Editor's Note

Dear Readers,

Editor Note

March is here and that means the arrival of spring. The middle of February brought us unprecedented amount of rainfall. While the rain put damper on quite a few plans (not to mention our shoot schedule), it did not lessen our excitement for Bryan Adams (the one day off the load shedding did not hurt either). Bryan Adams gave a sterling performance and now we know why he is as popular as he is. We were glad the snafu related to stadium dispute was resolved in time. We don’t want to hit the international headlines for all the wrong reasons again. We hope to see more concerts like this one in the future. March is the month of women’s day. We picked a few influential women to have lunch with. They have accomplished a lot in their fields and carry quite impressive resumes. Our reporters felt more accomplished just by being with them for a couple of hours. This issue we start a new feature called ‘Missed Connections’. Our readers have told us about how they often see someone interesting, but cannot quite bring themselves to approach him/her. Well worry not fellas. We provide a perfect space to let your feelings out. While we can’t promise that your feelings will be reciprocated, we know it will be read. Also, we start our version of the talent hunt with the ‘FACE OF NAVYAATA’ competition. You will get the chance to become the face of Navyaata and win a cash prize of Rs. 20,000 and a lot of goodies. So hurry up folks and send us your entry. You will find the entry form in this issue of the magazine. For all our readers who are sitting for the iron gate exams, good luck! Ace your exams and party hard afterwards. We share your excitements and your apprehensions. Few years back, we were in the same boat. This is our 12th issue. We promise our anniversary issue will be a special one. Wait for it. MARCH on folks. Himal Karmacharya hkarmacharya@navyaata.com

PUKAR MALLA

"Leading

Harvard"

Text by: Bhrikuti Rai Photos by: Usha Pun

I am a simple Nepali. I am deeply connected with my family. In the US, no one has asked me yet what my father’s name is, while that is almost the first question anyone will ask me in Nepal. Pukar Malla is many things at once. He is a youth leader who helms the mantle at Harvard University as the president of Harvard Graduate Council. He is the only Nepali who has ever been elected to the council. But that is not the only thing that is remarkable about Pukar. Pukar has been a student leader all throughout his life. He was the head boy at Budhanilkantha School. He attended St Xaviers School until his SLC exams, joined Budhanilkantha Schools for A Levels, completed his Bachelors from Swarthmore College, got a PhD from Cornell University and is currently enrolled in the prestigious Kennedy School of Government in Harvard University for his Masters in Public Administration. The alums of Kennedy School include the likes of Lee Kwan Yu and Ban Ki Moon. We look forward to Pukar’s many contributions to Nepal’s development efforts. Pukar finds his true calling in shaping the public policy of our country to spur innovation among youths and to foster youth leadership. He lives by the dictum that if you don’t do something about a problem you have no right to complain about it. That is why he has given up the security of a large paycheck and gone right into fighting the battles of a evolving nation from the grassroots.

People/ Pukar Malla

PUKAR MALLA

You are currently co-leading a global Nepali youth movement Nepal Ko Yuwa. Tell us more about it. The focus of Nepal Ko Yuwa is on building a bridge between Nepali youth abroad and Nepal. In doing so, we are organizing three major programs, Goreto, Chhaya and Paribartan. Goreto aims to instil in high-schoolers the values of the new SLC, Scholarship Leadership and Citizenship, by helping the students find the path that they yearn, while engaging them in community development. Chhaya allows Nepali youth abroad to shadow a successful Nepali professional in Nepal for a day and to share their learning with the abroad community. Paribartan is a yearly project where multiple youth-centric organizations help selected college students to design and implement youth innovation projects.

Pukar Malla

Questionnaire Family Members, Siblings, Parents’ occupation: I have two sisters. My father is a civil engineer and my mother is a home-maker.

What are your future aspirations? As a child I grew up understanding Nepal as Never End Peace And Love nation. My aspirations are to build an innovative venture to develop the next generation of change-agents in Nepal, who will aspire to exercise leadership in bringing peace and prosperity to our homeland.

I believe in ‘lead by action.’ I try to keep passion and persistence as my closest allies. I enjoy doing things differently. I savor simplicity and elegance. I find humility to be one of the most precious assets in anyone. I choose to hold a constant positive attitude, which sometimes gets me into trouble.

Education: School, High School, Undergrad, Grad School – St.Xavier’s School (SLC) and Budhanilkantha School (A-Levels) Undergraduate: Swarthmore College Graduate: Cornell (MS/PhD), Harvard

(Masters in Public Administration with focus on technology and development)

You’ve worked for many high-tech companies. Describe your experiences. I have worked at Intel, AMD, Silicon Graphics and a start-up company in Silicon Valley in the past. I mostly worked on architecture and system design of integrated circuits for mobile phones and laptops. At Intel, I got two patents. The start-up opportuity, where I worked as the Chief System Architect, helped me develop leadership capacity to bring engineering, marketing, and strategy teams together.

What are your research interests? My current research interests are in understanding innovative ways to transform the developing world in the social, political and economic realms. I tend to think that sustainable impact is based on a change in the mindset of the citizens towards innovation.

How would you describe yourself? I am a simple Nepali. I am deeply connected with my family. Nepal is a big part of who I am and what I do. I respect our culture but also believe that cultural evolution is central to our nation’s development.

Date/Place of Birth: May 23/Lalitpur, Nepal

What are you doing currently? (Occupation, Social service) Currently, I am a final-year student at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. I work part-time at the World Bank and am also co-leading Nepal Ko Yuwa, a global Nepali youth movement.

mission, focusing the desires voiced by the members into achievable goals, helping the HGC Executive Board achieve these goals and coordinating HGC contact with the administration, faculty and staff. In addition, the President serves on the Board of Directors of the Harvard Alumni Association.

You are the President of the Harvard Graduate Council. It is indeed a coveted position, but alongside you must have great responsibilities. Please stress on a few. Harvard has 13,600 students in 12 schools. The Harvard Graduate Council aims to facilitate a mechanism to resolve their issues and to foster a wonderful graduate student experience for all students. In doing so, we advocate on behalf of students issues, foster a collaborative environment for the students and improve social life of the students. The HGC is a representative student government and has 4 representatives elected from each of the schools. As the President of the Harvard Graduate Council, I am responsible for leading the HGC toward further fulfilment of its

What was your reaction when you learnt that you had been accepted in many Ivy league colleges? I was delighted at the possibilities of working on my aspirations. I was also happy that my hard work was paying off.

work while studying. I have enjoyed the process and learnt many life skills. For one, now I can cook many Nepali food items! How do the Americans treat students from Nepal? What is their general perception about Nepal? Most of my American friends in college were curious how I learnt to speak in

What advice would you give to the Nepali students aspiring to go abroad? I would say think hard about what you are interested in and not what the society wants you to do. Foreign universities will have many avenues. Also, I would encourage students to engage in community organizing before they come to the US so they understand the local context better. Lastly, I would recommend that you try to explore and understand Nepal, which becomes much harder when you get to your university. Why do you think Nepali youth today are so keen on going abroad? The first reason for Nepali youth to go abroad is better education and work opportunities. This is true of those that leave for the Middle East or for the West. The quest for an independent life also plays a large role. You have been involved in so many different fields. What do you think is your true calling? My true calling is public service – it is amazing that after many topsy-turvy of life, a past life in engineering, moving through several cities, companies, and universities in the US, I realize that I am most excited about my identity as a Nepali and want to seek every way to bring change back home.

You received a certificate of recognition from the late king for outstanding student leadership back in 1998. How did it feel? I was proud to receive this award on behalf of our leadership team of school prefects in Budhanilkantha School. Our team had worked tremendously at bringing about the positive change in the student experience. And meeting the late King Birendra Shah himself was an inspiring experience. According to you what are the major differences between the education system of Nepal and America? The major difference is in the emphasis on creative and critical thinking. The US system always encouraged us to focus on the key insights, with supporting arguments. In addition, the use of technology in facilitating education is much higher in the US. You have attended many prestigious institutions in Nepal and USA. How has your experience been? I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to attend these institutions. I have been most touched and inspired by the people that I met in these places. At Budhanilkantha, I made friends from many districts outside of Kathmandu. In the US, I have learnt from the diverse perspectives of friends from many countries. The professors and the academic environment have been inspiring. Can you tell us about the difficulties that you faced during your course of study there? When I first came to the US in 1998, I had to adapt to a new culture, from eating to studying to almost everything. Soon, I realized that I was completely on my own so had to manage my personal and professional growth myself. If something went wrong, I was responsible. I have missed Nepal every day. There were times where I had to

English. Nepal is still not well known; many know us by our Gurkha soldiers and Mt. Everest. Most were surprised that I had never seen snow (since I grew up in Kathmandu) before I came to the US. Also, many are not aware of the touristic attractions of Nepal, beyond its mountains.

Do you have any plans of returning back and settling in Nepal? Yes, I plan to return to Nepal to settle. I am looking forward to the day I will buy my oneway ticket home. 13. Your message to the youth of Nepal. Your identity is in your hands. No one, but you, can help it flourish. Especially today, our identities are at stake, we need to act on it.

Together, we can and will!

I was surprised when Navayata called asking me to be part of the Women’s Day event to celebrate my contribution as a woman. I am honored and thank you Navayata and its beautiful team for letting me be part of the celebration with the most successful and powerful women of Nepal.

The whole afternoon was full of surprises spent with outstanding women in their respective professions. The event started with a toast to all the women for being who they are and then went on to continue with the typical girl talks. The star Chef Yub Raj Pokhrel placed his signature appetizer on the table (Avocado Mozzarella & Philadelphia Cream with Pine Nuts Pesto) and provided a nice start to the afternoon of conversations, laughters, food, wine, and the best food that our chef could offer. The food, freshly prepared from the kitchen of Al Fresco—Soaltee’s Italian restaurant, was superb. With everything going smoothly on a lovely sunny spring day, the women couldn’t have asked for a better setting to unwind. Mission accomplished!

Wild Shiva Rat

ri celebrations

The Weed Effect I was in the 11th grade and it was my first Shiva Ratri in Kathmandu. My friend Anup insisted on going to Pashupatinath to try some cheap weed and also have a closer look at the magificent Sadhus. We reached there around noon and began our hunt for weed that wouldn’t be illegal on that day. In no time we met other friends from the college who were already smoking in a corner. We too began taking puffs in turn and before we knew it, it was already dark. Then we got onto the hood of a bus to go home. When we were about to reach our stop, Anup asked me for my home’s key and started getting off the ladder even before the bus stopped completely. When I got home, I saw that the door was flung open and Anup’s pants were lying near the bathroom. As I opened the door of the bathroom, I saw him lying flat on the bathroom floor with his vomit all around. - Anonymous

Ap le Vs JellyFish

Drunk Shower The night before Shiva Ratri, I and my friends were busy planning what we would do the next day. Since we were staying at a hostel full of guys, Shiva Ratri was an exciting festival. Few of the guys had even gone as far as Malekhu to get the so called good-quality Weed. With weed in their hands, the celebration started right away. We started smoking and few of the guys even brought Raksi. We didn’t sleep the whole night. On Shiva Ratri we were high the whole day. I didn’t even know when I fell asleep that night. After few hours of sleep I began feeling very hot. I wanted to take a bath so I went to the bathroom and on an impulse turned the shower on and ended up taking a bath with my clothes on. - Rojen Tamrakar Caught on the road I had never celebrated Shiva Ratri before, so when my friends came up with a plan to celebrate the day, I was all for it. The memories of the day are still vivid in my head. We met at our regular hang out in Basantapur. When everyone showed up, we started drinking. First came the vodka, then the shots and then God knows what. Most of us were beyond tipsy; we were full on drunk. And we all know what happens when a bunch of drunkards are together. One of my crazy friends thought it would be a lot of fun to walk all the way to Pashupatinath. From Basantapur! Drunk as hell, the rest of us thought it was a great idea. We started walking, shouting and acting crazy along the way. It was indeed quite fun. Suddenly, I hear my name being called. When I turned to see who it was, I was petrified to find that my father was standing on the other side of the road. That was one of the worst days of my life. I was grounded for a month and my mobile phone was also taken away. - Laxmi

Picking a new look for a new season can be tough. It gets even tougher when you’re a guy and your options always seem limited. Luckily, designers know of this and they’ve done us all a huge favour – creating a look for the Spring/Summer fashion scene that fits into many a style but puts them all together to make something fresh and wearable by everyone. Confusing isn’t it? Well, we’ll make it simple. The basic trick this spring season is to mix things up. This mix isn’t messy though, but a perfectly stirred cocktail. Part sport, part street style, part preppy: the hybrid result feels totally brand new. And the only rule that you need to remember is that there are no rules.

Shoe Fetish:

Pairs

The ‘Must Have’ – Platforms

That Every Woman Should Own

If you want the illusion of long and lean legs without the uneasiness, then platforms are the way to go. Contrary to popular belief, the heel of a shoe has nothing to do with whether or not the shoe is a platform shoe. Rather, it’s the part of the sole sitting under the front of the foot that determines whether or not the shoes are platforms. Most platform shoes have thick soles sitting under the front part of the foot. A footwear trend that started in the 70’s, platforms are this season’s favorites and the best way to show them off is to pair them with thigh-grazing dresses or slim, cropped pants.

By Akash Rajbhandari

The ‘Comfy Elevator’-

A Pair Of Eye-Catching Wedges If you’re looking for some height without having to feel uncomfortable (Yes, we all know of the aches and ouches associated with long heels), then, a pair of fashionable wedges is the one to buy. Many tend to confuse wedges with platforms; however, the fact that differentiates wedges from platforms is that in wedges, the wedge heel runs under the foot, from the back of the shoe to the middle or front. Ranging from casual to elegant, wedges, these days, come in all styles and heights and with the warm weather hitting K Town pretty soon, a pair of wedges is the shoe to buy.

The ‘LBD’ Of Shoes – A Low Heeled Black Pump An absolute essential in every woman’s shoe closet has got to be the low heeled black pumps. For all those times when a strappy sandal or an overly glamorous shoe seems inappropriate or in fact, too dressy, like an impromptu corporate meeting or even a funeral, the low heeled black pumps serves as the perfect saviour. Not only are the low heeled pumps stylish but they assure great comfort as well. So, make sure you grab them quickly cause it’s a pair that is versatile enough to wear with almost anything.

Shoe Fetish:

Pairs

That Every Woman Should Own By Akash Rajbhandari

The Absolute ‘Show Stopper’

– A Metallic High Heeled Dress Shoe

In life, comes some very special occasions. For all such occasions, we have special outfits, which to be honest, may not work very well with a pair of blacks. It’s a pair of metallic killer shoes that you should keep reserved for those special occassions. A pair of metallic shoes is ideal with pastels, grays, silver or whites, but they’ll still work just great if you’re in for a LBD. We’re sure that this pair won’t just catch eyes but also make you the ‘spotlight.’

The ‘Warm Cup Of Cocoa’ – Slippers

An ‘Alternative’ To Shoes – A Tall

No, we’re not talking about the ‘glamorous’ ones here. But the ones that you slip into after a shower, or while you’re in your bathrobe or simply while you’re at home. Extremely comfy, a pair of slippers is what every woman will want when she returns home after a tiring day. After all, whatever shoes you wear during the day, your feet will appreciate being pampered at night.

Boot

Whether it’s high heeled, ankle length or something as warm and comfortable like the UGG’s, the cold weather screams for boots. Depending on the pairs you choose, everything from denim to skirts can look fantastic with boots. An effective suggestion before the winter fades away is going ultra-high and raising the fashion stakes with over-theknee statement boots. Pair with a pencil skirt for the day or an everlasting LBD at night.

The ‘Comfort-Food’ Of The Shoes – A Semi-Casual Flat If comfort and style top your priority list, then its best you invest in a pair of flats. Ultra feminine and always stylish, flats serve as a popular choice for dressing up clothes without adding height or killing your feet. A great alternative to heels, flats go perfectly with just a pair of jeans as well as something not so casual like slacks. However, do avoid wearing them with wide-leg pants as they may look frumpy.

TIPS

Photography: By Karuna Gurung(Suzeeta)

Spring definitely calls for a look that is more subtle, more natural. With Pastel shades dominating this season’s make up trends, it is all about going minimal girls. No more smoky eyes!!! (at least for now). Inspired by Lauren Conrad (LC), we decided to give our model Trishala Maharjan a simple yet chic look that screams spring from every angle.

To achieve flawless skin, always remember to cleanse your skin daily and to protect it against the harmful effects of the sun. Applying eyeliner on the inner rims of the eyes doesn’t make them look bigger. On the contrary – it makes them smaller and less sparkling. Rosy cheeks are also very trendy this season, contrasting with natural and fresh skin. From coral pink to rose to a soft pink, pink lips have made a comeback. They have been seen all over the catwalk this season by models from Marc Jacobs to Prada. Though lip liners are not used much today, a great nude lip liner helps to prevent bleeding from your newest shade of pink lip color, helps to fill in lines, and gives a natural looking extension of the lips.

What our model has to say:

Make up Step 1. First apply a cleanser from Botanics-Skin Brightening cleanser and Rose Tonic toner from Joseristine. Step 2. Then, moisturise your face with Biotherm Age Fitness. Step 3. Now, generously apply a makeup base from Beauty Credit Moist. Step 4. Then, apply a foundation one shade lighter than your skin tone (MAC Mineralize Satin Finish SPF 15 for our model) and mix it with B&B Cream (M Perfect Cover). Step 5. Lightly dust the loose powder, preferably Ingrid Millet. Step 6. For the eyes gently sweep your eyes with nude and off-white eye shadow from Bleunuit Professional range. Step 7. Line your upper and lower lids with Lifeford ho-precise eye pen. Step 8. Then, apply two coats of black mascara from MAC Zoom Lash and curl your lashes with an eyelash curler. Step 9. After that, apply pink blush- Etude by Estee Lauder. Step 10. Finally, apply nude baby pink gloss by Givenchy to pretty up your pout.

Hairstyle Items needed: Comb, Hair Curling Iron and Hair Clips Step 1. After combing your hair, back-comb the front section of your hair and pull it into a slight puff. Secure it safely with hair clips. Step 2. Then take a curling iron and make loose wavy curls to the ends of the rest of the hair.

I never thought that I could look so stylish and bubbly. I was always hesitant to experiment new looks and thank you Navyaata for

I don’t know what it’s like living in London. :Rachael Rachael Manley

Restaurant operation is a daunting challenge on its own. Try adding a foreign locale, strange faces, a new language and a host of other challenges to the mix and it looks downright intimidating. We met up with two brave souls who have been doing just that in Kathmandu and doing it rather successfully. We wanted to probe their views and bring their suggestions to our readers especially in the backdrop of Nepal Tourism Year 2011. Rachael Manley is the owner of the Imago- Dei Café and Gallery, located in Gairidhara. Rachael has been a permanent resident of Nepal for the past fourteen years, having spent her childhood years growing up in the country. Scottish by birth, Rachael claims that if she had to live in the United Kingdom, she would find it difficult to adjust to the European way of life, having spent the larger part of her life in Nepal. The team met with her at her Café to get a look into her life in Nepal as well as her take on the Tourism Year What were the reasons behind opening up Imago-Del in Kathmandu?

- I grew up here and did all my high schooling education here. My parents are also here and living in Nepal. Also, it was efficient, cost wise, opening a business here rather than in the UK. You can learn and teach your skills here as well as learning and growing in the process. That can happen together but in London you need to get it right in the first month or otherwise neither you nor your business can survive. I don’t know what it’s like to live in London.

There are some negative points of Nepal but still ImagoDei found better shape here. What do you think about Nepal Tourism Year 2011?

- I think it is a fantastic initiative but the timing is bad. Was/is the country prepared for it?

- Well, that’s the problem. As far as the ability to promote the country as a nation, Nepal is not prepared. People say things are not the same as before. There have been individuals promoting tourism year but as a nation, may be not so much. Has any impact been had on Imago- Dei because of NTY?

- Not from tourists, no. This place is very much local friendly. Also, the location isn’t your normal tourist hangout place; it is a little off road. So, no change from tourists in that aspect.

I don’t think I will be leaving Nepal any time soon. : Ray Ray

Walter’s Restaurant and Bar We met up with Ray in his restaurant. Ray’s ethnic background is a quite colourful in contrast to his name – he is half Russian and half Ghanaian. He spent the early half of his life in England. Ray took over Walter’s Restaurant, situated in Babar Mahal Revisited, from Walter but he hasn’t gotten around to changing the name to his own, maybe he never will. He originally came to Nepal on business and has chosen to stay behind; Ray used to be a banker in his earlier life.

a limbo. Not every tourist wants to go trekking, rafting or kayaking. Most of the people want to come and see what the country’s all about and at the same time relax and go to sleep like the normal dwellers of the city. I actually think it will do more harm than good for the tourism industry. When people get back they will pass on the information to their friends and so on that Nepal is not a place to go, as you find no entertainment. For tourists coming from say Europe or the States, going to bed at 12 is not their idea of fun. The government has not done anything about it. Nobody outside of Nepal goes to sleep at 12; that’s when the parties start!

What were the reasons behind opening up a business in Kathmandu?

Have you seen any impact on Walter’s Restaurant and Bar because of NTY?

- I initially came here with the job in Banking Finance. I liked what I saw out here and decided to continue on staying and I don’t think I will be leaving Nepal any time soon.

- I don’t feel anything at the moment. It’s the same as this time last year.

What do you think about Nepal Tourism Year 2011?

- The country is in its transition period. Was/is the country prepared for it?

- I don’t think it was or is prepared for anything of this measure. First and foremost, infrastructure is not in place. The airport is outdated. The government is still in

Our effort towards Nepal Tourism Year 2011 has been more tactical than strategic. Some events here and there, but a concerted national effort is lacking. Both Rachael and Ray feel we have a long way to go in making NTY 2011 different from any other year. However, they both prefer to live in Nepal inspite of the traffic, the noise and all the ills that plague our city.

MOTI,

MOTI!!

Sometimes it ’s good to swear

All my life, I ha d always been the fat girl who was ridicul ed at school, ho me and work. I always laughed along with my friends and fa mily who mad e fun of me calling me mot i. In fact I seem ed to have been so used to people arou nd me calling me moti that I didn’t really fret about any of those re marks. One da y as I was walking home, I saw a group of guys near a cyber café ac ross the street . As I passed beside them I could hear them whistling and shouting m oti moti. I coul d feel blood rushing to my cheeks and ea rs. Their voices seemed to be banging my ea r drums. I don’ know what go t t to me but I w ent straight to the cyber cafe and began sw earing at them just in one brea th. My reaction seemed to have taken them aback like it di d to me. My swearing st opped and ther e was a few seconds of sile nce as people around us stopped and st ared. Only then did I realize what I had just done. I was ab out to open my mouth to sa y something w hen one of the guys said sorry bahini an d quickly went inside the cybe r café. The rest followed suit. And as for me I started walki ng ahead while some people w ere still mutterin g, staring and pointing at me. -Shalini Taman

A mark to remember

It was already dark and I was returning back home from my tuition. I was getting late to go home and decided to walk through the alley that directly leads to my home. Everyone had warned me not to walk through that alley no matter how late it was. I didn’t pay heed to that. As I was walking through that alley, there were a group of guys who were drunk and laughing like wild animals. I wanted to avoid them but walking past them was the only way through. As I came closer to the group, they started their bikes and started to circle me. I wanted to scream and ask for help but my voice chords didn’t move. Without second thoughts, I ran from the corner. In the process, one of the bike’s silencers hit my leg. It hurt badly but I continued running as fast as I could without looking back. When I reached home, I went straight to my room. I checked my leg and found that there was a burn in my knee and boils had already developed. There is still a mark in my knee and every time I look at it, it reminds me of that night. - Drishti

I felt raped

I felt raped. It gets dark when I get home. I work at a number of places and by the time I am done with my last shift, it is already dark. I got into the last micro that drops me off near my home. A group of jhyaap boys got into the same micro. One of them sat right next to me and the others sat nearby. It was an extremely packed micro. And the guy next to me started with reading my text aloud. I threw him a stare as that usually it works. But not that day. A half an hour drive to my home felt like ages. I sat there shivering, while this gunda pressed his body against mine. Nobody in the micro offered to exchange places with me. I kept quiet hoping the ordeal would pass away. As those boys got off of the micro, shouting obscenities at me, I felt very helpless. I started crying. The tears wouldn’t stop. My sobs attracted the attention of fellow passengers. But to my disgust, they actually blamed me for encouraging the boys to misbehave. I shouted back at them for I knew I deserved better. I was dressed fully, I had done no wrong. To those people in the Micro I ask where is your chivalry? Everyday many girls like me suffer silently in our public transportation. I hope someone will do something about it. - Anonymous

LIFE?

Do I have a life At all? Photographer: Usha Pun

“Our youth now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for their elders, and love chatter in places of exercise. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up their food, and tyrannize their teachers (Socrates, 469-399 B.C.)

Ah... you could mistake Socrates for today’s parents. You want to wear a fashionable dress. They disapprove. You want to get dreadlocks. They veto you. You get a tattoo. They will create a ruckus and start emotionally blackmailing you. You come home late once and you will have to endure hours of lecture session about the etiquettes that a person from a noble background should observe. We are all too familiar with the usual parents’ rants. WHAT are you wearing? Change your circle of friends! Is this the time to come home? You have been outside for EIGHT straight hours now! You have to study this! You have to study that! More gaali. More drama. Welcome to the world of todays youth. Are you living your life or your parents’? What happened to the idea of coming of age and being responsible for your own actions? In this issue of Youth Vibe, Navyaata approached the A Level students of Thames International College to share their views and their stories. No teachers, no parents. Strictly a youth affair. We were quite excited to see their energy

and their participation. We had a good mix of students - boys and girls, science and commerce. These students spent almost an hour dwelling upon the topic and exploring the breadth of parent-child relationships through their own stories and that of their friends. Here we have the excerpts! On What They are Studying: As 3 Idiots so well put, go after excellence not success. If you follow your heart and do what you truly like doing, yours will be the success and the adulation that comes with the success. Sadly, our parents in Nepal still force their children to study Science. Yes, Science seems to be the only subject for them! It seems every parent wants to project their visions of success onto their children. Hence, the pressure to be a doctor or an engineer. At Thames, we were happy to see that many students were studying subjects of their own choices rather than that of their parents. There were a few like Samin who could not pursue what she wanted to study.

Samin Rijal, 18 remarks, “Well as soon as I graduated from SLC, I wanted to

take up a course on Fashion Designing in Singapore. But then my parents disagreed. I did try to make them understand and I pleaded with them but they would not let me. They are my parents after all and they know better. Therefore, I gave up on my dream.”

Ritesh Shrestha,18 says “I started by studying science. But after a few terms, I realized I could not do well in Science. I switched to Business and my dad was fine with it. As long as I did not flunk the exams, he was ok with my decision.” On Curfew Times and Restrictions: A majority of the boys shared that they were allowed to stay out until 9 PM in the evening. For the girls, they had to be home much earlier. Their curfew time was around 6 PM in the evening. In general, the restrictions and the enforcement of the curfew hours were more strict to the girls. Girls related that they were not allowed to leave home in shorts and that they were warned against getting tattoos or any piercing. Not to be outdone, our girls were adept at making excuses or cococting combined-study events to slip out of their houses and

partying a wee bit more than their parents would approve. Our participants were all unconvinced of the reasons that their parents put up to justify the restrictions.

Nripendra Jung Basnet, said, “I once

Ritesh Shrestha, 18 says, “My parents

lock the gates at 9 and will not let me in after the time or at least they make a pretense of not letting me in.”

Samin Rijal, said, “As girls, we are not allowed to stay out at all. As soon as our school is over and if we are not home within an hour, our parents start frantically calling and asking us why we are not home yet.” On Their Circle of Friends: Many hands went up when we asked if anyone’s parents had problems with his/ her friends. Everyone related that they usually hear - “Who are you hanging out with?” “Change your circle of friends. They are no good” - from their parents. All the students were unanimous in saying that their circle of friends is out of bounds for their parents. Granted that parents are worried about the company that their children keep, after all everyone wants their child to associate with students with good grades or better manners. But in doing so, they should not dictate who to meet, who to socialize with and who to keep company with. A few students related their stories.

Spundun Lamsal, said, “I used to hang

around with my friend all the time and well this one time, my brother scolded him directly before even talking to me. It was embarrassing.”

Rupa Kafle, said, “There was a friend that I used to hang out a lot with. I liked her a lot. She later got into addiction problems. Even though her parents were friends with my parents, my parents did not want me to socialize with her. They told me many many times, but I did not pay heed.” On Whether They Could Approach Their Parents: Even though many of our participants had some complaints against their parents, many felt comfortable going to their parents with their problems. Although the cases were not always resolved, they did feel better by sharing it with their parents.

got into a fight in my school. I got the worse of it. When I got home, my mom asked me what happened. I told her the story. Rather than scolding and yelling at me, she told me she would go with me to the school next day. She came to the school, talked to the teachers and to the person who I brawled with. Case solved and I appreciated her for siding with me on that incident.” On The Main Bone of Contention with Their Parents: This was a varied mix. Some parents did not like their children’s company and constantly harassed them about it. Others took issues with their children spending all day and night on Facebook. Others had a problem with their children not studying properly or at all.

Nripendra Jung Basnet, said,

“Whatever I do, my mom nags. He just does not trust me at all. Sometimes I am watching too much television. Other times I am not studying. If I am studying, I am not studying properly. Why is your book closed? So and so’s son got 80% marks. Why can’t you do better? I may have been studying all day long, but if he finds me in that 30 min when I am taking a break he lets loose: see you are not studying at all.” On Emotional Blackmails: This seemed to be a favourite ploy of all parents into getting the submission of their children. After all nothing works quite like the emotional drama of referring to the travails of parenthood and of all the troubles that they had to go in raising you as a kid. This is also what all the participants hate the most. They think that it is not a fair fight. How can you be very unreasonable and hope to ram it through applying emotional blackmails.

On Generation G a p We thought this would play out in the liberal versus conservative viewpoints on what is permissible and what is not. However, we found that this played our more prominently on the mundanes fashion statements, music and movie tastes.

Retish Shrestha, said, “They make me all kinds of Puja. Even though I voice my displeasure they force me to sit through all the ceremonies.” Ahbhinash Jain, said, “I hate my

dad’s music choices. It is so old school. He listens to the dead musicians and each time I hear the songs I picture a black and white Romeo yearning for a lost love.”

Niroj Sapkota, said, “My parents

don’t allow me to watch English movies. They think English movies are filled with sex scenes.” So it seems. The experiences of the students at Thames International College are no different from those of the youth studying elsewhere. It seems that conflict due to generational gap (or the emotional toll of watching all those Indian soaps - thankfully the number has fallen considerably due to the

loadshedding) is inevitable. Where do we stand on this conflict? We are a little ambivalent. As always we are with you readers. We will always support you. Parents can be unbearable at times. But they can also be right at times. And when they are, and you don’t heed their advice, the consequences can be terrible. Not to mention that they will always have the upper hand in any argument henceforth. So strike a balance people.

Dear readers, Navyaata is listening and Navyaata would like to hear from you too. Next time it could be you on this page with a different view.

...“Maya felt he was ‘THE ONE’. Her happiness on finding the ‘perfect guy’ became the subject of envy”... :Maya's Story t seemed like a fairy tale for nineteen year old Maya Lama (name changed) when she met the love of her life on a flight to China. She was on her way to pursue a degree in medicine. The guy she met on the flight Sudeep Gurung (name changed) was also going to China for the same purpose. Instant attractions led to lengthy conversations and within minutes of meeting Sudeep, Maya felt he was ‘THE ONE’. Her happiness on finding the ‘perfect guy’ became the subject of envy to many of her friends. Sudeep was smart, witty and good looking. For the first couple of months Maya was on cloud nine. Having a loved one in a foreign land comforted her. However, spending all the free time she could manage with her boyfriend was driving her apart from her friends. Whenever she made plans with her friends he would coax her into cancelling them saying “I thought we would have a nice day together and stuff.” After few months of dating, he asked her to move in with him. Without any second thoughts Maya agreed and they started living together, a move which she regretted soon after.

- NOT Cool AT ALL!!! The first round of abuse started when one day he returned home and there wasn’t any food on the table. When she suggested he make some noodles, his anger flared and a slap landed hard on her cheek. Caught by surprise, it wasn’t till minutes later that she realized what had actually happened. Before she could retaliate, Sudeep was already on his knees, apologizing. He reasoned for his behavior saying he had a hard day at work and when he couldn’t find food, his temper just rose. Maya felt like it was her fault and instead of getting mad at him, started preparing dinner. All was fine after that incident. He would shower her with gifts and leave her sweet messages and was even fine with her going out with friends. But her happiness didn’t last long. Once after a night out with friends, when she returned home late, Sudeep was furious. He had his helmet in his hands and without saying a thing raised his hand and was about to strike Maya’s face. Acting on an impulse, she blocked the blow with her hands resulting in severe damage to her fingers. Many of us may think that this was the end of their relationship. But NO! Maya stayed with him and the cycle of abuse continued for years. It has only been a year since Maya broke up with Sudeep. She is still unsure as to why she decided to stay with such a person for so long. “At the time I thought I was in love but sadly it was just an illusion,” says Maya who is now in a healthy relationship. There are many others like Maya who have faced abuse in a relationship but were either too scared or too confused to confide in friends and family.

Abusive relationships don’t always involve physical assaults. Following are some important warning signs that you may be involved in an abusive relationship. When someone harms you physically in any way, including slapping, pushing, shaking, smacking, kicking, and punching •

When your boyfriend or girlfriend tries to control different aspects of your life, such as how you dress, who you hang out with, and what you say •

When he/she frequently humiliates you or makes you feel unworthy •

When he/she threatens to harm you, or self-harm, if you leave the relationship •

When he/she twists the truth to make you feel you are to blame for your partner’s actions •

When he/she demands to know where you are at all times •

When he/she constantly becomes jealous or angry when you want to spend time with your friends •

:Untimely Death On the night of July 2, 2010 Manisha Limbu (name changed) was found dead; hanging by a bed sheet in her room. The news came as a shock to many who remember her as a girl full of life; always smiling and making others laugh. It had only been a few months since she returned Nepal from US. Her reason for returning was to straighten her relationship with her boyfriend which had been rocky ever since she left Nepal. Close friends say Manisha was not the type to give up so easily on life. They later found that right before she decided to take her life; she had a massive fight with her boyfriend who was the one to find her dead. Her parents are still in shock regarding their daughter’s sudden death. They hope other parents do not go through what they had to and advise young lovers to think before getting into a committed relationship. One of Manisha’s close friends reveals “there was too much abuse in their relationship- a lot of name calling.” Although immediate reason for her suicide is unknown, her relationship with her boyfriend it seems took its toll on her life.

Manisha’s and Maya’s stories are just two bleak examples of what an abusive relationship can do to you. Normally, a person who is being abused is too scared to tell a parent or a friend about the abuse because they think that will bring pressure to end the relationship. People who are abused often feel like it’s their fault — that they “asked for it” or that they don’t deserve any better. But nobody deserves abuse. Whether it is physical or verbal, abuse is completely unacceptable. Many a times those who are in an abusive relationship don’t know that they are being abused. Here are some signs that will tell whether you are in an abusive relationship or not.

Unwanted sexual advances that make you uncomfortable are also signs that the relationship is moving towards the road of abuse. Many a times a partner may try to manipulate by saying stuffs like “If you loved me, you would do….” Such statements aren’t taken as a form of abuse by many but it portrays the person’s nature to control. These statements are used by people who are only concerned about getting what they want — not caring about what you want. So, if something doesn’t feel right in a relationship, don’t do it. You should learn to trust your intuition. Oprah Winfrey once famously said, “Love doesn’t hurt” completely in contrast to the perception of young boys and girls who believe if a person hurts them that means they love them more. Possessive nature is seen as being caring, that is a complete misconception. In many cases of abusive relationship, people stick with their partners hoping for a change in their behavior which ultimately never takes place. At the very first hint of abuse, it is best that you get out of it; away from the person and the relationship before it’s too late.

Signs That a Friend Is Being Abused • unexplained bruises, broken bones, sprains, or marks • excessive guilt or shame for no apparent reason • secrecy or withdrawal from friends and family • avoidance of school or social events with excuses that

don’t seem to make any sense

We continue our journey with Sunil Tamang. This issue, we travel with Sunil through Hangdewa, Dhovan, Gorja, Gupha Pokhari, Chainpur and Khadbari. We wish Sunil good luck and promise to bring you the remaining tales of his journey after its completion once Sunil has had sometime to unwind and narrate his experiences.

Feb 14: Hangdewa to Dhovan A girl came to my side and whispered im my ear “I love you” and I said;”Yahhhhhhhhhhhoooooo”. Unfortunately I was still inside my sleeping bag. I got a text in the morning from her, and that is how I came to know it was Valentines Day. After having lunch around 10 AM, I was ready to walk to my next destination. Balkrishna and Laxman, two brothers, walked about half an hour with me and gave me directions on how to get to Dhovan. After about three hours of slow walking, I arrived at Dhovan. Feb 15: Dhovan to Gorja After spending a day in Dhovan, it was time for me to climb uphill again. The trail consisted of some villageside walk and some forest walk. It took me a total of 6.5 hours walk to get to Gorja. In Groja, you will mostly find Sherpa and Tamang inhabitants. You will also encounter some Limbus. There is a Gompa (monastery) and few local hotels catering to occasional trekkers. Feb 16: Gorja to Gupha Pokhari The trail to Gupha Pokhari was quite challenging. I had to walk across a jungle to reach Gupha Pokhari situated at an altitude of 2900 m - the same height as Namche Bazaar. I started walking around 7 AM and after just 20 minutes, it began to rain. I packed my camera and covered my bag with plastic and then headed into the jungle. After walking for about 1.5 hours, I could see hills covered with snow. And within 15 min it started to snow heavily. In the snow, I could not make out the trail and lost my way. I walked blindly and luckily after some time I saw some people coming towards me. They were heading towards Gorja and pointed me the right direction to Gupha Pokhari. By the time I reached Gupha Pokhari, I was very cold. My bag was covered in snow and I could not wait for a hot cup of tea.

trekking solo across the Himalayan region

Feb 17: Gupha Pokhari to Chainpur Gupha Pokhari was covered in snow in the morning. I started my walk later than usual owing to the adverse weather condition. I walked down hill for 3 hours till Nundaki. The way was slippery and I lost my footing several times - nothing serious, I just have a few wounds to show for my gallantry. After lunch at Gurung’s Hotel, I headed towards my destination. Chainpur is a proper town with shops, schools, a police statio and a APF station. There are phone and internet services and a medical facility. Feb 18: Chainpur to Khandbari Khandbari is the headquarter of Shankuwasaba district and the gateway to Makalu Base Camp Trek. Overall this was an easy day for me. I am now walking along the Makalu Base Camp Trail. I expect more facilities on the trail as it is a popular tourist trail.

BRYAN ADAM’S

LIVE IN CONCERT and the AFTER EFFECTS

A night that made NEPAL PROUD

Text by Suraksha Basnet Photo credit: Manoj Dhootel

Canadian superstar Bryan Adams and his band rocked Kaaa-Kaa-Ka Kathmandu on the 19th of Feb, Saturday, 2011. Bryan Adams, the superstar, has spent the last three decades creating musical history. He has sold more than 65 million records, toured six continents and has hit the #1 position in over 40 countries around the world. His hits include chartbusters like “Summer of ‘69”, “Heaven”, “Please Forgive Me”, “(Everything I Do) I Do It For You” , “18 till I die”, “You love a woman”, “Let’s Make a Night to Remember“ and “Cloud Number Nine” to name a few. These were some of the songs that echoed through Ranghasala on the night of Adams’ concert, with around 20,000 Nepali fans singing on the top of their lungs, along with their idol. The concert was special not only for Adams (we doubt he would see the kind of fandom anywhere else), but also for Nepal -- this was the first international concert in the country. The rush surrounding the city was palpable from early afternoon. Everyone was talking about “the concert”. Traffic leading upto the stadium was at a virtual standstill from early afternoon. The security arrangements were very tight; not a single complaint was reported during or after the event. The crowd was amazing and thrilling, and was on its best behaviour throughout the concert. There were various ticket options available making this an event for all pocket sizes. Music lovers of Nepal definitely got a night to remember. The success of the event has given hope and has paved the way for more concerts and events of similar stature in the future.

1 “It was splendid. The event was great and grand. Seeing Bryan Adams and his band perform for us was just amazing. Heaps of thanks for all those who made it possible, and I appreciate the audience who were sober throughout. No fights, no worries, all went nice and cool. But one thing I must say, I was a little jealous of the girl who shared stage with Bryan Adams.” Biyondi Thapa. 2

“Seeing your favorite artist perform live for you is something you can never forget. I thank the organizers and the sponsors for making it happen. The concert is something we should be proud of. I mean, we successfully organized a show that India couldn’t. Man, the concert was awesome fun, I was fully charged and Bryan Adams was great, though I had not expected him to look that old.” Kalyan Thapa.

Organizers:

Simantha Gurung: I must say the event turned out to be grand. The crowd stayed sober throughout and the turn up was amazing. All the hard work really paid off at the end. Organizing the event was a hectic job. It took us two years just to get in touch with Callin Broka, who looks after Bryan Adams concerts in Asia. Organizing the stage and managing the audience was a big responsibility. We thank the audience for being temperate, restrained and sober, the Nepal Police and Traffic Police for being cooperative and supportive. With such nice response and cooperation, we plan in surprising Nepal with another superstar very soon. I would also like to congratulate everyone for having made the event a success.

Well if that’s the guess, there you go wrong. I got to see the both of them at VLCC Institute of beauty and nutrition this afternoon. This institute has been providing professional courses in Hair, Skin, makeup and spa which is located in dillibazar. The state of art training labs has been a big hit with the students who are trained by highly qualified and experienced faculties from India that stands to deliver the best, be seen as best and be the best This very renowned institute had this workshop on the occasion of Women's Day. It came up with the theme of Faces of Women where they honoured Angelina Jolie and Helen and turned two ordinary faces into the very two afore mentioned icons. So here the VLCC Institute had a makeover of Lara Croft and Helen and that really made feel as if the real personas were infront of me. What the models have to say after the make-over then? Smriti Bajracharya says" its feeling good. I may not look like Helen by posture but the makeup had done the justice to it." Similarly, Jaswani, holding the gun, said it's surely different but she loved it.

ith a ‘madal’ around his neck and a sack full of belongings, every morning Upendra leaves home and heads to New Road, where he sits on the pavement and plays his instrument for the passerbys. On his lucky days, the bowl placed in the front is filled to the brim but there are days when the bowl doesn’t see any generous hand. Nevertheless, he is happy where he is and has no regrets about moving to the city. It was some seven years ago when he landed in the capital for the first time. After all these years of living, exploring and experiencing the city, it has become his home away from home.

As with where to shop and where to find a salon, Upendra was clear where he wanted to eat. “Rameshwor hotel ma mitho khana paucha,” (You get delicious food in Rameshwor) he said. So Rameshwor it was. A few pieces of momos and sweets in his stomach and Upendra was done. We wanted to hear him play his ‘madal’. The tunes sounded a little rusty perhaps from all that thumping the madal had endured over the years. We felt it was time Upendra got a new madal which would be his companion for years to come.

pendra wasn’t born sightless. A disease that caught him when he was three years old left him blind but not helpless. He learnt to play ‘madal’ on his own whim. Although he has never been to school, he uses English words in between conversations; courtesy of his stint as a street performer in Thamel where he got to interact with foreigners. He can’t see but wears a watch on his wrist. “Rahar ta lagi halchani,” he says. Upendra is no different than any other normal young person. He likes looking good, likes movies. In fact, he tells us he has even acted in one starring Nepali superstar Rajesh Hamal but doesn’t want to recall his experience. He is still bitter about the fact that the producers paid him only hundred fifty rupees at the end of the shooting. Initially, he thought he would be paid a little more and had planned to buy some new clothes with his acting earnings. When we asked if he would like to buy some clothes, he smiled; his first throughout our interaction. Years of loitering around the neighborhood has familiarized him with the many alleys and lanes of New Road. Upendra led the way in our search of a decent clothing store while the rest of us followed him. It seemed he could sense and feel the different places. Upendra may have lost his eye sight but his knack

for knowing where to find things is intact. He has no confusions; indecisiveness has probably taken a detour from his life. He wanted a pair of jeans and a shirt (preferably red his favorite color). It was amazing to see him choose his clothes by feeling the material through his hands and checking the fit against his body. When something was missing or not according to his like, he didn’t hesitate to ask for another one. He finally settled with a pair of blue jeans and a blue with red striped shirt and a red full sleeved shirt. We then began our hunt for a pair of shoes. After passing a couple of shops we found a store. The owner instantly recognized Upendra. It was not a surprise as many have passed him over the years and registered his face in their minds.

A visit to a music store and Upendra found his match-a red Madal. He played it for us. This time the tunes were much better, much more melodious. After everything was done, we left Upendra at his regular spot; on the side of a pavement in New Road where you will always find him with a madal around his neck and a sack full of belongings.

With his long hair, unkempt beard and ageing lines, no one could be faulted for thinking Upendra is twice as old as his actual age.

With his long hair, unkempt beard and ageing lines, no one could be faulted for thinking Upendra is twice as old as his actual age. The whole time I referred to him by ‘dai’ only to learn that he was in fact younger than me. We convinced Upendra to get a hair cut and trim away his beard. The transformation was striking. He looked much younger and much neater after the grooming. While at the salon, I asked my friend for the time and I was surprised to hear Upendra, who can’t see, read me the time: it is twelve in the afternoon. When I asked him how he knew, his answer got us all bursting in laughter. “Bhog lag na

I was six when I first realized I had to start hating my father. Cries from my parents’ closed doors and sounds of broken canes were my lullabies. I’d wake up to midnight whispers from my mother that we had to pack and run away right then. At the wee hours of the morning we would go to places my cousins lived in. We’d knock at several doors, to find a few open. As I cuddled beside my mother in the small place we would be given, I chanted the mantra inside my head. “I have to hate my father. My father died when I was thirteen. It is not death that is strange. Dying is inevitable after all. Everybody experiences grief, but the incongruity lies in the fact that people move on. Act like your world has fallen for a few days, you then get back to your routine, you move on, you have to breathe. That I thought would not be me. When I was ten and watched a lot of Hindi cinemas, I dreamt of what I would do if somebody near to me died. I would wear long white gowns, wear a brushed off expression all the time, not go to school, stare at blankness from the windows, drink a lot, smoke a few cigarettes, skip meals, not talk to people and do all those dramatic thing an actor does in a movie in such a situation. But that was hardly how it went. My father died. And there I was, a few minutes later, thanking people for coming over with a smile. People were dumbstruck. I was too. But all that forced drama of sorrow, I realized, was not my cup of tea. I just had to move on and somehow that was more comforting. It is not that my father’s death took me by surprise. I knew my father was dying. I knew it was coming. This was why I tried not to be too attached to him. But when it happened, it still was surreal. I could not believe it when people said my father was dead. After all nothing had changed. The sky was still blue. The road was the same. My four year old brother was still scared of thunders. Everything was the same. How could he die then? My father loved me. That must sound normal, but he hated everybody else. As the world sits back amazed and claps, I smile back at what seems like a million flashes of light. The heels have my knees sore with pain and the dress won’t let me breathe but I wave on. Here I am, the ugly girl everybody said I was. Hidden behind all the rouge, foundations, shades, mascara and artificiality, I smile at the world, as their new beauty queen. The world has become welcoming overnight. The world has become real. Only I have become artificial. And then I hear people say, “She is really pretty!” When nobody said that, my father used to say that. My father.

Call Kantipur started its inaugural program on 30th Oct 2003 Monday. The show has been running for 8 years now. We talk to people regarding topics ranging from politics to social issues. The program is very popular amongst all age groups. I receive calls from 8 year olds to 80 year olds. The “Call Kantipur” family comes from all walks of life—army officials from Chhauni to shopkeepers in Bagbazaar. Call Kantipur has also been very popular for giving away prizes to its callers. Last season, we gave away prizes worth more than 1 Crore to our viewers. However, our callers primarily call us because they feel a part of our family. As the host and the producer of the show, I could not express enough gratitude to our audience for their love and I promise to bring out even more wonderful episodes in the coming days

……JAY NEPAL!!!!! Suraj Sing Thakuri

Call Kantipur and Navyaata are teaming up to make the show even more entertaining and fun. The callers just have to call in Call Kantipur and chosen one by lucky draw will get a chance to meet his/her favorite celebrity and Navyaata will be publishing the winner’s picture with the celebrity in its upcoming issue. So, Call at Call Kantipur and be famous. Don’t let go of your chance to be featured in our magazine with your favorite celebrity published in a magazine . - 01-4484082 (inside valley) - 01-4484083 (outside valley) If you are a caller from abroad, both phone lines are open.

Where are we now?

Educated Nepali women with the privilege of having a supportive family and environment around them, tend to develop myopia and dismiss women’s liberation as something that has had its day and a “hey people can we move on, it’s so out of fashion” attitude. Yet, women and girls of today are living the legacy of a long and hard battle seven generations of women fought passionately for. On March 8th 2011, Women observed the centenary of Women’s day. I am not a big fan of days that remind people of other people’s miseries. Valentine’s Day included. What got my goat on Women’s day suddenly was the fact that we- the other gender still have a day to prompt the world that ladies are still counted in as a deprived gender. So far as I was concerned, I was fine and those women who were still fighting for their rights could go and do just that. That was until; I heard a radio show on BBC. The reporter was interviewing a woman in Saudi Arabia who was talking about how women are treated there. I turned the pages of the newspaper and found an article about a woman who had been severely beaten up by her husband and how domestic violence was still existent in Nepal. Naïve women, even little girls are tricked and taken across the borders of Nepal to be sold as sex slaves even today. All of a sudden, I was acutely ashamed of myself. It is so easy for women like me to take that freedom of choice that we have today for granted. Yes, I’ll say it out loud. It has become cringe worthy for us to say “I am a feminist.” What of our sisters then? Have we forgotten them? Are we happy to be content that we have our education, our freedom, men who support us and careers that are going places? Turning back the pages of history I was shocked to realize that a country as advanced as the U.S. passed a bill which gave equal access to women for higher education and professional schools only in 1972. This meant that very few women were actually allowed to study law, medicine, engineering etc. up until then. This simple legal passage doubled the number of women who chose to become doctors, lawyers, engineers and architects. It took 72 years for the women to get the right to vote in the U.S. It was in 1920 that the adult suffrage was finally passed for women. That was the first cycle of the women’s lib movement. 84 N Av ya ata •CHAITRA 2 0 6 7

In the 1960s the second wing of the feminist movement took flight when the issue of birth control was introduced. This idea created an upheaval as this marked the beginning of women asking for the right to control her body. It may seem trivial now, but at the time, it altered the way a woman’s sexuality and role was perceived. Now, a woman could choose to be a mother or not, and it altered the very fabric of society. There are still various concerns for women. Controversial issues which challenge religions on why women are not admitted as priests, the banning of pornography which degrades women and the argument of the mommy track where women with careers who have babies should be accommodated accordingly by the corporation they are working for. My personal view is that the women’s movement today is not a movement against men. It’s a movement against the way the idea of a woman has been conceived, through religion and ancient scriptures. I think it is time for us to redefine what we are rather than clobber the men of today for a past that they did not write. On March 8th 2011, I updated my facebook status – Women’s day! Some of us must be tired of the Women’s lib movement, but just look around you. Women are still marginalised. We must work towards not having this day at all …Some day there must be a man’s day too. “ I am a feminist and I don’t care how old fashioned that sounds. Until the day female infanticide is not practiced, until there are no sex slaves, until the day a see a woman priest in Pashupati temple – I will remain a feminist.
