Editor's Note Happy New Year 2011!
Editor Note
2010 was a special year for Navyaata. Navyaata was born in April 2010. As a young team with just the desire to be a fresh voice in the block, we were stacked up against many odds. Many questioned our foolhardy determination. We have learnt along the way and matured with time. And the results have shown. We developed a lasting bond with our readers. We increased our sales, our subscribers and just as importantly our facebook fans in a very short period. Today we are one of the most sought after magazine in the market. We are proud of our accomplishments. This has been possible with the hard work of our team and also with the exacting standards of our readers. 2011 begins with a new and revised Navyaata. We have called it the Navyaata 2.0. To start with, we have increased the number of pages. This allows us to squeeze the many contents that we receive from our contributors. There are many deserving pieces that we could not feature because of space limitations. You will also notice that we have increased our magazine pricing. The law of economics and market forces have compelled us to do that. But this will allow us to retain our independence and often irreverent attitude - something that has earned us many readers todate. The new pricing also allows us to accomplish many of the things that we set out to do without compromising our content integrity.

Dr.Sumitra Manandhar Gurung has dedicated more than two decades of her life to speak against any kind of injustice going on in the country. Whether it is against untouchability or for female empowerment, she has become the voice of countless suppressed voices. An independent consultant and a gender activist, she has worked with multiple INGOs, government and civil society.

visit to a Tamang village ‘Golbu Chewa’ in Rasuwa district when she was in Grade Six brought her up close with poverty. The village didn’t have even the fundamentals- food was scarce and the villagers knew nothing about health or hygiene. There was a huge disparity between how she was used to living and what she saw at the village. Born to well off parents in Kathmandu, growing up Dr.Sumitra didn’t have to worry about getting food on the table or spending endless hours working in the fields. “I had a comfortable life,”she shares. “Seeing the miserable condition of the people in Golbu Chewa was saddening. It made me aware of inequality and discrimination in the country”. Although she didn’t stay in Golbu Chewa for more than a day, the image of abject poverty still lies fresh in her mind. “The village looked as if a settlement had been fixed in the middle of a forest. It hardly had a structure” she recalls.

hough at the time she was neither old enough nor in a position to help those people, she didn’t forget them. “That visit changed my life. All that I am doing today has been greatly motivated by what I saw in Golbu Chewa,” she says. Currently, the chair person of Mahila Sahakari Sanstha (Women’s Co-operative organization), Dr.Sumitra has been involved with various non-profit organizations including Samata Foundation and NCARD (National Coalition Against Racial discrimination). “I don’t work for a particular caste or creed. My work has always been to help the deprived and under-privileged,” clarifies Dr.Sumitra who was handing over cheques to two students belonging to indigenous groups when I walked into her office for the interview. Both master level students of Linguistics, Kissan and Rai are grateful for her help without which they wouldn’t have been able to pursue their further education. Like them, there are many others who have received education, proper health care and support owing to Dr.Sumitra’s efforts. Currently, she is busy, advocating the rights of the children of the twenty conservationists who died in the tragic helicopter crash at Ghunsa, Taplejung in 2006 which included her husband Dr. Chandra P Gurung.”Many have already forgotten about the incident. These people dedicated their life to environment conservation. The government should do what it can to ensure a better future for their children,” she tells Navyaata.
To those who know her, it didn’t come as a surprise when Dr.Sumitra endeavoured towards guaranteeing minorities their rights. Her family lineage perhaps is responsible for her rebellious spirit. Back in 2005 B.S when Ranas were still ruling the country, Dr.Sumitra’s grandfather, father and uncles along with other activists decided to open a co-ed school, providing an opportunity for girls to receive education, which was how Shanti Nikunja School came into being. Naturally, their move infuriated the Ranas who demanded the teachers be arrested. But that wasn’t enough in bringing down their spirits. “When one batch of teachers would be imprisoned, the next batch would teach and when there were no more teachers, the senior students would take the lead. This was how the school functioned,” she reveals expressing pride in having studied in a school which became symbolic for revolting against the Rana regime. The school provided a ground for revolt. “By the time I was born, the Rana rule had ended but the economic and social disparities they helped create was still existent,” tells Dr. Sumitra who felt the need for change.
“During those days I had to walk to my office in Jawlakhel from my home in Swayambu with a baby in hand.” After completing her Masters in Geography from Tribhuvan University, Dr. Sumitra spent a lot of time visiting different villages which helped her understand the gravity of the situation better. While many of us would have preferred to stay in the comfort of the city, that was not the case with Dr. Sumitra. She wanted to be where people most needed her - in villages. As a volunteer for National Development Service (NDS), she and seven other students went to Lamjung. She wanted to be posted at the farthest village. Her teacher wasn’t very supportive of her decision. It was at a time when girls traveling alone wasn’t considered common. She remembers arguing with her teacher. “The teacher wanted us to stay in a single village which I thought was unfair”, reminisces Dr. Sumitra. The villages there hardly had qualified teachers. She felt it was unfair for a village to get help from all the volunteers while others had schools without any teachers. So, she advised her teacher to divide them into groups of two as that way, they could cover four schools in different villages. The teacher was reluctant, no doubt. Finally, he agreed to divide them into a group of three. Dr.Sumitra wanted to go to Gaun Sahar, a village that reminded her of Golbu Chewa. Sadly, her wish wasn’t fulfilled and she along with a friend was posted at her teacher’s own village. “I was disappointed because we couldn’t reach out to the village that needed us more,” she expresses.
“What if the work I began dies with me. That would be pretty sad.”

“I don’t work for recognition” J
ana Kalyan School was where she taught in the village. While the infrastructure of the village was better than other villages in Lamjung, social problems persisted every where. Racial discrimination was common. “Newari being my mother tongue, I didn’t know how to speak proper Nepali. Few of the Brahmin villagers would tease me about my accent and I would fight back,” she declares. She particularly remembers an incident that shook her. “I and other teachers of the school were having tea. A former student of the school who became a teacher because of his academic excellence was standing outside the tea shop. When I called him in, he declined.” Later she learnt from a friend that he was from Dalit community. “I was so angry at my fellow teachers. Despite being educated they were discriminating a co-worker on the basis of illogical social beliefs.” As a way of getting back at the villagers she left her most prized possession- her lamp (which the other villagers had been eyeing) to that specific student when she returned back to Kathmandu.
like slaves, the women there spent their entire day serving their husbands only to be locked up in sheds during their monthly cycles. On questioning the men about this system, she got a very alarming response. Most of the men didn’t believe in the system but they were scared about the social backlash they would face if they went against the social norms. A gripping problem faced by the women of Achham was AIDS. Most of the men who went to work in India brought back the disease with them and their wives would be the silent sufferers. “Upon contracting the disease, these women are just left to die unlike men, who had access to medications,” shares Dr. Sumitra. “The literacy rate of Achaam is really low. The women there aren’t able to speak for themselves. That is why I wanted to be their voice,” says Dr. Sumitra. Her contribution to the society is indeed inspiring. And recognition has been plentiful. She has been awarded at several occasions but fails to remember their names. “Sometimes I don’t have the time to go receive the awards. It is encouraging but I don’t do work for recognition,” she says. At fifty five years of age, Dr. Sumitra has done a lot but in her eyes it is just a beginning.” It is not possible to change the attitude and beliefs of people instantly. But I am hopeful of the younger generation and believe they will usher in hope in the country,” she expresses. At times she feels weary and retirement looks enticing. But then she worries about the future of her initiatives. “What if the work I began dies with me. That would be pretty sad,” she shares.
Her first job after completing her Ph.D from Hawaii was in ICIMOD. It was during her time there that she realized the difference in gender roles.” Being a woman is difficult,” she says. The various roles that a woman has to play are exhausting. She was pregnant with her second child when she began her work in ICIMOD. Her job was to study the role of women in mountain research development. “It was a tough thing to do in a patriarchal society where gender roles aren’t much talked about,” she tells. What was even tougher were the months that followed after she gave birth. She took only two weeks maternity leave and was back on the job. “I had two kids to take care of. We were building a house at the time. My husband was posted at Bandipur and I was working. It was really hectic,” she says. At the time the country faced scarcity of petrol because of the dispute between Rajeev Gandhi and Late King Birendra. “During those days I had to walk to my office in Jawlakhel from my home in Swayambu with a baby in my hands.” After a year she quit her job. Quitting her job steered her direction and brought her focus back to social causes. She became a freelance consultant and traveled across the country. During her course of work she saw more and more problems that needed swift solutions. When she went to Achham, she was outraged to see the condition of women there. Literally treated

Being mentally strong is a big part of the game, and it shows me that the only thing I can TRY and control is my mind her college years in America, she pursued different sports like soccer, tennis and beach volleyball. She says that she played those sports usually when she got together with her peers as a fun yet healthy time-pass. But her domain was golf and she loved the game from a very young age-from the time she watched her father play the sport. She took a few golf lessons during her time in the UK. She took a long break from the game during her pregnancy and post natal stages but she has recently resumed it as she is very attached to the game. “Of all the sports I’ve played, I feel competitive golf has really tested me. B
orn on July 1 in Kathmandu, Kesang Chodden Lama has taken the Nepali golf scenario by storm. Her image is formidable, not because she is muscular and outspoken but because she has been the defending champion for years now. Her petite frame and graceful manners belies her athletic accomplishments. One fine morning, the Navyaata team went on to spend a day with her. Kesang did her schooling from Modern School in Uttar Pradesh, India and spent nearly seven years in hostel. Then she completed her high school from Lincoln School in Kathmandu. She pursued her BBA from Seattle University in America and went on to get her Masters in Business from University of Surrey, UK. Her education has been well-rounded but she was pretty much into sports from a very young age. Whenever she came back home to Nepal during holidays from boarding school in India, her father enrolled her in various activities around town. Kesang hit the gymnasium and practiced karate during these breaks apart from the regular tuitions. “I was always interested in sports, be it track events or even something that I didn’t know how to play”, she says. Kesang was always a member in her high school athletic teams and during
period, she was getting ready to study Masters at UK. They stayed good friends for a while and held a long distance relationship during her final years in college. After a courtship of 2 years, they finally got married in 2004. Now apart from added responsibilities as a wife, she is also a mother to her first child, Wangyal Kunsang Gyatso, a 10 month old son. Her husband, Mr. Dhondup is extremely busy at times and travels a lot for his family business. Kesang laments that it is not just her - even Wangyal hasn’t been able to spend time with him, saying “Wangyal is not even a year old, but he hasn’t met his dad for 6 months now”. Kesang Lama starts her day by driving to the golf course early morning along the scenic road to Gokarna (excuse the traffic at Bouddha and the jittery roads) and has breakfast at the Gokarna Forest Resort. She spends an hour or so practicing her strokes to perfection. One thing that really impressed us was her complete dedication to the sport. She kept trying until she got her stroke right. On her way back, she quickly grabs a mug of coffee at Illy, Lazimpat and meets a few friends there. Other days, she simply orders a takeaway and goes to Kingkow, her clothing store for kids. She does a round inspection and gives instruction to the staff members there.
mentally strong is a big part of the game, and it shows me that the only thing I can TRY and control is my mind”, she explains. Kesang states, “Golf is a beautiful game and the fact that it can be played by people of all ages and all levels and would serve as a great way to enjoy a day makes it even more beautiful.” She further adds that she would want to see more youngsters take up the sport and take it to new heights in Nepal. Kesang met her husband Wangchen Dhondup at the Gokarna Forest Resort, and as fate would have it, at the golf course! It was the love for the sport that brought the two together first as acquaintances, then after, as lovers. During that send us your feedback at editor@nav yaata.com

Navyaata\People After an occasional lunch with her friend, she takes out time to pick up her nephew, Dorjee, from his pre-school in Chabahil. Kesang adores her nephew a lot and it seems clear that she has a hard time saying ‘no’ to his curious whims. After dropping him back home, she drives to the Bhatbhateni Supermarket to buy her daily supply of fresh veggies and baked goods.
Kesang’s mild demeanour and impeccable manners makes for a very pleasant conversation. Kesang occasionally shops for her nephew and was amazed to see that there were no proper kids’ clothing store in Kathmandu. It was then that she decided to open an outlet for high end kid’s clothes and she brought forward this famous Hong Kong based franchise to Nepal, now with two branches at City Center and Durbarmarg. “I studied marketing in college and this whole experience has been exciting, opening up a business and expanding it”, exclaims Kesang.
Kesang is a travel-buff. She has been to various parts of the globe, be it for golf tournaments or for vacations. She has travelled to almost all the European countries, parts of Asia and even parts of America. She has recently developed a fetish for cooking. She has tried her hand at different recipes for her son as she says that he has started eating solids. According to Kesang, she is a life-long learner and that she is always gaining insights from various experiences in life. She also seems to be an advocate for development because while travelling across the bumpy roads of Boudha on the way to the golf course, she exclaimed how corruption has weakened all administrative structures. Kesang has been a fortunate person and she is satisfied with her life. But she would want to contribute to the society and give back in whichever way possible. After a tiring day of responsibility and bonding with peers and family, she rushes home to attend to her son and embraces him lovingly.
Kesang is an amiable woman and enjoys hanging out with her peers but she proclaims that she is in very good terms with only one friend and she spends time with her bestie whenever she is in town. “There is no one such that I always have to be with”, she adds. Sometimes, she goes for lunch with her friends at different eateries around town. Family comes first in her life and her mother has a huge role to play. “Being a new mother is challenging but a great experience. My mother has helped me a lot in this regard as she has taught me all the ups and downs of rearing a newborn.” 18 N Av yaata • m ag h 2 0 6 7
Being a new mother is challenging but a great experience. Our day with Kesang provided us glimpses into her very full life. She is a daughter, a wife, an aunt and a doting mother. Her confident demeanor not only reflects her achievements but also her personality- after all she has reasons to stand tall. To be able to achieve at all levels of life - personal, professional, family - is indeed quite a tall order. Our team came away impressed with Kesang’s accomplishments, her balance in life and her indomitable spirit!
What you didn’t know about Kesang Chodden Lama: She won 2 gold medals in the women’s category in golf the first time it was incorporated in the National Games She met her husband at the golf course in Gokarna She spent 7 years of her childhood in a boarding school. She studied grade 9 at a school in the United States.

The pop sensation who rocked the nineties’ music charts and dominated the 2000’s, Nima Rumba is perhaps one of the most known faces in Nepal. ‘Miss Catwalk’, his first music video was an instant hit and the song almost became an anthem to the youth of the time. Success followed with ‘Block Heels’, ‘Huri Batas’ and ‘Priti Basyo’. The number of his fans has only soared over the years. Also the face of many well known brands, Nima is one of those few stars who chose to marry at the start of his career. After a three year hiatus, he is preparing to release his eighth studio album - good news for many of his fans who have been eagerly waiting for more melodious, romantic ballads from this popular singer. Born in Hongkong, Shelly completed her schooling from Bhanu Bhakta School. A passionate cook, a beautician and the proprietor of Orchid Nursery, Shelly first met Nima in 1993 at GAA night where he was performing. At the very meeting, numbers were exchanged and soon after lengthy telephone conversations became their daily ritual. Her simplicity, generosity and honesty impressed Nima. He was captivated by her aura and after two years of dating the singer popped the big question. At just seventeen years of age, Shelly married the singer.

What is the one thing that you like most about each other? Nima- I like many things about her. She is sincere, faithful,
loving and caring. Above all her heart is pure.
Shelly- He is very caring. He is really good with kids and
helps around the house. I especially enjoy watching him cook breakfast.
I wasn’t a wild party girl before marriage so I was used to staying home, doing chores.
What is the one thing that you dislike about each other? Nima- I don’t think there’s such a thing. Shelly- At present there are none. But during the early
years of marriage, he spent a lot of time partying with his friends. There were a lot of late nights which made me mad. But now he is always home. (After Shelly spills the beans about his late nights, Nima remembers something that he doesn’t like about her)
Nima- Shelly puts her hands into a lot of stuff. She
has taken courses for everything from beautician to photography to cooking.
What would you like to change about each other? Nima- Shelly is very friendly and at times too trusting. I
always tell her people these days are not the same. More often than not, they are looking to harm rather than help.
Shelly- I would advise him to take up Yoga. He doesn’t
exercise. Yoga is very good for your body and mind.
Do you fight a lot? Nima- We don’t fight, we argue. Arguments are necessary
because at the end, whoever makes mistake realizes it and apologizes. We don’t have any ego problem to say sorry.
Shelly- When our views don’t match, we end up arguing.
Because our younger son is very sensitive, we take our arguments to the car. We never fight inside our house.
How has life changed after marriage? Shelly- I wasn’t a wild party girl before marriage so I was
used to staying home, doing chores. Samuel was born soon after our marriage. Both of us were busy looking after him and bringing him up.
Nima- Marriage has been good to me. Before I was a
struggling artist without a concrete goal. After marriage, all the good things started happening. When Samuel was born, I became more responsible and mature.
What do you prefer him/her in? Nima- She looks good in both jeans and sari. Shelly- He knows his style so he always picks the right clothes.
What do you think holds a relation together? Nima- I think the beginning of any relation is very
important. You should love each other without any expectation. Also, I think a certain level of space should be given to your partner.
Shelly- Understanding is really important. When
you don’t understand each other, you can’t grow in a relationship.
Through Navyaata, what message would you like to give each other? Nima- Have faith in yourself and in God. She has
many dreams and I tell her, if you work hard your dreams will come true.
Shelly- Since his new album will hit the markets soon; I want to wish him good luck.

A Pair Of UGGS
Style By Sharmila & Akash Rajbhandari
In this day and age where people go to any lengths to suffer discomfort just to be counted among the ‘trendy’ and the ‘fashionable’, a pair of UGGS truly stands out as a pillar against the storm. Originally worn by Australian sheepherders to keep their feet warm, UGGS have taken the world by storm ever since 2003, making it a staple for any fashionista in any part of the world. You might ask, ‘why?’ or ‘how?’ does a boot that defies all fashion logic stay popular? The answer lies in two simple reasons. First, we all know of people wanting to stand out from the crowd or differ from the usual norm. A pair of UGGS will certainly make you noticeable in the fashion-conscious crowd given it doesn’t come cheap and is highly popular among the likes of top

celebrities such as Sienna Miller, Taylor Momsen, Sarah Jessica Parker and Elle Macpherson. Second, and more importantly, is the fact that these boots are indeed quite comfortable to wear. The design of the boot with its sheepskin results in considerable thermostatic benefits and the fleecy fibers in the interior of the boots allow for air circulation during the summers, making the UGGS, the perfect boot for all occasions. So, with these fashion concerns answered, there is no reason why you shouldn’t join the rush and buy a pair of UGGS before the winter ends.

RUNWAY THE NAVYAATA WAY Style By Sharmila & Akash Rajbhandari
Forget Santa’s Stockings, we’re talking Lace this fall! DKNY’s Holiday collection 2010/2011 is super sexy and the reason the collection looks so hot is down to one item, the lace stockings. While lace has always been associated with all things girly and alluring, it’s time to show some tough love by pairing lace with fabrics you wouldn’t normally use. Our favorite suggestion? Mix the sexy piece with the Balmain inspired gold sequined skirt and be prepared for the attention as you know the K Town folks are a rather conservative lot!

Heads up, By – Pooja Gurung
Botox!
Age begins to show all through those creased lines. One desires to look smarter, younger and livelier and a probable suitable solution is Botox injections. We know, we know! The name won’t make you smile, BUT the injection can keep you from frowning. Botox is a registered trademark of Allergen
Inc., USA as well as manufactured and marketed by it. It is a drug made from toxins produced by the bacterium Clostindrium botulinum. Botox injections work by weakening or paralyzing certain muscles and by blocking certain nerves and is best at treating facial lines. The most common areas for this therapy are the lines between the eyes, forehead and crow’s feet and on occasions, even around the mouth. Small amounts of Botox are injected with a needle into the facial muscles responsible for movement as associated with lines and wrinkles. The dose is calculated carefully to provide the look you desire. One can be confident of achieving a natural and fresh result and of retaining one’s natural expression. The procedure takes only a few minutes and no anesthesia is required. No wonder it’s known as the “lunch time procedure”. But in rare cases it causes minor discomfort. So if one wishes, they apply a local anesthetic cream beforehand. It generally takes 2-3 days for Botox to begin taking effect and 10 -15 days to take full effect and it is best to avoid alcohol at least 1 week prior to treatment. The effect of treatment generally lasts for 4 - 6 months, as the therapy is temporary. Re-treatment is then required on a regular basis to remain effective. Botox can be administered to both men and women of practically any age group. As every person is different it depends entirely on the individual, but a single treatment of Botox will normally last for approximately 4 - 5 months. For maximum results it is recommended that you don’t rub the treated area for 12 hours after injection, maintain an upright posture for 4 hours, not exercise on the day of treatment, no sun beds and facials / chemical laser resurfacing treatment for 7 days. 38 N Av yaata • m ag h 2 0 6 7
Botox is generally a safe and effective treatment method. Side effects do occur but like the intended treatment effects, they are mostly reversible. Possible side effects include: swelling, redness, slight headache, pain during injection, itching, numbness and bruising. There have been no allergies associated with Botox till date. There are certain conditions where Botox treatments are not recommended. These include patients who are pregnant, breastfeeding or have a neurological disease, like myasthenia. When considering one’s facial enhancement options Botox is surprisingly quite affordable. Approved by the United States FDA, Botox is the worlds’ no.1 brand in cosmetic procedure and is now available at Care and Cure Polyclinic. If you are interested, Care and Cure polyclinic can arrange an initial consultation. This will allow them to find out your particular needs and expectations. It also gives you the opportunity to ask questions and have the options and treatment explained in detail. You will be under no obligation, but if you decide to go ahead, either during the same consultation, or at a later appointment date, you will be asked few questions about your general health and required to sign a consent form. The Botox is then administered by injection to the predetermined areas with a very fine needle. Your treatment will be carefully monitored, and the interval between injections adjusted accordingly.
From Hollywood celebs to even the Indian movie-stars, everyone has been surrendering to the wonders of this agedefying drug. So go on, move ahead and get yourself few pricks that will instantaneously make you look younger!

BRANDS: Labels Worth The Hype By Akash Rajbhandari
Celebrities! The Modern Day Role Models influence millions of us in ways unimaginable. We watch them portray different personas, hear them speak their frame of mind in symphonic melodies and read about their lives like it’s all an open book. But, it is fashion that’s been the biggest inspiration to all we present day consumers with celebrities designing fashion lines and establishing labels of their own. Here are our 6 favorite celeb brands which not only pack a punch but exemplify the true essence of design: originality, creativity and quality.
Clandestine Industries
By Pete Wentz
Now, don’t get disappointed all you Emo lovers! Emo’s own prince, Pete Wentz, better known as the bassist of the famed punk band Fall Out Boy, has a clothing line of his own. Ever since its inception, Clandestine Industries, first established in the year 2006 A.D., has created many different types of clothing, focusing on producing limited edition tees, hoodies, accessories and jewelries, establishing the line’s signature Batheart logo, while working with major fashion labels and stores such as DKNY, Wet Seal and Nordstrom. The line is currently sold online only at www. clandestineindustries.com or alongside Fall Out Boy merchandise at shows.
William Rast
By Justin Timberlake
William Rast, a fashion collaboration founded by pop sensation Justin Timberlake and his best friend, Trace Ayala in the year 2006 A.D., is primarily a premium denim brand best known for its signature embroidery on the back pocket that looks like a ‘V’ with a slash across it. Named after Justin’s and Trace’s grandfathers – William being Justin’s and Rast being Trace’s, the label even started producing tough leather jackets and relaxed tanks and tops over the years. A fusion of Hollywood glamour and Justin’s southern roots, William Rast has been favored by celebrities such as Vanessa Minnillo, Jessica Biel and Cameron Diaz. At $180 apiece, William Rast may not be budget friendly but it certainly is one of the best denim labels in the entire industry.

House Of Harlow 1960
By Nicole Richie
BRANDS: Labels Worth The Hype By Akash Rajbhandari
styleGUIDE
Celebrity
Like many celebrity lines, House Of Harlow was named after that someone special, Nicole’s daughter, Harlow Winter Kate Madden. The line which currently features jewelry and handbags that have a 60’s feel coupled with a tribal vibe embodies Nicole’s Bohemian style: the jewelry was made to layer and wear together. Mixed pieces such as enamel, leather, gold plate and resin create a collection that is unique, eyecatching and interesting. Though technically not a clothing line, House Of Harlow 1960 deserves a mention on this list for Nicole has embraced so many personalities over the years: from being the wild party girl to a fashionista to an awesome Mommy, and through it all she’s managed to look great. Part of her appeal is her love for accessories. She piles on the bangles, loves on-the-head headbands and rocks chunky statement rings like no other, all of it reflecting her Boho chic attitude. And here’s the real reason why the line totally rocks: It’s totally college-budget friendly with the pieces starting from $20.
L.A.M.B.
By Gwen Stefani
Making its runway debut in 2004 A.D., Gwen Stefani, the lead vocalist of the alternative band No Doubt, describes L.A.M.B., a multi-product brand incorporating clothing and accessories, trendy bags, shoes and watches as well as a line of bestselling fragrances, as a little bit of everything, noting “a little bit of Sound of Music, Orange County Chola girl, Rastafarian Rasta girl, and English Great Gatsby Garden Party girls,” as her key influences. L.A.M.B., which stands for Love.Angel.Music.Baby, has had huge commercial success with about 280 stores worldwide and has attracted much celebrity acclaim with top celebs such as Teri Hatcher, Nicole Kidman, Paris Hilton and Stefani herself sporting L.A.M.B. designs in many occasions. Part of the line’s success is believed to have come from Stefani’s background: Stefani comes from a long line of seamstresses, as even her great grandmother would sew clothes. All in all, Gwen was one of the first celebrities to do high fashion right. L.A.M.B., her luxurious collection, was a far cry from the bejeweled tracksuits of the time. The best thing about L.A.M.B. is the fact that it’s always unexpected and fresh, often featuring bold patterns, lively hues and ethnic influence.
Elizabeth & James
Self-described as exemplifying an “eclectic lifestyle by blending uptown and downtown elements with casual yet traditional style,” the Olsen twins’ line is “trend alert, yet timeless.” Elizabeth & James, named after the twins’ brother and sister, was first launched in the year 2007 A.D. and has been a big hit ever since. A pseudo luxury brand, Elizabeth & James is reasonable than the twins’ high-end collection The Row, but priced higher than their Mary-Kate & Ashley line for discount stores. From ruffled dresses to oxford shoes to boyfriend jackets, the line covers it all and each piece from it reflects the twins’ unique hippie-grungebohemian style, which they’re a little too well known for. MaryKate & Ashley’s collection of smart, modified basics is totally crave-worthy and have been seen on many famous personalities such as Dakota Fanning, the Laguna Beach star, Kristin Cavallari and Jessica Simpson. send us your feedback at editor@nav yaata.com

AFTER
Ushering New Trends with Old :Nima Sherpa At a time when almost every other person in the country seems to be in a rush to leave for abroad, people who choose to return may seem like fools setting out to wreck their careers. But for Nima Sherpa it was a conscious decision, one that she has no regrets about . “Going to foreign land is important as you get to learn a lot of new things. But what is even more important is returning back to the country to actually use use that knowledge,” she shares.
Traditions
Text- Tsering Dolker Gurung Photographs- Sonam Topkey Sherpa
Born in the Himalayan district of Solukhumbu and raised in Kathmandu, Nima completed her schooling from Bal Kumari Secondary School. While at college, she met the love of her life and soon tied the knot. A mother of three, Nima spent her first few years of marriage raising her kids and looking after the household. “When my babies got a little older, I wanted to do something for myself. I feel that time should be utilized,” she says. In 1995 she left for Japan where she received beautician and hair dressing course. After staying there for three years she returned back to Nepal. Finding a vast difference between the trend of Japan and Nepal, she enrolled herself in Shehnaz Hussain’s institute to understand the trend better.
After twelve years of travelling to and fro Japan and Nepal in 2004 she returned to Nepal for good. She wanted to use the skill she acquired in Japan to bring something new in the country. So, Disney’s Barber shop and beauty home at Chuchepati, Boudha was opened. A first of its kind unisex parlour, Disney’s received a lot of media attention driving people’s curiosity. “Back then there used to be boards outside parlours saying no men allowed. There was this taboo about parlours providing service to gents being bad. I wanted to change that concept,” she explains. And she was successful in doing so. Other unis ex parlours mushroomed in the area there after.
Shear Barber shop and beauty home is her latest venture. Her dream of becoming a fashion designer it seems is now materializing. A student of fashion designing at INIFD institute, Nima created a new trend with modified designs of Bakhu, traditional dress of Sherpas in 2009. Seeing the falling trend of wearing this traditional cloth among youngsters, she wanted to make the dress youth friendly. For Miss Sherpa 2009 show, she incorporated new cuts and styles with the traditional wear and it was an instant hit. People started flocking to her store asking for her creations. “I had to sent them away because I didn’t own a boutique,” she reminisces. Encouraged by the response, she decided to create her own line. She also designed a dress for Miss India Pooja Chopra and did her make-up while Ms. Chopra’s visit in Nepal. She has registered her company as ‘Sherpa Fashion Home’ which will specialise in kids and maternity wear. “I want to create something new. Copying is easy-creating is hard,” claims this talented lady who is also the official designer of Miss Sherpa 2011. Recipient of Rastriya Nagarik Bikash Samaan by Shanti Bikas Abhiyan Nepal and Youth’s group of Art lover by Samajik Samman, Nima believes in giving back to society. She is the treasurer of Sherpa Artists’ association which works in promoting talented Sherpa. The association provides skill development trainings and also helps them find jobs. Whether it is providing free beautician training to the impoverished or lending a hand to orphans, Nima does it with a smile and satisfaction. send us your feedback at editor@nav yaata.com

Resolution Broken! Well the last year, I ended up finishing all my salary shopping in just one store. Plus the debts. So I was MADE to swear not to head towards that store again. And obvious enough, that was my resolution! On Day One though, I HAD to go there because my friend was leaving for the States and she wanted to buy a dress from the same store. Guilty as charged, my resolution was forgotten, money spent and my credit card blocked! -Manaswee, Bagdol
No Procrastination! It wouldn’t be New Year’s if I didn’t have regrets!!! It’s been a decade that I have never been able to finish my work on time but this year I made a promise to myself that I will try my very best to change. I wouldn’t have realized this thing by now if I hadn’t become a victim of my own habits. My school exams were knocking at my door but I didn’t care. I always had a habit of studying @ the last hour i.e. 1 week before the exams. My exams arrived but I was not well prepared!!! I gave my exams and I flunked my math’s paper. From that day I realized what mistake I’d done. If I hadn’t been lazy and had put an extra effort I would’ve definitely passed with flying colors. So, this year’s New Year resolution for me is trying not to be lazy and realizing my dreams - Ruku shrestha, Sifal, Chabahil

No Liquor! New Year’s is all about party and fun, but then along with it, comes the resolutions we make-and most of us don’t abide by it for more than a day or two. On last New Year ’s Eve, I resolved not to drink any hard liquor. When I told my friends about it, they laughed at my face saying that I was insane to make such a resolution, that too on the eve when all of them planned to drink booze and party wild. Believe me, it was really difficult to just sit and drink orange juice while listening to the merriment and drunken gibberish of my friends. But very soon, some of them passed out on the couch. Some were still puking and most were making fools out of themselves in their drunken stupor. But I was dancing away and even striking up conversations with cute guys. I was glad that I stuck to my vows and I have ever since. - Netu Magar, Kapan

Piscaterian! Every New Year I make a resolution. And every year I lament at my own failure to keep my resolutions. A few years ago, I met Karma Apa in Seattle and I came away so impressed with His Holiness that I felt it proper to give up meat. Now I am a very devout carnivore. It is a big thing for me to give up meat. But because I had resolved, I persevered. Within a few weeks I started doubting my sanity in making such a resolution. Every meal was becoming a chore with just vegetables for the sampling. So I devised a clever workaround. I wanted to be true to my words. I would not eat meat. But I never said anything about fish. That year many a fish made it to my stomach and I was quite happy with my ingenuity. My wife was not very amused. She was there with me when we got an audience with Karma Apa -Anonymous
Shorts shortcomings! For the last five years, I have been making a resolution every New Year only to abide by it for a few days. By the end of the week I am tired and the resolution seems like another useless rule to follow. During these years I have made some funny, some weird and some stupid resolutions. Last year, my new year’s resolution was to not wear shorts in the summer. The reason being I studied in a university full of idiots who didn’t leave any stone unturned to tease a girl in shorts. There were very few girls who donned shorts in summer in our Uni and those of us who did became the subject of torture for the guys . So, I thought to myself no matter how hot the weather was, I would bear it and wear full pants to college. At the start of summer, I stuck by my resolution. As August approached, the heat rose. Moreover having just got a cute pair of shorts from my cousin in Canada, I couldn’t stick by my resolution. I wore the shorts to college and like every time I wore it I had to bear those ridiculously sexist comments. -Kriti G, Lagankhel

The best and worst of 2010 You have heard the celebrities say it. We know what they liked and disliked about the past year. After all, they are on every magazine cover, they grace every newspaper stand, they occupy the TV airwaves and you can hear their voice on many FM radio shows. But what about the opinions of the silent majority? The 99.9999% of the population who are the Nepali mass. How many of us have been able to get their unvarnished views and often cynical take on what was good and bad about the year twenty ten? Staying true to our motto of being the magazine for everyone who is anyone, we have sampled the diverse opinions of youth on the street. We took to the streets of Kathmandu and conducted a random poll asking people what made it to their list of favorites and their list of dislikes. The hall of fame against the wall of shame. Some pretty interesting answers we must say. Enjoy!!!

ALL THAT
Pre Party DrAmA Text By: Bartika Rai Photograph By: Usha Pun
T
his is not a soliloquy. As my first party approached, I did not sleep well for a fortnight. I would not eat well, I would not study and I would not think at all while shopping. I kept on making excuses at home to get more money. The stress was overwhelming. And worst of all, I was a stranger to myself. The organizers were my friend’s friends. I had accepted to go on compelled situations and the fact that my long time crush ‘could’ be there acted as a catalyst. When the day arrived, I readied myself and with a group of close friends, we hit the floor; only ‘hit’ was just a few odd moves; extremely uncomfortable ones at that. The heels got us sore on our feet, the dress had us cold and the smoke had us coughing. My eyes were itchy with the shifted contact lens and on top of that, my crush turned up with ‘his’ girl! <Grrrr! I know!> There were still affairs to discuss about; I had to explain my parents about the lost 10,000 rupees from my mother’s account which I could see giving away an evil expression to me from my body’s exterior. The color was blue FYI! Been in a similar situation? The pressure is overpowering indeed! The idea of perfectionism and the uber-present fashion stores where every dress that you come across nearly literally screams that it could make you look more attractive is not very helpful either. The days seem long. The nights are XXL. You dream about the party, you eat very less to stay from showing your flab hanging out from your dress<which I actually don’t even have!>. When ‘the’ day arrives, the pressure envelops you. Waxing, bathing, hair treatment, mascara, cleansing, ironing, powder, rouge, camera - WHERE is the camera? Clumsy out, pretty in; rows with parents for being half dressed; ‘Half dressed? Mom, puhleez it’s fashionable!’ Parents don’t understand you, eye shades, manicure, fragrance, ‘Am I looking overdone?’ ‘Am I overdressed?’ ‘She looks better than me! Grr!’ ‘Does this lipstick make me look cheap?’… All too familiar? The pre party drama!

you attend parties? You are not the only
one in the planet going through
this state!
>
What to wear?
now think?
The first thing that hits nine out of every ten of you after knowing about a party is the dress! Seven out of ten end up splurging money on a new dress, two out of ten end up borrowing a dress from your peers and rare cases exist when you appear on the floor with bits and pieces from your wardrobe that suddenly feels very old and anti-fad!.
Shit! Bad Hair Day
Aashma, 19, shares ‘Parties are times when I push myself into a ‘near mad’ frenzy. The feeling that I “have” to look good and appear fashionable and yet act ultra cool is honestly a real stress!’ Awashnee, 18, confesses ‘In the last party I went to, I had to lift 12000 from my father’s credit card. I got busted, grounded for two months and the worst: I ended up loathing the dress!’ Without a doubt then, you are not the only one going through this state! Which shoes? And accessories? A majority of respondents stated that shoes were the next culprit. Enter a store and shoes scream from all direction “I can make you look just perfect!” And while you pay a fortune for the one pair, another pair seems more chic. Helpful? Not even close. Aditi, 21 recalls; ‘I am not very tall and I was planning on wearing a short dress to my last party. I went shoe hunting with my friends to impress one guy who would be coming to the party and I ended up buying a pencil heel that was mad inches high. I felt great, my legs looked longer. But it was so uncomfortable! That guy did ask me to dance but I was just too uncomfortable and there, he asked another girl out. I detest that pair of heels and of course, that one pair is crazily culpable!” Veena, 20 splits; ‘For the last party I went to, I went to each one of the stores of Kathmandu searching for the perfect clutch and ended up buying one for 7000 which I now dislike.’ Party equals stress buster. What do you
ALL THATPre-PartyDRAMA

How many of you have lied to yourself that you have absolute fun when you attend parties? No offence to the parties, but don’t you think they are supposed to be stress busters? A party is a social gathering especially aimed at having fun. Now now, how many of you end up actually having fun? Get honest ladies, the situation is not very pleasing. We have statistics to boast and a few extracts.
Yes indeed, with assistance of the large beauty industry; you push yourself into hair treatments, waxing appointments, makeup sessions, mascara sessions, and more superficiality! Deepali, 17 shares; ‘My hair is very difficult to manage and even though I end up possessing some pretty dresses, my hair is always the problem. I’d rather not go to any party feeling like the ugly duckling in my team.’ Faint, Anxious and Tensed Not much explanation required here, our respondents effortlessly related themselves to the situation. A bulk of the respondents claimed they felt faint and weak at the time they enter the party venues. What else can you expect from your interiors when you sacrifice all your meals and nearly forget that eating is even important? As you approach the party time, you start getting umber conscious. One major panic everybody shares, ‘Do I look FAT?’ The Floor Time Finally on the dance floor, you can barely see. The smoke engulfs you. If you are a smoker, you smoke all you want. What happens to the nonsmokers? And the bumps and bruises from other merry makers. You wonder why you are even there! It’s over! Yes! After a long drama, the day is over. And things get settled, almost. You are drained. You are exhausted. You feel worn out! Don’t push it too hard, have fun! And the next time we catch you, we want some party animals actually hitting the floor! Get into the most comfortable of clothes, easy to dance shoes, less makeup and more feeling. Let us change the convention of parties in Nepal for once! Let us focus on having fun and not showing off! This January, roll into the clubs when you feel like spontaneity, fun and lots of dancing! Partaayyyy!

15. If Life gave you a second chance, what would you do differently?
I will not repeat the amount of mistakes I have made or will not make certain moves which I did or I will not trust certain people I trusted blindly but then I know I will end up making the same mistakes because I have not yet learned to think from my head and not from my heart. So, until I do that I will keep making those mistakes no matter how many chances I get.
I think a guy needs to be humble with definitely some attitude and for girls’ integrity, passion and patience are must have traits.

For most individuals is rarely about greed or poverty. Out in a store for a casual meandering, you like one item terribly, but you don’t have the money or you simply don’t want to pay for it. So you just grab the bit when nobody’s watching. You conceal the piece, try looking inconspicuous and proceed like nothing ever happened. Or you are out with your friends in a store, hanging out, having a good time; Text By: Bartika Rai you grab some bits when no one’s watching and Photograph By: Usha Pun sprint by. You might have been thinking nothing ever happened. You were just having fun. Or you might have been worried dead with guilt. Guilty as charged dearie, you had been shoplifting! Nepal is not immune to shoplifters. In fact, it is the bane of many retail establishments. Also termed as five finger discount or shrinkage within the retail industry, shoplifting is an issue known to all but usually overlooked. Shoplifters are mostly amateurs. But there are groups of skilled professionals who make a living out of it. Trained staffs know how to handle the situation. However at times, the skills of the shoplifter beat even the most gazeful eyes of the storekeeper.
She has blackmailed me into pure confidentiality.
Shoplifters are mostly amateurs.
Sometimes, I am just too famished to worry about the fact that the owners will beat me up when they find out. So I just shoplift! 72 N Av yaata • m ag h 2 0 6 7
Says Chandrama Pun, proprieter, Chocolate; “There are so many instances when shoppers shoplift. It’s a sordid thing to do is what I think but there seems to be no concrete solution.” According to her, the rate increases when the cameras go unmaintained. The reasons for shoplifting could be many - poverty, greed, lack of money at that certain time and certain compulsions such as hunger. Suraj, a street child says; “Sometimes, I am just too famished to worry about the fact that the owners will beat me up when they find out. So I just shoplift!” While some may do it due to compulsions, shoplifting for most individuals is rarely about greed or poverty. For some it is the urge to seek thrills from doing something reckless. For others, it could be about people struggling with their own personal conflicts and needs. Cases of rich kids shoplifting abound. Classified as “impulse disorder” under Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV), referred to more generally as kleptomania, these patients shoplift out of depression. Strange as it may sound, instances all across the globe support the notion. “I have a kleptomaniac sister who steals anything from a small pencil to coats and bags. She has blackmailed me into pure confidentiality and does not want to see a doctor. I avoid going to malls with her,” a high school student was quoted as saying.

Favorite Shoplifter Clothing “Crotch-walking” is a technique used by women wearing full skirts and dresses. They simply place the merchandise between their thighs and walk away. Baggy clothes in general are good places to hide stolen items. Some people have extra pockets or hooks sewn into coats and jackets to hide from the prying eyes of the storeowners. Beware of the customer with a large coat who keeps his hand in the coat pocket. Some shoplifters have cut slits in the pocket lining, so they can reach for items without being seen. They may make a big deal out of inspecting an item while the other hand slips out and grabs something.
Shoplifting has also become a recreational activity for many teenage shoppers. Sampada, 21 says; “Back when I was in high school and we were out for a class visit, we shoplifted like a crazy bunch of kids. We were not committing any crime as far as we knew, we had money in our purses but we just wanted to have fun, and nobody ever found out. Those were some of the best days in my life.” Prajeesh, 19 says; “The best shoplifting moment I remember is shoplifting few bottles of whiskey and red label and some pizzas. It was the wildest shoplifting spree. We were in a group. And we ran like madheads. We were all drunk, so there was no guilt. Just some fun!” Now what do the retailers who have been plagued by shoplifters have to say? Many report that shoplifting has a significant effect on their bottom line, even though they cannot account for the exact numbers in inventory shrinkage. What may seem a fun activity to a few teenage revelers may put a serious dent on the profitability of mom-and-pop stores. How then can retailers lessen the severity? Opting for CCTV, EAS, uniformed guards, exit inspections, trained salespeople, close customer services and locked merchandises are few strategies to lessen shoplifting but they may be out of the price point of many small storekeepers. Perhaps the best strategy is to be vigilant, but also increase the number of sales staff. Not only would it decrease the case of thefts, it would also boost customer experience. States proprietor, DS Collection; “We have never had to deal with such a case until now. We have a good deal of salespeople around for customers with those aims to deter them from attempting to shoplift.” Attitude, another clothing store in Kathmandu Mall,
SO HAVE YOU SHOPLIFTED? however, has been wedged in these fixes. “We have a tough time breaking it off to the shoplifters.” The fact that shoplifting is widespread in Nepal is nothing to be surprised about. “It’s the law that is to blame for.” says Sambhavi, a fourth year law student in India. “There are no strict rules against shoplifting. In India, they have a section in the CRPC act. In Nepal, there is no declared act or a whole.” says Rastra, a second year law student. If legal deterrence is not an option, what can then be expected? “We have no fixed strategy to deal with shoplifting. If the item is not expensive and we find out then we just embarrass the culprit and let him go. But if the item is expensive, we have the police deal with it.” says Shanti, owner of a mini mart in Nakhipot. To all those shoplifters who have been lucky enough to go unpunished todate, think of the consequences. You will embarass not only yourself, but also your parents and your friends. Should you have fun by putting somebody else’s throat on the line? There are other ways to have fun! There are other ways to seek a thrill rush. And if you happen to be a kleptomaniac, there are ways to cope with it. Seek a doctor. Next time you are caught stealing, you may not be lucky. There are cases of mob-lynching. Think of the people whose livelihoods maybe impacted by your act. Live and let live! Note: Names changed for the purpose of confidentiality.
Are You a Kleptomaniac? Do you RELATE to any of these states? Recurrent failure to resist impulses to steal objects that are not needed for personal use or their monetary value. Increasing sense of tension immediately before committing the theft. Pleasure or relief at the time of committing the theft. Stealing is not committed to express anger or vengeance and is not in response to a delusion or hallucination.

Wedding Toast Wedding Story I hadn’t been to a single wedding this season, but then my friend insisted that I come over to her cousin’s wedding. I readily complied but was nervous as I didn’t know anyone. Not even the groom or the bride. I planned on dressing heavy as it was very cold and the party was in the evening. But my friend (being the fashionista that she is!) made me wear just the saree, draped so tightly that I had difficulty walking in the heels (that too she urged me to wear!). What was supposed to be a night of fun turned out to be disastrous as I couldn’t dance in my heels nor could I enjoy the party because of the biting cold.We went back home all cold and she profusely apologized. I had been to this wedding about 3 years ago while I was in the States. A very close of mine friend got married to this gorgeous looking guy (one of our other girlfriend had a huge crush on him too). Everything was going so perfectly on the Grand day. It was time to make a toast. I’m sure they did a good rehearsal the night before. Then, Marica (the one I mentioned earlier, half drunk or maybe HURT) makes a toast. “I’m happy for both of you. Sad that you’ll be busy from now on. I just have a thing to say - Marriage is not a word. It’s a sentence…. (as in a life sentence).” She bursted out crying and we had take care of her. It was sad to see our one friend celebrating the time of her life and the other friend soaked in sorrow of love.

Wardrobe malfunction My best friend was getting married to his girlfriend. Both of them being Christians, the wedding was to take place in a church. He asked me to be his best man and I came from America to attend his wedding. On the day of the ceremony, I put on my best suit and was ready to do my duty of a best man which required me to stand on the stage behind my friend throughout the ceremony. Right before the minister conducted the ceremony, my friend signalled me saying my zipper was open. I started getting nervous. Tiny beads of sweat started forming all over my forehead. Since there were hundreds of people watching me, I felt stiff and couldn’t zip my pants. All I could do was cross my hands and place it in front of (you know where). When the wedding pictures came out, I became the laughing stock among my friends circle. Not even in a single picture had I smiled and the whole time I was in the same position. One of the most awkward moments of my life! Suman Maharjan Baluwater
Embarrassing wedding day My wedding day arrived but it didn’t turn out the way it was supposed to!!! When I think of that day, I feel so embarrassed. I was wearing a Lehenga which was extremely long for me. My sister had warned me not to wear that lehenga but I didn’t listen to her. I was having a very uncomfortable time with my Lehenga. Everything was going very smoothly - the party, the music, and the people. After eating some dinner, we had to dance. Well, I am not a very big fan of dancing especially in front of a bunch of people literally staring at me! So, my husband and I stepped onto the dance floor. They played us a slow song. Everything was going fine until the time I tripped on my Lehenga, lost control and broke the heel of my stiletto. I was literally on the floor with my husband. Everybody then started to laugh at us. It was so embarrassing that I wanted to leave the party and go home asap! The lesson I learnt was not wear clothes that are too long and heels that are too high! :) Suzanna Thapa Lazimpat
Wedding memories It was a few years ago at my best friend’s marriage. I was all too excited, obviously! And I was all jumpy with the plans, dresses, guest lists, decorations and what not. In the reception, the mood was a little slow and I started feeling bored. This one guy was checking me out ever since the whole thing started. <Lord, was he cute!> A couple of vodka shots was all the courage I needed. I approached him and I only remember until the time that I was in the dance floor. I remember faint laughing faces and then my vision blurred. My friends told me the story but I still doubt they told me whole of it because the next day I saw this guy and smiled, he averted his eyes. -Bani, Sinamangal

Nepal: the perfect tourist destination?
We have been blessed with a beatiful country. Our mountains are majestic and mystical. Our smiles are disarming and our hospitality is legendary. Nepal has a charm unlike anyother country. So we heard many times over. As we prepare for Visit Nepal Year 2011, Navyaata hit the streets of Kathmandu to talk to people on the other side of the fence - those who come to Nepal from faraway lands. How do they see Nepal? What are their viewpoints on Nepal, the country, and our preparations for the ‘kuire’s? They have each come to Nepal for various reasons and have fallen in love with the country and its people. So read on to know more about what they think about Nepal and, more importantly, its people.
Nepal: the perfect tourist destination? Text by: Shreeja Karki Photos by: Sonam Topke
Shirley Bredal
Shirley Bredal is Danish but Nepal is home to her. A businesswoman by profession, she goes to Denmark twice a year for fashion shows but always finds her way back here. Shirley has been coming to Nepal for more than three years and she has a house and lots of friends here whom she calls her biggest assets. What do you like about Nepal? I’m in love with the Nepalese people. I have lots of friends here and they are quite different in comparison to people from other countries - they are warm, open and affectionate. I also like the rich culture and the environment of the country. Even though Nepalese people are traditional, they are willing to be moderate and accommodate people like me and I think that’s a really big thing to do. To embrace others like members of your own family takes a lot of trust. The surroundings are quite different from that of Denmark. Nepal has plains, hills and even mountains but Denmark is very flat! Memorable events in Nepal The Nepalese wedding is an event that I deeply fancy. Weddings back home are small events and much more about the couple than the family. That a 1000 people or so can fit into a day of ceremony is simply amazing. The whole ambience is lively and people are dressed in various colors.
Your take on Visit Nepal 2011 I’m quite worried actually. A lot is being said but not much seems to be going on. Malaysia and India have these promotional videos and are aired occasionally on TV but Nepal seems to lack in this area.
What are things that you dislike about Nepal? I simply hate the traffic out here. I am stuck in jams most of the time, when I could actually be doing a lot of productive activities. Sometimes, I think that I spend more time in taxi than anywhere else! I am not a very big fan of the social restrictions either- especially the 12 o’ clock closing time on restaurants and nightclubs. Most of my friends work till late hours but I cannot go out and have fun with them because of the ban. The time when the night has finally started for us is the time when these restaurants have to close down. There also seems to be a lot of construction work going on. But that does have a positive sign to it rapid development. Another drawback of the Nepalese community is that everybody seems to know everyone else. 82 Ndoesn’t Av yaataseem • m agto h 2be 0 6much 7 send There of privacy.
Suppose you were made the tourism minister of Nepal for a day, what changes would you bring? There’s a mystery about Nepal; people find it strange and very exciting. At the same time, they assume Nepal to be one big pile of adventure and that it is very expensive. That is not true at all. Mount Everest is not all there is to Nepal. I would thus, definitely promote smaller treks and other cultural activities. I would also make people experience the different flavors of the country, like the Newari cuisine. It is so vast and there are various delicacies. This really intrigues people.

The first time she came, she stayed for 3 months but she felt that was too short a time. That’s why she started looking for projects so that she could come and work in Nepal itself. What do you like about Nepal? Momos! I love momos. I even went to Gaighat just to have the momos out there as those there are proclaimed to be the best in the country. Memorable events in Nepal. I once went to Phaplu as I had a meeting with some of my clients. All of us were in a hurry and we ended up getting lost in the mountains! We had to trek for 11 and half hours, but that exhaustive trip, surprisingly, was the best experience of my life. The next day I was all sore and I was sun burnt thoroughly, so I had to take rest for more than 3 days! Everything seems to be messy here but simple at the same time. For example,
the roads and the traffic rules are haywire but there seems to be very little accidents despite the flaws. Back in France, even though everything is smooth, a lot of accidents take place.
Nepal: the perfect tourist destination?
What don’t you like about Nepal? I don’t like the taxi drivers mainly because they bargain a lot. On days that I am lucky when the taxi runs on the meter, I still get disappointed because the taxi drivers take long roundabout routes instead of the straight ones. Your take on Visit Nepal 2011. I don’t think there are going to be many changes but at the same time, I hope things are a bit more organized. I want to see more availability of the basic infrastructures like hot water and electricity, but when there’s shortage of drinking water, hot water is probably a far-fetched dream! If you were the tourism minister for a year, what would you do? There’s only thing that I would like to do and that is to take off the 12 o’clock ban on restaurants and nightclubs. After a long day of work, I’m usually looking forward to partying with friends but the imposition of the law ruins it all!
Ricardo
A Mexican business man, Ricardo has been in Nepal for 3 months now. He owns his own business in Mexico. He was in Switzerland studying to achieve higher diploma in Culinary Management, when he met several Nepalese classmates and their warm demeanor attracted him to the country. Memorable events in Nepal I would like to answer this with my impressions of the country. First impression: I panicked in the beginning. The airport officers took my passport for some information. I was asked to pay in dollars but I had only Swiss Francs. So I had to scurry around the airport to exchange money. The people who were supposed to pick me up didn’t arrive, so I had to take a cab straight to Thamel. Second: I felt very vulnerable when I saw so much poverty and suffering in the streets and could not do anything about it. Third: I quickly fell in love with the people and the food. The Nepalese are really hospitable. Now I have lots of friends here and I enjoy partying with them. Nepali people are very warm. Earlier, I was with some people who were lighting a fire to keep warm. nowhere, a guy offered me a bubblegum and in exchange I gave him a cigarette. We both couldn’t speak each other’s languages but there was this unspoken connection between us. Another time, a woman simply offered me an apple just because she felt like so. This is the uniqueness of Nepalese relationships and you don’t find it anywhere else in the world. What do you like about Nepal? The people, the music and the food. Nepali live bands are simply amazing. Nothing compares to the Nepali dudes. The country definitely has the best cover bands. What are the things that you don’t like about the country? I really dislike the government and the decisions they take. They don’t seem to realize that money is a tool to construct and not for self pleasure. No one seems to care about the environment. There’s trash just everywhere and no recycling processe. I also noticed that certain people present themselves as humble in front of tourists but in front of their own people, they are rude and cunning. On a rate of 1 to 10, what will you rate your experience of Nepal? 10 certainly. Oh no, 11!

DRIBBLE, JUMP, S H O O T SPECIAL/feature
By Ashish Baiju
If you have seen the streetballerz at AND1, you know how crazy basketball can be. Mad dribbles, crazy shots and crowd pleasing stunts. Do we have those ballerz in Nepal? Navyaata scoured the best teams in Nepal (with generous help from our Facebook fans) to uncover the basketball gems in our country.
“With Bipin sir as our coach, we can beat any team in the country!” : they say
Morgan International College Morgan International College is a powerhouse in women basketball. The team won 3-on-3 Nobel Cup and put a formidable show during the Morgan Cup. Their team spirit, their passion for victory and their love for the game is what drives them. Nora Gurung, the team captain, was part of the national junior basketball squad that participated in Singapore. Contrary to widely held beliefs, the girls disagree that “height” is a key factor in the game and that it is a sport only for the giants. “What counts is your skill and your heart. We have proven that there is no shortage of skillful players in Nepal.” Sadly, most players think that their basketball journey will come to a halt after graduation, as they see no career in it. We hope that landscape will change with more sponors taking up the basketball game in Nepal.
Prime Sports Club
Prime is the new kid on the block. The team is known for its team-work, which, the girls say, extends beyond the court. “Not just on court, we’re also a team outside of it, helping each other in times of trouble,” says the captain, Nayana Shakya. For some in the team, basketball is not just a hobby but also a passion they want to stick to even in the future. They said they would love to opt for a career in basketball, but what besets them is that compared to men, women teams don’t get enough opportunities to play at the international level. Most of the players have also excelled in other fields. Nayana Shakya, the captain, is also a national level swimmer, and Jaya Shrestha is a job holder at Nepal Development Bank. Like the rest of the teams, Prime girls also think that increasing the number of tournaments can give the sport the much needed step up. Also colleges need to reorient the ways they look at sport and find ways to integrate it to regular coursework. “That way, basketball will not just remain as a pastime sport, but will become many athletes’ dream to find a career in it. If that happens, athletes will definitely bring more pride to the nation, and Prime avows to be a major contributor!”

“We pretty much reign the basketball here!” – Rabindra Maharjan (Maskey)
Golden Gate Club Golden Gate has been a constant name in the finals of every major tournament for more than three years. The players don’t bite their tongues in dishing out some good ole trash talking, “We pretty much reign the basketball here!” The team no doubt has the strongest lineup: three national level players, two +2 level best players and others who have years of experience. Most of the players have also been coaching different schools in the Valley since years. “We were not as fortunate as today’s kids who get to play the ball right from their school years. But when we started to playing at college, we made up our minds to make it to the national squad; we trained so hard and now here we are!” The team practices on a regular basis at the TU basketball court in Kirtipur. Much as they love the game, none of the players consider a career in basketball a smart choice. Even the players who are in the national squad think it is impossible to earn a decent living by solely depending on the sport as a career. “At present, the best we can hope to make of ourselves is to become a coach to school kids,” says a member.
Athletics in Nepal, as we know, is in its early stage of development and the NASA club is determined to change the scenario that sportspeople cannot make a living out of the games. – The Team
NASA Club
At seven on every alternate mornings of the week, you will find a group sweating it out at Shankardev Campus’ basketball court. You might not recognize this group of oldies right away, but you just have to see them practicing a while to figure out that they are the best in the national arena today. NASA Club beat the reigning champs, Golden Gate to claim victory at the recently concluded National Championship. The team boasts of one national player and three who have played at national level in the past. An experienced coach, a well-built infrastructure and a financial backing goes a long way towards motivating players and creating a winning team. Athletics in Nepal, as we know, is in its early stage of development and the NASA club is determined to change the scenario that sports people cannot make a living out of the games. The club frequently organizes talent hunts to give morale boost and as much exposure as possible to the young players. The team’s final word: Come and play all-star basketball with us every morning right at the town’s public court and we’ll score hoops at the net like champs! send us your feedback at editor@nav yaata.com

Taxed by the Taxi navyaata/special
Text By Abhaya Subba Weise
A musician with a style, the band member of Abhaya and the Steam Injuns, Abhaya Subba Weise many may not know is also a writer at heart. Through Abhaya’s blog, this svelte lady will be sharing her thoughts and much more. We have all loved the way she rocks all her performances, and we know her words will do the same. Read on!!!
“Get out of my car,” he fumes. “Not until I put it into your thick cunning head that you are a thief!” “It’s going to cost you two hundred!” he says nonchalantly, simultaneously spitting out of the window with Rajnikant precision. I sit behind in the little taxi hapless with disgust as I quickly roll up my window to avoid any wind travelled sprays of human spew. “But it’s only from Thamel to Kumari Hall…a mere 10 minutes away.” I argue. He turns his head towards me – even as he drives and looks at me carefully. I panic. “Please look at the road, dammit. What is this sudden hike in price? Haven’t you put the metre on? I have never ever paid two hundred for such a short distance!” I insist. The taxi slowly stops at the side of the road – “Are you paying me two hundred or should I just leave you here “he says. I baulk. It’s an impossible part of the road. If I walk, then I am sure to miss the movie by a good fifteen minutes not to mention the hostile greetings I am sure to get from my friends …but if I let him have his way, then I am succumbing to his blackmail. It takes me exactly 20 seconds to give in. On this occasion, I am a person without any principles. A citizen who cares more about her shoes with ridiculous heels that cannot walk the streets of Kathmandu rather than teach that taxi driver a lesson “Okay, two hundred it is!” We both heave a sigh of relief as the engine starts again. He now drives triumphantly while I try to quiet my raging conscience. 88 N Av yaata • m ag h 2 0 6 7
This has not really been the first time that I have been ripped off by a taxi driver. Talk to anybody in K city and they will more often than not have a story of the swindling taxi driver. The haggling, the unpleasantness, not to mention the utter disdain they have for us who don’t happen to be foreigners. I can only imagine the plight of the miserable tourists who get taken for a ride by the same scornful drivers. I do happen to have a theory though when it comes to these transporters. Chances are, the older they are the more honest they will be. The younger they are, expect the fireworks – from meters that have been meddled with, to music that will be impossibly unpleasant, to that strange funky toe jam smell and of course the demand for a spiked taxi fare. Not surprisingly this is not always foolproof. You can have an old man who curses you with impertinence and demands an incredible fare or the young man who is polite and goes by the meter. But this ensuing observation is almost always true. Finding an honest taxi driver is like winning a lottery. We feel like destiny’s child, an ecstasy almost as good as getting the perfect shoes. (I said almost)
just so that we can stay in our contented zones .Look at how we have let it slip by, we’ve had a country without a Prime Minister for practically half the year, a country without a plan, a country whose slogan could be “bhaei halchha” “Chalchha” (ambiguous remarks that has made us indolent and incompetent).
In all likelihood we are presented with opportunities to stand up for our rights every day. We keep silent when the young boy on his motorbike honks at us insolently to give him way on the pedestrian pavement. Yes, our blood boils but we find it easier to shift ourselves to one side rather than confront the young man – to tell him that he has no right to be on the pavement, let alone have the impudence to honk at us. We keep silent when taxi drivers fleece us on a regular basis. We keep silent when we see our friends employ young children below the age of 15 as house helps…we let the little things slip by
At this point I see a traffic police man quite by chance sauntering by the nearby shop. “I think I’ll just complain to the police man there!’” I think aloud. “Bring it on Lady,” he smirks. “I can buy him off for a fifty!”

“Okay, here we are,” he leers. He has now started to light a cigarette. This taxi driver who has made me introspect about my shameless submission is now in for a shock. I yank his unlit cigarette from his mouth and throw it on the seat beside him. “You can have this two hundred but you will not smoke until I get out of this car.” “Arre is this any way to treat anybody?” he rages. “Is this the way you rob people? Your metre says it’s seventy five and you have just stolen Rs.125 from me” I retort. “Get out of my car,” he fumes. “Not until I put it into your thick cunning head that you are a thief!” I stubbornly stand my ground. “How am I a thief? (Expletives), I think you are really going out of hand. I reached you here at our agreed price, didn’t I (expletives)?”

I am nineteen years old and I have been told that I am the most complicated person on planet earth. I have never had a stable relationship in my life and I don’t think its going to change any time soon. I’ve been on many dates but somehow they have been disappointing. Some guys are ugly, some are cute but arrogant, some too short, some are extra possessive, some have a commitment phobia and others are just too difficult to read. I have never been satisfied and, hence, I have always remained on the search. My friends have been saying ‘you girl need a customized boyfriend’ and ‘you certainly aren’t going to be happy with a normal one’. But seriously why can’t a cute guy have the tall guy’s height, the bad boy’s attitude and the emo’s voice. I have never seen such a combo YET! Today, once and for all, I am going to define my ideal guy and hopefully get him! You may argue he doesn’t exist and blah blah, but I believe he does. First and foremost, he has to have an awesome body, think Choi Siwon from Super Junior. The other “Super Junior” boys are hot too but Siwon with his hot body... OMG he is just way hotter. When I think of a guy’s body, I first think of the abs - the perfect six pack. I hate to see a fat guy and his large tummy. Boy hit the gym!! Think GERALD BUTLER IN 300. You can actually see his abs shine. My guy has to look like he can fight with the bad boys, not run away. And yes sometimes it just takes one look. Those eyes say things without talking. Who doesn’t love Josh Harnett’s eyes? Those perfect eyes will make you fall in love everytime you see them.
BODY
Choi Siwon
His face has to be flawless. Ummm.. perfect tan, deep cuts and high cheek bones? Johnny Depp. Yeah, my man has to be cute if not handsome. Confidence baby! I’ve seen guys with zero confidence. Didn’t your mama teach you that even if you dont have it pretend like you got it. I know for a fact that even if I hit my head hard and turn into a complete different person, I would never date a guy who has no confidence. Confidence is sexy! My guy has to be humble and down to earth. I hate when guys are all into dough and are showing them off. Dude that doesn’t make you look cool. It makes you look like a douche bag. It’s so not fine, unless you are trying to impress some gold-digging wannabes.
customized
He has to be tall. What I mean by tall is 5 11 or taller. I know I am short but I have always had a thing for tall guys and I don’t know why. Guess they are just hotter than the rest. Think the pairing of Hayden Christensen and Rachel Bilson. They were magic!!
HONESTY BABE. Honest men are rare. My man is gonna be one in a million. So yes he has to be honest. By the way, not so honest as in telling me that I look fat in my new pair of jeans. He should know when to be honest and when to hide. Chicks dig guys with a dimple. You know who you are. Matthew McConaughey has one and he makes me wabble like a duck. Hot stuff! Got MOLES! Yes they make you stand out. You do and that just makes your dimples look cuter. Another important point, he should have a great voice and play the guitar. I have always wished and secretly prayed that my guy sings me a song and plays the guitar. Well, that has never happened yet. So my guy should be like John Mayer minus his speed in dating! HAIR! I have seen some bizarre hair on men. Some are crazy colored, others have extra brittle hair and some are plain bald. I love good hair! My nephew has curly hair and he looks an eye candy. So guys out there, go to the parlour and get Gu Gun Pyo’s hair. Okay! After all the honest and cute stuff you are probably thinking where does bad boys fit into my equation. Well it doesn’t hurt to have a bad guy if he is really into you and only you. I mean which girl doesn’t like bad boys who is ‘real sweet’ to her. They are unpredictable, and spontaneous. Yumm leather jackets, wayfarers, and the bullet ride. It’s all part of their short-lived charm. And I totally wouldn’t mind if it is like the movie thing where he’ll change for you... Awhhhh! Innovative. Yes, I like a man with a plan. Well, dumb boys are a big NO NO! Showoffs better walk away. Assholes aren’t permitted into my life. This is getting to be a pretty long list, right? I know at least some of you guys must be cursing me right now and some just think that guy just doesn’t exist at all. But I’d like to believe he does and at this very moment he’s probably looking for me. If you think you are the right one, you should just go curl your hair already! All you single girls out there, know that you aren’t complicated. You just haven’t found the right guy to understand you. And the rest who are into a relationship, well think twice and check whether your guy is worth it cuz you totally are!! Catch ya later!! hukasaka. Love M.

Text Junu Gurung
Punk rock was new to Uges when he was just a teenager. Heavily influenced while in Singapore, Uges started with the drums and later formed a punk band after he moved to the big apple city aka New York city. Brothers in blood, both born and raised in Singapore, Uges and Bz, are dedicated to their music not just for fame. Since 2006, they have been touring and doing shows in America, Malaysia and Singapore. They have been making their videos for their songs themselves and have been successful to pull in a huge group of fans/listeners/viewers on facebook, youtube and myspace. The next big step for them is that they are planning to release their first album internationally.
“Kapal thado banaudai ma hudaina punk, rancid ko tshirt lauda hudaina punk, punk ko naam ma kalank oi oi oi oi” was how the lyrics went when I first watched them in their self made video in youtube. True indeed. Wearing a skinny jeans with mohawk and studs doesn’t make you a punk. A message to all the posers stating they are disgrace to punk. With fun lyrics, yet with a message, and an entertaining video with bloopers, was what made me inquisitive to know more about this band called Normal Academic.

The facebook search box took me to their fan page where I could gain access to more of their latest songs and updates with their raw pictures and videos. Fortunately the band manager, also the vocalist and guitarist of the band, Uges, was kind enough to spare some time to skype with me to share about their music journey.
Despite starting with the drums, Uges is now the guitarist and also the vocalist of the band. The band was formed in 2004 but it was officially called Normal Academic in the year 2006. During his school days in Singapore, they had three levels according to the grades. He was assigned to ‘The Express’ level as he was excellent in his studies. Later his mind was diverted to music, gigs and jammings. His grades dropped and eventually he was assigned to ‘The Normal Academic’ level. Later on when he formed this band and had to decide a name, he simply named in Normal Academic because of those days when he started his music. Bz, the drummer, was actually influenced by his own brother, Uges. Bz used to play Uges’s drum set and always tried impressing him. Soon after when the brothers moved to the big apple city aka New York city, Uges wanted a drummer for his band and looked around. However he didn’t realize his own brother was a perfect fit for the band. The brothers have been doing something they love till then. Nonetheless, Yogen and Sonche used to be the vocalist and the bassist for the band respectively. Uges being the vocalist and guitarist of the band is also the band manager. Both the brothers are currently working on their new album which they are expecting to release it in few months. The untitled album which is most probably going to be titled “Normal Academic” will include punk songs with few acoustic songs and will hit the international market soon.
The band has its own record label called “Gharmai Record Production”. The name says it all; it was named “Gharmai Record” as the band has their own home studio where the entire recordings take place. Uges adds that Gharmai Record Production is further coming up with a CD containing unreleased songs from various Nepali artists, both from mainstream and underground, around the globe. This project is mainly focused in promoting Nepalese artists/bands and also to show unity.
navyaa/MUSIC
In his early teens, Uges would follow up his senior brothers to punk gigs and jams. Punk was THEN new to Uges. Nevertheless he was soon listening to the bands like “The Ramones”, “Greenday” and “Rancid”. He states that his senior brothers are his major influences. Therefore, he was enthused to form his own punk band.
Both the brothers, Uges and Bz, have just spent few weeks in Nepal and they both are looking forward to visit Nepal by the next year. Uges says, “Some of our fans in facebook have asked us to come to Nepal and have a concert.” Therefore, they think that it would be great to have a concert and to perform in their motherland in front of their own people. On the last note both the brothers are really grateful for their supporters in Nepal and a shout out to their Singaporean Bhanjaaz and Bhanjiz.
The fans-to-be of the band can get access to their songs from their facebook fan page. They also have their self made videos in youtube. You can simply search them typing Normal Academic or Gharmai Record in facebook and youtube respectively.
Having performed in various countries like Singapore, Malaysia and in various states of the USA, they have a diverse nationality of fans and supporters. The band is mostly known to the nepalese youths all around the globe, a few more of other nationalities and in the USA itself. ‘Gahiro Aankha’, ‘Parkhi Rahechu’, ‘Singapura’, ‘Yeha Ko Challan’ and ‘Cha, Char, Cha’ are the most frequently played numbers for their fans during their gigs. On the other hand, they have already started playing few songs like ‘The Tragic Song’ and ‘The A’ from their new album and the responses have been pretty good for them too. Uges says, “It is nice to hear from them because they are always suggesting and supportive.” Having small gigs every here and there, they will be doing a spring tour with a band all around the USA soon.

Adventurer trekking solo across the Himalayan region
Meet Sunil Tamang. His is not a name known to many. But if he accomplishes what he has set out to do in 2011, that will change. Sunil is in a mission that is quite admirable, awe inspiring and not for the faint of heart. “I do what I do and I love travelling in mountain,” reads Sunil Tamang’s blog entry in his website www.suniltamang.com. A trekking enthusiast, Sunil is preparing for his solo tour dubbed ‘Trek for Change- 2011’ which he plans to start from January. With the motive of bringing to light the ill effects of climate change on the mountains, this young trekker intends to travel to all the fifteen Himalayan districts alone within 210 days. Sunil is a native of Rasuwa, a remote district in Central Nepal. Growing up in Syaphru Bensi, a mountainous village in Rasuwa, he has always been close to the mountains. They are where his heart lies; they are where he feels at home. As a young boy Sunil would often assist his father who was a farmer in the fields trying hard to cultivate in the barren and infertile land. Walking in the Himalayas to reach their cultivable land brought him closer to their timeless beauty. The sight of Himalayas has always been a soothing sensation to him. They fill him with immense pleasure and passion. A dream was born: to one day conquer them all. Time will tell if he is able to accomplish the dream. But with age, his zeal to explore the majestic peaks has only increased, making him appreciate the mountains even more.
Sunil has participated in many short and long expeditions to the Himalayas. On October 2010, he climbed the Island Peak, which lies 6189 metre above sea level; his first ascent ever. This trip made him familiar with the dangers inherent in climbing the great mountains. But he is undeterred. If anything, this has just increased his desire to be a great expeditioner. He understands the need to be careful. He has set out to study the trek routes in detail so that he is aware of the risks and can take appropriate measures to combat the risks. “Trek for Change 2011 is not a fulfilment of my dream to explore the mountains, it is rather an undertaking to enhance 96 N Av yaata • m ag h 2 0 6 7

our understanding about the negative impact that the mountains and the people living there are facing due to global warming, he says. On his journey he wants to generate as much awareness as he can about the effects of global warming in the Himalayas. His mission is to draw the attention of all local, national and international communities for tackling the rapid global warming and their adverse effects on the flora and fauna of the Himalayas. 2011 being the Tourism Year provided him with the perfect time for his journey. Through his journey he hopes to encourage young Nepalese to seek adventure for a cause.
Trek for Change 2011 is being sponsored by Danielle Marchal of Belgium, Nicolas Duval and Delphine of France and Thomas Junker and Group from Germany. We at Navyaata wish this young enthusiast all the best for his journey. We hope more of the youngsters will hit the trails to discover Nepal, be it for a purpose or just for some time off the hectic city life. We are working with Sunil to follow his journey through the mountains. wellness\Hemanta andShishir ritus:
\Hemanta and Shishir ritus:
Hemanta and Shishir ritus, which start from November and end on February, are marked as winter according to Ayurveda. All three doshas are balanced in early winter and though Vata tends to be aggravated during late winter, winter is a healthy season on the whole. According to Ayurveda, winter is the time to nourish the body for the whole year for it is the season of increased appetite and better digestion. Unlike during the summer time and rainy season when light meals are recommended, one can eat heavy meals with some extra fat in winter. Similarly, it is also the time to nourish and protect the skin from low humidity and freezing cold. Cold weather causes skin to get dry and flaky, lips become chapped and hair gets brittle and dry; to guard against these, a lot of moisturizing is required during the cold season. Moisturizing has to be external as well as internal- you do not need to go on a fat free diet this season. That does not mean indulging in French fries and oily fast food; rather, it is the time to have healthy fats such as whole milk, yogurt, good quality ghee and fresh butter, in a moderate quantity. Oils taken through your diet keeps the body oleated and skin looks supple and smooth naturally. Of course, one needs to drink a lot of warm water or herbal teas to keep the skin hydrated as well. Diet-wise, lots of squash like pumpkins, zucchini etc, black lentils (daal), tender greens, sweet berries, ripe citrus fruits (such as oranges and grapefruits), nuts (such as almonds, walnuts and cashews), warm whole milk, meat soup and hot herbal tea are recommended for this season.â€Śâ˜ş
Application of external moisturizers is also recommended. Avoid exposure to extreme wind and

wellness\Hemanta andShishir ritus: cold, wear warm cloths and always wear a natural lip balm and chemical free moisturizer. Give yourself a warm-oil hair and body massage followed by steam once a week. Your feet and hands tend to get cracked easily during this season so treat yourself with hand and foot massages with warm oil followed by a hand and foot soak once or twice a week with warm water and few drops of essential oil. As always, avoid using harsh soap based cleansers since they strip the lipids out of skin making skin look dryer; instead, use natural, soap free cleanser. You can always make one at home using besan, neem, honey and milk. Use facial mask made with rich fruits like avocados and bananas mixed with thick yogurt and egg, once a week is really helpful to your skin; do make sure you are not grabbing these straight out of refrigerator. Everything has to be at room temperature or warmer. We should realize that a holistic approach to skin care is the best way to have a healthy and radiant skin. Empower the body to fight the dryness externally and internally, and you will achieve fresh, smooth and soft skin even in winter.

Hi Tenzing, Are see through leggings still in vogue? I love wearing them but I rarely see girls who wear them anymore. - Enisha Pradhan, 21
Enisha!!! For 2011, see through fabrics are very much in trend… Leggings, tops, dresses and almost everything which is see through is in fashion. Nepal is a little conservative on that front, so I think see through legging teamed up with some other layers will definitely rock!!! Go for it. You have a green chit from me!!! Lol… and remember every one follows fashion trends but there are very few who create them!!!

Hi Tenzin, I have a really petite body. I always end up buying clothes from the kids department due to my body frame. What can I wear so that my body doesn’t look as tiny because I am about to start working and I don’t want to look like a kid anymore. - Devyani Shiwakoti, 21
First of all Devyani, you don’t need to feel embarrassed to buy clothes from kids department as we all must be aware that these days kids clothing line are much more fashionable than adult ones… How I wish I could buy some as well!!! And about your petite body frame, don’t wear something that’s body hugging… Rather go for loose silhouette… and when you start working on it then I don’t think you will need me anymore!!!

I have to go to my farewell party. I am not very tall but I am planning on wearingthese high waist flare pants with a simple V-necked shirt tucked inside it and a vest. Do you think it will look good on me? - Numa Gurung, 20
Well Numa if you are going to a farewell party that has been thrown for you then you should make sure that you stand out in a crowd and to do so, a high waist skirt totally works but make sure its above knee or may be somewhere near mid-thigh. This will tend to make your legs look longer!!! Don’t opt for flare skirt rather make it more fitted… And pencil heel is a must!!! If you can, make it more than 3 inches!!! Have a blast Numa!!!

I have so many pimples on my face. And right now, I am taking medicine to get rid of the pimples, as referred by a dermatologist. But, it is all the same; in fact, the pimples are getting bigger and darker every time I check myself in the mirror. Please, help me! -Amrit Lama
Amrit, it seems like your pimples are getting infected which means you should seek the help of a dermatologist. However, we would like to recommend you Isadora problem solver, treat and cover concealer sticks, as it treats and conceals the problematic acne. I hope this will work for you!
You have a nice name Misika. You have to choose the right shade that blends well with your skin tone. I suggest you never to go for cream based colours which will stand out against your dark skin tone. Instead opt for darker beige based shades. I am sure you will see a huge difference in your outlook, better than before for sure. My forehead is sunburnt because of which my forehead looks darker than the colour tone of the rest of my face. What do I do to make my face have an even tone? -Tenzin Lama, Ekantakuna
Hi there! I am a 18 year old high school student. I like to look good and dress up well. But I have a problem and was wondering if you could help me. My problem is, I have a darker skin and when I apply foundations on my face, the difference in the colour tone of the skin on my face and my arms and neck can be seen easily. How do I get rid of this problem? What do I do to make them look similar?
To get an even tone on your face, you should use a good foundation. For that try Isadora high performance foundation. This foundation is available in six different shades so choose the one that goes well with your skin tone. All the best Tenzin !

I have a mongoloid look and my eyes are small. People often tease me by calling me ‘chinky’, ‘chinese’ or other names, even on the streets. I want my eyes to look larger and more attractive. Any tips on achieving that effect? -Niru Shakya, 18
To make your eyes look bigger, first start by lining your lower eye lid with white inlined kajal and then slolwly use a dark (preferably black or brown) shade besides the inlined kajal and smudge it gently. This will give the impressions that you have big eyes. You’ll find yourself with big-looking eyes and more attractive, definitely! Wish you all the best.

he most casual stroll around the gallis of the city will tell you stories. It will give you reasons - to smile, to feel, to wake up as a completely different human being! There is one completely Not Fashionable area in town. It remains unaffected by the clothing lines people in the other side of the town are desperate to take home. You will meet ‘baajes’ and ‘bojus’ walking barefoot in the winter mornings when you are shopping for the best shoes in town. Children play bhettai. The brands don’t matter. You get to hear conversations in pure Nepali. The buildings interlock themselves and you can touch the walls of one building and the other’s at the same time if you stretch your arms, (it’s miraculous - the feeling of touching TWO houses at once!), you have to hug your purse extremely tight as you walk in this area and avoid every stranger, khates will try hanging on to you at every chance they get. The galli isn’t where you’d really want to be in but gallis like these are the only remaining places in Nepal where you can re-learn how to feel. We met him here.
His name is Bal Bahadur Joshi. The front part of his set of teeth is missing. Time has wrinkled his countenance. Loktantra has him unaffected. He is a porter. His volume contradicts his occupation. He has seen good times and bad times more than I have. He is infinitely wiser than me, and he is undoubtedly more learned than me in every aspect. Yet he addresses me with a ‘tapai.’ Circumstances have turned him gravely polite. He is sixty six years old. 66.

he first time we noticed Bal Bahadur baaje, we noticed his bare feet. The wintry weather had us frozen and wearing double socks inside our pricey boots. And there he was, walking bare feet, carrying a huge sack filled with supplies. It looked heavy yes! It weighed heavier. We blandly followed him, trying to seem every bit inconspicuous. When we first explained him about Navyaata’s Make a Wish, he gave us a nod. After we made him eat some food in the shop he had just carried the supplies into, he smiled and made our hearts melt. His decorum stirred poignant moments. He would not say what he wanted to eat, he could not ask for water when he wanted to drink, he would just nod and smile. In the summer of 1956, an ebullient Balbahadur Joshi came to Kathmandu with eleven other friends by sitting on top of a truck. With overflowing dreams and a lively youth ahead, he was assured he was on the right track to a prosperous life. “Bhagwaan le k gardyo, k gardyo?” he utters these words as his eyes gaze to a distant place- where I am still unsure of.

After buying him warm clothes to fight the bitter weather, we asked him if he wanted to eat any more. He took us to “his” canteen. We tried taking him to established restaurants. He would not agree. After he was done with eating, he led us to his workplace. On our way, we could hear his friends calling out to him every now and then. They teased him about his new clothes. After passing the crowded gallis, we reached his workplace which was a gigantic godown filled with supplies. He was sixty six. And he carried colossal volumes. His work dares his body and his age. Yet he sticks to his contented grin. With a beaming proud face, he mentions, “I am diagnosed with none of any diseases so far!” At this point, I stare point blank on his scar below his eyes and wonder if he has ever had a real checkup.

you do, in the end, it is home you have to come back to.
6 Back to his work.
He worries about our nation, expresses dissatisfaction with his work and rues the constant inflation. “Sometimes I get Rs. 5, at other times it is 20. But nowadays, one cup of tea costs Rs. 10. So where does that leave people like us? I earn enough to be able to drink tea only!”
7 Bhagwaan reicha kyaare!
As we bid him goodbye and hand him some money, he thanks us. He clasps his hand to bid us goodbye. “Namaste. Navyaata lai ramro huncha. Bhagwan chha kyare!” (Maybe there IS a God after all!) We watched as he walked on. After he disappeared from sight, we headed back to our work. His smile kept on dancing in my eyes. The fact that he has never been anywhere else except Kathmandu kept me thinking - for a long long time.
“Namaste. Bhagwan chha kyare!” navyaata/ make a wish
When I inquired about him being bare feet, he answered ‘Wearing slippers is difficult for me. So, I walk bare feet.’ We bought him a pair of warm clothes, socks, a cap and a pair of shoes. On changing into new shoes, he turned into a happier Bal Bahadur baaje. As we passed through a vendor selling away models of our national flag, he said, “Nepal ko maaya laagcha!” We stopped to buy him one of the flags and he keenly posed for a picture.

Writing for Change
Laxmi Mali
Writer’s Say I was into politics since very young days of my college years. Though I never walked into mainstream politics, my readimgs and my writings are mainly focused on Marxist ideologies, political bias, social injustice and feminism. I like reading progressive books that breaks the myth of the social discrimination. Parijat has been one of my favorite writers. Her fiction, non-fiction and poems have inspired me a lot. I also love reading poems by Bhupi Sherchan, Gopal Prasad Rimal and contemporary writers like Shyamal, Govinda Bartaman, Aahuti and Niva Shah. But when it comes to books, I remember Anido pahadsangai by Parijat, Dharti ki Beti by Agnes Smedley (translated to Hindi by Swarnakanta), Ullar by Nayan Raj Pandey, Radha by Krishna Dharabasi, Swara Sajh by Govinda Bartaman among others. Among these books, I’d like to discuss, Anido pahadsangai, Dharti ki Beti and Ullar.
Three books of my preference:
L
axmi Mali is a teacher by profession. Though her interest in literature grew since her younger days, she published her first book, a much acclaimed poem collection, “Aago ko Yaam” (Seasons of Fire) only in 2062 B.S. “Aago Ko Yaam” was published by Mulyankan Prakashan Griha and is being translated into English. She mostly writes the poems on feminism, against social injustice and on selfsustainability. Her poems were widely popularized during Jana-andolan II. Her next poem collection “Aaru ka Phoolharu” (Peach blossoms) is due to release soon which is to be published by Sajha Prakashan.
Anido pahadsangai BY PARIJAT A novel by prominent Nepali writer Parijat is a must read on my list. It is an inspiration to all of the dominated class of people in the society specially the working class and women. The novel set up during 1970s explores the injustice and differences between two classes of people and urges the readers to stand against such injustices and fight for equality. Though the time period may differ now, those social prejudices, political bias and gender discrimination is still impactful in our society. This novel makes the readers sensitive about these issues.
Dharti ki Beti BY agnes smedley
Dharti ki Beti is a hindi translation of an autobiographical novel ‘Daughter of Earth’ by American author and journalist Agnes Smedley. It was published in 1935 A.D, but this novel is still relevant today. The novel is composition of all kinds of discrimination against women and the rage to fight it and change it. The novel gives its readers rays of hope, a progressive thought although in hardship and negative conditions in life. It is a realistic and a feminist novel.
Ullar BY NAYAN RAJ PANDEY
A novel by Nayan Raj Pandey, ‘Ullar’ set in the backdrop of Nepalgunj is a compelling read. The lively characters and the description of the places make the novel more beautiful. Revolving round the lives of working class people, the namesake ‘Ullar’ meaning imbalance rightly describes the content of the novel. The use of local language and the pragmatic dialogues add to the splendor of this novel. The novel strongly portrays the revolt against the poverty, exploitation and social bigotry in a very realistic way.

ignals cryptic. Mind blank. Vision blurred. Silence loud. I am seated on the middle of the highway. There is no vehicle until faraway and I assume I look like an actress from a movie. The cigarette butt on my hand adds the dramatic effect, although unlit. I stare blankly at the sky above me. Horns every now and then from the vehicles kilometers away contribute to the adrenaline rush inside my frame. However, I Know that the automobiles are way too far away. And therefore I stay motionless. Gutsy is not the word but I feel dramatic, like some actress, mention again. The wind sends chills down my spine. November winds are never warm at any place I know and with just an off shoulder tee and shorts I have come foe more concrete drama, I hope you can get the picture. Wondering out aloud, I tell myself for the eleventh time now; not that I had been counting, eleven just sounded good, “I got rejected. By the last chance I had. The last college placement letter.” As I look at the full bottle of whisky and the untouched packets of tablets, memories settle down.
“I give you one last chance then. You don’t understand I cannot pay for your college.” “I will get a scholarship.” “What is the guarantee?” “You have my word. If I don’t, I will do whatever you want me to.’ whatever you want me to… I have had a single parent ever since I can remember. My parents never got married. Mother worked like a horse, just for me. I had a brother but almost all of what she earned was spent on me. Everybody said I would succeed. They said I had potentials. Her expectations were pinned on me. Hope was the word. She sold our house. She sold our plots. I partied like crazy. I changed my closet every season. She wore the same Kurta for four years. I had gotten rejected. And the money was all spent. I was doomed. I opened the bottle of phenol. I puked the first drop out. My stomach churned. What would mother say? How would I face her? Disgrace to me. Disgrace to me. “I am a loser!” Rejections on top of rejections---systematic. Expectations on top of expectations---unintended? The sound of nearby wheels brought me back to reality. I stayed still. I closed my eyes. ‘In a split of a second, it will be over. Don’t worry.’ I said to myself. My heart pounded. My breathes were shorter. Tornadoes of adrenalin. Here it is. I loved aama, I hope things get better in her life. When I die, her biggest burden will be gone. I know things could be better but things cannot change. I wish I could rewind time and fit all the right pieces together. I noticed faint steps approaching me. I opened my eyes. A near five foot eight man smiled at me “Excuse me, I needed some help.” As he neared with a bunch of people, he lifted me a thumbs up sign. He thanked me, dropped me home and left. As I opened the lock to my room and entered inside, I went straight to the mirror. I made faces at myself and ended up laughing. Just when I thought I would finally die, this vehicle that was supposed to run over me happened to break down. Being the deserted highway it was, the driver went to seek for help, leaving me In Charge. Realizing death was countries away and there was no flight anytime soon, I nodded at his proposal of dropping me home. It was funny. The level of hilarity was undefined. It is ironic how some people chase death and still don’t get any near while the others want to stick to life but are taken away. Disappointment. They say God has a comical way, of pushing you when you most want to stand up and pulling you with anti-gravity strong strong when you want to fall. my case was no different. But I realized college rejection was not my ending. Should I thank God though, I do not really know, for now I no longer look like an actress from a movie scene and I spent all my allowance buying my suicide assistants. I tightened the latch and switched the lights off.

I think I lead a pretty good life.
I lived in a pretty good house, went to a pretty good school, and I am now in NYC studying in a pretty good college. Hell, I live a life way over ‘pretty good.’ And most people in Kathmandu generally do. But little do that piece of information actually make its way to our ‘thick like wood’ heads. Even though the streets of Kathmandu make the statement clearly visible, it takes a generation worth of time for people to actually drink it down, far longer time to appreciate life and far longest, if there is such a word, to help the less fortunate.
November/
14, 2010- A very casual reason led me to a village that was around ten minutes walk from my house. The village had always been there, but I had never. So for my college project, I walked down to the village to take some ‘interesting’ pictures. Yes, when I looked down from my house’s balcony, the village did not look very pretty, but once inside the village, the problem escalated. It was sad! And remorse. Long story short, I decided to take action and help the village in any way possible.
I decided to design, print and sell t-shirts, and donate all the profit to Simran Academy, a school that was cocooned in the midst of the village. Sounds simple right. Well, think again.
There are a lot of things that go into bringing out a t-shirt and being able to sell it well. Designing the sketch, finding the right store, getting the perfect t-shirt, bargaining the price, stressing during the t-shirt making process, picking up the tees, finding the perfect location to sell the tees, compromising on almost everything and finally, actually selling the t-shirts. And there is still more that keeps biting your stress levels. And it gets worse, when only you are dealing with everything. But you have no other choice, than to find your calm and move forward.
December/
Finally on 1, 2010, I set up a stall in Durbar Marg and sell almost all my t-shirts. Thanks to the wonderful people that took time to understand the cause and buy a t-shirt, I raised Rs. 22,500 and donated the money to the school on December 6. The school’s tuition starts from a plain Rs. 300, but still parents have a difficult time paying the monthly tuition. The money is not a great amount, but I am glad that it will be of some help to the struggling students. Here is a hoping that more of the Nepali youth stand up and help the country in any small way.

Busy these days working on his latest independent venture Sarir, one of the three films under the Lalteen project by the Short Film Factory, Abinash takes time out to review three of his favourite movies for Navyaata.
DANCER IN THE DARK: Denmark, 2000 This is a film by one of my favorite European director Lars Von Trier who introduced Dogma 95 filmmaking movement. The last part of his trilogy on women who makes sacrifices, Dancer in the Dark (winner of Palme D’Or at Cannes) is a story of Selma (Bjork), a European woman who comes to the United States with her 10-year old son. Suffering from a losing eyesight Selma works day and night to protect her son from the same disease. Through the tough times, it is her love for music that gives her the strength to survive. When life feels tough she escapes the mundane of everyday life by going into her imaginary musical world. This film exhibits what screenwriters have always known “make your hero suffer and your audience suffers with them”. I loved this film so much that after watching it I didn’t want to watch any other movie. Bjork won the Best Female Performance award at Cannes for this role. Her’s was an extremely difficult and emotional role to play and she pulled it off perfectly.
IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE: Hong Kong, 2000 Asian director Wong Kar Wai’s films are known to take off slow and then explode like a volcano. The same happens with ‘In the mood for Love’. The lead characters Mrs. Chan (Maggie Cheung) and Mr. Chow played by Tony Leung who won the Best Male Performance in Cannes for this film aren’t openly emotional or expressive. Their feelings are buried. This film is built on feeling of great longing and desire with unexpressed emotion. As the characters ache, we ache with them. Use of powerful background score chokes you with emotion. Christopher Doyle’s beautiful photography, soaked in rich luxurious colors fills each frame with an air of tension. Although the settings and locations are used repeatedly, the film manages to breathe new life into them each time they are featured. This film provides a master-class in how to move the camera. The use of long lenses in tight yet deep spaces left me mesmerized.
TAXI DRIVER:United States, 1976 The first time I saw Taxi Driver, I knew I admired it but I wasn’t sure if I liked it. It was a strange feeling that I hadn’t experienced before. But it was a compelling piece of cinema, later that night as I lay in my bed, I couldn’t take my mind off of the film, I couldn’t stop analyzing it. The next day I knew I had seen one of the greatest films of all time. I re-watched the film and things started to hit me hard.A film by one of my favorite American directors Martin Scorsese, this film portrays the journey of Travis Bickle, an exMarine and Vietnam War veteran living in New York City. Travis has a dull and boring life with hardly any excitement. To cure his insomnia, he starts driving taxis at night, watches porn at cinemas during the day. Travis’ life changes forever when he meets a twelve-year-old prostitute named Iris (Jodie Foster), who he tries to free from her pimp. In every frame of the film, Travis is present whether it is through his ears or eyes. The film represents his vision. Taxi Driver is a masterful psychological study, the depth of which can only fully be appreciated on repeated viewings.
