The Game of Clue - Behind the Scenes

What is Clue?

Clue is a murder mystery game in which there are five characters (Mr. Green, Miss Peacock, Prof. Plum, Mrs. Scarlett and Dr. Orchid), six weapons (candlestick, wrench, lead pipe, rope, dagger and revolver), and nine rooms (hall, study, ballroom, billiards room, dining room, kitchen, lounge, conservatory and library. A murder was committed and your job is to find out who did it, with which weapon, and in which room.

History of Clue

Clue was created by a British factory worker named Anthony Pratt in 1943. He was from Birmingham, UK and studied music in his youth and played in hotels. He was used to live-action murder mystery game parties at hotels where he performed. During the war, times were tough and people could no longer attend these parties. Pratt decided he wanted to create a version of a murder mystery that people could play at home.

The Release of Clue

When Pratt finished Clue, he applied for a patent. It wasn’t until 1947 (4 years later) that he sold the rights to Waddingtons. Waddingtons changed a few things including the original name of the game called “Murder!”. Waddingtons did not like that name so they changed it to Cluedo. Cluedo is made up of two words, Clue and Ludo. Ludo means “I play” in Latin. Right before the game was launched, Parker Brothers made a deal with Waddingtons. Parker Brothers would give the rights to sell Monopoly in the UK if Waddingtons could sell Cluedo in America. Waddingtons agreed and before America launched Cluedo, they changed the name to Clue. Then things stayed the same for about 40 years with 6 weapons, 6 characters and 9 rooms until Hasbro came in and bought both Parker Brothers and Waddingtons.

The Old Version vs. the New Version

The version that Pratt invented is quite different from the version that you know now. For example, when Pratt first made the game, it had 10 suspects. Besides the ones you already know, there was Miss. Silver, Mr. Brown, Mr. Gold and Mr. Black. There were also 2 other rooms called the gun room and the cellar. Besides the weapons, you already know there was the poison, axe, bomb, syringe, fireplace poker and the cudgel. When Hasbro bought Parker Brothers and Waddingtons, they created many different versions of Clue the game, like Harry Potter Clue, Clue and the Case of the Missing Pet and even a version where there is no game, just Clue-themed Nerf guns. Clue has evolved a lot since it was created almost 80 years ago.

But what we still don’t know is who killed Pratt with what weapon and in what room. (Just kidding--he died of natural causes!)

@theHelm-page7

YOU’VE PROBABLY HEARD OF THE HOLE IN THE OZONE LAYER. BUT DO YOU KNOW WHAT IT ACTUALLY IS? THE OZONE LAYER IS A THIN LAYER OF GAS IN THE STRATOSPHERE. IT ACTS AS A LARGE SPONGE THAT ABSORBS ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT. WHILE WE NEED SOME OF THE SUN'S RADIATION, TOO MUCH WILL DAMAGE LIVING THINGS. IN 1985, THE OZONE LAYER WAS FOUND TO BE THINNING DUE TO CFC’S OR CHLORO-FLUOROCARBONS. AFTER THIS, A MEETING WAS SET UP AND ON THE 16TH OF SEPTEMBER 1987, THE MONTREAL PROTOCOL WAS ESTABLISHED; IT IS ONE OF THE ONLY AGREEMENTS TO ACHIEVE UNIVERSAL RATIFICATION. THE PROTOCOL'S GOAL WAS TO LESSEN THE AMOUNT OF CFC’S USED, AND SO FAR IT HAS WORKED. STARTING IN 1980, THE HOLE WAS AROUND 5 MILLION KM². DURING 2000 THE LARGEST HOLE WAS RECORDED AT 29.9 MILLION KM² AND AS OF 2020, THE HOLE IS 25 MILLION KM². WHILE THE NUMBER DOESN’T SEEM LIKE THE BIGGEST IMPROVEMENT, IF WE CAN KEEP UP OUR EFFORTS, HOPEFULLY THE HOLE WILL SHRINK EVEN MORE.

CAN YOU GUESS THE COUNTRY FROM THESE 5 FACTS?

This is a relatively mountainous and expensive country.

You can cross the entire country in a straight line by just walking for around 25 kilometres.

This country actually pays a nearby and more populous country to take their waste away.

Almost all of this country’s power comes from sustainable sources, even though they extract lots of fossil fuels.

The northernmost point of this country can drop below freezing in the winter.

5VALENTINE'S SONGS

"Valentine" by Laufey

1

2

3

4

5

It has a soft, low, and soothing sound to it The accompanying instruments are playing the perfect rhythm, pitch, and tempo to enhance and emphasize the vocals Starting with guitar and piano, there's a pause, then drums come in, followed by a second singer A lovely blend makes this song feel cozy and soothing

"I Will Always Love You" sung by Whitney Houston and written by Dolly Parton

This song has a strong intro, starting with a singer, no instruments, on a high and strong note The instruments come in at the song's lifting pointing, where we hear the chorus. It is an amazing song, written by Dolly Parton who then sold it to Whitney Houston. Dolly Parton said, “I could not believe how she did that. I mean, how beautiful it was that my little song had turned into that, so that was a major, major thing.”

"Stuck With U" by Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande

This is a medium-paced song, between two amazing vocalists This song has such amazing lyrics that are easy to understand even at a fast pace The part in which the singers start duetting is also quite amazing because the two are singing on two different pitches but making it harmonize The song talks about two lovers who have had their differences but are making it work and loving each other for it

"Right Back At One" by Brian McKnight

Don’t let the name fool you This is a song about love, not counting The song has drums and piano as its main instruments It has a lovely tempo, with the vocalist keeping the pitches somewhere around the same It describes the love someone has for someone else, what they were, and what they became

"On Bended Knee" by Boys II Men

This is a song about high school love, with a mix between synthesizers, piano, and percussion used as the instruments There's a main singer, followed by a group with different pitches between the members. The people have great harmony and blend since you can tell the difference between the main and group vocalists in some parts of the song. The main singer has long lyrics that changed, whereas the group has short lyrics that continued to repeat.

A Message from the Health Action Team (HAT)

January is Mental Health month, and for students and staff at HSC, that means it's time to participate in GLOW! Some people may be wondering, "What is GLOW?” It stands for “Gathering Lessons on Wellbeing” and stemmed from the idea of putting together activities that students would be able to use year-round to support their mental wellbeing GLOW is in its second year, with activities incorporated into classes and student assemblies, including a special visit from our former teacher, Ms. Ferrell.

The final event for the month was the Wellness Fair. During the Wellness Fair, the Middle School participated in a variety of mini events We had teachers and professionals host many of the activities that engaged the students and left them with goodies Students learned many techniques to make them feel good about themselves and were taught about the benefits of GLOW. The concussion presentation was very intriguing; we learned about the effects of a concussion and how it can cause deadly damage.

Many students expressed interest in all the stuff they could apply to their wellbeing, from smelling essential oils or just applying lotion to their skin.

The Health Action Team (HAT) saw many students and peers enjoying themselves as they were relaxing and applying the wellbeing strategies being shared by staff. At the end of the day, students walked away with many strategies to support their mental health and learned what they need to focus on moving into the rest of the school year.

HAT looks forward to supporting students moving forward with an incredible event coming up soon! Take a guess... FAMILY DAY! Students will have an opportunity to use many of the mental health activities and share them with their family and friends that weekend!

Look for more wellbeing tips coming to you in next month’s issue of @theHelm

Here is this month's Poetry Prompt.

"The sky was a radiant blue, reflecting my past feelings and the moving sea, but now the sky is a serene black"

Please use this if you feel stumped or if you completely have writer's block I hope to see all your poems next month!

Poem by Valeria Caruana, 702

It's the New Year and people say, “ New Year, new me” I said “oh my gosh” to that idea and said will there be an entry fee?

Okay so new me… what shall I do to become a new person? New appearance? Better goals? A cooler version?

I don’t know about a cooler version of me I thought I was cool but now this got me overthinking, do you agree?

Maybe my appearance, should I dye my hair pink!?? Or blue? Or red? Or green and purple?? *Wink* *Wink*

Okay, that might not work out so let's tackle the idea of better goals

Wait, I’m a goalie so I don't know if that will work I’m bored I want some cinnamon rolls!

"The Faceless Dancer" by Anonymous

The stage is set

The lights are dim

The bells on my ankles sing softly to themselves

The silence is broken

Watch my heels strike the floor.

I claim it as my own

My arms bend and stretch and slice through the air. Now that’s all mine too

In the minutes I am allowed I can mold this room into Anything it needs to be.

As I leap I can Make pain into power And power into pain

If you want me to, I can pluck this moment from the sky And toss it to you

Watch it flutter in your hands

Now I’ll take it back- gently- and pin it to a page. It will be there ten years from now When you will not be the same But it will.

You say you don’t know me

I have no looks to recognize And no name to speak of I am the faceless dancer

You say don’t know me But I can prove you wrong If I could, I would hand you my eyes.

I have none- so you will just have to Watch Really look.

Can you see the way the light hits the walls?

Can you see the purple shadows Shift with my movements? Look closer.

Can you see the damp grass Where I first practiced my steps For an audience that often came and went?

When they stayed, it was for the breadcrumbs

Still, this place, lost to time, was better than nothing. Listen

Can you hear my waves?

How softly they rise? Watch them loom over you

What will they take?

What will they give?

Now they come crashing down

Perhaps the water rushing over your face Will be warm. Maybe some part of you, Locked away for months Will start to heal itself.

Or else it will be cold And salty- really salty

You don’t have to like it

But maybe someday You will gather your strength And fight it Take a breath

Fall back into yourself.

The lights are back on

The bells on my ankles hum a quieter song.

I am the faceless dancer And I have given you my eyes I want to know:

What can you remember?

Principals Interview

Mr. Birthelmer Mrs. Setzkorn Mrs. Kniaz

WhydidyouchoosetojoinHSC?

Mr. B - In high school I visited HSC and knew it was a great school I first got a job in the Junior school and then moved into the Middle school.

Mrs. Setzkorn - I had done a teaching placement here when I was in teacher's college and I loved it. My placement was with a Grade 8 History teacher named Mrs. Keith. She was a great mentor!

Mrs. Kniaz - I had worked at other independent schools and knew that this was a great school. HSC was also closer to my house and I loved teaching middle school students.

Whatdoyouenjoymostaboutteaching?

Mr. B - My favourite part of teaching is seeing kids grow and watching their journey through the Middle School. I love seeing kids have successes in their lives and trying their best.

Mrs. Setzkorn - The thing I enjoy most about teaching is the relationships with students and faculty.

Mrs. Kniaz - My favourite things are the students and staff: getting to know students as individuals and working with teachers to make sure they reach their teaching goals

WhydidyougointotheMiddleSchool?

Mr. B - I think grades 5-8 are a really important time for kids. At that time they're still eager to learn and impressionable. It's also a great age where you can kid around with them and have a good time.

Mrs. Setzkorn - I really love the middle school age. Students are very keen to learn and learn new things everyday!

Mrs. Kniaz - Originally I wanted to teach high schoolers, but after teaching grade 8 in Egypt, I realized that I liked teaching middle school kids.

Chan (601), Katie Stubbs (602), and Maria Titov (803)
@theHelm - page 22

Mr. B - I really want to keep progressing towards a respectful and inclusive environment. A change I think we might need is more transition time between periods

Mrs. Setzkorn - I would love to see the continuation of wellbeing Wednesdays during flex time

Mrs. Kniaz - I would like to change how we use home form time I would also like to see what change the principals council can make and see where we can take it

Whydidyoudecidetogointoteaching?

Mr. B - I originally wanted to be a lawyer. But after I taught a camps, I realized what a great impact my teachers had had on me and how much I liked helping people

Game Review

Mrs. Setzkorn - After working with adults at McMaster University, I knew I was meant to work with kids, so I applied for teacher's college and started my career.

Mrs. Kniaz - Originally I wanted to go into medicine, but I realized that wasn't my passion. Teacher's college was only a year so I thought I would do it and if I didn't like it then my backup plan was a masters in biomechanics.

I think that It Takes Two is a great strategy game about a puzzle and requires two people to play

In the game, you must complete levels to progress through the story. These levels contain puzzles that the players must complete, and at the end of the level, there are usually boss fights that must be completed to end the level and move on to the next

"How did we get here?" you may ask. Before this started, there was a wife and a husband that had a daughter, and during this time was when their relationship was failing severely and they were considering divorce. Before they were able to divorce, a magical book came and made them into tiny dolls The reason for this was to change their mind about divorcing because they have a child that they do not want to lose and for them to work together to regain their original bodies back (because they hated each other before they were transformed)

In the end, their relationship gets better and they start to love each other again and they decide not to divorce each other Yay! I can't yet relate because I don't have a wife...

Our main character (Link) is challenged far more uniquely in this game. The plot follows Link but this time, he can turn into a wolf whose companion is Midna, a ghost-like creature who helps him prevent Hyrule from being taken over by the Twilight realm. This is, by far, a must-have for any fan of any kind of game; it will for sure be an AMAZING introduction to one of the best series: The Legend of Zelda.

KeeperoftheLostCities

Hello, and welcome to my book review for the first book of the Keeper of the Lost Cities series. There are ten books in the series and one is coming out sometime between 2023 and 2025 In order, the books are called Keeper of the Lost Cites, Exile, Everblaze, Neverseen, Lodestar, Nightfall, Flashback, Legacy, Unlocked, and Stellarlune, the new book that is coming soon. So, more about the book: twelve-year-old Sophie Foster is a telepath and no one knows. One day, a strange boy named Fitz can also read minds. Sophie has to leave behind her life and start a new one in the Lost Cities. The Lost Cities are where the elves live, but not the elves who live in the North Pole

This book is for ages 8-12, but I think that anyone can read it including adults. It was published in 2012 and the newest book was published in 2022. I even had to go on a book wait for Stellalune! The author's name is Shannon Messenger, and she writes other books that are not the Keeper of the Lost Cities books. Some of the other series are called Sky Fall, and in order they are Let the Sky Fall, Let the Storm Break, and Let the Wind Rise

My Personnel Review:

Use less energy in your house

Respect parks and gardens

USE YOUR VOICE! Talk about climate change to other people Raise the issue!

Two Degrees is one of the best books I have read. After I heard about the book when we as a Middle School attended Alan Gratz's online book launch, I instantly thought that this was going to be a fun book to try out. So of course, I went and bought the book. The cover instantly caught my eye. It really expressed the message of the book's meaning: climate change. This was a real page turner I love how all the stories and people in each of them were all connected This book really taught me about climate change The tornados, fires, and animal-related threats all happen in real life We as humans have a big impact on how these disasters start, and we as humans have to step up and do the right thing We can do lots of things to prevent the increase of these disasters If you want to find ways how you can help, look at the list I made (above)

The Plum Tree

It was spring. I was outside, lying on my back while eating plums and watching the clouds, tired after running among the sunflowers and skipping atop the grassy fields when it happened: the moment that would change my life forever I dropped a plum. This may not seem like much, but what I didn’t know was that the plum wasn’t ordinary. It was magic. At that very moment, I heard my mom’s voice say, “Jean, time for dinner!” but I was in my own world. Slowly, I stood up, brushed off bits of freshly mowed grass from my skirt and sauntered inside

The next morning, I planned my day. It’s funny, because I’m very organized when it comes to my day, but not very organized when it comes to my room. This was my plan:

Morning: Learn how to make the perfect scrambled eggs. Afternoon: Dig a pond in the backyard, look for frogs to put in it Evening: Catch fireflies and take photos of them, go to bed.

I thought that this was a good plan, and I started my morning activities. After I made the perfect scrambled eggs, I looked out the window and screamed Not that little scream that is so high-pitched you can barely hear it, but a loud, low scream that echoed around the house for a few moments My Mom, Dad, little brother, older sister, dog, cat, bird, rabbit, fish and hamster came to my aid, yelling, chirping and meowing.

“Honey,didyousteponthebunny?”said Dad,frantically.

“Didtheparrotpeckyouagain?”asked Mom.

Ice Horse

Chapter 3 of a story

“Are you awake? Finally?”

I hear a soft voice calling me. I feel someone caressing my arm and my heart races It’s Salonqa, my sweetheart, the girl I have loved for so long and to whom I have never been able to admit my feelings I think I’ll continue pretending to be asleep!

Fingers run over my stomach and tickle me until I open my eyes and begin to laugh – laughter that turns to a cry: “Ouch!”

“Oh, I’m sorry!”, says Salonqa apologetically, “I’d forgotten you were broken!”

Images of my fall and my rescue come back to me in a blur. Am I in a hospital? No, I recognize the round walls and wooden, felt-covered lattices of our yurt, the hangings with the colourful geometric patterns and the smell of Horhog with vegetables and lamb which is bubbling on the hob. My stomach gurgles impatiently!

“Oh, it’s not too bad. It could have been worse,” I say, lifting my hands and finding them bandaged

“Mmm You got off lightly, according to the travelling doctor Just a few cracked ribs

But with your frostbite, unfortunately, you won’t be able to use a keyboard with your fingers anymore... or with your toes!"

Salonqa pulls a mirror from her backpack and moves it over my body like a scanner I examine the extent of the damage Bandages around my torso for the cracked ribs, hands and feet swaddled like infants, and my face... a mess of black, purple and yellow bruises. I don’t look pretty. I change the subject:

“My brother? Altaïr?”

“They’re fine and can’t wait to see you And as you can’t leave your bed yet, you lazy thing, I’ve brought you a gift!”

Salonqa places something carefully on my stomach. It’s my laptop, the one I had left at the university! She could not have made me any happier. But how am I going to be able to type?

“Your classmates have made a small improvement!” announces Salonqa cheerfully “Voice commands. Remind you of anything? Go on, give it a go!”

I was all the more willing to give this a try, as I had already adapted some speech recognition software into Mongolian and had created a tutorial to help nomadic children from the steppes and the high mountains learn to read and write Our government has made a huge effort to develop cable internet in the country, so all the nomads have to do is plug in their computers and log onto one of several relays scattered throughout the country to work and progress I am so grateful to have been able to benefit from the free, distance MIT courses that I wanted to help the children in my own country to use this model.

It’s a bit – a lot even – for I mean thanks to Salonqa, the daughter of a Dukhan reindeer herder in the harsh northern Taiga, now a university student by her sheer force of will. Her passion for teaching is so contagious, she is so “Come on, you’re not looking at a statue! Get a move on!”

I comply obediently, blushing under my bruises.

“Turn it on.”

The computer obeys immediately, the screen revealing a panoramic image of the classroom at the University of Ulan Bator My classmates cheer excitedly until my teacher, Professor Temudjin, appears on the screen and silences my friends:

“We are happy that you are well,” he says, nodding. “This,” he says, pointing at the camera on the wall of the classroom, “will mean you won’t miss any lessons Welcome back Ahem, well, let’s continue,” he finishes, disappearing from the screen

Ah, that famous Mongolian discretion! But I could tell how happy he was, my dear old teacher. He took me on as his assistant, which allowed me to finance my studies without any cost to my parents, and he never stopped encouraging me I owe him everything! Salonqa says that as he hadn’t any children, he decided to devote himself to his students, to support them even after they have finished their studies. And so he’s ended up with an extremely large family, one that is loyal and grateful

Oh, an “info” icon is flashing at the top of the screen. The search terms I programmed let me filter the endless flow of international news.

@theHelm-page38

Continued from the previous page

I open it using a voice command and live images begin to move. “Breaking news. An incredible discovery has delighted the world of paleoanthropologists and natural history researchers. Following the accident involving a teenager in a crevasse in the Altai Mountains in Mongolia, the cryogenically frozen body of a horse encased in ice was discovered and has been identified as a breed probably now long extinct. Its body seems to have been well preserved. Scientists from the Ulan Bator Academy of Sciences have constructed a temporary observation laboratory around the site of the discovery with the help of speleologists

According to the scientists’ initial estimates, the horse probably lived between 2,000 and 2,500 years ago. The search continues in the mountains to find the body of the potential rider ”

“Hey! It’s Jargal!” exclaims Salonqa suddenly, pointing to a handsome young man among the scientists He’s getting better looking all the time...”

My jaw tightens involuntarily upon hearing the name Jargal, Salonqa’s ex I hate him, that Don Juan Sure, she ended up dumping him as he was so notoriously unfaithful, but she still suffered a lot And I’m afraid she might still have feelings for him... In a rage, I reach out to close down these images, but I am so clumsy with all these bandages that I send the laptop flying.

“Take it easy!” laughs Salonqa, putting the laptop back on my stomach “Think about using your voice instead of your fat fingers.

Well, I’m going back to class I’ll be back soon,” she finishes, planting a kiss as gentle as a butterfly on my cheek. My heart soars like an eagle, beating its wings in the cage that is my chest Let’s hope she can’t hear this racket The next time I see her, I’ll confess my love for her! A chuckle from behind my bed causes me to jump My grandmother shuffles over, a cup of tea with salted milk in her hand. She had been sitting behind me in the yurt this whole time! With her smile full of wrinkles, as if to represent the many warm memories of her life, she makes me drink very slowly, just like when I was a little kid And I’m grateful that Mongolian discretion is so legendary, as it saves me having to respond to the teasing I sense in her eyes…
