Q. What is the best way to combat anxiety through diet and lifestyle?

A. Anxiety partly comes from a lack of GABA, an amino acid that calms the part of the brain that creates emotional balance. When your gastrointestinal bacteria is not healthy, the messaging that travels up the vagus nerve, turning on the serotonin receptor sites, does not function, which, in turn, provokes anxiety. Eating a raw, organic, plantbased diet helps to clean and renew the gut health. Additionally, taking a clean GABA supplement and the ayurvedic Ashwagandha has proven to help a multitude of people.

As summer’s greens fade to autumn’s golds, many of us experience a shift in energy. The shorter days, cooler temperatures, and the lure of cozy, sedentary habits can trigger emotional and physical health challenges. At Hippocrates Wellness, we embrace fall as an opportunity for renewal. By adjusting our routines and wellness practices, we can stay vibrant and healthy throughout the season.

Autumn’s shorter days can bring on feelings of lethargy, sluggishness, and sadness. While Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is often associated with winter, it can begin in fall for those sensitive to reduced daylight. This seasonal shift can also lead to cravings for comfort foods, decreased physical activity, and social withdrawal, which can worsen health conditions like chronic pain, joint inflammation, and digestive issues. He challenges us to reconsider what makes food “celebratory,” reminding us that indulgence is often more about the memories or traditions we attach to a dish than the dish itself. Instead of reaching for foods that may leave us feeling sluggish, why not celebrate with enzyme-rich, life-giving, plant-based meals that nourish from within? As Chef Ken suggests, “If it’s a food you rarely eat because it doesn’t make you feel good, is that really a treat?”

CHEF KEN’S RECIPE OF THE MONTH

CHERRY COBBLER
Filling Ingredients:
2 cups of pitted cherries
1 ounce of water
1 pinch of cinnamon
1 teaspoon of psyllium husk powder
1⁄4 teaspoon of vanilla
4 drops of fresh lemon juice, or to taste
Topping Ingredients:
1⁄2 cup of chopped almonds
1⁄3 cup of date paste (pitted dates processed until smooth) A splash of vanilla
Directions:
1. Cut 1 cup of pitted cherries into thirds and set aside
2. Blend the remaining filling ingredients
3. Fold in the remaining cup of pitted cherries
4. Scoop the cherry filling into the dessert bowl
5. Press pieces of the topping between your fingers and scatter the pieces on top of the cherry filling
