Sci-fi novel set in Durban STEPH MCLENNAN

>>steph.mclennan@media24.com

WHEN writing and being imaginative comes as naturally as breathing, as they do to local author Julianne Alcott, miraculous and monstrous things are born. From planets that rain rocks to aliens and cellphones which enable their users to move through space and time, The Ripmender has it all. The book introduces us to Cathy Slater, an ordinary girl studying in Durban. The only thing that keeps her going is her crush on American rock star Nathan Jake. A series of events, some carefully planned by Slater and others, which come as terrifying, cataclysmic surprises, leads to small-town-girl and rock star embarking on a whirlwind of adventures through the universe. JEFF WICKS CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 TWO Chinese nationals arrested for the record R3 billion Kloof drug seizure last week made frequent trips to Asia as well as other African countries. The information comes as detectives from across the country probe any links to the international drug cartel which had been operating out of one of Durban’s premier suburbs. A break in the investigation came last week when a crack team of detectives identified the internationalsyndicate’skingpinandotherkey players. The 10-ton haul of narcotics seized on Tuesday has now been identified by police forensic investigators as methaqualone, the base ingredient of Mandrax. According to a well-placed police source, who could not be named as he is not authorised to speak to the press, the two men, understood to be chemists in the drug ring, made frequent international trips. “What we know is that the two Chinese suspects made repeated trips to and from China and crossed the borders into other African states,” he said. The source added that an examination of records held by border control agencies had been one of the first stops for detectives. “One of the aims of the team was to find out how these guys had come into the country and also how they had managed to get all this sophisticated equipment and dangerous chemicals through our ports,” he added. It is understood that law enforcement agencies across the globe were assisting South African investigators with their probe. The source said that the suspects, who remain in custody ahead of their formal bail ap-

Man electrocuted on Inanda Road FEVER REPORTER

A man sustained severe burns after he came into contact with a high voltage cable along Inanda Road in Hillcrest on Thursday afternoon. According to Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha, the man came into contact with an exposed cable at aroadconstructionsite andwaselectrocuted. “Netcare 911 paramedics stabilised the man at the scene before he was transported to a hospital in Durban for the specialised care that he required,” he said. The matter is still under investigation.

plication next week, had made several entries into other African countries. He said that this served to give an impression of the potential scale of the drug operation and the size of the network. Using swathes of evidence gathered atthesceneandinformationfromthequestioningofthreegangunderlingswhowerearrested in the raid, detectives compiled extensive suspect profiles. The principal player is understood to be a South African whose arrest is imminent. It is further understood that the other high-level syndicatebosshasskippedthecountryandhas sought refuge from law enforcement agencies in China. The cartel’s epicentre, a hi-tech lab in the leafysuburbofKloof,Durban, isbeingcarefully dismantled by an army of forensic detectives and chemical disposal experts flown in from across the country. The record value of the sting remains set at R3 billion and may rise when detectives weigh the entire sum of raw product at a well-protected laboratory. Police initially reported that the cache of drugs was heroin, but preliminary testing on several samples indicated that it is the primary constituent of Mandrax. Policearealsosearchingfortheownerofthe house,JunaidRasool(24)whoboughtitinApril for R3,8 million. He is expected to be questioned in relation to the goings-on at the plush pad. The expansive property, set in the thicket of gum trees, appears to have been carefully chosen by the international syndicate. The drug ring had used water sourced from aboreholeandgeneratorstoprovideelectricity to avoid a spike in usage on the city’s grid that would have aroused suspicion. The clean-up operation at the house is expected to continue for most of the week.

H

UMAN beings, it seems, are a gullible bunch. Given time, we begin to believe that using a certain brand of shampoo makes us “worth it”; that canned vegetables truly are “the best we can do”, and that, as people who can afford expensive running shoes, we should “just do it”. Our tendency to fall for marketing strategies is all well and good until desperation gets the better of us. This is when we start believing that the weight-loss soap at China Mall is the answer to our caloriecounting woes and that the latest

skincare product will remove the wrinkles that the last 20 creams have failed to fill. Those in the dating game are well-versed in the fact that if something, or someone, seems too good to be true, they invariably are. On the other side of the coin, she may only be interested in you because of the deafening gong of her biological clock or her desire to give up work, become a Desperate Housewife, and spend her days languishing by your pool, hopefully not frolicking with the gardener. Thanks to the Satinsky saga,

many South Africans have just got up close and personal with the fact thatsomethingthatseemstoogood to be true, invariably is. The glorified pyramid scheme-like structure set up in Hong Kong and exported to South Africans struggling to stay afloat has crumbled, leaving thousands of our folk up the metaphorical creek with no paddle. A new Nissan Micra or Renault Sandero costs at least R2500 per month. If someone tells you that it costs R599, you can now be sure that it was too good to be true. What tickles me pink is that the driveanewcar.co.za website is still up and running, even in the light of recent epiphanies. The other sad fact is that there are many unscrupulous individuals who will take advantage of the

Theevent-whichincluded ahotmeal, cupcakes, popcorn, face-painting, a jumping castle, bubbles and goodie boxes - allowed them to escape from reality foramorningandallowedthemtobe children by playing and laughing.

Each child went home with a bag filled with food, toiletries, treats and a brand new school uniform. According to Kim Griffith Jones, co-ordinator of the Robin Hood Foundation, the new school uniform is the highlight of the experience as it enables them to attend school with pride. “I am always blown away by the appreciation and delight in receiving their new uniform. It means so much to each child,” said Jones. The foundation thanked Quirky Queens, the ICC staff, Pot and Kettle, the Union of Jewish Women and a number of individuals for making it a memorable event and for giving much needed hope. For more details, contact Kim Griffith Jones on 076 612 9060.

A complex nose with appealing roasted citrus aromas and vibrant lime and toasty oak flavours, also revealing nuances of butterscotch with touches of pineapple and white pear. The palate is full and well balanced with rich citrus fruit and a silky thread of coconut milk, subtle oak and a firm acid. Added toastiness emerges on the end-palate and a long-lasting aftertaste makes for a satisfying finish.

The Kymco Super 8 125cc is probably the most polished feeling scooter that Kymco make. It offers the sportiness of the Agility with the comfort of the Like models. The ride has a nice feel to it and the finish on the dash, seat and pipes looks the best out of the range. Incredibly well priced, the Kymco Super 8 has a very nice ride and has excellent handling. The riding position is comfortable and welljudged. You’re not bouncing around on a seat built for comfort, nor are you perched in an unnecessarily hard and sporty position. It’s very much a compromise between the Like and Agility models, making it fun to wiggle around as well as ride in a straight line. It’s easy to U-turn because the power is strong enough to hold you up below eight kilometres. The quality and reliability is the best that Kymco offer. The dash looks stylish and feels very clear and obvious. It’s also pleasantly coloured and designed. The finish on the bike makes it look like a more expensive machine than it is. The Super 8 comes with a two-year warranty. R16500 isn’t much for a solid scooter and the two-year warranty adds peace of mind. As with most 125cc machines it doesn’t take much fuel to keep it going. Very affordable and with the extra finance options that Rhino Motorcycles offer, this makes the model even more affordable.

EN first girls’ hockey teams from around the province are hard at work training for the Spar KZN Regional Hockey Tournament finals at Thomas More College and St Mary’s DSG on 26 and 27 July. Defending champions, Durban Girls’ College are keen to retain the title. The victors of the Durban Central region won medals for twoconsecutiveyears—silverinthe2012tournament and gold last year. The explosive team from Pietermaritzburg, who seem to be the bridesmaids but never the brides, Girls’ High are eager to change this fact and would love a chance to raise the trophy. The champs of the Pietermaritzburg central region won silver in the inaugural tournament in 2011andagainlastyear.The2012tournament saw them get bronze. Tournament director Les Galloway commented: “We are in for a cracker of a tournament this year. Four of the teams participating are in the top 50 schools according to the SA School Sports hockey rankings, so the quality is going to be top-notch.” Another vital ingredient making this tournament such a success is acknowledging the umpires. Ten umpires from around KZN were selected as the most promising umpire at each regional. They have been invited to further

their umpiring skills and be graded at the finals. Sarah Wheeler from Greytown High, representing the Umvoti, uThukela and Umzinyathi region, will be making her fourth appearance at the finals. Other “whistle-blowers” are Tanya Pepler from St Dominic’s Academy (Northern Natal), Donovan Rothman from Southcity Christian College (Sisonke and Ugu), Brett Clay from Crawford College North Coast (Durban North), Enza Magubane from Amanzimtoti High (Durban South), Kylie Ooshuizen from Durban Girls’ College (Durban Central), Vaughn Lees from Thomas More College (Highway), Tarryn Woodroffe from Pietermartizburg Girls’ High (Pietermaritzburg), Nikki Kelbrick from St John’s (Pietermaritzburg) and Wesley Yngdals from Grantleigh College (Zululand). “I am very enthusiastic with how this tournament has grown, and in such a short space of time. It has developed into a tour de force on the school calendar. I look forward to watching the games on the pitch. I wish them luck, and the most important thing to remember is that at the end of the day, hockey is the winner,” said Spar KZN MD, Rob Philipson. For more information or to follow the tournament, “like” the Facebook page Spar KZN Regional Hockey Tournament or follow on Twitter @SPARGirlsHockey.

FEVER REPORTER SIBONELO Makhanya has been named captain of the South African U19 cricket team to tour England from 23 July to 22 August 2014. Makhanya is a product of Durban High and has represented KZN in all the junior age groups over the past five years. He was part of the first SA U19 team to win the ICC U19 World Cup in 2014. Makhanya follows in the footsteps of four SA U19 captains to come from KZN since unity — Rivash Gobind, Hashim Amla, Imraan Khan and Chad Bowes. Makhanya also becomes the first black person to captain a SA U19 team. Andile Phehlukwayo and Lwandiswa Zuma from KZN have also made the SA U19 squad. The KwaZulu-Natal Cricket Union Council and staff congratulate all three players and wish them well on their tour.
