“A 19 year old would like, buy the best outfits, match with all her friends, and go out for coffee or clubbing. For me, I need to attend events, seminars, programs”. Photgraph by $uzeeta Gurung 8 N Av yaata •BAISHAKH 2 0 6 8
With dreams in her eyes and ideas in her head she takes a stride to be the best.
I
t was early morning over a cup of coffee that I met our cover girl, Miss Nepal 2010, Sadichha Shrestha. Straight from college, she looked fresh as ever. It has been 7 months since the crowning, but she still has her feet firmly on the ground. In some ways she reminds me of myself when I was crowned. We seem to be the only two Miss Nepals to win 3 subtitles along with the crown. We both are contestant No.1. During the contest she was my favorite all along and she did not disappoint me. Our connection happened via facebook while she was contesting (She has deactivated her account now). I had written to her after a talk session with the contestants, and told her that she can do it, just don’t lose faith. Apparently that message happened when she was questioning herself if she could compete or not. I know the initial journey is not easy. At 19, Sadichha is still coming to terms with a lot of changes in her life. From being a celebrity overnight to still maintaining her balance as a teenager, she says she sometimes does wish if she was a little too young to be amidst the spotlight.
“ Before I used to think that maybe Miss Nepals never did anything that’s why they used to get criticized. Now that I am one, I know how difficult it is to do things on your own and at such a young age”. Malvika- So how has 7 months been so far? Sadichha- The first few months was very hectic. Everyone used to come at the same time for interviews, photo shoots, but then it started to slow down a bit. If you are wanted in ten places in day one, it becomes less as days pass by. I am also focused on the social activities with WWF and Cancer Relief Society. I am studying at St. Xaviers for my BBS. One day I get a holiday, and well that’s the day most events happen and I have to show my presence. I have no personal life at times. M- What’s the most number of interviews you have done in a day? S- It was the next day after being crowned. I remember it was from 7 in the morning to 7 in the evening. I was out the whole day giving interviews at 7-8 different places, to all the channels. M- I remember the night after my crowning, I couldn’t sleep at all. How was it for you? S- I went home around 3 am after the coronation party. For a few hours after, I just sat on my bed and thought about all that had happened. By 7 am I had to leave for my interviews and face the day. And so I did not sleep at all too.
M- How have your parents been handling the fact that their precious daughter has become the talk of the town, so soon? S- They are very supportive. In fact, they were the ones who bought the forms; my Baba went and dropped it. But when everybody wants to know what you are doing, wants an interview, sit and talk with you, sometimes you do get irritated. My mother keeps me calm in such situations and advices me that it will not always be the same. Baba comes and picks me up and drops me whenever needed. I sit down and talk to them every day about what I have done and what I did not like. And just share my problems. M- You are 19 at the moment. This is the time when I am sure you want to have fun with your friends, go shopping and do the normal things that all teenagers do. How difficult it is for you being that and a celebrity at the same time? S- It is difficult at times. A 19 year old would like, buy the best outfits, match with all her friends, and go out for coffee or clubbing. For me, I need to attend events, seminars, programs. I have to think who all are going to be there, be careful with what I wear and what I am going to speak with them. Thank god, most of my friends are not here. Otherwise they would have killed me that I don’t have time for them at all.
Her first modeling assignment was in class 6. She has worked for Mayos, Ncell, Fem before Miss Nepal happened. “I realize now I never asked questions. I remember during the shoot of Fem, we were there in the location from 10 am. Nisha di (actor) turned up at 3.For the whole 6 hours we had nothing to do. Once we started shooting I realized that I am the one who uses Fem and transforms into a beauty. It was funny as I had no idea”. BAISHAKH 2 0 6 8 • N Av yaata 9
M- Do you at anytime think that maybe you were too young to contest? That maybe you should have done it later? S- Maybe if I was in mid 20’s, I would have been busy with something else and Miss Nepal wouldn’t have been important for me. But I do wish at times, that I was a little more mature, had some more time for my family and friends. Few more extra years and Miss Nepal would have been nice, but I don’t have a lot of complaints so it’s all good. M- Who were you close to during the training? S- Sanyukta, Samriddhi, Sahana. I was contestant No. 1 and No. 2 was Varsha di, so I was close to her too. Sanyukta studies in the same college with me, so I meet her every day. M- Were all the contestants nice to you after you won Miss Nepal? S- We have not been able to sit down and talk after the crowning. We did have a party at J Bar. We took pictures had fun and talked about the pageant. I have met Samriddhi, Sahana afterwards. But we never talked about the aftermath of it, just basic girly stuffs. They are all nice to me. I was the youngest in the pageant, so they all treated me nice. M- So no catfights, back biting? Maybe they never considered you a threat, as you are too naïve and sweet? S- Maybe yeah (laughs). In front of me everyone’s been nice, I haven’t heard anything. And I hope I don’t hear anything. M- So what social activities have you been involved in since being Miss Nepal? S- I am the Conservation Ambassador for WWF. I went to Bardia for a 3 day program where I declared villages as a home stay program for Tourism Year. The whole Tharu Village is now home stay where people can come and live and experience the traditional culture. For Tourism Year, I went out for promotion campaigns as well. Usually we don’t see Middle East tourists coming to Nepal. With Nepal Tourism Board , I went to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and did campaigns to promote Nepal. With Cancer Relief Society, I have interacted with young people and done programs with them. M- In the next 3 months there will be another Miss Nepal. Why haven’t you, Sahana or Sanyukta taken any initiative in doing things on your own? Every year the media criticizes us saying we haven’t done anything? S- Before I used to think that maybe Miss Nepals never did anything that’s why they used to get criticized. Now that I am one, I know how difficult it is to do things on your own and at such a young age. Even if 3 of us decide to do things, it is very difficult for us to make that happen. We are thinking of going back to the organizations for Bal Mandir and Maiti Nepal who we visited during the contest and doing some fund raisers for them. I have all these ideas but just not sure how it will materialize. 10 N Av yaata •BAISHAKH 2 0 6 8
“According to the girls, it was decided before that Miss USA was going to win and so she had a different make up on. Surprisingly if you look at the final picture, it was the Diamond anniversary, the color is white and silver. The gown Miss World is wearing is white and silver”! M- Do you feel it is because you don’t know how to go about it; you don’t have the push or the support? S- Sometimes I think the agenda for Miss Nepal is crowning them and nothing after that. I was thrilled when I met all the contestants of Miss World. Throughout the year they are involved in various social activities. For us, it’s about tagging, labeling, and nothing after that. I have various ideas but not the right direction of how to do it. I guess with time, things will fall into places. But I still think I don’t need to tell the whole world I am doing this or that. Personally, we have always gone to Briddha Ashrams and given food and stuffs on occasions. Even in Bal Mandir, there was a program regarding Down Syndrome. I wanted to give something to the kids. The disappointing thing was that, the day when Miss Nepals come for the orientation, there are 10-15 of the staffs. When I went there later, there was no one. There were just a few people, the receptionist got flustered when I wanted to give the things. She just asked me to write down name and number. I still don’t know if it has even reached the children or not. M- So how was the Miss World experience? S- Initially it took some time getting used to. Everyone was there to have fun. My group consisted of the Asian lot; Macau , Mangolia, Korea. There was no competition amongst us. But after Alexandra (Miss USA) was crowned Miss World, bits and pieces started unraveling. M- What do you mean? S- During the grand rehearsal, I, Namibia and USA, the three of us were talking backstage. They were showing all the previous Miss Worlds having the classic expressions on their face when they won. We were then making fun that none of us would do that. Before the final night we were told to have full on makeup, dark eye shadows. Throughout one month we all did our own makeup and hair. On the night, Alexandra’s make up was quit pale, she had curls one moment, the next she did not. We were all talking about why hers was that way. After the crowning, we were all in the bus. All at once the girls started talking from left right and centre. There I was with no idea about what was going on. According to the girls, it was decided before that Miss USA was going to win and so she had a different make up on. Surprisingly if you look at the final picture, it was the Diamond anniversary, the color is white and silver. The gown Miss World is wearing is white and silver! “Comparatively Miss Nepal is much fairer than the Miss World pageant. There are 120 contestants; the judges don’t even ask us one question”. brought in by us. So it was too weird that it matched. M- So it was fixed before that Miss USA was the winner? S- Well that was what everyone seemed to talk about, as there were strange link ups to the crowning. M- Any other dislikes that you have with Miss World pageant? S- This time around the Best Dress and Best Model was selected at the same time. It was difficult because for the Best Dress, most of us had full on heavy dresses, some were traditional. First of all it’s difficult to walk in them, and they pitched in the Best Model round along with it. For Best Dress, it’s basically about the dress and not the walk so it was confusing for the girls. Miss Norway was selected as the Best Model, and she had a very simple dress on. When you think about the concept here about gowns for international pageants, it has to be beautiful and heavy. We had to wear the Best Dress for the final, and so many had to change their attire as it had to be from the same designer and all that. M- Any experience during the final event? S- Miss Nepal is live, but in Miss World, we had the diamond dance recorded a day before and shown on tv, while we were doing other things on stage that night. We were taught that once crowned, the remaining girls have to go to the winner and kiss her and congratulate them. After the crowning, even though the live was off, the audiences in the hall were still there. We were all on stage. Just then the girls who disagreed with the decision starting shouting “Venezuela”. Julia Morley seemed pissed off with it. It was funny coz when asked why the girls shouted Venezuela, they said they never liked Miss USA. M- After your experience, do you think Miss World is a fair pageant? S- At times I did think it was not fair. Comparatively Miss Nepal is much fairer than the Miss World pageant. There are 120 contestants; the judges don’t even ask us one question. There is no one on one with the judges. It makes you think why not me then? It’s not even about the lack of height or anything like that. Miss Wales is a fabulous singer but she was very short. She was kept in the limelight as she was also an opera singer and her teacher was the official musician for Miss World, so she was always on the front. At times we had to worry if we were even going to be visible on screen. We were told that there was 4 seconds on the tv for our introduction. M- What do you want to do in the future? S- If the offer is right get into television as I love the camera. But I would be choosy about the programs I would do. Finish my graduation which is very important for me at the moment. I would also like to have my own business firm.
Advice for girls who want to be a part of Miss Nepal. - Never keep yourself as a second option. Be confident. - Be yourself. - Be witty with your answers. - Be mentally and physically fit. - Be knowledgeable - Be Positive. 12 N Av yaata •BAISHAKH 2 0 6 8

ne of Eelum’s major discoveries was his love and passion for Theater. The first time he performed on stage was in grade two. He directed ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’. “The feeling of being up there and performing in front of audiences was different, it felt great” says Eelum. Inspired by theater since his early days, Eelum studied at “Rato Bangala School’ until his ‘A levels’. Because he was sure that Theater was where he belonged, Eelum went to ‘Sara Lawrence College’ in New York for his under graduation degree. “When it comes to theater it’s not only education that counts. Other than that, I have worked with Shakespeare’s on The Sound, The West Board Country Play House and I went to London BADA (British Association and Drama Academy) for a year” said Eelum. After having studied the art, and having worked with some of the leading studios abroad, Eelum returned to Nepal. Despite the fact that theater was not considered an intelligent option as a career in Nepal he stuck strong with his decision and never questioned it. Eelum, very positive in changing how Theater is supposed here, started a company called ‘Nepal Shakes’. Under this company he put up a production of ‘Othello’, directed a version of ‘Vagina Monologues’ called ‘Words from Prison’ and under the same company he also did ’Exit the King’. All of his plays were immensely appreciated and in many ways he helped develop the Theater industry in Nepal. As Eelum continued his exploration of character and emotions in theater, with time he also wanted to give it a new direction and look at things from a new dimension. So, he decided not to work with ‘Nepal Shakes’ for some time and started doing Films. At present he has been associated with two big projects ‘Hamro Team’ and ‘Highway’. With Hamro Team, all set to be showcased and only one scene left for the shooting of Highway, Eelum decided to go back to theaters, not because he didn’t like the experience or enjoyed working for films but because he felt theater was where he belonged. He is now working at Studio 7 with Sabin Layman, whom he respects and looks up to. As an actor /director he has been working and figuring out the industry in terms of Film and Theater, “and the figuring out will continue” says he.
..So, as an actor and director I feel it’s my responsibility to show them how vast the theater world is.. Having brought hopes and having raised the level of Theater in Nepal, Eelum is absolutely confident of slugging it out with the competition. Far more convinced about where he wants to be now, he sends out vibes that screams out it’s all about WINNING AND WANTING TO CHANGE. With so much already achieved at the age of 25, it is clear that Eelum Dixit had made it as “The Next Big Thing” and what better ways to stage it, then Navyaata?
My Work is my Hobby When I first started acting it started as a hobby and now that I have studied it, acting has become my work. I have the most fun while I am working and I am the most serious while I am working. I used to be a big party animal but these days that has gone down, I have started to stop it at 10 or 11. Weekdays and weekends I am either working or studying about something I am working on or writing about something I am working on or thinking about something I will be working on.
There is a relationship between an actor and the stage, to which I feel audiences play a very important role. With numerous eyes and expectations chronicling you and your character, I have always believed in making an effort. And because of the hard work and efforts we put in, the applauses and feedbacks we get are overwhelming and that motivates us to work harder. Also, the crowds we get are very mixed. There are lots of young people who are hungry for nice and up to mark English Theater, and there are the older generation who remember these from their college days. Because there hasn’t been a big English Theater Culture in Nepal, it feels great to have started Nepal Shakes. Also, because our tickets sell out pretty well I am happy to have been able to put up shows that satisfy the audiences.
For me as an actor it’s always about delving into the character When I think of a character I put myself into it. To me acting is to really be able to embody a character physically, mentally and emotionally and to be in the moment with the character. But I see this lacking in Nepal and this is one reason that has been holding back the film and theater industry in Nepal. There are a few exceptions, like some of the actors I respect from Gurukul, Studio 7 and Anup Baral’s studio who are immensely talented and they make sure that they get to the depth of the character.
I put up a version of Othello a year ago. And from that cast 5 or 6 people are active in theater where ever they are. I see lots of kids at the present time going to theater and coming out inspired. Lots of people I know who are 18 or 19 are looking towards college and saying, “Ok I will get a degree in business or whatever but minor in theater or I will major in theater and if my parents put up a fuss I will minor some other subjects as well” So, as an actor and director I feel it’s my responsibility to show them how vast the theater world is and how much it can give you and how deep it can take you. Especially at this point in Nepal, when Film and Theater industry is slowly rising, I would say our work should be so captivating and appealing that we inspire others.
Who do you want us to feature on our next issue as ‘Next Big Thing’? If you have someone in mind then, sms Navya space NBT space name and send it to 5001.
As a career you have to make your own way here and be very careful Especially with youths. They might tend to look at things a little short term. Everyone should be aware that the first film role you do, is very important in shaping the way you are seen by the public. Just make sure that you know what you are trying to say by portraying a character, you know how you are trying to be by portraying a character and how you want to go about portraying a character. One should always work hard and do justice to the role and raise the level of Nepali Film Industry rather than being just another person.

RECOMMENDED Ayurvedic Products For The Season
Sandalwood God’s Favorite
Herb
Owing to its magnificent scent, sandalwood has mostly been used for making perfumes all over the world. However, according to Ayurveda, sandalwood is one of the best herbs for cosmetics and skin care purposes. Also called chandan or srikhanda in Sanskrit, it is regarded as one of the most sacred and highly medicinal herbs in Ayurveda- sandalwood has been unofficially called ‘god’s favorite herb’ since time immemorial. Its use has been described in the ancient Ayurveda text Charak Samhita, which categorizes sandalwood as a herb with complexion- improving properties. The anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory and anti-aging properties of sandalwood are valuable for skin care routines. The cooling and soothing properties of sandalwood are good for treating acne, rashes and sunburns-it is an excellent herb with sunscreen property. The antimicrobial property helps kill germs, clear blemishes and cure various skin ailments such as acne, eczema, and rashes. Daily use of sandalwood as a cleanser and mask helps achieve clear and glowing skin. Like any other product, one has to be careful to use pure and not use adulterated sandalwood. Mysore sandalwood (Mysore, Karnataka, India) is considered the best amongst sandalwood found in various places around the world Uses: The aromatic description of sandalwood is “rich, sweet, woody, floral and delicately fragrant.” Coupled with its highly medicinal qualities, it is used for multitude of beauty purposes, mostly in powders and essential oils. Note that neither sandalwood powder nor sandalwood essential oil is supposed to be taken internally.

Sandalwood essential oil:
Sandalwood powder:
Steam and Inhalation: Dilute pure sandalwood essential oil in a bowl of hot water and use as steam. This treats dry and sensitive skin, eases depression by reducing stress and improving sleep. Inhale deeply- it provides an excellent aromatherapy after a stressful day.
For inflamed skin: 1 tbsp of sandalwood with a pinch of turmeric and a tsp of cold milk. Mix, make paste and apply as mask and keep until dry. This paste cools and hydrates the skin.
Bathing: Add few drops of sandalwood oil (it can also be mixed with other essential oils such as lavender or rose) to a hot bath. The fragrance lifts the spirit and helps ease the senses. Homemade facial spray: Add two drops of sandalwood oil to half a pinch of camphor in a glass of distilled water, mix properly and put in a spray bottle. This acts as a very good mist. Keep spraying every time your skin feels dehydrated. Home spray: Add few drops of sandalwood essential oil to distilled water and one ounce of alcohol (to emulsify the oil). Use as room spray and linen spray (sprays for bed sheets and towels.) If spray bottles are hard to find, leave it in a room or around the house in a bottle or a small containerit is an excellent natural deodorizer and disinfectant.
For Anti-aging: astringent property of the herb helps tighten the skin. Sandalwood with honey acts as anti-aging mask. Scrub or exfoliater: mixture of sandalwood and red deal powder with a little bit of water is a good daily scrubber for face and body. Cleansing: Sandalwood soap is also a good cleanser. Just get natural sandalwood soaps for your face. Furthermore, moisturizer that contains sandalwood as main ingredient is an excellent way to nourish, hydrate and cool your skin.

he sound of the guitar, golden against a lazy warm afternoon, loving notes fluidly escaping from swift fingers, a tune entwined with a fragrant memory – so precise and concise ; compressed within a song. If only it was as simple as this, he thinks. Beauty plucked from nothingness. He smiles. How fortunate to be given this gift. He smiles again – wryly – But how unfortunate that it is me. He rests his cheap wooden guitar against the wall and gets up. His mother, who is preparing the afternoon tea, pauses as the abrupt sound of the traffic takes over from the resonance of her son’s guitar. He is only 19, she thinks and he has to take up the responsibility of looking after us. She sighs softly as she stirs the sugar into the tea and calls out –‘Have you finished packing, yet? Here’s your Ticket, Thai Airways. Your Uncle will pick you up from the airport. If you had a Father, you wouldn’t have to go abroad ...Brunei is full of Nepalis, don’t worry.” He bangs his head in silence. Headphones barricade the sound of noisy birds in his parent’s expansive garden. You tube shows more than 300,000 hits for this Sepultura track. Immersed in the turmoil of darkness he reaches out for his brand new Ibanez and hits out at the chords at percussive intervals. He is barely 18 and he has fallen in love with the dark world of death metal. His cell phone vibrates. He puts the guitar into its velvet casing and clicks the brand new leather case shut, the smell of newness and leather mingling pleasantly. He hits the pause button and answers the phone. Yes, he says, the practice room is all set. Call everyone; we have to kick ass at our first underground gig. His mother appears at his doorway. “Babu, your guitar teacher is here!” “Mom, would you please tell him that he doesn’t need to come any more? I’ve already learnt what I had to and I can download guitar lessons from You tube anyway.” His mother protests but he has made up his mind. His guitar teacher is a weary 56-year-old musician who knows what the rock n roll way of life can do to a man in Nepal...especially a man who follows his passions. He simply asks for his money and walks off, wondering what the kid was going to play with the knowledge of 20 odd chords and the blues progression.
His Uncle is very kind. He shows him the ropes of his straightforward job of a security man at the mall. Work can be desolately hopeless. Staring at the vigilance images, walking around the mall and talking to his colleagues, there is a sense of perpetual invasion lynching at his soul. He sends more than half his pay packet to his mother and for his sister’s education. They say that they are saving up to buy some land. He is left with his rent and daily expenses. He lives frugally. He is saving to buy a state of the art Stratocaster and a Fender amp. He listens to music in all his free time and practices his guitar chops. He learns to read music with the help of a retired British major, a music enthusiast. He writes songs and he marvels at the delicacy of a tune that surfaces from the depths of his loneliness. Knowing only 20 chords can be a limitation. He makes his drummer play louder...they bang their heads and make a lot of noise. All of them have long hair and brooding looks. They invent their pain and angst, they laugh within themselves that creating pain is also an art. They curse all the other musicians in Nepal. That one can’t sing to save his life, that one’s guitar tone sucks and that band is not tight enough. Inside his head, he knows. He knows he should have taken those guitar lessons more seriously. He knows that his arrogance comes from his ignorance. One morning, he heads to the barber and chops his long hair off. He stops taking calls from his band members and switches off his phone. He buys a hollow guitar and calls up the guitar teacher. “Hey, it’s been two years kid. I’ve stopped giving guitar lessons; I have a studio now.” “Mom it’s been two years now. Can I take a break? I just can’t do this job any more. I guess we have enough money to start something don’t we?” He is back home now, with his beautiful Stratocaster and fender amp. Songs bear down on him, thrusting at him to set them free. He puts up an ad in the paper. Guitar lessons with theory of music. “Hey, is this Mr. Anmol Rai? I am calling about the guitar lessons, I used to be in an underground band and I want to learn more!” It’s a young voice. “My name is Deepin. When can we start?” “Call me Anmol and we can start, right away!”

HAMRO TEAM
und… Common Gro A te a re C s t’ Le getherness o T r fo r e th e g Let’s Play To Many a times people strive for moving ahead, getting at the pinnacle. Life infact is like a race where everytime you race with someone this way or the other. What happens most of the time is that you are not always on your own. Rather you find yourself in a group as a part of it. That is the most important role you are to play than the one where you are by yourself. You being one of the members of the group where things depend on you along with other members, individuality shall never work. Look up for the team, team spirit and team work and go together as one. Yes! That’s how it is required to be. If looked upon, people are still striving for one’s self. Though they work in a group, things seem no different to them. May be such case is ubiquitous that a peace-building project SFCG(Search For Common Ground) was formed with a mission to eliminate conflicts and bring people together despite their differences. Till date it has been in around 13 different nations. For achieving its goal it started a Television series named The Team in a form of play that looked more infotainment. This series localized the scenario wherever it went to. “The Team aims to be true to the daily life of the population. It is entertaining and humorous, whilst communicating a message of reconciliation.” The BBC And now SFCG is in Nepal since 2005/2006 with the same motive to help people realize the importance of working as one. SFCG is complete with its series out here with a local name “Hamro Team”. Collaborating with local writers, Hamro Team revolves around the local context of Nepal presented through a story of football background. And as every story has a theme in it, these series are to emphasize on team spirit, leadership, good governance and transparency. It is a total 13 series play that has been picturized by SFCG in coordination with 32 N Av yaata •BAISHAKH 2 0 6 8
“’The Team’ aims to be true to the daily life of the population. It is entertaining and humorous, whilst communicating a message of reconciliation.” - The BBC AB pictures Pvt.Ltd. Yubakar Rajkarnikar, one of the producers of the Hamro team says, “The basic objective behind this series is to bring people of every field together. People of today disperse from their partners once they succeed. It is possible to achieve goals working together and that’s easier showing in a football team”. The origin of these series with the football background shall project the possibility of leadership within one game as in football: one doesn’t need to be at the top, wherever you are you can play leadership. And Hamro Team is produced with both negative and unique aspects of Nepal. To make it more commercial, more entertaining, and informative, it is presented as a play with romance, action and other aspects of a commercial play. ‘Overall, it is all and all a commercial series- messages are embedded in a subtle way. It’s a story of a football team’, said Mr. Rajkarnikar. Abhinash Bikram Shah, one of the
script writer of this series, says he has incorporated the script in Nepali context. “In general, this series is about team and the complexity involved in building the finest team. The best way to portray the team spirit is through sports. Football has a universal appeal and in Nepali context every individual has a strong impact on them. There is a dialogue on an episode that will convey the zest of the series “For me football team is like a country, it has a coach, a manager, players from different backgrounds and ethnicity, and all of them unite together from We’s to I’s for a common goal to achieve against complex football defenses, or the problems of the country”. And that’s what lacks in Nepal. So, I have incorporated the stories of common people, how they are affected directly or indirectly by the poor socio-economic and political state of Nepal. It also forces the characters in the script to question the leadership of the politicians and the voice out their opinions on what kind of leadership they want and all of it through a football team. Furthermore the characters are ‘from the people I meet, from the books or article I read; from the films and documentaries I see. I am a good observer, good listener and serious reader; I always keep my eyes and ears open; always struggling and exploring”.

EDITOR’S PICK- MOVIE Our new editor Malvika Subba recommends her favourite romantic movie.
10 Things I Hate About You A film inspired by the classic Shakespeare play “The Taming of the Shrew”, set in a modern day high school. 10 Things I Hate About You starts off with Cameron (Joseph Gordon- Levitt), new student at Padua High, sitting in the office of the quirky guidance counselor Ms. Perky. He is then shown around the school by Michael (David Crumholtz), who will become his best friend. During his tour Cameron first sees Bianca Stratford (Larisa Oleynik), a beautiful sophomore with one problem: she isn’t allowed to date. And neither is her “shrew” sister, Katarina(Julia Stiles), a senior who loves indie rock and feminist prose and hates conformity. But Kat and Bianca’s father alter’s his house rule: now, Bianca can date... as long as Kat has a date, too. In order for Cameron to date Bianca, he has to find someone to date Kat. So Michael helps him enlist the help of pretty-boy/jerk/model Joey Donner (Andrew Keegan), tricking him into thinking that *he* will get to take Bianca out if he pays someone to take out Kat. His choice: Patrick Verona(Heath Ledger). I fell in love with 10 Things I Hate About You as soon as Kat Stratford started speaking. Her role as a rebellious, witty, smart mouth teenager blew me away. The chemistry between Patrick and Kat sparkles every time they meet. Who can forget the pole song by Patrick when he belts out “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You” during football practice to impress Kat? Every girl must have fantasized about being wooed like that, and I am no exception. The Shakespearean twist in the movie also adds a refreshing flavor, even though cheesy. 10 Things I Hate About You also has my all time favorite romantic scene to date. From the time when Kat helps Patrick flee out of detention to the time they play paint ball and end it with a kiss. Not to be labeled a chick flick, watch this movie, if you haven’t yet and ride into the crazy witty world of 10 Things I Hate About You.
Kat’s poem that I love: I hate the way you talk to me And the way you cut your hair. I hate the way you drive my car. I hate it when you stare. I hate your big dumb combat boots And the way you read my mind. I hate you so much it makes me sick. It even makes me rhyme. I hate the way you’re always right. I hate it when you lie. I hate it when you make me laugh; Even worse when you make me cry. I hate it when you’re not around And the fact that you didn’t call, But mostly I hate the way I don’t hate you; Not even close; Not even a little bit; Not even at all.
DID YOU KNOW? The title “10 Things I Hate About You” sounds remotely like “Taming Of The Shrew” (on which this film is based). Julia Stiles originally auditioned for the role of Bianca Stratford. The marching band in the sequence where Heath Ledger sings to Julia Stiles was not from Stadium High School, where the film was shot. Stadium was approached by the makers of the movie to do the scene, but did not have a marching band. The makers of the movie then contacted Lincoln High School, a nearby Tacoma school, who furnished the marching band depicted in the scene. Several members of the Stadium Band assisted, but had to be taught how to march. The scene in which Kat reads the “10 Things” poem was the first and only take, according to the DVD extras. Kat’s tears towards the end of the poem were not planned. Heath Ledger beat out Josh Hartnett and Ashton kutcher for the role of Patrick.

The eyes that Listened
navyaata/My Story
L
ast year I was out shopping with my sister. We decided to go to Ason. With Mothers day around the corner, the place was crowded. We were just passing by Annapurna Temple when I caught a crowd of people around a bag seller. I thought it was simply a gathering of people to buy bags. As I was walking through, I heard a cry. I wasn’t sure where it came from until I noticed it was from the same crowd I had seen before. Curiosity got the better of me and I went to know what was happening. But the crowd made it difficult for me. I realized that someone was being beaten. Just then I saw the face of the woman who was being abused. I was shocked when I realized that it was my Professor from college! It just couldn’t be. I stood there not knowing how to react. As I gathered my senses I pushed the people with as much force as I could, to get to the centre. I asked them to stop though I felt I was too late. My professor’s clothes were all ripped off and on the floor. What was only left was her shawl which I then wrapped around her body. Even her ornaments were somewhere on the ground as her neck and ears were bleeding. I begged everyone and asked them the reason behind the beatings. My professor was being accused of trying to steal a bag that costs only few bucks. Angry, I shouted at them as to from what point she looked like a thief. My professor is so well dressed all the time: simplicity with a touch of beauty. How could they not see this and physically abused her? What made me more furious was when I saw two policemen who were also involved in that dirty amiss. They just stood there and watched. I felt so disgusted as I was alone voicing out for my professor, even as people lowered their faces and started to scatter. The shopkeeper, who was a woman, led into such an incident. I gave her a look and all she could do was stay quite and start selling her bags. But what was done was done. In all the misunderstanding and wrong doing of the shopkeeper was my innocent professor who was all torn out and left stupefied. My eyes swelled up were in tears and my throat dried up. My sister and I bought clothes for her and took her to her house. Later that night I couldn’t sleep. All night I kept thinking about her and cursed as to why bad things happen to good people. She was beaten publicly and no one dared to stop it. Rather, the bag seemed only a tool and she was the scapegoat for evil minds to enjoy the scene. The next morning I went to meet her. I returned heavy hearted as she was still unconscious and I couldn’t see an ever charming woman in that condition. Is self respect that cheap, that for a bag people can go that far?? Now and then I always get stuck with that incident and live that moment like a nightmare.

How would I forget that Friday! After having a hectic day at work, I really needed to be at a bar. At around 6, I called up my friends to know what was happening and I was invited to Tamas. I reached Tamas at 8 and by the time I was there, the party had already started. There were a few known faces but most of them were friends of friends whom I was meeting for the first time. After a few handshakes I joined the crowd and started with a chilled beer. I remember this girl who was wearing black skirt. (I won’t tell her name). She looked really pretty. Later we kissed and that’s all I can remember. Saturday afternoon my girlfriend called me up and broke up with me. Later I found out that the girl I had kissed was my girlfriend’s friend. I regret that Friday for being carried away for a while, which cost me my love.

Fridays are always fun but not when you are broke. That Friday was a week before my salary was due and I was almost broke. I had planned on staying over at my home and go nowhere. Later few of my friends came over to my place and took me to a restaurant which they said belonged to their friends. We hung around and had fun. I didn’t care about the money as my friends knew that place. But when the bill was handed over, it shocked me: Rs. 7000 only on my part!!!!!

CONFESSIONS!!!
It was my friend’s farewell treat. Few days after, Karma, a very close friend of mine was leaving for states, so there was a big gathering in Jatra, Thamel. There were friends from school, college and friends of friends. I started the evening with hot rum punch and slowly as the conversation got deeper my drinks got higher. I was waiting for a taxi near Java. I remember being tired and had to sit for a while. As I sat next to Nabil bank’s ATM, my body gave up and I lay down on the street. The idea was to lie down for 10-15 minutes and then head home. Next thing I know, a police man was kicking me, horns were honking and people were staring. Damn man! I had slept on the street all night. When I woke up I was next to a beggar in the pavement. I took a taxi, rushed to the bathroom and showered for almost an hour. That Friday night was awful and since then I make sure I never get that drunk and end up that bad.

Imagine waking up Saturday morning and realizing that you lost the 150 pound your sister sent to you. Yes I know it’s heartbreaking. So, that Friday started really good. I went to Western Union to collect 150 pounds. Thereafter I went to my friends place and played PSP for a while. At around 8, I crashed into a friend’s house party. Drank some vodka and after a while few of us made a plan and went clubbing in Insomnia. Because I was already a little tipsy I forgot I had the money in my bag. I left the blue converse bag at the corner and went in. The party was fun with dance, drinks and we went back home at around 1am. I was wasted and completely forgot that I had left my bag in the counter. Next morning when I woke up, the first thing that came to my mind was the money. I quickly rushed to Durbarmarg and looked for my bag. On the way I kept questioning where my money would be. I was angry at myself for being so careless. I reached the party place and got my bag but the 150 pounds was nowhere to be found.

Trends That Matter: Spring Summer 2011 Women By Akash Rajbhandari
Freshen up your spring look without having to break the bank. Go Loud
If there’s any season to go loud with prints, it’s now! This season’s runways were full of them and they certainly weren’t made for the fashion wallflower. While you may want to play it safe with one printed piece per ensemble, show you’re up-to-date with the trends by piling on the graphics or wear a matching printed outfit. If you’re on the plus size go for smaller prints, as bigger graphics will only accentuate your size.

Prim & Proper
It is said that the more flailing the economy, the longer the skirt. Since the economic crisis of 2008, the fashion realm has seen hemlines drop faster than the Dow Jones index, so there just may be some truth to that theory. Whatever the case, designers in 2011 are loving the return of the below-theknee hem with Fendi, Miu Miu, Louis Vuitton and Yves Saint Laurent leading the pack. Make sure you invest in a midi length skirt in a soft flowy fabric this season and combine it with different trends like ruffles or prints to keep your look from appearing too dull.
Long & Sheer
Yes, the 70’s are back but in a more luxe and streamlined way. This trend is especially flattering for those with long legs but don’t worry even if you don’t have them for when there’s a will, there’s a way! It’s the high-waists that will thankfully lengthen your pins so make sure you dig out for those wide-legged trousers. Update the look by teaming the trousers with platform wedges as they will aid you look even taller.
Spring/Summer 2011
Women Spin The Color Wheel
Spring collections are always about the colors. So, here’s the perfect chance to wear that bright fuchsia top you’ve always wanted to flaunt. A glance at the catwalks reveal that it’s preferable to wear blue, purple, green and orange, all at the same time. Worried you won’t be able to pull it off? Wear with one main color and accent your look with contrasting accessories.
Paint It White
It’s A Jungle Out There
There were monkeys at Prada, pythons at Burberry Prorsum and a panda and giraffe at Louis Vuitton. While it sounds like a trip to the zoo, the reality for this spring season is something slightly more untamed. Designers went feral with animal prints, in leopard and snake, proving it’s time to escape the jungle. Make sure you indulge in the jungle fever for, be it elaborate dresses or chic handbags, this trend’s left none.
You really can’t find any fault with a crisp white shirt. Just make sure it fits you flawlessly. If in doubt, get one tailored as it isn’t gonna cost you a fortune. Classically, the white shirt looks its preppy best with a pair of indigo denims. But if you wanna play different, go the 70’s style by tucking a slim fit white shirt into a pair of wide legged trousers or rock the androgynous look by pairing the shirt with a boyfriend jacket and some comfy pants.

The
making
of
Navyaata
experience the real thing - Himal Karmacharya Navyaata completes one year of journey. The magazine has been borne of passion and countless hours of hard work from our team, partners and well wishers. There were many detractors, many doubters and naysayers, but we have prevailed. In the past year, our team has made an honest attempt at redefining magazine for the youth. Sassy, attitude and outspoken – we are that and more. It takes a unique talent to write what you see so that the reader will see. Our inroads to our readers, based on the emails and Facebook queries we receive suggests that we are somewhat successful in what Winston Churchill once said: write as you think and the reader will understand. We feature the latest trends and information on fashion and beauty, introduce new personalities and make some casual banter about youth life in Nepal. Our outlook is modern, but quintessentially Nepali. Here we bring you the story of Navyaata and the 12 moments that defined the magazine in its first year. We take a look back the memory lanes to celebrate the coming of age of Navyaata.
01. A magazine is born How many people does it take to make a magazine? Apparently quite a lot. We had no idea how hard it is to create a magazine. All we knew was we wanted to create a magazine we could be proud of. Sometimes it is good to be oblivious. Only then can you be foolhardy to try something utterly crazy and that’s exactly what we did. Our concept for the magazine evolved over many informal lunch meetings at Tukche and Helena’s. What we could not or did not decide upon, we left for later. Instead of worrying about all the “what ifs” and “thens”, we just forged ahead and started the magazine.
02. Humble beginnings Navyaata started its operations in a Pulchowk building from a one-room office which was sublet from a software company and even by our Spartan ideals, it was a barebones operations. Our goal was to focus on getting the best content to our readers by having a lean operation. Not having a generator, we worked around the load-shedding whims of NEA. That meant office hours were flexible and often subject to change from one week to another. Perhaps the humble beginning was conducive of a sense of belonging, our 48 N Av yaata •BAISHAKH 2 0 6 8
team felt very close to the magazine and our mission of doing something different. That feeling persists even today, even though we have grown to a much larger team, a bigger office and definitely stepped out of the shadow to a world of recognition.
03. First issue Getting the first issue out of the door was quite a riot. It took us much much longer than our subsequent issues. Honestly, we did not know where or how to start. Proof-reading, CTP plates, photo touches, spell checks… the haphazardness of these activities made for a quite hectic last few days – made all the more challenging by the fact that some of the key individuals had to be out of the country during the last few weeks. Our first cover girl was the gorgeous Ayusha Karki. Her pictures were truly breathtaking and made for a nice introduction to our magazine in the market. Our team did a fantastic job on the concepts and the shoot, so much so that the cover page of the 1st edition received the best cover accolade from many of our readers.
As one reader succinctly put it: “Nepal ma pani yesto magazine niklado rahechha.”
04. Launch party Navyaata’s launch party was held in Malla Hotel on Baisakh 1, 2067. We launched our magazine with the Nepali New Year to capture the merriment and excitement of a new year. Our party captured the essence of our magazine. Unlike the usual staid affair of a formal uptight ceremony, we opted for a hip and fun party with loud music and good food to match. And the attendees spanned the
cross section of Kathmandu society – celebrities, reporters and socialites. After a very brief presentation on our magazine, we invited everyone for dinner and opened the dance floor for all to have fun.
05. 11K FB fans Our Facebook page was born on March 27, 2010. And we crossed our first milestone of 10,000+ fans by the end of last year. Some day we hope to cross 100000+ fans but we are already the largest Facebook community for any Nepali magazine. We connect regularly with our fans and readers through our page. Many of the comments are flattering, some are critical. However, all of them help us become better and improve ourselves. In some cases, we have even polled our readers for our content a la the best players in Nepal for basketball. Now if you have not already liked our page, go to www.facebook.com/ navyaata and click on the ‘like’ icon.
revamped our website with a standard content management system in keeping with our theme of constant evolution. Our readers will now see daily updates for blogs and photo journals from the streets of Kathmandu.
07. Make a Wish How do you marry philanthropy to a fashion magazine and not make it over the top? The ‘Make a Wish’ feature debuted in our June issue and it has been a regular staple in our magazine since then. We are not looking to create another foundation or an NGO. We set small goals. We spend a few hours with our wishes, eat a meal with them and fulfill their basic needs – all within a budget of around Rs. 10,000. Our protagonists are from the various places of Kathmandu. We find them as we walk the streets of Kathmandu and their needs are quite modest. One person wanted a medical checkup, another wanted a pressure cooker and mosquito net, yet another wanted Fitrite shoes. Our readers now regularly send in donations to expand this program.
06. navyaata.com Our website debuted in April 2010, close on the heels of our first issue. We received a total of 15,000+ hits in the very first month. Subsequent months have seen a gradual spike in the number of people visiting our site. The fact that our entire magazine is available online has helped the traffic to our site. We have people who regularly visit our website from faraway destinations like Qatar and Czech Republic. We have recently

09. Women’s Gathering March is the month of women’s day. We picked a few influential women to have lunch with. Our invitees were quite an impressive lot and we felt more accomplished just by being with them for a couple of hours. Our event was a little off the beaten track, nothing extravagant— no awards, no ceremonies—just a small gathering and luncheon. We wanted to celebrate Women’s Day by just giving our ladies a break from their busy schedules (for once) and they loved it. We hope to do more such events in our coming days.
10. The trendsetter Who said you can’t combine a boyfriend shirt with leggings? Or dress like a supermodel with things that you can buy in Kathmandu? Well yours truly takes a bow. We are dedicated to be the number one resource in Nepal for fashion and color trends, edgy opinions and lifestyle. We have introduced numerous columns in the last 12 months as our attempt towards this aim – Fashion Feature, How To, Seven Days, Hey It’s Fine, Navyaa Travels, Be Inspired. Count on us to tell our readers on what’s hot and what’s not. Don’t be surprised if we become the most “syndicated, stolen or appropriated” by other sites educating their readers on what’s hot.
08. Fashion Nite Out When it comes to having a good time, nobody quite does it like Navyaata. Navyaata’s fashion nite out, where standing out was normal, was held in 1905, the restaurant tucked in the heart of Kathmandu. The place was packed. It was arguably the largest crowd ever to fit into 1905. And when the models hit the ramp, swaying to the beats and flaunting the best in fashion and concept, the crowd went wild. The fashion show, beautifully emceed by Malvika Subba, really defined a fun Fashion Show. The party was held in partnership with Party Nepal and OMG, two of the premier event management companies in Nepal. The party was a big hit and unfortunately we had to turn away many people at the door as we were quickly sold out.

11. Venture Abroad Navyaata has always looked to connect with the overseas Nepali diaspora. From our very first issue, our circulations have reached the markets of Hong Kong, Bangkok and the US. Our approach of putting our entire magazine online also comes from our strategy to build a bigger diaspora following. Our team has travelled to Thailand, Hong Kong and the US on a publicity drive and interacted with people there to promote our magazine. It therefore came as no surprise when we received our first email from an overseas group called the Parchha Productions introducing their group and detailing their work in London. Look for us in the Association of Nepalese in America conference this year.
12. Anniversary Issue And thus we reach the one year mark. Our anniversary issue is a culmination of our hard work. It is in your hands for you to see.

52 N Av yaata •BAISHAKH 2 0 6 8
Sneh Rana, a name in the world of beauty, is an icon and the lady whom every eye admires. Adored for her beauty both inwardly and outwardly, she is lovely, charming, and straightforward and no wonder an amiable person.
What does beauty mean to you?
Beauty to me is not about makeup. It is about the woman. It is not about covering up. It is about bringing out what’s there.
How did you get into make-up business? After my children went to India to a boarding school, only did I pursue this profession.
Where did you get your Beauty course from? I did my makeup course from Mumbai.
What’s your favorite foundation?
My favorite foundation is a foundation I’m using by Bobbi Brown. It complements our Asian skin tone.
Your best lipstick?
I have a lot of favorites from all different brands like Mac, Florelle, loreal, and lakme and many more.
Your favorite nail colour?
My all time favorite is red colour. I like wearing all shades of red.
Your favorite nail polish?
O.P.I, florelle and lakme
Favorite cream?
Estee Lauder creams which I use otherwise I love Ponds cold cream.
Favorite make-up artist?
My guru CoryWalia and Marvie Beck in Mumbai.
Your Favorite shampoo?
Kerastase reflection: I get it from India.
Your beauty secret?
Thinking positive, making people laugh, smiling, giving and receiving love brings a glow and knocks the years off your face. I wake up every morning
looking forward to beginning each day as I believe that if you are happy from within, it reflects on your face.
One beauty inheritance you have got from your mother? Ageless skin I guess!
Where do you shop for your beauty products?
In US, and of course in India where you get everything now.
How do you keep your hair healthy and shiny? I always oil my hair, treat it with all different products and look after it.
Most beautiful person?
Late RajmataGayatri Devi of Jaipur: She was not only beautiful but did a lot for her people, especially the people of Rajasthan.
Who has the best skin in Nepal?
Nepal is blessed with beautiful skin. It depends on how one takes care of it and maintains it. My mother has amazing skin for her age.
What kind of make-up suits the Nepali skin? Nepalese people love wearing makeup, so all kinds suit them. They have great skin and always look good. But stay away from fake products that are in abundance in the market.
How would you define Beauty industry in Nepal?
Beauty comes with a package; face; figure; fitness; hair; grooming and personality. In Nepal people are very conscious and well groomed which I think is a wonderful thing. For example; look at our grandmothers; they still look so classy and groomed. Look at the traffic
police women. They have lipstick and kajal. Where in the world will you ever get to see that? So I think the beauty industry in Nepal has always been top notch and will remain so.
Suitable SPF sunscreen in Nepal?
A lot of products are in the market. See what suits your skin and buy the best. Sunscreen is a must for everyone.
The best spa in town?
There are so many of them: can’t decide as I’m not a spa person.
Any favorite personality you would like to put make-up on? All my clients are personalities in their own way and they are the ones I love applying makeup to, as they trust in my work and come to me.
Best compliment you have received so far?
‘You are a beautiful person from the inside too’.
Do you think you can do without make-up?
Yes, at home I’m never with makeup ever, but when I go out I like to put some on.
Home-remedies for beautiful skin?
With summer around the corner the best home remedy for glowing skin is to use seasonal fruits as facial masks as they are highly moisturizing. Papaya, which u get all season, is useful for blackheads and blotchy dull skin. Cucumber is cooling and improves a dull and greasy complexion. Watermelon juice applied to the face and neck freshens up the skin.
One tip on making skin glow?
Drink a lot of water to hydrate your skin and regular facials and skincare.
