SEACOAST SCENE | APRIL 16 - 22, 2015 | PAGE 2

Welcome to the updated Seacoast Scene and our 40th anniversary. The Scene was founded by Jack Daly 40 years ago in Hampton as a community Larry Marsolais paper dedicated to what is special about the seacoast and Hampton area. Jack did a wonderful job over the years of offering a local voice. When big money moved in to buy out the local dailies (now both are owned by a New York hedge fund), Jack kept it local, and we are going to continue that tradition. Jack sold the paper to us at the end of 2014, and we remain committed to this community. I’m a 30-year resident of

Hampton and president of the Hampton Rotary Club. Feel free to call me any time at 9355096 to discuss local issues or place an ad. The Scene is proud to support the Taste of the Coast food, beer, spirits and wine tasting at the Ashworth by the Sea. We’re sponsors this year and hope to be involved for years to come. The event is open to the public and will be held Thursday, April 23, from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. We’re very fortunate to have so many great local restaurants (many of them will be at this event for you to try their food) and a variety of local breweries and spirit makers. You’ll be able to go from table to table tasting great food and sampling pairings with wine, beer and New Hampshiremade spirits. Contact the Hampton Chamber to buy tickets.

Winter may be reluctant to depart, but that hasn’t stopped Cecilia Oh from capturing the beauty of the seacoast in several of her watercolor works of life in coastal New England. Cecilia Oh. “I am not heavily into the details of a work. I am actually trying to express the mood of what I see,” said Oh. Oh expressions are done with gentleness and thoughtful precision. “I thought about painting all of my life, but so many things delayed my even trying,” she said. “It wasn’t until four years ago that I even attempted to work in watercolors. Then, I took two classes and thought I might prefer to explore painting on my own. I think I learn better when I teach myself. So I began to experiment; I would try to paint a scene, but family and my professional responsibilities had priority. So, I decided to take photographs and work from those. That became a better choice for me, because I could then alter the reality to suit myself.” Oh’s family emigrated from Seoul, Korea, in 1980. “My parents wanted their children to experience all that America had to offer,” Oh said. “So, we made the trip and never looked back. All of my siblings are scattered throughout America, and only one brother remained in Korea. My mother developed her life as a seamstress, and I learned that trade from her. I suppose I saw art in her hands, so I decid-

ed to go in that direction through the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City.” She met her now-husband, Duk, there. “That is where I began to think about where I wanted my life to take me,” she said. Oh said she and her husband had children and decided to move to Hampton. “We had the courage to open up the Hampton Cleaners at 644 Lafayette Road. I was busy with so many things, but I never forgot that I wanted to paint. Finally, with the kids grown, I simply decided to go for it.” Oh’s daughter, April, is a music therapist in New York City, while her son, Andrew, is a government analyst in Springfield, Mass. “I now have the confidence to create. Since I began four years ago, I have managed to create some 40 paintings, and I’ve managed to sell 29 of those. In addition, I have begun painting house portraits; my customers seem to enjoy my works very much.” Oh’s paintings have a calming quality. “Preparation is the most time-consuming part of painting. An average painting may take three to four days to create, but six to seven hours to plan.” More than profiting from her efforts, Oh finds satisfaction in giving joy to others through her artistic endeavors. “I am so glad to live in New England. It is a perfect location for an artist. ... The seasons change … the colors are alive ... and life here is so rich. Trying to capture it all in my painting is a true challenge. People see my paintings hanging in my store and wonder if I painted them. When I tell them that I did, they ask if I have painted all of my life. When I tell them that I am really just a beginner, they are amazed. They tell me they have no talent for any kind of artwork. I tell them that is not so. All they need is passion and anything is possible.”

Wine lovers and foodies will have the opportunity to enjoy some of the area’s finest wines, craft brews and spirits along with a wide array of culinary delights at Toast to the Coast. Sponsored by the Exeter and Hampton Chambers of Commerce, the event will take place on Thursday, April 23, at the newly renovated Ashworth by the Sea in Hampton and is expected to attract hundreds of attendees. “It’s a great opportunity to sample some of the best food, wine, beer and spirits anywhere on the Seacoast,” Exeter Chamber of Commerce’s Lynn Dow said. Jeff Roth, owner of Tavern at River’s Edge, said he looks forward to the event every year. “It’s well attended, and I think it’s important as a local business to support the Chambers of Commerce,” he said. Tavern at River’s Edge will provide samples of a goat cheese and chicken crostini as well as Prince Edward Island Mussels. “Toast to the Coast is a way to showcase our eclectic menu,” said Roth, whose restaurant is one of 17 that will be represented. In total, 15 wineries, breweries and distilleries will be represented at the event, including Flag Hill Winery & Distillery in Lee. “We like it for the educational component. We get a chance to explain our process and how we do what we do,” Flag Hill distiller and winemaker Brian Ferguson said. Ferguson said the event also allows him to show off Flag Hill products like a barrel-aged apple brandy and a spice rum, which is made with fancy-grade molasses, which is aged for one year, then mixed with Grade B NH maple syrup. The mixture is then macerated in hand-sliced Tahitian vanilla beans, cinnamon and other spices. “We really like this event because we

get a chance to talk face to face with consumers and explain why we’re different,” said Ferguson, who described Flag Hill’s approach as “taking the hard road.” “We don’t cut corners,” he said. “Everything we do is about producing the highest-quality product.” Gareth Dickens, co-founder and coCEO of ConvenientMD Urgent Care, one of several event sponsors, said he is also grateful for the “fantastic work” both Chambers perform on behalf of the Seacoast community. “It provides more exposure to our outstanding Seacoast restaurants and specialty stores, and we can’t wait to sample all the hors d’oeuvres, craft brews and wine,” he said. To purchase tickets or learn more about 2015 Toast to the Coast, which includes a general tasting as well as a VIP “Cellar Select” Tasting, visit exeterarea.org. “General Tasting” ticket pricing will be $40 in advance; $50 at the door. VIP “Cellar Select” Tasting ticket pricing will be $60 in advance only.

The Legend of Goody Cole

W

hen one thinks witches, one thinks of Salem, Mass. Not to be outdone, Hampton also has a claim on a witch, and her name is Eunice “Goody” Cole. Now, Goody may not have been able to ride a broomstick or raise a wart, but she was deemed to be the town witch ... and that was that. In 1637, Goody had a bit of property that some locals coveted. To obtain that land, the town had to be rid of the poor woman. Being a loner with no friends, Goody became an easy enough target for those who claimed she did evil. Goody didn’t help her cause by scaring the passengers in a boat to fall into the drink and drown. After a stint in jail, Goody died.

Weirdness continued after her death. A stake was driven into her heart. She was cremated; the ashes were lost, but the urn remained. In 1938, she was posthumously cleared of all charges. From 1939 to 1963, a mysterious woman roamed the streets of Hampton. Goody’s ghost? Could be. — Mike Bisceglia

NEWS OF THE WEIRD BY CHUCK SHEPHERD

REFRESH YOUR SPIRIT.

The importance of family

On Feb. 9 a single traffic stop in Alderson, West Virginia, resulted in the arrest of six people from the same family, trafficking in stolen power tools (including one man who traded a leaf blower, hedge trimmer and weed trimmer for Percocet pills). However, a month later, members of an even more charming family were caught in raids in Elyria, Ohio. Officers from three jurisdictions arrested 34 people all related to each other in connection with a $400,000 drug operation.
