Narayan Shrestha
People/ Narayan Shrestha
“Felt like I was let out of a small room to an open ground....” His mother’s yearning to make him a teacher; just so that he wouldn’t have to endure physical hardship like she did landed him at a government school in the village. He was a bright student who passed the SLC examination with 74%, an astounding score in those days.
8:30 Leaving the office for the shoot of Sajha Sawal.
Coming to Kathmandu after finishing his SLC examinations in the year 2052 BS was a turning point in his life. Till then, for him media was limited to radio and stale issues of Gorkhapatra. So Kathmandu’s newly opened FM stations and a variety of newspapers and magazines left him pleasantly dazed in the beginning. In his own words he felt like he was
O
ur personality this month is the winner of Today’s Youth Asia Young Achievers’ Award. He is a household name in Nepal. And for the past four years, he has been producing and hosting Nepal’s popular TV and radio debate show called Sajha Sawal. Through this program he has been bringing real people’s real issues to the foreground through the television screen and the good old radio. Developed in cooperation with BBC Nepali, “Sajha Sawal” (or, “Common Questions”) seeks to spark dialogue between those in power and members of populations that have traditionally been excluded, including women and those living in rural communities. The show has become a run away success and a mustwatch/hear program for all Nepalis. Surprisingly when we met Narayan Shrestha, it was not his accomplishments that hit us. Rather it was his lovely hazel brown eyes. I asked myself if those were real. However, as the interview progressed I realized there was no pretence and he has got a pair of hazel brown eyes as real as anybody can get.
12:30 Back in the office, editing the program let out of a small room to an open ground that seemed endless. Private FM stations had just begun broadcasting and its charm was spreading like wildfire in the valley. Narayan was one among them who was enamoured by the radio’s charm. “There were songs, people talking on the phone, discussion
shows and so much to listen to on the radio”, he recollects. Besides listening to various shows on the radio, Kathmandu opened up the world of books for him. It wasn’t just literature that got him glued to books. Now it was politics, philosophy, history and plethora of other fields that books introduced to him. Books opened up a whole new world for him and broadened his perspective on many facets of life. Having secured good marks in the SLC examinations in 2052 BS, he got enrolled at ASCOL in the Science faculty which was the first priority for students securing high percentage. But by the end of the second year at ASCOL, he realized that he wasn’t cut out for Science. He then joined Ratna Rajya Campus to pursue his Bachelor’s level. Fuelled by his passion for media, he began reading as much as he could lay his hands on. So, it didn’t come as surprise when he topped his faculty. Radio still enamoured him and as a result he bagged an opportunity at Radio Sagarmatha.
“I always managed to rise above such criticism thankfully”, His foray into radio was through the program Jiwan Yatra on Radio Sagarmatha. The seven years that he spent there built his confidence in program design and development
His is a rag to riches sort of story. But instead of pool of money, pool of education brought the transformation. Narayan Shrestha’s humble beginnings can be traced back to 1979 in Ghyalchowk , Gorkha where he was born to a simple family of farmers.

“The challenge always remains”, he says. “Earlier, the challenge was to get a platform and attract listeners. Now the challenge is to constantly live up to people’s expectations and retain the program’s standard.” The last four years has taken him to almost 65 districts across Nepal. When asked about the most memorable incident of the last four years while working for Sajha Sawal, he says he has many. But one particular incident in Mugu district affected him a lot. The district has the lowest life expectancy rate- around 36 years- in the whole country. “There is just one hospital in the entire district”, he informs. “And once I came across a woman giving birth in an
5:30 Heading home after a hectic day at work for radio. Furthermore, the opportunity to go Holland for training on radio production not only sharpened his skills but also reassured him about his radio program formats that happened to meet globally accepted standard. Along with his work at Radio Sagramatha, he also completed his Masters in Journalism and earned a degree in law. The popularity of his program on Radio Sagarmatha brought plenty of opportunities for him, one of which was joining BBC world service. This opportunity knocked on his door at a time when he had begun feeling his involvement in programs had reached a level of saturation at Radio Sagarmatha. The opportunity to be working for BBC Nepal gave him the chance to reach to a wider audience but at the same time also posed a challenge of meeting the expectations of the listeners of his previous programs. “There was always a question lingering in my mind about whether or not I’d be able to live up to the listeners’ expectations”, he remembers. So after plenty of research, he along with his team came up with the concept of Sajha Sawal. The program that now draws thousands of listeners on radio and thousands of viewers on television. “The response to the program has been overwhelming since its inception”, he informs. Now it is in its fourth year, constantly creating a platform for citizens to interact directly with the concerned authorities. And recognition that has come from television has made it more challenging for him as most people who meet him share their problems and expects him to bring it forward though the program. 14 N Av yaata • m ag h 2 0 6 7
“The people there were feeding her instant noodles, saying chow chow was the most nutritious food for her” open ground and this wasn’t as shocking as what I heard next”, he says. “The people there were feeding her instant noodles, saying chow chow was the most nutritious food for her”, he laments at their such sorry state. His program Sajha Sawal has been a
landmark in mainstream Nepali media. And he plans to take the program to all the remaining districts of Nepal to reach out to more people across Nepal. However, in the years to come he also wants to do programs related to successful young people’s stories to inspire other youths too. “Youths are the agents of change and pillars of power in a country, that’s why I want to do something related to them in the future”, he says. But as for now, he is very happy doing Sajha Sawal and reaching out to more people across Nepal. His career graph is impeccable from the word go, but he too had his own share of struggle before his career took off. “There were limited media outlets compared to today, so getting a launch pad wasn’t as easy as today”, he says. Some people simply brushed off his ideas saying they were impossible to materialize. “It was tough to revive the enthusiasm and positive attitude after such discouraging remarks, however I always managed to rise above such criticism thankfully”, he adds with a smile. A young lad from a remote village in Gorkha has come a long way indeed. But even as his recognition has surpassed his expectation, he continues to remain the humble person that he is and is ever ready to lend ear to the woes of every Tom, Dick and Harry be it a government official or taxi driver or a farmer.

Their Story Call it destiny or co-incidence but Shakti and Kirti it seems were meant to be. As a novice entrepreneur Shakti had gone to attend a carpets’ expo that was going on in Germany having just ventured into the business. Kirti’s father who was already in the business happened to be there too. A meeting between the two took place and Kirti’s father was left impressed by the young man’s wit and determination. Seeing all the qualities that he wanted in a son-in-law, he invited him over to his hometown, Benaras. Both the families met and a marriage was arranged. Your marriage was arranged by your family. Didn’t you wish you had first fallen in love? Kirti- Arranged marriage doesn’t mean you are forced to
accept your partner. Our parents seeked our approval before we were married. We saw each other and we liked each other. That is why we got married. Shakti- The first time I saw her I liked her. From the way she
spoke I knew she was very cultured. She believed in the joint family system which is rare to find these days. We both shared similar thoughts. Also, her family was very warm. They were all very attached to each other and cared deeply about each other. I found her simply perfect.
Whenever I go abroad for business trips, I want her to come pick me up at the airport. Although she does it at times, I wish she’d do it every time.

Shakti- I get angry easily so we end up fighting with each
other. After a time, I realize my mistake and I apologize to her.
What do you call each other?
How has life changed after marriage?
Kirti- That’s very personal (winks). I can’t share it with the world.
Kirti- Life has definitely become better. I feel blessed to have a husband like Shakti.

Is there anything that you dislike about each other?
What do you think holds your relationship together?
Kirti- I think I know what he doesn’t like about me. He is a perfectionist; a true Virgo. He is very particular about what he wants and I am not.
Kirti- We share everything with each other. There are no secrets in our relationship. So, we don’t have to worry about anything. When you are in a healthy relationship, you are able to tell your partner everything.
like something, she’ll just say it. She’s not pretentious. That is something that I really admire about her.

Kirti- The wedding ring that he gave me is my favourite. As a couple, what do you enjoy doing? Kirti- We like to just sit and talk. When time permits we like to go for vacations. How often do you fight? Kirti- We fight sometimes. I think fights are a part of every relationship whether it is between a son and a mother or between husband and wife. Banu Sharma and Neil Pande Tied the knot on: December 8, 1997 Number of kid: 1 Son Binayak (11)

Neil Pande
They don’t need words to communicate. Although they disagree on a lot of things they are in a true sense each other’s better half. Owners of Healthy Smiles, the Dental clinic and dental practioners, Banu Sharma and Neil Pande have been married for the past thirteen years. Their story Banu’s and Neil’s isn’t a typical boy meets girl, they fall in love and get married kind of story. It took the couple four years to realize that theirs was a relationship meant to be more than that of just friends. After being friends throughout college, it was when Banu was in final year and Neil was interning that they started dating. When asked why it took so long the couple say, “Perhaps we were just not available for each other.” Even though it took a long time for them to start dating, they hit it off as friends instantly. Neil was the person Banu would go to every time she needed any kind of help or support and Neil in Banu’s words “would bend over backwards to help her.”

What do you like the most about each other?
B- I wish he’d be more punctual. Its so ironic he is the one who gets up early in the morning but then he is the one who’s always late.
Neil: Well, she is good at heart. She may come across as being too loud, she likes to blurt everything out on your face but deep down she is very soft and kind hearted. She has got very strong likes and dislikes and if somebody doesn’t stand up to it she gets mad.
Do you have any song that reminds you of each other?
Banu: He is just the opposite of me. He is my other half, literally. I am outgoing and he likes to relax. He will be the one to pull me back when I go hurling into the fire. He is diplomatic which I am not. We are two sides of the same coin.
Banu: Since we have a child I think it’s just going out for a holiday with our child.
Banu: He has this habit of shaking his leg when he sits. Even when we are watching TV he does that and it annoys me a lot. Neil: Many! (laughs)Her temper. She is very temperamental. She doesn’t know what she is doing at times. Sometimes I get scared not for myself but for her own sake. Also, her eating habits are irregular. She got into yoga a couple of months ago and then she stopped doing that. She thinks she knows everything. Banu: No, I don’t. It’s just too cold to wake up in the morning.
Neil: Very often Banu: Not fight. We argue because whatever I say Neil says the exact opposite. Like for example I am watching a football match which is like a religion to me, and then he will come and say this side will win and so on which annoys me a lot.
Banu: No, I say sorry too. Neil: I think throughout our relationship she has said sorry only once. She believes she is always right.
Neil: We have this group hug time where all three of us hug each other. That’s a lot of fun. Has there been any movie that defines your relationship? Neil: Yes, there is. There is this Hindi movie which is about college and it reminded us of our college life. I fail to remember the name though. Do you have nicknames for each other?
How often do you fight?
Neil: It’s always me.
Banu: I disagree; I think it’s U2’s “With or without you” and “One.”. As a couple, what do you enjoy doing together?
Any habit of his/her that annoys you the most?
Who makes up first?
Neil: I think most of Bryan Adams’ songs remind us of each other because during our college years we used to listen to his songs a lot.
We don’t call each other mutu, raja and all. We are not one of those corny couples. Neil: I think trust. Banu: It is cliché answer but trust and understanding are what binds us together. Although we are always arguing at the end of the day we understand each other and that is what makes our relationship work. What message would you like to convey to our readers? Neil: Marriage is a huge commitment so you have to be really careful while choosing a partner. Once you have found someone, try to synergize your energies to make your relationship work. Banu: I want to tell the female readers one should always be independent. Just because you are woman doesn’t mean you are weak. You are an individual first and then your gender comes. You got to do what you want to not what others expect of you. If you are not in a healthy marriage, it is wise to get out of it and you shouldn’t worry what others will think of you.
Neil: Sometimes she calls me… mmmmmmmm that’s too personal to put in print though. We don’t call each other mutu, raja and all. We are not one of those corny couples. Banu: I don’t think you need nicknames to define your relationship. You are what you are. We call each other by our names. How has life changed after marriage? Banu: Not after marriage but life definitely changed after our son was born. Neil: We didn’t have any drastic change after marriage as we had been dating for three years before marriage.
Would you like to change anything about each other?
Banu: For me there was not much of a change when I moved to his home from my home.
Neil: I think she should learn to control her temper.

Dj Raju: Being able to understand each other is the most important virtue. Areena: Love, trust and compromise. Any message you want to convey through Navyaata? Dj Raju: ‘Live healthy and kill piracy!’ Areena: Enjoy your life to the fullest because time that has passed will never come back.

There is a saying that opposites attract and I guess this law holds true in our case. One thing you wish to do for one another? Dj Raju: I want to take her to Europe for our second honeymoon. Valentine’s Day
in Nepal
and around the world
Text by- Bhrikuti Rai and Tsering Dolker Gurung
What greater thing is there for two human souls that to feel that they are joined... to strengthen each other... to be at one with each other in unspeakable
silent Valentine’s Day marks the celebration of love all around the world. While gifting flowers and chocolates to your special someone is the most common ritual, there are some other ways of celebration that are unique to the different cities of the world. So, we asked some of our friends to share how Valentine’s Day is celebrated in their part of the globe.
Kathmandu Unlike some cities that boast of unique Valentine’s Day ritual, Kathmandu is still waiting to get one of its own. The celebrations here are mostly influenced by the West as gifting roses and cards are widely practised. Couples in Kathmandu generally prefer to go to romantic spots in and around the valley; Nagarkot, Dhulikhel, Godavari being some of the favourites. Those who prefer someplace nearby take their date to the movies, stroll around Basantapur and Patan Durbar Square. Many malls and restaurants are especially decorated for the day with special attractions for couples and singles alike. Dance parties are also organized to mark this day which are largely attended by people who are yet to find their special someone.
Pokhara Lovers in Pokhara are spoilt by choices that Pokhara offers. Being one of the most sought after places for newly weds; this city has romantic spots in abundance. Right from the scenic boat rides in Fewa taal and Begnas taal to the awe inspiring paragliding, Pokhara has it all. And as it is with most of the places in Nepal and the world, the practice of exchanging cards, flowers and chocolates are widely prevalent. Besides, couples also opt to go different caves and the popular Devi’s fall around the city that attracts plenty of tourists. For those who want a time way from the maddening crowd of the city can go to the Shanti Stupa, Sarangkot and bicycle to a nearby village Pame that offers the most delicious fresh fishes. -Priyanka Tamila
Dang, Tulsipur Although the older people here haven’t accepted the culture of celebrating Valentine’s Day, the younger generation enjoy this celebration. The wave of arrival of Valentine’s Day can be sensed weeks before the actual day. A visit to the gifts and music stores will give you a wisp of love. Love songs by Nepali pop singers like Nabin K. Bhattarai, Nima Rumba and Sugam Pokhrel can be heard from every store in the town. The tradition of giving a loved one a card is extremely popular in Dang. Gift shops therefore stock up on Valentine’s Day cards. Cards are found in every shape and sizes with prices ranging from a low Rs.5 to Rs.500. Usually young couples, who are too scared to openly proclaim their love get their gifts and greetings exchanged. Young couples visiting cinema halls are a common sight (but couples are generally not alone. They bring along their friends to avoid any kind of suspicion). So, although it’s a much celebrated affair, the young love birds of Tulsipur are compelled to keep everything hush- hush.

Biratnagar
Sydney, Australia
Like other urban centres in Nepal, Biratnagar is also fast catching up with the trend of celebrating Valentine’s Day. Gift and card shops have plenty to offer. As for the places, well there aren’t many for lovers in Biratnagar to have a nice time together, so it is mostly going to movie theatres or restaurants. Besides this, there is a place called Pokemon Park where young and old alike go to. And people who have enough time and cash to make their Valentine’s Day special opt for Bhedetar that is almost 55 kilometres way from Biratnagar. It is situated at a higher altitude and is surrounded by hills and mountains, which provides a great ambience for lovers to spend quality time.

Seoul, Korea
Korea is perhaps the only nation that celebrates love every month of the year. The traditional gift of candy takes place in Korea on February 14, but only from females to males. There is another special day for males to give gifts to females and this is celebrated on March 14. Very similar to the custom in Japan, March 14 in Korea is known as “White Day.” On “White Day,” many young men confess their love for the first time to their sweethearts. For those young people who have no particular romantic partners, the Koreans have set aside yet another date...April 14, also known as “Black Day.” On that date, single friends get together and visit Chinese restaurants to eat Jajaeng noodles which are black in colour symbolising the day even further.
Valentine’s Day falls in the summer in Sydney. So, beach side restaurants and cruise dinners are very popular for Valentine’s Day celebration here. It is not a public holiday hence people normally meet after work. Celebration is not limited between couples only. Red roses are offered for sale in each corner of the street at very cheap prices. At the end of the night, you will find a red rose in almost every other person’s hand whether they have a Valentine or not.
- Sovita Rana
Yogyakarta, Indonesia Valentine Day in my country is not really special, because many people think it is not part of our culture. But young people celebrate it in the same manner as they do over the rest of the world. Girls give chocolate to their boyfriend. Usually, the people who celebrate Valentine days are Christians, but in our country where Islam is majority, so it’s not very common. We believe we can love everyone, everyday and don’t really need a specific day for celebrating love.
Darmokusumo This Valentine’s Day- Lastin express your love in 7 different languages:
Fargo, North Dakota, USA
Not much happens here in terms of Valentine’s Day celebration. People here usually dine out at a romantic restaurant or visit the local winery where they taste different wines. It’s very cold here so people mostly opt for indoor programmes as it is warm and cosy.
-Sonam Diki
Russia Though Valentine’s Day is not as popular in Russia as it is in the West, the concept of celebrating love is gradually proving popular in the country. Russian couples greet the day with heart shaped balloons, chocolates, candies, cards, teddies, love letters, poems, romantic songs and gift baskets. Flower has become the symbol of this day. The Russian men usually send flowers to their wives and girl friends on this day. Flowers are indeed wonderful Valentine’s Day gifts as flowers are very powerful to express one’s delicate feelings and expressions which words cannot do. The Russian women expect flowers from their beloved on this very day. Even in schools and universities, the day is celebrated in a fun-filled way. Students put anonymous love letters in boxes. The teachers also actively take part in this sweet celebration. Pubs, cafes, clubs and restaurants become overcrowded. A large number of musical concerts and shows are also held in different cities of the country during this festive season.
Spain Valentine’s Day in Spain is much like in many other parts of the world. While flowers like tulips and roses form the common gifts along with perfumes, rings and gift baskets for the girl friends, for the men, the common gifts are photo collages, perfumes, electronic gadgets and more. Gift baskets are an age-old tradition of Valentine’s Day celebration in Spain. The various gift shops in Spain prepare themselves for this lovely celebration. But the Spanish actually have two days when lovers can exchange gifts, at least in Barcelona. Besides February 14, there is one more day for lovers to exchange gifts. La Dia de Sant Jordi (St George’s Day) is Catalonia’s national day celebrated on April 23 each year. Gallant gentlemen in Spain honor St George’s romantic gesture of saving a princess from the clutches of an evil dragon by buying his loved one a book. In Spain only people in love get and give presents. Friends or family don’t exchange notes or presents. send us your feedback at editor@nav yaata.com

Heave them up and hold them there – high waists are so definitely in. The 40’s seen a revival with this vintage chic favorite. The Katharine Hepburn inspired trend brings back accentuated waists and elongated lines. For a lean body, the best way is the classic way: wear with a blousy, detailed top and add a cropped jacket if you’re looking to keep yourself warm. Petite and curvier women can opt for a narrower version of this style.

To make your nose appear smaller, apply light brown eye shadow to the bridge of your nose. One should never run a brush through curled hair. Instead use your fingers to gently run through your hair. Always apply mascara; it makes your eyes look bigger and more attractive instantly.

Shoe Fetish:
Pairs
That Every Woman Should Own By Akash Rajbhandari
The ‘Comfy Elevator’-
A Pair Of Eye-Catching Wedges If you’re looking for some height without having to feel uncomfortable (Yes, we all know of all the aches and ouch’s associated with long heels), then, a pair of fashionable wedges is the one to buy. Many tend to confuse wedges with platforms; however, the fact that differentiates wedges from platforms is that in wedges, the wedge heel runs under the foot, from the back of the shoe to the middle or front. Ranging from casual to elegant, wedges, these days, come in all styles and heights and with the warm weather hitting K Town pretty soon, a pair of wedges is the shoe to buy.
The ‘Must Have’ – Platforms If you want the illusion of long and lean legs without the uneasiness, then platforms are the way to go. Contrary to popular belief, the heel of a shoe has nothing to do with whether or not the shoe is a platform shoe. Rather, it’s the part of the sole sitting under the front of the foot that determines whether or not the shoes are platforms. Most platform shoes have thick soles sitting under the front part of the foot. A footwear trend that started in the 70’s, platforms are this season’s favorites and the best way show them off is pairing them with thighgrazing dresses or slim, cropped pants.
The ‘LBD’ Of Shoes – A Low Heeled Black Pump An absolute essential in every woman’s shoe closet has got be the low heeled black pumps. For all those times when a strappy sandal or an overly glamorous shoe seems inappropriate or in fact, to dressy, like an impromptu corporate meeting or even a funeral, the low heeled black pumps serves as the perfect savoir. Not only are the low heeled pumps stylish but they assure great comfortability as well. So, make sure you grab them quickly cause it’s a pair that is versatile enough to wear with almost anything. 38 N Av yaata • m ag h 2 0 6 7

The Absolute ‘Show Stopper’
– A Metallic High Heeled Dress Shoe
In life, come some very special occasions. For all these special occasions, we have special outfits, which to be honest, may not work very well with a pair of blacks. It’s a pair of metallic killer shoes that you should keep reserved for instances as such. A pair of metallic shoes is ideal with pastels, grays, silver or whites, but they’ll still work just great if you’re in for a LBD. We’re sure that this pair won’t just catch eyes but also make you the ‘spotlight.’
The ‘Warm Cup Of Cocoa’ – Slippers
An ‘Alternative’ To Shoes – A Tall
No, we’re not talking about the ‘glamorous’ ones here. But the ones that you slip into after a shower, or while you’re in your bathrobe or simply while you’re at home. Extremely comfy and free, a pair of slippers is what every woman will want when she returns home after a tiring day. After all, whatever shoes you wear during the day, your feet will appreciate being pampered at night.
Boot
Whether it’s high heeled, ankle length or something as warm and comfortable like the UGG’s, the cold weather screams for boots. Depending on the pairs you choose, everything from denim to skirts can look fantastic with boots. An effective suggestion before the winter fades away is going ultrahigh and raising the fashion stakes with over-

The ‘Comfort-Food’ Of The Shoes – A Semi-Casual Flat If comfort and style top your priority list, then its best you invest in a pair of flats. Ultra feminine and always stylish, flats serve as a popular choice for dressing up clothes without adding height or killing your feet. A great alternative to heels, flats go perfectly with just a pair of jeans as well as something not so casual like slacks. However, do avoid wearing them with wide-leg pants as they may look frumpy.

One of fashion’s beloved design trends, draping continues to remain on the current scene. Our kudos to Burberry’s Christopher Bailey! Whether it’s a pinched drape or the classic variation, the technique works for any shape. For a boyish figure, draping on the hips or bust can create the illusion of curves. To tackle problem areas, draping can help camouflage flaws by placing a strategic pinch as a distraction. Pair your own drapes with robust, towering heels.

Computer Association of Nepal (CAN) organized the Broadlink CAN Info-Tech from February 1- 6. The seventeenth edition of CAN Info-tech had more exhibitors than ever and had wide variety of tablet PCs, mobiles, notebooks and power equipments on display.
Interview with : Suresh K. Karna, President of Computer Association of Nepal Q. What are the objectives of organizing Can Info- tech? A. Our primary objective is to create awareness in people regarding information technology, technological innovation. The secondary objectives include creating a platform to connect consumers and business houses and also provide a platform for business to business transaction. It allows consumers to choose from a wide variety of products under a single roof. Besides these, we also conduct IT conference for 2-3 days which helps in transfer of knowledge among IT professionals and IT enthusiasts.
Q. How was this edition of CAN InfoTech different from the previous years? A. CAN has always tried to give new taste to the visitors at every CAN infoTech. The 17th Info- Tech was organized at a larger scale than the previous years with more stalls and more exhibitors and a larger turnout of visitors as well.
54 N Av yaata • m ag h 2 0 6 7
We also introduced online ticketing for our visitors this time to control crowd at the venue ticket counters. There was also an SMS service through which they were able to know about the products and also make bookings of the products on display. Our title sponsor Broadlink provided free wi-fi internet around the venue which proved to be a pleasant surprise for many visitors. Q. CAN Info- Tech has been able to retain its charm over the past sixteen years. What do you think is the USP of CAN Info-Tech? A. Over the years, CAN Info-Tech has been able to develop itself as a good brand by continuously catering to people’s growing demands of electronic goods and services. Subsequently, it has gained high acceptance among the people who have been very loyal to our events. Another factor that has helped CAN Info- Tech carve its niche in the market is our network in over 54 districts of Nepal. Q. What do you consider as major achievement of CAN Info-Tech in the last 16 years? A. Awareness regarding the Information Technology sector is definitely a major achievement for us. Moreover, the business community has also gained a good exposure in terms of promoting their products by participating at CAN InfoTech. Apart from these, we have been able to expand beyond the capital. We have network in 54 districts of Nepal and have been able to cater to the IT needs of people living outside Kathmandu.

Q.What was focused on this time’s IT conference? A. This was the 11th edition of IT conference where the theme, as in all previous years, was Building e-Nepal: Prospects and Challenges. Papers were presented on various issues like e-governance, e-tourism, e- health, e-business, e- security, e-education etc. The two day long conference saw participation of people from various sectors like education, tourism, banking and politics. Q. What is the major challenge while organizing an event like this one? A. Space availability has always plagued us. Earlier, there were less exhibitors and less visitors. But with the growing demand of IT products and services, the need to organize the event at a larger scale has been inevitable. However, the available space isn’t sufficient which always hinders our plans to expand more. Also the traffic management around the venue needs to be worked on to make the venue congestion free for the visitors. Q. How do you think IT fairs like CAN Info-Tech support the IT industry? A. Besides creating awareness regarding IT industry, IT fairs help business enterprises provide a platform to showcase their products to a large number of people. Many business enterprises also take Info-Tech as a launch pad for their latest products. As result latest technologies are introduced in Nepal through It fairs like Info-Tech.
The large number of young visitors testifies Nepalese youths’ increasing inclination towards Information Technology. Special things that your partner did for you I could never forget the day when my whole life seemed like it came to a halt. I got laid off from my job due to budget cut in our marketing department of our Bank. At the same time, my fiancé lost heavy amount of money which he has invested in a restaurant. We were few months away from our wedding so the trauma i suffered was unimaginable. I didn’t think that I would smile again for a long time. Ironically, it was our fifth anniversary. I had forgotten about our anniversary amidst the whole events of my horrible day. When i reached home in the evening, i saw a basket lying outside my door. At first, i was puzzled by that basket. As i approached to see the basket, there was a puppy in the basket with ribbon tied around his neck. I found a small note in the basket, as i opened it, it said “happy 5th anniversary”. My face glowed with happiness and i couldn’t stop smiling. The whole day turned into an eventful evening, where my family took me and my fiancé out for dinner and I enjoyed a bottle of really good wine. -Samriti Rana, 25
It was the best day of my life. I never thought that she loved me so much. Well, she’s there in UK and I’m here in Nepal. Maintaining a long distance relationship is kinda hard. We don’t get to talk to each other and mailing everyday is also sometimes impossible. But, it was my 21st b’day that she gave me a surprise! She sent me a one way ticket to UK! I didn’t know that I was so special to her. She mailed me writing that she missed every part of me. I was astonished and got tears in my eyes. It was the most beautiful birthday present. I don’t know how I’m going to thank her. No words can express how I felt that day. And yes about the trip…I had a wonderful trip and had loads of fun with her! Spending each moment with her was beautiful. I wish she was always here with me. I miss you! -Anonymous
Something your significant half did for you My boyfriend and I live in two different continents and slowly the distance and the resultant communication gap was straining our relationship. On the night before my birthday, I was skyping with him but I was feeling guilty that I was keeping him awake when actually he had an examination the next morning. At exactly 12, I was flooded with facebook and sms birthday wishes. We then said that he’d be right back in a while and the next moment, he had this huge birthday cake in front of him and all 18 candles. He sang me a birthday song, blew the candles and wished me a happy birthday. That was the sweetest thing anyone has ever done for me and I feel blessed to this day. -Suzeeta Neupane, 22

I had just joined work. Since, I was juggling both work and college I used to be under pressure a lot. There were times when I wouldn’t even have time to eat proper lunch. Once I was talking on the phone with my boyfriend and went on about how I was craving for veg and cheese momos. After about an hour, he called me up to tell me he was outside my office. I was happy no doubt that he had come to visit me. When he handed me a lunch box, I was so touched. There were the momos I had been wanting to eat and to top it off he had a small note addressed to me. -Nandita Gurung, 19

...“Maya felt he was ‘THE ONE’. Her happiness on finding the ‘perfect guy’ became the subject of envy”... :Maya's Story t seemed like a fairytale for nineteen year old Maya Lama (name changed) when she met the love of her life on a flight to China. She was on her way to pursue a degree in medicine. The guy she met on the flight Sudeep Gurung (name changed) was also going to China for the same purpose. Instant attractions led to lengthy conversations and within minutes of meeting Sudeep, Maya felt he was ‘THE ONE’. Her happiness on finding the ‘perfect guy’ became the subject of envy to many of her friends. Sudeep was smart, witty and good looking. For the first couple of months Maya was on cloud nine. Having a loved one in a foreign land comforted her. However, spending all the free time she could manage with her boyfriend was driving her apart from her friends. Whenever she made plans with her friends he would coax her into cancelling on them saying “I thought we would have a nice day together and stuff.” After few months of dating, he asked her to move in with him. Without any second thoughts Maya agreed and they started living together, a move which she regretted soon after.
The first round of abuse started when one day he returned home and there wasn’t any food on the table. When she suggested he make some noodles, his anger flared and a slap landed hard on her cheek. Caught by surprise, it wasn’t till minutes later that she realized what had actually happened. Before she could retaliate, Sudeep was already on his knees, apologizing. He reasoned for his behavior saying he had a hard day at work and when he couldn’t find food, his temper just rose. Maya felt like it was her fault and instead of getting mad at him, started preparing dinner. All was fine after that incident. He would shower her with gifts and leave her sweet messages and was even fine with her going out with friends. But her happiness didn’t last long. Once after a night out with friends, when she returned home late, Sudeep was furious. He had his helmet in his hands and without saying a thing raised his hand and was about to strike Maya’s face. Acting on an impulse, she blocked the blow with her hands resulting in severe damage to her fingers. Many of us may think that this was the end of their relationship. But NO! Maya stayed with him and the cycle of abuse continued for years. It has only been a year since Maya broke up with Sudeep. She is still unsure as to why she decided to stay with such a person for so long. “At the time I thought I was in love but sadly it was just an illusion,” says Maya who is now in a healthy relationship. There are many others like Maya who has faced abuse in a relationship but were either too scared or too confused to confide in friends and family.

Abusive relationships don’t always involve physical assaults. Following are some important warning signs that you may be involved in an abusive relationship. When someone harms you physically in any way, including slapping, pushing, shaking, smacking, kicking, and punching •
When your boyfriend or girlfriend tries to control different aspects of your life, such as how you dress, who you hang out with, and what you say •
When he/she frequently humiliates you or makes you feel unworthy •
When he/she threatens to harm you, or self-harm, if you leave the relationship •
When he/she twists the truth to make you feel you are to blame for your partner’s actions •
When he/she demands to know where you are at all times •
When he/she constantly becomes jealous or angry when you want to spend time with your friends •

:Untimely Death On the night of July 2, 2010 Manisha Limbu (name changed) was found dead; hanging by a bed sheet in her room. The news came as a shock to many who remember her as being a girl full of life; always smiling and making others laugh. It had only been a few months since she returned Nepal from US. Her reason for returning was to straighten her relationship with her boyfriend which had been a little rocky ever since she left Nepal. Close friends say Manisha was not the type to give up so easily on life. They later found that right before she decided to take her life; she had a massive fight with her boyfriend who was the one to find her dead. Her parents are still in shock regarding their daughter’s sudden death. They hope other parents do not go through what they had to and advise young lovers to think before getting into a committed relationship. One of Manisha’s close friends reveals “there was too much abuse in their relationship- a lot of name calling.” Although immediate reason for her suicide is still unknown, her relationship with her boyfriend it seems took its toll on her life.
Manisha’s and Maya’s stories are only bleak examples of what an abusive relationship can do to you. Normally, a person who is being abused is too scared to tell a parent or a friend about the abuse because they think that will bring pressure to end the relationship. People who are abused often feel like it’s their fault — that they “asked for it” or that they don’t deserve any better. But nobody deserves abuse. Whether it is physical or verbal, abuse is completely unacceptable. Many a times those who are in an abusive relationship don’t know that they are being abused. Here are some signs that will tell whether you are in an abusive relationship or not. 62 N Av yaata • m ag h 2 0 6 7
Unwanted sexual advances that make you uncomfortable are also signs that the relationship is moving towards the road of abuse. Many a times a partner may try to manipulate by saying stuffs like “If you loved me, you would do….” Such statements aren’t taken as a form of abuse by many but it portrays the person’s nature to control. These statements are used by people who are only concerned about getting what they want — not caring about what you want. So, if something doesn’t feel right in a relationship, don’t do it. You should learn to trust your intuition. Oprah Winfrey once famously said, “Love doesn’t hurt” completely in contrast to the perception of young boys and girls who believe if a person hurts them that means they love them more. Possessive nature is seen as being caring- a complete misconception. In many cases of abusive relationship, people stick with their partners hoping for a change in their behavior which ultimately never takes place. At the very first hint of abuse, it is best that you get out of it; away from the person and the relationship before it’s too late.
Signs That a Friend Is Being Abused •
unexplained bruises, broken bones, sprains, or marks
•
excessive guilt or shame for no apparent reason
•
secrecy or withdrawal from friends and family
•
avoidance of school or social events with excuses that don’t seem to make any sense

Visit Nepal 2011 For this and more! Text by: Shreeja Karki Photos by: Sonam Topke
A 45 minutes tempo ride, (2 tempos btw) an official inquiry in Nepal Tourism Board, almost two hours of discussion, one cup of milk coffee and then one cup of milk tea later, I came out dreaming bigger tomorrows for Nepal. The credits go to the three people who were participants of the discussion we had. Navyaata had an NTY check. Feel envious, Yes it was fun! And here we have the excerpts!
Your take on NTY 2011: For me, NTY 2011 is a national celebration in a large scale. It is an opportunity to create a momentum; not just for this year but for all the coming years ahead because tourism is one of the biggest sources of income for our ailing nation. Do you think NTY 2011 will be successful? Well, Nepalis are katti frustrated with the politics that NTY is a sigh of relief! Finally something nice is happening in the country. I am hopeful and I support Saradji’s idea. The spirit has already started and it is a good thing. NTB could come up with more creative ideas like declare all youths who are studying abroad as the ambassadors of the nation. What role should the jantaa play? In my opinion, they should be made the ambassadors of the nation and then they will help in whichever ways they can.
Samriddhi Rai, Miss Tourism Queen International
I recently came back from Gorkha and Manakamana trek. Sadly, I could not see any NTY happening there. 64 N Av yaata • m ag h 2 0 6 7
What role are you playing? Me and a couple of my friends are planning on starting a youtube channel that will be travelling to places and posting videos as we go along and promoting NTY in our own little ways. I recently came back from Gorkha and Manakamana trek. Sadly, I could not see any NTY happening there. Hopefully, it is happening in rest of the country. We are also asking all travelers to post these videos in our website and trying to create a platform where everybody can participate together. That is the NTY spirit that I know of. It is not about being the Tourism Queen but about being a youth of Nepal.

Sweta Gurung, Instructor for Cultural Study Abroad Programs Your take on NTY 2011: I came to know about NTY 2011 through PATA. PATA coming back to Nepal after a long time means PATA is trying to bring the focus back to our country post Civil war. The insurgency has really affected the country and the people! Do you think NTY 2011 is going to be successful? I feel we have a lot of lofty ideas. We need to basically check those ideas, for to have a will is one thing and to get the means to achieve it is something else altogether. An example about the new trekking routes that I have been hearing of. The question is ‘Do we NEED new trekking routes?’ How about giving a facelift to the existing ones? However, absolute prediction is difficult for I think NTY has not been very transparent. For ordinary Nepalis, the message is not very clear except for
Your take on NTY 2011? We have come a long way since officially announcing NTY in 2008. We have had a change of three governments already, and there have been times when we almost decided on no NTY. However, we stuck to our Yes NTY with an aim to bring people together. NTY is a way to convey the message to the world that Nepal is a safe country. Now, it is a wishful thinking to Hope that every Nepali across the nation becomes aware about NTY but with a literacy rate of less than 60% and a high rate of load shedding, we can only hope. We also want to remind the importance of tourism for the trickle down effects it has, for the idea of a sustainable tourism. We are also trying to establish the presence Nepal in the international market. Even to those parts of the globe where we are already known, we want to be known about a country more than just Pashupatinath and casinos. Do you think NTY 2011 will be successful? “Our target is 1 million. This may or may not be achievable we cannot quite say because we have just begun. The prediction is difficult to make with an

their idea that ‘NTY aaudeicha, ramaailo huncha, dheraii tourists aauncha, banner raakhidiu!’ Without being clarified about what we are aiming at, I cannot predict. How can the jantaa help? 2011 is an invitation to all local people to participate in their own ways. It is time for people to step up and start taking some responsibilities. As a Nepali, it is very easy for us to play this blame game. Yes, the past has been very difficult and the current political situation is challenging, but it has come to a point. Do we just want to stay around complaining? Let us participate in all ways we can. It can be as simple as picking up trash when you are walking by. That should not be embarrassing to us-it should rather be a matter of pride. Not doing anything about the situation should be embarrassing though! We need to remember that People are watching us,
eleven whole months to go. But what it is going to leave for definite is a mark in the nation. Look at the situation now; Nepalis have geared up and want to do something. An instance can be the Far western villagers starting home stay programs. New aspirations and hopes among people in Nepal because of NTY, the airport is being improved, all bureaucrats are geared up. By the end of the year, inspiration will also be left. And that is a guaranteed success for us!” How can the jantaa help? I want to clarify that NTY is not only NTB’s responsibility. I invite ownership. Every Nepali has a stake in this part. Small ideas give way to big achievements and we are just making way for these ideas. Aba ta kehi garau! NTY is just a catalyst. Let’s do something for Nepal.”
we are choosing to be ambassadors of the nation. Traffic alone is not going to solve the problem, the ministers alone are not going to solve the problems, it is time for all of us to step up! What role are you playing? For me; every year, every month, every day has been a tourism year. I work with American students who spend three months in Nepal learning about the culture and language. So, 2011 for me is the same as 2008, 2009 and 2010. In my own neighborhood, I am recreating a park. But for all this to happen, you don’t have to wait for NTY 2011 to happen. It can happen any year, any day.”
We want to be known about a country more than just Pashupatinath and casinos. Sarad Pradhan Media Consultant NTY
How are the reviews? There have been constant international reviews. Some instances are write-ups in The Sydney Morning Herald and telecast about Nepal and NTY in Durdarshan, Star News, India TV and other forms of media. The situation is not as bad as we think. send us your feedback at editor@nav yaata.com

And then you have stress. And then you have constant worries. Worries about appearing good, maintaining weight; and then worries about being just the balanced kind- not too possessive, not too indifferent! Yes. And then, as if these were not enough, you have all your resources wasted. Dear human, look at the world around you today. Have we not gotten all our resources wasted? Look at the million dollar industry of Valentine’s Day today. Products- couples’ tees, couples’ key rings, couples’ accessories; advertisements- emotional ones that revolve around love; movies- do I even have to explain this?; songs- songs from everything from “I saw her” to “I liked her eyes” to “I fell in love” to “We broke up” to “I hate his new girl”, gifts, clothes, your Energy, eat outs, hangouts...so much for love? So much for V Day? Sigh! With due respect to St. Valentine, I would utter a simple prayer for him and rather have a hearty meal and shop all day or maybe just crash at some friend’s place and avoid all the drama to help the colossal industry foster! Now, now, look at the singles. Awesome life. Talk to anybody you want to. Like anybody you want to. Hang out with the freakiest people in town. Risk your life. Eat your heart out! You have a choice! He has been bad to me but I know he loves me. “So, made plans for 14th already?” “What 14th?” I ask. “Duuh! Now don’t try and act like you absolutely don’t know.” Shanti smiles her sarcastic smile at me. She is my colleague; I am great friends with her. “What? Is it February already?”
I
get up in the morning. Well, Fine yes if I have a day off, I wake up in the afternoon, ears plugged and skin lotioned! Forget my digression and get back, I get up in the morning, always stare at my alarm in disbelief (for I apparently seem to end up oversleeping every single day) Horror in my eyes, excuses inside my mind, toothpaste swimming inside my mouth- I pick the other day’s unfolded jacket from a chair in the living room, kick start my scoot and tie my shoelace as my scoot w a r m s up. I utter a slight prayer, open the gates and try flying to my workplace (which obviously does not happen Duh!) I am a part timer at three places and work ends around 5. After that, it is usually a packed late lunch at one of the bhattis or a hyper sandwich eating contest in Thamel. When the stars begin appearing, it is home. Valentine’s Day, No Valentine’s Day; life has a similar routine every day. And so it will be this year. We went for a last minute shopping spree today. Well, we included me and my three other friends. Z had a breakup. Locked herself up inside her room for two weeks now, she wouldn’t take our calls, ignore texts; I asked her why she didn’t switch it off, better! She said her boyfriend MIGHT have called. Might have? Hell with “Might”. Her Facebook wall got raped by all of us with our constant worries, consolations, questions, Whys and Whats. On top of her wall, was my comment; ‘Once you are over all the drama, hit me back tragedy queen! I have plans!’ (Of course I did not!) And there we were today, window shopping because we were broke, a desperate try to drag her back to her normal self. I brainwashed her that the guy was a jerk, singlehood was so much more fun and as we left each other and exchanged Xoxos, I welcomed her to the gang. I received a text three minutes ago. 3 minutes and 26 seconds to be more precise.
‘Heyo! I’m sorry I know I suck but we patched up. He apologized and he was just too cute. I mean, okay he has been bad to me but at the end of the day, when I look into his eyes, I KNOW that he loves me. Huge hearts. J. Got no guts to talk to you right now. I will call you in a while.’ I know, I know. I mean I know. Okay Fine I do not know. Who do all these people think they are? Come for all the relationship advice all crying and depressed and shoulders drooped. And when I feel like I have pumped some sense into them, things like these happen. This is not the first time. Yes. Humor me. ‘He is just too possessive.’‘He does not like my friends.’‘She wants me to text her all day!’ ‘She wants me to have no other girls as friends.’ ‘He fought with my ex for the fifth time today.’ Most of my friends are in a relationship. That is not really the point. The point is that they come to take advices from me. LOL to that first of all. For I have never been in a real relationship ever. Exactly! Where is the sense in that? I have seen some of my friends quit smoking for their better halves; some have become ‘liked’ FB poets thanks to the gazillion remakes of Devdas and the people who have left them and their unrequited loves. Plus all the Korean love stories! (How can I forget that?) Love ‘might’ exist, oh fine, but all the drama? Why all the drama ‘just’ for V day? This small question inside my tiny brain enlarged as the V day event requests came bouncing one by one to me. Singles- more expensive tickets, couples-concession? What? Spare us singles Lord! Isn’t V-day becoming uselessly useful? All the hearts, all the flowers, all the RED; for definite, pretty it is. My only concern, dearie, hasn’t it started to gradually become suffocating? Or is it just me? To get a larger picture, I approached some rocking singles in K-town! Shivana, 21, remarked, “It is not that I have a problem with V day but couples start getting Extremely carried away and become extremely romantic in public places. That is not romantic for me. Not cute. It is puke straightaway.” Chiraag, 23 said, “Why be in a relationship and miss all the fun? When you are single, nobody pokes you, it’s F for freedom! And any day could be V day!” Noyona, 23 remarked, “Well I might be sounding traditional

Things I didn’t know about Bryan Adams and thought you would like to know!
1 While in Vancouver, British Columbia, he washed dishes, sold pet food, and worked in record stores, and at the age of 15, Adams quit school to play in nightclubs with bands like Shock and Sweeney Todd, who released an album called If Wishes Were Horses with the fifteen year old Adams as lead singer. 2 3
In 1978, at the age of 18, Adams sent a few demo recordings to A&M Records in Toronto. Not long afterwards he signed with them for the sum of One dollar.
18 till i’d die...... 18 till i’d die...... On 29 January 2005, Adams joined the CBC benefit concert in Toronto for victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake. Twenty years after performing at Live Aid in the USA, Adams
played at Canada’s Live 8 Show in Barrie, Ontario. Later that year, he performed in Qatar and raised £1.5M ($2,617,000) from the concert .He also auctioned a white Fender Stocaster guitar signed by many of the world’s prominent guitarists. The guitar raised a total of 3.7 million US dollars for charity and thus set a record as the world’s costliest guitar. The money went to Qatar’s “Reach Out to Asia” campaign to help the underprivileged across the continent. Money raised also went to some of his own projects like rebuilding a school in Thailand and building a new sports center in Sri Lanka, both of which had been devastated by the Indian Ocean Tsunami.
Everthing I do...... Everthing I do......

Amigo Amor Fruita de Mar
(Fusion seafood Combination) Photos by: Sonam Topke
A Spanish and Latin American cuisine, Amigo Amor Fruita de Mar translates to fruit of the sea for a friend or a lover. Keeping in sync with the meaning of the name, Al Fresco at Soaltee Crowne Plaza is especially incorporating this dish in their Valentine’s Day menu. According to Executive Sous Chef Yuba Raj Pokhrel of Al Fresco “This dish is a combination of sea food and symbolizes relationship between everything on the plate.”Along with this lavish sea food platter, Al Fresco has prepared a special Valentine’s Day menu which includes everything from starters to desserts. Reporter’s Review On a first look, this dish can be a little intimidating for people who have never tried sea food. But once you overcome your fear of claws and actually taste the dish, you will enjoy it. Believe me, I did. From crabs to prawns to lobsters ‘amigo amor fruita de mar’ is indeed a sea food lover’s delight. And this grand dish offers so much more. Nicely seasoned vegetables provide some contrasting taste. One of the pleasant surprises of the dish is the Mashed potato and green peas on a lemon grass stick; yum. This is one of those dishes which cannot be eaten alone. So, take your special someone and enjoy the taste of sea this Valentine’s Day.

he s t o D A musician with a style, the band member of Abhaya and the Steam Injuns, Abhaya Subba Weise many may not know is also a writer at heart. Through Abhaya’s blog, this svelte lady will be sharing her thoughts and much more. We have all loved the way she rocks all her performances, and we know her words will do the same. Read on!!! I have a problem. An expensive problem; Every time I stroll the streets of Durbar Marg, I am drawn to the allure of those haughty yet naughty soles that beg me to take a look at them, feel them, smell them and then try them. Obediently, giving in to my desire, I push the glass door of one of those shoe shops and breathe in…the smell of shoes, new shoes. On display are shoes of soft calf leather, funky shoes with industrialised buckles, boots that would command a second look no matter who would wear them. I stand in the middle of the room enjoying this moment…the suspension between looking at all the shoes and choosing the ones that I take home. When it comes to shoes I am a lustful buyer. I don’t check the comfort level, nor the practicality of the heels and I must confess lately, I don’t even consider the price (deep guilt)…my biggest concern is the personality of the shoes. Do the shoes talk? Is the pair a conversation starter, a show stopper and will it streamline my legs in a matter of seconds? I slip into a pair of black leather knee length shoes with peep toes. I check the mirror, the sales girl murmurs her approval but I flinch at the idea of having my legs covered and don’t see the point of my toes peeping through a pair of boots. Padding on my bare feet I find a pair of yellow moccasins with exquisite beadwork. I glide into the shoes and enjoy the comfort and the feel of the sole. A look at the mirror negates my choice immediately as the flat heels do not flatter my legs at all. I reluctantly abandon the Red Indian shoes and scan the goods around once more. I gasp as I spot an unusual pair of shoes. It is a black pair of stilettos that look like boots. It has black netted socks inside the shoes with several tiny silver buckles strapped onto it. The heels are at least five inches but now that I am in love, five inches are a cinch for me. Into the shoes go my feet…mirror mirror on the wall what do u make of these shoes, do tell all… Legs longer – check, hips look slimmer – check, does it feel sexy – check! I refuse to look at the price of the shoes as I count out the money and head home. Oh life is full of ecstatic moments. As I inspect my shoe closet…I realize that I have stopped counting the number of shoes I have. I caress a pair of leopard printed Zara boots lovingly and shove a pair of wedges to the back to make room for my excruciatingly fine pair of Pepe shoes. I need a new closet for my heels or I need to give some of my

I take out an old pair of knee length boots, soft and green. I almost hear a sigh from the pair. It has been a while since I have worn this pair. Five years ago these boots were setting the stage on fire…if one searches the internet for my performances – you will most likely see this pair in a lot of images. Hesitantly I dump the shoes into a carton. I have decided to let go of some of my shoes. Unwillingly I dump several pair of shoes – brand new but out of style, into the carton. Each pair of shoes is telling me a tale as they sink into the coffin. There are those pretty blue sandals that made me feel like a girl when everyone thought I was a tomboy, the boots that slyly gave me that extra height, the first pair of boots that I had bought in Hong Kong which got me noticed and transformed me into a rocker. Those shoes that hugged me, built my personality even when I was feeling down…shoes that changed me as the glass slippers did Cinderella. Feeling a little ill at ease I wonder which poor woman would wear my knee high boots or my six inches wedges anyway…how ridiculous of me to think that giving away my shoes would help the poor. Relieved, I start putting my old shoes back into the cupboard. I may not wear them again but there they shall stay for these are the soles that have helped me build my character. Every time I slipped into any one of them, they made me feel taller and stronger. They made me ready to walk onto any stage, any stage of my life. Thank you Sole sistas – thank you!

Hemanta and Shishir ritus:
urmeric is one of the spices that have immense benefits than just adding color and T flavor to food. Turmeric is loaded with lots of benefits and therapeutic values from purifying blood to preventing diseases like cancer and Alzheimer. And different researches have been done to prove that.
In Ayurveda , It is considered as Varnya Herb meaning herb for enhancing complexion . Traditionally ,turmeric was used with other herbs as a body scrub and facial ubtan for the brides and groom before the wedding day. Giving bath with Haldi-Chandan (bukuwa) before wedding is tradition still practiced today. Turmeric when used internally is excellent blood purifier and anti bacterial. polluted blood is one of the reason for skin care problems hence using turmeric in the diet help to purify blood , which takes care of many skin conditions. It also has excellent cleansing property. Turmeric helps to reduce pigmentation on the face and evens out the skin tone. The Ayurvedic oil preparation with turmeric helps to reduce stretch mark on pregnant women. Turmeric had excellent anti oxidant properties helps to reduce premature aging of skin. External application of turmeric on skin also helps to restore and maintain vibrant and healthy skin . Turmeric can be used internally and externally to improve skin condition but we have to make sure that we get pure organic turmeric . Not the ones with added colors. Turmeric milk has lots of therapeutic values. It relieves internal bleeding. Just boil your milk with a pinch of turmeric and 1 pod of cardamom for two minutes and drink warm. Do this for a month you will see some improvement on your skin. Add saffron for better result. But be careful to not put a lot. Only small pinch is more than enough and believe me it does not taste bad at all. 84 N Av yaata • m ag h 2 0 6 7

Hemanta and Shishir ritus:
Deep cleansing Scrub:
Mix a pinch of turmeric with half a spoon of sugar, honey and milk mix well as apply to the skin and massage for about 2 minutes and rinse with warm water. Honey and milk softens the skin, Sugar is a good exfoliate and turmeric helps to clean and even the skin tone.
External applications:
Turmeric can be added with the homemade facial masks and scrubs It’s anti bacterial, cleansing and antioxidant properties helps in achieving healthy looking skin.
Facial Mask:
Mix yogurt with a pinch of turmeric and ¼ tsp of sandalwood. Apply to the skin and keep for about 10 minutes and rinse with warm water. This mask is very hydrating and cleansing. Excellent for summer. Turmeric leaves yellow stain everywhere so we have to be little careful while using it. Also keep a separate towel to wipe your face after facemask. Use the same towel every time you apply the mask or scrub to prevent all the towels of getting stained. Use it once a week for about a month and see the difference. When we think of turmeric we think of the spice that’s used for cooking. But our ancestors were smarter than we think and they did not eat anything without a reason behind it. If we look at ancient Ayurvedic texts , hey have detailed explanation of benefits and uses of each and every herbs and spices that two use even today with the explanation of season and time to eat them and the reason behind using them. Every spices and herbs we use for our traditional cooking have immense health benefits if used properly. Well-spiced food, (I don’t mean hot and oily food but food cooked with good amount of herbs and spices) helps in digestion and if we digest well our skin naturally gets better. We have a tendency to follow everything western which is not a bad thing and but there are lots of old wisdom in our part of the world even in beauty and skin care that’s is so holistic and we are unaware of it. Or we do not believe in it because it may not give instant result. But if we make a lifestyle of Ayurvedic skin care and food habits we will have a healthy and holistic life and we can have excellent digestion and we can prevent ourselves from many diseases and that in itself give us a radiant skin.

He works along with his wife ,wakes up when the sun rises and puts his equipments down in the dusk everyday. He has no other choice than to work as a stone breaker and earn for himself and his family. Believe it or not,Hari has been working under the same job for 20 years and still counting. Their wish which was to be fulfilled was that they wanted a mattress and a quilt because they did not have enough at home and it was too cold at night.
Despite living through such hardness and misery due to our help,we brought a wide smile and happiness on their faces and saw a teardrop rolling down into the chin of Hari’s wife. Then we departed ,so lets we all hope for hari and his family to live a happy life in years to come.

navyaata/TRAVEL
In the last issue, we introduced our readers to Sunil Tamang; a young travel enthusiast who aims to solo trek all across the Himalayan region for a noble cause- to raise awareness about the climate change. We at Navyaata are delighted to share with our readers that Sunil has already embarked on his journey. This issue forward, Sunil will be sharing with us his experience through his journal. Due to problems of Internet connection, he was unable to send us pictures of his trip till now. Nevertheless, we have his travel updates in his words. Jan28 Kathmandu to Charaali Today, I am very excited not because it’s my birthday but because today is the day I am putting my dream into action. My dream- to trek solo across the Himalayas of Nepal for 2010 to create awareness, to get united to fight against climate change and to promote the spirit of adventure among youngsters. I had a small birthday celebration with family and relatives in the morning. They all wished me the best for my trip. My flight was delayed by half an hour- not the best way to start your journey with. But after 35minutes of flying in the air, I arrived at Biratnagar which felt like a total different world to me. The weather was warm and I could feel the warmth of Terai. I collected my trekking bag which weighed 35 kilos and took a cab to Charali (5km away from Birtamod). After about 3 hours drive I met my college mate, Samrakshya and decided to camp in front of her house. Her family members were thrilled and excited to discover about my journey into Himalayas. Thanks to her family for their kindness and hospitality. Jan29 Charali to Taplejung You might be surprised if I say I woke up at 2am today. But it’s the truth; the reason was I had to catch a bus at 3:30am which would take me to Taplejung. After an hour packing I was ready to go. The bus ride from Charali to Taplejung is probably the longest bus trip I have taken. The weather at Taplejung was totally different to that of Biratnagar. It was cold. What I loved the most about today was the road ride till Illam. The view of Tea farming over the hills was simply beautiful. Not knowing anyone in Illam, I had a tough time finding a place to camp. After hours of going here and there, I saw a military camp. After few minutes of talk with the authorities, they agreed to provide me with a camping place and also offered dinner with them. We had a short conversation about my trip and other usual topics. I was exhausted due to the long bus ride on such a bumpy and dusty road and hit the bed early.

Jan30 Taplejung to Suketar After a good night sleep in my tent in military area, I woke up at 6:30 and packed my gears as usual. Then I bought a litre of kerosene which will come in handy where there are no habitations. A cup of tea and puris was my breakfast for the day. After bidding goodbye to my friends at the military camp I began my first walk of the trip. Past few minutes of walking, I met a girl. I came to know she was a reporter for Radio Taplejung. She invited me to her office and there introduced me to other staff. A short interview of mine was taken. I then proceeded to Suketar. After climbing about 100m uphill, I encountered a monastery. Offered my prayers and then started walking uphill to reach Suketar. Generally, people take 2hours to reach Suketar from Taplejung. But for me with my 35 kilos backpack, it was impossible to reach in 2 hrs. I took 3 hrs. I found a camping site and now I am in Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trail. Jan31 Suketar I am still in Suketar due to bad weather. Suketar is a Sherpa village. A remote area, there are only 3 – 4 mountain guest houses and 6 -7 restaurants and some grocery stores. Feb 1 Suketar to Kunjari The weather is still bad. But nevertheless, I have to move on. Walked around three hours through the jungles to reach Lalikharka. After a brief spot at Lalikharki I walked another five hours to reach Kunjari. There are lots of people from Rai, Sherpa and Gurung community residing here. Feb 2 Kunjari to Phumpe Danda I stayed at a place called Phumpe Danda which is around eight hours walk from a place called Sinbu. Feb3 Phumpe Danda to Yampphu din After two and hours walk from Phumpe Danda I reached Mamankhe where I stopped for lunch. After lunch, I headed to Yamphu din which is five hours walk from Mamankhe. The walk from Phumpe Danda to Mamankhe took me through jungle and different villages. This has been my journey till now.

FRI DAYS
T
he sassy owner of Foot Fetish and Itta Japanese restaurant, Lisa Mukhia is a popular face in the Nepalese party scenario. An outdoor sporty person that she claims to be, Lisa loves having fun with her friends and dancing the night away. Navyaata: What is your idea of a Friday night? Lisa: Friday is the onset of the weekend. And since my friends work on all other days, that is one day that we try and have fun. And since the next day, Saturday is a day off for me as I don’t have to abide by the normal routines, I have hell lot of fun on Fridays! Navyaata: Your wildest Friday ever? Lisa: There have been many wild Fridays. The most recent
one was that I had a “pretend” birthday party. My friends and I had a wonderful time hopping to different places and that was quite a memorable night. Text by: Shreeja Karki / Photos by: Usha Pun, Sonam Topke and Suzeeta Gurung
Navyaata: What is your favorite drink? Lisa: I am more of a wine person and I also like
champagne. But then if I have to get drunk, I take shots! (smiles!) Navyaata: Where do you usually hang out? Lisa: I used to hang out a lot at Factory. But these days, it
can be anywhere, even a friend’s house, not necessarily at bars and clubs. I love dancing, so anywhere that I can dance has to be it.

BEAUTY
from Monita Hair and Beauty Academy in Hongkong and has more than five years of experience in the field.
I never go to the beauty parlor to do my eyebrows as I do it at home using tweezers. But I have overplucked my brows. What should I do?
winner then try dark brown matt lipstick with hazel brown contact lens with nude bronze eyes and cheeks. Your olive complexion should easily pull off this 90s craze.
-Sunita Magar, Bouddha Beauty Expert: Pabi Gurung View Beauty Care and Training Institute
Hi! I like to have rosy cheeks but I tend to overdo most of the times. How do I find the perfect blush color to go along with my skin tone? Some say that one should match the color of the blush to the eye color, is it true? -Sumnima Chhetri, Baneshwore
Blushers should be applied to enhance your skin tone and not change it. The use of blush should make the skin look soft and natural. A simple trick is to bend over for 30 seconds and slowly stand up. Now the area which looks flushed is where the blush should be used. And color close to your flushing cheeks should be used. Apricot shades are perfect for pale skin while dusty roses for darker skin tone. Powder blusher should be used for oily skin while gel tint should be used for dry skin.
Don’t panic since it’s already done. Take this as an opportunity to change d shape of your eyebrows. If you still feel uneasy then brow pencils are lifesaver. Just use the right one that goes with your eyebrow color. Hey there! Now that it’s winter and gray, I would like to try various bold colors both for my lips and eyes. I have an olive complexion and small eyes. What colors and styles would you suggest? -Nitya Shrestha, Kalopool
Olive complexion can pull off any colors and given that you’ve got small eyes, you can play with any bold color without looking too dramatic. But bold lips and eyes don’t always go hand in hand so be careful. Dark eyes with bright lips can give that diva look whereas metallic eyes with nude glossy lips can give u that effortless vixen look OR if u want be the standout
I have a lot of pimples on my back. It cannot be seen most of the times, but whenever I wear a dress or a back-exposing tee, I am utterly conscious of it and try to hide my back with my hair. Please suggest me a solution? -Shreya Sherchan, Balaju
Pimples on back are due to the clogged pores and excess sebum and sweats. Get a back scrub which will help get rid of both clogged pores n blemishes by exfoliating the dead skin cells too, you can always prepare your own scrub at home using brown grainy sugar and lemon juice and use once in 2 weeks. I am always up to experimenting with make-up and hair and I would like to try exciting colors on my lips. What colors are in rage this season? -Swikriti Dahal, Gairidhara
Well glossy is so summery so why not go for some matt red or burgundy ruby! Its classy red this winter so try out MAC ruby woo or CHANEL rouge allure or if u just want to go subtle, stick to some peachy orange shade glosses. During winters, I have this sickly whitish flakes on my skin. I use a lot of moisturizer but that seems to keep it away only for some while. Is there any special lotion or ointment that I should use? -Merina Dongol, Bhaisepati
White flakes on skin are mostly due to over drying, it’s called the skin dandruff too. You can get professional help for body scrubbing which exfoliates the dead dry skin flakes and after that get an hour of oil massage which invigorates and revitalizes your skin. You can also make the winter lotion at home! Mix equal parts of glycerin, vitamin E and Johnson baby oil and use it at night. Wash it off in the morning followed by heavy moisturizer and sun block.(as glycerin tend to sun tan the skin). 100 N Av yaata • m ag h 2 0 6 7

Navyaata’s in-house Stylist and Fashion writer Akash Rajbhandari is a Fashion aficionado. A Fashion Guru as we at Navyaata like to call him, Akash will be taking on your fashion queries this month. You can send us your queries to editor@navyaata.com
My cousin sent me a pair of brown Uggs which is lovely. But I have trouble pairing it up with clothes. I am pleasantly plum so if you could suggest me some ensembles, it would be lovely. - Nitika Prasai, Baneshwor
Uggs, I must say is a must for this winter. Since you own a Brown Uggs, I would suggest you pair them with dark colored skinny pants and long sweaters. A dark colored skinny pants or legging will accentuate your legs and if you are on plum side, long sweater will complement the legging and the brown uggs. I am really into headwear. For this winter I want to wear lots of funky caps. I have a round face. What type of winter caps do you think will best complement my face type? - Ashra Shrestha, Naxal
It’s great to hear that you like to try out different headwears. Since you have a round shaped face, to keep your face from looking like a perfect sphere, go for something that will make
102 N Av yaata • m ag h 2 0 6 7
your face look slimmer and long like angular shapes to contrast with your face shape. Newsboy hats and cloches almost work better for almost everybody.
Similarly, if you are pairing it with jeans, wear long and loose blouse with long sweater.
I want to know what is in for guys this winter.
I have a little dark complexion but I want to experiment with colours. Can you suggest me some colours that will best match my skin tone?
- Suraj Lama, Jawlakhel
This winter guys are up for dressing up, military style. Instead of casual or loud street wear, this winter elegance and sophisticated clothes are in for guys. Winter wears like sack suit, a relaxed cut with classic details, as for blazers - tweed and velvet will work wonders this winter. Hi, need your help big time. I want to invest in a nice pair of boots but I am confused as to what type should I buy. I have a Pear shaped body so please help - Christina Sunwar, Naya Bazaar
Ankle length booties would be the best boots for Pear shaped body. For women, whose bottom half proportion is bigger, women are recommended to wear skirts that accentuate their waist and cover their midsection and big thighs. Therefore, wearing booties with tucked in top and umbrella skirt will flatter your body.

- Dila Rai, Bansbari
This winter blue, pink, yellow will reign. However, for a darker complexion, I would suggest you try on warm colors like red and orange. As you try on new colors, you can find your own taste and create your own outfit accordingly.

A final year student of Media Studies in Kathmandu University, Rajan Kathet is a budding film maker. His short film ‘ Lust’ was adjudged the best film in the Buds Film Festival. Currently, he is busy with post production of his latest venture ‘Medical Balloon’; a movie which deals with a child’s psychology. This month, Rajan reviews three of his favourite movies and tells Navyaata why they deserved the top three spots.
12 Angry Men
96 mins, black and white, 1957 The first feature film of television-trained director Sidney Lumet, 12 Angry Men is a powerful and gripping tale about a diverse group of jurors who are brought together to deliberate after hearing the facts in a seemingly open and shut murder trial case. Simple in its presentation but powerful in content, this movie is a low budget movie which took only seventeen days to make. The entire movie revolves around a round table discussion between jurors who are given the task to decide the fate of an eighteen year old, uneducated Puerto Rican boy accused of killing his own father. Adapted from a stage play, although this movie is confined to a particular setting, it manages to entice the audiences and keep them glued to the screens. The distinctiveness shown in each character is what I admired the most about the movie. 12 Angry Men proves that money is not the primary requirement for making a good cinema. Nepali film makers can learn a lot from this movie.
A Clockwork Orange 137 mins, color, 1971
‘A Clockwork Orange’ begins with a stare that is charismatic and lively. A dark satirical science fiction film ‘A Clockwork Orange’ has been widely discussed for its rich aesthetic parts- a good combination of artistic props and good photography- that compels! This movie is a story of a violent youth, Alex (Malcolm McDowell), who leads a gang of four thugs. Alex finds pleasure in classical music, rape and ultra violence. In one of his violent endeavors Alex accidentally kills a lady and is sent to jail. While in jail he volunteers to be treated for rehabilitation using the aversion technique- a controversial treatment technique that involves strapping the patient to the chair, forcing the eyes open to make them watch violent movies. The film’s main question is whether use of such technique to stop immoral behavior is justifiable or not.
Aakrosh
144 mins, color, 1980 Directed by one of the most underrated directors of Indian cinema, Govinda Nihalani, Aakrosh stars Naseeruddin Shah, Smita Patil, Om Puri and Amrish Puri. Aakrosh in Hindi means the cry of the wounded. Like other works of Nihalani, this movie also delves into real depiction of human anguish. Aakrosh is about the oppression of a peasant by his land owners and his foreman. The victim Lahanya Bhiku (Om Puri) is badly tormented. His wife gets raped and murdered by his foreman. Instead of justice, he is accused of murdering his own wife. Throughout the movie Bhiku doesn’t utter a single word, it is only in the very end that we hear him speak or rather cry in pain. A well executed story together with brilliant presentation and characterization is what makes Aakrosh one of the best Indian movies of all times. 104 N Av yaata • m ag h 2 0 6 7

Muna Madan
new writer on the scene, Sushant Gurung published his first book on 2061 B.S. His first book“Aitihasik Upanyas haruka Bisleshan” and his second book is “B.P. ka Upanyas ma Naribaad” which was published on 2063 B.S. He started out writing articles in newspapers and literary magazines. By now he has written more than 5 dozen articles and later in the future he plans to compile them and publish a book. His inspiration is “Parijat” and says that he has not missed any book of hers. He says, “ I developed the habit of reading from my childhood. In my days, reading was only the important thing. I have read countless Nepalese books which inspires me everyday to become a better writer. Many books have inspired me, but when i think of the best ones, those that come immediately come to my mind are Pani ko gham by Amar Neupane, Madhavi by Madan Mani Dixit and Radha by Krishna Dharabasi . mong these books, I’d like to discuss Shirish ko Phool, Radha and Muna Madan.

Three books of my preference:
Author: Laxmi Prasad Devkota Muna madan is one of the best creation of great poet of Nepali literature, Laxmi Prasad Devkota. This book describes a well elaborated poor society of Nepalese rural area. In this book ,what Madan does in Lhasa and what are the difficulties he has to face there and during his journey is well focused. While going through the different countryside areas, Madan catches a deadly disease, but his accompanied friends turn out to be selfish. Finally he will be rescued by a man who is considered to be a lower cast in Nepal which has been beautifully expressed through the line Manche thulo dil le huncha jaat le hudaina. So it is said that a man is said to be great and honourable not because of his race and caste but by a heart in which there is a progression of love and humanity. Above and all, Laxmi Prasad Devkota wants to stabilize the facts of traditional societies, unscientific beliefs, poverty, love, friendship, the relationship of husband and wife, love between mother and son etc. Because of the combination of all these categories of human life, this book has earned a great successful journey in Nepali literature and it will be continue to be one of the most read literary work in Nepal.
Radha
Author: Krishna Dharabasi Radha by Krishna Dharabasi is wonderful novel based on traditional era of Lord Krishna and Radha. The traditional plot of the story makes the readers feel that Dharabasi is narrating us the same old story of love of Radha and Krishna. However , the story based on the traditional plot it portrays the modern era in a dramatic way such that it speaks of so many hidden things. Radha is a novel of the love, determination and mainly it is about woman revolution against the patriarchal society. The novel is well written and its poetic feelings and the sentences arranged in such a way that it creates a different feeling in the readers. The traditional plot tells us a modern story where a woman is never as before. The society is being democratic and male and females are equal. The novel also gives us the outline of the insurgency period of our country. Overall , what I liked the most was- as I kept reading this novel, it captivated me and my thoughts.
Shirish ko phool
Author: Parijat One of the finest book ever written in Nepali literature is Shirish Ko Phool and one of my personal favorite. I have read this novel over four times or say five times and each time I finish the novel I feel pang and it hangs on my head for so many days. The novel has a wonderful language-“the simplest of all”. When I had read it for the first time I hadn’t really understood the novel, I felt the love story in it and I could not understand the passion in the novel. But this day I may say I am able to figure out the passion and the feelings of the author. I really appreciate the wonderful story, the plot the real setting, the real character and the situation of the novel till it ends. The most eluding thing about the novel is the flow of passion. When I sit up and read this book again, the same level of energy I feel, the vibration in my heart and every emotions becomes same, as I have read it.
