The Final Chapter
Message from the Head of College
Message from the Chair, Board of Governors
To see the spark of an idea become a fire of creativity is what learning with joy is all about. Educators and parents alike understand that when students have opportunities and the space and resources to pursue their passions, they can change their world. Working together in 2015–16, we helped them do just that. One of the strategic accomplishments that makes me feel most proud is the evolution of the David Tutty Joy and Innovation Fund. The breadth and quality of funded projects are remarkable, offering hands-on experience for successful applicants. From completing proposals, to navigating the approval and budgeting process, to finally seeing projects to completion, the fund connects multiple elements of our strategic plan, Towards 20/20, and our mission with the daily experiences of our students, faculty and staff.

Current projects include designwerx, Canada’s first student-run design studio; a solar panel project; and a MakerSpace, where Middle, Montessori and Junior School students collaborate and explore their talents and passions. Through our strategic plan, we fully embraced a culture of innovation, creative thinking and collaboration. This broad and inclusive approach to education sets us apart, and for 2016–17 HSC experienced its highest enrolment College-wide since the “double-cohort” year in 2003, with 1,177 students enrolled for September 2016. We also set a record over the course of the school year with over 300 applications received for 2016–17. To our many donors and volunteers—thank you. Your trust, loyalty and support is nothing short of astounding.
Marc Ayotte Head of College
From the first moment a family visits our campus, through to graduation and beyond, we want all of our parents and students to feel connected to the school and each other. HSC families share an amazing journey—one with many opportunities for learning and growth. The Board is charged with helping to enrich this journey through lasting relationships and connections, and we are deeply grateful to our alumni, friends, students, faculty, staff and board members who generously supported the College during the 2015–16 academic year. The impact of your generosity is reflected in HSC’s accomplishments in 2015–16. In the 10 years my family has been with HSC, I have witnessed our community rally together to accomplish what for most schools would be impossible—the early completion of a massive capital project with a savings of $2 million in construction costs.
While our new facilities are in full use, there is still work to be done. The Board is tasked with raising the final $3 million needed to complete the campaign. Passing this last Transformation HSC milestone would enable us to explore new additions to the HSC educational experience. I invite you to explore the Final Chapter of the Transformation HSC Campaign, and the ways you can contribute to this remarkable achievement. Whether it is through volunteering with the Parents’ Guild, sitting on the Board, making a donation to the Excellence Campaign or to the capital campaign, the generosity of HSC volunteers and donors makes HSC a special place. On behalf of HSC, the Board of Governors and the Board of Trustees, thank you for your support.

An old Chinese saying “It is not hard (for a person) to do one good deed; it’s hard to do good deeds for life.” For the past 12 years, my two sons have been happy attending Hillfield Strathallan College since they were two and a half years old. I wanted to become more involved with the school, and started serving on the Board in 2015. The more I have had the chance to observe how the school is run, the better I understand that HSC is a truly unique place for our kids to learn, explore and grow.” – Sonia Shi, Board of Governors

A Year of Firsts, Friendship and Fun. The unwavering dedication and generosity of our donors and volunteers, the commitment of our faculty and staff, and the trust of our families—this is what makes HSC a strong and connected community. From fundraisers to championship titles, 2015–16 was an incredible year. We pursued exciting new initiatives and partnerships, and took a fresh look at favourite events. Collectively, we embraced innovation and change as we continued to make our still new facilities feel like home. Together, we achieved great things. Together, we made a difference. Thank you for an amazing year.

Celebration of Philanthropy
Philanthropic support and volunteerism are cornerstones of the HSC community. To express our gratitude, HSC hosted the first Celebration of Philanthropy on October 22, 2015, to celebrate our donors and highlight specific initiatives. The event was an opportunity for the College to demonstrate how contributions from donors make a difference in our community. The heart of the evening was the reopening of the renovated Michael G. DeGroote Gymnasium, supported by Gary W. DeGroote ’74 and family, the
Connor family (current HSC family) and the 2014 Reach for the Stars Gala “Fund a Need” donors. The College also unveiled a new scoreboard dedicated to retired faculty members Rob Reiner and Peter Annable to honour their support of HSC athletics. Ms. Anna Ventresca, Chair of the Board of Governors, then announced the upcoming induction of two long-time supporters of HSC as Patrons of the College: Judith King-Siganski ’62 and Gary DeGroote ’74.
“
Our hope, as a family, has always been that our support of the College would ignite in other HSC families a passionate and sustained interest into giving back to our community.” – Gary W. DeGroote ’74

opportunities that allow them to explore their interests, improve their skills and excel in their talents—giving them the confidence to be whatever they want to be. There are many ways our donors make a difference through the Excellence Campaign. They help bring innovative and creative ideas to life through The David Tutty Joy and Innovation Fund; provide bursaries and scholarships to students in need and to high achievers; and support the greatest needs of our students and school through the Head of College Fund.
The David Tutty Joy and Innovation Fund
Review Committee
In 2015, we asked the HSC community to dream big. We invited them to submit their boldest, most creative and innovative ideas to enrich the HSC learning environment. The proposals received exceeded our expectations, as did the overwhelming support from our community. Dreams are wonderful, but they become powerful when the dreamer has the resources to bring their vision to life. In 2015–16, 11 dreams became a reality with approved funding through the David Tutty Joy and Innovation Fund.

Transformation HSC Campaign Update In less than a decade, HSC transformed from a school of teaching to a school of learning. To realize significant savings in the construction process and ensure our students could benefit from the new facilities as soon as possible, the College secured favourable financing that allowed us to finish the building before the Campaign’s end. To date, we have proudly raised $38 million and completed both
Help Pave the Way the Michael G. DeGroote Senior School and Athletic Complex and Community Centre construction projects. We can now fully accommodate large community gatherings, including graduations, athletic tournaments, celebrations and important traditions such as our Remembrance Day Ceremony and Carol Service. The final $3 million is needed to complete the campaign.
To help complete the Final Chapter of Transformation HSC, we expanded our paver program and invited our community to make their personal and permanent mark at the College. HSC recognized donations with a 3.5" x 18" ($6,000) or a 11.5" x 18" inch ($25,000) engraved stone

Students who spent the WWII years at either Hillfield or Strathallan schools cannot help but be grateful for the great teachers, the facilities and the overall quality of the entire educational process of those institutions during those stressful years. There are a number of us still around who remember the 30s and 40s, the special learning experiences, and the lifetime friendships we were fortunate to have made. Meeting some of the staff at HSC today and seeing the wonderful facilities available to the students, one senses that the best of the earlier years has improved many times over and has produced one of Canada’s greatest schools.” – Ted Mills ’45

Fiscal 2016 was a strong year for HSC, with an increase in both enrolment and our financial stability. Once again, HSC was able to pay down a significant amount of long-term debt, due to the continued pledge payments of Transformation HSC donors. This brought the debt associated with Transformation HSC down to just over $5.97 million. We ended the year with all College funds at healthy levels.

2015–16 Revenue Tuition Fees
In keeping with its Mission, Guiding Principles and Ideals, HSC continues to enhance and support excellence in student programming by maintaining responsible fiscal management, planned capital asset enhancement and campus expansion projects. HSC’s Operating Fund recorded an excess of revenue over expenses of $810,000, enabling the purchase of $576,000 in capital assets. Donations and fundraising revenue—at $157,000—is down from 2015, since 2016 did not include a Gala event (Galas do not take place every year, but are scheduled in accordance with long-term fundraising strategies). A total of $61,000 was transferred through net assets to other funds. This transfer included $100,000 incoming from the Endowment Fund to support scholarships, offset by $28,000 to the Endowment Fund (raised by the Alumni Association at their annual HSC Golf Classic tournament) and $11,000 to the Expansion Fund. The Operating Fund finished the year with a strong balance. The Expansion Fund exists to finance special capital projects outside of normal operations. In 2016, $43,000 of the opening fund balance of $193,000, together with the $1.563 million earned in the year, again afforded the College to make a large debt prepayment above the scheduled blended payments. Total principal scheduled and prepayment amounts were $1.2 million and are netted in the transfer line on the financial statements. This also includes transfers to the Capital Fund to pay interest amounts of $251,000, the principal

The fund closed the year at $150,000, reflecting the $146,000 life insurance asset retained in the balance. HSC maintains and improves its buildings, grounds and equipment through a program of planned upgrades and replacements. These projects are funded primarily from the Operating Fund, with the exception of expansion projects, which are funded from the Expansion Fund. In 2016, the cost of property, plant and equipment maintenance and upgrades, including the new Tennis Courts, provided $876,000 in new assets in the Capital Fund. Funding for the Tennis Court project was generously donated by the Losani and Lawrie families. Donations for capital assets directly funded are recorded as revenue in the donation and fundraising lines of the applicable funds, and these assets are included in the net asset transfer amounts of the Operating and Expansion Funds to the Capital Fund. After amortization, the Capital Fund balance is $40.742 million. After related expenses, investment and donation revenues, the Endowment Fund recorded a $14,000 deficit of revenue over expenditures in the year. Note that accounting standards require our endowment investments to be measured at market value. After recording an outgoing net asset transfer of $72,000 ($28,000 incoming fundraising, less $100,000 outgoing to support scholarships paid through the Operating Fund), the fund balance ended the year at $2.646 million.

Respect. Integrity. Community. Individuality. Determination. Our core mission is to develop joyful and engaged students who live life with purpose. The best learning happens when students are happy to come to school, have opportunities to follow their passions, and participate in deep learning experiences that challenge them. Joyful, engaged students develop strong relationships with their peers and with the caring adults who spark and support their learning both inside the classroom and beyond. Their journey at HSC prepares students to live with purpose—to understand their world, inspire, lead, act, and make a difference in their own unique ways.
