OUR FANS ASKED, AND WE ANSWERED

Epilog Laser Fans – ELFs for short – are some of the most creative engravers around. The ELF group on Facebook has so many engraving projects and examples of the versatility of Epilog machines. In addition, most ELFs are happy to offer expertise and advice to newcomers.

Here’s a look at 10 of the most frequently asked questions our fans ask, along with answers from our experts!

1. What are some recommendations for hardwood engraving?

Mask the wood. Masking helps reduce residue from seeping into engraved areas and makes for easy clean up.

Use “bottom up” engraving. This is a feature in Epilog’s print driver that allows users to engrave from the bottom of the design up, instead of engraving from the top down. It also helps reduce smoke and debris being pulled into the engraving area as the laser head moves.

Clean with Pledge, Simple Green or any citrus-cleaner.

2. I’m a little nervous about etching glass! Any suggestions?

First, remember that not all glass is created equal. While you may think you need more expensive glass to get a great engraving, that’s not always the case. Many of our customers use glassware from restaurant suppliers or dollar-discount stores, both of which engrave beautifully.

We’ve also developed the following tips that help ensure a nice, frosty engraved finish:

Using a lower resolution, around 300 DPI, produces a better result on glass as you separate the dots you are engraving.

Change the black in your graphic to 80% black to improve the engraving quality.

Running with a Jarvis dithering pattern in the driver (you’ll find this under the raster speed and power settings) will also help provide a smoother finish.

Some people find that applying a thin, wet sheet of newspaper or paper towel a

little larger than the engraving area also helps with heat dissipation and improves the engraving. Just be sure that there are no wrinkles in the paper after it is applied.

Using your finger or a paper towel, apply a thin coat of liquid dish soap—any kind will do—over the area to be engraved. That will dissipate the heat when engraving.

Polish the area with a ScotchBrite pad or something similar to eliminate shards of glass.

3. What are some tips for engraving on plywood or balsa?

Generally speaking, this material is cut with a laser more than it’s engraved. For engraving, we’d suggest starting with the recommended wood engraving settings in our manual. Plywood can be tricky and inconsistent in terms of cutting, due to the various layers of glue found within it. Balsa seems to cut very nicely and many of our customers use this medium to build various types of models.

4. I’m thinking of expanding my business to engrave leather. Will that be difficult?

Not at all—leather engraves and cuts beautifully with a laser! Some of our users custom etch leather journals, coasters and much more.

5. What are the best settings for engraving on leatherette?

This is going to depend on your machine and wattage, but we’d start with the recommended settings for “leather” in Epilog’s user manual. When in doubt, start with a relatively high speed and low power. If you don’t move the item being engraved, it is easy to add a little more power or reduce the speed and run the job again until you get the look you want.

6. I hate to waste materials. What cool projects can you create with scrap pieces from other projects?

Scrap materials are great not only for creating new projects, but also for use as practice pieces for more challenging engravings, such as photographs. We’ve seen customers make all kinds of things from scrap, such as small acrylic edge-lit signage, ornaments, name tags, and lots more!

7. I have a Mac. Can I use it with my Epilog Laser?

Yes! Epilog’s current product lineup can be used with Mac Operating Systems. Our Pulse app lets you connect the laser to your device in one of three ways: Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or USB. Once you connect your device you can open a web browser window, type in the IP address of the laser, and hit enter. The app loads automatically, and you can then import various files and send them to the laser for processing. If you have a legacy system, we recommend using Parallels or Bootcamp to power the lasers from their systems, or simply purchase an adequate PC and dedicate that machine only to the laser.

8. Any tips for proper maintenance? How and when should I clean my machine?

The biggest piece of maintenance advice is to keep your system clean, especially the optics. Clean optics help ensure that your laser produces the most precise engraving and cutting results. Other maintenance activities will depend on the model of your machine and are included in your owner’s manual. You can also find maintenance videos in our online training site and knowledge base.

9. Can I maximize my laser investment with apparel applications?

Absolutely. Epilog systems can both cut and directly etch all kinds of fabrics. We’ve seen users engraving fleece pullovers, leather jackets, aprons, napkins, and more.

10. Can you recommend inexpensive substrates I can play around with?

This is where scrap materials come in very handy for testing speed and power settings, experimenting with different resolutions, etc. Many of our users go to the big home improvement stores for inexpensive wood and tile (ceramic, marble, etc.) to test and play around with. Thrift stores are also great places to find lots of different low-cost substrates to experiment with. Additionally, “dollar store” retailers often have glassware (pint glasses, wine glasses, beer mugs, etc.) that engrave beautifully.

GEKA - THE LATEST EXHIBITOR TO JOIN EURO TROPHEX 2025

History of GEKA

It all began in 1993, when Gūrij Bulle, now Chairman of the Board at GEKA, was tasked with organising another round of the European Autocross Championship at the "Mūsa" sports complex. Each year, the challenge of sourcing appropriate awards arose—at the time, only wooden cups were made in Latvia, and such a national style was unsuitable for an event of European importance. On a drive to Germany, where a friend had spotted a sports trophy shop, Bulle had an idea: why not venture into the trophy business himself? The need for better award options at sporting events was clear.

In 1996, borrowing 200 LVL from his mother and adding 100 LVL of his own savings, Gūrij set off in his silver Opel Omega toward Finland. Negotiating in broken English, he managed to secure a small shipment of trophies. His car, packed to the brim, he returned home, and within two weeks, the entire stock was sold. The first trophies were stored in his house’s garage, which was kept warm with electric heaters during the winter to prevent the metal from rusting. The garage doubled as both a storage space and a showroom for customers, which worked fine in the early days.

As the business grew and more customers came on board, the family home transformed into a workspace. His son had to give up his room to make space for a larger inventory, while the home’s library became the office. Realising the business had potential, Gūrij then began expanding the house to accommodate both office and storage needs. Today, GEKA operates a branch in Riga and has a shop and workshop in Bauska.

GEKA offer a vast portfolio of products which include: tableware, awards, trophies, medals, centers, ribbons, rosettes, figures, decorative plates, plaques, presentation boxes, pins, coins, and diplomas.

GEKA also offers laser engraving, mechanical engraving, sandblasting engraving, milling, and etching services.

Their modern equipment allows engraving on virtually any shape and material: metal, plastic, glass, crystal, leather, rubber, wood, ceramics, stone, paper, cardboard, as well as natural and other materials. All engraving equipment and specialists are on-site. GEKA serve government and municipal institutions, private businesses, individual clients, and manufacturing companies. In one day, operating all engraving machines, they can engrave approximately 10,000 units.

GEKA are committed to delivering exceptional quality and innovative solutions for all your engraving, awards, and personalisation needs. With a strong focus on customer satisfaction and a dedication to excellence, they continue to lead the industry by combining modern technology with a deep understanding of tradition. Trust GEKA to provide you with products that stand out and a service that exceeds expectations.

KREATIVE IDEAS

TALK TO TEN MAGAZINE

Kreative Ideas is focused on creating eco-friendly trophies, medals, and awards, led by Carlos Freitas.

TEN magazine learns more about Kreative Ideas in the following interview with Carlos.

What does Kreative Ideas do and how did the idea come about?

Kreative Ideas creates trophies, medals, and awards tailored to each event through a 100% ecological and sustainable approach.

The idea emerged with the purpose of combining the art of personalisation with the act of honouring, using a process based on the use of sustainable and eco-friendly materials, all sourced from Portugal.

What are the preferred materials you use?

The materials we preferentially use are cork and wood and their derivatives.

In customising trophies and medals, we prioritise ecological finishes, employing laser engraving and UV digital printing. We primarily choose materials and finishes that are the most sustainable and environmentally friendly.

Which type of product is in higher demand?

Trophies and medals produced in wood or cork are the most sought-after products because they meet the needs of discerning customers who value attention to detail, conscious purchasing, and seek more ecological and sustainable alternatives.

Companies, event organisers, and consumers are more attentive and sensitive, and when it comes to rewarding or honouring, they increasingly seek products manufactured with more ecological and sustainable materials and finishes.

Who is your typical customer, and what do they value most in what you offer?

Our typical customers are mainly sports event organisers and companies. They seek to make a positive impact, honour and reward the best athletes, employees,

clients, and partners.

What our customers value most in the product we offer is the opportunity to create a distinct identity, a unique, personalised piece for each trophy, medal, or award through an ecological and sustainable approach.

You are a 100% Portuguese brand. How do you identify ideal partners?

We primarily seek partners who align with the same value proposition, sharing our values of transparency, commitment, and sustainability. We prioritise certified suppliers with the necessary guarantees of the sustainability of their raw materials.

Kreative Ideas: Where Artistry Meets Eco-Friendly Craftsmanship

TEN Magazine can see that Kreative Ideas stands at the forefront of combining artistry with sustainability, offering customised trophies, medals, and awards that not only honour achievements but also reflect a commitment to the environment. By using eco-friendly materials like cork and wood, and employing sustainable techniques such as laser engraving and UV printing, they provide discerning customers with products that embody conscious craftsmanship. As a 100% Portuguese brand, Kreative Ideas is dedicated to partnering with like-minded businesses that share their values of transparency, commitment, and sustainability, ensuring that every creation leaves a positive impact on both people and the planet.

WINNING LASTS A MOMENT, AND THE AWARD REMAINS FOREVER!

The team at Taurės UAB believes that recognising and appreciating achievements is a key factor in motivating individuals to move forward, overcome challenges, improve, and strive for even greater results.

At Taurės UAB, our core mission is to contribute to the joy and recognition that come with victory. Since 2011, we have been deeply committed to developing, producing, and trading high-quality awards that celebrate achievement. Our daily efforts are driven by a passion for craftsmanship and a desire to honor those who overcome challenges and reach new heights. We take pride in creating awards that are not just symbols of success but also lasting reminders of hard work and excellence.

Awards are becoming increasingly popular, and it's rare for an event to take place without some form of recognition. Awards hold significance not only in sports but also in fields like science, business, and even personal celebrations. Sometimes a diploma or a simple token of gratitude may be enough, while at other times, hundreds of medals or trophies might be required. Every event—whether it's a friendly neighbourhood competition, a professional sports event, or an international contest—matters to us. Our goal is to ensure that each award ceremony is of the highest standard and that the prize serves as a lasting reminder

of the recipient's achievements, whether in sports, hobbies, or professional endeavors.

RELIABILITY

Loyalty, quality, and accessibility are core values in our work. Over the past ten years, Taurės UAB has earned a reputation as a reliable production partner and supplier of sports and other awards, backed by customer recommendations.

ACCESSIBILITY

We likely have the largest inventory of awards in Lithuania, ensuring we can meet the demands of even the biggest projects. Our wide selection includes cups, medals, statues, and diplomas, as well as elegant, premium-designed souvenirs made from glass, wood, or plastic.

UNIQUENESS

What sets us apart from others in the market is the ability for customers to create their own custom-designed awards.

At Taurės UAB, our professional designers continuously bring new ideas to life in our production unit. Each design is refined to meet even the most discerning customer's expectations, and our advanced equipment allows us to complete even the most complex orders quickly and with top quality. We also offer additional services such as UV printing, laser cutting, and engraving.

Taurės UAB is a place where every team member can grow, enhance their professional skills, and take pride in their work. It’s fulfilling to know that we play a part in something meaningful.

Photos from events remind us that we’ve contributed to the success stories of our friends, customers, and partners.

We strive to preserve the joy of achievements and the thrill of victory for as long as possible. That’s why we say, that a victory lasts for a second and an award remains forever!

Professional & a ordable laser cutting, marking and engraving solutions

WHAT IS LASER MARKING?

Laser marking is a process that uses a focused laser beam to create permanent marks on the surface of a material without removing any of it. Unlike laser engraving, which cuts into the material, laser marking only alters the surface, changing its appearance or colour. This method is widely used for marking serial numbers, logos, and barcodes on materials such as metals, plastics, and glass.

Types of Laser Marking

There are four primary methods of laser marking, each suited to different materials:

1. Annealing: This process heats the surface of carboncontaining metals, like titanium, enough to cause fine oxidation, which leaves a dark mark.

2. Carbon Migration: This technique brings carbon molecules to the surface, creating dark marks on carbon-containing metals.

3. Foaming: Mostly used on dark plastics, this process melts the material slightly, creating a foamy, lighter-coloured mark.

4. Coloration/Discoloration: This method oxidizes the material’s surface, changing its colour, and is suitable for a variety of materials.

ENGRAVE WITH EXCELLENCE:

CO2 and Fibre Laser Engravers

HPC Laser’s range of CO2 and fibre laser engravers can be used for many purposes, from personalising gifts to enhancing industrial production processes. Machines are available with either a CO2 or Fibre laser source and a galvo head, allowing you to choose the machine most suited to your requirements.

Benefits of Laser Engraving Machines:

Speed and Efficiency

Precision and Accuracy

Versatility

CO2 engravers can be up to 10x faster than a conventional laser cutter, enhancing productivity.

Laser engravers provide extremely precise and detailed engravings, with consistency and repeatability.

Laser engravers can process a wide range of materials, depending on the laser source. These can be metals, fabrics, wood, ceramics, and more!

Low maintenance

Galvo laser engraving machines have fewer moving parts and need less maintenance than traditional engraving tools or CO2 laser cutters, reducing downtime and maintenance costs.

Materials That Can Be Laser Marked

Laser marking works on a wide range of materials, including:

Coated and uncoated metals (with a marking compound for CO2 lasers)

Leather

Glass

Silicone

Ceramics

Cardboard

Fabrics

For metals, CO2 lasers need a marking compound, such as MarkSolid spray, to reveal the underlying metal for a clear, bright finish.

Types of Laser Marking Machines offered by HPC

The two most common types of laser marking machines are CO2 lasers and fibre lasers, each suited for specific materials.

CO2 Laser Markers are effective on non-metal surfaces, particularly for organic materials like paper, wood, and leather. Outside of trophy engraving are often used for product recognition and marking barcodes and serial numbers. While they work on coated metals, they are less effective for uncoated metals without using a marking compound.

Fibre Laser Markers are ideal for metals and offer high precision and speed. These machines are excellent for engraving and marking harder metals and perfect for trophy engraving and other small-component markings due to their small spot sizes and high resolution.

Applications of Laser Marking

Laser marking is widely used for marking text, serial numbers, and barcodes on various products. It is valued for its precision, allowing the creation of marks that are easily readable to the human eye or only detectable with magnifying technology.

Benefits of Laser Marking

High production speed

No removal of material, ensuring structural integrity

Minimal waste

Permanent markings that resist fading Excellent for traceability through codes

Why Choose HPC Laser?

HPC Laser provides a range of laser engraving and marking machines, bundled with user-friendly software like EZCAD or Lightburn. The company also offers lifetime technical support, competitive prices, and nationwide installation and training.

In conclusion, laser marking offers a high-speed, durable, and efficient solution for various industries, particularly for applications requiring permanent and precise marks on a wide range of materials- which is why it holds an invaluable position in trophy engraving.
