabouts and friends,” he said. “We at Hillcrest SAPS appeal to all places of businesses suchasliquoroutletstonotsellliquortounderagechildren. Any individual caught selling liquor or purchasing liquor that is under age would be dealt with severely.” Mkhize said that CAPS will also be clamping down on places of business that do not have a trading licence.

Beaded trophies and smiles
HUNDREDS of parents, volunteers, bursary donors and friends attended the iThemba Academy prize-giving ceremony recently. The foundation phase school - which is almost entirely supported by donations says it is moving from strength to strength. The children recited poems about the seasons and received certificates, book awards and South African original beaded trophies from donors. “The school hopes to have 70 children enrolled next year,” said Gavin Kruger, chief operations officer.

>> Cartoon clip used in rape education KALISHA NAICKER
A
S part of its community outreach, the Jes Foord Foundation (JFF) has launched a 17-second educational cartoon aimed at telling childrenwhatstepstotakeifthey have been raped. One of the individuals who spearheaded the project, Michelle Smith, who is also the foundation’s trauma counsellor, said that the cartoon is linked to the way social media touches lives. “Media has become such a huge part of our society. Everything is a touch phone, tablet, ipad, laptop, ebook etc. We wanted to create a multimedia cartoon animation that will appeal to society.Wewanted to create some-
thing for our youth, which is on their level in terms of cognitive level (level of understanding) and will educate them,” she said. “We want them to know exactly what to do if they have been raped, as well as where to get help,” she said. “There are many times cases are thrown out of court for lack of evidence; if we can educate the youth as to what to do straight after a rape, we can help aid the case process.” Smith said the educational nature of the cartoon will play a role in avoiding problems such as HIV/AIDS, pregnancy and STDs. “We are showing the youth what medication they need to receive and also promote coun-
selling to get them to a point where the trauma is no longer affecting their daily lives,” she added. “Jes has visited a number of schools and played this video and it is amazing how the childrenrespondmoretovisualaids than to talks.” Smith said that shehopestheclipwillencourage the youth to speak out, not be ashamed, and seek the assistance they need. The foundation will also be opening the Jes Foord MultiPurpose Counselling Centre in Mariannhill in March and is welcoming donors. “We will be working with a number of NGOs to provide different forms of counselling such asforHIV. Reason to rejoice THE year started with many talking with some ‘surprise’ that we made it to 2013 (reference to the Mayans believing that the world was going to end in 2012). The year for many has brought tons of successes and good news while others were on the other end of the spectrum. We, at the Fever, were proud to share these emotions with you. The Fever saw many changes this year and we would like to thank you for graciously welcoming us into your homes. Our key focus for 2013 was to focus more on YOU - sharing your experiences and stories with other residents. While there are a number of highlights, personally and as a nation, the death of former president Nelson Mandela has shadowed everything else - and rightfully so. Madiba definitely left us with a legacy worth celebrating and the sad news has united the citizens of this country that he loved so much. Wishing all a wonderful and safe festive season. Lots of love from Team Fever

WOW. Hasn’t this year just flown by. It was just seven months ago that I was appointed to the journalist position of the Hillcrest Fever, and yet I feel like it was just yesterday I drove into the Upper HighwayArea, withpen, writingpadand camera in hand introducing myself to the community. Having said that, there is a lot that I have to be thankful for this year and what better time to do this than the festive season. I would like to thank you, the reader, fortakingthetimeoutofyourbusyschedule every week to pick up a copy of the Hillcrest Fever and read it. Without the readers’positiveaswellasnegativecomments we would not have grown into the dynamic and reputable community newspaper that we are today. Remember that Christmas is a wonderful time of the year to celebrate with family and friends, and it’s also a timely reminder to consider those that are less fortunate. During the course of the year Hillcrest Fever highlighted many nonprofit and non-governmental organisations in the area that are in need of assistance. So, for this festive season, why not see how you can assist them and make a merrier Christmas for all? However you decide to spend the festive season and the holidays, please ensure you and your family are safe, especially on the roads. On behalf of the Hillcrest Fever and myself I would like to wish you a wonderful Christmas, a happy New Year and I’ll see you all in 2014.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year GUY VEZI

IMAGINE yourself perched on a sofa in the comfort of your lounge at home. You are watching a very interesting movie. All of a sudden the camera tilts and the smiling face of the main actor immediately disappears. The words THE END appear on the screen. You feel as if you have just awoken from a reverie. Some people learn valuable lessons from the movies. Others watch them in order toescapefromtheslingsandarrows of this life. They behave like ostriches who bury their heads in the sand in order to escape for just a little while from the harsh realities of this life. In a few days or hours, we’ll bid farewell to a tumultuous 2013 and usher in an unpredictable 2014. 2013 will be like a movie we’ve been watching since the early hours of January when the effects of the fireworks had faded. Some of us just wonder how we made it to this very moment. 2013 was characterised by catastrophe after catastrophe. Many died along
the way. But you and I survived. As to how we survived!, we don’t know. Only the Man above knows. Yet we rarely pause to think about Him and say: “Thank you Lord for bringing me this far. How Great Thou Art!” What a grievous MISTAKE WE MAKE OF TAKING GOD FOR GRANTED. We take for granted the Lord God Almighty, the supreme ruler of the universe who controls the destinies of nations and individuals. We forget that we owe our very existence to Him. Somerefusetopraybecausethey labour under the misconception that praying is nothing but an exercise in futility. They do this because they see how some people who pray suffer. Saddest of all, some don’t pray because they believe they are only protected by the ancestral spirits (Amadlozi). Many of our brothers and sisters, fathers and mothers, sons and daughters, grandsons and granddaughters, had wished to be where we are today, but are no more. Yet you and I are still alive. We take God for granted as if He has an obligation to look after us. Be that as it may, I invite you to join me in expressing our profound gratitudeandappreciationtotheAlmighty for keeping us alive this far. Furthermore and finally, let us join the millions who are saying: “Rest in peaceTataMadiba.Youleftanindelible mark in our lives.” Merry Christmas and a prosperous new year!
War over Primates FIRSTLY I am horrified and appalled by the NSPCA’s allegations against Monkey Helpline and feel them to be totally unjustifiable. Monkey Helpline sometimes worksunderextremesituationsand what they do is beyond exemplary. I don’t see the SPCA coming out to properties at all hours of the day or weekends to rescue monkeys. I had a situation on a Saturday afternoon (no ways would SPCA be contactable) when my dogs attacked a male monkey. He was still alive when I intervened and the only people to come and help were Steve Smit and Carol Booth. It was a miserable rainy, cold day. How could I leave this monkey lying dying in my garden? It’s only until something happens
you realise how much you need people like Steve and Carol. I will be forever grateful. I do not believe for one minute that the rescue monkeys would be kept in unsanitary and shocking conditions. Instead of the NSPCA trying to muzzle (they are GOD, is apparently what their inspectors are believing themselves to be) and bully smaller organisations, they should extend their hand and work with them. After all, the smaller organisations are helping the NSPCA, relievingworkloadandattendingcallouts that the NSPCA generally ignore or don’t have the manpower. Or is the NSPCA cutting off their noses to spite their face? Catherine

EVERY woman knows how good it feels to wear a new bra and panty set for the first time - and who take it for granted. There are some, though, who have only ever worn hand-me-downs or whose underwear has long seen better days. These are women - young and old who live in poverty-stricken conditions and have never experienced putting on fresh, new undergarments. Lisa Smart-Campos - co-founder of the NPO, People Investing in Needs of Communities (PINC) - has set about making it one of her missions to provide anddistributeabrandnewsetofbrasand panties to as many of these disadvantaged women - as well as victims of rape and abuse - as she can. The Bra, Panty and Toiletry Campaign is just one of PINC’s initiatives (as Fever found out in September). Campos has been busy gathering the troops (i.e. corporate sponsors) and anyone else she can find, motivate and inspire to donate to the cause. “We would like corporates to get involved to collect these items within their companies and we will distribute to a list of recipients in December,” Campos explained. “Anydonationwillhelptoupliftwomen who have suffered abuse or rape or are underprivileged in any way. “It is an opportunity to give a little back and offer some self-worth and dignity to these young girls and women.” PINC has been running this Bra and Panty Initiative since 2010 and is urging other like-minded individuals, corporates, church groups and non-profits (like-minded organisations)“Wewantto rally together in full support and raise awareness of these issues within our communities,” Campos added.
“Help girls and women feel like a princess in brand new underwear,” is the plea from Lisa Smart-Campos, co-founder of PINC’s Bra and Panty campaign PINC’s initiative not only provides the underwear but a platform to educate women and the public on various issues regarding abuse, rape and human trafficking. During the rest of the year, however, PINC continues to educate women on breast and cervical cancer and AIDS in relation to sex, abuse and rape. Awareness is also raised amongst women and young girls of their body and teaching them “That they are the only ones who can take control and protect themselves,” Campos explained. “Providing comfortable, dignified undergarments is a small token/gesture related to the bigger picture.” Since its establishment in 2010 the

Bradford shows off his dogmobile with his adoring owner, Pam Naude.

RADFORD is a handsome, regal specimen of a German Shepherd. At 12-and-a-half years old he is entering his twilight years and is the light of his DoggyMom’s life. It’s due to his mom and owner Pam Naude of Glen Anil - that he has been given extra mobility, with the arrival of his very own dogmobile. Bradford suffers from arthritic degeneration of his spine. “He started showing signs of arthritis setting in about two years ago,” Naude says. X-raysconfirmedthis.Withtheright exercise, diet and supplements he continued to have a happy life until helosttheuseofhisbacklegsinOctober. However, Naude knew that “his behaviour hadn’t changed...just his
ability and mobility was impaired.” With the prognosis looking grim, yet not ready to make that final decision regarding Bradford’s life, she startedsurfingthenettolookforother options before considering to euthanase him. Being an experienced and qualified animal behaviourist, Naude knew that he “wasn’t ready to go. Many tried to dissuade me from getting a mobile walker due to his age and condition,” she told Fever. Now she is so glad she listened to her gut instinct. And seeing Bradford move around after being strapped into his walker, one can see why. He is able to move about at a brisk pace, amble up to the gate and sniff the neighbourhood lampposts on a short stroll to catch up on the latest doggy gossip! “I just wanted to give Bradford a bit of mobility since he
has not been able to stand and walk using his back legs,” Naude said. “I had hoped that he would have been abletositinthedogmobilebuthehas always sat with his legs to the side which it doesn’t allow for.” Naude found the dogmobile online at www.dogmobile-online.com - the website for The Dogmobile Company in the United Kingdom. Thecontraptionwasspeciallydesigned to his specifications and made for him. There are front-leg ones, back-leg ones and even for all four legs. They also come in all sizes large or small. “It costs the same made overseas and couriered to SA as if it was made locally,” Naude said - about R6 000 with the exchange rate. “If humans can use wheelchairs once they lose the use of their legs, why not dogs too?” she asked! Naude cites Bradford as the reason why she studied animal behaviour - at Pretoria University with the late Professor Johannes Odendaal going on to train at Onderstepoort. “He was a problem child as a puppy and didn’t want to eat. After all the research and homework that went into finding out why, it motivated me to venture into this avenue. Naude is wellknown and loved by many doggy-owners who have taken their caninestoherPuppySchoolandobedience classes. Further research into various kennels in the Durban area inspired her to open her own doggy-hotel...which is always fully-booked during the holidays. “I tried to take the best of each kennel I saw and incorporate it into my own.” But getting back to the dogmobile. “I just want pet-owners to know that there are other options that give the dogs some kind of independence, even if they are handicapped. Do the research. Don’t give up.”
Gaye and husband, David Conway Nunn live for dancing and competing on the ballroom floor
DEBI BLAKE IT-teacher by day, champion ballroom dancer after hours. This is Gaye Conway Nunn - who with her hubby, David - has been competing and bringing the titles home locally and representing South Africa internationally, for many years. Gaye - an IT teacher at Crawford College, La Lucia - and David - an engineer at an oil refinery - are now spending any spare time they have in the studio, in preparation for the South African Championships which will be taking place at Durban’s ICC from 12 to 14 December. The couple - married in 1994 beganballroomdancinglessonsin 1998...and have never stopped! “It is our passion,” Gaye told Fever, in a break from the classroom. The competitive bug bit after they saw a champion couple practising in the studio where they were taking lessons, and this inspired them to do the same. “We were told, ‘if you work very hard, you can be like them one day.’” The only dancing Gaye had ever done was waltzing with her father. David had done karate since a teenager. And so the many hours of practising and competing began. Competing in ballroom dancing is done according to a points system. So the more competitions one does, the more points are accumulated. The couple began at bronze level. Then progressed through silver and gold to Novice, Pre-Championship and finally Championship level. They have received their KZN colours every year from 2005 onwards and their South African colours from 2007 representing their country at the World Championships in that year and every year since then. They are five-times South African Senior 2 champions (2007, 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2012) and have title number six in their sights in December. The 50-something couple participate overseas in the Senior 2WorldChampionships.Thereareas many as between 140 and 280 couples-andhalfoftheseareeliminated in the first round! Competition is tough and Gaye and David have not yet clinched any titles at international level, but “positions have varied and our best result overseas was beating just over 100 couples,” Gaye explained. “One has to put oneself out there when competing, to learn to take the criticism,” she said, describing the competitiveatmosphereonthedance
floor. They have competed in Belgium, Spain and Finland. In April this year they took part in the World Championships in Majorca followed by the Interprovincials in Cape Town in September. Our champs focus on standard ballroom (waltz, tango, Viennese waltz, slow foxtrot and quickstep). “We are both tall, so feel more comfortable with, and are better at, the swing dances. The waltz and the slow foxtrot are my favourites.” After years of endless lessons and competitions they are both qualified to judge (level 1 only), which they sometimes do at municipal competitions - when time allows. They credit their knowledge and trainingto12yearsoflessonswiththe late Carel and Yulle Nees in Queensburgh and then assistance from former world ten dance champion Frank Knief (of Germany) who - while he lived inCapeTown-wouldflyupfromCape Town to teach them at an advanced level. The couple train five times a week for about two hours a day...more if they can. Gaye says they have become so tuned-in to each other on the floor that they have developed a sixth sense; a non-verbal communication with each other. Any disagreements on the floor? “Whatever squabbles happen - if any - on the dance floor, stay on the dance floor,” Gaye said. It’s an expensive sport: with lessons, competition fees, dresses, shoes and outfits, transport, airfare and accommodation to be paid for. Gaye used to make her own dresses and gowns but now she designs the outfit, buys the fabric andgetsatalenteddressmakertosew the dress. She then adds the intricate beadwork, sequins and other decorations by hand “often while I’m watching ‘So You Think You Can Dance’, my favourite programme!” David wears tailsuits that are specially tailormade so that he can dance and move comfortably. Gaye normally takes two dresses to competitions. Shoes are imported. Although there is no talk of retiring from competitions just yet, when they do the couple will pass on their experience and knowledge by teaching and judging other dancers. They have won the SA Champs title five times in the Senior 2 category and are hoping to be selected for the World Championships in Canada in 2014.

UGAR and spice and everything nice – that’s what the nursery rhyme says about girls! The same applies to Satin Candy, a quaint and classy retail lingerie shop set in a tranquil Kloof garden. Owned by Sandra Thomas, Satin Candy stocks everything from bras to sleepwear, fun underwear and bra accessories. Unlike the often impersonal shopping experience in large department stores, Satin Candy allows every woman to indulge her love for both pretty and practical when it comes to underwear. Four friendly shop assistants – including Thomas – are on hand to help those looking for big, small and in-between sizes. After all, says Thomas: “Shopping for a bra is much like shopping for that perfect pair of shoes – it’s about feeling sexy, feminine, special and, most importantly, being comfortable.” Thomas says there is far more to fitting a bra than there is to slipping on a pair of sexy heels. “The right bra makes you look better in your clothes, feel more confident and even helps with medical
problems such as back pain. “When I first got involved in this business, I was not aware of just how much of a problem it was finding big cup size bras. I am often told that bra shopping is an unpleasant, tearful experience.” “Young girls who are tired of wearing “ugly” bras walk into my shop and are thrilled to find pretty, sexy ones in their sizes.” Thomas said her aim is that every woman should leave Satin Candy feeling uplifted and beautiful. Comfort and fit are not restricted to bras either, according to Thomas. “We also pride ourselves on our in-house designed sleepwear with built-in support. It is one of our best sellers,” she says. For Thomas and her staff, the most interesting thing about the $30 billion global lingerie business is that it showed no decline during the global financial recession. “Girls may have cut-back on some luxuries, but underwear wasn’t one; most countries registered ongoing growth since 2008,” she said. “If customers feel you are there to lend a hand and help them get real value for their hard earned rands, then they will not only buy from you over and over again but

HE Kloof Street Patrol CPF team hosted its first Christmas Charity Initiative party on Saturday 7 December. According to CPF project coordinator Nikki Mohlmann, the Fields Hill tragedy touched their lives and the CPF wanted to make a difference to the lives of the children left behind after the tragedy. “We worked closely with Karen Janisch from the Fields Hill Helping Hands group to get in touch with the families and co-ordinate the meeting points with the guardians. “Our patrollers transported the children to the party from as far as Hammarsdale. “Jill from Meercats pub kindly sponsored the transport for our Pinetown families,” said Mohlmann.
Not even the miserable weather could put a dampener on the special party plans, as Uncle Jumbo’s marquee offered shelter. The CPF Chairman and head of the Street Patrol Team, Corne Broodryk, opened the function with a heartfelt speech. The children’s faces lit up when Father Christmas ( aka Jono Stock, one of the Kloofstreetpatrollers)andhishappyhelpers handed out gift bags overflowing with clothes, sweets and toys. “The big secret we had been keeping as a surprise was announced – Nedbank Risk Department has undertaken to pay for school fees, school uniforms and stationery for each child next year,” said Mohlmann. “The marquee quickly filled with excitement as the children went through their gift bags, had their faces painted

and played on the jumping castle sponsored by Nedbank. “Each guardian was also given an envelope with money towards groceries donated by staff in the Nedbank HR department.” She said that Wimpy Kloof made sure all the little tummies were full with burgers, chips and cold drinks before the big moment arrived – Gillitts Fire Department drove in with a fire truck with flashing lights and sirens blaring. They gave a demonstration for the children and showed them how everything in the truck worked. MohlmannsaidthattheChirstmasparty was a heart-warming day, none of which would have been possible without the amazing generosity of the Kloof residents and the corporate sponsors. “A special thanks goes to everyone that assisted,” she added.

THOUSANDS of residents from the Upper Highway area and surrounds have helped make a difference to the lives of ill, orphaned and destitute children in KZN by raising a whopping R1 034 380 during the East Coast Radio and Game Toy Story Corporate Day Challenge. The money will be used to provide meals to primarily child-headed households across KZN. This as Toy Story continues to roll out toy drop-offs at hospitals, children’s homes and orphanages. The joy of giving ones, it’s the first time their little fingers would’ve unwrapped a new toy; the first time they would have experienced a shiver of excitement when presented with a gift and the first time they have the joy of holding something that is completely theirs. Damon Beard extended his show for 15 minutes after 6pm to make sure the campaign topped the R1 million mark. Celebrities from all over South Africa joined East Coast Radio presenters at Suncoast Casino, Hotel and Entertainment to make this possible. THE ‘Cooking Kids’ Mini Chef Competition was held at Meryl’s School of Cooking in Kloof on the 9, 10 and 11 December with 18 eager chefs making a starter on day one, a main course on day two and a dessert on the last day. Beautiful bruschetta, a festive chicken dish with greens and last, but not least, a tasty chocolate, glittering choux pastry ring was produced by the teams of two. Each day a celebrity chef tasted the dishes and chose the winning team. Fashion designer and mother of four, Karen Monk Klijnstra, was the judge of the starter while Karen McIntosh of Miss K Ice Cream Food chose the winning team for the chicken dish. Karen McIntosh spoke to the children about the importance of making healthy choiceswhenitcomestoeating. Miss K Ice Cream Food contains vitamins and protein, is a probiotic and is naturally sweetened. LOOF High’s Gwynne Gosher is heading for retirement after 40 years in the teaching profession, and word around the white-board is that colleagues and pupils are going to miss their “gem” dearly. Gosher’s career in education dates back to the 60s. She graduated from Wits in 1968 and from Johannesburg’s College of Education in 1969. She took up her first teaching post at Queen’s High School in 1970 to teach biology and general science. DuringhertimeatQueen’s,shelearnedhow to “control a class of lively youngsters” and also coached tennis and netball. Gosher took a three year break from teaching to look after her young children, Donovan and Shelley, and then taught at Edenglen High School for three years. Following her husband’s transfer to Durban, she accepted a six week locum at Kloof High School, was offered and accepted a fulltime post, and ended up teaching at Kloof High for 28-years. During this time, Gosher swapped biology for physical science and says she has enjoyed the challenge presented by the subject. She says there have been “many changes” during her 40 years in the classroom. “The introduction of adding machines fol-
lowed by calculators, overhead projectors, fax machines and photocopiers made life easier,” she said. “Then there were computers, the internet, cellphones and a whole new approach to learning. Now there are white-boards, smartboards, laptops and projectors as teaching aids.” Gosher said the end of Apartheid led to changes in the composition of the student body and teaching staff. The syllabus also changed with the introduction of OBE and then again with its demise. Gosher also took an active interest in school activities. She was involved in cross country and swimming for many years. “The swimming team is particularly close to my heart; so much so that I have promised to attend all the galas in the first term next year to lend support,” she said. “Iwillmissthepupils, thededicatedandcaringstaffatKloofHighSchool, andtheschoolactivities, but it is time for me to take the next step in life’s journey.” Gosher said that Kloof High is a good school. “Pupilsleavingarewellpreparedtotackletheir future lives with confidence.” Dawn Lefort, principal of Kloof High, said that the management, staff as well as parents and pupils wish Gosher a happy retirement withtimetorelaxwithherfamily, andthankher for her many years of dedicated service to the school.
