RELIEF after missing man found unharmed

FTER three gruelling days of searching, missing Bluff man Ian Henry has been found unharmed and is back home with his family.

Henry went missing on Monday 20 January after he was to attend a meeting at the Bluff Meat Supply store in Springfield Park, but never pitched up.

His family and friends claimed that Henry was a punctual person, and not arriving for a meeting and having his phone switched off was out of character.

According to Steven King of Waterfall

Crime Watch, Henry's vehicle had been spotted at 12.55am at Suncoast Casino.

He was later found in the Durban CBD safe and unharmed.

“Mr Henry’s family is extremely thankful to all those who helped in the search and will release a statement once they have composed one,” said King.

Meanwhile Henry’s family remain mum on the situation surrounding the incident. It is alleged that the family is either switching off their cellphones or ignoring calls and messages, even those from the police.

He said that about two hours later Henry was seen in his vehicle by a private investigator. “We have not recieved any statement from the family as yet and the case is still being investigated.”

Mkhize said that he cannot divulge any further information until the investigation has been completed.

Hijack suspect gets eight years

A

FTER several months of intensive investigation the Hillcrest SAPS Crime Prevention, Tactical Response Team and Crime Intelligence made a breakthrough that led to the arrest of a suspect in connection with a hijacking on 4 April, 2012.

According to Hillcrest police communications officer Lieutenant France Mkhize, the suspect, 25-year-old Sibusiso Blessing Zondi targeted a female while she pulled over on the side of the road to answer a phonecall.

“The victim was confronted by two armed men who demanded her valuables,” he said.

“One of the men brandished a firearm and demanded the car.

“The suspects pushed the victim out of the

car and made a getaway.”

Mkhize said that the vehicle registration was circulated and two officers on patrol spotted it and gave chase.

“The suspect lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a tree. As police approached they fled,” he said.

“One suspect was arrested and after further investigation was convicted to eight years’ imprisonment.”

Mkhize said that the management of the Hillcrest SAPS commend the team for the conviction of the suspect.

“Itiswithdedicationandperseveranceofofficers such as these that we can eradicate crime from our community,” he added.

A28-YEAR-OLD manfromtheUpperHighway Area was arrested for carjacking in Pinetown by the members of Durban South K9 Unit on Wednesday.

According to provincial police spokesperson Thulani Zwane, the victim parked his motor vehicle at Van der Byl road, New Germany and went over to chat to his friend who was also parked at the side of the road.

“While they were chatting inside his friend’s vehicle, two men approached them from the passenger side and one of the suspects brandished his firearm towards the victim and pulled him outside the motor vehicle, telling him to look forward and not to look at them,” said Zwane.

“The suspect’s put his hands inside the victim’s pocket and took the car keys and R700 cash. The other man hijacked the victim’s

Two die in motorbike accident KALISHA NAICKER A PEDESTRIAN and motorcyclist were killed in an accident on the M13 Hillcrest bound, on Wednesday afternoon.

According to Netcare 911’s Chris Botha, the biker was travelling towards Hillcrest when a pedestrian ran across the road, near the Richmond Road offramp.

“The biker collided with the man and he was flung from his vehicle and landed several metres away from the point of impact.

“Netcare 911 paramedics and other emergency personnel worked fervently to stabilise the injured.”

Both said, “Despite all the efforts from the paramedics, the pedestrian died on scene due to the extensive injuries. The biker later died at a nearby hospital.”

The matter is under investigation by the Hillcrest police.

The man will appear in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court soon facing hijacking charges.

Police are also appealing to anyone with details regarding the other suspects to please contact them.

Rat-bait poisoning (Rodenticides) DOGS are scavengers and will sometimes eat rat bait placed for vermin control. The problem with this is that rat bait is fatal.

Most rat baits in SA are “anticoagulant rodenticides” meaning they prevent the rat from clotting its blood. One to two days after ingestion, the rat begins to leak blood from all major vessels, into the abdomen, chest, eyes and joints (rarely the skin, nose and gut). The animal will die from rapid blood loss within a day or two.

A dog would need to eat a pile of rats 30cms high to get enough rat bait in to be similarly affected.

When the bait is ingested it blocks a liver enzyme responsible for making proteins called clotting factors. Some clotting factors, like Factor 7 in particular (but also 2, 9 and 10) are Vit-K-dependent.

This means that in the case of Factor VII, within 7+1/2 hours of being exposed to rait bait, your body will have exhausted

its stores of the protein and any damage to a blood vessel wall will result in massive bleeding (haemorrhage).

The diagnosis is made on a history of ingestion, bleeding into body cavities, or sometimes a clotting test (PT/PTT). The problem with a PT/PTT test is that a large volume – 4.5ml – of blood is needed, which means taking it from the jugular.

The treatment consists of Vitamin K injections followed by tablets – 2 weeks minimum in the case of a first-generation rodenticide like Racumin, or 6–8 weeks or longer for a second rodenticide. A PT/PTT may be required 48hrs after the end of treatment to check that more tabs aren’t needed.

Von Bargen, who provides traffic updates on East Coast Radio and is the managing director of Pro Driving Tactics, has been at the forefront of the fight against hijackers for a number of years.

The speaker had the audience in stitches at the seminar and shared tips on how to prevent hijackers from taking their cars and how one can avoid becoming a statistic.

Von Bargen says that drivers need to understand hijackers in order to avoid them.

“The only thing hijackers are interested in is money. They want your vehicle so that they can sell it for money.

“They are not interested in you or your children who are seated in the back, so it’s always best to just give them what they want,” said Von Bargen.

He said that with just basic small changes, residents can reduce their risk profiles, and a priority is awareness.

Von Bargen said that a moving vehicle is less likely to be targeted.

“A hijacker cannot run faster than a vehicle and a person’s chance of being hijacked is reduced by 97 percent if the driver remains mobile. According to statistics only three per cent of hijackers target moving vehicles.”

Von Bargen told residents that the old myth of changing routes to and fromworkeverymorningisoneofthe safest methods to avoid becoming a statistic.

“If a hijacker knows your daily routine, then it’s more likely that you may become an easy target — use alternate routes,” he said.

“We are not trying to disrupt your lifestyle,buttrytoincorporatesimple changes.” (See tips for more details.)

KALISHA NAICKER DESPITE numerous community clean-ups and signage stating that the area is not a dumpsite, dumping remains a problem at the Eskom sub-station off Springside and Inanda Bridge (Hell’s Gate) in Hillcrest.

Last week the Hillcrest Fever reported on the Hillcrest Park Neighbourhood Watch (HPNW) which has taken action by adopting the “broken windows” crime-fighting strategy that worked wonders in New York City. They are literally cleaning up the community to reduce opportunistic crimes.

Now the group has taken action to stop dumping and track down the perpetrators.

According to HPNW chairperson Shaun Lyle they have launched an area patrol partnering with on-site security to conduct a permanent clean-up of the areas.

“This year alone two four-ton loads have been removed, with the assistance of Robs Cartage, from the area,” he said.

“We removed construction material, garden refuse, household waste and numerous rubbish items.”

Lyle said that residents do not realise that the dumping and overgrown bushes can contribute to rising criminal elements.

“Heaps of trash provide criminals with easy access to the area. It also provides them with hideouts for their stolen goods,” he said.

Lyle urged residents to always keep the site clean and clear of litter. “There is still a lot to be done in these areas, however, we welcome any resident who is able and willing to lend support.

“If we do not take our own area back rest assured no one else will do it for us.”

Lyle urged residents to report offenders to the local authorities or HPNW. “All information will be kept confidential. It is up to us to keep our community clean and safe of all elements.”

OCAL councillor Rick Crouch is outraged at the 17 million block allocation of funds by the government and is demanding answers.

Blocksum allocations are lump sums of money that are allocated to various wards — usually for capital expenditure projects. These funds are allocated to projects in the ward by the ward councillor, usually in consultation with the ward committee.

InthisinstanceR1 million was allocated per ward. AccordingtotheDAcouncilloron the 14 August 2013, ANC councillors held a clandestine blocksum allocation meeting at city hall wheretheyunilaterallydecidedtodivert public funds for the benefit of individuals.

“ANC councillors excluded all opposition parties from this meeting

where they unilaterally took decisions to use blocksum allocation to renovate an ANC councillors’ office, upgrade a privately owned hall and build steps in an informal settlement situated on private land,” he said.

“I was purposefully excluded from this meeting despite my ward being on the agenda,” he added.

Crouch said that had he been present at this meeting, there is no way he would have allowed ANC councillors to redirect public funds for his ward in the manner that they did.

“I first became aware of the secretive meetings after being sent an SMS indicating that a meeting would take place at the city hall on Wednesday 14 August 2013.

“The residents of Ward 10 have a right to know what happened to the R1 million that was allocated to their

ward, and in his usual way the speaker is denying all knowledge and hoping that the issue will simply go away.

It has been five months and we have still not received any answers.

“What is also disturbing is that the money has been allocated by the ANC to footpaths in an informal settlement on private property. Although it is a good idea, it is illegal and irregular expenditure and they have put my name to it, so although I was not there and they made the allocation I will be responsible when the Auditor General questions the irregular expenditure,” said Crouch. eThekwini spokesperson Thabo Mofokeng said that as far as he is aware the meeting was caucus one.

“The matter is being investigated and the department does not take such allegations lightly.

“We will provide a proper statement to the media once all the information is gathered,” Mofokeng added.

SAPS Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni has been on a report-back mission this week with various crime department heads.

All provincial managers, cluster commanders and station commanders in KZN SAPS were expected to provide feedback on their efforts to clamp down on crime over the festive season as well as their performance for the first nine months of the financial year.

A critical assessment of the police’s performance — in terms of their strategic plan — and the way forward for the remainder of the financial year would also be carried out.

The provincial commissioner was also expected to establish from the station commanders (on Monday and Tuesday this week) whatotherchallenges they were experiencing on the ground and how these could be overcome.

“There can be no doubt in our mind thatthisprovinceisa better place because of the collective efforts of all those in the forefront of fighting crime,” Ngobeni said.

The unexplained, finally explained

Such was my horror at the supposed horror I should have felt that waves of paranoia engulfed me.

If I watched the entire episode would my frontal lobe be rendered as barren as the womb of a biblical heroine?

I watched, I yawned, I ate, I yawned, I frowned, I yawned, I strummed my air guitar, I yawned.

I finally reached the end of the programme and felt chills scuttle up and down myspineasitbecameapparent that there was another episode after that, and another.

It was a supernatural omnibus worthy of a Stephen King wet dream. Now, as you will know, gentle reader, television offerings of the paranormal are made to formula, as is everything that carries a “reality� label. And that paranormal formula will, at some point, include a shaky hand-held camera, night-vision videoing, faint groaning (often from the audience), a team of hunters-of-the-supernatural and more indecipherable syllables than a drunk teenager.

Those unintelligible noises will sound like static to you and me, but to the telekinetic-wannabes hired forthe show, translation is easy when using something akin to a walkie-talkie, connected to a 1995 Blaupunkt stereo, connected to an egg beater, connected to disco lights.

Thus while you and I will hear static, the telekinetic-gurus will hear “leave this house now or die weak human scum�.

I must confess that I was unable to decipher the sound to this extent during the omnibus, with my translation coming out as “your nipple is on fire in the apple orchard bran muffin�.

This, I think, is proof that if my home is to be haunted one day, it will be by a pervert with a faulty colon who desires fibre-rich foods.

My story, I believe, will make a riveting reality show, which DStv will no doubt snap up and snuggle between Psychic CEOs and Par

anormal Pawn Stars.

F you are a corporate wage-slave, you may sometimes rock yourself to sleep while lamenting an eight to 12-hour work day.

This is most noticeable in it “reality� offerings, with one of the more perplexing in this genre being anything to do with the paranormal.

Haunted houses, possessed people and demonic dachshunds – throw the word “paranormal� or “psychic� into the mix and you are sure to have a salivating audience of mental midgets waiting to be astounded by how intense the latest episode of Psychic Potato Pickers is.

I stumbled on such a programme over the weekend while doing a beluga-whale impersonation on the couch.

Most of this I can make my peace with, but for me, life without quality coffee is like asking high-ranking ANC officials to stop eating KFC. The cessation of drinking coffee is deplorable and I have thus come up with a list of inventive ways to get my fix free of

everything from coffee and biscuits to booze and Woolworths snacks are freely available. Unfortunately, however, my omnipresent honesty let me down once again, and instead of an abundance of free coffee, I got a suspended sentence and a lifelong ban from King Shaka International Airport.

In my pursuit of free coffee, I have learnt to overcome my hatred of meetings.

Neighbourhood watch pow-wows and getting out of the office to have unnecessary meetings with stakeholders are sure-fire tickets to a free coffee. If you are clever, you can even spend enough timeataparent-teachermeetingtoscore a cup before they realise you are not in fact a parent.

Afteralmostamonthoflivinglikethis, I’ve had enough. I’m buying some coffee.

I’ll pay for it by downgrading to one-ply toilet paper and changing my phone number so as to avoid the debt collectors.

Radio jock aims for the 8 Mile Club

UPPER Highway's Radio presenter Abi Ray of East Coast Radio already has many feathers in her cap but in two weeks’ time, she’s hoping to add another — membership of the 8 Mile Club (four events on Saturday and four events on Sunday - all for the charity).

Anexpertswimmer,Abiandherbrother Brad, have spent the past few weeks training for the aQuelle Midmar Mile weekend (8 and 9 February). Ray entered the event nine times before but this year poses her biggest challenge yet.

“I introduced my brother to the Midmar Mile last year; he swam on the Saturday as part of a team, and then went back on the Sunday to swim individually because he loved it so much. It was he who suggested we become part of the 8 Mile Club this year,” says Ray, who started swimming open water events at school.

“I initially thought that he must be absolutely mad, but then I thought about it and realised that if there is one thing that I can challenge myself with, it’s swimming.

I’ve been doing it my whole life.”

Now, the presenter is just weeks away

fromswimmingineveryeventatthisyear’s aQuelle Midmar Mile.

“We are doing it to raise funds for charity while taking on a massive personal challenge at the same time.

“What a goal to achieve. I hope we succeed.”

Ray has been training with a squad in Hillcrest — Aquazone Swimming. She trains three or four times a week, covering 2200m to– 3000m each time.

The Esibusisweni Crèche and Orphanage has very little in terms of supplies, furniture, toys and basic plumbing. Esibusisweni is kept alive by the gogo (Busiswe Dlamini) who owns the land and runs the orphanage and crèche with the help of some locals.

“Gogo started this crèche and orphanage because of her love of children and the need for care in the community,” said Chris Luthuli on behalf of the gogo.

“Gogo says that she has the land and what better way to use it than to care for the community she lives in?”

However,asanon-profitorganisation Esibusisweni Crèche and Orphanage does not receive funding from the government and is always looking for ways and means to care for its children.

“We are working on various initiatives to improve both the facilities and the experience we provide to the children we care for,” he said.

LuthulisaidthatthegoalsofEsibusisweni Crèche and Orphanage are to

obtain a bigger home for the children, as the rondavel they currently occupy is too small. He said other necessities the crèche is in need of are disposable nappies, and the home requires volunteers to assist in the day-to-day care.

The home also wants to provide nutritional meals for each child, as well as clothing, blankets, nappies, toys, a jungle gym, play equipment and daily activities for the children.

HE Esibusisweni Crèche and Orphanage is in the middle of Kwa Nyuswa near Botha’s Hill.

Situated at the top of a steep dirt driveway is a small rondavel, home to more than 50 children.

Esibusisweni is the essence of love, hope and community spirit, caring for children every day, without payment. The majority of these children are aged between one and five and need love, care and attention.

Eight orphans live at Esibusisweni

Following her dreams KALISHA NAICKER HAVING grown up in a female-dominated home — six girls and one boy — it was easy to choose a career which attracts mainly female clients and colleagues.

“This is however, changing,” explains 28-year-old Pearl Mchunu, head therapist at Brigit Filmer Spa & Skin in Gillitts.

Mchunu says that male clients often arrive at the spa because they have been advised to but after their first treatment they book another and become regulars.

The young go-getter spent her

teenageyearsinHillcrest,matriculated from Hillcrest High in 2003, and then studied somatology — the study of the body — at DUT in Durban.

During her three-year diploma, she worked part-time at Brigit Filmer Spa & Skin and as soon as she qualified, she became a full-time employee. “Massage was what I really wanted to do when I left school, but I thought that by doing a course which covered numerous skin and body therapies,Iwouldhavemoretooffer,’’ says Mchunu.

“Massage is also included in all treatments from facials to pedicures, so somatology seemed like the right

choice.’’ She said that although the three-year course was very intensive covering physics, biology, anatomy, nutrition, pharmacology and psychology, she is glad that she did the diploma as it has been a huge asset to herself and clients.

Mchunu said she enjoyed learning about nutrition, which they studied in-depth.

“This knowledge has been more useful than I imagined as nutrition plays a major role in how effectively the body functions and, in turn, the vitality of the skin.

“Clients constantly ask about what they should and shouldn’t be eating to improve the appearance of their body and skin, and I can advise them with confidence,knowingthatI havethree years of theory and seven years of ex-

building and wants to build at least four toilets.

However, without assistance from the community the home cannot offer quality care for the children.

“The community can help by means of donations such as food, clothes, toys, and they can even volunteer their services at the centre.

When Mchunu is not working she enjoys reading and watching movies, although the majority of her spare time is spent with her mom, five sisters, her brother, seven nieces and a nephew.

“My mom is the matriarch of the family. She is the principal of a junior primary school, so she doesn’t tolerate bad behaviour at work or at home,’’ laughs Mchunu.

“I believe the very definite boundaries she put in place when we were growing up is the reason that we are all hard working and determined to do our best at whatever we put our minds to.

EADING Kloof interior designer Bruce Fyfe has been invited to design and curate the annual Decorex Designer Spotlight at Decorex Durban in March.

Decorex Durban takes place over the Human Rights Day weekend from 20 to 23 March at the Durban Exhibition Centre and Fyfe’s collaboration with fabric house St Leger and Viney is certain to be one of the highlights of the exhibition.

“I’m really looking forward to being part of Decorex Durban again. Our presence in previous years has always brought us more business,” he said.

Speaking about the inspiration for his installation at Decorex Durban, Fyfe said he would be creating a plantation-style verandah with white columns and flooring “We’re going to create a typical American Deep Southstyle porch.

“We have found a beautiful contemporary swing seat and we will have sheer curtains moving in a breeze created by fans plus plenty of greenery to completetheplantationfeel,”hesaid.

Fyfe said that while he believes the stand décor will be something unexpected, it is also perfectly suited to the Durban lifestyle.

“We are all changing the way we decorate our verandahs – our outdoor entertainment area is now regarded as an extension of the home and that means we can decorate it like the rest of our home.”

The colour palette for Fyfe’s stand is shades of citrus orange and light grey and he said he was looking forward to working with the team from St Leger and Viney.

Marc Shotland, marketing manager of St Leger & Viney, said the most prominent fabric trends are towards bold and bright colours.

Collingwood said that his goal is to provide the community with the

healthiest plants and best seedlings.

Inanefforttoalsokeepthememory of his parents alive, The nurseryman plants a summer and winter garden for his mum and dad.

“No matter how successful we become, we need to always remember our roots, and my summer and winter gardens are what keep me grounded,” he added.

Collingwood thanked his family for giving him these talents and enabling him to turn a passion for plants into a successful business.

“I would also like to thank the nursery owners in the area and customers, for the support, unity and loyalty, because without them Greenman Nursery would not be a well-known brand in the Upper Highway area.”

Trail runners can earmark in their calendar the weekend of 22 and 23 Marchwithtwoexcitingeventstaking place in and around Dube City and Dube Tradeport in the La Mercy area.

The 10-kilometre Queen Nandi Night Run and Walk - on 22 March at 6pm - covers an exciting trail that takes participants around the resting place of the famous Barn Swallows near Mount Moreland.

Those wanting to spend the Saturday night at Dube City - so that they can run the King Shaka 10km or 25km Trail Run the next morning at 6am - are welcome to book a free and

secure tent site in the Dube Tent City.

A free fun run of about two kilometres will take place on Sunday morning while the King Shaka is being run.

HE newly appointed director of tugby at the Cell C Sharks. Jake White provided hundreds of school and club coaches from around the province with information at the 2014 Discovery SharkSmart Coaches Conference at a hot and humid Growthpoint Kings Park recently.

The 2007 World Cup winning coach is an avid supporter of the idea of having coaching conferences such as Friday’s showpiece and was quick to add his name to the list of the day’s contributors involved when he was called upon recently.

The former Springbok and Brumbies mentor led the coaches through a number of drills the Sharks canbeexpectedtousethisSuperRugby season and explained the intrica-

cies of how they benefit the team by breaking down the various elements of play.

As a former school master himself, White has been in similar shoes to those in attendance of the hugely successful 2014 edition of the annual coaching attraction and related to his

coaching colleagues on numerous levels.

“Conferences like this benefit everybody,” White said.

“I used to come to these coaching conferences when Mac [Ian McIntosh] used to run them. Guys used to line up to come and see what the

coaches had to say and I know just what it meant to me as a coach back then.”

White explained to the coaches that he was going to show them exactly what his newly acquired team do.

The transparency afforded all in attendance the unique and highlyprized opportunity to see just how a professional rugby outfit functions and was greatly appreciated by all.

Providing coaches from around the province with a centre that they can go to in order to obtain the necessary information for them to grow and develop is something White feels strongly about and is hoped will help build rugby at KZN schools.

While having an appeal to coaches far beyond the KZN borders, White hopesthemajorityofthebenefitofthe Discovery SharkSmart Coaches Con-

ference will be seen by locally based coaches and aid in developing a key relationship between the local rugby giant and those responsible for the development of rugby at amateur level.

“For me as a coach I always used to ask where can I go to get some new knowledge? Where can I go to ask questionsandwherecanIgotogetthe new trends in the game?

“I said to Smitty [Sharks new CEO John Smit] that this is one thing that I want to try and bring to the schools in Natal. Any guy from anywhere is welcome to come, but the Natal schools need to feel that there is a head office where they can come and ask those sorts of questions,” said White.

This picturesque race is a Two Oceans Marathon and Comrades Marathon qualifier.

From the centre of Hillcrest the race takes runners into the suburbs of Winston Park, then backuptothefinishatHillcrestVillagersSports Club.

Runners run a double-lap and T-shirts and medals will be awarded to all finishers, as well as category-winner prizes.

According to chairman Peter Burton, this is a pre-entry race with drop-off boxes at Sportzone, Durban Runner, Poobie Naidoo and Sportsmans Warehouse.

“Online and drop-off entries close on 31

January. The marathon has also attracted hand-cycles and wheelchairs and this is very popular,” he said “As always race organisers have had extensive discussions with the traffic authorities to minimise the impact on vehicle traffic in Hillcrest and Winston Park.”

Burton said that the Hillcrest Villagers will be imposing strict cut-off times on runners to ensurethatweareabletocleartheroadsofrunners in the shortest possible time, which is due to finish at 10am.

“We wish all our runners a happy run,” he added.
