381* (TRUE CRIME, AL CAPONE) LEXINGTON AND NEW MICHIGAN HOTELS A collection of items obtained from the Lexington Hotel and New Michigan Hotel, including a collection of room keys and keychains from the New Michigan Hotel, a series of hand-written “work schedules” and records for the New Michigan Hotel, three keys with two key chains from the Lexington Hotel, three brass and one plastic room number plaques (with other items from the Lexington Hotel, but with source unknown), a collection of business cards/pocket calendars, pamphlets, envelopes and registration cards from the New Michigan Hotel, and wall paper purportedly from the Lexington Hotel. True Crime collector and former proprietor of Weird Harold’s, Harold Rubin, has been credited with discovering the hidden tunnels beneath Al Capone’s notorious hide out, the Lexington Hotel at Cermack and Michigan Avenue, where many of the items from his collection were obtained. Rubin also helped find the concrete vault in the basement of the hotel, which Geraldo Rivera would famously open on national television to disappointing results. At least four original masks were made from Dillinger’s face after he was shot at the Biograph Theatre in Chicago, July 22, 1934. Dillinger’s face had been recently altered by plastic surgery. Also included are their responses, including a typed letter signed by Eisenhower’s secretary and typed letters signed by Col. Parker and Gen.
