ALUMNI 101

WELCOME TO HSC’S ALUMNI COMMUNITY

OBJECTIVES OF THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

Graduation doesn’t mark the end of your ties with Hillfield Strathallan College; your status simply changes from student to alumni! With your new title comes new privileges and honours.

The Alumni Association’s primary objectives are to:

The Alumni Association existed before the amalgamation of Hillfield College and Strathallan School in 1969. To date, 70 Alumni Presidents have overseen this active association, which consists of more than 3,000 members and over 100 Class Representatives. The Alumni Association takes pride in bringing the talents and enthusiasm of its members back to HSC to enhance the educational experience of our students.

ALUMNI PROGRAMMING The Alumni Office is located in the Strathallan Building and is ready to support the efforts of a broad range of alumni volunteers. The Alumni Association Executive oversees the HSC Mentor Connect program and awards such as the Alumni Award of Distinction, Hall of Excellence, and the Athletic Hall of Fame. It is also involved in events such as the HSC Alumni Golf Classic, Carol Service Reception, Young Alum Pub Nights, Homecoming, regional reunions and much more!

and alumni programming To put it simply, the Alumni Association ensures that the voices of the alumni are heard by the College and vice versa, representing the College of yesterday and today. The Alumni Association also has a Young Alumni Representative on the Alumni Association Executive (AAE) as a voice for its newest members. CLASS REPRESENTATIVES

THE TRADITION OF CLASS REPRESENTATIVES The selection of Class Representatives for the graduating class is an honoured tradition at HSC. The Alumni Office currently has information on Class Representatives from 1949 forward. Individuals who accept this role are responsible to their class and the College to maintain the link between their fellow alumni and Hillfield Strathallan College.

HSC CLASS REPRESENTATIVES The Head Prefects are automatically nominated to fulfill this role. They will work with the Alumni Association as the Class Representatives. For the Class of 2022, Fola Ayibiowu and Ali Haider are your Class Representatives.

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES Class Representatives will be the voice of motivation and enthusiasm for all alumni events. They will be responsible along with the Alumni Relations Officer for the organization of any casual and/or milestone reunions involving their graduating year. Events such as the HSC Alumni Golf Classic and Homecoming require the Class Representative’s participation as a role model for their class’ attendance.

CLASS NEWS HSC stays connected with its graduates through the HSC Review, Email and social media including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn. Class Representatives will be requested to help obtain up-to-date personal profiles and “good news” stories about their class for these publications.

EXPECTATION Class representatives have been a tradition at HSC and are instrumental in retaining ties between their class and the College. Class Representatives are called upon to assist the College in the location of lost alumni and the planning of their milestone reunion, in addition to various other tasks from time to time.

ALUMNI AWARD OF DISTINCTION GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP THE STEVE KULAKOWSKY ’03 ALUMNI AWARD OF DISTINCTION GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP Steve Kulakowsky ’03 has had a front seat to the dramatic change going on in downtown Hamilton. As co-founder of developer Core Urban Inc., he has spent the last 13 years helping shape urban renewal in the city, largely through the adaptive reuse of heritage buildings, increasing Hamilton’s stock of housing and commercial space. Core Urban has turned a former school into a dramatic, glasstopped condo building, joined two aging commercial buildings to create a mix of residential and street-level storefronts, and remodelled a 19th-century textile factory into an airy and modern office building, among other projects. Steve says he’s proud of his contribution to Hamilton’s resurgence, saying his company

often works in overlooked areas of the core and on challenging projects that many other developers wouldn’t risk. He describes his philosophy as one that looks to create attractive buildings that add to the streetscape and improve the community, as opposed to one that seeks to build the maximum number of units in the most costefficient way possible. “A lot of the time it’s taking old buildings that have been underutilized for years and making something special out of them,” says Steve. “We’ve shown that by building in interesting places, you can attract and retain people from Hamilton and out of town, through buildings that are kind of cool.” To read the full article, visit hsc.on.ca/hscreview2022
