The business owner did not consider the needs of the community before destroying what was not his. “KHBA will definitely be proceeding with legal action on this matter,” she said.

ILLCREST residents are “furious” after discovering that four 50year-old indigenous trees along the municipal verge on Old Main Road have been “killed” by a developer. However, theowners of the business where the felling took place said the trees had to be given the chop to prevent crime. Marge Mitchell of the Keep Hillcrest Beautiful Association (KHBA) was “livid” at the destruction. She said felling the trees was unlawful and “devastating” to the community. “When I drove along Old Main Road last week, I noticed the business owner with his workers, cutting one of the trees. “I stopped and told them

Don’t be hoodwinked by quacks and pH pills DR ANTHONY ZAMBELLI THERE are people out there trying to sell you the idea that you or your pet’s blood is too “acidic” or “alkaline”. Of course, they have a tablet/tonic/treatment for this to “restore balance”. What hogwash. Blood acidity is measured as pH. The pH of the blood is about 7.4 in normal animals. Stately trees chopped George Victor, chairman of the Hillcrest Conservancy, was “enraged” at the damage to the trees. “No individual is allowed to cut trees on municipal land. If the business owner claims to have permission to cut the trees, the conservancy is to request the paper work authorising him to do so.” However, business owner Luis Farias, who took over the Hillcrest Caltex site, said the area has had some “major issues” which have been widely advertised, such as armed robbery. “Based on the historical issues and robberies that the site has had, I personally said that the trees must be the first to go, this after seeing that the neighbouracrosstheroadwasalsocutting everything down,” he said. “I have been shot in an armed robbery before, have been in a coma for three months, was in a wheelchair for over a year and still suffer and endure extreme pain every day and my left leg is paralysed from that shooting. “This is a reminder that if invested wisely and planned wisely then, in terms of security, none of it would have happened.” Farias said that the site is and was a “filth pit” with vagrants “dumping their stuff” everywhere. “...the stench from human urine was evident in all corners of this site....” He said individual mechanics were repairing vehicles daily under the trees and leaving parts lying around, all because it was “convenient” and the trees offered them shade and comfort. “...I can’t replace the trees but as a whole we will make it stunning, we will make it safer, cleaner and certainly more customer friendly,” he added. Municipal spokesperson, Thabo Mofokeng, said no one is allowed to cut trees on municipal land. He said the matter is being investigated.

offered a proactive solution to the rampant crime plaguing us. We see the Watchmen system, with its “eyes in the sky” as contributing to tackling this problem with a 24/7 visual presence." The unique feature that sets Watchmen apart from any other street surveillance camera lies in its ability to link a residential alarm to the surrounding street surveillance. This innovative technology means that should a resident's home alarm be activated and it is linked to Watchmen, the Enforce Control Room will then be able to monitor any suspicious activity, persons or vehicles through the visuals sent by the cameras. This video footage further provides vital evi-
dence in solving criminal cases and can be used as evidence where criminal charges have been laid with the SAPS. “The installation of these Watchmen cameras follows our successful trials in The Woods and Gillits Park areas where a notable decline in criminal activity is now reported.” “ In consultation with The Hillcrest Park Community Association and Neighbourhood Watch, each camera has been strategically positioned to monitor the main entry and exit points as well as identified problem areas,” said Jayson Weideman, National Sales and Marketing Manager, Enforce Security Services. “The cameras are monitored by our 24 hour control room and do not contravene any privacy legalities.” Lyle added, “We are confident that Watchmen is the best workable solution to help bring this criminal scourge into check. Viva Watchmen Viva.” You will find the Watchmen community cameras monitoring activity at the corners of Hilltop and Inanda Road, Ridge and Inanda Road, Inanda and Valley Road, They are also found on Anthony Drive and Horseshoe Road, Stonewall and Springside Road and on Inanda Road at the Hillcrest Christian Academy School.

and Easter. Claus has exhausted his jolliness through taking a stand against this. He is no longer able to get his jollies on,” said D’ Elf. D’ Elf added that there was “no substance” to rumours that the cause of Claus’ breakdown could in fact be pinpointed to his estranged wife catching him entering the female elf barracks with a bottle of Klipdrift and a crate of Christmas mince pies just before his collapse. “These are malicious and unfounded lies,” said D’Elf. A family source known to the Fever said that Claus had been “emotionally degenerating” in recent years after coming under severe scrutiny for his “consistent and uncompromising” socialist attitude. While Claus’ estranged wife was at his side, a nursing sister said her countenance could best be described as odd. “She smiled at the cameras but as soon as they left, she stepped away from him and started adjusting her frock,” said the nurse. Ms Devi Claus, who originally hails from Stanger and was a finalist in the 1942 Stanger Pineapple Festival pageant, has been in the press recently for her very public “reinvention”. Ms Claus has been hailed by fashionistas for revamping her housewifey image to one that is “very Madonna and super inspiring to other cookie-making grandmother types over the age of 70”. Ms Claus dropped four dress sizes in three months, an accomplishment which saw her grace the cover of Vogue. “I owe it all to a consistent routine of binge and
purge,” she said in an exclusive interview with Huisgenoot soon after. The same family source quoted earlier said that relations between the Clauses had been “strained” for months. “It has become malicious, and the downward trend in the economy and media scrutiny about his status have just added fuel to the flames,” said the source. “He [Claus] had to retrench eight reindeer this year. A retrenched reindeer is never a happy chappy,” said the source, adding that death threats had been levelled against Claus since the restructuring. “Glittered pine cones and rolls of Clicks gift wrap were hurled through his bedroom window on more than one occasion,” said the source. “Everyone knows she [Mrs Claus] was behind the retrenchments. He [Mr Claus] told her to cut-back on the surgery, but she was adamant it had to be done...so reindeer had to be retrenched to accommodate the implants,” said the source. “It was round about this time that he forfeited Woolies’ eggnog for the hard stuff.” Claus went public a week ago to dismiss allegations that he was no longer representative of the greater population. “Nobody says these things about Boney M,” he wept at a UN-hosted press conference before flying to KZN for a spiritual retreat. YOU magazine has promised an exclusive with Claus upon his discharge.
THE BIG BANG THEORY
THE sound of pyrotechnics has filled the air over the past few days, as Hindus, pyromaniacs and unsupervised children run amok celebrating fireworks season, while the pet-sedative market flourishes and SPCA staff graft overtime to accommodate our traumatised four-legged friends. Let me start by saying that followers of the Hindu faith are excluded from the comments which follow. While the need for big bangs during a festival of light astounds me, especially when there are hundreds of clay lamps available at any given Crazy Store, fireworks have become an important part of this sacred religious festival, and taking them away would be like taking Santa away from Christian children. What’s more, Hindus have more important battles to fight, like defending Lord Ganesha from the cruel pencil of Jonathan Shapiro.
I address this to the rest of you, irrespective of colour or creed, who choose to light up our skies and assail our ears with the sounds of a battlefield. I am as much of an animal lover as a meat-eater can be, and as such, the onslaught of big bangs annoys me almost as much as organised religion. Surely the need to waste an inordinate amount of money on having a bigger and better fireworks display than your neighbour can be likened to schoolboys comparing the size of their genitalia in school changing rooms, or women undergoing botox, laser procedures and bi-weekly beauty treatments to look better than the next soccer mommy. The celebration of Guy Fawkes, highly irrelevant to South Africans, is a commemoration of the failed Gunpowder Plot of 16 voetsek, and a model of its perpetrator, Guy Fawkes himself, is traditionally burned
atop a bonfire. Since we have embraced this anglophile tradition so wholeheartedly, the least we could do is give it some “local is lekker” South African flavour. I have crafted life-size effigies of many of our most useless politicians and officials, including Jacob Zuma, Angie Motshekga, Julius Malema and Bheki Cele which are available for purchase. Burn them atop your bonfire with aplomb, using charge sheets and red berets as kindling. Most proceeds go directly to the SPCA and the Crazy Store. New Years Eve will soon roll around, and the onslaught of fireworks will once again fill our skies and our ears, this time with no religious traditions underpinning the explosions. Thankgoodnesstheyhaven’tyetconvoluted Valentine’s Day with marketing ploys about lighting the sky with fireworks of love.

HE Western Aqueduct (WA) construction is underway and residents in the Upper Highway area are requested to bear with eThekwini Water and Sanitation (EWS) as they install a massive 1 400mm (1.4m) steel pipeline that will bring muchneeded bulk water to Durban. The WA project as a whole extends from Umlaas Road, through Inchanga, Alverstone, Hillcrest and New Germany from where it crosses the Umgeni River to Ntuzuma. The first phase of the Western Aqueduct, from Umlaas Road to Inchanga, has already been constructed and was commissioned in December 2011. Two contracts for the construction of the second phase of the pipeline have been awarded and construction
Trenches have already been excavated and pipes laid near Old Main Road in Hillcrest. is already underway. Contract 1 - from Inchanga to Alverstone Nek Reservoir – would not adversely affect most road users as the bulk of the construction activities are taking place within registered servitude areas and on private properties. However, the contract 2 - from Alverstone Nek Reservoir to Ashley Drive in Hillcrest – is expected to cause disruption and have a major impact on road users as construction activities will take place in and across busy roads from Assegai to Hillcrest. Construction work is scheduled to have the minimum negative impact on road users. In addition, EWS will do its utmost to notify drivers of potential
blockages or road closures well ahead of time so that they can plan alternative routes. The actual pipeline excavation for the second contract, in road reserves began on 28 October. Access to properties will be maintained at all times with specific disruption for a couple of hours when the pipe is placed into the trench and when the trench is open in front of a driveway entrance. Roads that will be affected by pipeline are Clement Stott Road, the full length of Lello Road, Cadmoor Road, Gevers Road, Assegai Road, Kassier Road Sutton Place, RapsonRoad,GillitRoad,MontroseAvenue and Knelsby Avenue. Hillcrest stalwart dies
>> Well known historian left positive legacy in community
L
OCAL historian, author and well known Hillcrest resident, Elizabeth Camp, died unexpectedly on Monday 14 October, three weeks before her eightieth birthday. Born Elizabeth Anne Lidgett on 7 November 1933 at Grey’s Hospital in Pietermaritzburg, Camp grew up at Lastingham - the family homestead in Lidgetton where her family had settled in the early 1900s. She was educated at St John’s Diocesan School for Girls in Pietermaritzburg and trained and worked as a draughtswomanfortheSouthAfrican Railways, before marrying Barry Camp in 1961. The Camps settled at Hilltop Road in Hillcrest Park in 1965 and lived in the same house for the next 48 years. They had five sons: Stephen, Gregory, Martin, Richard and Peter. “Liz” or “Libby”, as she was fondly
known, was a keen amateur historian. Over the years she built up a sizeable collection of stories, anecdotes and documents related to the history of the area. These she edited and published in book form to mark the centenary of the village in 1995. The result was Lest We Forget: The Story of Hillcrest: 1895-1995, an enjoyable and interesting account of Hillcrest’s first 100 years. Having lived in the heart of the village for so long, Camp was uniquely placed to capture its changing character over time. In her book she chronicled how Hillcrest in the 1960s was a “very simple, quiet and happy” village, populated mainly by elderly folk and retired army couples. There was hardly any traffic and no tarred roads apart
from the village itself. Hillcrest Park was farmland with “cows grazing the virgin veld”, and Hilltop Road a “track with a middelmannetjie”. Post was collected from the post office and for seven years the family lived without a phone “as the small Hillcrest exchange had no vacant lines.” In the five decades that Camp lived in Hillcrest she witnessed her “sleepy village” boom out of all recognition into the mushrooming metropolis that it is today. “History is fascinating and in today’s world, not many people bother about the past,” she said at the time of her Hillcrest centenary publication. “It is vital to keep old photographs, letters and newspapers from the past and to enlighten people as to how life was all those years ago.”
True to her maxim, Camp also compiled a number of other historical manuscripts, including a detailed history of the Lidgett family, A Tale of Two Centuries: 1800-2000, which chronicled her settler family’s connection with the province. “My mother was a remarkable woman – a mine of information with an incredible memory for historical detail,” said her eldest son, Stephen. “I think there are few people around who knew as much about the history of Hillcrest as she did.” Elizabeth Camp is survived by her sons and their families, including nine grandchildren.

Hillcrest and matriculated from Hillcrest High School in 1989, qualifying as a veterinary surgeon at the University of Pretoria. She said watching her veterinary father Angus Pringle working to protect rhinos helpedherdevelopanearlyaffinitywithanimals and a passion for conservation. Much of Pringle’s UK conservation work focuses on a much smaller species – the humble hedgehog. She carries out emergency treatment and helps rehabilitate injured hedgehogs rescued by local organisation Herts Hogline. She believes no creature in need is too small to try to save – she has even carried out a legamputationonafrogwhichwas trapped in a pond filter.
“Being brought up in the bush in South Africa and inspired by my dad, I always cared about animals and I want to do my bit for conservation. I have a particular passion for the plight of the hedgehog as many people do not realise that they are soon to be endangered if we don’t protect them.” “Treating hedgehogs or frogs comes back to this spirit of conservation, if I can save one hedgehog or frog it makes a difference. Pringle said, “Growing up I fell asleep each night listening to frogs call and here that doesn’t happen, you don’t see them so often, so I like to help them when I can.” Pringle also supports animal shelter Mutts in Distress providing veterinary treatment for dogs it rescues from local pounds which would otherwise be destroyed. She particularly enjoys helping dogs which have suffered wilful neglect. She helps them recover and gets them ready to find new homes. Pringle received her award at IFAW’s prestigious Animal Action Awards event, hosted by Baroness Anita Gale and presented by TV wildlife presenter Bill Oddie at the House of Lords. Robbie Marsland, UK director of IFAW said, “Helen is a great example of a vet willing to go above and beyond to help animals big and small. Her dedication to conservation is inspirational and she isaverydeservingwinnerofIFAW’sVet of the Year Award.”

What’s on 6 November The Du Bois Gallery will be hosting an art exhibition at the Kloof Spar shopping mall from Wednesday 6 November to Sun-
Welcome to Thelema Thelema, which was originally an orchid, was bought by Gyles Webb in 1983. The dilapidated fruit trees were pulled out and vines were planted. The manor house was restored and the first wines under the Thelema label were released in 1988. The ripe pure-fruited wines were a revelation to many and it wasn't long before the romantic tale of a run-down old fruit farm became the success story of an avant-garde winery. By the mid 90's Thelema's wines sold out within a month after release, making it one of the most sought-after wine estates in South Africa.
Sauvignon Blanc 2013 This wine was developed for two years. A typical Thelema Sauvignon Blanc with a lovely fresh melon and grapefruit flavours, with a full, grassy palate, all in perfect balance. Enjoy this wine as an apertif, or with delicately flavoured foods like salads, oysters, scallops and chicken.

Recycled trash used to make park benches KALISHA NAICKER

ITH a few trash bins full of discarded bottles, tops and plastic bags from around Durban, Karen Maiden and her team at Ecology Plastics crafted park benches, which she donated to the Keep Hillcrest Beautiful Association Drop off Centre last week. Maiden took the opportunity to remind residents that sustainability efforts are vital in the community and one should always be eco-friendly and recycle. “Hillcrest residents are so lucky that they have this drop off centre right at their doorstep and I urge them to use it,” she said. “It is a sad fact that only nine per cent of all recyclable material in our country is used. We at Ecology Plastics want this to change.” Maiden said that there are many items that can be made from recyclable plastics. “We make garden chairs, tables, and tons of outdoor furniture,” she said. “We decided to donate these benches

to KHBA for the sterling effort they are doing in the community.” Marge Mitchell who spearheaded the drop off centre (recycling centre) welcomed the donation. “It is always good to see that the efforts of the KHBA is noticed,” she said. Mitchell added that the site is meant for serving a need in the community and is extremely well supported. “The material collected amounts to around 30 tons a month and is helping DSW fulfil its obligations with regard to waste going to the landfill site,” she added. However, Mitchell reiterated that the site only collects glass bottles, paper, cardboard, cans, and polystyrene. She urged residents not to bring windscreens, plate glass, crockery, tyres, hosepipes, paint cans, garden refuse as those belong at the Shongweni Landfill Site. “I am urging the community to use the centre responsibly.” Tofindoutmoreaboutthecentreorthe KHBA association, contact Marge Mitchell on 083 419 3807 or Jean Jooste 082 895 0540.

Pupils make a difference KALISHA NAICKER HILLCREST High School Interact pupils, Kyra-Ché Morell and Emily Goode, delivered tins filled with small change to the Kloof SPCA last week after spearheading the Change Cans project at school. Manager of the SPCA, Barbara Patrick, said that schools participating in this promotion made a significant difference to the SPCA. Ever since the devastating fires earlierthisyearthatcausedextensive damage at the Kloof SPCA, the pupils have made it their mission to assist the organisation where they can by collecting clothing and other saleable goods to replace those that were destroyed in the fire. Petticoat Lane, as the second shop is called at the SPCA lost most of its valuable stock in the fire. Teacher in charge of Interact at Hillcrest High, Lesley Moffatt said she was extremely proud of the girls and those who had assisted them for caring so deeply about the SPCA’s plight.

PPER Highway fishing brothers Brett andDarylBartho-stalwartsofDurban’s surfskicommunity-wereallsmilesafter Friday evening’s race two of the 2013 Illovo Suncoast Wall and Back Surfski Series. A combination of their vast experience of the ocean and rare blemishes from some of their fellow elite stars saw them claim the top and bottom step on the podium while Brett's wife, Danica, claimed second place in the ladies’encounterbehindNikkiRussell, rounding out the Bartho trio's podium sweep. Having paddled for numerous years and previously enjoyed the status of ‘the ones to beat’, particularly in the surfski community, the pair have spent the past few years in the paddling wilderness as they put all their time and effort into launching their family fish business – Bartho’s Fish Co.
However, a recent return to their loved sport has sparked excitement amongst many and Friday evening’s performance proved why. “I was pretty tired coming into the race after packing fish since 3am in the morning but when I got out pretty cleanly and saw where I was in the field I thought there may be a small chance I could do well. “NeverdidIeverthinkthatI’dendupwinning though!” said Bartho. “It’s been quite some time since I last won a race so yeah, I’m pretty stoked! “I think the extra distance I had in the arms from Fish definitely helped out there tonight but I’m still struggling from a bit of tendinitis so things are slowly coming back for me, the win – well that was just one hell of a bonus!” he added.
