13 parts. Oblong small folios house in a custom cloth-backed box with leather pastedown label to the front cover. Complete set of 52 tinted lithographs by the Chicago Lithographing Company in 13 booklets of four lithographs each. Eight of the booklets are in the original printed lithographic wraps and five have been replaced.

Otto Jevne and Peter M. Almini, partnered with three lithographers, Louis Kurtz, Otto Knirsch and Edward Carqueville, produced this rare set, which has been called “the best source for the physical appearance of the city that the Great Fire destroyed.” Views depict the churches, bridges, harbor, river and lake, the Union Stock Yards, the Opera House, the Palmer House, Chicago University and many other important buildings and street scenes. In addition to their lithographing company, Jevne and Almini’s painted frescoes adorned the interiors of many houses and building in Chicago, including the Opera House. Their workshop on Clark Street, pictured on the front of the rare printed wrappers, was in the burnt district of the city.

These important pre-fire views of Chicago were originally intended to have been issued in 25 parts totalling 100 plates. However, only 52 plates in the 13 monthly parts were ever published. Some chipping to spines of wraps with minor separation; minor offsetting from plates; small tears to pages; additional photographs and a full condition report upon request. Howes J108. 343 (CUSTER, GEORGE ARMSTRONG) LEATHER TRUNK An original leather trunk owned by George Armstrong Custer. With brass mounts, paired side lift straps, fashioned strap at front, blind-stamped with parallel lines, on top is stamped, “warranted soleleather and steel springs.” Accompanied by supporting paperwork, including a copy of a signed affidavit from Mrs. Caribel Vivian, niece of General Custer, stating that the trunk belonged and was used by Gen. Custer, signed by dated February 12, 1950; a clipped newspaper article, dated August 17, 1961, pertaining to the purchase of the trunk by Don C. Foote, former director of the Bradford Brinton Memorial at Big Horn. As stated in the article according to his information, Foote stated that the trunk was with Custer at West Point, was with him during the Civil War, and probably came with him on his Indian campaigns in the West. EDMUND Autographed letter signed, to Woodburn Potter, his Aid de Camp, who authored a first-hand account of Gaine’s campaign against the Seminoles in Florida. 2 pp. Steam Boat Alton near Charlotte, Arkansas. March 8th, 1838. The majority concerns the care of his horses. In the last paragraph, Gaines states: “When you have done the sketch which you commenced, of my life up to the Battle of Fort Erie, send me a copy, and I will add to it an account of that Battle, and then send it to Mr. Longacre.” Potter’s most well-known book, War in Florida, was first published in 1836, two years prior to the present letter. The Battle of Erie, wherein Gaines was awarded the Thanks of Congress Gold Medal (outranking the Congressional Medal of Honor), took place in 1814 in Canada. $400-600

Reagan states, “When I see some of our beatniks protesting because life isn’t being handed to them on a big enough platter, I’m going to remember this line.” Accompanied by the original Rotary Club newsletter and postmarked envelope. 2) TLS, September 4, 1969, to Dennis Smith, son of Reagan’s cousin. “Mr. Smith” has been crossed out with pen and Reagan has written, “Dennis,” in its place.
