CAN AI ACHIEVE BETTER KNOWLEDGE THAN HUMANS? DUE TO THE CREATION OF AI, HUMANS INCREASINGLY DEPEND ON IT. BUT IS IT SMART ENOUGH TO REPLACE HUMANS?

"INTELLIGENCE" IN THIS CASE CAN BE DEFINED AS THE ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND A WIDE VARIETY OF KNOWLEDGE AND HAVING A GREAT ABILITY TO MEMORIZE.

Yes, they have no limits:

“AI is only limited by its hardware, which is much faster than the human brain. AI can process information billions of times faster than us, enabling it to make decisions quickly.” This causes them to have a much better memory and be able to collect information from sources instantly. This means they do not make calculation errors. Since they are “machines”, they don’t need to rest. This artificial intelligence already exceeds human intelligence by many degrees.

SOURCE 1

SOURCE 2

No, they are machines:

AI does not have emotions. That means it cannot feel as humans can. For example, a beautiful poem will be understood well by humans. On the other hand, AI might just know that it is a poem and that is it. It cannot feel emotions like humans can.

AI only processes the data it receives: AIs can only inform the data that it has, not any others. It would be useless if we entered something that could not be processed in its data.

Endra and I (Sarah) sent out a form before Homecoming to see what people were looking forward to.

WhatareyoumostexcitedaboutatHomecoming?

A majority of the people were most excited to either shop or sell at Vendors Village, and we would agree with this.

Are you sellin anything at Vendors Villag

Many people signed up to se amazing things at Homecoming people were selling items. Whether you were selling something or not, I'm sure we all had a fantastic time!

We both weren't surprised to find out that many people were coming with friends or family. It's nice to know that our HSC community loves to hang out with their family and friends

What charity are you donating to?

(If ' lli g thi g)

We are always happy when we see that people are donating to charity, even if it's mandatory We were mostly expecting to see McMaster Children's Hospital as a favourite, and we ourselves are donating to McMaster

DEMYSTIFYING DEMYSTIFYING GMos GMos

What are GMOs?

A GMO, or genetically modified organism, is any organism whose genetic makeup has been modified using genetic engineering or transgenic technology. This creates combinations of organisms that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods.

Are GMOs bad?

There is a lot of controversy surrounding GMO products. Many people worry, since it can be common for scientists to insert genes from a very different organisms. This raises the risk of allergic reactions to some GMO foods. There's also a possibility of the genetically-engineered foreign DNA spreading to non-GMO organisms. So far, no GMO products approved for consumption have caused any of these problems.

Where can I find GMOs in my life?:

Many foods that you can find at a grocery store have been genetically modified. About 90 percent of the corn, soybeans, and sugar beets are GMOs. Many benefits come from foods that have been genetically modified. GMOs can produce higher yields, have a longer shelf life, are resistant to diseases and pests, and even taste better. This makes food cheaper and ensures fewer pesticides are used. GMO animals are generally used in labs for testing, though animals such as salmon have been genetically modified to mature faster for human consumption. It is ensured that all GMOs go through rigorous testing before becoming a product.

English Corner

Whatis personification?

Personification is taking an inanimate object, like a book for example, and giving it human characteristics to describe something about it. If you were using a creaky door in your writing, you could say something like, “I closed the creaky door as it filled the air with its horrid groan.” You see, a door can’t groan It can’t even talk By assigning that human quality to an inanimate object, such as the door, you are using personification.

Hey, fellow English learners!

This issue’s topic will be personification and when you can use it to boost the quality of your writing.

Whateffectscan personificationhaveon yourpiece?

By using personification you are bringing new depth to your writing. Of course, in the last example, you could have just said that the door was squeaky, but you can see how personifying it made it a lot more interesting.

Personification can also help the reader’s imagination get a more accurate picture about the scene you are trying to set

Malaysian Airlines Flight 370

Malaysian Airlines Flight 370 (MH370) was a scheduled passenger flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing that disappeared March 8, 2014. The plane was never found.

Why did this happen?

There are many theories on why this happened, but I believe the most probable is that Captain Zaharie did it on purpose. Flight simulations on his personal computer at his home showed that he planned the entire flight.

Where did it go?

Satellite and radio signals all show that MH 370 made a crash water landing in the southern Indian Ocean near the coordinates: 33.177°S 95.300°E

Thesearch continues...

Although over 4.5 million km² of ocean was searched for remains, MH370 was never found. The full story has remained a mystery.

"We will Rock You" - Queen

Stomp, stomp, clap, stomp, stomp, clap. Reminds you of that famous song? Well, this is it. This song is an oldie but a goodie. It is a song that was sung near the end of his career, but it is a special one. It didn’t use any piano, and featured limited instruments except for body percussion, a beautiful guitar solo, and drums.

"Flowers" - Miley Cyrus

"Never Gonna Give You Up" - Rick Astley

Well, thank you for listening, but we have one more little surprise of a song. Give it up for the one… the only… … “Never gonna give you up” by Rick Astley!

Yes, the infamous "Rickroll" that many use to trick their friends.

Though, to be honest, this is actually a very decent song and I suggest that you actually take time to listen to the song. Since it is still relevant 36 years later! I’m 12, currently, so that's exactly 3 times my age. And wow, to think that this was only released in 1987; it must make some people feel really old...

This is a new and rising song, with a nice mellow tone start and a big splash of sound. It’s like painting colour onto a picture, a story with feeling. The message is about her love life, and how after a breakup you can get over it and then you can be your own person and don’t need to lean on anyone. It features lots of repetition so it quite easily gets stuck in your head, but that's good because it’s a great song!

"Sunroof" - Nicky Youre

This is a lovely song with beautiful guitar and piano notes. The message is just about living well now, thinking about life and what to do. It's a catchy tune about the artist and his lover just spending their time and their life together. It's also quite upbeat, energetic, and lively.

The Wizard of

The Senior School's production of The Wizard of Oz (April 27-29, 2023) was the first musical they had put on since pre-COVID Everyone hoped it would be a success, and it was. All of the performances were equally wonderful, even when things went awry, like broken or missing props, costume fails, or late appearances. When Scarecrow’s corn cob fell off the stalk, she carried on singing her song and dancing. When a wagon that was the main talking point for several characters didn’t make it on stage, two students (playing Lion and Scarecrow) rose to the occasion with on-the-spot

actors seem as if they really were, from the story. The Jitterbugs glowed in the dark, the witch was actually green, Glinda was a princess on stage, Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Lion were incredible, and the munchkins were absolutely adorable. I heard from a very reliable source that the munchkins all got new accessories, and you could tell that most of the hats were handmade Hats off to these wonderful women, who had to make costumes for four separate productions this year!

Speaking of the munchkins, they managed to pull it off! Their one

improv acting, pretending that the wagon was there and making the audience truly believe that there wasn’t even supposed to be a prop there.

Saturday night saw another adaptable moment on stage: although the Wicked Witch's prosthetic nose fell off while she was onstage, the actress picked it up and carried on flawlessly You wouldn’t have noticed anything if the witch's nose beneath had been painted green! When she came back onstage, she was sadly missing her prosthetic nose, but her real one was painted green Although there were costume fails the women in charge of costumes (The Costume Ladies) truly went above and beyond, making the

big job onstage was to be adorable, and nobody would have really cared if they couldn’t sing or remember the dance. But luckily for us, they managed to do all of these things! You could hear their sweet voices well, even the munchkins who weren’t wearing microphones! They all remembered the dance, and their voices were loud and clear Bravo all around The munchkins were adorable, brilliant singers, good dancers, and great actors You could always find a few with a bright smiles acting and dancing to the part They knew the choreography and lyrics by heart, and some acted exceptionally in their roles While watching, my attention was always quickly drawn to someone who was doing

The main cast was chosen well, with incredible acting skills and amazing voices to back it up Dorothy captured our hearts with “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”, Lion made us laugh in the scariest of moments, Scarecrow (even without a brain) made us think, and Tin Man showed us his heart long before he got one from the Wizard. The less major roles, but still from the main cast, were equally as good. Glinda had superb acting skills, the Wicked Witch was evil in all the right spots, the Door Guard made everyone smile, and the Wizard was well chosen for the role. The production was a smashing success, despite the hiccups.

Although several of our actors and actresses won’t be returning for an encore next year, there will be new people entering the Senior School, eager to take on a part. I truly can’t wait for Senior School’s next musical production, though I’m hoping that I won’t be a spectator next year!

ChatGPT doesn't present any immediate physical risks because it is an AI language model It's crucial to be aware of these risks and to take the necessary precautions to reduce them. Users should utilize ChatGPT with caution and critical thought, and developers of AI models like ChatGPT have a duty to make sure their models are reliable, truthful, and impartial. However, there are some possible dangers connected to its use, such as

Disseminating false information:

ChatGPT is capable of producing responses that aren't always accurate or factually true. Users run the risk of disseminating false information if they rely only on

the data provided by ChatGPT without independently confirming it

Bias: ChatGPT, like any AI model, can only be as objective as the data it was trained on. It's possible that ChatGPT's responses will also reflect any biases present in the training data. This can result in harmful discrimination or stereotypes being reinforced or amplified

ChatGPT may capture and keep user data, which raises questions about data security and privacy. Users should exercise caution when providing ChatGPT with sensitive information, and developers should include suitable safeguards to protect user data

Addiction and over-dependence: Some users may develop an addiction to or excessive reliance on ChatGPT, depending on it to make critical decisions without appropriate human input or utilizing it as a replacement for human connection.

What is the International day against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia?

The International day against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia or IDAHOBIT was launched in 2004 to commemorate the day in 1990 when the World Health Assembly of the World Health Organization no longer listed homosexuality as a mental illness. This day is recognised to celebrate the 2SLGBTQIA+ communities and our progress with inclusion while still raising awareness for the work still needing to be done.

THE HUNGER GAMES MOVIE REVIEW

MollyMa,704

The Hunger Games is an exciting movie that follows Katniss Everdeen, 16, as she volunteers to take her sister's place in The Hunger Games, a struggle to the death between two tributes from each of Panem's 12 districts. The plot is filled with action, drama, and tension as Katniss fights for her life while handling the politics of the games and the larger society of Panem. She establishes allies, suffers betrayals, and learns about the power of love and the value of standing up to oppression along the way. Viewers are taken on a fascinating journey that examines significant subjects such as economic class inequity, political corruption, and the environment through vivid descriptions and engaging characters.

In my opinion, Jennifer Lawrence expressed every vivid emotion and tension Katniss faced---elated feelings when she finally found Peeta, and melancholy emotions when Rue was killed. I personally cannot imagine The Hunger Games without Jennifer Lawrence.

The Hunger Games depicted a dystopian world that showed the contrasting worlds of the rich and poor in the Capitol and the Districts. The people in Capitol dressed in vivid and lavish costumes and make-up which made them look unlike humans. On the other hand, in the Districts, there are people with empty eyes and bones jutting out, having to eat squirrels, etc. This looks like a fantasy movie, but it actually reflected some of our own world. For example, celebrities' expensive clothing and lifestyles are compared to those of most people.

Overall, I would rate this movie a 10/10.

LionelMessi

Hey there, football fans! Today, I want to talk about Lionel Messi, the coolest dude in Argentina when it comes to soccer! He is an amazing player and has done some mind-blowing things on the field. Let's dive into the awesomeness of Messi and his journey in Argentina!

Early Life and Rise to Stardom:

So, Messi was born on June 24, 1987, in Rosario, Argentina He's just a few years older than me! As a little kid, he played soccer on the streets of his hometown and totally rocked it! People saw his crazy talent, and soon he got picked up by local clubs At just 13 years old, he moved to Spain to join FC Barcelona's youth team. Can you imagine being that young and already being a soccer superstar?

Copa America Victory:

Finally, in 2021, Messi and his teammates won the Copa America! Woohoo! It was super exciting because Argentina hadn't won a major tournament for, like, forever Messi was the hero of the final match against Brazil He played soooo well and helped Argentina bring home the trophy It was his dream come true, and the whole country celebrated like crazy!

Inspiring a Nation:

Messi isn't just a soccer player; he's a hero for all of Argentina He's a role model for kids like me who dream of becoming great at soccer. Messi's skills, the way he moves with the ball, it's all so magical. He's made everyone believe that anything is possible if you work hard and follow your passion.

Conclusion:

International Success:

Messi has played for Argentina in big tournaments like the World Cup and Copa America It's a big deal, you know! He's faced a lot of pressure, but he never gave up Sometimes, they didn't win, but that didn't stop Messi from trying his best for his country.

Being Awesome Off the Field:

Did you know Messi is not only a soccer genius, but he's also a kind-hearted dude? He started a foundation to help kids who need support He's done things like building schools and helping kids get access to education and healthcare

It's so cool to see someone using their fame and fortune to make the world a better place

Lionel Messi is like the superstar of our dreams! He's achieved so much and made Argentina super proud He's shown that no matter where you come from, you can reach for the stars and achieve greatness Messi is not just a football player; he's a legend who inspires us all. Keep rocking, Messi, and keep showing the world what you've got!

HEALTH SCHOOLS CERTIFICATION

An amazing year for the Health Action Team as they moved up a level from last year to earn themselves a SILVER Certification from the nationally-recognized program, Healthy Schools Certification Program. The team would like to share some of their key learnings from supporting student Mental

“I have learned that mental health is just as important as your physical health. Our team has been mainly focusing on mental health because sometimes your mental health is overlooked Being on this team and creating a further understanding of your mental wellbeing helped me appreciate all the effort the school has been putting toward your mental health I am very proud of the teamwork I and my peers have developed along the way During the beginning of the year, we weren’t as strong of a team as we are now, and we always remind each other to complete the homework, when a meeting was canceled, and when a meeting was scheduled I have had fun creating assignments with all of them and hope to do so in the future ”

“Something I learned is that you should take care of your mental health and never ignore it I also saw that creating events can be joyful for the students, especially the younger ones. I am most proud of myself for learning new information about mental health and how it's an important subject. I also am proud of myself for working with new people and doing it well ”

“One key thing that I learned from being in this in-school club is that your mental health is no joke and could change you physically and mentally You should always take breaks, listen to some music, and do something to relax your mind instead of making your mind go bonkers What I am most proud of is getting the opportunity to join the Health Action Team along with the other four people Another thing I am proud of is learning so many mental mind twisters and also creating my own which I actually do about twice a week ”

Be mindful of your mental and physical health this summer and comeback in September stronger and healthier than ever!

“Something important that I learned is that you should always take care of your mental health and never neglect it. I also saw that creating fun and joyful events for students often makes their day and brings a positive impact on them. I am most proud of myself for learning lots of new information about mental health I also am proud of myself for working with others and making new friends ”

THE HEALTH ACTION TEAM NEEDS YOU!

Feeling inspired by all the great things the Health Action Team has accomplished this year! Well here’s your chance (2nd chance - actually) to sign up for the HAT 2023-2024! Send Mr. Verbeek - verbeema@hsc.on.ca - an email by June 1st with a short paragraph about why you’d like to join the HAT --- and what initiatives you’d like to see in the Middle School for next year --- to be considered for this student leadership team

Nature Poetry

THE SUMMER

EACH MORNING IS MUSIC

ALLURING AND CAPTIVATING THE WEATHER

WARM, HUMID, AND PLEASANT

THE SHINING SUN, SHIMMERING

LIKE A SPARKLING STAR AT NIGHT

NOT A CLOUD IN SIGHT

ACROSS THE DEEP BLUE SKY FOR AS FAR AS THE EYE CAN SEE MEANWHILE, SPRING

WAKING UP TO APRIL SHOWERS

AND THEN MAY FLOWERS

THE BRIGHT COLOURS OF BLOOMING FLOWERS WITH THE SMELL OF POLLEN FLOATING

ROBINS AND BLUEJAYS CHIRPING AND NO MORE SNOW OR DRY AIR

THERE ARE SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES

AND BOTH ARE MAGNIFICENT

OPENING MY EYES

WAKING UP TO THE PITTER PATTER OF A NEW DAY

LETTING THE SUN HIT MY FACE AS I SIT UP AND LOOK OUTSIDE

WATCHING EACH RAINDROP HIT THE GROUND MAKING ME CALM

I INHALE

I EXHALE

WATCHING THE RAIN THE SUN REFLECTING OFF EACH DROP IN A BLINDING GLARE

I DO NOT LOOK AWAY OR BLINK

I CAN’T

THERE MIGHT NOT BE A SIGHT LIKE THIS AGAIN THE TREES SWAYING CALMLY THE FLOWERS SWAYING CALMLY THE WORLD IS AT PEACE AND SO AM I

The Bird Corner

All birds are beautiful. Can you guess what we will be talking about today? Blue Jays! Blue Jays are obviously blue. They are known for their flashy blue feathers. Blue Jays fly fast, and they are beautiful. You can see them in summer---oh, and by Blue Jays, I don't mean the baseball team!

Blue Jays can be different shades of blue: light blue, dark blue, neon blue, pastel blue, highlighter blue, and many more. Look at this photo to see the differences.
