WELCOME TO THE SPRING EDITION OF HIS & HERS MAGAZINE.
While we’ve been working on this issue, we’ve been savouring the blue skies and the influx of new spring fashion looks, and taking some time to appreciate just how beautiful everything looks when it’s bathed in sunshine.
Emma Hill Editor
One of the indisputable highlights of working on this issue was our shoot day for our main fashion feature (from p8) and our cover. Although the weather didn’t oblige, our fantastic team, including Robin Clewley (photographer) and Jennie Blake (creative director) pulled out all the stops to bring lots of virtual sunshine to the page. I’m also very grateful to the team at Hudson House for providing such a beautiful shoot location and for making the whole team so welcome. If you’re reading the print version of this edition, you may have been lucky enough to spot a Burt’s Bees cleanser or night cream on the cover. And if you’re a long-term reader, you just might remember our previous collaboration with the brand, when they provided free lip-glosses packed with skincare benefits on the cover. As always, it’s been a pleasure working with Burt’s Bees and with their brilliant PR company, Fluorescent. I really do hope you enjoy having a play with your cover gift, or, if you’re reading the digital edition, here’s the web link to check out Burt’s Bees’ latest products (I take full responsibility for any shopping that ensues!) www. burtsbees.co.uk Thanks are also due to Hugo Taylor and Charlie Morris of Taylor Morris for taking time out from building their business empire to give us a fantastic interview, featured on p42 and to Jennie Daniels of Tracey Bell for going above and beyond to give us the inside track on the future of skincare (from p26) We’ll be back in the summer with our new edition. In the meantime, if you’ve enjoyed this issue, please tweet about it: @HisAndHers_Mag #SpringStyle Wishing you a sensational spring / summer 2017!

His & Hers Loves:
Fashion City York As we gear up to get the ultimate style fix at Fashion City York this spring, Leah Harrison interviewed Angela Horner, a member of the FCY steering group to get the inside track on the event.
How did you get involved with Fashion City York? I was on the committee at Browns who joined in with FCY in 2010. Then it fizzled out, as there weren’t any resources or funding to keep it going, which was a shame. Then in 2013 Simon Daubney from City of York Council came to me and said they were trying to get it going again because it had so much potential. We decided it would be worth having another go at it, they asked me to be chairperson and it went from there. Fashion City York heavily collaborates with independent businesses and promotes community involvement. Is this something that’s been particularly important? Definitely! I think if FCY had a mantra it would be the more the merrier, by that I don’t just mean quantity but more variation. The more businesses and people involved the better. We don’t just want it to be about the big shops. It’s lovely this year that we’ve got brands like Oasis, Primark and Topshop involved. But independent shops are important because that’s what makes shopping in York so special.
for me is the Caroline Jones event at The Grand. I love her blog and she’s written a beautiful book. I’m really looking forward to meeting her and hearing more about her story. But really the whole thing this year is exciting. There’s so much happening over these six days. Why do you think it’s so crucial to highlight the fashion and art scene in York, and do you think in the past it may have been overlooked? I think it has, yes, because there hasn’t been a platform for it. Art and Fashion are very intertwined. I think people sometimes think FCY is just about shops; it’s not at all. We’re involving the museums, photography and just a real wide range of people. It’s not exclusive at all, it’s very inclusive. What do you have planned for the future with FCY?
What are you most looking forward to during the Six days of Style event?
Because of what we’ve managed to generate for this year, we’re going to be able to host York Fashion Week next year, which is exciting. It’s something we’ve been working toward for the last three years, so that’s our main focus. It’s amazing how things evolve something amazing could come up that we hadn’t even thought of, you’ve got to keep an open mind.
It’s so hard to say! Probably the most exciting one

Electric celebrates 10 years in the hair and fashion industry As Electric approaches its 10th Birthday, the team behind the brand are eagerly anticipating their next 10 years within the hair and fashion industry. As always, this year sees another change coming into the British trends.
E
lectric Art Director Phill Gallagher from Electric Liverpool has described what he has seen backstage at London Fashion Week this year as being ‘a move in a different direction from what we have experienced over previous seasons’. “We are stepping back from the rough, tousled waves and curls of the previous summers. Hair is becoming much straighter, sleeker, but not polished. There is a real natural element to the hair now with a worn-in texture” he explains. These trends are starting to appear country-wide within our Electric salons. “Men's hair is continuing to grow longer, too, with a real focus on a natural texture. If you combine 70s surfer style with that of a 90s skater, you can envision where fashion is at the moment. To contrast this, the barbering side is still prominent, with a focus on shaved sides”. Phill described the texture as being ‘more beach than bedhead’ and demonstrated that although it looks natural it is actually created through the correct use of hair products and brushing techniques. “You can create this texture at home by using products that do not clump the hair together or make it appear too polished. Steer clear of waxes, creams and putties” Phill advises. “A great tool for this is our Electric eSpray. Spray this from a distance on dry hair whilst moving the hair with your fingers to ensure that the hair is not fixed into a uniform position. Use your fingers to rub small pieces of hair and pull it into place, further fixing this with more eSpray”. To create a great base to work upon, spray Electric’s Prep Spray onto wet hair and blow-dry ahead of using eSpray”. 18

HIS&HERS LUXURY
The Bloomsbury Set Smarter than your average fragrance collection; why The Bloomsbury Set is winning hearts and minds.
I
nspired by the free spirit of The Bloomsbury Set, Jo Malone London’s latest fragrance collection has been inspired by the intoxicating essence of the famous group of intellectuals who lived their lives to the fullest. Just think of the gentle scent of the lily pond at dawn, bold blue hyacinths, blossoming fruit trees, absinthe afternoons and golden linseed on paintstained hands. Or warming whisky and sweet pipe tobacco and the secrets of waxed floors burnished by footsteps in the night; these are the scents of the Bloomsbury Set. “When we visited Charleston, in the middle of the English countryside, I didn’t know what to expect but I fell in love with it. When I was there I made a storyline in my head from morning to afternoon to evening, so the five fragrances have a natural evolution”, said Yann Vasnier, Master Perfumer, adding: “What I particularly loved about The Bloomsbury Set was the juxtaposition of domesticity and simplicity with this hugely intellectual environment.” The Bloomsbury Set launched in March. The RRP for each of the 30ml colognes is: £45. For stockist information, visit: jomalone.co.uk or call: (0)800 054 2411 20
The Bloomsbury Set includes: Blue Hyacinth Intoxicating bold blue hyacinth warmed by the sun entwined with the vibrancy of garden geraniums and woody vetiver.
Tobacco & Mandarin Vibrant mandarin and herbaceous sage sweetened with the warm elegance of beeswax sweet pipe tobacco.
Whisky & Cedarwood An enigmatic blend of fine whisky and opulent roses edged with spicy pimento, warm cedarwood and an intriguing accord of waxy wooden floors.
Leather & Artemisia The striking green facets of anise-tinged absinthe blend with aromatic artemisia, soft orriswood and the deep richness of leather enhanced by the amber woody notes of Cypriol.
Garden Lilies The scent of dawn at the lily pond captured with effervescent water lilies, dewy green sap and lush ylang ylang enhanced with white musk and a wisp of vanilla.

EXTREME SCENT SENSATION Words: Leah Harrison
Perfumer Kilian Hennessy, creator of By Killian unveils his latest, intense fragrance releases.
K
ilian has created, with perfumers Alberto Morillas and Sidonie Lancesseur, more extreme versions of his two iconic fragrances; Good Girl Gone Bad and Straight to Heaven. The scents have been reworked to create new, deeper versions of the original scents. Bottles and boxes are now adorned with black & gold finishes with a new clutch design and a new black lacquered wood coffret with gold details. Good Girl Gone Bad Extreme was created in collaboration with perfumer Alberto Morillas. Alberto describes the notes as “Deep in the rich heart of exquisite flowers” and a “Powerful whirlwind of Jasmine Sambac from India, an Infusion of Egyptian Jasmine, Rose from Turkey, Tuberose from India and the most beautiful orange blossoms from Morocco, wrapped in a delicious milky toffee elixir” Using these ingredients Alberto wanted to “emphasize the intense character of the Good Girl Gone Bad”. The second of the new fragrances, Straight to Heaven Extreme, was created with Perfumer Sidonie Lancesseur and offers a more seductive version of the original by overdosing on the Rum and the Vanilla. “Straight to Heaven Extreme envelops you in a fabulously intoxicating overdose of decadent Rum from Martinique absolute. This quintessentially sensual, exciting fragrance takes addiction to a whole new level. The woody amber trail of this distinctive perfume is uplifted by a Vanilla absolute from Madagascar that incites passion and stirs excitement.” Sidonie Lancesseur. The final new release from Kilian, which was inspired by pirates, is Black Phantom – Memento Mori. “Black Phantom Momento Mori is filled with notes of “aromatic bitter coffee” and “intoxicatingly sweet rum”. Kilian descries the scent as “supremely sophisticated” and “darkly fragrant”. Working again with Sidonie Lancesseur, he sought to create an Irish coffee twist by replacing the traditional whiskey with the liquor of pirate’s rum. The perfume is set to release mid-April.

Next Generation Beauty Treatments at Tracey Bell
This spring, His & Hers caught up with Jennie Daniels, a senior laser aesthetician at Tracey Bell, to find out what her job entails and to get the inside track on the must-have laser treatments for 2017. 26
HIS&HERS BEAUTY
J
ennie met His & Hers at the Liverpool Tracey Bell clinic, greeting us with a warm smile. She has a friendly, calming presence, which makes her a firm favourite with her clients, and she clearly has no preconceptions about who’s likely to walk walk through the door requesting a laser treatment. “I see everyone – from people in their early 20s to clients in their 80s” she declared. Jennie explained that they’re getting a lot of demand for IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) treatments, adding: “You can come here just for a relaxing facial, but generally we find that people want a bit more than that. IPL, for example, treats issues like sun damage, pigmentation and age spots and can remove those sun damaged cells. It treats anything with skin pigmentation, like spider veins, and can remove the imperfections of age.” Jennie said that laser hair removal was another very popular treatment, adding: “We also offer painless hair removal, which is particularly popular with younger patients. It’s an inexpensive treatment, with prices starting from £45 for a session, and it’s very effective.” She added: “We also offer a lot of skin tightening treatments. Ultherapy is a one-off treatment with results that last for up to two years. It’s a non-surgical way to lift, tighten and tone the skin and is a real up and coming treatment – the real alternative to going under the knife.” Jennie explained: “I’ve been working here for seven years and I’ve learnt so much in that time. I’ve worked for other laser specialists in the past, but Tracey is so passionate about learning about the latest technologies, so you gain much more knowledge here.” She added: “We were one of the first companies to offer Coolsculpting, which launched in the UK in 2010, and now it’s one of our bestselling body treatments. It’s a fantastic treatment that delivers fat reduction and is perfect for people who have certain stubborn areas of fat on the body that just won’t seem to shift no matter what they do with diet and exercise. This is a unisex treatment, which is really popular with both genders.” Jennie added: “I think people are really surprised by how much we can do with non-surgical treatments, without necessarily spending a lot of time or money, these days. We can really tackle almost every concern – from unwanted hair, to sun damage, skin ageing, loss of tone or tightness or even the development of a bit of a double chin or jowls as we get older, or just book you in for a great facial. There really is something for everyone.” Jennie is an NVQ 3 and 4 level therapist. She has completed a number of laser courses in the UK and is trained in all aspects of laser therapy. Jennie has also completed a BTEC in Laser Therapy and is a highly regarded and popular member of the Tracey Bell team. She is perhaps best known by clients for providing highly popular treatments like Coolsculpting, IPL and Ultherapy.

Liverpool’s first ever temporary pop-up dance venue opens for LEAP dance festival 2017
Downtown toasts their latest ‘Big Black Book’ at Neighbourhood
This spring, MDI (Merseyside Dance Initiative) launched Liverpool’s first ever pop-up dance house at MAKE.Warehouse in the creative north docks area of the city, to house LEAP dance festival.
When you’ve just published a rather stylish new business bible, featuring the businesspeople making waves in the north west, it makes sense to invite them all to enjoy a glass of champagne (or several) while leafing through a copy.
Part of MDI’s mission to inspire more people to dance and to bring new dance to new spaces, the pop-up dance house features dance workshops, a bespoke sprung stage, and other fun, interactive elements, as well as the venue for LEAP 2017.

Stars come out in force to celebrate Liverpool fashion brand Designer Jessica O’Shea attracted the North West’s fashion lovers, who turned out in force to support the launch of her latest fashion collection at Allerton Manor. Food and fashion mixed to create a perfect afternoon at the She Shea Ladies Lunch held at the prestigious Old Stable Restaurant, at Allerton Manor Golf Club. The lunch, attended by more than a hundred fans of the 29-year-old from Woolton, was held to unveil highlights from Jessica’s new spring/summer 2017 designs for her exclusive She Shea label. Guests sat down to an A La Carte lunch in the club’s Old Stables restaurant before being served fashion shows between each course. The light and airy dining space was the perfect backdrop to showcase the glamorous designs and the ladies enjoyed delicious dishes, cocktails and plenty of champagne. Set in a leafy suburban oasis, just 15 minutes from Liverpool city centre, the rural charm of The Old Stables, Allerton, provided a stylish location for Liverpool’s fashion lovers to gather.

ROBYN MCGLINCHEY shares her tips for tackling stress
O
ver recent months my body has increasingly shown signs of being stressed. It’s a blessing that I work in an environment that encourages, helps and restores the body and helps it to stave off disease as I have the self-help tools readily available. But, I remember how challenging it was to deal with stress when I had to seek help to overcome it. So what exactly do I mean by stress? Our bodies do not distinguish between a divorce and a traffic jam, they react in the same way. The difference is the length of time our bodies are put under the “fight or flight” response to stress and the compounding effects these things have. Sadly, there is a very long list of issues associated with stress, but I will highlight a few specific things that we deal with daily which we may not associate with being stressed. We may not even realise we are stressed until we take a minute to understand and feel how our body is reacting. Tension We start every Pilates class by relaxing our shoulders, breathing and realigning our spines. Stress causes the body to tense muscles and long periods of muscle contractions can cause discomfort and even pain. Tightness in the muscles around the shoulders, 36
for example, can contribute to poor posture, exaggerating the tension and even cause headaches and migraines. Belly bulge Stress has plenty to answer for when it comes to our midriff. When the body is preparing for “fight or flight” it triggers the release of, among other hormones, cortisol which causes increased blood glucose. This is ideal to boost energy to deal with an impending threat but over a sustained period of time, it creates a constant message to refuel those lost calories (which weren’t necessarily used) and so we reach for sugary, fatty food. One thing leads to the next and we find ourselves in a pattern of overeating. Exercise is an ideal way to burn up the extra blood glucose. Pilates specifically targets the muscles around the mid-section of the body, firing up the abdominal muscles and helping to keep the bulge at bay. Find me in the next issue where I will discuss more about the impact of stress on the body and how Pilates can help.

HIS&HERS FOOD & DRINK
My Culinary Inspirations by Lee Steeton from Neighbourhood
Lee Steeton, Executive chef at East Coast Concepts Ltd, shares his stories, from reflecting on his time at The Savoy to revealing where he finds his cooking inspiration to create delicious dishes.
Words: Leah Harrison
How did you find your passion for food? When I was young, I was always getting in trouble so our neighbour went out of her way to get me my first job at The Crown Inn, Somerset. The Head Chef there worked me hard and gave me a lot of direction and discipline. I enjoyed the stress and pressure that came with working in a kitchen and started cooking at home, I remember at 13 attempting to cook my first Whelk (a type of sea snail), it was horrible and tough. After that I did some research to learn the correct way to cook it; funnily enough, Whelks were one of the first things I had to cook at The Savoy – thankfully I knew how to cook them properly by then! What’s the best thing about your job? I’d say the best part of it is the friendships you make along the way - they’re for life and there aren’t many jobs you can say that in. Another thing I love about the job is the customers. I have met and cooked for a lot of famous people through the years, the fact they love what we cook for them and the way they treat us like rockstars still amazes me. How do you get to be creative in the kitchen? Creativity is a constant thing for me. Sometimes when I’m talking to suppliers they inspire me with new ingredients, which I then go on to mix with other ingredients to create a dish. Talking to other 40
chefs, reading books, day dreaming on the train, ideas come to me sporadically. Creativity is a lot more dynamic now, everyone wants something new, so chefs’ brains are always buzzing with new ideas… I think that’s why we’re all a little mad! Why did you decide to make the move to Neighbourhood? My new role as Executive Chef both of our Neighbourhoods in Liverpool, Manchester and Victors in Hale means I spend time in each kitchen. The reason for the move over to East Coast Concepts was that I met the owner, James Hitchen. I really liked him, his ethos and what he wants to achieve. The food scene in Liverpool is really starting to take shape and the city is beautiful. What would you recommend to anyone dining at Neighbourhood? Neighbourhood is a unique dining experience. There is an extremely wide range of food from Tacos through to steaks and sushi. One of the reasons why I love Neighbourhood is that you have great food and wine, in a beautiful, relaxing environment. At weekends, from 11pm, the bongos and drums come out to play, the party starts and the atmosphere is electric.

Ones to Watch:
Taylor Morris Fusing cutting edge contemporary design with old-fashioned craftsmanship and style, Taylor Morris is the new(ish) brand shaking up the luxury sunglasses market. WORDS: Emma Hill
W
hen His & Hers first interviewed Hugo Taylor and Charlie Morris, the founders of Taylor Morris, at the Harvey Nichols Beauty Bazaar back in 2013, the pair had a small but perfectly formed sunglasses collection, a business partnership built out of a longstanding friendship, and big ambitions for their fledgling brand. Their shared attention to detail and their willingness to put in the hours and build their brand organically stood out upon first meeting, and upon rejoining the entrepreneurs during their return visit to the Beauty Bazaar, it was immediately apparent that all their hard work had paid off. Their new Atlas Collection, which is exclusive to Harvey Nichols, features shades with the kind of instantly recognisable, iconic design flourishes that gives Taylor Morris credibility with the likes of Sienna Miller, Kourtney Kardashian and the Delevigne 42
sisters but also the tiny, subtle signs of craftsmanship that means that the stars of today just might want to pass these beauties on to their descendants in the decades to come. Hugo (who readers may recognise from his time on Made in Chelsea, one of E4’s most popular shows, featuring SW3’s most fashionable inhabitants) confesses that if it looks like an awful lot of work’s gone into the pair’s new collection, it’s probably because it has, admitting: “We’ve had plenty of nonstop 12-hour days.” Thanks to all those long hours spent creating and promoting their sunglasses collection, Charlie and Hugo have seen their brand take off not just in the UK, but overseas as well, and were preparing to head off to Dubai following our interview. It’s an impressive trajectory for an independent business, but it’s clear that the pair are not chasing growth at any cost. It was apparent during our interview that
HIS&HERS FASHION the friends had a natural camaraderie with the Harvey Nichols team who were helping with their meetings at the store. In fact, the Harvey Nichols team has been so supportive that they now have an exclusivity deal with Taylor Morris for many new collections and launches. This kind of loyalty and collaboration seems to be one of the keys to the brand’s success.
“When we spot someone walking down the road wearing our sunglasses, that’s the best feeling.”
The friends are also big supporters of other independent businesses, pausing mid-interview to tell His & Hers about an inspiring fledgling leather jacket business they’d been finding out about recently. Then, when we presented a gift from the magazine of a pendant for Charlie and a silver wrist band for Hugo from Carter Gore, a new independent British brand that we’re a tad obsessed with, their interest in hearing more about this fellow independent was evident. It’s refreshing to see two entrepreneurs who want to know all about others in the accessories market, not to compete, but to encourage. With a thriving international business which is fast becoming recognised as a global brand, His & Hers asked the business partners what excited them most about their business and almost simulataneously, they declared: “When we spot someone walking down the road wearing our sunglasses, that’s the best feeling.” So, whether it’s the satisfaction of spotting a stranger wearing your shades or the pleasure derived from spotting the tiny design details near the hinge of your Taylor Morris sunglasses, it seems that it really is all about the little things! Prices start at £130 up to £240 and Taylor Morris sunglasses are available from www.taylor-morris. com as well as from Harvey Nichols nationwide.

HIS&HERS WELLNESS
New Wellness Options As we prepare for summer, His & Hers has been investigating some of the new businesses springing up to promote wellness in the North West. From LIV, Bold Street’s new organic food market, to Akea Life, which offers patients the chance to get proactive about their health to Nourish, the gym, spa and yoga studio helping women to get fit and stay that way, there are plenty of options available for those who want to make some tweaks to their lifestyle to feel healthier. Akea Life Akea Life offers people the opportunity to get a full health check at a convenient time. They offer medical advice as and when you need it and once you've had an in-depth health check with them, you'll have all the information you need to see where you might be able to benefit from making a few changes – from improving your diet to getting a bit more active. His & Hers will be road-testing an Akea Life plan with this innovative new healthcare provider and sharing our diary to reveal just what we learnt from the experience and how we were able to put this information to use.
Nourish In addition to offering a gym, spa, yoga and dance studio and plenty of pampering treatments, the Nourish team can also provide you with a tailored nutrition plan and advise you on the kinds of classes or personal training sessions that will help you hit your fitness goals. Nourish has a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere, which is ideal for those of us who aren’t natural ‘gym bunnies’ and feel a little self-conscious about joining new fitness classes. His & Hers is particularly smitten with their relaxing yoga classes.

Hudson House launches in style Earlier in the season, Hudson House, a new Liverpool seafood restaurant with an impressive bar area and outdoor space, opened its doors to the public for the first time.
T
he Hudson House team threw a stylish launch party, treating guests to champagne, their signature cocktails and freshly prepared canapĂŠs from their kitchens.
His & Hers was particularly impressed by the classically contemporary interior design scheme and the friendliness of the entire team and we loved the theatre of watching cocktails being crafted with love at the bar. Hudson House is one of a relatively small number of Liverpool restaurants to offer a spacious outdoor seating area and provides the perfect destination for tucking into fresh seafood in the summer months. We were so impressed with the location that we couldn't resist returning to shoot our main fashion story and cover image here (see the results from p8). We'll also be joining forces with Hudson House to feature a competition on our website over the coming weeks, so keep an eye on: www.hisandhersmag.co.uk for your chance to enter.

HIS&HERS TRAVEL
Coastal Living at MarBella Corfu WORDS: Emma Hill
S
ometimes busy periods during which you dash from one meeting to the next while being bullied by the British climate leave you dreaming of a simple beach holiday where deadlines and pressure fade from your mind as you shield your eyes from the sun and summon up the energy to order another mojito. However, when it comes to finding that perfect cove in which to relax and unwind, not all beaches were created equal! Unless you’re happy to fight for sun lounger space, you’re probably looking for somewhere away from the crowds, but not so far that there’s no prospect of finding a bar. MarBella Corfu strikes the perfect balance, occupying its own stretch of beach on this beautiful Greek island, you can easily find a secluded spot to take in the views of the ocean and olive groves, but take a short stroll back to the hotel and you’ll find a very tempting array of restaurants, cocktails worth savouring as you watch the sun set, and a spa. His & Hers was blown away by the beautiful ocean views from our room. Lots of thought has been given to the interior and exterior design of the hotel and it shows, meaning that your strolls around the grounds may well take longer than planned as you find yourself pausing to take pictures every few minutes. I’d highly recommend dining al fresco at Bussola Restaurant – the food is excellent and with very little light pollution to be found in this part of Corfu, you can see the stars twinkling brightly above you as you eat. This is a versatile resort, catering for people seeking a little time alone to recharge, couples, families, and those making the most of their retirement with a sophisticated sunshine break. 53
Highlights for His & Hers included the excellent food on offer at the hotel (even if you fall in love with the first of MarBella Corfu’s restaurants that you try, we really would recommend mixing things up and trying another, as they feature such a tempting array of European and traditional Greek dishes and each have a different atmosphere. The staff are friendly and helpful and the waiters are so enthusiastic about the food and drink that they serve that we were tempted to blame them for the fact that we ate and drank rather more than we’d planned to during our trip (and enjoyed every moment of our feasting!) The views are stunning and as the area has not been over-developed, you just might find yourself with the beach to yourself as you take a relaxing evening stroll. If you haven’t already spent time in Corfu, we’d say it’s well worth a visit to soak up beautiful blue skies, ocean views and the warmest of welcomes at MarBella Corfu. And even if you aren’t someone who tends to enjoy beach holidays, we think that this one just might change your mind. If it’s sunshine, relaxation, views to remember, luxury accommodation and unusually good food and drink that you crave, add MarBella Corfu to your travel wish-list this spring.

to silently drift past. We took a tour of the Production Kitchen. There were revelations along the way. Over 220 chefs cater for Liverpool supporters on a match day. Chris Marshall, explained that two chefs have taken over responsibility for a vast allotment space that will provide fruit and vegetables in season for all home matches, events and occasions. It’s a space that is both practical and inspiring. There will be a scheme to involve the local community, with schoolchildren’s visits where they can try fruit picking or digging up spuds, and possibly sample the produce. It is a holistic vision, and a powerful one. Anyone who has tasted potatoes, just harvested, knows the value of truly fresh produce. There is scope for hospitality on many different levels, literally. Aside from the wide variety of food available on match days, these spaces are perfect for a conference, and could host many glittering events. There is capacity for hundreds to enjoy prestigious occasions in elegant surroundings and then sample fine cuisine. The proof of the pudding…we settled in an executive box where we were treated to a tasting menu: beautifully presented scallops, sea bass simply and perfectly cooked. The pork, pan fried, flavoured with star anise and cinnamon, was stand-out for me. Dessert combined strawberry and chocolate flavours that were melt in the mouth beautiful . The wine, white, rosé, and red, perfectly complemented each course. The menu in hospitality changes each week, and is not repeated, which must involve a great deal of research, creativity and sheer talent. The company was sparkling, and chatting to Ian Rush, I remembered Robbie Fowler and Kenny Dalgleish, and discovered that Suarez was, aside from being a world class striker, a great mentor of younger players.
A Stand-Up Afternoon at Anfield: Liverpool Football Club
I
t’s my birthday, and His & Hers has an invite to go to Anfield, and meet Ian Rush and Gary McAllister, both of whom are ambassadors for the club, enjoy a tasting menu in an executive box and meet Chris Marshall, Executive Head Chef at Liverpool F C. The new Main Stand is awesome as it stretches upwards. It’s a work-out to reach the giddy heights (at least five or six flights up), though there is a lift if this seems too daunting. The view is worth the climb. It’s a panoramic view of Liverpool, and as you slowly spin around you can take in Goodison Park, the two cathedrals in all their splendour, and enjoy the view right down to the docks and the river. The sheer scale of the hospitality is hard to take in. We moved down a level and stepped out to view the pitch. It’s always the same, that buzz of excitement, usually just before a game, but today it’s simply the sight of the green turf, that magic place where Ian Rush and Gary McAllister, once played their hearts out. The different levels of hospitality have names such as: the Beautiful Game, the Carlsberg Dugout, my favourite, where there are state of the art ‘street vendors’, offering such delights as home-made pies, and prawn curry. We moved across the Fan Concourse, and a shadow army of supporters seemed 56
This is the stuff that dreams are made of: state of the art surroundings, legends of the past, mingling with legends in the making, the thrill of match day, or a special event, and truly fine dining. It is the new face of football: back in the day, when my brother used to take me to the Kop, when someone scored everyone tumbled forwards, and a huge roar went up around the Stadium. At half time, the brave few, because it was daunting to fight your way through the crowd, would set off in search of a pork pie. Nothing much has changed there then.

CLOCKWORKS: AN ALL DAY DINING HAVEN Located in Wolstenholme Square - currently undergoing a huge regeneration recently opened Clockworks is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered.
WORDS: Jennie Blake
T
he 200-year-old building that now houses Clockworks has been transformed from a forgotten textile factory into a warm and relaxing all day eatery and cocktail bar. The venue has been modelled taking inspiration from the building’s history and era of industrial revolution, with the tasteful, inventive interiors evoking thoughts of steampunk. It provides the ideal setting for a cup of delicious coffee, breakfast, hearty lunch, three-course dinner or expertly mixed cocktails every day of the week. Clockworks boasts a menu full of delights. At its heart are tasty British classics and comfort food, but with a deft attention to detail and unique twists that please both the non-adventurous and aspiring pioneers alike. Some tempting plates included Coca Cola slow cooked belly pork with braised red cabbage and mustard mash, or slow roasted pulled beef brisket scouse with pickled beetroot and spicy sweet potato. Then we saw the pies. Comforting, homely and just what we wanted on a blustery day. The very best,
58
perfectly cooked, rich, delicious British steak and craft ale pie arrived, with sides of mushy peas and creamy mashed potato. Our cravings were truly satisfied. Amid the open brick space we were also poring over the options for breakfast (served until 2pm for the late risers). They sounded so compelling we returned the following Saturday for the ultimate recovery breakfast, coupling the ‘carnivore’ with a truly aweinspiring Bloody Mary. This leads us onto the cocktails; a delightful combination of creations and classics. These reflect the Clockworks mantra- tasty, refined and served with love but no pretence; a real addition to any dish or night out. Clockworks has only been open for a few months, but it’s already been attracting bags of attention. With the little things done well and quality at the right price, we predict it’s going to take Liverpool by storm.

Discover something new at the Old Stables This spring, His & Hers Magazine took a short drive to leafy Allerton and indulged in a delicious dinner at The Old Stables Restaurant.
T
he restaurant is located within Allerton Manor Golf Course and for city dwellers, the views of trees aplenty and pristine lawns are ever so easy on the eye.
Just like the grounds that surround it, the Old Stables Restaurant looks immaculately maintained and has a lovely outdoor space for dining or sipping on a cocktail or two. This outdoor area was already proving popular during our visit in early spring, attracting relaxed and friendly fellow diners. Very welcoming staff and the gentle hum of conversation from contented fellow diners makes for a pleasant, relaxing atmosphere, and His & Hers enjoyed sitting by the window where we could make the most of the views. Whether it’s comfort food you’re seeking or something a little fancier than you could rustle up in your own kitchen, the Old Stables delivers in spades. We were so impressed with the homemade soup, salad and risotto that we demolished rather more than we’d intended to (always a sign of a great dinner!) We’d recommend the Old Stables for a romantic dinner for two, or a catch-up over food and wine with good friends. There really is something special about the atmosphere here and as we all start savouring those longer, warmer evenings, it’ll be the perfect spot to enjoy your food as the sun sets. Just save a table with a view for His & Hers, please!

West Kirby’s foodie renaissance gathers pace The fortunes of West Kirby’s foodie renaissance will be demonstrated at a showcase for guests on April 13th when, as a catalyst for the area, West 34 launches its new seafood menu.

he destination restaurant and bar's ambience, style, design and eclectic menuswith a twist have been compared to the vibrant and seemingly forever burgeoning scene in Liverpool. As manager Stuart Snowden explained: “West Kirby is re-emerging as the go-to eating place on the Wirral. When we opened, many of our loyal guests made the comparison between us in terms of design and offer with Soho House in London. Our emphasis is very much on great food – classic and new seafood dishes from around the world – all with a twist.” Simon Rimmer equally saw an opportunity last year opening the Viking in the locality and commentators are now talking of West Kirby as being one the best kept secrets in the North West in terms of wining, 62
dining and entertainment. Stuart continued: “We're expecting an impressive list of loyal guests, celebrities, media and businesses drawn from the wider region at our event. It will be a good opportunity for us to highlight one of the most comprehensive wine lists on Wirral and Merseyside too. “We'll also be showcasing the further and substantial investment made both from an interior design point of view and the outside seating area for guests so they can enjoy a unique al fresco experience.”
