WHEN A LASER JUST WON’T CUT IT

Laser engravers v CNC engravers

Laser engravers/cutters

Since the introduction of lasers into the engraving industry in the late 1980’s we have been in awe of their speed, accuracy, and versatility! However, the average laser has its limitations when it comes to engraving and cutting metals even with Fiber or Yag sources, unless you are prepared to invest tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of pounds it is unlikely you will be able to achieve the results you require. These systems are well beyond the reach of the average workshop budget, and this is where CNC equipment should be considered as a capable and cost-effective alternative!

CNC engravers and routers

Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) machines have been around since 1952, when Richard Kegg, in collaboration with MIT, developed the first CNC milling machine in the USA. This gained momentum in later years with the invention of the microchip and development of computers making the technology user friendly and more affordable.

In many industries the CNC engraver/router is the essential cog in the manufacturing process. Being used for part marking, memorials, jewellery, electrical, metal plaques, basically any application that requires deep engraving or metal cutting. Like all technologies the world of CNC has evolved over the years with more efficient and faster components, better tooling, and software with features like automatic height sensing, auto tool changing and 3D carving.

Which technology is right for me?

The short answer is both, Laser and CNC, as this would cover virtually all engraving shop requirements. But the main constraint here is budget and getting value for money. The technology will be determined by the main business application please see refer to the table below:

THE IMPORTANCE OF CUSTOMISATION EQUIPMENT FOR YOUR BUSINESS

Customisation and personalisation are crucial to help you grow and develop your existing business. With increased competition and changing consumer demands, expanding your ability to personalise products will help you stay ahead of your competitors.

A recent trend we are seeing with our existing customers and new accounts, is people looking to diversify into different types of applications to be able to meet their customer’s needs. The traditional embroidery company cannot survive or grow if they only offer embroidery, and sign makers will turn a living if they offer signage, car wraps and banners but could do so much more by adding other equipment to their portfolio and widening their product range.

At Amaya Sales UK we can help you with this as we have the widest range of customisation equipment in the UK market, and we offer our customers guidance, installation, training, and ongoing support on all this machinery together with ongoing business support.

So, if you are currently producing trophies, either from home as a small business, or as part of a larger organisation think about the other personalised products you could offer to your existing customer base.

The key to knowing there is more opportunity out of your customer is something we are very passionate about, and we identify it as the difference between ‘listening’ and ‘hearing.’ Two totally different things. You hear what your customer is saying, advise them and take the order, but do you listen to what else they are saying?

Do you listen to what their business is all about and what they actually do?

Do you listen for any golden nuggets of information where you could offer an additional item, product, or service?

Possibly not, given that most of the time all we are worried about is getting the job right that they initially enquired about, on time.

Old School rules – Listen to what the customer is truly saying. The customer has asked for 3 trophies for an end of term football tournament. Do not just pay attention to what the wording is they want on the trophy. If you listen to what they are saying, then their organisation may require the addition of football shirts, training tops, boot bags.

The football shirts will most probably need a sponsors’ logo on the front, and names and numbers on the back, and that could be for a home and away kit. Is there a potential for banners at the ground, or other sports printed merchandise?

By offering a wider product range, you will start to attract a wider customer base and that could include for example an events company needing some T Shirts for an up-and-coming exhibition, then you should also be sowing the seed of ID badges, Pop up displays, branded pens, USB sticks, notebooks, and other branded merchandise.

At Amaya, we offer a range of different equipment with different investment levels, capabilities, and end products that you can produce. Here’s a little about them:

Transfer printing is the most versatile form of printing out there and gives you the lowest start-up cost for full-colour printing onto dark products, using a White Toner Printer. This is a desktop solution, with zero maintenance and by printing onto a selection of different

transfer papers you will be able to print onto most fabrics and substrates, such as cotton, polyester, mixed fabric, nylon, leather, denim, paper, wood, felt and much more. Get started from as little as £3495+vat.

DTG or DTF printing is another solution that is great for cotton-based or polyester products and predominantly clothing. Its key benefit is the exceptionally high quality of the print so if you want to focus more on a fashion brand offering this is a great solution.

Print & Cut machines are also great for producing transfers on sportswear and workwear but by simply changing the basic media in the machine you can also produce stickers, banners, signage, posters, pretty much anything promotional that can be sold.

14 TROPHY & ENGRAVING NEWS AMAYA SALES UK

Desktop machines are available from £3,899+vat.

UV printing is a great way to decorate anything that is a hard substrate –from pens, memory sticks and notepads, to keyboards, baubles, and doormats. With entry level now starting from as little as £7,999+vat this is a great opportunity alongside your trophy business.

Embroidery is the most established form of garment decoration out there as it gives quality, longevity, and an extremely high profit margin per piece.

Our modular embroidery machines are unique in two keys way. Modularity means you can start with a one head machine and then as your business grows add additional heads to cope with your production, which will be the fastest and most efficient production you can find from any machine.

Secondly, as a novice to embroidery, the patented autotensioning offered on the Melco EMT16X will take the stress out of learning embroidery.

Whatever fabric you want to embroider, the machine will adapt to it.

New machines start from £11,950+vat but we do offer Amaya used and approved machines also.

There is so much choice and at Amaya we pride ourselves on helping and advising customers to take the right route forward for their business. We’ve helped thousands of individuals get started and the real reward for us is watching them grow. We’ll listen to what your business does, who your customer base is, if you have any premises restrictions and what you are looking to achieve and then suggest the most versatile equipment investment for you.

We can also point you in the direction of financing your equipment, which can be the most tax efficient solution too.

With showrooms in both Nottingham and Hampshire you are welcome by appointment to view any of the equipment in action and to discuss your future plans. So, pick up the phone now and call Amaya on 02392 590281 to speak with one of our product specialists or visit www.amayauk.com

Understanding Co2 Laser Engraving Machines

WHAT IS A CO2 LASER ENGRAVING MACHINE?

Laser cutting works by directing the output power from a metal Co2 Laser or glass C02 lasertube. A beam is deflected via a series of mirrors and focused through a lens on to the material to be cut or engraved. Tweaking the laser driver by decreasing the power of the C02 laser beam and speeding up the carrage the machine will engrave the most complex of designs on to many surfaces eg. Marble (High power, slow carriage speed) or something as delicate as rose petal. (Low power, high carriage speed)

HOW SAFE IS IT TO USE A LASER ENGRAVER?

LaserPro Laser Engravers are certificated and tested by CE and FCC for laser and electronic operation safety. In addition, the GCC LaserPro Engraving system achieves CDRH (Center for Devices and Radiological Health) IIIA safety criteria.

WHAT KIND OF MATERIALS CAN A GCC LASERPRO LASER ENGRAVING MACHINE CUT OR ENGRAVE?

Acrylic, Anodized Aluminum / Meta, Bamboo, Carbide, Cardboard, Ceramics, Composites, Cork, Crystal, Coated Metal, Textile, Fiberglass, Foam, Glass, Kevlar, Laminate, Plastic, Leather, Marble, Board, Melamine, Nylon, Paper, Plastic, Polyester, Card, Pressboard, Rubber, Silicon, Stone, Veneer, Wood & lots more.

WHAT IS THE LIFE CYCLE OF THE LASERPRO C02 METAL TUBE?

Average life is 20,000 - 35,000 hours of use. That amounts to 8 hours a day at 100% power, 7 days a week, for 7 years if the tube only lasts for 20,000 hours. GCC uses laser tubes manufactured by both Coherent/Deos of Santa Clara, CA and Synrad of Mukilteo, WA. In addition to Grafityp’s trust and faith in the reliability of the tubes they utilise in their LaserPro line of laser engravers/cutters they also offer the industry’s longest warranty: A full 18 months on the laser tube.

CAN THE LASER TUBE BE REFILLED/ RECHARGED?

YES. Once the laser tube has reached the end of its useful life, a gas recharge and system overall by the manufacturer will restore the laser to full power. Once serviced the tube should be good for years more service.

GCC Laser machines offer a range of CO2, Fiber, and Galvo laser machines with various power options to suit your budget and manufacturing requirements. Whether you’re in the education sector or an industry professional, Grafityp’s lasers cater to your needs.

KREATIVE IDEAS –TROPHIES, MEDALS AND ECOLOGICAL AWARDS

Creating eco-friendly trophies, medals, and awards is the business of Kreative Ideas, led by Carlos Freitas. Learn more about Kreative Ideas in the following interview with Carlos.

What does Kreative Ideas do and how did the idea come about?

Kreative Ideas creates trophies, medals, and awards tailored to each event through a 100% ecological and sustainable approach.

The idea emerged with the purpose of combining the art of personalisation with the act of honouring, using a process based on the use of sustainable and eco-friendly materials, all sourced from Portugal.

What are the preferred materials you use?

The materials we preferentially use are cork and wood and their derivatives.

In customising trophies and medals, we prioritise ecological finishes, employing laser engraving and UV digital printing. We primarily choose materials and finishes that are the most sustainable and environmentally friendly.

Which type of product is in higher demand?

Trophies and medals produced in wood or cork are the most sought-after products because they meet the needs of discerning customers who value attention to detail, conscious purchasing, and seek more ecological and sustainable alternatives.

Companies, event organisers, and consumers are more attentive and sensitive, and when it comes to rewarding or honouring, they increasingly seek products manufactured with more ecological and sustainable materials and finishes.

Who is your typical customer, and what do they value most in what you offer?

Our typical customers are mainly sports event organisers and companies. They seek to make a positive impact, honour and reward the best athletes, employees, clients, and partners.

What our customers value most in the product we offer is the opportunity to create a distinct identity, a unique,

personalised piece for each trophy, medal, or award through an ecological and sustainable approach.

You are a 100% Portuguese brand. How do you identify ideal partners?

We primarily seek partners who align with the same value proposition, sharing our values of transparency, commitment, and sustainability. We prioritise certified suppliers with the necessary guarantees of the sustainability of their raw materials. Competitions have been impacted by the pandemic. How did you manage during this phase, and what are the prospects for the future?

The Covid-19 pandemic led to the cancellation of most sports and business events. As these channels were responsible for the majority of our sales, we were significantly affected.

We managed this phase with positive expectations, believing that once most events took place again, everything would start returning to normal.

During this period, we took the opportunity to enhance our business model, improve our communication strategy, work on a new image, and enhance our website. We are establishing new national and international partnerships.

The prospects for the future are excellent. The changes we have implemented have been well-received in the market.

BOXFORD LASER CUTTING AND ENGRAVING MACHINES

– the quick, high precision alternative to traditional engraving techniques

Boxford have a wealth of experience supplying affordable laser cutting and engraving machines for over twenty years. During this time, we have seen laser become an invaluable addition to traditional engraving capabilities and in some cases a quicker alternative.

Substrates our machines can engrave

Glass – CO2 laser (see Boxford’s BGL range of CO2 laser cutting and engraving machines)

Traditionally, sandblasting would be the go-to technique to apply intricate designs to glassware and glass trophy products. The quality of the end result when sand blasting, can’t be argued with. However, it can be time consuming and in a competitive world, this service can also come at a price.

Laser engraving directly onto glass can produce a very similar end result, at a fraction of the time taken, allowing our customers to charge a lot less for this

service. There are other key differences too: When laser engraving on glass, your artwork can be directly replicated onto the substrate, without the need for templates, or time consuming weeding.

Laser engraving laminate

CO2 laser (see Boxford’s BGL range of CO2 laser cutting and engraving machines)

A Boxford CO2 laser can not only engrave materials but also cut! For many years Traffolyte has been a go-to material for engraving data plates, trophy plaques and control panels. An alternative to traffolyte is laser engraving laminate, which can be both cut and engraved using a CO2 laser.

What other materials can a CO2 laser cut or engrave?

CO2 lasers can process slate, leather, perspex, plywood, MDF, paper, card, foam, corrugated card and much more!

Metals – Fibre laser (see Boxford’s BFM range of Fibre laser engraving and marking machines)

Boxford BFM110 Fibre lasers can engrave on any metals, including steel, brass, copper, aluminium and even precious metals such as gold and silver. Some of the key advantages of fibre laser engraving over traditional engraving techniques are speed, the level of high definition, photographic detail which can be achieved, and the fact that material does not need to be clamped down to the machine bed.

What other materials can a fibre laser engrave?

A Fibre laser can engrave lot of other materials and objects such as, anodised aluminium, painted steel, lighters, hip flasks, medals, rings, pendants and more!

Visit Boxford.co.uk for more information on the entire Boxford range. The Boxford team will be only too happy to help and can provide machine demonstrations, free of charge samples and finance options if required.

DINNER’S UP FOR BUTTERNUT BOX BARK AWARDS

Think of your favourite fresh food delivery box but this time it’s for your beloved dog! Butternut Box delivers delicious, humanquality meals for dogs, full of freshly prepared ingredients, straight to customers’ doors. All meals are made with humanquality meat and vegetables, gently cooked to create simple, tasty and complete meals, and created with the right balance of vitamins and minerals for dogs of every age. Butternut was founded by two friends, Kev & Dave, after seeing the benefits that home-cooked food had on Dave’s poorly rescue dog, Rudie. Butternut’s mission is to deliver health and happiness to dogs and their humans all over the world.

Alongside creating delicious food for our furry friends, they work with a number of charities, build new shelters for rescue dogs and also donate meals to those less fortunate each time a new dog signs up. Their BARK (Butternut Annual Recognition and Kudos) awards are held internally every Christmas, but were newly launched last year to their external suppliers on their Supplier Day. A testament to how fresh and delicious their product is, attendees of the awards even got to taste the product…which is dog food!

With the focus of the ‘Grow With Us and Make a Difference’ Supplier Day being sustainability, they launched a series of webinars that will continue to take place every quarter for their Raw Materials,

Packaging and Logistics Partners so that they can continue to grow and learn along with their suppliers on the sustainability journey, sharing knowledge and insight as they go. Therefore the awards had to match this ethos!

We pride ourselves at EFX on our sustainable awards and the wide variety we offer.

Sustainable Awards

The initial four paw print award designs focussed on their four core values, ‘Dedicated and Determined, Open and Honest, Genuine Care, Strive for Better.’ The 5th award was the sustainability award, aptly named the Green Bone award. The five awards were created out of solid oak with digitally printed detailing.

A spokesperson for the event said – ‘The feedback was really positive, everyone loved that the shapes were a bit different and dog themed – a paw print and a bone and the fact that they

were wooden, so sustainable was really important considering it was one of our focuses for the day.’

They also had this to say about working with EFX and their sustainable awards –“Sharron was so helpful and a pleasure to work with, the whole process was seamless and the final awards exceeded my expectations.”

We at EFX believe anything is paw-sible with our awards!
