A word from Larry

Troop 177 to host 14th annual yard sale Troop 177, sponsored by the First Congregation Church, will host its 14th annual yard sale at the St. James Masonic Lodge at 77 Tide Mill Road in Hampton on Larry Marsolais May 29-31. The 25-member troop utilizes the funds earned by the event to pay for all of its activities for the year. These include: the monthly camping events and the upcoming National Camporee to be held at West Point, New York. The troop gratefully accepts donated items (except for TVs) for the sale. Those wishing to

give of their time to help set up, take down, restock or prepare and serve refreshments are encouraged to volunteer. Last year, 20 employees of Lindt Chocolates in Stratham, as well as former scouts of Troop 177, helped to make the event an overwhelming success. Troop leaders hope to attract those groups and many others to assist with the myriad of responsibilities for this event. Items most commonly donated to the event include: furniture, books, household goods, kids’ stuff, sports equipment, gardening materials and much, much more. Those wishing to donate time/materials for this very worthwhile cause may contact: Larry Marsolais at 603-9265570, Mike Dumont at 603-929-6638 or Bud DesRochers 603-926-5717. As always, your support is greatly appreciated. — Larry Marsolais

Ideas for dog-friendly outings

By Vinny Manfrate

vinny@seacoastscene.net

You’re not the only one who has been stuck inside all winter — your furry friend is ready to get out into the warm weather too. Here’s are some great places to visit with your canine companion.

Salisbury & Hampton

Although Hampton, N.H., and Salisbury, Mass., state parks beaches generally prohibit dogs from the sand, there are still plenty of places to bring Fido out for some ocean air. Although Hampton, N.H., and Salisbury, Mass., state parks beaches typically prohibit dogs from the sand, there are still plenty of places to bring Fido out for some ocean air. The Hampton State Beach does make an exception to this from Oct. 1 until May 1, according to The Hampton Beach Village District. During this time you are allowed to walk your dog on the beach provided they are leashed and cleaned up after. Hampton Town Beaches will allow dogs on the beach from Labor Day until Memorial Day anytime, according to the

Hampton Police Department’s Dog Ordinance. After Memorial Day, dogs will be allowed on the town beaches after 6 p.m. and before 8 a.m. These town beaches are called Plaice Cove and Sun Valley beaches according to René Boudreau of the Hampton Parks and Recreation. The boardwalk along Hampton Beach is typically dog friendly as well and can be a fun walk as long as your dog is comfortable being around crowds and as always, remember to clean up after your dog. Salisbury’s Ghost Trail, part of the Coastal Trail Network, is a hard-packed stone dust trail that is suitable for walking, jogging or even biking with your dog. The trail extends 1.8 miles with views of a beautiful woodlands and native wildflowers. The Ghost Trail connects with The Eastern Marsh Trail. This trail is paved and extends 1.4 miles and is also a great a place to walk, jog, and bike with your dog. You and your K-9 companion will enjoy the brisk walk along the beautiful marshes and world-class bird watching. All trails of the Coastal Trail Network are dog-friendly walks that connect Salisbury with bordering towns Amesbury and Newburyport. Bag dispensers for your pup are provided

at each of the trail heads. It is asked that Seabrook, N.H. you make use of these bags and be sure You still have some time to walk with not to leave the bags at the side of the trail. your dog along the beaches of Seabrook. Visit coastaltrails.org for directions to the According to Seabrook Town orditrail heads. nance, dogs will be permitted on Town of Seabrook beaches provided they are con-

trolled and on a leash. From Memorial Day until Labor Day, dogs are allowed after 6 p.m. and before 8 a.m. Perfect times for an morning jog or and evening stroll. Seabrook’s Petsmart (700 Lafayette Rd. Unit No. 211, 603-814-3027, petsmartcharities.org) will be holding its National Adoption Weekend starting Friday, May 15, until Sunday, May 17, from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. all three days. At this event you can meet and learn about pets available for adoption. This event will also be happening at the Epping, N.H., Petsmart (11 Brickyard Square, 603-734-9022) as well.

Rye, N.H.

Want to get a morning walk in with your pup before you head to work? Right now you can walk along the Rye town beaches at any time, but according to the Rye, N.H. Police Department website, beginning on the Saturday before Memorial Day through the Saturday after Labor, dogs will not be permitted on town beaches between the hours of 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. While time is limited, you can still take advantage of the beach for that early morning/evening walk or jog. There is also a spot between Wallis Sands State Park and Odiorne Point State Park where dogs and people are allowed to roam freely, except between

the hours of midnight and 6 a.m because the beach is closed at this time (there is a $50 fine for failure to follow these guidelines). Another fun place to take your dog any time of day is the Rye Town Forest. Dog walkers are welcome on this scenic

trail through the luscious wooded areas of Rye. Make sure that your dog is comfortable around other animals though, as horseback riders are also welcome on this trail. There is a carry in/carry out policy, so pick up after your dog. The trail is

marked and should be an easy walk for you and your companion. For something totally different, why not bring your dog on a whale watch? If your pup is well-behaved and used to being on a boat, Granite State 6

Helping Seacoast residents pay less

Free service takes the sting out of tax season By Mike Bisceglia

news@seacoastscene.net

“We truly believe that people shouldn’t have to pay ... the government.” This sentiment was strongly stated by both Mary Ellen Vaughan, AARP tax preparer, and Ann Kaiser, local site coordinator. “Most people feel intimidated by the IRS, and they really shouldn’t,” said Vaughan. “The folks there are human and understand that many of us would rather not pay taxes, let alone deal with a seemingly all-powerful agency. Added to that is paying someone to prepare taxes for us. That often hurts us twice. That’s why we feel the free AARP tax preparation service is such a workable entity.” From Feb. 1 through April 15, the tax preparation busy season, nearly 19,000 New Hampshire residents were helped by AARP tax preparers. Of that figure, some 500 coastal residents availed themselves to the opportunity to having their taxes prepared at absolutely no charge. These dedicated tax preparers work on a strictly volunteer basis. “We keep long hours,” said Kaiser, “but it is worth it to us to know that we help people to keep at least some of the money they have worked so hard to earn in their own pockets.” Vaughan retired from Sony in Manhattan, where she worked for 15 years as vice president in charge of payroll. Leaving the world of full-time work, Vaughan moved to coastal New Hampshire. In addition to her work as a tax preparer,

Vaughan leads a “Strong Bones” exercise class for the elderly through the Hampton Rec and drives for Transportation Assistance for Senior Coastal residents. “I used to have plenty of money but was never busy enough,” she chuckled. “Now, I’m busy enough but have no money!” Kaiser has been affiliated with AARP tax preparation for 18 years, 10 as a site coordinator. “I enjoy the work I do,” said Kaiser. “It is exercise for my brain. Moreover, it feels good to give of one’s time to those who appreciate the service. Some people believe that you have to be elderly to take advantage of this service. That is definitely not true. Anyone, including high school and college students, can utilize this service.” Kaiser, who holds a pilot’s license, has been an AARP tax preparer trainer for 12 years. She is a native of New Hampshire, although she has lived in Hampton since 1965. “We have 10 volunteer preparers here, and all of them are top notch,” said Kaiser. “They are up on all of the latest codes, laws and forms. They receive annual training, and it shows. Our satisfaction rate, by all who take advantage of the service, is pretty much 100 percent. Sometimes we’re offered money by clients. We’re not allowed to take it, so we tell them to make a donation to the Lane Library, our preparation location. We’re always delighted to learn that is exactly what they did!”

Bike of the Week

Tom rides a 2014 FLHTK Limited Harley Davidson What town do you live in? Seabrook, N.H. Why did you pick this bike? For the upgrades from my old trade in. Is it customized in any way? Mostly stock, but I added new lights, a new windshield, LED directionals and fog lamps.

What is your dream bike or dream modification to this bike? Currently this is my dream bike, but for modifications I’d like more lights on the back and a custom exhaust system. Favorite place to ride in the summer? My favorite place to ride is on any open road. Where does the bike spend the winters? In my garage.

Seacoast kicks of farmers market season By Rob Levey

We have legendary classics, like the lobster roll unchanged since 1948, and new modern classics, like our Crispy Fish Tacos, there is something for everyone.

Spring is in the air, which means many people have begun to venture out in search of local produce, crafts and goods at farmers markets across the Seacoast. Noting that many early markets feature local greens and plants, farmer Brett McKenzie said things for him really take off in early June. “That’s when we start with our tomatoes — it’s the first taste of summer,” he said. “We’ll also have cucumbers, pickling cucumbers and cherry tomatoes. We might bring down lettuce, too.” For McKenzie, there is nothing quite like the farmers markets organized through the Seacoast Growers Association. Current SGA farmers’ markets may be found in Portsmouth, Dover, Exeter, Durham and Newington. (See seacoastgrowers.org.) “We can only bring what we grow to these markets,” he said. “Everyone goes through an inspection where farms are visited to ensure that’s what’s happening.” Farmer Jeremiah Vernon said the market in Portsmouth, which takes place on Saturdays, might be the biggest. “This year, they didn’t accept any new vendors,” he said. “It’s almost impossible to get into these larger markets.”

As for his farm’s particular specialty, Vernon cited their Shiitake and Oyster mushrooms, which he grows inside a climate controlled chamber. Acknowledging it is more expensive to start up a farm that requires a fruiting room to grow such food items, he said the initial upfront expense is worth it in the long term. “It enables me to be a year-round pro15

What is your favorite drink to make and why? The Italian Surfer because it is a great summer drink. What is the most popular drink on the menu? How is it made? The Espresso Martini made with vanilla vodka, kahlua, Bailey’s Irish Cream and a shot of real espresso. 14 vider,” said Vernon, who also raises organically grained and pastured chickens. As for his favorite part about traveling to area farmers markets, McKenzie cited the opportunity to meet his customers face to face, some of whom buy his products in different locations. “I have one customer who just loves our cherry tomatoes,” he said. “She comes to the farmer’s market in Exeter and then Portsmouth. She also comes to our festival at the farm during Columbus Day Weekend. We’ve built some great relationships through these farmers markets.” Vernon said there are subtle reasons as to why he suggests people visit farmers markets aside from the fact the food they offer consumers is local.

“You will know your food and know your farmer,” he said. “You know he planted that seed, washed the product by hand. He can tell you where that product has been from seed to your hand. … The majority of people would not be thrilled if they knew how their food was farmed and grown.” Acknowledging the cost of products at a farmers market are more expensive, Vernon said what people are in fact buying extend well beyond what they can pick up with their hands. “The joy you get from the experience at a farmers market can’t be matched,” he said. “You’re buying an experience.”

A 50/50 relationship

A young man saw an elderly couple sitting down to lunch at McDonald’s. He noticed that they had ordered one meal and an extra drink cup. As he watched, the gentleman carefully divided the hamburger in half, then counted out the fries, one for him, one for her, until each had half. Then he poured half of the soft drink into the extra cup and set that in front of his wife. The old man then began to eat, and his wife sat watching with her hands folded in her lap. The young man decided to ask if they would allow him to purchase another meal for them so that they didn’t have to split theirs. The old gentleman said, “Oh, no. We’ve been married 50 years, and everything has always been, and always will be, shared

Stay healthy and enjoy life

My brother is never happy. At 90 years old, he complains wherever he goes that they’re all kids, and when he goes where there are older people they’re too old. He has outlived most of his friends, but he is grateful to be alive and looks forward to more years of living. He just survived a heart bypass surgery at his age. That was four months ago. Now, he is back playing golf three times a week and living a near normal life. Why? Because he was in excellent shape; his rountinely active activities of golf (walking the 18 holes) and dancing every weekend kept him healthy. I am quite comfortable at 84, because I am now in good physical and mental health after years of suffering with health issues. After I had a frightening bout with a COPDrelated disease, a good friend spent many hours explaining the merits of a good wellness program to maintain good health and have some fun with life in my later years. I have listened to his advice and now include exercise as part of my daily activities. I have stopped eating the bad foods and put a limit on the Bud Light.

I strongly feel that now it’s my turn to encourage seniors to take time out of their lives and treat their body as it should be treated. Older people need to recognize good health is necessary to be happy and active. There are still many places to go, people to see and things to do for them and for me. I want a strong and healthy body to be able to walk, play golf, dance, think and do what I want without physical restrictions and being sick all of the time. These so-called “golden years” don’t have to be bad, and could be the best years of our life if we stay healthy. So my advice to people getting older like myself is to stay well physically and emotionally in order to enjoy whatever lifestyle and fun that is left. Get off the couch, stop with the smoking, skip that booze party, find a good diet and smile. Good health is also a good attitude, so forget all of those negative thoughts about people and things that don’t matter. Go to the gym, take a long walk, smile at everybody, have more sex and go out and have some good clean fun. My goal is to be as healthy and vital at 84 as I was at 25. Why would I worry about getting older ― what’s to moan about?? I’m just getting older and better. Jack Daly is the recent owner of the Seacoast Scene. Say “Hi” to him around town.

Anyone who has ever dressed a child will love this one! Did you hear about the Texas teacher who was helping one of her kindergarten students put on his cowboy boots? He asked for help and she could see why... Even with her pulling and him pushing, the little boots still didn’t want to go on. By the time they got the second boot on, she had worked up a sweat. She almost cried when the little boy said, “Teacher, they’re on the wrong feet.” She looked, and sure enough, they were. It wasn’t any easier pulling the boots off than it was putting them on. She managed to keep her cool as together they worked to get the boots back on, this time on the right feet. He then announced, “These aren’t my boots.”

EMV & Apple Pay Ready Terminal

She bit her tongue rather than get right in his face and scream, “Why didn’t you say so?” like she wanted to. Once again, she struggled to help him pull the ill-fitting boots off his little feet. No sooner had they gotten the boots off when he said, “They’re my brother’s boots. My mom made me wear ‘em.” Now she didn’t know if she should laugh or cry. But, she mustered up what grace and courage she had left to wrestle the boots on his feet again. Helping him into his coat, she asked, “Now, where are your mittens?” He said, “I stuffed ‘em in the toes of my boots.” She will be eligible for parole in three years.

Send her the word ‘comfortable’ Two sisters, one blonde and one brunette, inherit the family ranch. Unfortunately, after just a few years, they are in financial trouble. In order to keep the bank from repossessing the ranch, they need to purchase a bull so that they can breed their own stock. Upon leaving, the brunette tells her sister, “When I get there, if I decide to buy the bull, I’ll contact you to drive out after me and haul it home.” The brunette arrives at the man’s ranch, inspects the bull, and decides she wants to buy it. The man tells her that he will sell it for $599, no less. After paying him, she drives to the nearest town to send her sister a telegram to tell her the news. She walks into the telegraph office, and says, “I want to send a telegram to my sister telling her that I’ve bought a bull for our ranch. I need

her to hitch the trailer to our pickup truck and drive out here so we can haul it home.” The telegraph operator explains that he’ll be glad to help her, then adds, it will cost 99 cents a word. Well, after paying for the bull, the brunette realizes that she’ll only be able to send her sister one word. After a few minutes of thinking, she nods and says, “I want you to send her the word ‘comfortable.’” The operator shakes his head. “How is she ever going to know that you want her to hitch the trailer to your pickup truck and drive out here to haul that bull back to your ranch if you send her just the word comfortable?” The brunette explains, “My sister’s blonde. The word is big. She’ll read it very slowly.... ‘com-for-da-bul.’”

he schooner Glendon took its maiden voyage from Kennebunk, Maine, in 1880. In February, 1896, she was laden with 460 tons of coal and bound for northern New England. She never arrived. A powerful nor’easter doomed the ship off the coast of Hampton. Word was sent to a lifesaving station at Straw’s point. The rescuers arrived and immediately began firing a gun with an emergency line to the crew clinging to the rigging of the stricken ship. Against all odds, the lifesaving crew tried again and again. Around seven o’clock, the line found the rigging. One by one, the crewmembers found their way to safety. Within weeks, approximately 200 tons of coal was salvaged from the Glendon. In 1938, veteran fisherman Albert Dunbrack found the Glendon’s anchor and chain tangled in his lobster traps. It was because of the heroism dis-

played by that lifesaving crew that a Coast Guard station became a reality at North Beach in Hampton. — Mike Bisceglia

NEWS OF THE WEIRD BY CHUCK SHEPHERD

World’s Worst Sculptor

It seemed like a good idea when the town of Celoron, N.Y., agreed in 2009 to pay for a bronze statue honoring the village’s only celebrity. Lucille Ball had spent her childhood years there, and even today, everyone “Loves Lucy.” The result was apparently a monstrosity, described in news reports as “frightening” and unrecognizable by anyone who has ever watched Lucy’s TV shows or movies. The original sculptor first suggested a fee of $8,000 to $10,000 to make a better one, but after Mayor Scott Schrecengost started a fundraising campaign, the sculptor offered to make another one for free.

In additional fallout from the budget cuts and personnel reductions at the IRS, the supervisory revenue official for the Dallas region disclosed in April that his office had so few collectors that it would pursue only scofflaws who owe the government at least $1 million. “I have to say,” the supervisor told a reporter, “nobody’s ever going to knock on (the) door” of anyone who owes from $100,000 to $999,999.

by “jazz hands” open hands, palm directed to the stage, and the fingers extended wildly. Using “jazz hands” would show compassion for attendees who have anxiety and other disorders, and for speakers who might be distracted by the din of approval.

People Different From Us

Venezuelan women’s well-known obsession with bodily beauty usually focuses on face, breasts and buttocks, and model Aleira Avendano has certainly had those surgeries. However, Avendano’s signature feature is her 20-inch waist, which she says has been maintained by wearing an absurdly tight corset for 23 hours a day for the past six years. “I wash myself and rest for an hour, and then I put it on again. At first, it was terrible, then I got used to it, and (it) became a necessity.”

Compelling Explanations

California Law: A jury in Atascadero, California, having already convicted Mark Andrews, 51, of murder, concluded in March that he was legally sane at the time he shot his neighbor to death even though he claimed she was a vampire and that he himself had been, for 20 years, a werewolf. (A month later, a judge in San Francisco acquitted Santino Aviles, 41, of robbery and other felony charges after he claimed that the apartment he broke into was a spaceship that would take him to safety before the imminent explosion of the Earth. His lawyer called his condition a “meth-fueled psychosis,” and he was convicted only of misdemeanors.)

At Australia’s sixth annual National Disability Summit in Melbourne in March, all of the speakers except one were able-bodied. That person, in a wheelchair, had to be lifted up to the stage because there was no ramp. Furthermore, disabled activists in attendance told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. that the “disabled” section’s table was at the back of the room, the food tables were elevated to accommodate standers, Readers’ Choice and one accessible toilet was being used (1) No charges were filed in the April as storage space. incident in Lee County, Georgia, even though a 74-year-old woman was shot by her son-in-law.
