WELCOME TO EWEEK ʻ22! Information guide for new students, parents, and guardians


WHAT IS

EWEEK? Each September, students at HSC participate in unique enrichment experiences known as Eweek. These experiences take place in the great outdoors and are designed to develop leadership skills, foster personal growth, create opportunities for students to socialize outside of the classroom, and support the resilience and wellbeing of our community.

GRADE 5 EWEEK EXPERIENCE Niagara Region Day Trips Students will experience the Niagara Gorge Hike, White Water Walk, Aero Car, the Journey Behind the Falls, Niagara’s Fury, and the Butterfly Conservatory. Students will return to campus each night. Cedar Glen Outdoor Education Centre (overnight) Students will enjoy an overnight adventure at camp where they will immerse themselves in the outdoor classroom, taking part in outdoor living skill building activities, while developing leadership skills. This is the perfect setting for new students to develop friendships and bonds with their peers and teachers. GRADE 6 EWEEK EXPERIENCE Royal Botanical Gardens Students will explore the grounds of the RBG while learning about the biodiversity of plants, mamammls, bird, reptiresl, trees, wildflowers, and more, all in our backyard! They will explore “The Fishway” and hike along the Bruce Trail, and learn about the responsibility that we all share to protect our environment. Students will collect plant samples, start a herbarium, and remove invasive plants from the land, and will enjoy a one-night camp out under the stars. Working together, students will learn the importance of maintaining and supporting biodiversity in our own backyard! GRADE 7/8 EWEEK EXPERIENCE Camp Timberlane - Grade 7 The Grade 7 program introduces students to the concepts of stepping out of their comfort zone and tapping into their independence. Through participating in a variety of outdoor activities, students will practice and experiment with finding their unique balance between comfort and fear (flow) both physically and emotionally. Camp Timberlane - Grade 8 The Grade 8 students will focus on community building and what it means to follow your authentic path. They will leave the program with the understanding that the foundation of a strong community revolves around respect for, and support of its members’ diversity. Programming is provided by ALIVE Outdoors, with assistance from Grade 12 student leaders and HSC faculty. GRADE 9 EWEEK EXPERIENCE Onondaga Camp The Grade 9 program will connect students with their tutorial group where they will work through camp activities to build teamwork and leadership skills. This is an amazing opportunity for new students to build relationships and connect with their peers and teachers as they participate in a variety of camp activities. High ropes, climbing walls, swimming, paddle boarding, and wilderness activities are all on the menu, and students will have the opportunity to demonstrate their hidden talents at talent night, hosted at Onondaga’s outdoor theatre. There is no better way to start the grade 9 year than at Onondaga! Programming is provided by ALIVE Outdoors, with assistance from Grade 12 student leaders and HSC faculty. GRADE 10 EWEEK EXPERIENCE Camp Arowhon, Algonquin Park The Grade 10 program will give students the chance to participate in all camp activities on site at Camp Arowhon, such as canoeing, kayaking, high and low ropes, archery, and eco challenges, to name a few. They will enjoy a canoe day trip where they will explore the beauty of Algonquin Park, prepare a meal together, and learn about the ‘leave no trace’ principles of camping in Ontario. Camp Arowhon is one of Ontario’s oldest summer camps, so students should get ready to go ‘off-grid’ and enjoy this timeless experience!

GRADE 11 EWEEK EXPERIENCE Camp Arowhon Leadership Camp, Algonquin Park The Grade 11 leadership program is grounded in leadership, service and legacy, teaching students valuable skills that they will carry with them into the school year. For new students, this is a great opportunity to learn about leadership opportunities that are available at HSC, while connecting with their classmates and teachers. Students who are interested in being a grade 12 camp counsellor next year will learn valuable leadership skills while at Arowhon, all while engaging in the camp activities that surround them in beautiful Algonquin Park!

GRADE 12 GRAD LEGACY Onondaga Camp, Minden, Ontario (September 9 - 11) The Grade 12 Grad Legacy weekend is the perfect start to the final year of high school at HSC! Students will settle into camp at Onondaga where they will have the opportunity to engage in all camp activities, while reflecting on their high school journey. For new students to HSC, this is a wonderful opportunity to connect with new friends, learn about their new school, and share a story or two about themselves. By the end of the weekend, they will feel like an HSC lifer! Through group and individual work, students will determining what they want their grad legacy to be, and will set the tone for an exciting year ahead.

MODULES New students in grades 11 and 12 have the option of one of the modules listed below. The modules are day trips, returning to campus every afternoon or early evening.

Arts & Culture

Science

Students will tour cultural events around Southern Ontario, visiting galleries, theatres, workshops and live music. Discussions of the relevance of the institutions and performances will complement and deepen each experience. By the end of the module, students will have a greater appreciation for local arts and culture, and long-standing cultural traditions.

Students with a passion for science will enjoy this enrichment opportunity offering a glimpse into careers in biology, chemistry, and physics. From the Ontario Science Centre and the Planetarium, to the University of Guelph anatomy Lab, students will take their science class to the next level. This is a ‘must-do’ opportunity for the science minded student!
