Not being able to walk and feeling helpless is very hard to adjust to. It is easy to fall prey to the lowered expectations of people. There are a few who buck the trend. We bring you the inspiring story of how a person overcame an extreme, life-disrupting accident and managed to find fulfilling new life directions.

Be inspired/ Prabeen Shrestha For months after his accident, Prabeen Shrestha felt anguish every morning as he awoke to the reality of his accident and and knew what kind of day he was facing. Lesser individuals would have long given up and resigned to their disability. After all when one is confined to the wheel chair, it is very easy to blame fate. But not Prabeen. He has not let his spinal injury come in the way of his career or even his personal life and this trait is what makes someone who can ignite inspiration in the strong and the weak alike. Born on 23 September 1978 in Paknajol, Kathmandu, Prabeen Shrestha intended to be a musician. He lived in a large joint family that consisted of his uncles, aunts and cousins. He always traveled to and forth between Kathmandu and Nepalgunj, thus, he changed schools frequently. In the hubbub of a joint family and short-term friendships, Prabeen found solace in music and was deeply immersed in it. He completed his SLC in the year 2050 AD then went on to finish his I.Com 2nd year in 2053. Prabeen has dabbled in many aspects of music. He sings, he plays, he has been a member of a few bands and he has also worked in the technical aspects of music production. He has been able to combine his creative urges to the need for having a successful career. He now runs

In his small office in Baluwatar, he adds finishing touches and provides creative edges to all the music videos that come there for editing. Prabeen vividly remembers the incident of October 4, 1997 when he succumbed to spinal cord injury. He was casually hanging out with his friends. All of a sudden, a gang war erupted and he was stabbed at the back. He was rushed to the hospital. Sadly, his spine was badly injured and he has had to commute on his wheelchair since. “For two months I thought I would recover fully and that I would be able to walk soon. However, that was not to be and that realization was the most painful episode of my life. I never recovered; I entered a dark phase and went into depression. I thought my life was over as all my dreams and aspirations were crushed”, shares Prabeen.

The organization commenced 2 months ago and it aims to provide professional skills to the differently abled. “Every person has a different talent and I want to rear that talent in them.” says Shrestha. He along with five of his like-minded friends aim to make a difference in the lives of people with spinal cord injury. They even ponied up the funds required to run the organization. They will look for outside funding soon. Music is a big passion of Prabeen’s life. He has been involved in music from his school days. Since he spent a lot of his energy and time in music, he decided to pursue it professionally and thus started his own production house. Apart from editing, he also makes music videos, documentaries and graphic designs. He started his journey of musical career after that fateful incident which led him to decide that he should turn his passion into a career. Earlier he took music classes from a tutor who came to his house to teach guitars. “A person who can walk can go anywhere and learn but I was unable to do that. Fortunately my teacher was kind enough”. He was also a member of a high school band Ionica that performed only on live occasions then later a member of the band Tantra. Sadly the other band mates have left for foreign countries; however, they will be releasing an album soon. “We have already worked on 6 songs. Now there are two more to be recorded.” informs Prabeen. He himself is releasing a solo album pretty soon and is quite excited about it. Despite his many achievements, Prabeen is very humble. He still sees himself as learning music and editing. He is always voracious for knowledge. He constantly updates and learns new techniques through the internet.

If you really try, no adversity will stop you from being good in whatever you desire to do. I challenged myself and my injury’s limitations.” Prabeen is blissfully married to his wife Saloni Shrestha. “Saloni and I met through mutual friends and our mutual love for music created a spark in us,” he shares. Saloni used to sing very well and he, on the other hand was set on releasing an album. Their love soon led Saloni to elope with him and five years later, they are very happy and the couple is blessed with a son Swopnil Shrestha. Prabeen attributes a lot of his success and his ability to overcome the adversities in life to his bedrock – his wife and his family. “Through the love and support of my family, I found the courage to fight my injury. There are not many real life inspiring figures like Prabeen Shrestha who have accomplished a lot despite the hand fate has dealt them. Prabeen cites his greatest achievement as winning the award of the Best Editor for the song , ‘Malai Angalideu’ by Sabin Rai. He was also nominated for the title of best graphics for Subash Thebe’s new song. “It was the first time I got nominated and you cannot fathom the joy I experienced”, he says. Meanwhile he will always enjoy doing what he loves the most: composing and editing music videos which itself is a great achievement. He hopes of taking the Nepali musical scenario to greater heights with better use of technical knowledge and skills.

Every Tuesday, Vidushi worships at the Ganesha temple at Naxal Vidushi Rana needs no introduction. A confident and dynamic person, she is the managing director of Zentech International, a telecommunications company and a mother of two children. In addition, she also has a large circle of friends that she is regularly in contact with. Somehow she manages her business life, social life and family life with elan. How does she do it all? Navyaata spent an afternoon with her to find out the answers and to find out what it means to be the Vidushi Rana. There was a touch of apprehension in our minds before we met Vidushi. Afterall we had heard so much about her. But her warm personality and friendly demeanour quickly put our fears to rest. Vidushi Rana is the personification of grace and elegance. And she manages her hectic life without much of a complaint.
“She believes that there is a supreme power somewhere that governs everything. ” Vidushi has no regrets in life. She believes in destiny and she thinks it was fate indeed that led her to meet her husband, industrialist Amir Rana. Hers was a love at first sight and after much convincing, her parents let her marry at a tender age of 19. She obtained a private degree from Shanker Dev Campus and then went on to work as the head of marketing at Kumari Bank for 6 years. Vidushi has recently cut back on her business priorities to provide ample time to her growing kids, Shivalika, 12 and Suryaditya, 5. While Vidushi laments the busy schedule of her husband, she does love to accompany him on his business trips abroad. She loves to travel and feels that vacations are the best times for a family to come together. She makes it a point to go on a holiday at least once every year to beautiful destinations around the world.

Working out with a personal trainer
Weights before starting a series of cardio Vidushi starts her day by waking up at 9 AM as she doesn’t have to abide by hectic office hours. She is very particular about exercising regularly and gets to the gym by 10:30. Her gym session consists of a series of cardio and zumba with her personal trainer. After the gym, she goes back home for a quick shower. On Tuesdays, she worships at the Ganesh temple at Naxal. She says that she is religious but not a pious devout. Vidushi is very close to her family and in-laws. Family comes first for her. While growing up, Vidushi was very close to her grandmother who taught her a lot of lessons about life. Her grandmother was her confidante and her best friend. She calls herself lucky in having great in-laws who she shares a great rapport with. They were very supportive of her career and, in fact, lent her a hand in raising her kids.
Lunching at Koto After her daily workout, Vidushi typically goes out to lunch with her friends or family members at different venues around town as ‘she isn’t the breakfast kind of person’. She is very familiar with the different restaurants and eateries around town. According to her, lunching with friends is the best way to keep in touch with her large circle of friends. On this day, she takes her mother for Japanese food at Koto Restaurant. After lunch, she usually picks up her children from school. As her daughter was on a trip to Bangkok for a school project, she went to pick her son Suryaditya from Mother Care International. Vidushi and her son then go to visit her brother, Vivek Upadhyay at the Beatification Boutique at Durbar Marg to look at newly arrived exclusive Sarees

and Lehengas. Vidushi loves to shop and is a coveted customer at a number of high-end shops in Kathmandu and abroad. She tries on a few Sarees at Beatification while Suryaditya happily munches on KFC fries and burgers. Her kids love the City Center mall. Because it is so close to her home (it is in the same neighborhood) her kids spend most of their leisure time at the mall, especially the gaming arcade. Watching Vidushi deftly handle her kid, you wonder whether she is a friend or a supervisor. She spends a lot of time with her kids and reads bed time stories to them every night before putting them to bed. A self proclaimed Bollywood cinema buff, she also admits that she is among the first to go watch as soon as a new movie hits the theaters. So after a fun-filled day, she bids us goodbye in the evening as she happily enters Big Cinemas in hand with her son to watch a movie. Trying out a saree at Beatification Boutique

What you didn’t know about Vidushi Rana: Studied at Saint Mary’s School and Baldwin’s Girls (a convent in Bangalore) Married at the age of 19. Reads a lot of books. Very romantic at heart. Believes in the saying, ‘what goes around comes around’. Goes for a vacation with her family once in a year. Reads story books to her children every night before the go to sleep. Jems Pradhan and Sabina Pradhan Tied the knot: 1994 No. of Kids: 2 daughters
Singer, lyricist and composer Jems Pradhan is undoubtedly a multitalented person. In his thirteen years of stint at the music industry he has given innumerous hits and taken many singers’ career to new heights. People still hum his nineties hit “Bhai Gayo Ni Jau” and more recent “Aaideu Aaideu”. More than a decade has gone by since he first performed and yet his devotion to the art hasn’t decreased a bit. He spends more than eight hours in his studio every day creating music, editing videos and composing tunes for commercials. But regardless of his workload, he always makes it a point to devote time for his family, a quality much appreciated by his wife. Jem’s better half Sabina is his college sweetheart. A mother of two, Sabina is as busy as her husband. She is the general director of Aviation Grounds School and Placement Consultancy. Sabina is a cheerful person ( no wonder Jems fell for her). The apple of Jem’s eye, Sabina says theirs was love at first sight which just took time to confess. Although classmates since school, it was only after joining college that Jems and Sabina started dating. After four years of seeing each other behind their parents’ backs, both felt the need to confide their love to their families. The reaction was far from what they had expected; both sides didn’t approve of their children’s relationship. That however didn’t stop the couple from tying the knot some sixteen years ago at the age of twenty one. Their wonderful love story started in school, bloomed in college and finally made it to the altar.

“Put on your shoes,” says Sabina to Jems as we are getting ready for the photo shoot. Jems looks hesitant and replies, “Hya! Photo ma khutta ni aaunchha ra? (Are the feet going to come in the photo too?) Sabina frowns and finally Jems gives in and puts on his shoes. Both smile after that. “We are always like this- we argue about small things but we can’t be angry with each other for too long,” she admits. What do you like about each other? Jems – There isn’t anything particular that I like about her. I
How has life changed after marriage? Sabina- Life automatically changes after marriage. Before

wish he continues to love me the way he does and keep giving me and our daughters his time. Jems- I want to tell her that I love her and will always do. I know at times I get too engrossed in work but that doesn’t mean I don’t care about her.
Who makes up first? Sabina: It depends upon who made the mistake. When
either of us realizes who has been wrong, we end up apologizing to each other. We are not one of those couples who fight and don’t speak for days. What is the best gift you flattered each other with? Sabina- He keeps showering me with gifts so there are
many favorites. But recently, he gave me a diamond necklace and I was bedazzled. Jems- I don’t remember. I mean, she has given me so many gifts but I don’t remember it now. We stay together and she gives me presents and it lies around the house. So, it just feels like we are handing our gifts to ourselves. Any song that reminds you of each other? Jems- A song called ‘Tu hi rey’ makes me think of her every
time I hear it.

The Shoemaker To The Stars By Akash Rajbhandari
symbol of consolidated craftsmanship and artistic innovation, Salvatore Ferragamo, today, reigns as one of the world’s most important and best known ‘Made In Italy’ Luxury Brands. A master craftsman, Salvatore Ferragamo is best known to have broken away from conventional styles, exploring not only innovative designs, but also the technical structure of the shoe. Salvatore Ferragamo made his first pair of shoes for his sister at the tender age of nine. It was then, that the young Salvatore decided that he had found his true calling. With so much passion to learn about the know-hows of shoe making, Ferragamo went on to acquire the basic skills of shoe production while he apprenticed at a local cobbler in Bonito, his hometown. He, then, moved to the city of Naples to study for a year and came back to Bonito to open a small shoe store in his parent’s home. It was in the year 1914 that Ferragamo made his voyage to Boston to work in a cowboy boot factory. Given the shoe enthusiast Ferragamo was, he worked only briefly in the factory and made a move towards Santa Barbara, California. The years that he spent there aided him to fully understand the technical aspects and procedures of shoe production. He, then, made his final move to Hollywood where he opened a shop for repair and made-to-measure shoes. His original and inventive designs immediately caught the attention of many famous customers which included the likes of Sophia Loren, Audrey Hepburn and Gloria Swanson, the Duchess of Windsor. His creations became prized items and he was even nicknamed “Shoemaker To The Stars”, a title that satisfied him just a little. He could not understand why his shoes pleased the eyes yet hurt the foot of the wearer. So, to find a solution to this dilemma, Ferragamo started his journey of learning once again by moving to the University of South California to study human anatomy there. After spending 13 years in the US, Salvatore Ferragamo moved back to Italy in 1927 to open his own company, Ferragamo, in Florence and continued designing shoes for the wealthiest and most powerful women of that century. The Maharani of Cooch Behar, Eva Peron and Marilyn Monroe were all loyal clients to Ferragamo. But, unfortunately, with the Great Depression of the 30’s, Ferragamo filed for bankruptcy in 1933 mainly due to bad management and economic pressures. Ferragamo, nonetheless recovered from the fall, and by 1938, he was in a position to buy the Palazzo Spini Feroni, one of the greatest palaces of Florence, which now houses the company’s flagship store and museum.
Ferragamo flourished well after the World War II, expanding the workforce to 700 craftsmen and producing 350 pairs of hand-made shoes a day. The shortage of leather and quality skin during the war period encouraged Ferragamo to explore new materials such as that of cork, crotchet, plaited raffia, rubber, fish skins, felt and hemp, which although unconventional alternatives, proved to be very successful. His designs were brilliant in concept and craftsmanship, creating many unique and elegant styles. 7th August 1960 saw the death of Ferragamo but by then, Ferragamo had already created over 20,000 styles of shoes and registered 350 patents, including the oriental mules with a unique pointed toe, the platform shoes and the infamous “invisible shoe”, which was produced with clear nylon uppers and black suede heels. Using modern production techniques that took advantage of technology to improve output, Ferragamo, throughout his lifetime, created many hand-tomeasure shoes that delivered quality, durability and style. Today, Ferragamo’s legacy lives as one of world’s finest Italian luxury company that not only produces exquisite shoes but luxurious bags, eyewear, silk wear, accessories, watches, a ready-to-wear clothing line and best-selling perfumes. With about 2600 employees and a network of 550 stores around the world, Ferragamo, particularly, seems to be doing the best in Asia with a long list of famous Asian clienteles such as Zhang Ziyi, Gong Li, Yue Li, Priyanka Chopra, Ang Lee and King Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuk of Bhutan. In fact, 27% of the company’s revenue in 2005 came from Japan. Ferragamo’s best known for its ‘Gancino’ decoration, the ‘Vara’ patent ballet pump, the ‘Salvatore’ bag, the use of patchwork and its bestselling fragrances which are a favorite among many A-Listers and it recently introduced a fresh line named ‘My Ferragamo’, a new addition to the brand which appeals mainly to the younger generation. Don’t blow dry your hair for too long, it will make your hair look dry and dull. Rather than using the iron rod curlers, try using spring roll curlers as they won’t damage your hair. To add volume to your hair, try the following trick: unclip the front section of your hair and starting at the front of your head, place the round brush under your hair and pull the section straight up and then roll the hair back towards your scalp.

Items needed: Comb, Spring Roll Curlers, Hair Spray, Hair Mousse and Hair clips. Gently comb your hair and part your hair into different sections. Trim the hair. Then apply hair mousse on your strands taking little sections at a time. After that, set the spring roll curlers to all sections of your hair and leave them for next 25 minutes. If your hair is wet, then dry your hair with a blow dryer. Take out the curlers and set the hair with a hair spray. Finally, you’ve got the ‘Winter Slice’ look!

ore than 1,000 children are infected with HIV every day, and of these more than half will die because of a lack of access to HIV treatment. In addition, millions more children every year are indirectly affected by the epidemic as a result of the death and suffering caused in their families and communities. Children affected by AIDS are the most unfortunate victims of AIDS. They have contracted a disease through no fault of theirs. This AIDS day, we pay tribute to those families and children bravely confronting the HIV and AIDS epidemic in Nepal and around the world, and to those frontline workers whose determined efforts are changing the narrative of AIDS orphans and vulnerable children on the ground. We publish an article by Ansha Krishnan an Aussie student who has been volunteering at Manisha Singh Punarjeevan Niwash (MSPN) centre for several months.

Priyanka Chand
Despite her infectious laugh and ever-smiling mentality, there lies a family history disheartening to say the least. Priyanka Chand, a five year old girl friendly and loving in nature, was admitted to MSPN on the 20th of July 2010. Born in Kanchanpur, her family moved to New Delhi, due to financial strain. Her father is an alcoholic and her mother passed away one month before admission to MSPN. Unlike most of the other five year olds, Priyanka has proved herself to be very bright and has excelled since the time of her admission at MSPN. Currently, MSPN is in search of a sponsor to help provide her with an education other than the informal education being received at MSPN. An article was published in Republica newspaper on November 3rd 2010, stated that HIV infected children cannot be admitted to the elite schools of Kathmandu. However, some public schools under very strict guidelines accept with hesitation. Today I asked the children what they wanted to be when they grow up. A frenzy of smiles and broken teeth looked back at me with hopeful eyes and replied,
In the time spent volunteering at MSPN, I’ve come to realize that HIV should not be anything to be discriminated against. Walking to work every day with the mindset of reaching out to the children and mothers on a deeper level brings me satisfaction that I never would have gained elsewhere. As I walk through the door I am greeted by a whirl of smiling faces tugging my shirt and hugging my leg calling out “Dhi dhi, Dhi dhi!” Innocence such as theirs’ cannot be undermined. Innocence such as theirs’ is nothing but justified. I came to Nepal not knowing what to expect, however being with the children and mothers these past two months has not only allowed me to reap the benefits of fulfillment but has also opened my eyes a little wider. Although two months can seem like two days, being at MSPN has made me feel like I’ve made a difference; perhaps only miniscule but all it takes is a “tiny ripple of hope” to eventually build a future that will make their dreams a reality. “ Each time a person stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, these ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppressionand resistance.” Robert F. “Doctor, teacher, vet”! Why should these children be inhibited to live up to their aspirations merely based off societal stigma?
The infection of HIV/AIDS is relatively large in Nepal. Approximately 16,262 people suffer from HIV/AIDS, therefore HIV awareness is key in helping reduce societal stigma. I first met Priyanka Chand at MSPN. Established in 2006 under the management of Friends of Needy Children (FNC), the NGO focuses on the welfare of women and children (aged 10 years and below) by providing a transitional home for up to 18 children, as well as food, medication, psychological counseling and an informal education. The children and mothers are first admitted to hospital and are later referred to the centre to receive treatment for an average of 3 months. The non- profit org anization also promotes HIV awareness to families who live in rural Nepal and are unaware of the disease. Solely depending on voluntary income, the centre works to prevent negative perceptions towards people who are infected with HIV and also strives to improve their quality of life when they leave. send us your feedback at editor@nav yaata.com

Unaware of the circumstances of HIV infection, they live life oblivious to their surroundings. Brought up in a society where abstinence is heavily rooted in cultural values, a child who is infected with a disease transmitted through unprotected sexual intercourse is frowned upon. So the question arises, are these innocent children who play and live life at ease, subjected to a future of turmoil and resent?

A class full of ebullient students. Excited frame of mind. Part chatter. Part quiet. “What do you aim to be in th future?” “A doctor.”
What do you want to be?
Enter your memory lane. Yes we know you have been part of this scene before. We have been, just the same! With growth in technology however, there appears a larger option in the career choices that we can make. Apart from the stereotypical bankers, doctors and engineers, are there people taking up other professions? How many people that we know have chosen to become artists, social activists or even travel guides? How many are willing to go against their families and pursue professions of their choice? Is money the “only” thing that motivates this generation? Or is one career more than that? This December, Navyaata team held an interactive program at Lincoln College, Samakhusi to get a first-hand hear on what this generation had to say. They participated enthusiastically and were very straightforward on how they viewed their career options.

Majority of the youth stated that they would like to become high-earning professionals though not necessarily doctors or engineers. Most of them weren’t sure what they wanted to become although they held a certain idea of their careers. Since a majority of them had taken up Hotel and Hospitality Management as their major subjects, many of them wanted to work in the field of tourism as they realized the vast scope in the area that Nepal beheld.
What do you think are the top three career choices in Nepal? Many stated that becoming a politician had the best scope in Nepal in terms of money and popularity, while ironically stating that corruption was what the politicians fed on.

Business was the second on the discussion table although some argued that Nepal holds no scope for investment. For example, if a person opens a new business; they argued; the very next day he is flooded with people asking for charities and donations. Interestingly a few refuted that argument. In their views, business has a lot of potential inspite of those petty risks! One example they stated was that of rice mills, where the owners can collude to form a carteling and set whatever price they please. The ‘janta’ will be compelled to buy no matter how high the price is.
Engineering was also discussed mainly because people are simply fascinated by the subject and moreover, with new housing colonies and residential apartment springing up every few months, civil engineers hold a lot of scope in the country.
Tourism was the third option. Nepal is blessed by nature and is rich in flora

Money was unanimously voted the most important by the students. Everyone dreamt of earning a lot and living in the fast lane with shopping sprees, fast cars, a lot of clubbing and a lot of fun! Fame was considered important by a rough 20% as some dreamt of becoming famous and gaining a lot of admiration. Satisfaction was rated the least important, only 10% thought that being satisfied in your job is important. They didn’t seem to realize that a good working environment and satisfaction in job are two important things that measure a person’s productivity and efficiency <courtesy; our Business classes from school!>
What do your parents want you to become? How do you cope with parental pressure? What most parents wished for their children contradicted with their children’s wishes. Parents wanted their children to pursue careers that are respected in the society. But in doing so, they mostly ended up disregarding their own children’s repulsiveness towards the career choices they were forced to take up.

However, the situation has changed now that more and more of the youths are going against their parent’s wishes and giving their passion a voice. Here is what a few of the students had to say:
Rajina Shrestha: “I have my own wishes and desires and I am not a submissive person to give in to my parents’ authority if they are wrong. My parents want me to become a doctor but I’m least interested in medicine. They know that” Rafaa Khan: “My parents want me to
become a doctor but I am interested in banking and fashion designing.” Interested in two professions that are poles apart in nature, Rafaa has always dreamt of working in a bank and dealing with customers and fashion also inspires her.

How do you view the job market scenario in Nepal? The job market is very tumultuous mainly because of the insurgency and changing government. But slowly the situation is improving and people are getting jobs. The main problem lies in the fact that people are not getting jobs that their abilities and educational degrees would qualify them for; rather they end up having to work below their abilities. Hemanta Singh further stated that the rich people are becoming richer and the poor, poorer. Further the students added that the remuneration is not enough to sustain a living in the hyperinflationary market. Thus we came to an end of a profound discussion. And yes it was a moment of marked satisfaction when we realised the seriousness with which this generation takes its future. You do not NEED to be a doctor! You do not NEED to become an engineer! Forced opinions are long lost. Once upon a time, every one of us had the same career aim and that made one wonder “if everybody ends up becoming a doctor, what good will it be!” Make it your choice and a sensible one! You live only once! We want to listen to you. Next issue, this section could be yours!

Friend or thief? Old School days, well it is fun to talk about them once in a while, isn’t it? This was way back when I was still in my sixth grade in school. There was this girl called Bibha. She was tall and pretty and was already quite famous in the school, if not in the class. Two of us were really close friends; we used to sit together on the same bench in the class and used to share each other’s lunch. I was so fond of her that, once in a while I used to invite her at my place for lunch (on holidays) or for dinner (on weekdays). One day, ( It should have been one of the days when she came to my place for dinner) we were just talking and playing computer game in my room when I had to go to help my mother in the kitchen. I came out of the room and was about to get on the stairs when I thought, may be Bibha should come along with me instead of staying alone and bored in the room. As, I went back to my room, I saw Bibha standing, in front of my cupboard, which was now open and she was trying to find something. It took some time for me to register that I actually caught her stealing from my room. I shouted, “What are you doing with my cupboard being opened?” After that day, we stopped talking and looking at each other altogether. Rewati

The BOY IS MINE When I was in high school I had a really good friend. We were the best of friends and did everything together. You could say that we were inseparable. She was little shy and didn’t speak a lot. We loved partying and every Saturday would hang out at different clubs. On one such Saturday, we were at a club and she saw a cute guy. Since she wasn’t comfortable with asking him out, I thought I would help her by talking to him. I approached him and introduced the two of them. My friend, the introvert she is didn’t really talk to him. In the end I spoke more to him than her. Weeks passed and still she hadn’t really spoken to him. Whenever he would call she would get nervous and hang up. In the end he got tired of her behavior and stopped calling her altogether. It seemed like she didn’t care at all. A month passed and we were getting on with our lives. She didn’t talk about him at all. One day I received a call from him saying let’s hang out. Before I could answer, I asked my friend if it was okay. She said it was fine and told me to go ahead. So, I started dating him. It has been three years and I am now in a committed relationship with the guy. But my friend though initially said she didn’t mind at the time, stopped talking to me and whenever I would try to talk to her, she would always have excuses to hang up.

Who says only girls get harassed today? I know this is shameful, but I got harassed by one of my colleagues during work. We were out on field to a remote village besides Myagdi and because of that we all had to fit in a small room. That night, I had taken a few drinks and was a bit tipsy, so falling asleep became easy. But as I was about to, I felt someone touching me “there” and the next moment, she was on top of me pulling my head to kiss me on my lips! I tried pushing her away but the sips that I had enjoyed, my tries went to a waste. It was disgraceful and it was a kick in the teeth. I finally managed to push her away and left the room without a word. Out of all my colleagues, never thought Rekha would do this to me. Jatin Shrestha, 28
It was during my 10+2 days. I had to travel to my college in a local bus. As usual, the bus would not move until it was packed full. One day I was riding the bus back home. It was full and I was standing. This guy who must have thought he was a Romeo in the making sidled up close to me. He smiled but I didn’t acknowledge him. I have come across many sadak-chhaap Romeos to know his type very well. All of a sudden I felt him sticking close to my body and I felt his hand near my thigh. I couldn’t believe this was actually happening. He was trying to take advantage of the crowded bus. I just shouted at him and asked him why he had his hands on me so that everyone in the bus could hear me. He was shocked. He never thought I would actually do such a thing. Compass to the rescue
I had been a shy and reserved girl when I was a child (I believe I have overcome those antics of mine now!). My mother used to complain constantly about me being silent and not expressive, but I was just the way I wanted to be back then. One incident that still plagues me when I think about it now, is when this friend of my elder brother tried to touch me underneath my clothes. I was probably in my 3rd or 4th grade and that friend of my brother (whom I used to call Dai) had come to my place looking for my brother. But my brother was out with some other friends and mom and dad had also gone for some vegetable shopping in the nearby market. So I was at home all by me and when he came to know that I was alone, he smiled and asked me to lie on my bed. I still had no idea what he was trying to do but I just obeyed him, like I would do to my own brother. He then raised his hand and inserted it under my shirt; when I was about to start crying, we heard creaking sound of the gate. At once, he jumped and went to the door. I don’t what he said to my parents, but he had already left when I looked out through the window in my room. I told about it to my brother the next day and after that I never saw him again! This is my mother’s story than my own, that she told me few years back. The time was, some 20 years ago when my mother was still young and used to attend the college classes with her friends. If my father’s words are to be believed then, mother was very beautiful when she was young( and I believe she still is!) and guys used to fall for her instantly. But she was also known for her courage and wit. Once so happened that, my mother and her friends were returning home from a small outing after her classes in the college and it was already getting dark, when an old-looking man came in front of her from nowhere pinched her thighs and soon disappeared before she or her friends could realize what happened. The next thing was, they came the same route walking next day as if nothing had happened the previous day, expecting the man to come again. They had a plan. The man actually came towards them, that days as well, but mother already had a compass, as her weapon, ready in her hand. As he was about to pinch her again, she stabbed him so hard on his hand with the compass that the compass actually got stuck in his hand. He cried aloud and ran away like a mad bull! Shikha Thapa

Do not judge a book by its cover. Indeed! As I entered the studio to meet the band members of Gothica, I expected to meet people who were utterly utterly ‘gothic’. How wrong I was! Those people were perfectly normal - just like me, only more musical. And as the front man Prashant Shrestha introduced me to the others, I set my mind on having a fun fun time ahead! Having recently released their first song from their upcoming album, Gothica has firmly established itself in the Nepali metal music. Gothica started as a high school band and slowly took to the forefront of the Nepali underground music scenario---the swarming number of fans and supporting enthusiasts don't lie! With only Prashant Shrestha as the original founding member, Gothica has had a revolving door of musicians. “There is a constant change in the members as most of them go abroad for studying, so it is quite difficult adjusting to the new people." After a successful performance at the “Battle of the Bands” competition, they were able to find a stable sponsor and thus the band came to form. Gothica has come a long way from being just another high school band. The unique sound they produce have brought them a marked distinction among the metal bands in Nepal and won them many fanatic headjerking-supporters. I was quite surprised when I learnt that forming the band was not actually a dream, or ‘the plan’; all the members were metal fads, but it was only after actually coming across like-minded people that they came to form Gothica. They add that Nepali Music market isn’t exactly the place where they’d want to be commercial. “Most people expect soft rock and romantic songs, which we do not play. We are thus basically underground. The conventional mass is not our playground. They usually cannot bear to hear the music we play. But regardless, we continue. Metal music has been our passion and we would like to continue that”.

Fortunately for the members of the band, their families have been quite supportive. The only caveats that their families have put for their support are that they have to be mindful of their careers and their studies. “No drugs and no alcohol is what my parents urge”, laughs Bivesh. The band shares its most memorable moment as their performance in “Blast at Bar” at the House of Music. Even though all the members were crammed in the small space, they took the stage by storm. Prashant Shrestha even performed a ‘very memorable’ stage dive! Way to go! “The crowd response was really good, all of them were singing and head banging along,” they reminisce with satisfied looks on their faces. So raucous, that even the quiet member of the band, Animesh, got in the act. His hair got stuck in the guitars and it was quite a struggle to detangle it. The practices are usually held at Prashant Pratap Shah’s house and the guys always have fun while jamming. With most of the members as college students and even job holders, they all squeeze out at least a day in a week to practice. Extracting time that is suitable for all the members is difficult, but they cheekily reply that “bunking” has been a great solution. Cannot argue with that.

We might seem lighthearted but when it comes to practices and performances, each one of us becomes seriously serious.” Bartika adds. Listen to their original compositions, you will discover that Gothica is definitely here to stay. Inquired about what they will be doing 10 years down the line- “Reunited” everyone replies in a chorus. The camaraderie that the Gothica guys share is quite visible.

Dining with
The guys from Gothica enjoy hanging out together, usually at Thamel and Baneshwor, and love sharing their favorite food - Chicken Chilli - and the spicier the better. Maybe the exhaustion from shrilling at gigs and practices envelops them into gorging upto 4 plates of Chicken Chilli in one go! With Chef Keshav Shrestha, Navyaata brings out the recipe for this dish.
Chicken Chilli Ingredients: * Chopped chicken * Flour * Egg * Garam masala, salt and pepper * Diced capsicum, onions and vtomatoes * Tomato ketchup * Hot chilli sauce * Garlic leaves * Coriander
Preparation method: * Make a paste of flour and an egg. * Dip the chicken pieces in the mixture and fry them. * In another pan, put a little amount of oil and stir fry the tomatoes, onions and capsicums. * Add the fried chicken cubes in the vegetables, add the spices, tomato ketchup and hot chilli sauce. * Garnish with onion leaves and PREPARATION TIME: 20 minutes coriander.

Winter Safari: Chitwan
Thoughts of wrinkled crocodile skin still sends chills down my spine. The amazing experience of canoeing along the Rapti river brought us closer to them crocodiles. Chitwan is home to single horned rhinocerous, Bengal tigers, sloth bears, antelopes and any other animal you could possibly think of. There is more to Chitwan than just its great wildlife. One can experience the beautiful Tharu culture or soak in the sun lying in the beautiful Rapti beach. Chitwan is about 4 hours drive from Kathmandu. The main attraction of the area is the Chitwan National Park, which is also listed as one of world’s heritage sites. So, basically if you love nature and animals, you will definitely love Chitwan too.
Day 1
Day 2 This was the day of the Jungle Safari! When I think of our safari, it still makes me nervous. I am not at all an adventurous person. But it makes such a big difference when the person guiding you actually has a passion for what he is talking about. There wasn’t much that our guide didn’t know about the animals and plants in the national park. He would look into the distance and pronounce “There, by the three rocks, it’s a kingfisher, there can you see it?” He must have an most amazing eye sight, the way he could see a tiny bird so far away. We started the day with an elephant ride into the woods. Elephant trekking through the jungle is pretty relaxing (just a gentle sway rythmic to the gait of the elephant), until you come close to the burly beasts. Our mahout was quite a skillful navigator and took us away from the rest of the tourists into the area most likely to bring us closer to the animals. We rode in silence through the trees and were able to get up really close to the animals. We saw a number of animals, but nothing quite imprints my mind like that of when we first saw the rhinos! RHINOS!!!
After hours of singing our lungs out, we reached Chitwan. The image of clustered buildings and heavy traffic so prevalent in Kathmandu slowly faded from our memory. All around us were green deep forests and it was beautiful. Chitwan has developed a lot in the last few years. One has two options when visiting the park. Either staying inside the park grounds or ‘going cheap’ and staying in one of the resorts outside the park. Quite obvious where we stayed but our hotel turned out to be fantastic. No one should miss the Tharu culture in Chitwan. A newly opened Tharu museum gives visitors a good overview of the Tharu livelihood. After our jaunt in the Tharu village, we went back to our hotel and, to our delight, they had prepared a show for us. The Tharus, in their full cultural attire, danced to local songs. The dancers called out for us to tag along. Fascinated by their moves, we did! We copied their steps and laughed looking at each other mess up. It was a fitting end to a fun day.

Angry wild elephants: Just run.

elephants – they are massive! But that was no comfort to me. It was almost an hour before the adrenaline stopped pumping through my veins and by that time we had spotted monkeys, three types of deer and crocodiles. Our guide explained what we were meant to do in the case that we were on foot and met up with: Angry rhinos: Climb up the nearest tree or if you can’t manage to climb, then hide behind the tree trunk to confuse it. The rhinos have poor eyesight. If you can’t find a decent tree, weave in and out of the trees so the rhino can’t charge you. Angry sloth bear: Huddle in a group to look more threatening and sing a song. (seriously!) Angry Bengal Tiger : Pray for Mercy!

After our safari, I was a bit of a nervous wreck. I was happy to leave the beasties in the jungle and grasslands and get back to the safety of our hotel!
Day 3 They say you should save the best for the last. And so we planned to go to the elephant breeding centre. But it was somewhat of an anticlimax. It was sad to see sch gentle and huge animals in chain. But our spirits were uplifted when we saw baby elephants. There isn’t too many things in this world that are much cuter than a baby elephant. We also saw twin elephants. They were one of the only two twin elephants in the world. We then made a trip to Sauraha to see elephants bathe. Not long ago people were allowed to bathe with the elephants, but after a fatal incident that is now longer allowed. And I was quite happy to let go of that opportunity. watched the sun set. Three days of animals spotting in Chitwan turned out to be just perfect and a good way to rejuvenate ourselves from the hectic life of Kathmandu. The next day we boarded the Greenline bus bound for Kathmandu. We left with memories of the scary crocodiles, the giant elephants, the tank-like rhinoceros, the beautifully coloured peacocks and the green thick forest. Tharu Dance

In the wee hours of the morning, Dacoits dressed in masks and dramatic clothes showed up and robbed the two of us. Fortunately, they left the two bottles of whisky untouched. We were robbed. But we had the bottles to get us going. That has to be the wildest so far! Navyaata: What is your favourite drink? Nhyoo: I like milk coffee in the mornings

It is important to get away from it all but one needs to know how to relax; sometimes we stay at home all day without doing much, and we are still not relaxed. This is because we are thinking too much. Relaxation starts first and foremost with the mind- when the mind is at peace, the body follows. Most often, slowing down the pace of life, taking the time to do the more mundane tasks in life allow the mind to relax; getting a nice facial is one of these best ways for relaxation. But not all of us can afford to go to a Spa. So having an Ayurvedic facial party with a few girlfriends is a very good way to unwind, relax and have fun.

Cleanser: Neem and turmeric paste. Apply all over the skin and rinse.

Mask: Fresh cream, sandalwood, yellow mustard powder. Allow drying and rinse well.
Step four:
Steam: Hot water with few drops of essential oil. Lavender is best for de-stressing. If essential oil is not available you can boil water with some fragrant flowers such as rose petals and jasmine for little aromatherapy.
Step five:
Toner: Plain Rosewater is good. Dip the toner in a cotton ball and wipe face and neck using smooth, gentle upward strokes.
Step six:
Foot and Hand soak: In individual bowl soak the feet in warm water and apply foot scrub and massage slowly and rinse . Dry with towel. Let your guests sample their creations on their hands or let them take turns giving each other a hand scrub, massage and lotion treatment Try and make it a gossip free party- the whole idea of an

Pick fruits that the group likes. Create a beautiful fruit tray.
Roasted vegetable sandwiches:
Use seasonal vegetables such as squash, eggplant and tomatoes; marinate with some ghee, cumin and salt and pepper and sauté in a pan. For sandwiches, make a spread of some yogurt with crushed coriander and garlic leaves. Toast bread and slice in triangular shapes; add some spread and roasted vegetables. Delicious and healthy vegetable sandwich is ready.
Herbal tea:
Boil a pot of water with cinnamon, cardamom and some tulsi leaves. Put in a nice teapot, and while serving add some honey and lemon. Serve Water infused with mint, cucumber and rose petals.
End the day with 5 minute relaxing meditation.

y first ever cigarette tasted like a bowl full of hot air, hot Kathmandu air. A little bit of excitement, more of pollutants, wee bit sadness, thoraii strange and a whole lot of energy. The first time it made me cough, it inspired three drops of tears. I counted, I remember. And I forced them to stop. A sentiment abstract abducted me. Smell---unwelcoming. Smell--welcoming. As I stare at the cigarette butt I am about to turn into ashes, I realise I now understand you. People tell me you died because of a nicotine overdose. The echelon of rage I experienced never quite subsided. You should realise I hated you for opting nicotine over us. I was five. It made little sense. Exceedingly little. But now that I stare at this piece of perfection that looks away, I understand. I know I do. Nobody has ever loved me more than this few inches long slim punk. It lives for me. It dies for me. Faithful. Non reactive. No drama. Unconditional love. I love him too---I like imagining this lover to be a 'he', I don't know what you imagined him to be. He amazes me when he turns into air; swift, sweet, seductive. My love for him will never die. I will not betray him. I talk to him on a regular basis. I have discussed the Nazis with him, the Janaandolan, the royal massacre and the street children. And I have promised him I will bring opulence to Nepal. A distressing point of fact, he does not miss you. Should that be totted up as my accomplishment, I do not quite know. I can feel the nicotine settle down. Today, he is quiet. No sarcasm, no complaints, he horded up without a word. There are things we all have to conceal, secrets we are compelled to keep, promises we are obliged to make, compromises we are paid to take. The sun does not rise every morning with the same spirit. The shooting stars frown at their must-perform-acts of abnegation for the fulfilment of wishes around the world. Yes I still have not given up my ways of going off topic. Ha. But the point I'm trying to make is that things never quite go everybody's way, resemblance in my case ditto! But with him, I feel better instantly. I have found love at last and you have to be proud that I did. The planet is corrupted you know, and rare ones among the masses get chances such as mine. Love ours', is unconditional. I turn him into ashes now. He'll turn me into ashes later. No nitpicking. Souls will be switched. My story will be a muse, over the tabloids, a hit! Aama is calling me for a circle of haul over the coals. Careless lately, my senses tell me it is to do with the cigarettes I forgot in my shirt's pockets. Lord hoard me! Unwise unwise. Btw aama is still the same. She scolds me just the way she used to do to you. The cigarette butts you left while dying, aama threw them away you should know. And she is fine and pretty, you should know.

Avanti, you can cure your skin problem at home itself. All you have to do is add a pinch of soda to three drops of luke-warm water and blend the mixture well. Put this mixture on the blackheads on your nose and leave it for next 5 to 8 minutes then clean it with a soft cloth or cotton. If you use this remedy at least once every week, blackheads will start receding slowly. If the blackheads still remain then you have to contact a good skin treatment centre.

Hisika, dark circles cannot be removed permanently using foundation cream; it will help you just momentarily. You have dark circles either due to lack of vitamin in your diet or due to sleeplessness. But don’t worry; I have a solution for you. Mix honey with turmeric powder (in equal proportion) and put the mixture around your eyes. If you repeat this procedure for two to three times a week, the dark circles will start to fade away gradually. Besides, you should have a proper diet and sound sleep to get rid of the dark circles altogether.

Looza, liquid eyeliners can be quite bothersome to apply especially if you are in a hurry. If you want good result with liquid eyeliners, you should try colorful ones that come with an applicator that enables you to create a better contour. It is easy to use and is very easy to apply, it is water-proof and dries super fast and there is no danger of spilling or creasing.

I have been wanting to wear these long skirts that Preity Zinta donned in Lakshya back in 2005. I know she wore it long time back but I think long skirts are still in. Those long tiered skirt are meant for spring-summer. It’s not at all advisable for winter season but if you want to create your own style then you can but make sure that you wear it with a fitted jacket. Well I had suggested in the last issue as well that if you have a broad shoulder and want to completely take the focus off your shoulders then you should try raglan sleeve and to pump up your chest, the first option is to wear a padded bra or else de-focus the garment from the bust area so that the focus moves towards other area!!! For instance – if you have nicely shaped hips then try to play more on the hip area!!!

Sheeba Shah

aving authored three novels, including the much acclaimed ‘Facing My Phantoms’ that was published last year, Sheeba Shah has emerged as one of the most promising writers in English in Nepal. Mrs. Shah, who is a vigorous reader and has read almost every book she’s laid her hands on, also writes for ‘The Kathmandu Post’. Her op-ed piece ‘Tongue in Cheek’ is very well liked by the readers for its fresh and, often unconventional, perspectives. Navyaata shares her review of her three favorite books.
Three books of my preference: CRIME AND PUNISHMENT BY FYODOR DOSTOEVSKY. Dostoevsky in my opinion created a completely new genre of artistic form in literature. To be honest as a fiction writer my self Dostoevsky will always be my favorite as I will continue interpreting his works from many and varied dimensions.To me, characters in all his novels are not the usual objectified image of a hero in the traditional novel. In Crime and Punishment Raskolnikov portrays all the depths of the human mind with utter reality. In the first few pages of the novel Raskolnikov receives a letter from his mother with the history of Dounia and Svidrigailov along with the news about the engagement to Luzhin. Raskolnikov has met Marmeladov and knows now the entire history of Sonia. From the very beginning Raskolnikov knows everything, takes everything into account and anticipates everything. The further one reads, it seems as though Raskolnikov has entered into a dialogic contact with the whole of life surrounding him. In short CRIME AND PUNISHMENT is a story where one person finds that his own voice has become of two minds then his own unity and his own internal agreement with himself become the only truth.
MAXIMUM CITY BY SUKETU MEHTA
When I first read Maximum city nearly a year back, it struck me how vividly Suketu Mehta has described a city revealing many aspects of it as though it were a schizophrenic person having various personalities. With an ideal journalistic meticulousness, Mehta has described Mumbai with a beautiful novelist’s panache. His most impressive skill lies not in his documentation but in the acuteness of his writing, that makes the reader feel as though the book were a fiction but more than that, it his flair of taking the readers right into the megalopolis that is Mumbai, a city of, hopes, ambitions, greed and corruption. Having read it, I feel Mumbai is indeed a city of both a wonderful dream and scary night mare. Maximum city is written in a style of a detailed drama enacted by a caste of varied characters. It is interesting to read and feel your self mingle along with the author with the under world dons, the street thugs, the policemen, the politicians the bar girls and the movie stars. Indeed in Maximum City Suketu Mehta has managed to paint as it were, a vivid depiction of what many consider the land of aspirations.
PRIDE AND PREJUDICE BY JANE AUSTEN.
To me Pride and Prejudice has been a symbol of emancipation of women that has represented a woman thinking and behaving far ahead of her times and thus realigning as it were, women’s expectations and self definitions. Having read about the author Jane Austen, one tends to be inclined to the thought that Elizabeth Bennet, the protagonist of the book depicts many characters of the author her self. Elizabeth Bennet is rebellious, steadfast to her own thinking; no matter if they clash with the norms and the social virtues that she is surrounded with. Pride and Prejudice breaks new ground with the protagonist not following the routine ‘heroine’ of the time; the girl, following social norms and wanting to settle down with a rich man. Although the book defies the Cinderella tale it some how does follow the theme of the Cinderella. As the story progresses it is interesting to note how Austen very cautiously moulds the emotions and feelings of her characters eventually leading to Elizabeth admitting her love for Mr. Darcy and finally accepting to marry him.

Movie Review
with Kesang Tseten
Writer and filmmaker Kesang Tseten ushered in a new kind of filmmaking in the country with his documentary “We Homes Chaps”. Since then he has directed several acclaimed documentaries including “On the road with the red god: Machhendranath,” which was adjudged the best documentary in Nepal of the last 10 years by the Nepal Motion Pictures Association in 2005, “We Corner People” and “Frames of War.” His most recent work “In search of Riyal,” “The Desert Eats Us”, and “Saving Dolma” is a trilogy about the lives of Nepali workers in the Gulf. A graduate of Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism, Kesang here talks about his inspiration - American filmmaker Ross McElwee and describes three of his favourite movies. Since his cult classic Sherman’s March (1986), the American filmmaker Ross McElwee has made a string of autobiographical films that are unique in cinema, where he himself is the main character. Where we might expect navel gazing or self-absorption, we see an earnest and funny and honest quest to understand self and life, most importantly love and death. I like the fact vthat McElwee’s films aren’t glossy, the images are not there for their beauty in the usual sense of the word, and his narrative weaves and sprawls.
Sherman’s March
155 minutes, color, 1986 Proclaimed as the champion of the personal documentary, or king of ‘home video for the soul’, his first film Sherman’s March set out to look at the lingering effects of General Sherman’s destruction of the American South, but it is instead about the filmmaker meeting women and looking up ex-girlfriends with an idea of finding a partner, and mostly failing. While anyone can applaud the film’s distinctly idiosyncratic concept, a true one of a kind, ‘a meditation on the nature of love in the age of nuclear holocaust,’ the film is probably too long at 157 minutes, a rambling about all the aforementioned, and yet it holds together delightfully, with many hilarious, quirky and sober moments. Sherman’s March is one of the highest grossing documentaries ever and was chosen by the Library of Congress as a “historically significant American motion picture”. Two of McElwee’s other films I like are companion films as they came out of what was going to be a single very long film. They are examples of remarkable auteurship - quite astounding in how the films oscillate from being funny in an over-the-top way and then swiftly change stride to moments of personal sadness and philosophical questions, with the sureness, and humanness, of thoughts and emotion.
Six O’Clock News
103 minutes, color, 1997 Made after McElwee becomes a father and finds himself at home watching a lot more TV, he becomes obsessed with the nightly tales of calamity reported on by the local news. Six O’Clock News is a documentary film about television news in the United States, the randomness of fate, the anxiety of parenting, and the difference between representation and reality.
Time Indefinite
117 minutes, color, 1993 Time Indefinite begins with the reunion of the filmmaker’s extended family and a scene of them posing for a family portrait. Soon, following the seemingly indulgent family moments, tragedy strikes, not just once. His wife has a miscarriage; his father dies, and then his grandmother. The film deals with loss, the fleeting ephemera of life, but humour is ever present. As he put it, the situation presented ‘a complex web of emotions around death and family, and that doesn’t go away. It just transmutes. And humor is a way in which I confront death a lot.’

The movie revolves around a journalist whose skepticism towards what others conclude as the rationale of a road mishap leads to his struggle to prove his firm conviction about the existence of unseen powers. He is dragged into a state of affairs where he Has to prove with no escape, within twenty four hours. Under the banner of Cinema Nepal Entertainment, Anup Baral, Vinaya Shrestha, Karma, Diya Maskey, Pooja Lama, Menuka Pradhan, BS Rana and others can be seen in the movie. The music release was successfully held on November 15th 2010 with a gathering of the national journalists.

KIMFF 2010
Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival (KIMFF) saw 62 films from 35 countries being featured from 9 December to 13 December at the Nepal Tourism Board and Rastriya Sabha Griha, Exhibition Road. This five days long film festival also showcased various satellite events: animation, filmmaking and writing workshop, alternative book exhibition and book releases of Sotala and Chalachitrakala. There were 36 films in the international non-competitive section, 20 in the international competitive section and 6 in the Nepali Panorama Section. The winners of all sections were awarded with hefty cash prizes.
