TROPHY & ENGRAVING NEWS

TEN TALKS TROPHIES

The history of giving trophies to reward success The practice of giving trophies to reward success dates back to ancient times, where victorious athletes in Greece and Rome were presented with wreaths made of laurel leaves, which were considered a symbol of victory and honour. In medieval Europe, tournaments were held in which knights competed for prizes such as armour, horses, and swords. These competitions eventually evolved into modern sports competitions, where trophies are now commonly awarded to winning individuals or teams.

contexts to recognise achievement or valour.

The first known modern trophy was awarded to a horse named “Diomed”, who won the inaugural running of the Derby in 1780 at Epsom Downs in England. The trophy was a silver cup that weighed over 200 ounces and was donated by the race’s sponsor, Sir Charles Bunbury. This set the precedent for trophies to be awarded in various competitions, including sports, music, and other cultural events.

3. Trophies: While mentioned as an option, it is worth adding that they are often used to recognise excellence in sports or other competitive activities, as well as a reward for success.

Over time, the design of trophies has evolved, with different materials and shapes being used to reflect the nature of the competition or event. Trophies have become not just a symbol of victory but also a symbol of accomplishment and recognition for hard work, dedication, and achievement.

These are just a few examples, but the specific items or rewards given will depend on the context and the preferences of the organisation or individual giving the reward.

Today, trophies are awarded in a wide range of competitions and events, from school sports to international tournaments, and are cherished by recipients as a tangible reminder of their success and accomplishment.

As well as trophies what other items are given to reward success? There are many different items that can be given to reward success, depending on the context and the nature of the achievement.

Here are some examples: 1. Medals or ribbons: These are commonly given in athletic or military

2

2. Certificates or plaques: These are often given in academic or professional contexts to recognise achievement or completion of a program.

4. Gifts or prizes: These can be a wide variety of items, such as clocks, pens, glasswear, electronics, vacations, or experiences, to name just a few, and can be used in a variety of contexts to reward achievement.

When looking for a trophy supplier what should you consider? When looking for a trophy supplier, there are several factors you should consider. Here are a few key considerations: 1. Quality: Look for a supplier who offers high-quality trophies. The quality of the trophy is important, as you want it to last for a long time and be a source of pride for the recipient. 2. Customisation: If you want to personalise your trophies, make sure the supplier offers customisation services. This includes the ability to add custom text or logos to the trophy. 3. Range of options: A good supplier should offer a wide range of options in terms of trophy design, size,

and materials. This will allow you to find the perfect trophy for your needs. 4. Price: Look for a supplier that offers competitive prices. Keep in mind that the cheapest option may not always be the best quality, so balance cost with quality. 5. Reputation: Do some research on the supplier’s reputation before making a purchase. Read reviews and testimonials from other customers to get a sense of their experience with the supplier. 6. Customer service: Make sure the supplier has good customer service and is responsive to any questions or concerns you may have. This is particularly important if you need to make any changes or corrections to your order. TEN magazine is a great way to connect a trophy supplier with a customer, and customers with a trophy supplier! If you are interested in advertising in a future issue of TEN magazine please email Colin Gallimore (sales) at colingallimore@hillmedia.com. AMAYA SALES UK LTD

It’s not all about White Toner …….. Printing on darks and the use of a white base seems to be at the forefront of everyone’s mind in our industry, whether it is for DTG, two step transfer paper for dark shirts, UV printing on dark substrates or the latest euphoria of DTF. I think we are forgetting about life before a white base, and more specifically with transfers in mind, life before the CMYW laser printer. All the white toner allows you to do is to print any design onto a dark garment or substrate. There is a plethora of transfer medias out there that will allow you to decorate white, lights and pastel garments easily with full colour artwork, achieve highly detailed single colour prints on dark shirts and print some great special effects using hot stamping foils. Most companies have a CMYK laser printer somewhere in their business, it might be the office printer used for printing invoices but there is a good chance that if you check for compatibility with your transfer media supplier that some of the heat transfer media they sell will work through your existing printer, so you can utilise your existing hardware to generate some production. First up is the standard laser transfer paper that can achieve full-colour

artwork to be printed onto white, pastel shirts and in some cases bright garments. These transfer papers are usually very cost effective, and whilst washability might not be as good as the more advanced papers, they are great for promotional events. In my opinion they are ideal for solid designs that can be cut around close to the border of the design, otherwise you can see the glue residue. Some transfer brands offer an advanced version of this paper that is suitable for printing on heavier weave products like polo shirts and tote bags. Again, this is a one step paper and still well priced with the added value of providing better coverage on fabrics that are textured. Next in the range is a paper that will work in a CMYK laser printer, we call it Laser Transparent, and it is great because it’s self-weeding and only transfers to the garment where the toner is, so you don’t get the glue mark left behind on the shirt. This makes it

a premium product and more suited to corporate logos and high-end products. A real winner at the moment in our business are the hot stamping foils – we offer over fifty-one shades, and these allow you to achieve a metallic special effect, by applying it to a one colour transfer design. Another tip is these foils can be used with hard surfaces as well, not just garments. If the garment really must be dark then you can decorate it by using single colour 2-step transfers which are available in a range of neon, metallic and matt colours. These don’t even need a CMYK printer, a mono laser printer will do the work, as all you need to do is print your one colour design onto the coloured A foil and then when combined with the glue paper it becomes a self-weeded, colour transfer for dark shirts – imagine a vinyl finish on your shirt without any weeding!! Moving away from garments for the moment there are also transfer papers that can be adhered to light coloured products and run through CMYK laser printers. Waterslide papers will work on candles and jars, and Multi-Trans papers come in mono colours and can be printed onto wood, ceramic, slate and much more. As you can see, there is a wide range of laser transfer opportunities for you with a simple mono or CMYK laser printer and let’s face it, not all garments are black!! Another great win with all these transfer papers mentioned above, is when working with them you don’t need a RIP Software, as this is generally sold to work with the white toner so that’s another hidden win. So, look around you and see if you have a basic printer in your business not being used and contact your transfer paper supplier now to see what options they have. At Amaya, we sell the Forever transfer range of papers and are happy to give you help and advice on what will work with your equipment. Should You Buy Your Next Award Online? 3 Things to Consider Whether you’re opting for a large volume of off-the-shelf trophies, an individual tailor-made award or a commemorative wall plaque to take pride of place at the office – knowing where to get your accolades can be difficult. Sure, you want affordability and a quality finish, but there are a number of other important factors to be considered when choosing the source of your next award. To help, the team at EFX have put together our top three things to consider before buying an award online. So, let’s get into it.

Things to consider when buying awards online #1 How reputable are the brand? When it comes to buying awards online, there are plenty of awards manufacturers to choose from – but not all will offer the same levels of quality, value for money or attention to detail. So, how do you ensure you’re getting all of the above and more? Starting with reputation is a solid place to begin. After all, you want an award supplier you can rely on, not only to make your vision come to life but to be there to help with any questions or queries you might have along the way. If this is your first time buying an award online, be sure to check out company reviews, their portfolio of work and the clients they have worked with in the past. We offer clients a free design service and the option to speak with a member of the team working on your award at any point throughout the process.

And, as the leading British designer and manufacturer of bespoke awards and trophies, you can be confident that you’re in safe hands with us. #2 How good is the customer service? Whether you’re opting for a fully bespoke award or you’re personalising an off-the-shelf trophy, you want to be sure that the company you work with will listen to you and create something that reflects your needs and wants completely. When it comes to creativity, the team at EFX have it in spades – but ultimately, we follow your ideas, offering help and specialist advice along the way. In fact, it’s our strong communication skills, and our talented team’s ability to adapt to any vision, that has allowed us to work with some of the biggest names – from Audi and GQ to CCA Global. What sets us apart and helps us to provide an unrivalled personal service is our state-of-the-art design and manufacturing site that allows us to utilise most materials to create special awards – whatever your industry or vision may be. #3 A variety of materials on offer Whilst traditional metal awards and trophies are still incredibly popular, the option of more unusual materials

is important. It shows you that the company have the skills and capabilities to work with other materials and allows your creativity to run wild. Many business value a commitment to sustainability in their brand ethos, in which case the option of recycled materials and sustainable woods is vital. So, when shopping around for your next accolade, be sure that there is plenty of variety for you to choose from as it is often a reflection on the experience and skill of the company in question.

Got a big event coming up? Contact EFX for your bespoke award Whether you’re back in the office, hosting a virtual event or planning a large ceremony – a custom award can be the perfect way to show appreciation. If you’re looking to buy awards and trophies online, our team are on hand to help ensure that the next award you give blows the recipient away. Choose from either a bespoke award or customise one of our popular off-theshelf trophies and we can guarantee the end result will exceed your expectations. Simply contact EFX to get a free quote. TROPHY & ENGRAVING NEWS

MARCH 2023

EURO TROPHEX 2023

Euro Trophex - bringing over 30 years of service to your industry Trade shows, exhibitions and other events can be an excellent way to showcase your products and services. They give you the opportunity to increase awareness of your business, launch new products and services, network with industry members, explore partnership opportunities, see what competitors are offering, generate new business leads, attract and convert customers.

What is a Trade Show? A trade show is a platform where businesses (exhibitors), professionals and business representatives (visitors) come together under one roof to exchange knowledge and make connections with other like-minded professionals.

salespeople have nobody to convert, so generating enough leads for your marketing funnel is a must. Analysing the competition – what technology are they using, what marketing angle are they taking? It’s good to know what the competition is up to.

Exhibitors book a stand and use this space to connect and engage with visitors to the event. Ideally, the event is used to generate leads, network, promote products and services, and hopefully close a few sales in an organic setting that’s tailored to them and their audience.

Engage with existing customers – existing customers are more likely to invest in new products and services, so you can keep building relations and offering them more benefits.

How can you benefit from exhibiting at a Trade Show?

Account-based marketing – go into a trade show with an idea of who you’d like to speak with, so you can create a strategy that’s more likely to convert them.

There are many reasons why you would choose to exhibit at a trade show, which include: Make sales – the golden ticket to trade show success, hitting a quota or making direct sales is the ultimate definition of winning. Capture leads – without leads

16

Introduce new products/services – new and old customers could benefit from your new product.

Gather feedback – feedback is how you improve services and sales and marketing; you could receive advice that revolutionises how you do things. Spot trends – spotting trends is vital if you want to stay relevant or avoid something that’s a flash in the pan.

TROPHY & ENGRAVING NEWS

MARCH 2023

What should you look at when selecting a trade show? The best success can be gained from participating at an event that has a well-established history. These events usually draw the best reward. The event organiser should have proven methods in place to market the event to the right audience. They will have a database they have accrued over many years of business. The venue should be easily accessed by road or public transport and have plenty of parking. A venue with excellent nearby facilities, hotels, restaurants, entertainment, can also be a bonus if the event is held over more than one day.

Can You Make Money at a Trade Show? Keeping costs down is a benefit when deciding which trade show to exhibit at. Smaller shows tend to be cheaper, so choosing an event that is aimed at your target audience is the key to a successful outcome from exhibiting. Here are some ways you can get a healthy ROI from a trade show, including: Only buy the space you need – the area you buy takes up a significant amount of your budget, so overdoing it can waste money, which is going to eat into your sales. Get an enticing exhibition stand – you can have a tiny space and still

attract people if your stand is attractive, making your area presentable promotes credibility. Organisation is key – there’s a temptation to blindly hand out literature and marketing collateral, putting it at the back of your space makes reps think about engaging first, which is more likely to generate a lead or a sale. Use tech where it’s useful – the whole purpose of a trade show is to generate business through face-toface marketing, so don’t dehumanise the event by using too much technology. Pick the right team – there’s no point in attending an event if you pick the wrong staff. Ideally, it would benefit you if you had people who understand and empathise with customer challenges, but also know when to close deals. Work the aisles – do not limit yourself to the boundary of your stand, you can reach out to passers-by and engage in the aisle. Tell people you’re exhibiting – use as many marketing techniques as you can to create a build-up to the event and get people excited. Utilise all marketing opportunities the event itself offer, these are generally targeted directly at your required audience.

What Do You Need for a Trade Show?

Could You See Success at a Trade Show?

The last thing you want to do is under prepare. Get the following ticked off before you get to your event:

Trade shows aren’t an antiquated form of marketing and sales – they’re proven to generate targeted, high-quality leads and sales. Not every business can benefit from attending trade shows, but they’re certainly worth exploring. Just like trade shows give you the opportunity to better connect with prospective customers, exhibiting at a trade show also allows you to meet existing customers face-to-face. While most of today’s business is conducted over email or phone, face-to-face meetings are undeniably a fantastic way to do business.

Event space – the first thing you need is event space, you’ll have a shock if you turn up and there’s nowhere for you to pitch! Stand with supporting collateral – your stand and marketing collateral are what attract people to your stand. Travel plans – train, bus, plane, car? It would help if you had robust plans in place before you depart. Accommodation – if you’re planning on staying over, which you may want to as events are long, tiring days, reserve in advance as hotels may get booked up prior to the event. Marketing collateral – brochures, leaflets, business cards; get all the material you need and ensure you get plenty. You don’t want to run out. Staff – ask your staff well before the event to ensure they are available to attend, cancelling holidays will not be seen as favourable to you! Remember your staff are the face of the business at the event, get them prepared.

TEN TALKS ENGRAVING

What is engraving? Engraving is an art form that requires precision, attention to detail, and technical expertise. The process involves etching or inscribing a message or design onto a substrate surface. Lets explore the different engraving processes, including hand engraving, computerised engraving, and laser engraving.

Hand Engraving Hand engraving is a traditional technique that involves using a handheld tool to carve the message or design into the substrate surface. This technique is performed by a skilled artisan who has trained for years to perfect their craft. The process requires the use of specialised engraving tools, such as gravers and burins, which come in different sizes and shapes. These tools are used to create lines, shapes, and textures that give the engraving depth and dimension. Hand engraving is a time-consuming process that requires patience, precision, and a steady hand. However, it produces beautiful, unique, and high-quality results that can last for decades.

Computerised Engraving Computerised engraving is a modern technique that involves using a computer-controlled machine to engrave the substrate surface. The process involves designing the message or design on a computer using specialised software. Once the design is finalised, it is sent to the engraving machine, which uses a diamond-tipped tool to etch the design onto the surface. Computerised engraving is faster and more efficient than hand engraving, making it ideal for large-scale engraving projects. It also allows for greater precision and accuracy, making

18

it possible to reproduce intricate designs and logos.

Laser Engraving Laser engraving is a highly precise and efficient engraving technique that uses a laser beam to etch the message or design onto the substrate surface. The process involves programming the design into the laser engraving machine, which then uses a highpowered laser to vaporise the material on the surface, creating the engraving. Laser engraving is a non-contact process that produces precise and clean lines, making it ideal for engraving intricate designs and logos. It is also faster than hand engraving and computerised engraving, making it ideal for high-volume engraving projects. In conclusion, engraving is an art form that requires skill, precision, and technical expertise. Whether you choose hand engraving, computerised engraving, or laser engraving, each process has its unique benefits and advantages. Hand engraving produces beautiful and unique results but is timeconsuming, while computerised engraving and laser engraving are faster and more efficient, making them ideal for high-volume engraving projects. No matter which process you choose, engraving is an excellent way to personalise and commemorate special achievements and events.

TEN TALKS RETAIL

Pet boom proves fruitful for trophy, engraving, award and personalisation retail sector Over half of the UK population now owns a pet, and according to Kennel Club figures, pet registrations soared by a quarter during the Covid lockdown. With companion animal ownership booming over the past three years, retailers have a prime opportunity to showcase pet care products as an increasingly lucrative and growing category. More than 20 million domestic cats and dogs now live in the UK, of which a total of 3.2 million households acquired a pet in the last three years. Further to this is the added prediction that a further 10% of British households currently without pets intend to get one in the next six months.

24

Data by leading pet care brand Bob Martin identified a tenfold increase in demand of people looking to purchase a companion animal, with online search volumes for cat and dog purchases and adoptions at all-time highs. Pets are of course part of the family and the UK pet care sector is expected to expand to more than £7bn, with dog food alone worth more than £1bn.

So what does this mean for the trophy, engraving, awards, medals and personalisation industry? By equipping yourself with the right knowledge and enthusiasm you can capitalise on increased sales by looking at the products and processes you can offer your customers to meet this growing and increasingly loyal consumer demand. Aurelie Gayraud, Senior Brand Manager at Bob Martin, sees that this rapidly growing market of

TROPHY & ENGRAVING NEWS

MARCH 2023

pet owners could prove fruitful for the retail sector in the UK. She comments: “Retailers that adapt to this pet category trend and those who ensure the growing consumer demand is met, will be presented with an excellent opportunity to drive sales by catering to the UK’s growing population of feline and canine loving customers in particular.” Dog owners alone in the UK are spending at least £100.00 a year on average on gifts for their pets. Add to this the added amount spent on basic pet needs like collars, name tags, pet bowls, personalised items, social activities, toys, clothing, and more … the list is endless. Brits love to splash out on their pets as much as they do on their family and friends, so now is the time to capitalise on the pet ownership boom, if you haven’t already ventured into this area of business, and look at the vast selection of products and processes you can offer your customers.

Trophies, Awards and Medals With this increase in domestic pets, the demand for training, socialising, competition and other group activities has also see an increase. With the rise alone in dog owners, more and more clubs have opened their doors, and the need for various reward products will be required. Trophies, awards and medals are the perfect solution to this increased demand. They come in all shapes and sizes. From large trophies to give to the winning team at a fly ball race, to a medal for the best puppy of the month at the training class. Now is the perfect time to widen your range to include a variety of options in these areas.

Products that can be personalised The addition of a pet to a home is seen as another member of the family. As soon as the new family member arrives so does a trip to the pet store to buy collars, leads, bowls, bedding, toys and other necessary items for that pets comfort. One of the largest areas of business a new dog brings is the legal requirement that while on a highway or in a public place a dog must wear a collar that bears the name, address, and contact details of its owner. This should either be inscribed on the collar, engraved on a plate on the collar, or worn as a separate tag that attaches to the ring on the collar. Alongside this you could also look at the continued increasing popularity of personalisation. You could take a look at collars, bedding and clothing that can be printed. Also items that the pet owners themselves may want. From photo frames to pet memorial items to remember their beloved pet after they have passed. If space is limited there are plenty of small items that can be personalised. The list is endless, so is the revenue opportunity this brings.

26

material, whether you want to do high volume or just one off pieces, you can choose between a few different printing techniques for personalisation, but let’s look at Sublimation and Heat Transfer.

Personalisation Processes You could not only supply a new range of products but also invest in the equipment required to offer a personalisation marking or engraving service for these items. Adding this service could potentially double your revenue from each sale. To add a personalisation service to your business you can look at various options. Depending on the budget you have set and what kind of personalisation you are looking at offering, there are affordable solutions. Engraving and Printing are two of the options.

Let’s look at Laser Engraving The laser engraving process works by creating high heat during the engraving process, which essentially causes the material to vaporise. It’s a quick process, as the material is vaporised with each pulse it creates a cavity in the surface that is noticeable to the eye and touch. To form deeper marks with the laser engraver you repeat with several passes. You can buy a laser engraver at a very reasonable cost and there are quite a few to choose from. With a quick call you can discuss your requirements to find out which machine best suits your needs, your budget and space, whether you are looking to engrave one piece bespoke items or higher volume work, there will be something perfect for you.

What about Printing for Personalisation You can print on all different types of products including those made of fabric, metal, plastic, ceramic, or other

TROPHY & ENGRAVING NEWS

MARCH 2023

Sublimation Printing essentially is the process of embedding ink into the material through heat. The material to be printed must be made out of polyester or have a polymer coating. As the name suggests, sublimation converts solid to gas without the intermediate liquid form. Thus, the sublimation ink is vaporised and released quickly into the material being printed on. Sublimation printing is outstanding for fine lines and details, and arguably is one of the best methods for all-over printing. With low set up costs, it is great for small runs, and the printing is so close to permanent it’s pretty much unbeatable. Another benefit of this type of printing is that you’re not limited to fabrics. Sublimation printing is great for hard media too: for example mugs, pens, clocks, coasters, tins, and much more. You can buy ‘blanks’ that have been pre-coated with a polymer to make the item suitable for sublimation printing. Heat transfer is a comparatively more straightforward process that uses a heat transfer paper to transfer the print onto material such as a t-shirt. It can be compared to direct-to-garment printing but is considerably cheaper. The print is not embedded into the material but is like a layer on top of it. Heat transfer uses pigment ink and transfers paper. This method uses heat and pressure to transfer an image or design from a piece of transfer paper onto the desired object. Many objects can be printed on, including t-shirts, cups, mouse pads, memo pads, wood and ceramic plates and tiles. Now is the time to diversify and get ahead of your competitors. HYBRID SERVICES

Hybrid introduce new Mimaki direct-to-film printer to TEN magazine readers Following the success of its recent debut, Mimaki’s exclusive distributor for the UK and Ireland, Hybrid Services, has announced the addition of the TxF150-75 direct-to-film (DTF) inkjet printer. The new model is specifically designed for those entering or expanding in the apparel decoration sector and is already proving a popular choice for those looking for a timesaving, stable, and productive solution. Offering a versatile garment decorating solution, the Mimaki DTF works on cotton, polyester and polyester blended materials, and the print can be applied to both light and

28

dark coloured fabrics. Delivering a timesaving workflow compared to other garment printing methods, the new TxF150-75 removes the labourintensive process of plate creation in screen printing and the required weeding in traditional vinyl heat transfer. With Mimaki’s reputation for reliability, the TxF150-75 includes a built-in ink circulation system and degassed ink pack design to ensure consistent printing is maintained. A nozzle check unit and nozzle recovery system further enable the printing process to be carried out with minimal user intervention and efficiency. DTF printing provides an easy production process. The design is printed directly onto a special film, then sprinkled with hot-melt powder, and once heated and dried, the print is ready to be applied to the fabric using a heat press. and environmental commitments, Mimaki inks are OEKO-TEX® ECO PASSPORT certified. “We’re delighted to add the new Mimaki DTF printer to our line-up for Sign & Digital UK,” states Duncan Jefferies, Hybrid’s Head of Marketing and Business Development. “This innovative device will sit alongside a broad range of our very latest technology on the Hybrid stand, and provides a real alternative for the apparel sector that addresses key challenges seen with other technologies.” Distributed in the UK and Ireland by Hybrid Services, the TxF150-75 will be commercially available via its network of specialist resellers from April 2023.
