QUALICOAT MEMBERS MEET
By Chris Mansfield - QUALICOAT Chair
Throughout the year licenced
members of QUALICOAT UK & Ireland hold regular meetings to network and review the ongoing work of the global QUALICOAT Specification. The Specification is constantly being updated as new technology and testing research becomes available, often these updates come from internal working groups of the global QUALICOAT Association based in Zurich.
The Summer meeting is also the time when, every two years, the Vice Chair steps up to become the Chair of the Association and I am delighted that my peers in the Association trust me in taking up the mantle from our outgoing Chair Angus Mackie. I’d like to thank Angus for all his hard work over the last few years.
I’m also pleased to announce that Yasmin Panam, of Barley Chalu, has agreed to be my Vice Chair for the next two years.
The day before the members meeting we held our laboratory technicians training day
which proved to be another great success, building on last years well attended event. Our equipment providers brought along various bits of equipment that allowed our member’s laboratory technicians to review their testing responsibilities in ensuring quality application and adherence to the QUALICOAT Specification. It is a condition of the licence that all laboratory technicians attend a day’s training every two years.
Some significant changes are coming to fruition within the UK & Ireland Association, the first regards the exclusivity of powder coat production. It has long been established in the Specification that all coatings completed by a licenced QUALICOAT applicator must meet the Specification. There is now an option for a powder coat applicator to coat non-approved, specialist powders on the same powder coating line, given strict requirements for doing so. This now opens up membership to applicators in the UK & Ireland who use these powders to join QUALICOAT.
Chris Mansfield - UK & Ireland Chair
Yasmin Panamincoming Vice Chair
QUALICOAT
It must be remembered that each licenced applicator member of QUALICOAT is inspected twice a year to ensure that the Specification is being followed so it is important to note any specialist powders being used that do not conform to the Specification. These inspections are undertaken by the independent test house IFO based in Germany. Any nonconformities can lead to a member losing their coating licence.
Membership of QUALICOAT is open to applicators, pretreatment suppliers and powder coating suppliers, each becoming licenced upon reviews and inspections of plant and output. The QUALICOAT label cannot be used by any company down the supply chain. This is to change and, for a small fee per year, downstream companies such as systems companies and fabricators who manufacture coated aluminium in architectural applications can apply to use the logo in conjunction with the Licence Number of their Applicator. It must be reiterated though that all powder coated material supplied by the company must be traceable back though to a licenced applicator. The third party licenced membership that this provides will be subject to twice year unannounced inspections to review provenance of coatings.
The membership also agreed that the Association will be present at the Zak Conference taking place in London in 2025 and taking a speaker opportunity to advise the facade community of the latest research into sustainable architectural powder coatings.
There is also development in the classification of the Qualicoat Natural Weathering site in Genoa in that it has now been scientifically proven to meet

the exposure conditions required within BS EN 12206. This means that the requirements of the Qualicoat Specification and BS EN12206 for testing Alternative Pretreatments are now aligned. It is expected that QUALICOAT will release a Technical Information Sheet on this subject in the near future and this will be available on the UK & Ireland website.
The Association suggests that all UK & Ireland architectural powder coaters should become members of the Association to further raise sustainable coating in construction sector. None of us want to see failed powder coatings after a few years on the facade and only quality pretreatment of architectural aluminium and quality coatings can achieve this. It must be noted that a QUALICOAT Specification does not increase
costs of powder coating, but ensures that the correct quality of coating is supplied for any given location.
The up-to-date QUALICOAT Specification is freely available for download via the UK & Ireland Association website, qualicoatuki.org and the website offers an up-to-date list of licensed UK and Ireland Powder Suppliers, Pretreatment Suppliers and Applicators including the applicators who carry the Seaside class accreditation. Telephone support is available from QUALICOAT UK & Ireland Head Office in the Midlands on 0330 240 9735, the Association can also be followed on Twitter @Qualicoatuki or on LinkedIn www.linkedin.com/company/qualicoat-uk&-ireland.

INLINE MEASUREMENT OF PLATINUM AND OTHER CATALYTIC METALS ON FUEL CELL MEMBRANES
Fuel cell technology is playing an increasingly important role in the transition to sustainable mobility. Polymer electrolyte membranes (PEM) are a central component of PEM fuel cells. These membranes consist of several layers, one of which contains platinum or other metals as a catalyst. The metal content of this layer can be measured and controlled inline during production using X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF). Fischer offers the necessary inline measurement technology for this.

technologies for e-mobility in these areas is the fuel cell.
Long charging times are eliminated and the energy carrier (hydrogen) can be “refuelled” quickly. The range of fuel cells only depends on the fuel station network.
life
Technologies of the future are on their way into everyday
The challenges of climate change are accelerating the development of future technologies. Electromobility is one of the largest global growth markets today. Widespread adoption of this technology will enable the transition to a more sustainable energy supply and a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions. Currently E-mobility solutions for passenger cars are mostly based on solutions with rechargeable batteries. Due to their limited range and time-consuming charging times, these concepts are only the second choice, especially in freight and goods transport with trucks. One of the future-proof key
Functionality of fuel cells
In a fuel cell, hydrogen and oxygen from the air react to form water, releasing electrical energy and heat. There are various types of fuel cells on the market. In the field of e-mobility, the PEM fuel cell is the most commonly used. A central component of these modern fuel cells is the polymer electrolyte membrane. It separates the two partial reactions of oxidation of hydrogen and reduction of oxygen and enables the migration of protons from the anode side to the cathode side. The resulting electrical charges are dissipated through conductive layers in the electrodes, thus forming the electric circuit.
First for Sustainability
With our new Interpon D1036 Low-E powder coating, we’ve created an industry first: a powder coating that can cure as low as 150°C while still being Qualicoat class one certified. It can also cure up to 25% faster than conventional powders, reducing both energy consumption and carbon emissions, and significantly improving your coating line efficiency. Easy to apply Interpon D1036 Low-E has the same application properties as standard formulation, is backed by an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) and has a global warranty of up to 15 years to deliver the quality performance, color and style your customers need. It is an innovation that supports our collective commitment to sustainability throughout the value chain.
The process of oxidation and reduction does not take place independently, but must be catalysed. Platinum or other PGMs (Platinum Group Metals) are often used for this purpose. The PEM consists of a multilayer membrane. The catalyst is located in one of these layers. The platinum is often applied to a thin organic web in a roller process. To complete the PEM, this fabric is later combined with other layers.
The correct measuring method for determining the platinum content
For manufacturers of fuel cells, monitoring the platinum content during production is indispensable for quality and cost reasons. Modern X-ray fluorescence analysis is an efficient method for this purpose. XRF is a cost-effective method with fast payback. In addition, it allows precise and nondestructive measurement of the catalytic elements and can be easily automated.
In XRF, a sample is irradiated with X-rays. The sample “responds“ with what seems like
X-ray fluorescence, the spectral lines of which are, on the one hand, elementspecific and, on the other hand, proportional to the element concentration present.
Figure 2 shows an X-ray fluorescence spectrum. The spectrum is evaluated and controlled by the software. The result provides information about the elements present in the membrane and, depending on requirements, their concentration or the mass per unit area.
In particular, excellent measurement performance is achieved for metals typically

used in PEM. Inline XRF allows the analysis of the layer thicknesses of all elements in the range of atomic numbers 14 to 92. In contrast to alternative indirectly estimating methods, which are often based on ultrasound, XRF directly measures the mass per unit area of the catalytic metals on the membranes.
Fischer measurement technology for inline measurement of the
plating content
Typically, the catalytic layer is applied to the PEM in a roll-to-roll process. The FISCHERSCOPE® X-RAY 4000 allows the precise measurement directly in the production line and thus the continuous quality and process control of the catalytic layers in the running production process. The resulting minimization of the use of expensive precious metals leads to a fast amortization of the measuring device at the
same time. For the measurement of PEM with common platinum loadings, the FISCHERSCOPE® X-RAY 4000 achieves an excellent repeatability even with short measuring times. Another possibility to control the platinum content inline is offered by the FISCHERSCOPE® X-RAY 5100 scanner. Compared to the X-RAY 4000, the X-RAY 5100 scanner allows a high degree of individualization. For example, longer travels for larger strip widths can be achieved.
Conclusion: The optimal solution for your fuel cell production
Precisely monitor the quality of catalytic coatings on fuel cell membranes with XRF. From small pilot plant coating systems to

large-volume production, Fischer offers the perfect inline measuring system. The FISCHERSCOPE ® inline measuring instruments meet the high requirements of these production environments. With a wide range of anode materials, production systems can be optimally tailored to individual measurement tasks to achieve the best possible performance. Thanks to precise measurement technology, no safety margins have to be added to the PGM
loading and costs can be significantly reduced. At the same time, the quality of the product is still ensured. Due to low measuring range limits Fischer XRF technology is also equipped for future developments of fuel cell membranes with lower platinum loadings and other catalysts.

STRAALTECHNIEK UK PROUD TO CONTRIBUTE TO SHEFFIELDS COMMITMENT OF SUSTAINABILITY
It is important to Straaltechniek UK that they carry on with their sustainable practices and contribute towards Sheffield’s commitment to environmental sustainability which is encouraged throughout the business and is something they are very proud of, especially by being part of the ‘Made in Sheffield’ brand and with representation from their Chairman Graham Ward, Managing Director Andy Allen and Sales Director Jay Dorling as Freemen of the Cutlers Association in Sheffield.
Straaltechniek UK over the years have implemented good working practices to contribute towards the companies sustainability through introducing various improvements at the site in Sheffield such as solar panels to the offices and main factory workshop, LED lighting throughout the premises installed, newly installed electrical charging points for electric vehicles and recently invested in new equipment in their machine shop that can do the work of multiple machines which means they can now use less energy to produce more parts on a single machine. This has allowed them to cut down energy usage, and therefore cost saving whilst being able to achieve higher production levels.
Straaltechniek have consciously reduced overall mileage between the Sales and Service Fleet by working smarter in various ways such as vehicle sharing as well as arranging more meetings via online platforms such as Teams, Zoom, etc where possible. The company has also now started to look at the companies fleet of vehicles and has now installed electrical charging points for parts of the fleet which are now full electric. Further to this, they now install Modems within every PLC control panel on new equipment they supply into industry which allows remote access for making changes and can provide immediate support to their customers without having to travel to and from site which has proved very beneficial all round, they also install energy efficiency cleaning controllers on their dust collectors, these work on a differential pressure of the filters meaning that it only pulses when the filters are dirty, saving compressed air consumption.
Straaltechniek also introduced the High Performance Long Life GN Blasting Wheel Technology, and this incorporates the beneficial principle of forward curve blades into its revolutionary blast wheel and blade support concept. By design, collision speeds of the abrasive are reduced at the entrance to the blast wheel leading to decreased wear of both blades and abrasive.
With the unique shot/grit projection angle, the GN WHEEL® allows the projection speed of the abrasive to increase by 25 %, leading to a significant decrease (10-25%) in abrasive
usage compared to wheels equipped with radial blades. The efficiency of the GN WHEEL® is up to 70% higher than traditional shot blasting wheels. The GN WHEEL® is available in diameters between 300 and 500mm and can be fitted to turbines of all current and obsolete manufacturers machines. By retrofitting existing machines with the new GN wheel gives customers enormous advantages! In addition to this, the GN Blasting Wheel technology utilizes 25% less energy and achieves the same result.
Although Straaltechniek promote a 25% energy saving using the HighPerformance Long Life GN Blasting Wheel Technology, feedback from customers who have implemented this technology have achieved a 50% energy saving using this technology, which proves that depending on the process, 50% energy saving is achievable.
Straaltechniek UK are committed to continue improving the companies sustainability by introducing further improvements at the site in Sheffield, consciously working in smarter ways to save energy overall, and
will implement further working practices so that the company can continue to contribute to Sheffield’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

GARNALEX ATTAINS SEASIDE CLASS
By Angus Mackie - QUALICOAT Chair
As the QUALICOAT Specification continues to gain traction with powder coaters across the UK and Ireland, the Association is delighted to announce that one of our newest members, Garnalex, has also succeeded in gaining their Seaside licence for optional coating protection when in more exposed conditions, such as within 5Km of the coastline.
Martin Froggatt, Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality Manager at Garnalex comments, “We are thrilled to have been awarded the coveted Qualicoat Seaside applicator class licence. This ensures our products are manufactured to the highest standards for use in seaside and coastal environments and provides the highest levels of Quality Assurance and confidence for our customers. The award demonstrates the commitment our Team have in improving and maintaining the vigorous requirements of this international standard of excellence.”
Introduced in 2008, QUALICOAT began to offer a ‘Seaside Class’ of powder coating where the minimum removal of aluminium surface is increased from 1g/sm to 2g/sm using a dip or spray process of either an acid or a combination acid/alkaline etch. This deeper etch removes more contaminants and therefore offers a more robust pretreatment for areas where local atmospheres carry corrosive salts (chlorides) and other aggressive pollutants.
QUALICOAT licensed applicators who wish to offer ‘Seaside’ class coatings need to apply for an additional licence. The applicator needs to demonstrate that they can remove the 2g/sm by process and monitoring, plus the applicator must offer a coated ‘Seaside Class’ sample for an additional filiform corrosion test carried out at the IFO laboratories located in Germany. IFO provide independent inspection and testing services for all QUALICOAT powder coat applicators in the UK.
The up-to-date QUALICOAT Specification is available for download via the UK & Ireland Association website, qualicoatuki.org and the website offers an up-to-date list of licensed UK and Ireland Powder Suppliers, Pretreatment Suppliers and Applicators including the applicators who carry the Seaside class accreditation. Telephone support is available from QUALICOAT UK & Ireland Head Office in the Midlands on 0330 240 9735, the Association can also be followed on Twitter @Qualicoatuki or on LinkedIn www.linkedin. com/company/qualicoat-uk-&-ireland.
HENDOR-PE UK LTD –
Celebrating over 20 Years supplying products to the
UK surface treatment industry!
Over 20 years ago, I was asked if I would like to set up my own business, Hendor-pe UK Ltd, selling Pumps, Filters and Rectifiers to the UK Surface Treatment industry. At the time I was working for another Pump/Filter manufacturer in the UK as their Technical Manager, I had been there for 12 years, it was a daunting decision with three young children at home.
Myself and my wife visited Hendor in the Netherlands and were extremely impressed with the people, the high quality product range and the pricing!
Some people thought we were crazy trying to introduce another manufacturer to the already crowded market, but we were
convinced that this exceptionally high quality, competitively priced product would be readily accepted.
Over 20 years on, we were right, we have built up a loyal customer base in many industries from GMF, Precious metal plating, electronics, Government establishments, Reel to Reel Plating, Aerospace, Automotive, F1 manufacturers etc, etc . One of our proudest moments is when we get repeat orders from these companies, they like the products we are supplying them.
Hendor was established more than 70 years ago, their principal customer at that time was the mighty Philips in Eindhoven.
Over the years Hendor has become a global leader in manufacturing exceptionally high quality and innovative chemically resistant pumps and filtration products.
Pumps up to 250m³/h
Horizontal
Magnetic Sealless
Vertical Sealless
Filtration Systems up to 60m³/h
Cartridges
Bags
Papers
Microfibres
In the 90’s, Hendor established partners and distributors located all around the world to enable the supply of products at a moment’s notice.
The Hendor-pe partnership began in 1995 when Hendor-pe Inc in the USA was established. Since then, Hendor-pe France, Hendor-pe UK, Hendor-pe Spain, China, and Japan have all been introduced to better serve local markets, as well as having independent distributors in other territories.
A lot has changed at Hendor over the last seventy plus years, however, the desire to do business in an innovative and sustainable way has remained a constant. This is why the organisation set the goal of lean manufacturing in 2016. This desire was manifested by introducing a round of investments worth half a million euros. Hendor invested money in new pump design software and automatic welding, installed LED lighting everywhere and organised the workplace in a more efficient way. Through automation, we wanted to obtain a higher output with the same number of people. The machines are used more efficiently thanks to new planning software. We work with small batches and customise more products in accordance with our customers’ requirements. Not only does this shorten lead times, but we also use raw materials more economically.
With regard to raw materials, we blend our own mix of Polypropylene pellet types which allows us to mould a Polypropylene perfectly adapted to our industries.
We at Hendor value social responsibility and act accordingly. A strategic decision was made to develop the next generation of pumps by a Sustainable Design principle. By applying this concept both the
manufacturing and the life cycle carbon footprint of our products are significantly reduced.
Our filters are an important and successful part of the Hendor legacy. Henk Bohncke, our former owner, designed them with a clear, innovative vision for the future. They were the first filters in the industry made entirely of polypropylene with a welded base. For decades, this product has served many companies within industry.
With the advent of new technologies and the search for optimum efficiency, we have developed a new, innovative design under the leadership of our technical director Hessel Bohncke - son of Henk.
These new Hendor filters are even more user-friendly and efficient. Completely new are the double-welded bases that ensure less pressure loss, more flow, more reach and more energy efficiency from the motor. Absolutely no concessions have been made to the quality of raw materials, features, or user-friendliness. We challenged ourselves by finding a way to still save costs. That is why the new filters consist of fewer components, yet still to the high exacting quality you expect from Hendor.
All our filters are available with standard size filter papers, single and double length filter bags, and of course filter/carbon cartridges, in combination with a magnetic drive, vertical sealless or mechanical seal pump.
More series and products are planned for the future all grafted from the knowledge and experience we have gained over the past 70+ years.
The Hendor product range consists of a wide range of pumps and filters allowing us to supply to the most critical and aggressive solutions at ambient or high temperature.

HADLEIGH ENTERPRISES OFFERS SPECIALIST MASKING TAPE EXPERIENCE AND CAPABILITY
With applications ranging from powder coating to corrosion protection, Hadleigh Enterprises Ltd. brings five decades’ of experience.
Hadleigh Enterprises Ltd has been trading since 1971 as an independent family business, gaining ISO 9001 in 1992.
The Essex-based company stocks and supplies an extensive choice of masking products, all sourced from leading manufacturers. The metal processing and surface finishing sector is a key market for its services with a diverse range of needs met by Hadleigh’s ability to match product type, volume and design to exact requirements.
“So many individual masking tape applications are unique to specific processes, because of this we have found it is vital to work as closely as possible with each customer to develop highly specific solutions,” says David Ogles, Hadleigh Enterprises’ Managing Director.
“By being involved from the outset, and with ongoing production reviews, we can look not
only to supply the most appropriate masking system, but can also ensure the customer benefits from continuous innovation – all as part of a structured application process.” This last point, he believes, is often crucial.
For example, the company’s willingness to develop prototype solutions that address key factors, such as masking accuracy and adhesion, is extremely important and can have a fundamental bearing on ongoing production operations. This also helps to ensure that leading edge developments, such as very high bond performance, the ability to fulfil metal-to-metal applications and high temperature capability of up to 380°C, come under the spotlight every time.
Hadleigh Enterprises hold the accreditation – EN9100:2016 certification – which is of particular note to those involved in the aerospace sector.
“Aerospace has long been one of the markets in which we operate and this accreditation –which is technically equivalent to AS9100D – marks a level of operational capability that will build on the confidence that our customers have in our services,” explains David Ogles.
“The standard reflects the importance attributed to supply chain quality, not least in the context of safety of goods throughout their life cycle which is a major factor, of course, in the aerospace sector,” adds David Ogles. “Overall, this is seen as part of the drive towards establishing commonality of aviation, space and defence quality systems and we are delighted that it underscores our role in these extremely challenging fields.”
Hadleigh Enterprises sources master rolls from leading manufacturers before slitting and shaping them, often to produce die-cut shapes from engineering drawings, to meet exact customer requirements. The company undertakes all conversion in-house to optimise control of both quality and delivery, and can achieve slitting tolerances of +/– 0.2 mm.
“We are very happy to provide material
in quantities of all sizes, even down to a single roll which may be all that is initially required for a prototyping operation,” continues David Ogles.
In so many sectors of the metal finishing and surface treatment industry, the benefits of Hadleigh Enterprises’ capability and experience will be widely acknowledged. “As masking quality is often so closely linked to production results, it is vital that the need for optimised masking is not overlooked,” concludes David Ogles.
Full details are available by contacting Hadleigh Enterprises by phone or email.

INTERPON POWDER COATINGS
INTERPON POWDER COATINGS
HELP HYDRO BUILDING SYSTEMS
SPAIN CONSTRUCT A NEW FUTURE IN SUSTAINABILITY
Hydro Building Systems Spain, a global manufacturer of aluminum profile systems, is extending its 20-year partnership with AkzoNobel and using the innovative Interpon Anodic range to give architects and designers more choice and flexibility than ‘traditional’ anodizing, with reduced environmental implications and cost.
As an Interpon Approved Applicator for many years, Hydro Building Systems Spain was already familiar with the support Interpon provides to its global operations. Now it was looking for further support
to move away from anodizing, both because it had to be outsourced and because of its harmful effect on the environment.
Arantxa Oritz Barredo, Hydro Building Systems Spain Purchasing and Powder Management, says that with the Interpon Anodic range, Hydro can create the appearance of an anodized finish, but in a powder coating, and produce it in-house:
“The metallic effect finishes we are capable of creating are superb, and very wellreceived by our customers,” she says. “The quality of finish is further guaranteed by industry-leading warranties, and Interpon’s accreditation to Qualicoat Class I and II.”
Hydro is respected for its pioneering work in sustainability and started working with AkzoNobel after building a new manufacturing site in Spain at the start of the new millennium. Today it offers a choice of more than 175 different Interpon powder coatings in a range of colors and finishes. The Interpon D team works closely with Hydro Building Systems Spain to ensure its finishes are always on trend, enabling the client to build its own library of additional, bespoke colors from which its customers can choose.
As well as multiple colors, Hydro Building Systems Spain also offers powder coatings with imaginative textures and finishes and different levels of durability. This is important to protect surfaces from some of the more challenging climates to which Hydro Building Systems Spain’s products may be exposed, ensuring their color integrity and performance is maintained for many years to come.
Sanal Limoncuoglu, Regional Commercial Director for SEEMEA, says that proximity to the customer is important: “Hydro Building Systems Spain benefits from AkzoNobel’s local manufacturing presence and knows that the quality of the Interpon powder coatings it uses is consistent everywhere. It is this consistency, and our global warranty system, that supports Hydro Building Systems Spain in winning projects all over the world. Their team can also reach out at any time for technical support or expert advice from our own team and across multiple departments, from quality to customer service.”
Arantxa is similarly delighted with how the partnership is evolving: “When you’ve built a global reputation for the quality of your aluminum profile systems, and are committed to sustainability, you seek partners with similar ideals, and a shared ambition of continuous improvement. AkzoNobel shares our passion for innovation; the more Interpon innovates, the greater the innovation we can take to our customers,” she concludes.

“Thru-process” temperature and optical profiling solutions
Give your Coating Cure
Monitoring the Phoenix Factor
When it comes to coating quality, you need the ability to monitor product temperature, through the cure oven, to ensure you get the cure schedule recommended by your coating supplier. Although the basic principle of thru-process temperature monitoring has remained unchanged over the years, unlike others, the PhoenixTM technology offering has evolved bringing unique innovations to the market.
Intrinsically safe ATEX certified technology
PhoenixTM has complemented its data logger range with the new PTM1500 Epsilon-x temperature data logger offering a unique intrinsically safe 10/20 channel profiling system. The PTM1500 data logger is certified against the ATEX European standards as Group II category for safe operation in gaseous and dust environments (ATEX Zone 2 and 22 respectively) allowing safe operation in automotive paint and powder coating applications.
Compact System
The PhoenixTM Compact system is
Intrinsically Safe
• 20 measurement channels
• Paint & Powder coating
• Includes Phoenix Factor cure index calculation
During Production
• Detect paint runs, drips and defects
• Spot transport problems
• Identify oven damage
designed for the demands of the busy coating operation. A rugged and reliable work horse that is easy to use and cost effective. The data logger accuracy of ±0.3 °C guarantees data quality. Powered with user replaceable AA batteries the data logger can run for 1000 hours. No charging or battery replacement delays so ready when you need it! The silicone free 113 mm high aluminium thermal barrier provides over 2 hours protection at 200 °C and weighs only 3.7 kg making transfer to and lifting on the line trouble free.
Phoenix Factor
To make cure analysis easier and more accurate the Phoenix Factor cure analysis
calculation has been added to the Thermal View Software. The single Cure Index value is accurate yet easy to set-up and interpret. All necessary parameters for the application of Phoenix Factor analysis are stored in an analysis settings file, removing the need for tedious parameter entry each run. The Phoenix Factor allows not only instant QA but allows accurate optimisation of the process settings and direct comparison of different processes.
Thermocouple Innovation
PhoenixTM offer with their thru-process monitoring systems a comprehensive range of thermocouples. Designed specifically for coating applications they offer a robust, easy to use accurate solution for monitoring a range of different product types and materials. Choose from clamp, off-set magnetic or MiniMag to suit. Supplied with user replaceable cables to minimize consumable costs.
Optical Profiling
The newly developed TS64 thermal barrier permits in a single barrier the facility to both protect the PhoenixTM data logger and the PhoenixTM Optic system (video camera with independent illumination) with a thermal performance of 3 hours at 200 °C. For the first time ever, you can potentially not only identify oven temperature uniformity problems from the temperature profile graph but complement this data with video evidence from inside the oven as to the possible root cause of the temperature problem.

Evaluating the Performance of Opteon™ SF80 in Aerospace Applications
Fraser Technologies’ leading Aerospace client faced significant challenges with their existing Cleaning System, which is now utilising Opteon™ SF80® solvent. The application was the flush pipework, and the previous systems consumed over 1 tonne of solvent annually, necessitating a permit
from local authorities, thus escalating operational costs. Additionally, due to stringent regulations surrounding the safe use of Trike and nPB, the systems were equipped with over-tank canopies and safety interlocks to prevent operator exposure to solvent vapours. One system also included a PPM meter that restricted door operation until solvent levels dropped below a specified threshold, enhancing safety and reducing emissions.
The client approached Fraser Technologies to evaluate their current processes and explore safer solvent alternatives. During a site visit, comprehensive inspections of the cleaning systems at two facilities were conducted to determine their suitability for conversion to Opteon™ SF80®. Opteon™ SF80® was selected for its superior cleaning performance, ultra-low GWP, recyclability, reusability, safety, and ease of use.
The Results
Opteon™ SF80® was confirmed as a suitable replacement. This solution has been fully implemented at two locations, with a third facility currently transitioning. Since adopting Opteon™ SF80®, the client has achieved expected cleaning performance while significantly reducing their environmental footprint. Unlike nPB, Opteon™ SF80® does not pose acidity issues, leading to reduced solvent usage and fewer cleanouts. Additionally, it is safe and user-friendly for operators.
Fraser Technologies ensures efficiencies for pioneering aerospace company
A client Fraser Technologies is proud to have worked with now for over eight years, as the superior levels of cleanliness for a client who produces high speed jet engines, is absolutely their number one priority.

Each component must be meticulously clean, with particle sizes no larger than 10 microns, to ensure optimal performance. With increasing demands for higher levels of cleanliness and efficiency, the company identified opportunities to improve their component cleaning processes. Residual material contamination on machined and de-burred surfaces of VSVAs and fuel metering units was preventing accurate measurement and evaluation by the Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM). This required parts to be removed, hand washed, and cleaned manually, adding significant time and labour to what should be a straightforward process.
The company had been using an aqueous system to clean VSVAs and fuel metering units. Fraser Technologies proposed trialling a solvent solution, which they believed would deliver better results. Expert analysts conducted a site visit, evaluated the specific cleaning needs and existing processes, and made detailed recommendations for both equipment and chemistries.
Fraser Technologies recommended Opteon™ SF80®, known for its ability to remove particulate down to submicron levels without leaving residues. Opteon™ SF80® boasts strong environmental credentials with a GWP of less than 2.5. Given the company’s focus on improving their environmental impact, this low GWP solvent was an ideal choice.
The transition from an aqueous to a solvent system offered numerous benefits, including improved technology for easier and faster operations. The solvent’s cooler temperature allowed parts to be ready for immediate measurement, eliminating cooling time. Additionally, the system required lower energy, reducing costs as it only needed
to be heated to 47°C compared to 60°C for the aqueous system.
The critical objective was to eliminate false failures during the CMM test process caused by residual contamination. With the final trial report confirming success, the machine was approved for production. Since its installation the client has achieved a 100% cleanliness success rate for these components.
This success drastically reduced CMM rework by 90%, improving process time and reducing lead times. The increased automation and reduced need for manual checks freed personnel to focus on valueadded tasks, enhancing overall productivity. Importantly, the cleanliness of the parts improved significantly.
Would SF80® help current 3M® customer who are seeking an alternative cleaning chemistry?
Absolutely. Fraser Technologies have already worked with numerous previous 3M® customers in finding an alternative solution to what they were previous using their Novec® cleaning chemistry for. SF80® has by far stood out to the be the product of choice. If you are seeking an alternative do not hesitate to contact Fraser Technologies today. www.fraesrtech.co.uk
