Editor’s welcome
THE april issue
Welcome
to the April issue, featuring an extended high summer fashion shoot from p16, health and fitness tips to help you get into shape for the holiday season from p14, plus exclusive new, reviews and interviews with the crème de la crème of the North West social scene. As fashion prep for Ladies’ Day and the Grand National hit fever pitch, we paid a visit to Liverpool ONE, where the view from our favourite stores had been transformed overnight with the addition of eye-catching ‘Fashionable Fences’. Sensing a photo-opportunity in the making, we pictured Liverpool’s most stylish shoppers against the fences for a Street Smart special on p24. We then returned to Liverpool ONE a few days later for one of our favourite fashion events of the season, a charmingly old-fashioned ‘Hat Walk’, during which models showcased this summer’s hottest hats while demonstrating hat etiquette tips. Turn to p33 for highlights of the ‘Hat Walk’ and to p29 for our hat etiquette guide in full. In between trips to Liverpool ONE for seasonal fashion inspiration, we were proud to join forces with Cavern Walks for last month’s big magazine handout, during which 2,000 free Cavern Walks bags, each containing a copy of the March issue, were given out to travellers. We’ll be back with more give-aways, offers and fashion news in May. See you next month.

The BIg beauty interview
His & Hers speaks exclusively to Sandra McLumpha, the woman behind the ‘Fake Bake’ empire, as she prepares to join forces with Tracey Bell for the next step in her stellar career. words: Emma Hill

his & hers Beauty
T
oday, a good fake tan is a year-round beauty essential for most women (and a surprisingly high percentage of men). However, when Fake Bake tycoon Sandra McLumpha entered the market in 2001, there were very few selftanning products available, and tanning beds were still a popular choice for those wanting a ‘healthy’ glow. Sandra explains: “At that time, I had my own beauty salon, which was very successful. Then my mum (who was a fan of sun beds) developed a melanoma under her eye.” Having seen first-hand the damage that people could do to their health in pursuit of the perfect tan, Sandra made it her mission to find a healthy alternative. When a sample of ‘Fake Bake’ landed on her doorstep, she decided to invite a salon employee who has pale, freckled skin and red hair to road-test it. The result was a subtle, natural glow. Sandra says: “I was so impressed that I sold my salon and bought the distribution rights to market ‘Fake Bake’ in the UK and Europe.” Sandra admits: “It was really hard at first because I had a product that no-one had heard of, and a team of just three people to launch it.” However, Sandra had soon established ‘Fake Bake’ as one of the self tan market leaders, and before long a host of celebrities, including Madonna, credited it with giving them their glow. ‘Fake Bake’ differs from rival brands in that the product reacts differently on different skin-types. As Sandra explained: “If five different people applied ‘Fake Bake’, you’d see five different shades developing, and that’s why it always looks so natural.” As the brand became increasingly successful, Sandra was able to take on more staff, ultimately establishing ‘Fake Bake’ as the UK’s leading salon professional self tan and spray tan brand. She says that her career highlight to date was winning Nat West’s ‘EveryWoman of the Year Award’ for entrepreneurial success. This led to a personal invitation from the Queen to go to the Palace to be recognised as one of Britain’s most successful women. Sandra is now seeking fresh challenges and has recently joined forces with Tracey Bell, introducing ‘Fake Bake’ to Tracey’s Hanover Street clinic. Tracey Bell will then open a clinic within Sandra’s Glasgow headquarters. The
12
two brands will also be working alongside each other to offer ‘Fake Bake’s’ tanning expertise alongside Tracey Bell’s anti-ageing products and treatments within Selfridges’ beauty halls nationwide. Sandra commented: “Tracey and I both have the same vision; we want to cater to women and men who want to look their best, but don’t have much time and demand fast results.” So could an anti-ageing self-tanner be on the cards? Sandra certainly isn’t ruling out the possibility. All she will say is that 2012 is shaping up to be a very exciting year. ‘Fake Bake’ spray tans are available from Tracey Bell, Hanover Street, for £30. www.fakebake.co.uk, www.traceybell.co.uk

Jane Grogan’s Fitness Focus
Every month, Jane Grogan will be sharing her expert advice on fitness, health, mindfulness and life solutions.
T
he goal of this month’s column is to help you to assess the way you think about food, and your eating habits. A great place to start is to keep a food diary: for a week or a month, write down everything you eat and drink. You may be surprised to see exactly what goes into your body, and it is interesting to match the results to daily recommended guidelines. Look for areas of concern and plan for improvement. You can also record your mood changes and hunger levels so you learn to distinguish when you’re eating for emotional reasons. Nutrition is a vast subject, with many conflicting views. The key is to find what works for you. Depending on special dietary requirements, allergies and intolerances, your diet will need to be adjusted accordingly. One size definitely doesn’t fit all. The important thing to remember is to at least take a look at what you’re eating and why you eat it. Start to think differently about food and what you put into your body. A greater understanding will help you to make more informed choices. Don’t go for a quick fix approach, it’s best to
14
steer clear of fad diets; in fact try not to think of your eating habits as a diet, but as a lifestyle choice. If you begin to visualise yourself as a healthy eater you are more likely to become one. It’s not just about educating yourself about which foods you should and shouldn’t eat, emotional triggers play a huge role in food selection - comfort eating being a prime example of an irrational learned behaviour. Do you comfort eat? Are you aware when you’re doing it but feel like you can’t stop? Eating balanced meals and sensible snacking will help to keep a steady flow of energy running through your body; therefore, if you know it’s not hunger driving you towards the fridge, trick your mind by distracting it with another activity. You need to learn how to motivate yourself and override negative thoughts - a good way of doing this is through positive actions. Earn extra brownie points for a fitness based distraction - the mini trampoline works for me! For help, advice or guidance with any of the above, email: janegrogan.oneself@gmail.com www.one-self.co.uK

STREET SMART
This month we spotted the city’s most stylish indulging in a spot of retail therapy near Liverpool ONE’s decorative ‘Fashionable Fences’. WORDS and PICTURES: Hannah ramsay
Dayna Austin, 23
Works in Retail We love the silhouette Dayna has created with her striking oversized fuchsia blazer from New Look combined with a top and leggings from Dorothy Perkins, New Look shoes and a bag sourced from eBay.
24
Jayne Bolger, 44
Hairdresser Glamorous Jayne teams a tailored Topshop jacket with a top from Mango and jeans from Ted Baker, and adds interest to her outfit with a Ri2K bag from John Lewis Liverpool ONE, and fab gold Carvela wedges.
Hannah Stubbs, 27
Event Coordinator for National Museums & Galleries, Merseyside Hannah has perfectly mixed high street and designer with her quirky All Saints coat, classic skinny trousers from Primark, New Look shoes and Prada bag. A printed scarf found at a local market adds some colour and texture.
Farah Muhana, 30
Parent Farah is the epitome of classic chic in her all black ensemble, wearing a beautifully cut DKNY jacket with a simple black top, Sala jeans and boots by ALDO. Note also the gorgeous gathered Michael Kors Handbag…
Chelsea McBride, 24
Assistant Manager at ALDO We really loved Chelsea’s softly tailored burgundy Boohoo jacket, which she wore over a simple patterned top from New Look and Zara jeans. And her cherry red shoes? From ALDO, Liverpool ONE, of course!
Amy Parker, 22
Art Student We spotted Amy’s Jeffrey Campbell boots from a mile off, and loved how she paired them with a simple Topshop coat, gold H&M jumper and blouse by American Apparel. The fur accessory that livens up her black bag was a recent find from eBay.
e
r r d
Accessorising is always the key to a well styled outfit; however too much can really make it look like you don’t know what you’re doing. So take a leaf out of Dayna’s book and use a simple gold watch as a style statement. Gold Watch, £25, Love Label at Debenhams
Dayna’s simple black T-shirt could be perceived as quite boring; however a classic tee can actually be more fashion conscious than you would think. Opt for one similar to this on trend ‘burn-out’ style T-shirt from Topshop if you want to earn yourself a few more fashion stripes. T-shirt, £14, Topshop
S teal her style This month we’ve chosen the lovely Dayna in her fuchsia blazer as our favourite Street Smart stylista!
You may love the bright colour pop of Dayna’s fuchsia jacket but not everyone’s as keen on the oversize blazer trend, so we’ve found a chic belted alternative. Jacket, £56, Preen/Edition at Debenhams
WORDS: Hester brodie Dayna has teamed her outfit with leggings, but with the shorter blazer we’ve suggest it’s best to go for jeans to keep that bum fully covered! Black Skinny Jeans, £55, Paul’s Boutique Dayna’s classic theme of all black looked great, especially when finished with smart patent shoes. So to finish off your look with the same ‘polished’ vibe we’d add these super cute block heel ballet pumps from boohoo.com. Cheap chic at its best! Black ballet pumps, £18, Boohoo.com
Dayna sourced her handbag through eBay, so we couldn’t bring you that particular one; however, this on-trend leopard print bag is the perfect alternative. Leopard Print Tote, £17.99, New Look

This month we thought we’d get ourselves thoroughly geared up for summer with some cute and quirky sunglasses... 1. Over the last few years the style of our sunglasses hasn’t particularly changed, but summer 2012 is all about stand out eyewear! So keep your eyes up to date with these purrrrrfect bright pink cat eye shape frames. Pink cat eye sunglasses, £9.50, M&S. 2. Wanting to take a sneaky glace at the gorgeous men folk showing off more than just a tan? Then these heart-shaped sunglasses are a must! Big enough even to keep your secret safe with us … AND FROM YOUR BOYFRIEND! Heart-shaped sunglasses, £6, boohoo.com 3. Ok! Ok! So maybe you’re not going to be rocking this look on your local high street, but we heart these sunglasses with a passion! They are the epitome of summer, aren’t they?! ... Exactly! So what’s not to love? Novelty sunglasses, £2, Primark. 4. Classic Wayfarers are always a safe bet, but don’t worry if you can’t afford RayBans. Florence & Fred at Tesco have designed these little gems with a funky side print for added summertime fun! Side printed wayfarers, £5, F&F at Tesco 5. There’s something slightly Willy Wonka about these but we’re loving them for it! Be bold in these statement sunnies and others are sure to follow. Orange sunglasses, £21, littlewoods.com 6. If monochrome is your thing then these glasses should definitely be on your spring/summer wardrobe list. We love their slightly 80s inspired feel, ideal for adding an edge to your outfit. Lisa Hames and Chantelle Latham
As undeniable forces in the acting and modelling industries, Lisa Hames and Chantelle Latham chose to join forces, creating the successful GModels agency. The agency offers a bit of extra spice to the world of modelling, introducing to the books not only outrageously beautiful models, but also an array of talents from fire breathers and magicians to highly trained dancers (not to mention the male models also having the talent to make us girls go a bit weak at the knees). Chantelle entered the industry at a young age and performed in the leading role of Kat Simmons on everyone’s favourite childhood show, Grange Hill. She says that this and other acting and modelling jobs gave her all the inside knowledge she needed to approach this new venture in her life. Her business partner, Lisa, had found great success in the modelling world, modelling for brands such as Versace and Benetton. While both organised their own fashion events, they decided to combine talents, launching GModels in July 2011. Since then, the business has gone from strength to strength with hundreds of potential stars from all over the country fighting for a place on their books. As well as providing models and talents for an array of events and companies, Lisa and Chantelle have also launched their own themed nights, providing a whole package of evening entertainment. An example of this was the ‘One Night Stand’ event held in CLUB KOTO, Southport. This was a Valentine’s themed event, and was filled with podium dancers, fabulously dressed models and, yes, the males painted head to toe in gold paint as your very own Cupids. A GModels event is not to be missed!
28
GModels is open to all applications; nobody is asked to pay any fees, and all portfolios are provided - they also encourage their models in every way, and say that although it is a business it really is more like a family. GModels are planning to take the modelling world by storm this year with their fresh new approach to the modelling scene and after their successful first nine months, already it’s onwards and upwards. www.gmodels.com

Hat Etiquette DOs & DON’Ts T
hese days it’s not very often that we get to don a hat or headpiece for a special occasion. Gone are the days when a hat was a daily accessory, so it’s no surprise that the age of the hat is well and truly over; but as hat guru Phillip Treacy says: “We all have a head so everybody has a possibility to wear a hat.” The races season has now kicked off so, to make sure you stay heads above the rest, we’ve put together a must-follow guide for wearing your hat correctly – and, most importantly, wearing it well.
1 2 3
First things first - You’re wearing the hat and not the other way round. Be confident but choose a style that ultimately you’re comfortable in. Traditionally, ladies decorate hats on the righthand side, the opposite to that of men, who always stick to the left. The time of day you’re wearing your hat should directly impact on your choice of headwear. Generally speaking, hats with brims or veils are not to be worn after sundown. Women’s hats are fashion accessories and are part of their ensembles. Therefore, ladies are not required to remove their hats when going indoors.
4
Gentlemen, on the other hand, should do so. Gentlemen are expected to tip or doff their hat as a greeting for fellow race-goers of either sex. A gentleman is particularly expected to tip his hat when greeting a lady in passing. Ladies, he’s also expected to remove his hat if he stops to speak with you. A simple one: it is considered rude to show the inside lining of your hat. When removing, tipping or doffing your hat, always ensure that only the outside is visible. Ladies should opt for elegant hats (and definitely not fascinators) - with a base smaller than four inches in diameter. Always be aware of your surroundings. Never knowingly obscure anyone’s view, and keep all of those pesky feathers at bay so they don’t poke anyone in the eye. And, finally, the golden rule of etiquette: any lady or gentleman of good breeding knows not to point out the faux pas of others who may not have read these key rules. All of the hats featured are available from Liverpool ONE.

Interiors Focus H&H: Why do you think there has been such an increase in the home scent market? Debbie: Entertaining at home is on the up. People are increasingly proud of their property, investing time and money into home styling and the small details. A smart scented home candle or scent diffuser is a simple way to create an atmosphere. H&H:

Debbie: Personality. Decorate your house with scent to match a mood or occasion or to complement the season. Lime Basil & Mandarin is refreshing in the summer months, whereas Pomegranate Noir will warm up winter evenings. Alternatively, the soft floral Red Roses is ideal for intimate, more feminine spaces such as the bedroom and bathroom. H&H: How can you use the new Scent Surround™ Collection for entertaining at home?

When staying in hotels, scatter travel candles in comforting scents around the bed and bath This month, His & Hers asked Debbie Wild (the Lifestyle Director at Jo Malone London, one of our all-time favourite fragrance brands) to share her secrets for creating the perfect ambient fragrance for your home. Debbie: Pomegranate Noir Scent Diffusers will perk up your entertaining space. Pomegranate, raspberry and plum, spiked with pink pepper, will heighten the mood and play on the senses. A simple outdoor table dressed with starched linens and napkins, tea lights and handpicked flowers are a must for alfresco dining in the summer months. The aroma of peppery basil, white thyme, and zesty citrus in Lime Basil & Mandarin Scent Diffusers will bring a lively twist to your garden setting.

Debbie: Absolutely, there are infinite ways to use scent. Suffuse the air with room sprays and scent diffusers. Adorn your wardrobe with limited edition Drawer Liners and Scent Sachets. Spritz napkins, pillows and towels with linen sprays. Use scent to welcome guests or simply to create an area of calm and relaxation for yourself. The possibilities are endless - and down to you.
Debbie: When staying in hotels, scatter travel candles in comforting scents around the bed and bath. New Scented Sachets are a clever travelling companion; fold them into your clothes and linens to keep fabrics fresh. The compact and innovative packaging makes them the ideal accessory. Most people associate home scents with candles.

S
ince joining the (‘cast’ is the wrong word) team at Tracey Bell, I’ve had to remind myself that I’m not in the sarcastically brilliant (because it’s true) film, ‘Mean Girls’. Not because I navigate the hierarchy of a cafeteria, nor because I’ve had the gall to fancy the ex of a ‘Plastic’, but simply (sadly) because I’ve had the audacity to be successful when others weren’t. I love Liverpool. I’ve lived here all my life, and although flirting briefly with London and having an on/off thing with Manchester (I was young and foolish then), I’m always safe at home. But I don’t feel as safe or as comfy in my home or skin since finding myself the subject or worse implied subject of the cyberbully/gossip. I’m middle-aged. I’m not down with the kids (although I do pick them up when they fall): I simply tweet for work and have two Facebook accounts. Have you ever had the horrible feeling when flicking through a newsfeed that the ambiguous quote is aimed at you? That the ‘friend’ isn’t that after all, or that you’re being picked on or laughed at? I have. It’s upsetting. I thought I was being egotistical until friends confirmed how statuses were discussed in ‘real’ life in bars across my City. I was horrified. And I felt bullied. (And 12).
32
I learnt a valuable lesson – and one I hear relayed back to me by corporate and celebrity clients: your own successes may bring out the best in yourself, but may encourage the worst in others. At (really) 12, my Mum taught me that if most people were nice, you wouldn’t notice when a few weren’t. She’s dead clever, my Mum. So I’ve blocked the people who have problems and conversations about how well I’m doing and spend my downtime injecting carbs into Slimscription bars. But only to hand to the mean girls – honest. Liz will be back with more tales from her life in the beauty industry next month.
‘Not Afternoon Tea’
His & Hers was excited to sample ‘Not Afternoon Tea’ at Harvey Nichols, Manchester. Following the success of the launch at the OXO Restaurant in London, ‘Not Afternoon Tea’ has made its way to Manchester. Harvey Nichols’ pastry chefs and mixologists have paired up to create a selection of sensational desserts, accompanied by carefully chosen cocktails. His & Hers recommends the white chocolate brûlée and dark chocolate pavé, set off by the Crème de Cacao and chocolate bitters in the Milk Punch cocktail chocolate heaven! Not Afternoon Tea is available in the Harvey Nichols Second Floor Brasserie daily from 2-5pm for just £12.50.

Stylists were also on hand to give advice on choosing the perfect outfit. Donna Howitt, Marketing Director at Liverpool ONE, said: “We know that the women of Liverpool are some of the most stylish in the world and we want to give them the tools to top off their races outfits with world class etiquette, too.”
Harvey Nichols’ Fashion Show
Harvey Nichols’ Fashion Show attracted style editors from throughout the UK to see the season’s key looks from the UK’s leading fashion designers. His & Hers stylist Bryan Harrop commented: “I loved the presentation of the show, which attracted a host of celebrities, fashion editors, stylists and fashionistas. It’s got to be one of the best fashion shows outside of London because of the huge amount of organisation that goes into the event. It definitely has the X-factor!”

STREET SMART Well I think it is clear that the weather is starting to warm up as our northern toffs are back on the streets. WORDS & pictures: Luke Trevaskis
Christian, 19 Danny, 21 Model We waited at the bottom of the Metquarter’s escalators to grab Christian as he descended from fashion heaven. Wearing a jacket from All Saints, Armani jeans, a Diesel belt and Kurt Geiger shoes, Christian was like a walking advert for all things Metquarter.
36
We managed to convince Danny to spare us a few minutes as he rushed to watch the match. Sporting a Jack Wills jacket and American Apparel T-shirt, he keeps it in the pastel family with coral FCUK chinos and Dune boat shoes. Don’t worry Danny – we won’t mention the score!
Jamie, 19
Calvin Klein Manager Looking every inch the sartorial gentleman, Jamie even treated us to a glass of champagne to celebrate Calvin Klein’s 1st birthday in L1. With a smart Reiss blazer and Kurt Geiger shoes, Jamie opted for wellfitted Topman pants and a classic CK tee.
John, 23
Communications Manager Caught amongst fronds of pasta and a dough-beater in Bellini, I am convinced John had phoned Danny that morning to discuss a coral theme! As 50% of one of Liverpool’s power couples, it is important John stays ahead of the competition. Get his look from all things Liverpool ONE.
Sean, 18
Student Despite his big strides, we couldn’t let Sean pass though our style net. After a small chase, we finally caught up with him on Whitechapel. With a very high fashion look, Sean brought his Primark jacket and Next hat to life with his Topman pants and shoes.
Thomas, 19
Sports Student Rocking the student look, Thomas looked every inch the stylish sporty type. Pairing his red shoes from Resurrection with his Primark hoodie, Thomas keeps his look simple with H&M jeans, a Zara T-shirt and a hat from Liverpool’s much-loved Quiggins.
It is always good to complete a simple look like this with a good quality statement piece. This antique tan perforated leather Brad jacket frames Christian’s look, adding that je ne sais quoi. £985, Belstaff, www. my-wardrobe.com

There are not going to be many people without sunglasses this season and what could be more popular than our trusted Ray-Bans? These tortoiseshell rectangles are £160 from Silverberg Opticians.
Christian’s look is typically European and is such a versatile combination that there few occasions where this outfit wouldn’t be appropriate. WORDS: Luke Trevaskis
When you need an item to combine a look, something as simple as a white tee can often be all it takes. As there are so many prints and tie-dyes this season, keep your base palette simple. £7, Topman.
It always amazes me when designer brands charge through the roof for their belts when you can pick up the same quality for a fraction of the price. This dark brown chino belt is only £12 from Topman.
Good quality jeans can seem to last a lifetime. These Sloture jeans are £95 from Ted Baker. To keep my jeans lasting longer, I usually freeze them to kill all the bacteria and watch any dirt just crumble off.

HUNTING FOR INSPIRATION People draw inspiration for their looks from various places. I have always been a great lover of combining fashion with music, and a great record label that has come onto my radar this month is Deep Water Recordings. Conceived by DeeBuGG, an underground dance music duo born and bred in the city, Deep Water Recordings are establishing themselves as an international label. When reminiscing on the recent catwalk camouflage trends, this label always springs to mind. ecrets: whether big or small, outrageous or commendable, serious or silly, we all have them but that doesn’t necessarily make them a good thing. People can be keeping secrets for many different reasons: to save embarrassment, to keep people happy, to create an image for the world to believe and ultimately a vision for themselves to believe. That’s all well and good but I don’t agree that secrets are healthy; in fact, I’d argue the opposite. Secrets are like a poison. Secrets ultimately lead to lies. Lies lead to trouble. If we build enough secrets up inside, a big enough web of lies, then we’ll lose touch of ourselves and who we really are. Why do we feel the need to lie? Why do we feel the need to keep secrets? The more we lie to others, the more we are lying to ourselves. Secrets are often regrets. What kind of life are you trying to live if you are hiding things? We’re not allperfect; we all have things we are ashamed of, but
keeping them locked away isn’t always the best option. I speak from personal experience. Lately I’ve come to terms with the fact that I’ve been hiding a dark secret for many years now. I’ve sneaked about, lied and fibbed. I’ve even had a very select few friends and family lie for me, cover me while I pretend to others and live a lie. I think it’s time that I opened up to the world, shared my secret. I am proud of who I am and no one can change that. What better way to reveal my dark secret, something I’ve hidden from for years, than by publishing it in this magazine, for all to see. So here it goes: I like McFly. No. I love them. Danny, Dougie, Tom and Harry. I love their songs. I know all the words. I’ve even seen them live. How many times? It doesn’t matter. So that’s me. I am what I am. I’m a McFly fan. Deal with that, world!

Myth Two:
Myth One:
You’ll never see a clock in a casino. This was true many years ago, but these days you’ll find clocks in most casinos. Our job here at Leo Casino is to make sure people are having fun so they want to stay, not to rely on underhand tactics like hiding the clocks!
The dealers can influence the game by spinning specific numbers or sections of the wheel when you’re playing Roulette. If this was true, we’d go out of business for many reasons but mainly because the Gambling Commission would not allow us to operate an unfair game. Myth Three:
Casino owners tend to be gangsters. This is a complete myth, because ours is one of the most heavily regulated industries. Since the 1968 Gaming Act was implemented, it’s been incredibly difficult to get a gaming licence, and you’re far more likely to see a gangster working at your local supermarket than at a casino.
Myth Four:
Casinos are either like James Bond sets, filled with Fabergé eggs and models in evening gowns, or smoky gambling dens. The reality is that we don’t conform to either extreme – most casinos are less glamorous than some films suggest, but less seedy than the opposite stereotype. We create an environment where everyone can come and have a good time.
Exploring the most popular myths about casinos This month, Miles Dixon, the manager of Gala Leo (Liverpool’s biggest casino) explodes a few of the most enduring myths about casinos.
Myth Five:
You can’t lose if you bet red and black on Roulette. Trust me, you can! When the number zero comes in (and it will eventually) you lose half your bet. Myth SIX:
Systems or superstitions make a difference when playing games of chance like Roulette. I’ve worked at casinos for a number of years and I have seen a lot of people try a lot of ‘systems/superstitions’. Some people have more success than others, and some systems may even work, although I am a sceptic. The reason I say this is that the facts speak for themselves: a whole industry survives year after year, and if rabbits’ feet really were lucky then we would be in a lot of trouble!
40
Myth SEVEN:
The casino always wins. In the long run, the casino always wins, this is true, but in the short term we win and lose like everyone else.
Myth eight:
Roulette was invented by a French monk who went mad trying to beat the game that he invented. In truth, Roulette developed over many years and its modern form was introduced by a French mathematician named Blaise Pascal.

H
ave you ever stepped down a quiet side street and stumbled upon a hidden gem, one of those rare restaurants that offers world-class cuisine and pristine service without any showiness or pretensions? His & Hers occasionally finds such hidden gems on our holidays, but recently we realised that one of the North West’s most impressive new restaurants was hidden under our noses at Whitechapel. Bellini lacks the high profile high street location and stopping power of some of its restaurant rivals, but if you make a slight detour from your usual journey through the city, we promise that Bellini will repay the effort. Once inside the restaurant, His & Hers had barely had time to take stock of the interior design (think simple, understated chic) before attentive waiters had whisked away our coats and served up some of the best Bellinis we’ve sipped outside of Italy, served with complimentary appetisers. While sipping our drinks, we spotted several of our Liverpool neighbours enjoying a leisurely dinner; they jokingly reprimanded us for taking so long to discover Bellini, which opened its doors several months ago. Keen to play catch up, we ordered a delicious sharing platter, featuring wafer
thin cured meats. Taking a truly Italian approach to cooking, Bellini keeps things simple, using only the best quality ingredients, and serving them with flair. We ended the evening with a taster menu of desserts, which we cannot recommend highly enough, and a final round of cocktails, to the sound of other diners praising the simple, classic cooking. The proud owners of the restaurant, Bruno, Carlo, Giovanni and Raffaele – four of Italy’s most talented imports to the North West’s foodie scene – have a hands-on approach to the business, welcoming guests personally whenever possible and bidding diners a cheery farewell. Having nurtured their craft and honed their experience through years of training and perfecting family recipes, the result is a seasonal menu that takes a contemporary approach to traditional flavours and combinations. With excellent ingredients, many of which come direct from Italy, everything is made in-house, ensuring that this place is a treasure trove of truly regional treats. If you’re seeking an alternative to your usual Italian eatery, we’d highly recommend paying a visit to this excellent newcomer.

It boasts a most beautiful chandelier, which sets the tone for the salon. H & H: What has shaped your vision and how did you get started? I also trained in dentistry, so I’m ideally placed to offer a wide perspective on

H & H: What‘s the overall look for summer? Mark: My vision for summer would be: feel the sunshine, and less is more. I’d recommend Tracey Bell Clinic’s microdermabrasion and fruit acid peel treatments, which both Chris and I use regularly, to achieve healthy, silky smooth skin. I am a big fan of Bobbi Brown’s bronze shimmer brick that illuminates and is infused with mulberry, grape and scutellaria (a burst of sunshine). The overall look would be: defining eyeliner, matte lip colour (pastels on lips and nails) and lashings of mascara! Tracey Bell offers Fake Bake (fake tan with a delicious coconut aroma that looks like the real thing). H & H: How do you visualise hair styles for the summer? Chris: I feel there are two distinctive looks for hair this summer: be it long and flowing or short and structured pixie style, I think hair will be enhanced with warm vibrant colour, strawberry blonde or burnished copper – rays of sunshine in your hair.
