NOVA CHROME UK ARE PROUD TO ANNOUNCE THE LAUNCH OF THE MUTOH XPERTJET
Nova Chrome UK, well known in the industry for their dye sublimation systems, are proud to announce the launch of the Mutoh XpertJet 461UF, 661UF and 1462UF direct to object solutions. With their previous success offering Mutoh’s waterbased printers, the Anglesey based firm were recently appointed distributors for the UV lineup by Graphtec GB.
These systems offer a range of benefits for those offering most forms of trophies, awards or recognition – such as ID badges, cards and similar products. First amongst these benefits is the ability to quickly and easily customise virtually any product or surface with a full colour,
UV stable print. The possibilities here need no explaining – not only does a UV printer help streamline production of items like trophy centres, name plates and speciality products like crystal awards, but it also opens the doors to a whole host of personalised products. Items such as Point of Sale (POS) displays, signage, photo panels and more become simple to produce and represent additional revenue streams with the potential for high markups.
The three solutions currently offered do share a few common features, such as their ability to print CMYK with an under base of White to help lift the print on coloured substrates, and Varnish to add a gloss finish to either part or entirety of the print. They do however differ in their respective sizes and price points. The XpertJet 461UF offers an A3+ print area, and is targeted towards the more cost
conscious, or those with limited space. The XpertJet 661UF – Nova Chrome’s flagship offering – brings an A2+ print area, automatic levelling table and object detection, whilst the 1462UF is a production focused unit, suitable for larger runs and production environments. Whichever system is used, print quality is high and costs are economical. As an example, volume production of 220 medals using the 1462UF can take as little as 15 minutes – with a low total cost of £1.61p in ink used* (based on White+CMYK, with a printed area of 30mm x 30mm on each unit).
Supplied with the system is Vertelith, Mutoh’s own RIP solution. This powerful piece of software gives the user a huge amount of flexibility in building layouts, as well as the ability to structure multiple layers of inks to create 3D effects –useful for Braille signage, for example.
Taking Awards & Recognition to New Heights!
The personalised trophy industry is vast with everything from Sports to Gaming being recognised with personalised trophies and medals. The Industry has long used the likes of digital printers for sticker inserts and impact and extraction engravers for glass and metal marking. Time and production costs are a large factor to the end cost of a completed item.
Now is the time to reduce costs, increase productivity and build a wider product offering. Reduce media costs to £0 and increase production by more than 100% - easily achievable by switching to a New MUTOH Direct to Object printer.

PARTNERS WITH
OUR FANS ASKED, AND WE ANSWERED
Epilog Laser Fans – ELFs for short – are some of the most creative engravers around. The ELF group on Facebook has so many engraving projects and examples of the versatility of Epilog machines. In addition, most ELFs are happy to offer expertise and advice to newcomers.
Here’s a look at 10 of the most frequently asked questions our fans ask, along with answers from our experts!
1. What are some recommendations for hardwood engraving?
Mask the wood. Masking helps reduce residue from seeping into engraved areas and makes for easy clean up.
Use “bottom up” engraving. This is a feature in Epilog’s print driver that allows users to engrave from the bottom of the design up, instead of engraving from the top down. It also helps reduce smoke and debris being pulled into the engraving area as the laser head moves.
Clean with Pledge, Simple Green or any citrus-cleaner.
2. I’m a little nervous about etching glass! Any suggestions?
First, remember that not all glass is created equal. While you may think you need more expensive glass to get a great engraving, that’s not always the case. Many of our customers use glassware from restaurant suppliers or dollar-discount stores, both of which engrave beautifully.
We’ve also developed the following tips that help ensure a nice, frosty engraved finish:
Using a lower resolution, around 300 DPI, produces a better result on glass as you separate the dots you are engraving.
Change the black in your graphic to 80% black to improve the engraving quality.
Running with a Jarvis dithering pattern in the driver (you’ll find this under the raster speed and power settings) will also help provide a smoother finish.
Some people find that applying a thin, wet sheet of newspaper or paper towel a
little larger than the engraving area also helps with heat dissipation and improves the engraving. Just be sure that there are no wrinkles in the paper after it is applied.
Using your finger or a paper towel, apply a thin coat of liquid dish soap—any kind will do—over the area to be engraved. That will dissipate the heat when engraving.
Polish the area with a ScotchBrite pad or something similar to eliminate shards of glass.
3. What are some tips for engraving on plywood or balsa?
Generally speaking, this material is cut with a laser more than it’s engraved. For engraving, we’d suggest starting with the recommended wood engraving settings in our manual. Plywood can be tricky and inconsistent in terms of cutting, due to the various layers of glue found within it. Balsa seems to cut very nicely and many of our customers use this medium to build various types of models.
4. I’m thinking of expanding my business to engrave leather. Will that be difficult?
Not at all—leather engraves and cuts beautifully with a laser! Some of our users custom etch leather journals, coasters and much more.
5. What are the best settings for engraving on leatherette?
This is going to depend on your machine and wattage, but we’d start with the recommended settings for “leather” in Epilog’s user manual. When in doubt, start with a relatively high speed and low power. If you don’t move the item being engraved, it is easy to add a little more power or reduce the speed and run the job again until you get the look you want.
6. I hate to waste materials. What cool projects can you create with scrap pieces from other projects?
Scrap materials are great not only for creating new projects, but also for use as practice pieces for more challenging engravings, such as photographs. We’ve seen customers make all kinds of things from scrap, such as small acrylic edge-lit signage, ornaments, name tags, and lots more!
7. I have a Mac. Can I use it with my Epilog Laser?
Yes! Epilog’s current product lineup can be used with Mac Operating Systems. Our Pulse app lets you connect the laser to your device in one of three ways: Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or USB. Once you connect your device you can open a web browser window, type in the IP address of the laser, and hit enter. The app loads automatically, and you can then import various files and send them to the laser for processing. If you have a legacy system, we recommend using Parallels or Bootcamp to power the lasers from their systems, or simply purchase an adequate PC and dedicate that machine only to the laser.
8. Any tips for proper maintenance? How and when should I clean my machine?
The biggest piece of maintenance advice is to keep your system clean, especially the optics. Clean optics help ensure that your laser produces the most precise engraving and cutting results. Other maintenance activities will depend on the model of your machine and are included in your owner’s manual. You can also find maintenance videos in our online training site and knowledge base.
9. Can I maximize my laser investment with apparel applications?
Absolutely. Epilog systems can both cut and directly etch all kinds of fabrics. We’ve seen users engraving fleece pullovers, leather jackets, aprons, napkins, and more.
10. Can you recommend inexpensive substrates I can play around with?
This is where scrap materials come in very handy for testing speed and power settings, experimenting with different resolutions, etc. Many of our users go to the big home improvement stores for inexpensive wood and tile (ceramic, marble, etc.) to test and play around with. Thrift stores are also great places to find lots of different low-cost substrates to experiment with. Additionally, “dollar store” retailers often have glassware (pint glasses, wine glasses, beer mugs, etc.) that engrave beautifully.

CO2 VS FIBRE LASER CUTTERS/ENGRAVERS
The primary difference between a CO2 laser and a fibre laser cutter/engraver is simply how the laser beam is generated and directed towards the target material. This defines what materials they can work with, due to the differences in laser wavelength and power.
These two technologies are generally much more practical, flexible and effective when compared to traditional methods of engraving. Both machines can engrave or mark a diverse array of
materials, however, fibre lasers are designed to work with metals whereas CO2 lasers are compatible with a wider range of materials, typically, but not exclusively, non-metals.
CO2 Laser Cutters and Engravers:
CO2 Laser Machines are extremely popular thanks to being cost-effective and highly accurate. They are a particularly well-suited tool for cutting and engraving a variety of materials, from card and leather, to wood, plastics and other non-metals. Many sectors favour CO2 machines; education, industry, small business, and even home use due to their lower cost yet exceptional quality. Our flexible range of machines suit all budgets, from desktop machines such as our LS3020 desktop laser cutter, to industry-level flatbeds.
Advantages of CO2 Lasers:
- Versatility
CO2 Lasers are compatible with an array of materials, notably non-metals.
- Precision
The fine response of these machines enables incredibly precise cutting and engraving.
ENGRAVE WITH EXCELLENCE:
CO2 and Fibre Laser Engravers
HPC Laser’s range of CO2 and fibre laser engravers can be used for many purposes, from personalising gifts to enhancing industrial production processes. Machines are available with either a CO2 or Fibre laser source and a galvo head, allowing you to choose the machine most suited to your requirements.
Benefits of Laser Engraving Machines:
Speed and Efficiency
Precision and Accuracy
Versatility
CO2 engravers can be up to 10x faster than a conventional laser cutter, enhancing productivity.
Laser engravers provide extremely precise and detailed engravings, with consistency and repeatability.
Laser engravers can process a wide range of materials, depending on the laser source. These can be metals, fabrics, wood, ceramics, and more!
Low maintenance
Galvo laser engraving machines have fewer moving parts and need less maintenance than traditional engraving tools or CO2 laser cutters, reducing downtime and maintenance costs.
Large bed sizes mean CO2 lasers can be better suited to batch production than fibre lasers.
Disadvantages:
- CO2 lasers struggle to engrave highly reflective materials, such as metals, without the use of a marking compound.
- CO2 mirrors can sometimes become misaligned and need to be adjusted. We offer training so that machine owners are equipped to carry out these adjustments themselves.
Fibre Laser Engravers:
Fibre laser machines are dedicated engraving machines that offer unparalleled speed, accuracy, energy efficiency and repeatability. They are typically suited to engraving mild and stainless steels, as well as non-ferrous metals.
Advantages of Fibre Lasers:
- Speed
Fiber laser engraving machines can work in just a fraction of the time that a CO2 laser can thanks to the way in which fast reacting motor driven mirrors can respond to instructions from the controller.
- Maintenance
No mirror or lens cleaning, nor beam alignment meaning maintenance costs are much lower.
Disadvantages
- Fibre lasers have less versatility in materials that they can cut and engrave, and cannot be used on most nonmetals.
- Fibre lasers typically have a limited engraving area, typically 300mm x 300mm maximum.
Ultimately, your operational requirements decide how to choose a laser engraving machine. If you’re looking to engrave and cut non-metals such as acrylic, wood, card, leather and fabrics a CO2 Laser is perfect. There’s a reason this is such a widely used piece of equipment: its exceptional precision allows the most detailed engraving and can even reproduce photographic images. CO2 engraving machines will engrave onto a wide range of uncoated metals such as mild and stainless steels, aluminium, brass and copper. However, a marking compound such as Thermark needs to be applied before engraving. A fibre laser engraving machine can produce extremely fast high-resolution results on a range of uncoated and coated metals but they are generally not suited to plastics and woods.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT BUYING A PLASTIC TROPHY
Plastic trophies and awards are one of the most popular trophy styles of 2023, but what is it about plastic that’s making more and more people choose it as their perfect trophy material?
In this article we’ll look at all the pros and cons of choosing a plastic trophy, the different options, styles and customisations you can choose, and why plastic is actually one of the best choices if you’re looking for a sustainable award.
What’s the difference between plastic and acrylic?
Acrylic is actually a specific type of plastic, one that is generally high quality, easy to manufacture, comes in a wide range of colours and can even be made from recycled materials.
So while all acrylic is technically plastic, not all plastic is acrylic! And it’s important to know the difference, as there can be huge differences in price, quality, sustainability and the level of customisation you can get.
When you’re searching for a trophy or award, you’ll often find that a search for “plastic” brings up cheap, low quality products made out of thin, moulded plastic.
But if you look for “acrylic”, you’ll find a much better standard of product and material.
Knowing the difference between standard plastic and acrylic can help you find the best trophy style for you.
Off the shelf and custom plastic trophies
When it comes to plastic awards, plaques, medals and trophies, there is a big variation in quality and price.
You can get cheap plastic trophies that are ideal for buying in bulk or for a novelty gift.
But you can also get high quality, custom plastic trophies made from acrylic that come in intricate, unique designs.
And there’s also a midpoint between the two – off the shelf acrylic awards that come in set designs, but can easily be personalised with digital printing and laser engraving.
Custom plastic trophies
Bespoke plastic trophies are one of the most popular trophy styles, and are often the material of choice for prestigious awards.
One of the big reasons for this is that many trophy manufacturers are providing 100% recycled acrylic. This is a huge plus point for any event or organisation that’s looking for a sustainable trophy option.
It’s also a really versatile material, which comes in lots of different colours and opacities, meaning you can create really unusual and interesting designs.
One of our favourite acrylic designs this year is the Soho House Award. This trophy was designed to look like the iconic Picante cocktail, and was created in moulded acrylic and resin that
looked exactly like the famous drink – complete with a couple of ice cubes and a golden chilli!
Personalised plastic trophies
An off the shelf award is one that’s already been designed, but is customisable by picking the colour and size, and personalising with digital printing.
Acrylic is the perfect base for digital printing, as you can select the perfect shade and translucency to complement and highlight the graphics. It also provides a smooth surface for the process, reducing the possibility of imperfections.
This type of award is often the best option if you’re looking for something a little more affordable than a fully unique design, but still want to have a personalised finish, and a higher level of quality than you get with a mass-produced plastic trophy.
Cheap plastic awards
Sometimes all you’re looking for is something cheap and cheerful. Maybe that’s because you’re working to a very tight budget, or you’re just looking for a novelty item.
In these cases, a cheap, mass produced plastic trophy may do the trick.
However, it’s worth noting that these items are usually pretty terrible for the environment. The plastic they’re made from isn’t recycled or sustainable, and they may even be shipped in from other countries too, adding to your carbon footprint.
Engrave onto a huge range of giftware, signage, trophies, tools and industrial products
Laser pointer for quick set-up and easy production
Easily-applied nose cones for precise depth-regulation
USB connection with LAN network connectivity
Includes new Vectric V Carve software
Free delivery, installation and basic training of any NEW Roland DE-3 Engraver within a radius of 100 miles
£5,450+VAT
We also have a large selection of refurbished machines and part exchange on your old machine and lease purchase is available
At EFX we are committed to sustainability, so if you’re looking for a cheap trophy option, we highly recommend something a little different – our sustainable wooden medals.
These are priced at as little as £2.50 each when you purchase 10, and can be printed or engraved with a design and text of your choice.
Because they’re made from bamboo, they are better than carbon neutral – they’re actually carbon negative, meaning producing them removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere instead of adding it.
So, before you spend money on a cheap plastic trophy that adds to the planet’s plastic waste – please consider a bamboo alternative. Not only are they still very affordable, they’re also customisable AND environmentally friendly too – wins all round!
Can plastic awards really be sustainable?
Yes! Some trophy manufacturers provide the option of using 100% recycled acrylic, which means that your trophy can still be sustainable – even in plastic!
What’s more, using sustainable manufacturing processes, power and waste management can also keep the environmental impact of your trophy down.
At EFX, we even go a couple of steps further, ensuring that all our packaging is also recycled and sustainable, and planting trees for every order we take too.
Should I choose a plastic trophy?
We believe that plastic is a fantastic material for creating awards, plaques and more.
Its versatility and fantastic array of colour and design options make it a really good option for unique and quirky award designs, and if you choose recycled acrylic, you can even maintain your green credentials.
Whether you choose an off the shelf design or create something truly original, high quality acrylic can be the ideal material choice.
And if you’re looking for something more affordable, then we highly recommend choosing sustainable bamboo over cheap plastic – not only will you get a higher quality, sustainable product, they’re also easy to customise and look fantastic too!
Whatever you choose for your next award, EFX can help you find the perfect trophy. Get in touch with us today to get a quote or to find out more.

THE SYNERGY OF RETAIL AND TRADE SHOWS IN THE TROPHY, AWARDS, MEDALS, ENGRAVING AND PERSONALISATION INDUSTRY
In an industry where craftsmanship, customisation, and innovation are at the forefront, retail and trade shows play pivotal, complementary roles. The trophy and awards sector, deeply rooted in tradition yet continuously evolving, thrives on the symbiotic relationship between these two pillars. Together, they drive growth, inspire creativity, and ensure that businesses stay competitive in a fast-paced market.
Retail: The Customer Connection
Retailers are the frontline of the trophy and awards industry, translating industry trends into personalised products that resonate deeply with customers. They aren’t just selling trophies and awards; they are curators of recognition, helping clients celebrate achievements in meaningful and memorable ways. While trade shows spark innovation, retail is where these innovations come to life. The relationship between trade shows and retail is one of continuous feedback and adaptation. Retailers’ observations at trade shows shape their inventory choices and marketing strategies, while
customer feedback on new products and trends informs what will be showcased at future trade shows. This cyclical interaction ensures that the industry remains dynamic and responsive, with retail serving as a vital touchpoint for understanding customer preferences and expectations.
Trade Shows:
The Innovation Engine
Trade shows are the lifeblood of the trophy and awards industry, offering a unique platform for showcasing the latest products, technologies, and trends. Established events like Euro Trophex bring together manufacturers, suppliers, and retailers, creating an environment where innovation is not just displayed but
celebrated. These gatherings are more than exhibitions; they are dynamic hubs where industry players exchange ideas, discover new advancements, and forge partnerships that propel the industry forward. For retailers, attending trade shows is essential. Here, they gain first-hand access to the latest designs, materials, and technologies. From cutting-edge engraving machines to eco-friendly materials, trade shows offer a glimpse of what will soon be in demand. Retailers can interact with suppliers, explore custom solutions, and place orders that will set their offerings apart from the competition. Additionally, they gain insight into emerging trends, enabling them to anticipate customer needs and stay ahead of the curve.
Bridging the Gap: Staying Ahead with the Latest Innovations, Customisation, and Personalisation
Retailers can find the latest, most innovative trophies and awards at trade shows, ensuring their product offerings and services remain fresh and exciting.

By exploring cutting-edge designs, materials, and technologies at the event, retailers stay ahead of industry trends, continually delighting customers with unique, high-quality products that stand out from the competition.
A key intersection between trade shows and retail is customisation, which increasingly drives the trophy and awards industry. Customers now seek personalised products that reflect the individuality of the achievements they celebrate. At established trade shows such as Euro Trophex, retailers can explore new customisation technologies, such as laser engraving and 3D printing, and see them in action. These innovations empower retailers to offer more personalised options, attracting a wider customer base.
The insights and tools gained at trade shows enable retailers to better meet their customers' needs by offering a broader range of options, the latest innovations, faster turnaround times, and superior quality. The added ability to deliver on customisation not only enhances customer satisfaction but also builds brand loyalty, as customers are more likely to return to a retailer who consistently meets their unique needs.
Building Industry Resilience
The synergy between trade shows and retail also contributes to the overall resilience of the trophy and awards industry. In times of economic uncertainty or shifting market conditions, this relationship becomes even more critical. Trade shows offer a space for industry players to strategise, share insights, and adapt to changes collectively. Retailers, in turn, bring these strategies to life, adjusting their offerings and customer engagement tactics to reflect the current landscape.
By working together, trade shows and retail create a feedback loop that keeps the industry vibrant and responsive. They ensure that the trophy and awards industry remains adaptable, capable of meeting both the challenges and opportunities that arise. This collaboration not only sustains the industry but also positions it for continued growth and innovation.
Looking Ahead: A Partnership for the Future
As the trophy and awards industry looks to the future, the partnership between retail and trade shows will
remain a cornerstone of its success. The evolution of digital technologies, the increasing importance of sustainability, and the growing demand for hyperpersonalised products all point to a future where this collaboration will be more important than ever.
Retailers must continue to leverage the insights and innovations gained at trade shows to refine their offerings and enhance customer experiences. Likewise, trade shows must keep providing the platforms for discovery and connection that fuel the industry’s growth. Together, they can navigate the challenges of a rapidly changing world and shape a future where the trophy and awards industry continues to thrive.
In this symbiotic relationship, trade shows and retail are not just working together—they are co-creating the future of recognition and celebration. The continued success of the trophy and awards industry depends on this collaboration, and as both evolve, they will undoubtedly unlock new possibilities that benefit businesses and customers alike.

LIGHTBURN: The Ultimate Software for Precision Trophy Engraving By HPC Laser
Supported Laser Machines
LightBurn is a powerful interfacing software designed for laser cutting and engraving. It’s compatible with multiple operating systems, including Windows, and macOS and supports a wide range of laser machines. For trophy engravers, precision, efficiency, and versatility are crucial. Trophies commemorate significant achievements and milestones, so ensuring highquality engraving is essential. At HPC Laser, we care about our customers’ individual experiences with their laser machines, which is why we recommend LightBurn as the superior software for trophy engravers, offering features that specifically cater to this industry’s needs.
LightBurn is versatile, supporting various laser machines including:
CO2 Lasers: For cutting and engraving non-metallic materials like wood and acrylic.
Laser Engravers: Ideal for detailed tasks on wood, leather, and plastics.
Fibre Laser Engravers: Ideal for detailed engraving on metallic products.
Diode Lasers: Commonly used for engraving and cutting materials like wood and plastic.
Benefits of LightBurn in Trophy Engraving
Precision and Detail
Trophy engraving demands high precision, whether for fine text, intricate designs, or detailed logos. LightBurn excels by offering precise control over laser settings such as power, speed, and frequency. These controls enable engravers to produce sharp, clean edges and detailed engravings, ensuring each trophy is engraved to perfection, reflecting the importance of the occasion it commemorates.
User-Friendly Design Tools
A major advantage of LightBurn is its integrated design capabilities. Unlike some software that requires importing designs, LightBurn also allows users to create and edit designs directly within the software. Tools for vector graphics editing, text manipulation, and node adjustments make it easy for users to add personalised details like names and dates. This streamlined workflow saves time and reduces errors.
Compatibility with Materials
Trophies are made from various materials, including acrylic, metal, glass, and wood. LightBurn’s broad compatibility with machines that can cut
and engrave these materials makes it versatile for trophy engravers. The software includes a material library where you can store preset settings for different materials, simplifying the engraving process. Meaning that you can set up presets which Lightburn can use to automatically adjust laser settings for different materials, ensuring consistent quality across various types of trophies.
Simulation and Preview Features
LightBurn’s simulation and preview tools allow users to visualise the final output
before starting the engraving process, and view an estimated time for the job to complete. These features are particularly valuable in trophy engraving, where mistakes can be costly, and efficiency is key. By previewing the laser’s path and the final result, engravers can avoid errors and make necessary adjustments before engraving.
Efficiency and CostEffectiveness
In a business where speed and accuracy are crucial, LightBurn’s real-time control
over laser settings ensures quick and efficient adjustments. This efficiency, combined with its affordability, makes LightBurn a cost-effective choice for trophy engravers. The upfront cost is not considerably high, and annual license renewals are even more affordable. Given its extensive features and regular updates, LightBurn offers significant value for money.
Conclusion
LightBurn provides a comprehensive set of tools that cater to the specific needs of trophy engraving. Its precision, user-friendly design interface, versatility with materials, and advanced features make it the superior choice for engraving high-quality products. Whether you're a seasoned professional or new to lasering, LightBurn's powerful features and affordable pricing offer the flexibility and control needed to create exceptional trophies that capture the significance of the achievements they celebrate.
