From the editor
Dear Navyaa Family
Happy Valentine’s Day readers!!!
Love takes center stage in this issue. We bring our readers a number of stories, interviews, blogs, and fashion-looks inspired by the crazy cupid. Our ‘Power of Two’ features 3 couples who define the notion that love grows not wanes through the years of marital bliss. Then we have ideas – for him, for her and for both – to make this V-Day a never-toforget affair. How can we leave out fashion? After all it is so important to look gorgeously beautiful and stunningly handsome in that V-Day night out. Our theme in the fashion shoot this issue is the looks inspired by the different moods of a couple – lovers at heart. And there are the haters! Remember fellas, it is useless to get tangled into the significance of the Valentine’s Day, religious or otherwise. It has long been celebrated as a romantic day for loving couples. How can any reasonably adjusted person feel aggrieved about that? That does not mean you must find someone to be with on the V-Day. It is just a day for people to celebrate the idea of love. And to hammer home the point, we bring you a few of the successful young Kathmanduites who are riding solo and are rocking it. They are happy, they are fun and, most importantly, they have no beef with Valentine’s Day. And congratulations to the members of the Nepali Women U-19 National Cricket team who were the winners of the Third Asian U-19 Cricket Tournament! We are proud of you and your achievements. So long readers… Navyaata Team

Title: Valentine’s Day EPIC fail. The world ending any time at 2012 sounds good. In fact, it would sound even better if it were to end right here, right now. A massive black hole just ready to swallow the entire world and my embarrassment with it. But before being gobbled up, I hope that jerk and that treacherous bitch tumble and roll down into a river full of human AND animal feces, in front of a crowd. The crowd will then laugh at them and start throwing rotten tomatoes and eggs at them. Or perhaps anything hard enough to cause a coma. I will take a video of their distress and upload it on YouTube for the entire world to watch, point fingers and laugh while I sit back and enjoy the show. Then I’ll pray for the world to never stop spinning, I want to savor their humiliation for a long, long, LONG time. Payback for how they scoffed at me in the restaurant earlier this afternoon. SHOOTS! Mum screaming in the back, “Shut that metal book and come help me in the kitchen!” She calls my MacBook a metal book; I corrected her dozens of times to no avail. She says since it’s made of metal why not? Also she constantly reminds me who paid for the Mac in the first place. All I can say is “You” and roll my eyes. Will reveal what happened later today in my next post after I’m done helping mum out with the menial housework. P.S: Happy HORRID Valentine’s Day XOXO
Posted on: 11.37pm, Friday, 14th February
Title: I change my mind! Did I recall mentioning I wanted the world to end? I take it all back! Except the part where he and she suffer epic humiliation. What happened was X, my supposedly “sworn sister from another mother” as she always claims to be in her really high screeching voice, told me she’d help me hook up with Y, my crush since ancient history. I’m too angry at them to even mention their names. And I can honestly say I was blinded by the false idea of love. Y, the boy I swore I would one day be the bride to, is now the boy I wouldn’t even want to give my two cents to. Sigh; love is really in the eye of the beholder, it makes even the most callous person, like Y, look like saints. Jade, you were right; you always asked me what I liked about that pompous jerk. And I’m sorry for always saying you were ignorant for not seeing how wonderful Y truly is. I’m also sorry for not heeding your advice on staying away from X, that abhorrent bitch. But she reeled me in using my weak spot for Y; she said she would help me get a date on Valentine’s Day with Y, which she did by the way. Which I DO NOT appreciate by the way. But because of that uneventful incident I met the ‘one’. Phew, it’s getting late and I’m beat with all the roller coaster ride today, will tell you guys EVERYTHING tomorrow, I promise. P.S: HAPPY AWESOME VALENTINE’S DAY!! XOXO

love
A c t uall y Text: Samriddhi Rai
We all grew up listening and reading to all the cliches about what love should mean, didn’t we? (I mean it’s all over the place) Behind truck bumpers that reads, “Love is life” or them pompous street-smart boys wittily f launting tees that have “No money, No honey” written on it. And, I remember to this day enquiring my mom as a kid over those hit Bollywood songs that claim of loss of appetite and sleep when in pyaar. Of course, my mom had nothing but a baff led expression to give to me at that time. And, oh well, that was that. It wasn’t until I had my first crush on a boy that I realized those cheesy lyrics to be (as ashamed as I am to confess right now) well- true! For the first time in my life, the words of romantic songs started making sense to me. And the one person started becoming so important, the whole world be damned, eh! And for an inevitable point of human lives, there she was, Miss Sheryl Crowe: patiently waiting for us with her song ‘The first cut is the deepest’ speaking our minds (and Yes making money out of it.) Lengthy conversations over the phone, those crazy chats on the net, the “I cant live without him” phase, the unexplainable fury to those who would generalize teen love as mere puppy love, sigh. After twelve complete years of my all-girls schooling, a co-ed college (where I learnt a great deal about making friends with boys-completely new to me) and after a few crushes, a few dates and a few heartbreaks, at the age of 23 was when I met Yachnit. So, it’s safe to say that I had left behind most of my disillusioned years of the the one or the very clichéd concept of soulmate by the time I met him. You know what they say, that we attract the kind of people in our lives who are much like us? Couldn’t be much true in our case. I enjoy how our sense of humor is almost too similar. We love to laugh, we both have a knack for sports, we both enjoy the same kind of cuisines (But he listens to RNB and I love country music- but we’ve made our peace on that). Other than that, Yachnit and I are just so compatible in more ways than I could’ve possibly wished for in a partner. We first met over the net. Lame right? And if things hadn’t turned out the way it has for us, I would probably continue thinking the trend as super lame. Sometimes, I secretly wish I had a beautiful story to narrate when people ask us how we met; maybe across a bar where our eyes meet for the first time or stumbling with our books scattered all over the f loor in one college alley would’ve made a good setting, right? But I guess real life doesn’t work that way. He was literally a thousand miles away in the UK and I was here in Kathmandu when we first came across each other, when really, the universe had us co-existing near to each other all along. It was only later that we found out that we were born in the same year, grew up around the same area, went to 16 Navyaata • FALGUN 2 0 6 8
schools that were close by and lived only ten minutes away from each other- but fate wanted us to meet only after a good two decades of existence. And it was perhaps the perfect time for us to meet too, although it wasn’t the perfect relationship when we first began dating. We both had trust issues, we both had experienced our fair share of failed relationships and when a point came where we sensed seriousness - we both bolted. Our relationship actually stood on rocky shores, breaking up twice within the first six months of dating – totally confusing our entourage of friends. They’d be like, “So okay, you guys have broken up but you still hang out and stuff?” And I would be, “Sure. Just because he is not my boyfriend anymore doesn’t mean I hate him, Duh!” And they’d just roll their eyes and give me a “Get real!” expression every single time. But that was what was special between Yach and me. We just never stopped being friends. From the hours-long skype video chats we used to have when we were time-zones apart to the endless good times we had before and during our dating phase-we totally enjoyed each other’s company. You know, the fear of being hurt is the worst kind of fear- a fear that clearly had its grips on both of us. And many people give up on beautiful things because they’re too scared to pursue them. I am happy that as a couple, the two of us eventually stood up for something that was just so undeniably special. I deeply love my boyfriend. I do, with all my heart. And all through the highs and lows of our relationship I have always known it from my heart that he has always been just so perfect for me. While many may question my brutally candid public confession of love, all the while several of them out there waiting for their moment of evil bliss to see us break up; I have understood in my heart that if a situation were to arise where we might have to move our separate ways, I know I will have found the courage in my heart to let him go and still love him and be happy in his happiness. This is true love for me and I will forever work to cherish and strengthen this beautiful bond we have. For he is special, just so special. And to the universe that sent me such a special person in my life- I will always be thankful. For I have a lot to learn from him and perhaps a lot to teach him too. At the end of the day, just this fact makes me happy that I make him happy too. “Love is patient; love is kind and envies no one. Love is never boastful, nor conceited, nor rude; never selfish. There is nothing love cannot face. There are three things that last forever: faith, hope and love; but the greatest of them all is love.” – The Bible

V-day special
Gifts For Your
heart
Sweet-
Text and illustrations:: Bandhana Rai Photo:Sampurna M.
For him Girls, This V-day destroy the popular notion that only guys should buy presents for us girls. Grab your purse ladies, we are going shopping!
VIDEO GAMES AND CONSOLES No doubt, like our love for desserts, guys have an affinity for video games. If your guy is a game freak and if your pockets are deep, buy him the latest Play Station series or one of his favourite games. Hand it to him wrapped and watch the spark in his eyes as he opens it. However, don’t complain if he gets hooked ladies. This is the ideal gift for a long distance relationship. If you two ever break up and you think he is a real jerk, ask him to return it to you, then break it in front of him and watch him weep. Or give it to his brother or your next boyfriend. COLOGNE Buy him cologne that you like. You will be killing two birds with one stone, he will smell sensational and you will actually like the smell. So get ready to snuggle up! CLOTHES; BOXER SHORTS, SHOES, A WATCH AND ALL THAT JAZZ This is the perfect gift if your guy hates shopping or has the fashion sense of a 70 year old grandpa. This way you can subtlety dress him up the way you like without him knowing. So go get him that nice shirt you always thought would look good on him or that nice pair shoes he wants. Or you can give him heart-shaped boxer shorts, ask 18 Navyaata • FALGUN 2 0 6 8
him to wear it and show you how it looks. Ha ha! Make sure you guys are alone in the room. SOMETHING SPORTY FOR THE SPORTS DIE-HARD If your guy, like almost all the guys on this planet, is the regular sports fanatic, buy him something related to the sports he loves.Like a basketball if that is his fancy or a jersey of his favourite football team. FOODS We all know the theory that a man’s stomach is the way to his heart, so why not practice it? This V-day stuff him up by making a truck load of all his favourite food. You just sit back and watch him happily chow down the food in front of him. MUSIC + GADGET= GUY HEAVEN Much like food, gadgets get them every time. Boys simply can’t resist the feel of cool metal against their skin, especially if there are buttons to push or wheels to turn. If he doesn’t already own an iPod and you own a stuffed wallet, why not buy him an iPod NANO and fill it with all his fave jams. BINOCULARS The best gift is something unexpected, something he wouldn’t buy for himself, and is able to elicit an emotion. Believe it or not, a pair of binoculars is all 3. Chances are he wouldn’t own one unless he’s a private detective, a weird birdwatcher, or a total pervert. Plus, you will take him back to his childhood when he was a little boy and one of his fantasies was to own a bino. PLENTY OF KISSES Man are easily pleased creatures, even if you don’t get them anything, they will be content as long as they know you love them. So show them just how much you love them by showering them with kisses, make him a kiss coupon if you must. He will be pleasantly surprised!
V-day special
For her Are you a guy? Do you have a girlfriend? Is it Valentine’s Day? Still haven’t bought her any presents yet? In fact you have no idea what to buy for her? Well, fret not, Navyaata has the solution. Here are our last minute gift picks.
BUY HER CHOCOLATES Go back to the basics! Yes, yes, we know it is overrated, but we also know a girl loves her chocolates. So why not dig deeper into your pocket and buy her a really expensive, high quality chocolates? It’s Valentine’s Day after all. And those of you brave enough to try, why not spice it up a little (a lot actually) bit? Instead of handing her the chocos the old fashioned way, via hands, pass it to her with your mouth! Seal it with a chocolatey kiss! Now that will send her knees a-buckling and her hearts a-fluttering! Be sure to utilize your tongue, if you know what I mean. Winks* PAIR THAT CHOCOLATE WITH A BOUQUET OF FLOWER Instead of just buying chocolates, present her with a bunch of roses or a bouquet of her favourite flowers. Trust me; receiving a bouquet of flowers from her man is in every girl’s list of things to happen. You will be making one of her dreams come true. For those of you a little shy on cash, just one stalk of rose or her favourite flower will be fine. MAKE HER A CANDLE LIGHT DINNER Suure, you have eaten food made by her many times. Well, this V-day turn the table and whip out your aprons for YOU will be the one making delectable treats. Surprise her by cooking her a sumptuous meal. It shows your sincerity as YOU made it yourself. Throw away your shame and get your cheesy mode on by saying something along the lines of, “I cooked this with a sprinkle of salt, a shake of pepper and HEAPS of L-O-V-E.”Please try this at the risk of burning the food, ask your trusty mum or unwilling sister for help. Make sure to practice, practice and practice! Take it up a notch and lead her into the room blindfolded that will keep her anticipating, she will never see it coming.
body. So take some time off and learn how to make delicious pastries for your sweet-toothed girlfriend. For those of you who are absolutely hopeless in the kitchen or are just too lazy (tsk) OR are allergic to flour, take the easy way out and buy her the edible delights. You can go get some at Bubble Tea Bistro, situated at Jhamsikhel, contact them at 9813931241. They sell heavenly cupcake topped with colourful handmade cream and the cutest mini marshmallows, and sprinkled with chocolate rice. Choose the ones with pink colored cream to go with the Valentine’s Day theme. CHARM BRACELETS/ PENDANTS/ JEWELRY Girls LOVE LOVE LOVE jewelry, get her something like a cutesy heart necklace or bracelet and a single rose. You can also get her a necklace with the initial of both your names. If your wallet is stuffed with greens, buy her a nice silver or gold necklace or bracelet. TEDDY BEARS, BALLOONS AND A HANDMADE CARD. Girls are suckers for anything cute; and teddies, if you haven’t heard are CUTE. Choose a really cute teddy bear, the bigger the better. Please don’t choose a stuffed dog or a frog or other ugly scary animals. You can tie a bunch of balloons filled with helium on the teddy’s hands and attach a handmade card and give it to her. The card has to be specifically HAND MADE, so get your creative juices flowing. WRITE HER A LOVE SONG
P.S: you can give the badly turned out ones to the people who secretly annoy you!
If you are blessed with musical prowess (lucky you!), pen down a song especially for her and make her go aawwh! Having a song written is the ultimate fantasy a girl always day-dreams of. This V-day sit her down and belt out the love song you wrote for her. Expect being attacked with multifold of kisses at the end of the song.
BAKE HER A CAKE OR CUPCAKES
MIX IT UP!
Who said only a guy’s stomach is the way to his heart? We girls have a deep-seated infatuation with desserts of all sorts. We go gaga over them, minus the huge amount of calories it adds to our
Pick your favorite options from above and mix it up! You can pair chocolates with a bracelet and balloons or cupcakes with a teddy. You can’t go wrong with the combos above.

V-day special
For both WRITE A LETTER RENEWING YOUR LOVE How about you guys write a letter professing your undying love for each other? Conduct a mini ceremony and read out the letter and renew your vows. Or put the letter in a bottle, a wine bottle will do, and give to each other. This will definitely help cement your relationship, and you guys can make it a yearly thing. MAKE IT PERSONAL At the end of the day whatever the gift is, make it personal and show your sincerity. It’s the amount of thought you put behind the gift you bought that makes it really special, not the price tag. Like if your partner is a bookworm, get them a book you know they have been dying to get their hands on. Get them a present that will mean something to them. Innovation in gifting can make even the smallest gift look extremely special and guarantee a huge smile on your partner’s face. On that note HAPPY VALENTINES’ DAY PEEPES!

The Power of Two
Binaya Saud and Tina Saud Text / Photo: Shashtika Rana
24
Binaya Saud, one of the owners of SUBISU Group, completed his schooling and college from St. Xavier’s, Kathmandu in 1992. He completed his engineering from Bangalore in 1996. After studies, Binaya worked in a private training company where he got acquainted with the ways of the business world. After that he worked in Nepal Electricity Authority for two years. Around that time, Binaya established the SUBISU Group with his friends and from 2001 he has been fully involved in it. Tina Saud, born and brought up in Mumbai completed her schooling and college from Mumbai itself. She completed her Masters after marriage and is currently a Lecturer in Himalayan White House College. Coming from two different cultural backgrounds they were arranged to tie the knot on 6th February 2003 and now have two beautiful kids Tulip Saud, 5 years and Idhant Saud, 3 years. Navyaata would like to share with you the short and pleasant interview we had arranged with this wonderful and down-to-earth couple.
Navyaata - How did you two meet?
Binaya - I was called to see her. Our relatives had arranged a casual meeting for us. Tina - Meeting for a typical arranged marriage.
Navyaata - How did you know that you were both perfect for each other?
Binaya – I had preset requirements some of which were that the girl should be educated, should be focused in life and should be lively. After the first meeting we met in the Bakery Café where I thought she was the right girl for me as she met my criteria list. Tina – Mine was the same as well (with a bright smile). I also had some criteria in mind like he should be educated, independent, etc and he fit well with them so I made my decision.
Navyaata – How has life changed after marriage?
Binaya – There were a lot of changes. I was very much carefree in life before and not focused but after marriage I was much focused and life became more stable. Tina – There was a drastic change in my life as I was a girl born and brought up in Mumbai with a completely different culture and a different way of living. Kathmandu was a new environment for me. But I found him very supportive, not just him even all my in-laws were very supportive. The family support made it easy for me to adapt to the culture here in no time.
Navyaata – What do you guys fight over?
Binaya - We mostly fight over the issues of our children. I am protective towards our children and like to pamper them and she tries to control them a lot and we end up fighting. Tina – Yes. The children issues. Otherwise, we don’t fight much. We have not had big fight till date and I hope we don’t do that in future as well. (Touch Wood!)
Navyaata – Who solves the matter after your fights?
Together- both, we should say. We have a deal about this matter. The one who makes the mistake gives up first.
Navyaata - One thing you really like about each other?
Binaya – I must say his caring nature towards me. She calls me up three to four times a day, which is sometimes irritating when I am in a meeting but at the end of the day it’s the care and love she has for me and I love that. Tina – He is very loving, caring and supportive. Above all he always supports me in whatever I do.
Navyaata – What is the one thing you don’t like about your partner? Binaya – She is very emotional. Though she realizes things quickly, she reacts very fast to every situation and I don’t like that about her. Tina – He comes home late although it is because of his business and meetings and I don’t like him coming home late.
Navyaata – What is the best thing about getting married? Binaya – Like I said before, marriage makes you more responsible. There is more stability in life now. Tina – I have found my soul mate. I have found a person who loves me the most, who is very supportive and with whom I can share everything. What else could be the best?
Navyaata - Tell us the one moment that you had with each other that you will never forget?
Binaya – The most memorable time together was our honeymoon (It was four to five months after marriage) because we got to know each other more during that time. Our marriage was arranged and we hardly knew each other before that. Tina – Should we be saying that? (Laughs) Our wedding and yes of-course the honeymoon.
Navyaata: What was the first gift you gave to each other on Valentine’s Day? Binaya- It was a watch. Tina- He gave me a diamond ring. (Smiles)

The Power of Two Dr. Kabiraj Bantawa (PHD) and Mrs. Sumitra Bantawa Photo By: Sampurna M.
26
Tell us how did you first meet? Kabiraj: A friend of mine who was one of her relatives used to tell me a lot about her. Without letting her know, we would constantly go to her place making several excuses, of course never letting anybody know I was looking for her. Finally, on the fifth time we went there, I met her. Sumitra: I was actually out at my cousin’s place when I had a row with my brothers and went back to my place. When I arrived home, there this stranger was, with a funny looking haircut. I was asked to do a Namaste.
What is the one thing that you best like about each other? Kabiraj: She has the ability to spread happiness to the people she is with. She can adjust well in any situation and the best thing that I like about her is that she is content with life. I might have a bad day but at the end of the day, I know that I will return home to a wife for whom it does not matter whether I am rich or poor. Sumitra: He knows how to cheer me up really well. He is a loving husband who makes me feel cared. He almost pampers me.
How did you know that you were perfect for each other? Kabiraj: The first thing that attracted me towards her was her innocence. Thereafter, I came to know how easygoing she is about life. I needed a partner who could ease my stress in the bad times. I feel lucky that I found her. Sumitra: In the beginning, I had never given this question a serious thought. I have four sisters and they actually persuaded me into the relationship. But with time, of course I found out that no other man could have been better than him for me.
Then what do you dislike about each other? Kabiraj: At times she can lose her temper and start fighting over really small issues. Sumitra: Some weeks, he stays awake every night studying in the library room. I do not like it. Also I dislike the fact that he gives more time to his professional life than his family. I wish it would be the other way around.
Tell us what differences you found before and after the marriage? Kabiraj: Of course I became more responsible. More than that she added to my life. Along with her came all the good things in life. Sumitra: Marriage brought a whole new meaning to my life. I think I became happier. What do you guys fight over? Kabiraj: We don’t usually have huge fights. It is usually over small issues and our daughters. It is funny in the end how trivial those issues are. (laughs) Sumitra: I do not like it when he uses an irritated and a high pitch tone. That is when it begins. Who is the one who has to first come up with an apology in case of a dispute? Kabiraj: It’s me. (Sumitra nods)
What is the best thing about getting married? Kabiraj: The family environment you get after marriage magically removes all your tensions away. We get people to share our feelings with. Sumitra: Being bonded in a close knit relationship, being loved by your husband and your beautiful children. Tell us the most memorable moment you have had together? Kabiraj: The longest term we lived separately was for three and a half months when I was in the US for my doctorate degree. On the fourth month, she came to meet me there. It seemed like we met for the first time. Sumitra: Our first family trip together across the US was really memorable. A lot of fun things happened. What was the first gift you gave to each other on Valentine’s Day? Kabiraj: We were not very fond of celebrating Valentine’s Day back then but the first gift has to be flowers and chocolates. Sumitra: I saved money on my own and got him a shirt. (smiles happily) FALGUN 2 0 6 8

The Power of Two Samir Acharya and Barishma Acharya Text / Photo: Shashtika Rana
28
A decade long relationship has gone by and still the love between them is fresh and young. Samir Acharya , Head, New Baneshwor Branch, Himalayan Bank Limited completed his MBA from School of Financial Management, London and Barishma Acharya , Senior Manager, Shikhar Insurance Company Limited completed her MBA in marketing from Kathmandu University. Their 10 year old marriage has made them strong and their bond has been tightened by their kids, Suhasha and Jaibir.
Navyaata: Tell us how did you first meet?
Samir: Her photo was sent to me by my family while I was studying in England. Then I came home to meet her. Secretly, I went to her college to see her. She was not aware of it and was in her own world with her friends. Since it was an arranged marriage we met formally later for the first time at our relative’s place. Barishma: I was not aware that he had already seen me before. I met him for the first time at our relative’s place.
Navyaata: How did you know that you were both perfect for each other and why did you decide in getting married?
Samir: We instantly clicked. We went out for a few months before our marriage. In one of our outings my Volkswagen Beetle broke down in the middle of the road, she got down from the car and pushed it without hesitating. It kind of gave me a positive feeling towards her. Barishma: We got time to know each other for few months after our marriage was confirmed and I must say that the frequency level at that point of time matched and we both took the risk of getting married. (Laughs)
Navyaata: Tell us what is the difference before marriage and after marriage? Samir: It is the same I should say. I have the same feeling and love for her as I used to have before getting married. Before we were two, now we are four and that is the only thing which has changed. We share a very strong bond. Barishma: I fell in love with him after our marriage. It has been ten years since our marriage and I have become more mature and responsible. We have two young children who require a lot of our time and attention. We make sure that we spend our quality time with each other and with our kids.
Navyaata: What do you guys fight over?
Samir: I normally don’t fight. (Giggles). Barishma: Every couple has their own share of discussions and arguments so we also do have our own share of tiffs sometimes but it never gets serious and we patch up in no time.
Navyaata: Who is the one who has to first come up with an apology incase of any disputes? Samir: We don’t have serious fights over anything so we don’t have to apologize. Barishma: We share a very balanced relation where we respect and give space to each other. When I throw tantrums he handles it lightly and starts laughing and I do the same when it is the other way.
Navyaata: What is the one thing you like the best about each other?
Samir: On one hand she is a professional lady, on the other hand she is a daughter-in-law, a mother and a wife but she handles all her responsibilities perfectly. Though we have people to take care of things at home, she involves herself completely in taking care of our kids, my family and I really like that about her. Barishma: He is honest, sincere and has a really good sense of humor. The best thing about him is his ability to make me laugh.
Navyaata: Tell us what is that you don’t like about each other?
Samir: (after a long thinking) Nothing as such. Barishma: Spending long hours on golf course during weekends but on a positive note I don’t have complaints as it will keep him fit.
Navyaata: What according to you is the best thing about getting married?
Samir: You will have a partner to rely on and share everything with. Barishma: You get to share the ups and downs in life with your loved one and you will have a strong shoulder to lean on in difficult times as life always does not flow on a placid sea.
Navyaata: Tell us the one moment that you had with each other that you will never forget?
Samir: She almost fell from the stairs in one of our dates before marriage and I held her. It was like a movie and we still share a hearty laugh remembering that incident. Barishma: There are many unforgettable moments but since he reminds me that incident particularly quite often, I will never forget that too. It was rather funny than romantic. (Both laugh)
Navyaata: What was the first gift you gave to each other on Valentine’s day?
Samir: It was a Schaeffer Pen. I lost it though but I still have the box safe at home. Barishma: He mostly gifts me perfumes. During our second meeting he presented me Thierry Mugler’s Angel which is my favourite till date. He has gifted me Kenjo’s Amour perfume this year two weeks before Valentine’s Day saying that it is his V-Day gift for me.

eart shaped chocolates. Red balloons. Romantic mixtapes. Candle lit dinners. Yes Yes Yes. We get it. Valentine’s Day is here. And you can see it everywhere - the streets, the stores and the internet. It makes us ponder if everybody around us are just as psyched for this ‘lover’s day’. What is the big deal anyway? What is the hype all about? Must everybody have a partner on that day? Can’t anybody have fun without being in love? Perhaps I will be crucified for thinking that Valentines Day is another great marketing gimmick to have the people shell out more bucks. They certainly have been very successful. Just look at the fremzy all around you. Navyaata brings you a few of the successful people of Kathmandu who are riding solo

and rocking it! They are not burdened by emotional atyachaar. They do not have to say I love you 50 times a day and they do not have to report every event of their day to a significant other. They don’t have to waste their hard-earned money on pampering someone and their freedom is still theirs’. They can stay focused on their career without being distracted every 5 minutes. Their emotional traumas do not come from another person. They are single. They are successful. And what is the best thing you ask? They are happy.

Jayendra Shrestha
Jayendra Shrestha, the proprietor of Bossini says, “I am a dreamer. The kind who dreams by the day.” He adds, “ They say the dreams you see in the daylight aren’t mere dreams but they are also what we call determinations and they always come true . I do seem to have managed to establish a successful business of my own but I still feel there are higher milestones for me in waiting. On his singlehood, he believes what Steve Jobs says “If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on.” A relationship is: A celebration to the commitment and the bonding shared by the two people in love. Why aren’t you in a relationship? Somehow I cannot be a Romeo who meets a girl and falls for her immediately. The whole process of meeting someone and eventually ending up in a relationship works very slowly in my case and I feel it will only get slower as I mature. But that does not mean that I have stopped looking. I am a firm believer of destiny, it will happen when it has to happen. It may take years of solitude or one hot second of realizing the girl next to you is the one you want to spend the rest of your life with. What’s on your I-pod at the moment? Local people. All day, all night! Your favorite pizza topping? Salami/Ham Last time you did a household chore? Honestly, I am hopeless when it comes to doing household chores. The closest I came to doing one was few months back when I made lunch for my family. Your dream date? Monica Bellucci in a beautiful tropical island.
Do you see yourself in a relationship in the near future? Certainly yes. Chocolates or alcohol? Don’t have a sweet tooth but certainly have a metallic liver, so I’ll go with alcohol! On Valentine’s day, you will be? Dupree to all my friends in a relationship. Your first love? Back in the fifth grade when things were puppy! Facebook or twitter? None! Five years down the line, you will be? Five years older and five times wiser! You live by the quote? “It doesn’t matter where you come from, what matters is where you’re going”

20 PICKUP lines NOT to use! FOR THE MEN Pickup lines are very cheesy and entirely overrated. Yet, for some reason, guys still love to try them out on unsuspecting gals. If I had a rupee for every bad pickup line I have overheard in a bar, well let’s just say I would be pretty rich by now. The only purpose of a pickup line should be to to start the conversation with a girl, and by the way there are thousands of other much more effective ways to do that. Pickup lines are great for sharing a laugh with friends and should be really only be used for that. Anyone who tells you otherwise obviously doesn’t understand the art of the pickup. So guys don’t overdo it. Bad pickup lines are a big turnoff. As much as you want to impress the girl, bad lines are sure to jeopardize your impression. Who knows that may just be the reason you lucked out on your dream crush. But we are here to help. We have with us the twenty pickup lines that you simply should avoid. Be the simple kind, not the arrogant. And remember, never ever try these lines.

I am a raindrop and I am falling for you. Haha. Hahahaha. Well getting back, do you see her rolling on the floor laughing? Now you think you have a good sense of humor? Haha again.

Hey Girl, what’s up? Guess what? It’s your lucky day. Out of all the girls here, I picked you to talk to. Blehh! Did you never know that overconfidence is the best piss-off for the ladies? You did not? Well then. Now you know. Don’t!

Remember me? Oh that’s right. I have only met you in my dreams. Oh well then boy! How sweet of you. Why don’t you keep dreaming then? Yes. That’s what she is probably going to say back.

You are blocking my way. I need to go. I don’t know you but I think I know you already. You are plainly making her feel uneasy boy! Drop it!

Hi I am Mr. Right. Someone said you were looking for me. Wow. Thank you so much the man of my dreams! I feel so lucky. SLAP! (The slap will hurt Yes) Can I buy you a drink or do you just want the money? If you want not just the girl but her entire gang to beat you up, go ahead with this line. Good luck with the medication that should follow. You must be tired because you have been running on my mind the whole day. How many times have we come through this? Doesn’t this belong to the last generation? Leave it there then uncles!

Do you believe in love at first sight or should I walk by again? Hello? Are you rehearsing for a classic theatre audition? If you really plan to go with this, the girl will probably ask you to walk again. And again. And again. (well you get the picture) walk on all your life for all she cares!

I love papaya. Text By: Bartika Rai Photo By: Sworup Ranjit
“What do you think?” She asks me, with twinkling eyes. It is a white gown, backless, with the straps that are supposed to hang on your neck in a weird sort of a way. Still it can make the girls look amazing. Weird extremes. I think about the other times when she has worn jaw dropping designs before. I remember that one time at our school reunion. I was reluctant to attend the reunion, it was only because Sam completely forced me to. Oh, how awkward the party was! To see some people extremely well off, few still lost. I even heard Shimali… “Hello?” I am pulled back to the purple walled room that has a double bed. I can see her expression has changed. She is angry now. She is angry.
the air. She teases me, and runs away, shouting and laughing on the top of her lungs. She is beautiful. Yoozan. Her name is Yoozan. Kathmandu was still clean when we fell in love. While we witnessed the century go by, we held hands and looked at the sky, trying desperately and wishing that our life were a fairytale which it wasn’t. A new century, a new decade, with a million wishes and strong hopes that died down with the villain called time. Life seemed perfect. There we were, living like two people taken out from a pretty love story, laughing, teasing and young. We were crazy. We were in love. We got married.
“Yes?” I manage to utter this one word.
The vibrating ringtone in my phone brings me back. I answer in a frenzy, “Yes I am coming home.” Yoozan sounds restless at the other end. I walk towards my car in no hurry. No hurry. Life is short.
Yes What? Yes Why? And the 3W and the 1H. I can see her shut the door in a fury. Lately, such rows are common with us. She smiles at me, I am lost. I don’t smile back and BAM! As I hear the building’s silence and try listening to the air, I notice the white dress lying on the ground. I reach it and pick it up, with all my might. It might get dirty.
Yoozan does not scold me. She has baked her unique cake for the dessert. It is my favorite, she knows. We eat together, in a huge dining table. With occasional ticks and tocks of the clock on the wall and rare sound of the forks on our plates, the silence seems to be turning into an intolerable noise. I try to look at her from the corners of my eyes. She looks pretty.
In Kathmandu, 7.30 in a wintry evening is a good time for you to hide out in the darkness. I check Pink Floyd in my ears and walk around Patan. One round of young couples packs off while a few others come in. Laughter fills the air and the Chatpate bhaiyya is busy, like always. A happy couple walking in front of the museum area transport me back to the era of happiness. With the Great Gig, I see the darkness turn into grey, brown, purple and finally a bright yellow. It is a bright afternoon, I realize. As the picture becomes clearer, I see her laugh. I am chasing her in a pasture. Her laughter fills
“Do you want some water?” She asks, in her hushed down professional tone.

“No, Thank you.” I manage to reply instantly, at which she seems happy. She adds, “Does the cake taste good?” I remember when I was eight years old. Mom had taken us for a shopping day out. Me, my three other cousins and mom. I was wearing a blue woolen sweater, it was one of my favorites. We had eaten pretty looking cakes. I remember the colors perfectly, even now. White. Brown. Pink. It was one of those days in…
fiction
“Aadarsh!” I am brought back to the dining table. She has a sad face. I don’t recognize her. The air disturbs me. I cannot breathe. I try to fight the silence. I shiver, involuntarily. My vision blurs. I can sense a painful fluid enter me. In a distance I can see a sad face, now in a panic mode, shouting, calling names; names I have never heard before. They call me mad. And autistic. I sit inside a ward. I play Ludo with a few others. Over coffee sometimes, we discuss about the world. We have our own points on the political activism of the world. The staff here talk about their families sometimes. This reminds me of Yoozan. In the Fall of 2010, I discovered that Yoozan was cheating on me. It wasn’t unexpected, with my being diagnosed in 2008. Things got rough since way back. I remember the dates perfectly but mentioning them
here is not going to give me what I lost. I confronted Yoozan. I knew she was with another man. “Yoozan, these pictures?” I had asked. Although I had known all the while, I had prayed silently within me. The mantra was “Darling I know, but please do lie.” She did not lie. I wake up at exactly 5:53 in the morning. I have to note the timing down. Every day. While brushing, the brush does it’s up and down round for exactly 33 times and the goaround round for exactly 35 times. I have to wait for one minute before I eat any of my meals, it is my mark of gesture showing respect for the dead. I like things clean. I don’t like Durbarmarg. I like marshmallows. I like dogs. I love papaya. I love papaya.

YOUTH VIBE Text by: Bandhana Rai Photos by:$uzeeta Gurung
EXPRESSING YOUR THOUGHTS ON LOVVEEE AND V-DAY It’s the season of love yah all! So naturally on this issue of Navyaata’s Youth Vibe, we asked four teens their opinion on the infamous BGR(boy girl relationship) and Valentine’s Day. The replies we got were quirky and refreshing. Read on to find out if you can relate to their stories.
1. So V-day is fast approaching, do you think it is necessary to celebrate V-day?
2. Alright, then what is the most romantic moment in your entire life?
Sagun: I don’t think it is, but a must for a majority of the couples who take their special ones for granted.
Sagun: When we held hands accidentally on purpose. Everyone and everything seemed to just disappear in the background.
Sumitra: Yes, be it with a lover or a friend because we are usually tied down by work or school. So take advantage of this day. Besides, the world will be celebrating with you. Digambar: I agree with Sagun, I don’t think it’s a must, but for some people who are too engrossed in their everyday life, it will give them some pressure to do something special for their loved ones. Diwadeb: No, because I think it is an excuse for companies to make money selling roses and teddy bears and what not’s to gullible people. Plus, any day can be Valentine’s Day.
74
Sumitra: There is someone who wanted to be transparent to me and he has been keeping his promise ever since. Digambar: The first moment we created our pet names naturally (so cute!). Diwadeb: Honestly, I don’t have one….
Youth Vibe
3. What is your most ideal Valentine’s Day date? Sagun: A midnight walk through the foggy, mysterious Venice streets (nice).
Sumitra Rai
Sumitra: Spending the whole day in my room, on my bed and get to know him all over again-nothing sexual. Just breakfast in bed or a movie marathon. Digambar: I would want to take my girl on a midnight walk on the beach (I know it’s not possible here). Prior to that, a homemade dinner at the beach with a fab picnic basket, and end it with a boat ride under the stars- all in Paris! Diwadeb: Camping in the woods without any technology. Just you, your special someone and the stars. 4. Where would you recommend other teens to go for a date on V-day? Sagun: Go see the mountains at Mustang and search for Yetis (haha I wish you luck!). Sumitra: Venice would be an ideal date. Digambar: A candle light dinner date at a posh restaurant? Diwadeb: Anywhere as long as you guys get to spend the day together. 5. What would you want on V-day?
Digambar Rai
Sagun: A custom-made teddy bear necklace with pink diamantes’. Sumitra: Phoonjiayi. Digambar: Couple rings personally designed that has a hint of both of our character or what we both like. Diwadeb: A collection of original Harry Potter and/or Lord of the Rings DVDs 6. Would you rather be single or attached and why. Sagun: Single. I was born a free bird! Sumitra: Attached, I have found freedom being in a relationship too. Digambar: To be honest, single cause being in love is too much of a hassle and falling out of love is the worst. Diwadeb: Somewhere in the middle. I want the best of both worlds, ha-ha.

YOUTH VIBE 7. What is the best part of being in a relationship? Sagun: You know that there is someone you can lean on when the whole world seems to be against you.
Sagun Ghale
Sumitra: The other person will have the power to inspire and make you a better person, for him and especially yourself. Digambar: Knowing that there is someone who is willing to embrace both the good and the bad in you and a pillar of support for both whenever the going gets too tough. Diwadeb: The sense of security I guess? 8. Have you ever been dumped or done the deed? Sagun: That’s for me to know and you to find out… Sumitra: Been dumped, we were better off friends then in a relationship. Digambar: Never been dumped, but have dumped some before. It was a horrible experience but if it’s not meant to be, it’s not meant to be. Diwadeb: I’ve dated, but none of us did the dumping, we just fell apart. 9. Then would you rather be dumped or do the dumping? Sagun: I wonder about that myself… Sumitra: Dump, everyone knows the reason why. Digambar: I rather be dumped. Diwadeb: Be dumped, dumping is too much of a chore. 10. Lastly, your views on relationships in a nutshell? Sagun: They say the world is built for two. Sumitra: Don’t let LDR (long distance relationship) stop you from celebrating Valentine’s Day. Digambar: Be true to who you are and don’t change who you are for that someone, unless that aspect needs changing, drinking anger etc. Those will need a fix immediately. Diwadeb: Give each other space; don’t try to suffocate your partner.

I met an
angel
This is my first time in a taxi, I have only been on the outside asking for money.
I met an angel. Inside a tiny frame, her small dark indurate hands and huge bambi eyes blinked with innocence. She came in the form of a seven year old girl. Her most conspicuous feature was her blinding smile. (Now, I have seen many smiles in my lifetime, but that little girl’s outshines all of them). She was a joy to watch. When she walked she did not just walk, she skipped with ebullience. You did not have to ask her if the doll that we bought for her made her happy, she expressed it physically. It was in the twinkle in her eyes and mostly the toothy smile that lit up her entire tiny face. 80

Make a Wish
“How can it be so pretty? :)”

Sabila, in the starting of the day.

1
The happy three.
e met the three walking along the streets of Thamel when we stopped them and asked if we could make some of their little wishes come true; Sabila Katum the mother, Manjul Katum the elder son and Sanjila Katum the little angel. Sabila was a little hesitant at first and watched us with wary eyes as we explained the 101s of our monthly Make A Wish column. After comprehension washed over the three of them, Manjul the more outgoing of the two siblings instantly jumped and yelled. His mother too nodded her head in agreement; while Sanjila, the meekest of them all, shuffled her feet and smiled. After their nods, we sped to D.S Collection in a taxi. It was amazing to see that something so natural as taking a taxi could bring excitement to the kids. Manju was literally bouncing on his seat as he clutched the window of the taxi and exclaimed, “This is my first time in a taxi, I have only been on the outside asking for money.” If Manju was hyperactive, Sanjila was the polar opposite; she sat quietly on her mother’s lap. On asking what their wishes were, Sabila’s wish was humble, “One plate of dal and bhat”, she answered. Manjul on the other side, now already accustomed with everyone, had more ambitious wants. “A bicycle!” he exclaimed while his sister asked for a new pair of shoes and a toy car. Yes. A toy car, we were all puzzled. While, the two of them were escorted into the dressing room to change into their brand new clothes, I took the opportunity to question Sabila. Hailing from Janakpur, Sabila brought along with her a few clothes, her two children and hopes. Unfortunately, it turned out that those were not enough. She had to resort to begging at the streets of Thamel for a living. Although I was reluctant to, I asked her how much she made per day, “50 Rupees at the most”, she replied with sad gestures. If this was heart wrenching, the next question was even more so. I inquired about her husband and his whereabouts. Her eyes glistened and turned solemn, but she answered,” He left us five years ago.” Her stories kept on getting more tragic. I found out later that she had lost

her other son who was only four to a terminal illness. She wished she could have saved him, but she didn’t have the sufficient fund to do so. Now she worries that her other two children might suffer the same cruel fate. Both Manju and Sanjila are covered with winter chills, cuts and bruises all over their body. Luckily she gets them treated at a government hospital, where checkups are free. By the time we finished talking, Sanjila had stepped out of the dressing room in a pink flower patterned dress. She ran her tiny hands delicately through her new dress as if too much pressure could spoil the dress. All the girls immediately flocked around her like a swarm of bees “AAWH! She looks like a pretty little butterfly!” Look like a pretty little butterfly she did indeed. After her brother joined us in his new clothes, they were fed mo:mo and chowmein and we were ready to leave. At that moment, one of the salesgirls came running towards Sanjila and thrust a mini stuffed toy in her hands and hugged her goodbye. Sanjila thanked her with her trademark shy smile. First we went to buy Sanjila a pair of new shoes, a set of dolls and a mini toy car, and then it was off to hunt for a bicycle. While trudging our way to find the items, Sanjila was merrily skipping, I couldn’t help myself from smiling. Along the way Manju shrewdly changed his mind,” Couldn’t you guys buy me a bike instead?” Unfortunately, that wish is way over our price range; we will leave that for Santa to fulfill, eh? The day was rounded off by filling their stomachs with a warm dal and bhat. Before leaving, Sabila shook our hands as her way of thanking us. Honestly, I felt unworthy of their gratitude, I did not do much. But that day when I walked back home, I was happy I had learned. I was surprised to actually learn that a thing as small as that could be so big for them. I was happy. FALGUN 2 0 6 8

Cuppas
Everybody should believe in something. At Cuppas we believe we have another best cup of coffee.
The city of Kathmandu has a reputation for a lot of things, one of the latest addition being the coffee hype (thanks to winter). However, an average coffee drinker here in Kathmandu is still satisfied with the sub-par coffee that the average coffee joint ever so happily pumps out. For the coffee lovers who want only the best, ‘Cuppas’ is the place to be. Cuppas is a brand new coffee shop at Putalisadak, found and run by a dynamic duo cousin, who take women power quite seriously. Prashakta and Yuki Poudyal take their job very seriously. Their objective as they state is not just to brew coffee but also ideas in mind of their customers. The founder duo, Yuki Poudyal adds, “I want this to be a space for creative coffee people.’ Looking at the variety of customers it holds, you cannot help but agree. The moment you walk into Cuppas, the smell of the fresh grounded coffee beans sends your senses into an overdrive. It will not be an overstatement to say that you might feel like you have entered another world, away from the hustle and bustle of the life in Katmandu - you really cannot help but smile. As you step in you are greeted with young and friendly Baristas wearing funky Barista T-shirts (almost flaunting interesting coffee terminologies). Turn to the right; you can see eccentric artsy walls and a space filled with young 84 Navyaata • FALGUN 2 0 6 8

professionals, out for a quick bite or informal meetings. But a more chilled setting can be found towards the other side, which is usually occupied by young people in groups or alone; strumming their guitars, creating music, working with their laptop or reading a book from the Cuppas collection. Even though there are a million reasons to smile, one of the favorite must be when you get together with a gang of good friends at a regular junction, which becomes your life’s little escape pod. Cuppas is all that and more. With the availability of high speed wi-fi internet connection, Cuppas visitors have the perfect place to work away from work. So, go ahead, order that café latte and the ice-cream brownie, and sit back relax - take a book that you’ve been meaning to finish, or catch up with those long lost friends on facebook!!! Or, my favorite - watch people and go have a chat if you think they or you can use the company!!! Cuppas brings all sorts of people together - the local artists, aspiring musicians, big and long shot businessmen, lost travelers and even the noisy group of college students. So, the next time you are out searching for a place to go, go to Cuppas; smile, if you aren’t smiling already! And who knows, you might meet your future business partner or even your soul mate, better yet, you might find both in one!!!

The Woman in Black
Miss U
This Means War
Genre: Horror
Genre: Romance, Drama
Genre: Comedy
Cast: Daniel Radcliffe, Ciaran Hinds, Liz White, Janet McTeer, Alisa Khazanova, Tim McMullan, Roger Allam, Daniel Cerqueira, Shaun Dooley, Mary Stockley, Cathy Sara, David Burke, Victor McGuire, Lucy May Barker
Cast: Dilip Rayamajhi, Varun SJB Rana, Namrata Shrestha
Cast: Chris Pine, Tom Hardy, Reese Witherspoon
With a tag-line of “everyone misses someone someday”, the film is a triangular love story between the characters Sanjh, Sakshyam and Jasmine - two guys and a girl studying abroad. The star cast includes Namrata Shrestha as Jasmine, Dilip Rayamajhi as Sakshyam, Sujata Sitaula and others and the film introduces Varun SJB Rana as Sanjh. This movie is set to release in QFX on 17th February 2012.
This spy-themed romcom centers on a love triangle and will most likely focus on mature relationships and what can happen when lies and betrayal get thrown in the mix. Two CIA agents (Chris Pine and Tom Hardy) who are also best friends discover that they’re dating the same woman (Reese Witherspoon). Neither one is willing to bow out gracefully, which means they end up going head to head to be her one and only. Expect some violence (much of the slapstick variety), language, and adult content.
When a friendless old widow dies in the seaside town of Crythin, a young solicitor is sent by his firm to settle the estate. The lawyer finds the townspeople reluctant to talk about or go near the woman’s dreary home and no one will explain or even acknowledge the menacing woman in black he keeps seeing. Ignoring the towns-people’s cryptic warnings, he goes to the house where he discovers its horrible history and becomes ensnared in its even more horrible legacy. This movie is set to release in QFX on 17th February 2012.
