Solving childhood hunger I hope everyone had a chance to view our first edition. If for any reason you every need a back issue, email me and I will get you a copy: larry@ seacoastscene.net. This week I Larry Marsolais would like to talk about Little Harbour Charitable Foundation. LHCF was established in 2000 as an all-volunteer 501(c)3 organization by Paul and Anna Grace Holloway. Their mission, when they created the foundation, was and continues to be, to provide grants to support programs and projects that benefit children and youth in New Hampshire’s Seacoast area, with emphasis on education, health and the environment. Since its inception, LHCF has distributed over $1.6 million in support for Seacoast

area programs and has assisted thousands of children with basic health, welfare, educational services and crisis care. In addition, the foundation has supported marine environmental initiatives and personal enrichment opportunities. Last week, members of the foundation heard about a fire at the First United Methodist Church of Portsmouth N.H. which resulted in a huge loss of $4,000 for the local 68 Hours of Hunger program. Their response was immediate. “Childhood hunger is simply not acceptable today. In New Hampshire 18.7 percent of our children (1 in 5) are deemed food insecure,” stated Paul Holloway, president of Little Harbour Charitable Foundation. A donation of $5,000 from Little Harbour Charitable Foundation off set the loss and ensured no local children went hungry. Feel free to call me any time at 603935-5096 to discuss local issues or to place an ad. — A word from Larry

His parents immigrated from southern Italy. He had four brothers and two sisters, and everyone worked. Those were the days of the Great Depression. “Dad worked in a piano factory during the day and an upholstery factory at night. I sold papers, shined shoes. ... I did just about anything to make a buck,” said 89-year-old Dominic Rosa. “Education was very important in my family, and I must have done something right, because I managed to earn a one-year scholarship to Harvard.” Before Rosa could put one foot inside those hallowed halls, World War II broke out. “My buddies and I were gung-ho about joining the Army. Then, just before I signed the papers, I made a snap decision to join the Navy Air Force. I wanted to be a pilot. Immediately, I was sent to Holy Cross College. After a couple of semesters, I was sent to Williams College. From there, I was sent to the University of North Carolina. In each school, I was learning about things I needed to become a pilot. Then, the Navy decided it needed navigators, so I was sent to Navigation School in Maine. The war ended in Europe, so I was to be sent to the Pacific. My next destination was Hawaii for further training. The war ended, and I hadn’t seen one day of action!” Rosa returned to the Boston area, where he met his beautiful future wife, Geraldine. “We immediately had a baby, the first of nine. America went to war with Korea, and I was called back into the service. My job was to help repair the damage done to three aircraft carriers during WWII. I was a lieutenant jg, and the chiefs in my squadron wouldn’t let me touch a tool. They wanted to do the

work themselves. I really had nothing to do, so I took up boxing. I guess I was pretty good, because I became squadron champ. I suppose I did see some action during the war years after all.” Returning to Boston, Rosa took advantage of the G.I. Bill. He went on to graduate from Harvard with a degree in political science. But Rosa needed to provide for his family, so he went to work for Radio Shack as a traveling salesman. “I was observant. I saw the mistakes that the various electronics companies were making, and I knew how to avoid them. I borrowed $3,000 from my father and opened my own business. I named it Pacer Electronics, because I liked to watch the horses.” Rosa put in the time and effort, and he built the business. “We became very successful. I say ‘we’ because it was a family business. I relied on my kids to make it work.” Ultimately, Pacer went on to have offices in Connecticut, Florida, New York and several overseas locations. “I was always looking for a deal, so I also went into the bar business. I bought three bars, a restaurant, and even a Chinese restaurant in Massachusetts. I think my wife convinced me that I should buy a horse. The first one wasn’t much of a runner, but he did get me started. I ended up owning 15 horses and named many after my kids and grandkids. I even became part owner of Suffolk Downs.” Time passed. Dominic and Gerry decided it was time to slow down and enjoy life. “We began to sell the businesses. We had done well by them, but it was time to enjoy the family and watch the ocean from our back door. Life has been very, very good to us.” The Rosas have nine children, 33 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Marc Goulet rides a 2009 Ural What town do you live in? Portsmouth, N.H. Why did you pick this bike? I picked it because it has 2-wheel drive and my wife and I can ride it through the winter. ... Our cat Indie even likes to ride. Is it customized in any way? It is a military motorcycle and I’ve added a few things, like the hand-grenade shift, pirate flag and my favorite bell and squeaky horn. What is your dream bike or dream modification to this bike? This is a dream bike because it has a custom-made tractor seat, which is very comfortable, and a side car.

Love it here. The home of familiar favorites

Favorite place to ride in the summer? My favorite place to ride is along the coastal route from Portsmouth to Hampton. Where does the bike spend the winters? It spends the winter in the heated garage when it’s not romping through the snow.

What is the most popular drink on the menu? How is it made? The Berry Sangria, which is made with fresh pureed berries, vodka, fruit juice, wine and soda water. 14 to cool, he said they then bring the salt

water taffy to a pulling machine with hooks that fluffs it out. “You need air in there or else it would pull your fillings out when you ate it,” said Nelson, who said the machinery he uses — like the process itself — has not changed in more than 100 years. “The machine that cuts and packages the saltwater kisses dates back to 1903 and has the original motor,” he said. “The puller dates to 1903. They work great.” According to Nelson, citrus flavors tend to be the most popular. “We have orange, lemon and lime,” he added. “We use oils for flavor and all natural

colors. People like that nowadays.” His most unique flavor, however, may be his personal favorite. “We have a peanut butter saltwater kiss with a molasses base with peanut butter in the center — it’s sort of like a cinnamon bun,” he said. “It’s amazing and there’s nothing like it anywhere. It’s just peanut butter and salt.” In looking ahead toward the summer, Nelson said he cannot help but remember his past. “I can’t imagine doing anything different,” he said. “I wouldn’t even know how to make candy if I didn’t do it the traditional way. … I still love what I’m doing.”

GETTING OLD-ER

Do you think I’ll live to be 90? playing golf, sailing, hiking, or bicycling? “No I don’t,” I said. He asked, “Do you gamble, drive fast cars, or have a lot of sex?” “No,” I said. “I don’t do any of those things.” He looked at me and said, “Then why do you care?” You can't help getting older, but you don't have to get old. We are going to get old, and it is going to happen lightning fast. You won't see it coming. You'll just be living your life the way you always have, thinking, “Man, I sure am young! There is little in life that I enjoy more than the simple knowledge of how completely not old I am." And then one day, out of the blue, you'll have a horrifying realization that people have stopped viewing you as an ultra cool, iconic masterpiece of sexuality ... now you're just another “old guy.” According to a recent Gallop Poll, the

By Jack Daly I recently picked a new primary care doctor. After two visits and exhaustive lab tests, he said I was doing “fairly well” for my age. A little concerned about that comment, I couldn’t resist asking him, “Do you think I’ll live to be 90?” He asked, “Do you smoke tobacco, or drink beer or wine?” “Oh no,” I replied. “I’m not doing drugs, either.” “Then he asked, “Do you eat rib-eye steaks and barbecued ribs?”I said, “No, my former doctor said that all red meat is very unhealthy!” “Do you spend a lot of time in the sun, like

84, this old body hurts when I walk and exercise, but the idea makes me feel good and, after, I am delighted that I did it. I also play computer games on the Internet. I'm stuck to the computer screen for hours on end playing duplicate bridge and that keeps me happy for a long time. My lady friend also plays her style of games on an adjoining computer and we are both enjoying ourselves. I'm not someone who thrives on a lot of unscripted time. I like the feeling that there is still time for me to grow and time for a possible new business venture and new things to do. Writing a column for my old paper the Seacoast Scene is one of them. My thinking mind is good. My health is good and I still have the urgency to get things done.

average age for retirement in 1991 was 57. In 2014, it was 62. Aging baby boomers are working longer than any previous generation, either out of preference or because of the financial difficulties of early retirement. My concern is for those people who retire with nothing to do and no place to go, and for those older people who simply do not feel good. Early retirement, it turns out, can be bad for your physical and emotional health. I conclude that work, or interesting things to do, will keep us young and fit. Only then, will retirement be OK. Remember, there are requirements to getting older. You must be physically able to do things: walk, climb stairs, sports, sex, etc. Feeling good about yourself is all up to you! I get bored easily when there is nothing interesting to do, so I go to a health facility every day to work out for an hour or so. At

Tribute to a fallen son

I

t began as a grave marker. In May of 1945, William E. Downs of Manchester simply wanted the federal government to furnish him with a grave marker for his son, who had been lost at sea during World War II. No such markers existed, but Downs wasn’t to be denied. In 1950, he received support from Gov. Sherman Adams, who created the New Hampshire Memorial Commission. Several regional locations to place such a monument were considered. Finally, the memorial statue and honor roll were installed at Hampton Beach, across from the Ashworth Hotel. The design for the statue was created by Concord’s Alice Cosgrove. The statue was freed from a 24-ton block of granite. It was done in Barre, Vt., by Italian sculptor Vincenzo Andreani. It was commemorated on May 30, 1957. From its base, the statue rises 12 feet. There is a granite seat behind it, and the names of 248 fallen servicemen and

women are inscribed behind the bench. At the base of the statue are the words, “Breathe soft, ye winds, Ye waves in silence rest.” Cosgrove said she wanted the statue to reflect gentleness, like a mother covering her sleeping child for the night. — Mike Bisceglia

• Why did the blonde bring a ladder to the bar? Because she heard that drinks were on the house.

• Did you hear about the guy whose hair transplant went badly? Now there's hell toupee!

• Today will be a big day for you, especially because you're going shopping for pants.

• How about the blonde who went into sleep research because she thought it would be her dream job?

• How about that audio engineer who was called racist because he was into white noise?

• Did you hear about the blonde who applied for work at the playground equipment factory? She hoped to work a swing shift.

• How about the guy who became invisible on the flight to Helsinki? He disappeared into Finnair. • How clumsy is Joe? When someone cuts him off, he can't give them the finger because he's all thumbs. • Why did the blonde inventor stop trying to come up with new ideas? Because she heard there was a ban on incandescent light bulbs.

Every day, he starts at the crack of dawn. • Why must an incompetent donut maker also be terrible at golf? Because he can never make a hole in one! • How does a harpist get to Carnegie Hall? 1999 legislation that, had it been on the books the year before, might have saved the life of new mother Rose Church, whose doctor was OB/GYN Larry Stutts. Rose’s Law gave new mothers a legal right to remain hospitalized for up to 96 hours after birth, depending on circumstances, but the new senator calls that right just another “Obamacare-style law” in which legislators in Montgomery intrude into doctors’ decisions. (Stutts also proposed to repeal the requirement for written cautions to patients whose mammograms show unusual density.) Though her daughter survived, Rose died of a heart attack following two “doctor’s decision” hospital releases, and her husband’s wrongful-death lawsuit against Stutts and others reached a settlement in 2005.

Great art

World’s greatest lawyers

• The National Gallery of Australia hosted a special series of tours of “James Turrell: A Retrospective” in early April in which all guests were nude. The tours were staged by Australian artist Stuart Ringholt, who introduced the concept earlier at the Museum of Contemporary Art (and was nude, himself, for the Turrell show, though other gallery staff remained clothed). The post-tour cocktail reception was also in the nude. • The Australian “abstract expressionist” Aelita Andre began painting “professionally” at age 9 months, said her parents, and by 22 months had her own exhibit at Melbourne’s Brunswick Street gallery, and by age 4, the paintbrush-armed toddler had enjoyed a $24,000 sale. She has now also distinguished herself as an “artist” of another type while explaining her approach. In April, the now8-year-old told News.com.au, “I interpret my style of painting as a magic, abstract universe. It doesn’t sit in one tiny sphere in all realism; it goes out and it explores the world.” She acknowledged seeing things (e.g., “rabbits”) that an 8-year-old might, but pointed out that she also sees “the cosmos.” “I just feel free. I don’t feel locked up in a tiny world.” In January, the principal of W.F. Burns Middle School in Valley, Alabama, sent home a letter to parents with her suggestions on how to train students in the event an active shooter breaks into the classroom. In order not to be “sitting ducks” for the intruder, each child was asked to be armed with an 8-ounce canned food item to toss at any potential spree-killer. The can is designed to give the student a “sense of empowerment” in the face of extreme danger, the principal told WHNTTV of Huntsville, but acknowledged that “(T) his is a sensitive topic.”

See Yourself Succeed

In March, offensive lineman John Urschel of the Baltimore Ravens added to his curriculum vitae by co-authoring the latest of his several peer-reviewed academic articles, “A Cascadic Multigrid Algorithm for Computing the Fiedler Vector of Graph Laplacians,” in the Journal of Computational Mathematics. If Urschel can understand, and even advance, tangled, obtuse formulas (which use familiar numbers, e.g., 1, 2, 3, and Greek letters such as phi, lambda, and sigma lots of sigmas), why is he a football player, he asked himself on the Players Tribune website. “There’s a rush you get when you go out on the field . . . and physically dominate the player across from you.” He added, “I love hitting people.”

• A man in Mios, France, fired from his job several years ago, and who had been receiving unemployment benefits, suddenly found himself being dunned by the national labor agency when a tribunal finally ruled in the employer’s favor and ordered the man’s benefits paid back. The agency ordered the man’s current employer to garnishee his paycheck of the equivalent of $160-$210 per week until, according to a March report on Paris’s The Local, he hired a certain (unnamed) lawyer. The labor agency’s new order requires the current employer, instead, to garnishee the pay by 1 centime (about a penny) a month for the next 26,126 years.

• Kimberly Kitchen, 45, was a successful estate lawyer in Huntington, Pennsylvania, with more than 30 clients for the BMZ Law firm (so successful in her 10-year career that she had just been promoted to partner and had served as president of the local bar association) with but one complication that in December she was finally revealed not to be a lawyer at all. Her diploma, bar exam results and other documents were forgeries, according to the Pennsylvania attorney general’s office, which filed charges in March.

Can’t possibly be true

Dan Kennedy of Salt Lake City was driving to work on March 31 when a large bag fell off of the truck in front of him, and, for traffic safety, he stopped to move it from the road and discovered it contained about 75 pounds’ worth of U.S. currency (about $22,000) in a plastic bag marked with the name of the Brinks armored truck company. The bag remained sealed, and Kennedy dutifully contacted state troopers and handed it over. He sounded perplexed when Brinks immediately sent him a $5,000 gift check. “Why would I get anything for that?” “Almost anyone,” he said, would have done Perspective Newly elected Alabama state Sen.
