WELCOME TO THE SUMMER STYLE EDITION OF HIS & HERS MAGAZINE. I hope this summer’s associated with good times and holidays for you. At the very least, I hope it’s brought you some of those amazing moments when you’re walking down the street and because, for once, you’re not battling gale force winds or torrential rain, you suddenly look up and realise just how beautiful things tend to look when the sun’s shining.
Emma Hill Editor
In between savouring our summer strolls through the city, we’ve been having fun working on lots of new features for you. One of our highlights was shooting some of Jennie Blake’s top picks from Next’s summer collection. Before the first photograph had even been taken the entire team working on the shoot had picked out the key pieces we’d be buying. This made it a potentially expensive but incredibly fun day. As ever, a big thank you is due to Chantelle Craig and Alice Gregory from Next for making these shoots possible. You’ll find our Next summer essentials from p10, and we’ll be bringing you a sneak preview of their best a/w looks in the next edition. Following this shoot, we were excited to attend the launch of Jo Malone London’s newest charity garden in Manchester. Each of the Jo Malone London charity gardens provide beautiful and tranquil green spaces where people can improve their mental and physical health by gardening or simply sitting and enjoying the views. It’s been so nice to see them springing up around the country and as they’re being funded through the brand’s limited edition candle sales, this also provides the perfect excuse to do your bit for charity by indulging in a spot of retail therapy (and if you buy one of the candles for a friend, you’re basically doing something good for others twice!) Find out more about Jo Malone London’s charity gardens on p20. Continuing with the floral theme, my green fingered mum, Jean Hill, who’s spent decades creating her own beautiful gardens, shares her highlights from this year’s Chelsea Flower Show from p62. And if all that gardening sounds a bit too much like hard work, why not indulge with treats from one of our lovely summer edition sponsors, Treatwell. We’ve had a ball creating our summer features and owe a very big thank you to the brands including Next, Treatwell, Primark, Malmaison, Spire, Mococo, The Spa Suites, Il Forno, Sapporo, the Titanic Hotel, the Bierkeller, Epic, Morecrofts, Silverberg, Hotel Indigo and the House Beauty Spa who’ve made all of this possible. We’ll be back soon with our autumn/winter edition. In the meantime, we’ll be wishing you a beautiful Indian summer filled with sights, sounds and memories worth reading or writing about!

WHEN HIS & HERS VISITED
Jo Malone London’s Art Garden This summer, His & Hers paid a visit to Manchester’s beautiful Art Garden, the latest stunning green space which has been created as part of Jo Malone London’s charitable initiative.
H
aving previously visited Jo Malone London’s charity garden in Kirkdale, which had its official opening in 2014, it was exciting to see another tranquil green space being created by the brand in the North West. When His & Hers spoke with the Jo Malone London team, their passion for the gardens they’ve been creating was palpable, perhaps due in part to the fact that they’ve all been spending some time tending these beautiful new gardens and meeting with the people they help. In a statement for the brand, they explained: “Jo Malone London supports people living with mental ill health through the cultivation and care of therapeutic gardens. Each garden is a place to recover, grow and reconnect with a community. “In Manchester we are supporting the creation of The Art Garden at the Whitworth, part of The University of Manchester. The Art Garden (which opened in June) has been created by renowned garden designer, Sarah Price, in partnership with the GROW Project and Jo Malone London. The GROW Project supports local people who are experiencing social isolation or living with mental ill health. Working together in the garden allows each individual to learn new horticultural skills as well creating a nurturing sense of community.” Sarah’s design is focused on waves of texture, colour and scent which reveal themselves throughout the seasons. The planting scheme includes some of Jo Malone London’s most-loved ingredients from peonies to bluebells, sage and geranium.
20
The Art Garden will be cultivated and cared for through the sale of a Jo Malone London Charity Candle. This year it is Peony & Moss, with a donation equal to 75% of the retail price (less VAT) going directly to the charities Jo Malone London works with.

THE SCENT OF SUMMER:
BASIL & NEROLI Earlier this summer, His & Hers was delighted to attend the launch of Basil & Neroli, Jo Malone London’s big fragrance launch for the season.
The Basil & Neroli Collection, available from September: Home Candle 200g, £42, Cologne 30ml, £43, 100ml, £86, Body & Hand Wash 250ml, £28, Body Crème 175ml, £50. 22
P
ress from around the world were treated to ‘A London Lark’, introducing them to a scent which has been inspired by London at its most fashionably young and fun.
With floral neroli and a fresh hint of basil, this scent is described as being ‘Quintessentially British, always playful’ and ‘Fresh, fun and full of adventure.’ This fragrance is fresh yet very subtle, combining floral and green elements and we’ve been gently spritzing with this clever, layered scent while working on this edition. We’d highly recommend this sophisticated fragrance, which will take you from daytime to evening. Look out for it when it’s introduced to Jo Malone stores and via their website this September.

IS THIS SUMMER’S
BIGGEST HAIR TREND? Could you swap your curly blow for something with a little more grit...
I
f next season’s catwalk hair trends are anything to go by then smooth and shiny is out; rough and ready is in. Designers from Topshop Unique to Gucci sent models down their runways with hair so beautifully dishevelled, it could only be the work of a messy blow. Set to sweep across the nation and shove sleeker styles off the blow dry menu, the messy blow turns the classic blow dry on its head and uses heat and styling to build texture, tousles and attitude. If you need a visual then think Rosie Huntington-Whiteley meets Courtney Love. To put it bluntly, it’s the hair you have at the end of the party, rather than the beginning. Contrary to popular belief, no amount of dry shampoo or backcombing can create the same effect. Good messy (as opposed to bad messy) requires a freshly washed head of hair and skilled set of styling hands to inject just the right amount of grunge. It should be soft and touchable, but textured and voluminous. We discovered that the team at Treatwell are already gearing up for this fresh, new take on the blow-out 26
by working with their go-to salons to make sure it’s available on a high street near you. In Liverpool, Button Street salon Voodou is leading the way. ‘This season’s hot trend is more ‘undone’ than ‘done’.’ explains Sally Marlow, marketing and project manager at Voodou. ‘Whilst the curly blow is still popular, more and more of Voodou’s clients are asking for ‘messy ‘do’s’ and a more natural ‘just stepped off the beach look’ for this summer. It’s not for everyone, and there are girls who still want those perfect curls, but a more bohemian feel is definitely sweeping across the city.’ Voodou have partnered with Redken to develop a series of natural ‘do’s’ and all their stylists are trained to deliver that perfect ‘messy blow’ as demand looks set to increase over the coming months. Our favourite thing about it? The longer you have it, the better it looks. Four days into a messy blow and you’ll love it even more than the day you had it. All that’s left for you to do is throw on your leather jacket and you’re ready to go!

OH ME OH MAMA MAKING THE WORLD SMILE ONE MAMA AT A TIME
W
e love the concept behind Oh Me Oh Mama: it’s made for mamas, by mamas, providing gifts of carefully selected, essential products to help women on their journey into motherhood. When a new baby enters the world, it gives many people, especially new parents, hope, happiness and a sense of purpose in life. Hearts are blessed, bonds are formed and the love you feel inside burns deeper than anything you’ve ever experienced before. But, what happens when a new mum is made? Brains are reborn and priorities change. Sometimes it can be difficult to pull yourself away as your new mothering instincts start to kick in. However, sometimes you’ve just got to give yourself a break and remember to make some time for you, Alishia, founder of Oh Me Oh Mama told us. The new #makeamamasmile project has been launched as a special way of sending mothers across the world a simple box of happiness in the post to let them know they are in someone’s thoughts. It’s always great knowing someone is thinking of you and it’s a great way to reassure new mama’s that their hard work is not going unnoticed. Every month a new mama will be chosen to receive a special hand picked hamper.
If you know a mama who could do with a little smile, visit www.ohmeohmama.com to nominate them. 32

A SLICE OF PARADISE AT
MAYA BLUE SPA
I was welcomed into Maya Blue Spa by the ever-smiling and polite staff, where there is an immediate sense of calm. The rippling of the candle lit, deep blue waters reflect onto the historic red brick arches that surround the hydrotherapy pool, steam room, sauna and samarium. It’s a warm, tranquil space to enjoy. There are an array of facials, wraps and massages to choose from if you also want to indulge yourself with a treatment. I opted for the ‘Tangle me Up Body Wrap’ that is designed to revitalise the skin and rid the body of harmful toxins to help fight cellulite and improve elasticity and skin tone. For the next sixty minutes I was left in the capable hands of my highly skilled therapist. The treatment started with a full body brushing that was thoroughly relaxing and relieving. In a blissful state of mind, a warm seaweed enriched compound was then delicately sprinkled onto my skin and massaged in. I was then wrapped up warm in muslin cloth, and my therapist used further relaxing massage techniques on my scalp while the nutrients of the seaweed compound took effect. The treatment ended in a full body application of luxurious, organic VOYA body cream that was massaged in using gentle, gliding hand strokes. The products and techniques had long lasting results and I left feeling refreshed with silky, rejuvenated skin that had a summer glow, while my muscles felt supple after the massage techniques worked out aches.

HIS&HERS FITNESS
ROBYN MCGLINCHEY’S HEALTH & FITNESS SECRETS
I
n this crazy busy world of fast paced technology, instant information and insane schedules, I have become acutely aware of the need for simplicity in my life. I can sum this up in one word: breathing! Breathing is the very essence of our existence. It is the key to calmness, inner peace and the absence of stress. Yet, certainly for me, it is something I do without thought, focus or attention. Until I hit my Pilates mat! Oxygen forms part of almost every chemical reaction within our bodies so we need plenty of it. Indeed, our muscles cannot function without oxygen and it is for this reason that Joseph Pilates built his exercises around it. The purposeful breathing patterns specifically use the muscle contractions to help our bodies work hard but with control and support while on the mat (or equipment). Our breath leads the movement and gives it power. But there’s so much more to it. Our breathing can influence our inner self, and our thoughts and psychology can influence our breath. The two are entwined. Breathing fully and deeply, with intention and focus, centres us. It frees tension in the body, relieves stress and encourages the release of endorphins which boosts a sense of well-being. Deep breathing exercises can be used for almost anything. There is a wealth of information available 38
on the subject and entire books dedicated to it. Physically, deep breathing stimulates the internal organs, including the heart, thereby increasing the circulation of oxygen and the expulsion of stale air. It is the most accessible internal cleansing mechanism, supporting the lymphatic system to help rid the body of toxins. Psychologically, deep breathing can be used to combat fatigue, boost energy and vitality. Similarly, it can fight the negative impact of anxiety and anger, helping to restore mind and body to a balanced state. It is no wonder then that after each Pilates session, I feel far more relaxed and happy than when I started but yet feel energised and ready for more. The purposeful breathing through each exercise sees to this. Pilates teaches us to use the space within our lungs fully, breathing deeply into all corners of the ribcage. It brings fluidity and strength to the movements, creating, at least in my body, a sense of grace and elegance – positive feelings in any woman’s book! So, the challenge I put to myself, and to you, this summer: bring that deep, purposeful, intentional breathing into every part of every day. Fill your lungs and fill your life with the goodness of breath.

If champagne isn’t your poison, relax with a tall Mojito to the mellow sounds of live music all day long in one of the cabana day beds, or in the evening enjoy the transformation into a cool destination with entertainment from around the world, all against the magnificent backdrop of Liverpool’s Three Graces. We indulged in the latest trend of ‘Champagne On The Rocks’ with Moët Ice and Veuve Clicquot Rich, with fruits and mint. This is the latest style of sipping champagne and new to the UK after successful trials in St Tropez, Ibiza and Miami. Bubbles Beach Club also has a selection of chefs serving up the ultimate BBQ, including prime beef sliders, king prawns and lobster in its dedicated area. Bubbles Champagne Lounge and Bubbles Beach Club opens every day throughout summer until 11pm.

GAP GETS ADDICTED TO DENIM Cut out the changing room trauma that often comes with trying to find that perfect pair of figure-flattering jeans.
T
his has been at the forefront of Gap’s mission and we believe they’ve found the perfect alchemy to creating such jeans. The silhouettes are ultra flattering, the denim so comfortable to wear, and the new ‘drop-in’ or appointment-based ‘Denim Addict’ service allows you to meet with one of the specialist advisors, who are trained in denim styling, Gap’s fabrications and fit, as well as hemming. The His & Hers team attended the launch of the in-store styling & hemming service at the Liverpool ONE store to try the huge selection of stretches, washes and fits. From the true skinny to crop kick, there is a style to suit every body shape, and the Denim Addicts are on-hand to ensure you leave with the jeans you are looking for. 46
In store, the Denim Addicts are positioned in easyto-find stations within the men’s and women’s denim departments. They have a full working knowledge of Gap’s seasonal denim styles and core collections, key trends, fit and fabrication. There is a distressing service to add detailing to your jeans, and on appointment you can experience an in-store measure and pin before your jeans are then hemmed on-site, both available free of charge. There is also a loyalty Programme, in which you can gain a stamp for every pair of jeans purchased, and after a fifth stamp you can receive a free pair of jeans.

CREATE THE
ULTIMATE OUTDOOR SPACE
Start with function and layout. Will you be hosting large parties or will the area be for private, more intimate gatherings? It’s crucial to define at the outset how you’d like the space to be used so that this can guide your design decisions. Offer a little home comfort to your guests. Parties and gatherings at home can last all day and night, therefore it’s important to be able to offer comfort with some sofas and seating. You can always get covers to protect your furniture for those rainy days. Give your outdoor living space maximum style with interior-inspired features and technology. For instance a dramatic focal point such as a stone fireplace or fire pit can make your outdoor room feel magical and very on-trend. A good outdoor sound system or speaker will also create added ambience. For that seamless transition between inside and out, consider matching the outdoor flooring with the indoor or installing bi-fold doors to make the al fresco living space feel like a true extension of your home. It also ensures that while meals are being cooked indoors, hosts can still feel a part of the party.
E
dward Jonas, Managing Director and owner of Chester-based Staycold, has shared his advice on making the most of your outdoor living space.
Ed has over 30 years’ experience working with some of the world’s leading venues including Hyatt, Mariott, the Shard and the Royal Albert Hall in London. Staycold is the maker of Blastcool, the prestigious new range of purpose-built outdoor drinks coolers for the home.
It’s important to have somewhere to store food and drink within easy access of your guests, so that they feel that they can help themselves. For example our Blastcool GSP series, which takes drinks from room temperature to perfect serve five times faster than the average household refrigerator, is ideal for those last minute gatherings.
Edward told us: “With more and more people heading abroad on holiday and indulging in luxury for a week or two, there’s many looking to recreate that five-star experience and holiday feeling at home.
Lush greenery can really enhance your outdoor living space, adding extra ambience and tranquillity without costing the earth. An abundance of greenery can soften more contemporary spaces and designs and also help to divide the outdoor area into zones, acting as natural dividers for the space.
“A beautiful al fresco space can transform a property, not to mention provide that much needed escape to unwind from modern life. Whether you’re planning on building a new outdoor room or upgrading an existing one, here are our top tips for creating the ultimate outdoor entertaining area.”

he charity screening event in July was in aid of Radio City’s Cash for Kids, where guests were treated to a drink on arrival, photo booth and the obligatory bag of popcorn before taking their seats to be the first in the region to see the movie. After the movie guests made their way to the Hilton Hotel to enjoying a three course lunch, followed by a DJ to keep the party going in the PIMA Bar.
ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS FUNDRAISING LUNCH
Two hundred local ladies, and a few brave men, took to the red carpet at the Odeon Cinema Liverpool One for the eagerly awaited Absolutely Fabulous movie.
The movie boasts over 60 cameo roles from a host of celebrities including Liverpool model and presenter Abbey Clancey. She said: “I have been a huge fan of ‘Ab Fab’ my whole life. Such wonderful characters, outrageous fun and dripping in high fashion, so when I was offered a small cameo in the film I literally jumped at the chance to see the girls in action. It was an honour to be part of” Carolyn Hughes, organiser of the event told us: “As soon as I knew the movie was being made I planned to host a Liverpool premiere. It was a great way to see the movie in the company of 200 excited people and then sit down for lunch at the Hilton Hotel and dissect it in every hilarious detail. Also, the fact that we raised £14,000 makes it Absolutely Fabulous”. The next Premiere Screening Lunch will be Bridget Jones’s Baby on 16th September - at the Odeon Liverpool One, followed by a three course lunch with entertainment at the Hilton Hotel. Tickets are £50 each and funds will again be raised for Radio City’s Cash for Kids. Call 0151 472 6965 to secure your tickets.

DELICIOUSLY ELLA ON HER COLLABORATION WITH NEAL’S YARD “As I became more conscious about what I was putting into my body, I started thinking more and more about what I was using on my skin. If my recipes contained only the best ingredients, why shouldn’t my skincare? With this in mind, I wanted to create a line of natural skincare products that made looking and feeling your best as easy as possible.”
E
lla Mills, creator of the award winning Deliciously Ella lifestyle blog and author of Amazon’s number one best selling book of 2015, has launched a beautiful new skincare collection with Neal’s Yard remedies. The debut collection launches with a rose, lime and cucumber facial wash and moisturiser to gently cleanse, remove impurities, and nourish all skin types.
Why the partnership with Neal’s Yard Remedies? When I changed the way I ate I started looking at the types of products I used on my skin and switched to natural and organic skincare, and immediately fell in love with NYR products. I worked with them to develop recipes for their superfoods and the more I worked with them the more I learnt and understood about the importance of choosing organic when it came to skincare – sustainability, impact on the world etc. Our values were so aligned, making them the natural choice.
Why did you want to create a skincare range? My followers already know that I love making products myself using ingredients in my kitchen like coconut oil and avocado, but it’s not always convenient to do this when you’re always on the go. So working with NYR, we created products that work, using ingredients that I love. 54
Why did you choose the ingredients that you did? In our first meetings the NYR team asked me what I wanted from a skincare range. Radiance and a natural glow were key, but I wanted the products to smell beautiful and feel great on my skin as well. We worked on a ‘shopping list’ of ingredients and I chose the ones which resonated with me most. The ingredients I chose are all my favourite beauty foods – I use them in my cooking for their benefits internally, but they also have amazing benefits for the skin when used topically.
How important do you think the relationship between food and beauty is? When you’re not feeding your body with nutritious ingredients, it often shows on your skin so choosing foods that are packed with the vitamins and minerals your skin needs will nourish your skin. Smoothies and juices are an easy way to get lots of fresh produce into your body in a quick, simple manner – perfect if you’re really busy! Looking after your skin from the outside is equally as important to keep it in optimum condition – particularly if you’re living in the city. I apply the same concept to choosing skincare as I do to choosing food – looking for the most natural, organic ingredients possible.

NEW-LOOK
MARCO PIERRE WHITE STEAKHOUSE BAR & GRILL COMES TO LIVERPOOL Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill Liverpool at Hotel Indigo has undergone a radical renovation and refurbishment programme. 58

A
lmost complete, the bar and grill has a modern, chic new look. Urban in design, the reinvented restaurant mixes the industrial fixtures and fittings of warm coppers and weathered woods, with stately brown leather chairs, exposed brick walls and muddied hues; while vibrantly coloured cotton spools, record players and music iconography pays homage to the rich industrial heritage of the restaurant’s location on Chapel Street – once the thriving epicentre of the city’s cotton trade – and Liverpool’s enduring music legacy.
As part of the reinvention will come a brand new menu, designed by Marco himself, featuring classic dishes made using a range of seasonal ingredients, with steak remaining very much at the heart, all sourced from Royal Warrant appointed butcher, Campbell Brothers. Marco’s new lounge menu will also delight guests with a selection of sharing plates, classic sandwiches and hearty salads - easy, vibrant and express for those in a hurry.
which combines some of our most popular dishes with a host of exciting new additions, all reflecting Marco’s passion for classic food done consistently well. The new lounge menu in particular is a great new addition to our food offer, and perfect for those wanting a quick lunch stop in between meetings.” Marco Pierre White said: “Classic dishes, simply cooked using the best, well-sourced, seasonal ingredients, is the ethos behind all of my steakhouse restaurants. The menu is all about traditional British dishes. I want to smell the food when I walk through the restaurant and I want a hearty portion that comes without pretence.” Diners can explore an exciting new range of starters, main courses and desserts at the new look restaurant. Alongside classic steak cuts including fillet, rib-eye and Chateaubriand, Côte de Boeuf from the Duke of Buccleuch Estates is a brand new sharing option for guests to enjoy. Reflecting Marco’s passion for simplicity, there’s also a range of exciting new main courses aside from steak. From Pork Belly Marco Polo, to Seared Yellowfin Tuna Steak and The Steakhouse Burger, the new menu is filled with favourites designed to stand the test of time.
To make a reservation call Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill Liverpool on 0151 559 0555 or visit www.mpwrestaurants.com
Mark Tasker, general manager at Hotel Indigo Liverpool, told us: “These are exciting times for the restaurant, the hotel and our guests, as we set about an evolution of the Marco Pierre White brand here in Liverpool. Five years ago we were one of the first “celebrity chef restaurants” to arrive in the city. Others have since joined us, but Marco is the Godfather of modern cooking, a true original, and this renovation enables us to reestablish his rightful place at the top of Liverpool’s restaurant scene. “We are also thrilled to launch a brand new menu, 59

THE LONDON ADVENTURE We got there with Virgin Trains, stayed at The Park Tower, Knightsbridge and Hotel Indigo, Kensington, and visited RHS Chelsea Flower Show. WORDS: Jean Hill

HIS&HERS TRAVEL
P
art of the excitement and ritual surrounding the RHS Chelsea Flower Show is getting the all-important e-mail to welcome His & Hers magazine to Press Day at RHS Chelsea. This triggers a flurry of activity to organise the London trip. We met on a sunny Sunday morning, waving Virgin First Class train tickets, which is where the adventure began. Our editor never switches off, and WIFI is complimentary in First Class, as are snacks and soft drinks (on a weekend when you can upgrade for £10 upwards). On week days, staff serve complimentary full English breakfasts, healthy appetising lunches, and a choice of delicious evening meals, depending on your time of travel. It was ‘asparagus week’ on our return journey, and the evening meal options came with locally sourced, very fresh asparagus, that made it all seem rather special. My own option, Tuna Niçoise, was delicious, and I’m in awe of the staff who poured seriously hot coffee and tea as the train gently swayed (I imagine this involves intensive training). The First Class Lounge, which we visited at Euston, was a real benefit. It’s spacious, it’s comfortable, you can access WIFI, and the soft
drinks are complimentary, and it’s away from the hustle and bustle on the concourse. Pendolino trains get you there comfortably and speedily: what’s not to love! The helpful staff at Euston Station guided us towards Oyster cards (to use on the Tube), that proved to be stress free and a great bargain. The sun was shining and we were feeling a chilled out vibe as we headed for Covent Garden and after a long lingering leisurely lunch (a new concept for our editor), we set off to walk towards our hotels. The route took us past Buckingham Palace: we knew the Queen would be at RHS Chelsea the following day. We sauntered along cobbled streets and suddenly, right before us at the edge of Hyde Park, stood the Park Tower Knightsbridge, a Luxury Collection hotel; it’s on a leafy walk-way, and yet this is a hugely popular shopping destination: Harrods is just around the corner. It’s close to the Victoria & Albert Museum, Knightsbridge (underground station) is a two minutes’ walk away, and most importantly, RHS Chelsea Flower Show is just a few stops down the line. 63
Any hotel that boasts a tower is going to look impressive from the outside: once we stepped inside, it’s a revelation. The lobby is described as custom contemporary design, and yet, possibly because of the imposing glittering chandelier and gently curved walls, I was thinking ‘Roaring Twenties’, though to be fair, no-one was swinging from the chandelier. It’s a vast, light, elegant space: the staff were warm and welcoming. It all felt seamless: and the room, which boasted a view of Hyde Park, was spacious: the décor is classic and it’s all about comfort. The bathroom had the wow factor, it’s pale rippled marble: the walk in shower provided immediate warm/hot spray at the push of a button, with Elemis toiletries to hand. The large bath provided another option. It was traumatic saying goodbye to this state of the art bathroom: I slept in total comfort, with a vast duvet as soft as down, wrapped around me. Breakfast in the One-OOne restaurant was superb, sushi was amongst the many options, but I opted for the full English. The staff were friendly, kind and helpful: and fresh pots of coffee were on offer, but I was a garden enthusiast on a mission.
64
HIS&HERS TRAVEL We returned later for afternoon tea in the hotel lounge, served under a canopy of magnolia blossoms, inspired by Royal Hyde Park. It was a dazzling treat, there were fragrant blends of tea by Twinings, pots of coffee, hot chocolate, and there is a tempting champagne option: there were classic smoked salmon and egg sandwiches, with the addition of a lamb and natural yoghurt twist. How to describe what came next: marshmallow, Turkish delight and nougat lollipops, blackbird’s nest chocolate waffles, clementine custard and red currant compote, hand crafted delicacies shaped like swans, gold leaf scattered on chocolate: all totally delicious. We sampled Norwegian red king crab, which is on the menu, alongside wild Cornwall sea bass fillet, cooked in red Burgundy wine, in the renowned One-O-One restaurant.
“It was traumatic saying goodbye to this state of the art bathroom”
65
HIS&HERS TRAVEL Across town, our travels took us to Hotel Indigo, Knightsbridge, where our editor was staying. We have a longstanding appreciation of Hotel Indigo, having proudly featured the group’s Liverpool hotel as an advertiser and longterm editorial favourite for years. Their Knightsbridge hotel certainly didn’t disappoint. Its interior design is crisp, stylish and yet playful and His & Hers’ room was spacious and inviting, featuring a large, incredibly comfortable bed, a generous array of refreshments and a chic bathroom, which was well stocked with Aveda goodies. Having checked in, we dined in style at Theo’s Simple Italian, a beautifully designed restaurant which charmed us with its style, the warmth of its staff and risotto so perfect we were still speaking about it an hour or so after dining. We also spotted Theo’s Simple Italian (which is located in the heart of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea) featured on an episode of Made in Chelsea the following evening, so clearly we’re not alone in appreciating this oh so stylish Italian eatery. We were sad to leave this elegant and welcoming home from home, but Chelsea beckoned, and we couldn’t wait any longer to visit the show.

RHS Chelsea is the best garden show in the world. It grows, it evolves, it takes chances, yet it remains the one and only show in town. This year’s themes were: the Queen’s birthday, ornamental arches, floral tributes, gardens from around the world, and a growth in gardens sponsored by charities. I loved it all: I always do, and yet talking to designers about their show gardens seemed special this year because of the deeper meaning that inspired them. I was taken by Diarmuid Gavin’s, Harrods’ eccentric show garden. It had a Heath Robinson feel to it: terraces and topiary with an octagonal folly and sunken Italian pond. Conical bay trees seem to move by clockwork, and circular beds, overflowing with herbs, dance around the structure: mesmerising.
Kazuyuki, and the ‘Meningitis Now – Futures Garden’ designed by John Everiss was a joy because it represented the spirit and energy of families whose lives have been changed by Meningitis. It’s a Cotswold country garden: dramatic sculptures lead the eye on to a Greek themed folly and the whole represented hope.
“Talking to designers about their show gardens seemed special this year because of the deeper meaning that inspired them”
The Artisan Gardens are always fascinating: the ‘Garage Garden’ housed a ‘mini’ in a lush, Japanese inspired setting, and was designed by Ishihara 68
The Andy Sturgeon, Daily Telegraph show garden was best in show, described as a ‘captured’ landscape, dramatic bronze fins represented an ancient mountain range with a stream of melt water running in the rock strewn gorge. Amongst such creative talent, I discovered Marion Labbez, who gilds and paints on the reverse of glass (mirrors), in silver and gold leaf, and the results took my breath away. Afterwards, I needed to sit quietly in Hyde Park, for ten minutes, contemplating a waterfall, simply to fully appreciate everything I’d seen and experienced at RHS Chelsea.

ARE THESE
Liverpool’s Happiest Chefs? Liverpool restaurant Sapporo Teppanyaki has taken employee perks to a new level, in a bid to ensure their chefs are some of England’s happiest.
F
rom free accommodation in a prime city centre location to tickets to football matches, it’s no wonder chefs at the popular Duke Street restaurant enjoy what Sapporo claims are some of the city’s best benefits. Sapporo’s generous treatment of staff has seen the restaurant establish a turning point in the city’s restaurant scene. It is often given credit for transforming perceptions’ of great quality cuisine, leading Merseyside diners to demand higher quality international food and pay close attention to how their meals are prepared and served - fresh, and of supreme quality. Sapporo’s chefs even make yearly trips to Asia to source the best new ingredients and recipes. Chef Woody told us: “There is nothing ordinary about working at Sapporo. As anyone who has dined at the restaurant will know, there are laughs and a general atmosphere of happiness from starter to dessert and I can honestly say the same goes for all other aspects of working with this amazing team and for a company that truly feels like a family to me. I think this is why so many chefs return to Sapporo there really is no better restaurant to work in.” Chef Kosa, another longterm employee with UK residency, added: “We are constantly growing 70
our skills as chefs and reengineering our menus. Liverpool customers are like no other and they are the people who have lead me to stay in the business for over 10 years.” “The happiness of all our staff, especially our chefs, is always a main priority for Sapporo, especially given the overall nature of the Sapporo experience. How can our guests have a great time if our chefs are not enjoying themselves just as much?” Theo Tsiolas, the restaurant’s operations director said. Indeed the chefs are the stars of Sapporo Teppanyaki, with food cooked in front of guests on a flaming teppanyaki hotplate, always including plenty of theatrical thrills. Sapporo also has some of the most talented sushi chefs in the UK, most of whom have been with Sapporo from the beginning. With its authentic Asian cuisine winning frequent awards, Sapporo’s success continues to grow, with the brand most recently being crowned as Scotland’s Best Asian Restaurant 2016. A feat Sapporo credits to its employee perks and ‘happy chefs’ that maintain Sapporo’s image night after night, week after week.

IL FORNO’S NEW
fresh seafood offering
A
ward-winning Duke street restaurant, Il Forno, is one of the His & Hers team’s favourite Italians. It offers food that never disappoints, in a cheerful, warm and relaxing atmosphere. An invitation to try the brand new Friday menu dedicated to fresh seafood, or Fish Fridays, as the restaurant has dubbed them, sounded compelling, and it didn’t disappoint. We were recommended the Colchester rock oysters to start, served raw on a bed of rock salt. The collection of tastes was impressive; a fresh, lasting tang of the sea, beautifully balanced with a selection of delicious, intense flavours including wasabi and ginger. We were also given helpful wine recommendations, and our Greco di Tufo complemented them perfectly. Mains feature a range of seasonal seafood items, hand picked by head chef Paolo Cillo, including
seafood salads, indulgent Scottish lobster served with fresh pasta and Il Forno’s take on a fish pie. I chose the sea bream, baked in salt to keep it moist and full of flavour. It was skilfully filleted at our table, then served in big flakes that delicately fell apart, accompanied with rich seasonal vegetables; it was a winning flavour combination. What makes Il Forno special is the time spent in selecting the best ingredients. This really did show in our dishes, and the Italian waiters were as thoughtful, passionate and efficient as ever. My dining companion has recently moved to Liverpool from Italy and was utterly impressed by the seafood, so much so that she insisted we returned the following week to try more of the wonderful sounding dishes.

AROUND THE WORLD BAR & LOUNGE’S
NEW MENU LAUNCH This summer, His & Hers was invited to sample highlights of the new menu at Liverpool ONE’s popular Around the World Bar within the Bierkeller.
I
f you’re looking for informal dining (which is perfect while sipping on a jam jar cocktail or two), you’ll find plenty of comfort food classics – from nachos and burgers to a wide selection of pizzas on offer at Around the World. All of the dishes on the new menu are well presented and are served up with menus featuring a broad selection of cocktails, beers and wines. His & Hers was particularly impressed with the mojitos, which look and taste great. Around the World offers a broad mix of drinks and dishes to enjoy together, all of which are very modestly priced. Plus they’re featuring regular seasonal offers on their most popular cocktails and favourites from the food menu, making this a great place to enjoy a completely guilt-free evening which is unlikely to cost much more than staying in (* depending on how many cocktails you order!)

T INSIDER ECH Our Tech Insider Chris Danks explains why the Tesla was the best buy of his life.
W
hile standing by his eye catching Tesla for the His & Hers Magazine photoshoot, Chris Danks fielded comments and questions from passers-by who wanted to take a closer look at the vehicle everyone’s talking about.

Chris said that ever since he took delivery of his Tesla, he’s been getting used to questions and occasionally even people asking if they can pose for a quick picture with the vehicle. It’s certainly a good looking car, but it’s the practical advantages of this electric car which really caught Chris’s attention. “As 99 per cent of charging points are free, I could drive to Rome and it wouldn’t cost me a penny”, said Chris, adding: “I’ve already covered more than 6,000 miles in this car and haven’t had to pay anything for fuel. “Plus every two to three weeks, Tesla give updates for the car, so already it can do more than it could when I bought it in March. If I tap a button twice, the car will start driving itself – it has a 17ins console and everything’s controlled from that screen. Google maps will automatically direct you via a route with chargers and Google calendar reminded me about this interview with His & Hers as soon as I stepped into my car this morning.” Chris added: “It’s nice when you’re parked up at a service station and people get really interested in the car. It gets around 280 miles per fuel charge and has a feature called ‘summon’ – all you have to do is 74
press ‘summon’ and the car will drive itself out of the garage ready for the journey ahead.” He concluded: “It can do so much and is always being updated – it’s like having the ultimate iPhone on wheels and really is the best purchase I’ve ever made in my life.” Chris is the director of Cyber Host Pro and is a regular contributor to His & Hers. www.cyberhostpro.com If reading about his latest tech obsession has left you yearning for a Tesla, here’s Chris’s referral link: http://ts.la/christopher3664
