Who is Our Comforter?

Was there a Comforter in the Old Testament?


The question that comes to my mind when talking about the comforter is “Is there a comforter in the Old Testament like in the New Testament?” I would have to assume that there is, because God said I am the same yesterday, today and forever Hebrews 13:8. We need to follow this line of thinking; if God is the same through all time then there must be a comforter in the Old Testament like in the new. Let’s look for the word comforter and comfort to see if there is anything that be compared to a comforter in the New Testament. Old Testament Comforter Isa 66:13 KJV As one whom his mother comforteth, so will I comfort you; and ye shall be comforted in Jerusalem. Isa 43:11 KJV I, even I, am the LORD(Adonai, Jehovah,) ; and beside me there is no saviour. H3068 ‫ הָוֹהְי‬yehôvâh (yeh-ho-vaw' ) From H1961; (the) self-Existent or eternal; Jehovah, Jewish national name of God: - Jehovah, the Lord. Compare H3050, H3069. Total KJV occurrences: 6521 Who is our Saviour? It is Jehovah our Father. Jesus has his Father’s authority or name in him, so where ever the Son is the Father is there through his Son. I will give you a witness so you know I am speaking the truth. Exodus 23:21 (KJV+) Beware of him, and obey his voice, provoke him not; for he will not pardon your transgressions: for my name H8034 is in him.

H8034 ‫םֵׁש‬, shêm , shame; honor, authority, character. Exodus 23:21 (GW) Pay attention to him, and listen to him. Don't defy him, because he will not forgive your disobedience. He is acting on my authority. This verse is talking about the angle which means messenger, this messenger is Jesus his Son was with the people of Israel. He was the pillar of Fire and cloud, Michael was there with the people to lead them. But you can see that Jehovah his father was saying he is there comforter, how can he say that? Because Jesus is there in his father’s name or authority just like when he came to earth and was born into the human race he said that he was there in his father’s name. Let me give you some witness’ so you know I


am telling you the truth. Joh_5:43 I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: Joh_10:25 Jesus answered them, I told you, and ye believed not: the works that I do in my Father's name, they bear witness of me. John 3:16, John 6:38, John 8:28-29, John 12:28, John 17:4-6; Ezekiel 23:21; Hebrews 5:4-5 Now that you know that Jesus was here in his father’s name and authority, let’s move on so we can see who the comforter is in the old testament. Isa 51:3 YLT For Jehovah hath comforted Zion, He hath comforted all her wastes, And He setteth her wilderness as Eden, And her desert as a garden of Jehovah, Joy, yea, gladness is found in her, Confession, and the voice of song. Isa 51:12 YLT I—I am He—your comforter, Who art thou—and thou art afraid of man? he dieth ! And of the son of man—grass he is made! We can see that there was a comforter in the Old Testament, and who was the comforter of Isra el? It was Jehovah and Jesus. Jehovah the father is the source, Jesus his son was the arm that carried out the will of his father. Now we will move on to the New Testament, we know we have a comforter in the


New Testament, and we know who the comforter is. Let me start off with the word comforter and look at the Strong’s Concordance G3875 παρά κλητος paraklētos (par-ak'-lay-tos) An intercessor, consoler: advocate, comforter, Let’s go to our first verse. Joh 14:15 If ye love me, keep my commandments. Joh 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever; Joh 14:17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: {{{but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.}}} Joh 14:18 {{{{I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.}}}} Joh 14:19 Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; {{{{{but ye see me:}}}}} because I live, ye shall live also. Joh 14:20 At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you. Joh 14:21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, {{{{{{and will manifest myself to him.}} }}}} Joh 14:22 Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt {{{{{{manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world?}}}}}} Joh 14:23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, {{{{{and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.}}}}} Here we see what Christ means about the comforter, we also even have the question that was asked by the disciples for they too were confused in how Jesus was going to come to them. But here is the difference in what they thought and what is now being said. See they knew Christ was coming back to them, they just didn’t understand how he was going to do that, we can confirm that by looking at verse 22 and they said, “How is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world?” As you can see the question was how are you going to and not who are you going to send? This is where


confusion comes in when you have the understanding that there is a trinity god. Because it does say “another comforter”, which I will come to that statement here in a minute, first I want to cover the difference in understanding what Christ said and how the disciples understood and how with the trinity understanding can give you a totally different meaning and understanding of what Christ said. Now to the statement of Christ where he said “another comforter” and what is meant according to the context of that statement. First we need to see what that word is in Greek so we can know what the meaning of the word is. The Greek word is G243 ἄ λλος allos (al'-los) A primary word; “else” that is, different (in many applications): - more, one (another), (an-, some an-) other (-s, -wise). Total KJV occurrences: 160. I also did a search of the word “allos” as well to see what words where used and they are all used in different sentences, but what did Christ mean by another? Did he mean he would send someone other than himself? First we need to look at the context of the verse and look at some other verses that are related to the comforter and see if there are verses that would give a clearer understanding as to who is the comforter? Who is the Comforter? Is it Jesus or someone other than Jesus? Look at verse 17 and ask the question who was dwelling with them? Because Christ said “that the world will not see the comforter because the world does not know him, but you do know him and he dwells with you.” In this verse alone we can see that it is Christ that is the comforter, for Christ is the only one that is with them. I don’t want to stop there I want to give you more witness’. Let’s go to verse 18 and see what Christ said to the disciples, “I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.” Here we can see that Jesus was not going to leave them comfortless, but that can mean he would send someone and they would comfort them. But look at the last part of the verse, “I will come to you”. Here we can see clearly again that Jesus (Yahushua) is the comforter because Yahushua said “I will come to you” not someone else, not some other god, but Yahushua because they knew him and Yahushua said “you know him”. Looking at verse 19 as well Jesus clearly said “the world will not see me, but you see me”, who were they supposed to see? It was Jesus the son of God, Joh 14:26 KJV But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said


unto you. Joh 14:27 KJV Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. (John 14:26) But the Comforter G3875, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. (John 15:26) But when the Comforter G3875 is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me: Who is the Truth? It is none other than Christ, so from this we can understand that it is the spirit of Christ. Is the spirit some else, NO your spirit is you. So if the spirit of truth is the spirit of Christ than it is Christ that will come to them, is this a correct line of reasoning? Yes, but how does Christ come to them? Unseen by the world but they will see him and we will see him because we know him. (John 16:7) Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter G3875 will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. (1 John 2:1) My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate G3875 with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: You should be asking the question then. Why have we not been taught this? We have an advocate with the Father and it is Jesus Christ. Advocate and Comforter is the same thing. Other verse outside of parakletos but also comfort


2Co 7:6 KJV Nevertheless God, that comforteth those that are cast down 2Co 1:3 KJV Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; 2Co 1:4 KJV Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God. 2Co 1:5 KJV For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ. 2Co 1:5 (Good News Bible) Just as we have a share in Christ's many sufferings, so also through Christ we share in God's great help. 2Co 1:5 (God’s Word) Because Christ suffered so much for us, we can receive so much comfort from him. 2Co 1:5 (Literal Translation of the bible) Because even as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so also our comfort abounds through Christ. 2Co 1:5 (Young’s Literal Translation) Because, as the sufferings of the Christ do abound to us, so through the Christ doth abound also our comfort; We do not have someone else as our comforter, we have Jesus the son of God only, and we have the Father Jehovah that is here to comfort us in all things thru his Son. Praise Jehovah. We do not have some god the holy spirit to comfort us, you can accept but are you following the Bible? As for m y house we will serve the Lord and accept the Father and Son as our comfort.
