T has been more than a decade since Sister Rita Naidoo of Life Westville Hospital’s cardiac rehab unit was diagnosed with breast cancer. However, today she is cancer free and loving life. Naidoo uses her experience to offer hope to those affected by the disease. Due to her inspiring stories, she was awarded the American Cancer Society’s International Relay for Life Hero of Hope Award in 2011. Naidoo was diagnosed with breast cancer in December 2002, at the age of 33. “The news that I had cancer was shattering,” she said. “When you a nursing sister you do not see yourself being a patient and being treated by your colleagues.” With her entire life ahead of her Naidoo experienced many emotional stages before she finally reached acceptance and came to terms with the fact that she had this disease. “Being diagnosed with cancer, you do not know what to feel, you become an emotional wreck. “However, one can either become a victim of the disease or become an inspiration. I chose to be an inspiration and fight for survival.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

ITHfinalexamsaroundthe corner the Upper Highway communityisurgedtorally together and offer support to the class of 2014. According to teacher Bavani ChettiarofKloofHigh, thecommunity has a vital role to play in terms of supporting pupils. “Exams are the final phases of a school year and pupils want to end on a high note,” she said. “The community needs to keep noise levels down, offer support to pupils and try to keep distractions to a minimum.” She added that parents need to be a support system for their children. “During exams there are a lot of stress and pressure that pupils undergo and parents need to be there for their children,” she said.

Chettiar urged parents to look for tell-tale signs of extreme stress and suicidal tendencies, and refer childrentotheschoolorcrisiscarefacilities for assistance. Belinda Frank a grade 10 pupil asked with the community to be considerate during exams. She said a major disturbance is the loud music and fireworks during Diwali and Guy Fawks. “It is very hard to concentrate after huge bangs rattle my ear drum. I understand the significance of the celebrations, but I appeal to anyone who is celebrating to keep noise levels to a minimum,” she said. Spokesperson for Hillcrest SAPS Lieutenant France Mkhize said that police will also be extra vigilant during examinations. “There should be no playing or loud music after 10pm on weekdays and 12pm on weekends. We will also be on the lookout for those disturb-

ing the peace,” he added. Mkhize wished the class of 2014 all the best for exams. Chettiar offered tips to achieve good results in the final examinations of 2014. “Pupilsneedtopreparewellinadvance to reduce the stress of exams. They should make use of a study timetable and develop revision techniques which suit them,” she said. “There are many ways to revise and they don't all work for everyone, but revising methodically and calmly is the best way to study, as opposed to a panicked cram session the night before an exam. Pupils must also find a balance between studying and socialising. While studying is important, it's also important that they take regular breaks, engage in physical activity and eat regular and nutritious meals so they do not succumb to the pressure of exams.”

Sarah Futter, who lives on Pine Lane, said she has been extremely frustrated with the inconvenience. “We are not able to function normally when there isn’t water and on my road, it has been quite irregular,” she said.

Let’s purge Kim-Jong-Phiyega >> The few good cops that are left deserve for Phiyega to step down and a real officer to be in charge.

JONATHAN ERASMUS

O

UR police service is in crisis — butyoualreadyknewthat. And police commissioner Riya Phiyega must be fired — but you knew that too. Our “beloved” SAPS, much like North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un, has bunny-hopped from one controversy to another. If it was not fired police commissioner Bheki Cele’s alleged “shoot to kill” comments or his finger in the multi-billion rand rental deal with property magnate Roux Shabangu, it is current commissioner Riya Phiyega’s handling of the Marikana massacre or, as we learnt this week — her unhinged purge of Durban top cop Johan Booysen. And how can one forget about convicted fraudster and one time commissioner Jackie Selebi?

Much like Jong-Un who controls his state with fear and death, our police leadership has become increasingly secretive and militaristic, run by self-serving, spineless leaders. But it is the recent fiasco of the release of the latest police crime statistics that should be setting off alarm bells throughout civil society. KZN’s figures needed to be re-releasedbecauseofmassiveanomalies, the most obvious being the apparent theft of livestock in areas as built up as Westville and the Point or the less obvious such as the horrendously high number of sexual crimes, which skyrocketed by as much as 2 500% in some precincts. And then of course there was the ludicrous, such as one car reportedly stolen — in an entire 12-month period — in Richards Bay, the province’s third largest town. The initial figures were released on 19 September with KZN and Limpoposhowingmassivechanges. After vigourously denying any fault by Phiyega and police minister Nathi Nhleko the “corrected” statistics were released last Tuesday. What this little exercise revealed to us is how easily the statistics can be changed

and manipulated. But that, too, you knew already. What it did show us, with proof, is that the national police leadership can alter data to suit certain needs. This is frightening. We have a police service whose leaders cannot be trusted. We live in a time when the numbers are constantly being questioned. This is part of being in a vibrant democracy. Questioning makes this country a better place. But we have a government that has proven itself time and again to pay lip-service to oversight, but seldom giving it any real power, much like Jong-Un’s parliament. And sadly this is becoming our culture. In a time where South Africans enjoy the greatest freedom ever we are becoming a citizenry practising selfcensorship.Ihavehadseveralexperiences whereby I phone a government official to ask for assistance on understanding an issue. But it is when they find out I am a journalist that they refer me to their communication department. This is usually followed with the line “I could lose my job if I talk to you. It is against departmental

policy to talk to the press”. How did we get to this? How did we get to a space where arrogance triumphs over the rights of the people to be informed? Why is it that the state views itself as the paternal grandfather of all and thinks South Africans cannot deal withinformationofasensitivebutimportant nature? Our state treats us like children yet it is us — the mob — who gives them power. The police have changed the yellow Caspers to white, but it is still a force deep in the murky waters of the political lake. It has shown itself incapable of transforming from a force to a service. We are told there are many “good cops” but then one must ask where are they? Why have we let a cabal of sycophants wrestle control of the most important service in a country? Massive reform is needed in the police. If Nhleko wants to make his markthetimeisnowandhecanbegin withgettingridofPhiyegaandputting a real officer in charge. Let’s hope Nhleko knows what to do.

run any team off their feet, even the All Blacks. We might see a recurrence of this glorious spectacle, but Meyer must first select Lambie as his primary flyhalf. This will allow Lambie to develop further and join the ranks of the iconic flyhalves this game has produced. And with Lambie organising and dictating our backline play, I bet SA will win the 2015 World Cup.

I REFER to the column by Sibusiso Biyela, entitled “Where logic and reason fail.” I have seen people delivered from drugs, alcohol and cigarettes when they realise how much God loves them. I have been healed of migraines after 20 years and have received other healings too. Scientists are often proven to be wrong as time passes. Some scientists andunbelievershavebecomebelievers in Jesus, whilst trying to prove the Bible to be wrong. Josh Mcdowell, Carl Baugh, Dr Grady McMurty, Bruce Malone and others are examples. No one has evidence that humans ‘evolved’ from apes. If we had, why are there still apes today? The Bible mentions dinosaurs/leviathan 11 times. So besides their skeletons deposited during the flood, there are shell fossils up in the mountains to prove the Bible is true. My husband had a bleeding ulcer some years ago when we were on holiday at Ficksburg. Friends prayed with him and we got medication for him. He would not go to hospital, so I drove him home the following day. He refused to have blood transfusions then, but had three pints and an iron infusion three weeks later. Tests could not reveal where the blood loss had occurred! The ulcer healed and there was no scar. Signs, wonders and miracles are still occurring today.

Lambie is the man of the hour “COMETHthehour, comeththeman.’’ This came to mind when I saw on Saturday how one player, Patrick Lambie, changed the complexion of an otherwise boring rugby game. ALLAS Oberholzer believes a skateboard is the perfect vehicle to grease the wheels of change. One at a time, he is nurturing championsfromasmallvillageinthe heart of the Valley of 1000 Hills. Inspired by nature’s lush rolling hills and the rich Zulu culture, Oberholzer, who lives in Morningside founded the Indigo Skate Camp at Isithumba rural village in 2001. He is uplifting members of the community through his love and passion for skateboarding. A professional skateboarder with 25 years’ experience, Oberholzer (39) said while he was studying in Pi-

etermaritzburg, heusedtodrivepast a sign reading “Valley of 1 000 Hills” and was intrigued by the name. When Oberholzer finally got to visit the area he was blown away. “I discovered the small community of Isithumba and found amazing people. I have travelled the world and have been to over 40 countries, but I have a great fascination with Zulu culture. I love their calm demeanour.” The man who first got onto a skateboard at the age of 11 said he wanted to share his knowledge about skateboarding. “Skateboarding is all about discovering and experiencing new terrain so I started looking for places in KZN to introduce skateboarding to

and I remembered the Valley of 1 000 Hills. I went to the village and spoke to the neighbours, headmen, chiefs and the municipality and I was given the land,” he said. Oberholzer said the community was so taken by his ambition and drive that he constructed a well equipped skate park. “We wanted to create leaders and teach children to skate as well as to sustain the project. Through skating children learn from one another,” said Oberholzer. He said today the camp boasts the title of being one of the largest skate parks on the continent. “I wanted to skate in nature, next to the rivers and trees. I wanted to share my knowledge with children. I wanted the children to know that

they could dream big and become better than their circumstances,” said Oberholzer. The five-day camp runs throughout the year. Children are taught Englishimprovementskills, technology and music and dance. The elders from the village have also found employment by assisting Oberholzer construct skate parks all over the country. “We have five permanent staff, trained over 40 children and have extended the programme to the Western Cape, in the Cape Flats. “We are nurturing champions and we are using skateboarding as a vehicle to bring about change. Welcome to Painted Wolf FOUNDED by Jeremy and Emma Borg, and drawing inspiration from the African Wild Dog, the Painted Wolf pack is a community of talented individuals who bring the best grapes, artistic and technical skills to Painted Wolf wines. They produce wines with a distinctive South African feel, and to that end focus largely on wines crafted from Chenin Blanc and Pinotage - the two bench mark South African grape varieties. The grapes are sourced from their pack members vineyards, which are low yielding, mostly un-irrigated and farmed organically or with minimal non organic inputs.

APPY Days Pre-primary in Kloof organised an annual charity fashion show and this year’s benefitting charity was Headway Natal. According to the principal, Moira Ford, the fashion show has two purposes – one, to raise money for a worthy cause and two, to give pupils theopportunityofworkingtogetherin the build-up to the event and then to appear on stage. The show is performed for the Grade R pupils at St Mary’s and Thomas More, many of whom are past pupils of Happy Days, to the parents and to grandparents who enjoy tea and snacks after the show. It is a fun event and the children are made aware that they are raising money for those less fortunate. The school thanks clothing ranges Kalahari Kids and Mia and Leah for providing the clothes for the models to wear. Headway Natal is a non-profit organisation that assists brain injury

Knee Injuries

T

he knee is a hinge joint between the femur (thigh bone) and tibia (main shin bone). Four ligaments hold these two bones together. On each side of the joint there is a ligament joining the femur and the tibia - the medial and lateral collateral ligaments which prevent sideways movement of the lower leg. The other two ligaments lie within the knee joint running diagonally between the femur and the tibia from front to back. These two ligaments prevent the forward and

backward movement of the lower leg in relation to the thigh and are called the cruciate ligaments. In addition to these ligaments there are two crescent shaped cushions (menisci) within the knee joint. All of these structures contribute to the stability of the knee joint. Injury to the collateral ligaments is usually caused by a sideways force, often accompanied with a twisting of the lower leg, a common injury in contact sports. The anterior cruciate ligament is injured more often than the posterior cruciate ligament. Injury is usually caused by a movement such as a fall, twisting, quick changes of direction whilst running or rapid deceleration. There is often a ‘popping’ sound, immediate swelling and a feeling of giving way in the knee. Meniscus injuries in the athlete are usually caused by a twisting movement on a bent knee. Symptoms include sudden pain felt deep in the

RESIDENTIAL estates and townhouse complexes have mushroomed over the past few years and range in size from around 40 units to huge developments of thousands. “Unfortunately crime syndicates often target lifestyle estates,” says Martin Kriel, managing director of ADT Security’s East Coast region. “Criminals are cunning and have been known to abuse contractors and service providers’ confidence to gain information about measures taken to secure the estate. Armed with this information, and their own reconnaissance, they find ways to gain access to estates.” • Estatesecuritycompaniesregularlyevaluatehowtheirservicescanbeimprovedbutresidents are also able to play a part. • Don’t rely on perimeter security alone. Perimeter security is a good way to deter crime, but precautions in the home are necessary.

Lock doors and windows and ensure vehicles are locked even if parked in a garage. Do not leave valuables lying around, particularly where they may be visible to passers-by. • Report suspicious behaviour. Crime syndicates could use a home in the estate as a base from which to monitor residents’ behaviour, plan and execute their activities and then move out. If you note any suspicious behaviour, vehicles or activities, report them to the complex management or security. • Be alert when entering and exiting the estate. We do tend to relax and let down our guard the closer we get to home. The reality is just because there is a security officer at the gate does not mean you can be complacent. If you notice anything suspicious atthegatedon’tdrivethroughimmediately, but stop a safe distance away, and immediately contact the South African Police Service or the security company.

joint and possible swelling. The medical meniscus is often involved with a medial collateral ligament injury as these two structures are joined. With all knee injuries, the most important thing to remember is RICE : Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. It is important to get your injury assessed by a qualified medical professional, like your physiotherapist. Your physiotherapist will assess the severity of your injury and refer if required (as surgery is sometimes required). Physiotherapists play a major role in treatment and rehabilitation of knee injury. Rehabilitation after an injury is important to regain agility and strength to prevent further injury after returning to sport. Juli-Ann Riley (BSc Physiotherapy, Stellenbosch)

Complaints about bad service at Hillcrest station are taken to Parliament

DOSSIER on alleged mismanagement and ineptitude at the Hillcrest police station is going all the way to Parliament — and the station’s commander is to be called there to explain the situation. As one police officer told Fever’s sister publication The Witness of a

“morale crisis”, some local neighbourhood watch groups said they were so angry with late responses and botched investigations that they were refusing to deal with the station at all. Although the town has been hit by a crime spike over the winter, new crime statistics show that most residential crimes in Hillcrest dropped by about 20% in the past financial year.

Station spokesman Lieutenant Frans Mkhize said this showed that the 177 station members were doing a good job. He denied allegations of poor service, and said administrative staff were often placed on foot patrols to assist with crime prevention. But critics, like ward councillor Rick Crouch, alleged the lower figures reflected both “fudged numbers” and “an unwritten policy to

avoid opening cases”, as well as the fact that many victims of crime had “given up the effort” of opening cases in Hillcrest. By contrast, the tiny prefab police station in neighbouringKloof—withfewerthan20staff, andnotoilet—hasdrivenadramatic drop in serious crimes, and its charge office is now attracting Hillcrest-based complainants, who say they get “a decent service” there. Giniel de Villliers has his eyes set on the 2015 Dakar rally.

Merc, BMW — keeping it simple AUTOMAKERS Mercedes-Benz and BMW want to sell more “standard” cars and services to boost profits by simplifying the complex list of options while also offering upmarket extras if they’re wanted. The move is partly aimed at attracting customers who might struggle with the growing list of model variants, multimedia features and safety technology available in new cars. Ian Robertson, formerly with BMW SA but now BMW Germany’s board member responsible for sales and marketing, said the new 4 Series coupé was being offered with four trim choices and the i8 hybrid sports car in only “We have packaged a number of trim levels to help the customer and ourselves because the complexity was very high. Clearly understood was the M sport package,” Robertson said, referring to cars equipped with the performance luxury trim that comes with fancier bumpers and spoilers and top-end engines. Standardising equipment also helps

the market to gauge the second-hand value of a car. Robertson said: “It helps customers to understand what is available. That also helps with the residual values of the car and therefore the leasing rates.” Standardisation is also a response to the polarisation of customers’ tastes in various countries. He added that BMW had, for example, stopped proactively offering manual transmission versions of its sports cars in markets such as the U.S. and tended to push all-wheel drive versions in markets such as Austria where snow is normal in winter. Mercedes-Benz is also looking at ways to strike a balance between standard and custom-build. Ola Kaellenius, head of sales for Mercedes-Benz, said: “There are two approaches - you build to order or you build to stock. In Germany the classic approach is to build to order but in the US the dealer orders the cars and waits for customers to drive them out of the showroom.” BMW 4 Series. PHOTO: SOURC ED

gineers, in compliance with the strict rules set out by the Dakar Rally organisers. Toyota Motorsport SA team principal Glyn Hall said: “Even though we have generous sponsors, the South African team is competing with its budget in rands, against international teams that have millions of U.S. dollars or euros behind them. Hall emphasises that conditions on the Dakar are extreme, each driver/navigator team being confined in a small space that goes up to 50°C in the South American desert heat, with each of them consuming up to seven litres of fluids a day – and still running the risk of dehydration. The logistics supporting the team are tremendous, says Toyota, with the team travelling with nearly nine tonnes of spare parts, tools and equipment to support the two race Hiluxes, which are packed into 78 containers for transport from Kyalami to the start of the event – and then to each stopover during the two-week race. Furthermore, the team takes its own water to the event, makes its own ice, and sterilises all the racers’ equipment every night. “Navigators only get the next day’s route the night before each stage and teams could still have to drive 400km to get to the start. There’s one rest day for the drivers but the mechanics and crew are working 24/7 for the duration of the event. “The Dakar truly is a remarkable test of man and machine.” ThenextDakarRallywillrunfromJanuary 4-17. 2015. The C4 Picasso. THE C4 Picasso was launched in South Africa in June and is available in two derivatives — Seduction and Intensive. The car is powered by a 1.6 e-HDi 115 turbodiesel good for 85kW/270Nm and it’s mated to a six-speedmanualgearbox.Itreaches 100km/h in 11.8sec and has a claimed top speed of 190km/h. The biggest highlight about this car is probably its self-parking function. You select the auto-park function and drive slowly - less than 20km/h – as the car scans and measures a suitableparkingspace.Onceitdoes, select the direction to park from i.e. by indicating left or right or into a parallel bay, select reverse and the car will steer itself into the selected bay automatically. You have to drive slow and if you reach the end of the car park, the camera stops scanning for a suitable bay and you have to reverse or drivearoundagainandstartallover however, the car might stall and then you have to start the whole process all over. Citroën claims a combined fuel consumption of four litres/100km. It’s safe to say this car daintily sips fuel rather than guzzles it. It averages about 6.3-litres/100km on the open road or 16.8km/litre on urban and rural roads.

The growing number of model variants and the expanding range of trim, safety and multimedia options have, however, led Mercedes to simplify some of its offerings into brand packages. Mercedes digital connectivity and some customer interactionswithservicinganddealershippersonnel are now being bundled under the “MercedesMe” brand. Customers who prefer to go through the detailed specification list before ordering Mercedes will be able to call on a member of staff dedicated to this services. Kaellenius explained: “We now have a product concierge, comparable to a product genius in an Apple computer store, whose only job is to help customers understand the car before buying it, to take care of them during delivery, and to be available after the sale. “Mercedes has a breathtaking pace of offering new innovations. We want to ensure that customers can un34 Underwood derstand it all. Despite the digital tools, you still need the human touch.”

The space in this car rates topnotch. The rear row is spacious and comfortable with trays that can flip down for the kiddies or for passengers to keep items such as cellphones or even use as desk space to work on. Both front seats have massage functions. The C4 Picasso’s facia is clutterfree and the two monitors displays all the controls re: air-conditioning, car and audio settings. There’s even a calculator and full calendar and you can upload personal photos and set it as desktop wallpaper. For driver and front passenger, the driver seat can’t go much lower and the steering wheel should be builtsothatitcanreachfurtherback into the dash. The Seduction version will set you back R325 900. It comes with a three-year or 100 000km warranty, five-year or 100 000km service plan, three years of 24-hour roadside assistance while the warranty can be extended to five-years or 100 000km. There’s also an optional Citroën Freedrive plan - a five-year or 100 00km warranty and a five-year or 100 000km maintenance plan. IVE-TIME world champion Hank McGregor flew into Durban on Wednesday morning after becoming the first South African paddler to clinch the singles and doubles world crowns at the ICF Canoe Marathon World Championships. A jet lagged McGregor was greeted by supporters, his wife Pippa and baby son Thorsten, andhismother,allwearingT-shirtscelebrating his achievements. "I have now achieved everything that I pretty much desired to achieve in marathon racing," said McGregor. He said it had been tough to race the K2 race after a grueling K1 race the day before, but he andhispartnerJasperMockéhadbeenbuoyed by a key moment on the second lap of the race. "We put in a big surge and we were so dominant in that surge we both grew in confidence," he said. "From then we just played out of our boots

and managed to get the gold medal." He added that his shift in strategy on the portages had caught his competitors offguard. "Ihavebeenbattlingwithacalfinjuryforthe past two months and was sceptical about being able to do what people expect me to do - run really well on the portages. "I think the other guys were expecting me to make a big move on the final portage, but I held back on the paddle leg and decided to leave it all on the water at the end. I think the others ran too hard on that portage to be honest, and when we jumped back in I think they were pretty much spent but I was still really surprised that I managed to open up such a big gap in the end-sprint. “I was overwhelmed with emotion coming intothefinishline-yourwholebodygoesnumb with excitement.” ForanyfurtherinformationgototheCanoeing South Africa website atwww.canoe sa.org.za

Huge prize pool for Umpetha Challenge FEVER REPORTER

ORGANISERS of the Dusi-season starting Umpetha

Challenge canoe race on Sunday 19 October have confirmed a massive prize pool of R36 000 for the race,withR6000fortheoverallwinneroftheK1category. The2015DusiCanoeMarathona K1 championship race, the KwaZulu-Natal summer season is being geared towards the K1 class, and as the first Dusi seeding race of the season, the Umpetha Challenge will see a heavy skew towards K1 paddlers. The R36 000 prize pool is a 12,5% increase on last year's prize money, and being targeted at K1 craft rather than last years K2 craft, the potential for individual elite athletes to secure excellent prizes for their performances is significant. The organisers have stressed however that K2 paddlers, and perhaps even a brave K3 or two, will be welcome at the race.

A week after the Hansa Fish, the Umpetha Challenge will suddenly shift the focus from traditional river marathons to the unique demands of the Dusi season, with tough portages key to the elite athletes chances of success. The race, entirely run and administered by the NCC Development Team with solid support from theKwaZulu-NatalDepartmentofSportandRecreation is designed to focus attention on the upcoming Dusi, and the season of qualifiers and seeding races that lead to the three day marathon in mid-February. "The support from the KZN Department of Sport and Recreation not only ensures that we can run a top class race, but also allows us to offer very good prize money incentives to the top paddlers, male and female, seniors and juniors," said race committee head Thuthukani Manyathi. The Umpetha Challenge takes place from Camps Drift to Bishopstowe Hall on Sunday 19 October.
