9 YEAR-OLD Sibusiso Blessing Ngcobo appeared at the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court last week and was sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment for house robbery committed in the Upper Highway Area in March this year. According to Hillcrest police communications officer, lieutenant France Mkhize, the incident occurred on 18 March at Link Road in Waterfall. “The victim, Malcom Northey, was standing outside his house when he was attacked by two men and a struggle ensued,” said Mkhize. “The suspects overpowered Northey and forced him into the house. They then tied his hands and legs with a rope and left him on the couch.”

Mkhize said that the suspects ransacked the house and got away with a cellphone, wallet, jewellery, clothing and shoes. “Northey was later untied by his wife who arrived home shortly after the attack and reported the incident,” he said. “After intensive investigation one of the suspects was arrested.” Hillcrest SAPS station commander, Colonel Thandeka Mbele, commended the teams responsible for the arrest and successful conviction of the suspect. “It is with such diligent policing that we can reduce the crime that is ravaging the Upper Highway Area,” she said. Mbele urged residents to trust the SAPS and report all criminal offences, no matter how small they seem to be. To report crime in the area, contact the police on 031 765 9116.

X-Rays, Pets and Owners Technically speaking, X-rays are the actual beams of invisible, high-energy radiation produced by an X-ray machine. The beams pass through tissue and expose a special cassette – either a film or fluorescent screen. In the old days, film cassettes with silver-based linings were the norm; these days, more and more vets are moving to digital systems that scan the image on a fluorescent plate, and then reset the plate after taking the image off them. It

means no chemicals and quicker pictures, nottomentionlessradiationexposurefor staff and patient – but the systems cost R250,000 – R400,000 (or more). I have seen beautiful films and crappy digital images. It’s about technique, positioning and appropriate X-ray machine settings, not the technology one uses. The actual image is called a RADIOGRAPH and a specialist who interprets these is a RADIOLOGIST. There are only

about a half-dozen in SA, and most are at the university. Sometimes vets will send radiographs to them for a more detailed or skilled interpretation, and sometimes images MUST be interpreted by a radiologist. Hip- and elbow dysplasia certification radiographs are a case in point. To have an X-ray machine a practice must be licenced by the SABS, and all staff must have their own X-ray badges that measure that individual’s rate of exposure.Badgesarechangedeveryquarter and this costs money. Pregnant staff, people under 18 and people without a

badge i.e. YOU, a member of the public, CANNOT be present in the X-ray room when exposures are being taken. This means you cannot help restrain your dog forradiographs.Thevetcangetinveryserious trouble! Unlike in human medicine, the films or images are the property of the veterinary hospital,andmustberetainedasmedical records for 7 years. They can be forwarded, via you, a courier or email, to another vet, upon need or request, but you can’t demand them without a reason. Sorry, that’s the rules, we just follow them!

Protest over tree removals

EMBERS of the Hillcrest community gathered in their numbers brandishing handmade signs to protest the removal of five indigenous trees by a developer outside a Caltex garage on Old Main Road on Saturday. The trees were removed earlier this year by developer Luis Farias, who stated that it was done for safety reasons. Farias was previously shot and paralysed in a business robbery, and claimed that after he had taken over the Caltex garage, he needed to make his surroundings safer. “I love trees, but I will not endanger my life again by having huge trees in front of my business property where criminals can hide out,” he said. “The area now has clear visibility into and out of the service station, which

"Now people can look forward to a safe and secure service station right at their doorstep." However the decades old trees were iconic to the neighbourhood and according to residents, gave Hillcrest the “green and leafy edge”. Residents are demanding that the trees be replaced and are appealing to Farias to not destroy the neighbourhood

any further. Steve Camp of the Hillcrest Scouts Group which led the protest, said the scouts have gone to extreme lengths to Keep Hillcrest Beautiful and this included planting 15 indigenous trees recently. He said that the removal of the trees by Farias is uncalled for, and a total disregard to the values of the community. “As a community we have made it very clear to Luis Farias and Caltex that his personal circumstances and business requirements did not justify the illegal cutting down of the five 50-year-old indige-

nous trees which were on council owned property,” said Camp. “The five trees were not located that close to the Caltex garage and their branches were a good two metres off the ground so there was absolutely no way those trees posed any security threat. By illegally cutting down these old trees the security of the area has not been improved either.” Camp said that Farias actions clearly demonstrate that he has no respect for the environment, the law or community in which he wants to do business.

“Our message is quite simple; those trees are environmental assets which belonged to the Hillcrest community. “All we request is that they be replaced with mature trees of similar size back where they were illegally cut down, then we as a community will stop with our protests and can put this sorrowful saga behind us,” he added. Jenny Loughlin of the Kassier Road Project added that the Hillcrest community cannot stand by and allow business owners such as Luis Farias to chop down mature trees after being denied permission to do so. “His unlawful actions have left a bare and ugly scar along tree lined Old Main Road and this is totally unacceptable." T the national annual general meeting of the Spar group in KZN, held at Sibaya on 19 November, Shaun Quin of Waterfall Spar was handed the Young Achievers Award for 2013. This is one of Spar's top awards, given to an individual who has made a significant contribution and has experienced personal growth in the food retail industry. Quin’s rise to success began after matriculating from Kearsney College. Time for apathy is over A FEW months ago I wrote to the Hillcrest Fever saying that the minister of police found a quick fix to the crime problems in the area. An elderly couple that was quite frail and posed no threat to any person let alone an armed criminal, was brutally murdered and once again residents are living in fear. This is an old clichè, but as

long as the justice system continues to fail residents, it won’t be long before residents take matters into their own hands. The minister of police needs to take some drastic measures if residents are expected to trust the system. There is no room for apathy any more. Please use your vote wisely. Lena

A few years ago, a former employer subjected my team to a day of “boot camp”. This trumped my family being abducted by aliens, being dumped for a blow-up doll on account of my smart mouth, and seeing Zuma being inaugurated as president to become the very worst day of my life. Endorphins are like the Loch Ness Monster and Atlantis in my mind – their existence is dubious at best. HE recent media storm surrounding JaySingh,abusinessmannotparticularly well known beyond the borders of Durban until last week, has been remarkable. What will define the Singh story is not how it was unearthed, but whether it will remain relevant in a country that has seen manyotherbusinessmenaccusedofshady deals come and go, and come again. Witness readers (The Witness is sister paper to the Fever fold) will know that Singh was building a mall in Tongaat, without council approval, which collapsed last week. Two lives have been lost and about 30 people were injured. Workers were removing scaffolding supporting three parking levels when the top level buckled. A grisly domino effect ensued as the third level collapsed onto the second, the second onto the first, until it crashed to the ground.

As soon as the incident was reported by emergency services, it caused a media feeding frenzy. Within a matter of hours the story went global, being broadcast by every major English news channel. The hook was that 50 people had been trapped or crushed. At the time, the incident was being intensely followed and toutedaspossiblythecountry’ssinglelargest construction accident. Fears that this was an act of terrorism similar to the Westgate Mall incident in Kenya earlier this year could have further fuelled international interest. Thankfully, neither scenario played out and to a large extent the international media withdrew. But for South Africa, and more importantly Durban, the issue has not been put to rest. The question doing the rounds now is who is Singh and why hadn’t we heard of him before this incident? Witness and Fever readers, of course, are well versed in Singh and his construction company, thanks to an in-depth piece in the week before the incident. So why the interest in Singh? Because

he is part of Durban’s nouveau riche who have taken advantage of eThekwini’s massive empowerment ambitions. This has led to a new class of millionaire being created through government tenders and preferential procurement policies. Many have had questionable credentials, such as Durban’s bling businesswoman Shauwn Mpisane, currently being prosecuted for tax fraud. Singh has positioned himself, through various companies, to capitalise on big money transactions. In a country where corruption stories flood the media space, men like Singh are quickly forgotten if their story isn’t sexy enough. Failing to build a low cost house correctly does not incense us as much as it should. What we know is that Singh has been convicted of fraud and his business aptitude has been questioned by the council through a report commissioned to investigate shoddy workmanship on housing projects. He was part of the BEE deal that bought Durban Transport and nearly

bankrupted it before promptly selling it back to the council five years later. He runs his businesses through family and friends, and has diverse interests including property development and construction. In fact there is probably not an industry that Singh is not involved in. HeopenlystateshedonatestotheANC and in many circles is believed to use this position as a means of securing a favourable relationship with council. And he is a quiet man maintaining a relatively low public profile - until now. Why Singh is of such intense interest resonates on several levels, depending on where you come from. Rumours abound that Singh used his influence to circumvent council’s building procedures to start building the Tongaat Mall–inotherwords,hewasshownpreferential treatment. If true, it would be appropriate to ask how often this is done and by who, for whom. The less glaring issue is that Singh is arichIndianwhohasbenefitedfromBEE deals. There is an undercurrent in Durban

that has seen increased negativity against Indian businessmen. Ironically, this is largely due to Jacob Zuma courting questionable and opportunistic businessmen, some of whom happen to be Indian. In a society bloated with corruptionlinked villains, Singh fits the role perfectly. He is deemed shady, a crook, who profits from the poor while driving luxury cars and living in luxury homes. Rich bad guys are always more interesting than poor suspects. They add colour, they have more to lose besides time injail–theyhavemoney,statusandpower. To watch a man fall from grace in a country swimming with corruption is a story South Africans want to read. The real challenge comes with longevity. How long will the Singh saga remain in the public spotlight? Will readers and media care two months from now?Or will wecharacteristically let this, along with hundreds of others, slip into the shadows because the scandal reaches its sell-by date, or is eclipsed by a bigger and better villain? Are we just waiting for someone with a story sexier than Singh’s to come along?

Instructions Open a skein of cotton and snip the loop at each end so you have two bunches; repeat with the other skein. Take one red bunch and one white bunch and tie them together into a single knot around the end of a pipe cleaner. To make the stripes, twist the two colours around the pipe cleaner and knot the ends together around the other end. Trim the cotton at both ends and trim the pipe cleaner if needs be. Welcome to Anthony Rupert L'Ormarins L'Ormarins is the main estate in the group farms and is situated in the Franschhoek area. The farm has a combination of both low-lying land as well as moderate to steep slopes. There is an altitude difference of 385m between the lowest (165m) and the highest (580m) points on the farm. The vineyards are mainly planted on the slopes of the Groot Drakenstein Mountains where the granite soils produce robust, expressive wines.

Anthonij Rupert Protea Sauvignon Blanc 2013 This wine is a 100% Sauvignon Blanc made from grapes from L'Ormarins, Franschhoek - a warmer climate, and from Altima in Villiersdorp - a cooler climate, where the 2nd highest vineyards inSouthAfricaaresituated.Altimaalso has very flinty, granite soils. The warm climate offers good fruitiness and lovely tropical characters, while the cool climate gives aromatics of green pepper and asparagus Aromas of freshly peeled lemons with just a hint of gravel can be found on the nose. The palate is gentle and appealing, not spiky nor aggressively acidic. It's rich with lemon cream flavour and passion fruit vibrancy. Lovely freshness throughout, with a typical zestiness, is apparent from start to finish.

NISSAN PATHFINDER 2.5 DCI SE AUTO (4X4) BY FIRST IMPRESSIONS:

hen I say –it is a box with a bonnet added, I'm not being derogatory in any way. Let me put it this way. The Pathfinder has in no way a fancy design. Straight lines all through bar the wheel arches. This latest version of the Pathfinder has been "downgraded" a bit in the sense that some features have been omitted to the price tag lower. The Pathfinder with its squarish design makes full use of this and offers a lot of interior space. With a luggage bay varying from 515 dm3 to a massive2091dm3thePathfinder'sspace is impressive. Although having been "downgraded" somewhat it still sports some chrome around the grille. The face of the Pathfinder is similar to its stable mate, the Navara. On this model the driving lights up front have been replaced with plastic "bungs". Roof-rails come as a standard option. The rear door is huge making loading at the back quite easy. There are a number of stowage "boxes" in the floor of the luggage bay. Withtheinteriorthereisverylittletocom-

plain about. The seats are comfortable and space is not a problem. Even with me sitting comfortably there is still enough space left at the rear for a large person to sit without being squashed. Instrumentation as functional and well laid out and everything is within easy reach of the driver. THE RIDE: From the turning of the key I knew that the drive was going to be a nice comfortable and rather soft one. The 2.5 turbo diesel was not as noisy as one would expect.ThePathfinderisa4X4andthevarious modes (2H, 4H & 4L) are selected via a large knob between the front seats. The model I had is the 5-speed automatic version. Without any problems the Pathfinder was up to cruising speed and I have to admit the ride was not at all bumpy even on the bad road sections which I took. There were parts where it rained quite heavily and I experienced no problems with the roadholding of the Pathfinder. The power to weight ratio is really good and the engine never "laboured' under any of the driving conditions. The auto-box changed without delay when needed. The consumption was averaging out at 10.1 litres/100km, which is acceptable for the size and weight of it.

SOME TECHNICAL JARGON: The 2488cc, 4-cylinder, 16-valve turbo diesel engine has a power rating of 140 kW @ 4000 rpm. Torque is given as 450 Nm @ 2000 rpm. The engine is coupled to a 5-speed automatic transmission. The Pathfinder comes with 17" alloy wheels and 255/65 R17 tyres. It comes with 2 & 4-wheel drives as well as 4wheel low range selection. OOPSIES: The one aspect which I found a little irritating was the height of the driver's seat. Although very comfortable, it was just that little too high, even at its lowest position, causing me to bump/scrape my head against the top of the door opening

everytimeIgotin.Onceinsidethereisample headroom though. THE VERDICT: I did not have a chance to take the Pathfinder into the rough terrain. As such I can not comment on it's 4X4 capabilities. I can comment that it performed well in the wet road conditions. The Pathfinder offers a soft ride and the suspension might be a bit "soft" for the real rough terrain, but that I could not prove and is just an opinion which is based on a patch of bad road conditions. If space is what you are looking for and with an acceptable diesel consumption, then the Pathfinder might be the option for you. Your Nissan dealer will be glad to answer all your questions.

ES, I really enjoyed it,” were the words of the tall 16-year-old, Travis Teasdale, when asked if it was possible to enjoy the extremely tough and challenging three-day ‘Roof of Africa’ enduro race that took place in horrendous weather conditions in Lesotho over the weekend. It was the 2013 Junior National Off-road Champion’s first ‘Roof’ attempt and an event that will go down in the history of the modern ‘Roof of Africa’ as a very wet and slippery race that not only tested the riders’ abilities and skills, but also their determination and perseverance. The young Teasdale, who competed for the first time for Team Brother Broadlink KTM, started Day Two on Friday in sixth place after

posting a fast time at the 45km time-trial. After six hours and 42 minutes on a wet saddle, he completed the day in 15th place overall – he injured his leg when he crashed, but the words ‘giving up’ are not in his vocabulary and he pushed hard till the end. When yet another misty and rainy day greeted them on Saturday morning, he was up for the task ahead despite still suffering from his leg injury. The 120 odd kilometre route was changed somewhat due to the incessant rain that kept on falling through the night, but the slippery rocks and muddy roads did not keep him back as he enjoyed the challenge. Unfortunately his service crew missed him at the first service point – many crews and riders missed each other due to the traffic jams on the gravel roads – and he ran out of snacks, but his good friend and coach, William ‘Wild Will’ Gillitt (he finished his umpteenth ‘Roof’ in 13th place) shared his food with him and Teasdale was good to go again! After racing for just over 10 hours on Saturday, Travis received the chequered flag as a signal that he has finished his first ‘Roof of Africa’ and he is already looking forward to many more. His total race time for the three days, were 18 hours and just over 14 minutes putting him in 15th place overall (only one minute separates him from Wynand Badenhorst in 14th place.) Teasdale was in the company of some of the world’s best extreme enduro riders with the UK rider, Graham Jarvis taking victory for the second time while the Kiwi, Chris Birch, who lived and raced in South Africa for two years and coached the youngsters, finished second. Teasdale’s teammate, Scott Bouverie, was third. Now it’s back to school and exams while the planning and training for the 2014 racing season continue.
