On successful completion, the student is awarded the Foundation Certificate. To follow on, students can then elect to progress to the Technician level modules, which give more in-depth knowledge for key finishing technologies, their application and best practice methods. Again, both inorganic and organic technologies can be studied to match the industry requirements. There is a choice of eight modules, which provide study in applicable areas of surface finishing best matched to your needs.

Like the Foundation course, study is by distance learning, and the student is required to complete four marked assignments and pass an examination. Passing two technician modules leads to the award of Technician Certificate; passing four modules leads to the award of an Advanced Technician Certificate.

QUALICOAT UK & IRELAND

QUALICOAT Exhibits at Zak London

Over the last decade the QUALICOAT Specification for architectural powder coating has become a well established Specification across the UK and Ireland. The Association’s UK membership has now grown to 25 major UK & Ireland powder coat applicators, all of whom carry licences for the supply of QUALICOAT approved finishes. While the Specification continues to grow with more specifiers using it, education is key to ensure the continued reduction in powder coat failures.

To answer questions of the major facade specifiers in the UK, QUALICOAT has decided to support one of ZAK’s biggest global events held in London in November. Zak World of Facades is an international conference series specialising in facade design and engineering. Zak has already hosted over

30,000 delegates across its 129 completed conferences with these one-day conferences held in over 35 countries around the globe. The events offer a unique opportunity to enhance knowledge and skills on key subjects pertaining to building envelope design, engineering, fabrication and installation from

industry experts across the complete value chain of the facade industry. Unlike many standards, a QUALICOAT Specification comes with third party accreditation. All Members of QUALICOAT, which includes powder coaters, pretreatment suppliers and powder manufacturers agree to allow an independent test house, nominated by QUALICOAT, to undertake unannounced inspections of their plant and processes. The intention of these inspections is to ensure that the current Specification is being followed by demonstrating compliance, the Member is then licensed to supply QUALICOAT approved products and coatings. Members who fail to demonstrate full compliance are reinspected and can lose their licence as a result of further non-compliance being reported.

One of the most recent developments within the Association is the launch of QUALICOAT 3.0. Part of a licence holders responsibility is the provision of regular coated samples for extended ‘acetic salt spray’ and in some cases ‘filiform corrosion’ testing at the appointed test house, in the case of QUALICOAT UK & Ireland, this is at IFO Netherlands BV. In a very small number of these test samples it was noticed that premature failure could occur following these very corrosive and accelerated tests. With the cause of the issue unknown, QUALICOAT set up a Working Group of Members to try to identify what was causing the issue and how this could be eliminated to further enhance powder coating durability.

It became obvious during research that the aluminium alloy itself was the contributing factor, so the Working Group began to develop a specification for the alloys used in fenestration, namely alloy 6060 and 6063. The resulting alloy specification, which now forms Appendix A13 of the QUALICOAT Specifications 2023, requires the alloys to fall within the EN573-3:2019 Standard, which can be met using primary or secondary (recycled) aluminium and requires the following three tests to be carried out, Optical Emission Spectroscopy (OES), Anodic Cyclic Polarisation (ACP) and Metallographic Study for Aluminium.

Whilst QUALICOAT 3.0 is a new Specification and is currently used on large facade projects, there are advances in other areas, such as pretreatment. Most members now use robust chrome free pretreatment systems but options also exist for anodic pretreatment of aluminium. Whilst putting your project into the hands of a QUALICOAT licence holder will ensure the correct questions are asked, learning the basics and knowing who to approach when specifying can help the design process. The team look forward to discussing powder coating in detail with conference delegates on 8th November at the Hilton Park Lane, London.

Guide for Reliable Gloss Data

Introduction

Uniform and consistent gloss are an essential quality criterion for a variety of products. Therefore, gloss needs to be objectively measured. Only what can be objectively measured, can be controlled and can be optimized which is of importance in product development as well as in production control. Especially in case of multi-component products a uniform gloss is an expression of “high quality”. Variations in gloss look like something is wrong and the end-user will perceive it as a defect. Therefore, gloss limits and tolerances are defined based on application and customer expectations.

The technical performance of the gloss meter used to objectively measure gloss is essential to obtain reliable data. Therefore, BYK-Gardner glossmeters are developed with focus on excellent technical performance under any circumstances.

1 Technical performance: Essential for reliable data

1.1 Repeatable gloss data

Goal is to meet the target value within a defined tolerance. Therefore, the glossmeter used should deliver repeatable measurement results i.e., excellent short- and long-term repeatability. (Fig. 1)

Otherwise, you don’t know whether the gloss change is due to a glossmeter drift or a true product variation.

1.2 Reproducible gloss data from glossmeter to glossmeter

Reproducibility is as important as Repeatability as every production is part of a supply chain process. Gloss values need be communicated and exchanged within a supply chain. Gloss levels of various production facilities or several production lines need be consistent to achieve a uniform gloss within defined tolerances. (Fig. 2)

Otherwise, a multi-component product will look like patchwork and the various component suppliers will always discuss who delivered the “part with the correct gloss level”.

1.3 Gloss measurement independent of temperature changes

Depending on the season temperature in the production area can change. The temperature during day and night shift can be considerably different. The temperature in the lab might be controlled at 23°C, while in the production area the temperature is much higher due to baking ovens or other production machines.

Therefore, it is essential that the glossmeter used is not influenced by temperature changes and the gloss data is independent of the temperature. (Fig. 3)

If gloss values are only stable within laboratory conditions, data cannot be compared. Temperature stability is as important as repeatability and reproducibility because you don’t know what the temperature conditions are at different production sites.

2 A glossmeter needs “health check”

Production environment is often rough and dusty which can affect the performance of your glossmeter as optics can accumulate dust on the lenses. Therefore, the “health status” of the used gloss meter is an important factor and needs to be checked. The BYK-Gardner micro-gloss instruments have an “auto-diagnosis” which checks the actual performance of the instrument and gives you instant feedback:

3 High gloss, semi gloss, matt - what geometry is best?

The answer is easy: micro-TRI-gloss. The universal glossmeter to measure high, medium and low gloss finishes accurately. Three different illumination angles (Fig. 4) are required to achieve good differentiation of the entire range from high to low gloss surfaces:

- 20° high-gloss surfaces - 60° semi-gloss surfaces - 85° low gloss surfaces

The 60° illumination is used as a general geometry for a wide range of applications with gloss values between 10 and 70 gloss units. If gloss data is higher than 70 GU or lower than 10 GU, this measurement geometry is no longer effective in showing differences as shown by the flat portion of the curve. Thus, the 60° geometry would show little or no difference in this range, while visually there is a clear difference. (Fig. 5)

4 How many measurements should be taken or the importance of statistics

Here our answer is “ONE reading is like NO reading”.

In order to get a representative value of your product finish a minimum of 3 readings should be taken. And to evaluate the uniformity of your product’s surface finish the average with “std.dev. or range (min – max) should be recorded.

The micro-gloss instruments offer a statistic mode (Fig. 6) that can be defined by the user:

A single reading does not give a true picture of the uniformity which is particularly important when evaluating larger surface areas.

General purpose industrial solvent cleaners - safe for users and the environment

Clarea® non-chlorinated industrial solvent cleaners are compatible with all metals, composites and most plastics used to remove dirt, oil, grease, or other contaminants from surfaces without causing harm or leaving residue. They are used as immersion cleaners for component cleaning in manufacturing and engineering industries and as wipe cleaners for large surface areas prior to painting or powder coating.

The environmental concerns and health hazards of the chlorinated solvents used as industrial degreasing agents has led to the formulation of this EnviroTech range of safer cleaning solvents.

What to consider when choosing suitable solvent cleaning products?

Solvents used for cleaning must be highly refined and leave no residues on drying. They need to be highly effective removing oils and soils without causing damage or corrosion of the parts or components being processed and leave minimal residues.

Cleaning specifications vary widely from very demanding automotive and aerospace applications to less demanding applications where critical cleaning is not needed such as pre-used parts or assemblies from the transportation, aerospace, or manufacturing equipment sectors. Heavily contaminated when removed

from service these must be free of oils, soils, grease and dirt before disassembly prior to refurbishing and rebuilding. Much of this work will be manual and the considerations for the safety of operators, hand wiping or brush cleaning is paramount.

Clarea® products are aliphatic hydrocarbon based low odour degreasing solvents with specified flash points. They will remove oils, greases, hydraulic fluids cutting fluids and a wide variety of hydrocarbon based protective coatings. Clarea® solvents can be safely used with all metals and composites and most plastic and paint finishes.

Clarea® HC40 is low odour degreasing fast drying solvent with a flash point of 40°C. It is suitable for ultrasonic and dip systems and can be used with brush or in hand-wipe processes.

Clarea® HC62 is a degreasing solvent with a flash point over 60°C. It is suitable for hand-wipe applications when used externally.

You may have heard the latest information from 3M® that they will exit from manufacturing their range of NovecTM cleaning fludis in the near future. If you are a current 3M® NovecTM user you will need to start to find 3M® alternative solvents. Fraser Technologies are here to help with the perfect solutions.

What is the update from 3M®?

3M® have announced that they will stop manufacturing the NovecTM HFE materials by the end of 2025. They have also have stated in a letter sent to all their customers that they cannot guarantee supply and that current users should be looking at alternatives as quickly as possible.

While there are no immediate issues with supply it would be prudent to consider your options before the supply of the 3M® materials becomes an issue. DECOMET was meticulously developed to meet the stringent requirements of ASTM standard A967. This citric acidbased passivation agent solubilises free iron oxides present on the surfaces of stainless steels, whether martensitic or austenitic. MecWash Systems created a bespoke aqueous cleaning system that has revolutionised the effectiveness of the washing and degreasing programme of leading precision mill turned parts and CNC specialists, APT Leicester. The upgrade from a perchloroethylene cleaning system to the MWX300 has streamlined the cleaning operation and enabled APT to simultaneously prioritise their environmental goals and increase their output, all whilst maintaining the highest standard of finish.

Painting a complete picture of your coating process!

See what truly happens in your automotive paint oven?

PhoenixTM has developed a unique new paint process monitoring system, allowing for the first time, not only the traditional temperature profiling of the product temperature through the oven but also optical profiling of the products journey.

The TS64 thermal barrier permits in a single barrier the facility to both protect the PhoenixTM data logger and the PhoenixTM Optic system (video camera with independent illumination) with a thermal performance of 3 hours at 200 °C. The thermal barrier, incorporating a specially designed heat sink, can be adapted to allow temperature profiling and or optical profiling runs to be performed. Although it is most likely that the different monitoring operations will be best performed sequentially due to different set-up / mounting requirement the system can be used to perform simultaneous product temperature monitoring and optical profiling in a single pass through the oven if required. For the first time ever, you can potentially not only determine oven

temperature uniformity problems from the temperature profile graph but complement this data with video evidence from inside the oven as to the possible root cause of the temperature problem. With a single system you can not only highlight hot and cold spots from the temperature data, which may affect the quality of the paint cure, but quickly and efficiently identify the physical oven fault causing the problem. Use the Optic system to discover oven problems such as faulty fans, blocked ducting or even damage to the internal oven structure or insulation.

The PhoenixTM Optic system allows thru-process paint defect detection using Optical Profiling. The high-resolution video camera can safely travel through the paint oven with an independent torch recording video footage of what the product sees. The system is just like your car ‘Dash Cam’ the only difference being that the journey is through a cure oven operating up to 200 °C. The Optic system can be mounted on a test body allowing monitoring of the exterior of a separate production body shell or potentially directly on a production body itself.

During the journey through the oven the painted car body or component can experience many problems that are not temperature related that can affect the quality of the cured paint. If Suffering from dust inclusions in the final cured coating the optic system can help identify the source of dust contamination within the oven. Dust contamination in the oven can be detected as streaks of light passing across the torch illuminated video image, just like a shooting star across the night sky.

The project specification was the Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Blue Etch Anodising operation to control quality, significantly reduce lead times, provide a new revenue stream and eliminate the risk of damage to the very high value-added components during transportation.

The fully automatic anodising equipment has two parallel legs with a centralised fume extraction system, environmental canopied down draft transporters and automatic lid technology. The design allowed the most effective plant to be effective within the limited factory space which had been allocated for the new machinery. Plastratum designed a water spray cross transfer from leg one to leg two which enabled the installation to be fully installed with ease.

Each leg has a load/ unload station enabling multiple, integrated programming of cleaning and chemical processing simultaneously, realising the benefit of increased productive output efficiency utilising Plastratum’s random-access software. This is integral with SCADA and management data acquisition which is linked to the company’s production server. This provides a powerful management and most beneficial production tool.

Water discharge saving of 80%

Water treatment is integral to the successful operation of this equipment. All rinse water must be less than 20µScm-1 and sufficient to provide excellent rinse efficiency. Although space limitations ruled out double or triple counterflow rinses, there was an opportunity to provide rinse water recirculation. This would enhance rinse water at the correct conductivity, with reduced discharge to foul sewer, thus dramatically reducing risk to the environment along with reducing treatment and discharge cost to the business.

undertaken to calculate the volumes of water required and suitability for recirculation, utilising ion exchange deionisation. This extensive evaluation showed conclusively in favour of water recirculation and provided a water discharge saving of over 80% of the volume to drain. Therefore, there are substantial consequential savings in effluent costs, both capital plant and on-going foul sewer costs.

Full in-depth feasibility study

As with all projects Plastratum undertook an in-depth feasibility study and was able to demonstrate for the customer that a gas fired thermal fluid boiler and distribution system was a beneficial and cost-effective option which was

advantageous to the installation and ideal for the customers’ needs. It was shown that the payback on capital investment would be as little as one and a half years when comparing the electrical costs against the cost of gas, the quantity of which was more than an adequate supply within the factory.

The major benefits of Thermal Fluid heating systems are:

The system only needs once a year servicing.

It is non-corrosive unlike steam and medium temperature hot water.

It does not require water treatment or boiler blow-down.

There is no additional expense of chemical additions.

In addition, the experienced and dedicated Plastratum design and engineering team were requested by the customer to provide a component manipulation system that operated in all process and rinse tanks. Unlike any system that was understood to be currently commercially and technically available, this was achieved to the entire satisfaction and acceptance of the customer and operates continuously, achieving total solution penetration within the component with a much higher degree of surface activity and product quality.

The fume extraction is a centralised common installation from both legs of the plant and supported by the Plastratum Differential Volumetric tank lid technology. The use of lids is instrumental in reducing the fume extraction volume using a turn down of 70%.

Therefore, it is not only a muchreduced plant size and factory footprint allocation when compared to open tank fume extraction, it also reduces the quantity of expensive heated factory air to atmosphere. Once again this is of great financial benefit for the customer as it reduces operating costs.

Powder Coating architectural profiles requires a pretreatment or ‘passivation’ of the aluminium profile prior to the application of powder. In simple terms, this process completely seals the aluminium and forms a key for the powder coating to adhere to. Twenty years ago, virtually all powder coaters in the UK used chrome-based pretreatment systems as they were easy to use and robust. One company who was just starting out in powder coating architectural profiles at the time was Architectural and Metal Systems, AMS in Cork and they decided to be different.

Most UK and Ireland powder coaters have now switched to chrome-free pretreatment systems, but not before a long-drawn-out debate about the robustness of chrome free systems. With some claiming premature failures with these systems when introduced it has been proven over time that these failures are down to the incorrect use of these pretreatment systems. Chrome free pretreatment systems require much more control than their chromebased counterparts. Today this is borne out by global sample testing undertaken by QUALICOAT where the small number of coating failures observed does not indicate that a chrome or chrome free pretreatment is to blame.

Twenty one years ago, AMS adopted chrome free pretreatment technology when they installed their first coating plant in 2002. Understanding the intricacies of these early systems AMS ensured that the methodology was followed precisely. They were granted a Qualicoat License in 2003 and twenty one years later the company is still using chrome free technology across more than one powder coating plant at their extensive aluminium extrusion, finishing and fabrication facility in Cork.

Following Brexit, the UK grandfathered over from the EU the original termination date for the use of Hexavalent Chromate and incorporated it into UK legislation. The termination date for the permission to use Hexavalent Chromate in the UK is 16th September 2024 and this will be enforced by UK HSE.

Maximise the potential of your pre-treatment system

If you are in the metal finishing industry, then you have many different options when it comes to preparing your products prior to painting. One of those many possibilities for you is to chemically pre-treat your components. The most common types of chemical pre-treatments are applied in immersion or spray systems similar to those in the image.

Specialist contractors may have to be employed for waste removal or disposal, and your staff are often in very close proximity to what on times can be hazardous chemicals. So it would be nice then for pre-treatment chemicals to have the ability of extending the life of the bath. With the new generation coatings, bath life can be extended, and this saves you money. Some of the benefits of using these new generation coatings are;

They can operate at lower temperatures.

They are easy to control, They can process multiple metal through the same stage Both cleaner and conversion coating can sometimes be combined in the same stage. With traditional pre-treatment chemicals, regular removal of sludge from treatment baths is required. Theses maintenance days are not only expensive, they are time consuming, often performed on a weekend with the necessary overtime rates paid to staff.

Customers with traditional set ups often utilise two stages, one for the for the cleaner and one for the conversion coating. Also with traditional products operating anywhere between 35 – 65 degrees, and in the two stages, switching to one cleaner / conversion coating bath at ambient temperature can massively reduce the gas or electric costs of running the process. Set to completely revolutionise the galvanizing industry, Hasco-Thermic Ltd has developed world-leading furnace control technology, transforming how burners are controlled, and allowing businesses to totally enhance sustainability efforts.

Not only does the innovative technology aid efficiency, longevity, and future-proof galvanizing plants, but it’s set to also save time and costs for companies – savings most welcome during this period of rising energy costs.

Wedge Group Galvanizing Ltd is the first to implement this pioneering technology, gradually introducing across their 14 nationwide plants. Our Airmaster Dust Filter equivalent is a pleated cartridge made in two lengths, 450mm (type 1) and 920mm (type 2). The end caps can be Galvanised Steel or Stainless Steel, there are three types of filters available with spun polyester standard, Anti-Static, PTFE media and Anti-Static PTFE.

The Altair dust filter equivalent range are cartridge filters made in several lengths: 600mm, 660mm, 1000mm and 1200mm (Other lengths available). These are available in a range of medias as detailed below.
