This season has been a significant one for His & Hers. Firstly we toasted our 30th anniversary edition. Then we set down our cocktail glasses and got to work on our new website: www.hisandhersmag.co.uk You’ll find our behind-the-scenes videos, celebrity interviews, competitions and exclusive features on the new site. Other highlights of our summer have included hosting a very special reader evening at Cadenzza (featured from p32), covering the Chelsea Flower Show (p44), and joining the Jo Malone London team for their latest launches (p8). We’re also rather proud to be featuring Poppy Delevigne, Johnny Depp, Paris Hilton and long-standing His & Hers Magazine columnist Marco Pierre White in this edition. We’re continuing to roll out our distribution – you’ll now find copies of His & Hers in every room at the Titanic Hotel. We’re also proud to work with Malmaison, Hotel Indigo, the Richmond and the Suites Hotel. We’re also looking forward to supplying copies to the recently opened Old Blind School. This lovingly renovated bar and restaurant has rapidly established itself as a key venue and we thoroughly enjoyed interviewing the gregarious owners (featured from p56). As ever, a huge thank you is due to everyone who contributes to, stocks and reads His & Hers (and if you do all three, I clearly owe you a drink!) Also, I’m enormously grateful to everyone who supports this magazine through advertising. You may have spotted that we’ve added more pages, something that would not have been possible without the support of so many brilliant businesses. We’ll be back this winter with another extended edition featuring our latest Next fashion shoot, plus a lively mix of entertainment news, celebrity interviews, travel inspiration, style and beauty pages. Until then, if you’ve enjoyed this issue, please take a moment to tweet: @HisAndHers_Mag #AutumnStyle and look out for the winter edition.

A JO MALONE LONDON
THIS SUMMER HAS BEEN A SIGNIFICANT ONE FOR JO MALONE LONDON, WITH POPPY DELEVIGNE BECOMING THE FACE OF THE BRAND, A RATHER SPECIAL FRAGRANCE LAUNCH AND, OF COURSE, CHRISTMAS IN JULY. HIS & HERS HAS TRIED NOT TO MISS A MOMENT OF IT. WORDS: Emma Hill
Earlier this summer, the His & Hers team were amongst the first to be told that Poppy Delevigne would be the first Jo Malone London girl. With her serious style credentials, it was felt that the model, designer and fashion ambassador was the quintessential Jo Malone London girl.
“I’ve been wearing Red Roses since I was 22. The first thing that drew me to my husband James was his scent, and when I asked him what it was, he said, Amber & Lavender. My home is overflowing with Jo Malone London candles and I scented my wedding with Orange Blossom, which still gives me butterflies. Jo Malone London is woven into the fabric of my life and I couldn’t be happier to be working with a brand I love so much,” says Jo Malone London Girl, Poppy Delevingne.
9
HIS&HERS LUXURY To begin with Poppy will curate and host a series of special events – both grand and cosy – and will actively share the brand with her friends. “Poppy is such a dedicated, vivacious character, with huge international appeal. As a long time Jo Malone London devotee, and true English rose, this feels like an incredibly natural appointment. Poppy’s personality is infectious, she is a joy to be around and brings a sense of celebration to everything she does,” says Global General Manager, Jean-Guillaume Trottier. Following Poppy’s announcement, we received an invitation to witness the unveiling of Jo Malone London’s new scent, Mimosa & Cardamom, at the brand’s London townhouse. To reflect the fragrance’s ‘new bohemia’ theme, the townhouse had been given a Moroccan style makeover. It was a very stylish launch event, attracting a host of leading beauty journalists and editors. However, it’s a fragrance so good that it really doesn’t require any showmanship. We weren’t sure what to expect from a scent which we were told featured mists of honeyed, golden mimosa, spicy freshly crushed cardamom, creamy tonka and smooth sandalwood woven under powdery heliotrope and Damask roses picked at dawn. It sounded initially like an exotic fragrance for occasional wear. However, it really was love at first scent. Mimosa & Cardamom is a testament to the skills of Master Perfumer Marie Salamagne (who also created: Incense & Cedrat, Silk Blossom and Tuberose Angelica). This fragrance (which is available from September 2015) is soft, subtle, layered and ever so easy to wear. It’s also a scent which you really couldn’t confuse with any other fragrance, and one which will linger in your memory. It’s not just His & Hers Magazine’s fragrance of the summer, it’s one of our all time favourite scents, right up there with Jo Malone London’s iconic Pomegranate Noir and Lime Basil & Mandarin. If you only try one new scent this season we really would recommend making it this one.
10
HIS&HERS LUXURY After the excitement of the announcement of Poppy Delevigne’s new role and Mimosa & Cardamom’s lavish launch, we just couldn’t resist paying one more summer visit to Jo Malone London’s townhouse for ‘Christmas in July’, the brand’s Christmas press day. Opulent, elegant and with a 1950s theme, the press day provided the inspiration for our ultimate Christmas wish-list. You’ll have to wait for the next issue to read all about this one, but in the meantime, we really would recommend taking the time to discover Mimosa & Cardamom, a fragrance for life, not just for Christmas!
MIMOSA & CARDAMOM COLOGNE 30ml, £42; COLOGNE 100ml, £85; BODY & HAND WASH 250ml, £28; BODY CRÈME 175ml, £50; HOME CANDLE 200g, £42.

JOHNNY DEPP
IS ANNOUNCED AS THE NEW FACE OF CHRISTIAN DIOR PARFUMS FEATURE: Jennie Blake
F
or Dior, and for the first time ever, Johnny Depp has agreed to be the face of a brand-new men’s fragrance. This is a major first for the unique artist and for the House of Dior, as it unveils its new fragrance composed by François Demachy. Johnny Depp is known for a full range of impressive talents. With his gift for music and acting, he has had the opportunity to join many of his musician friends onstage as well as collaborate with such directors as Jim Jarmusch, Emir Kusturica, Lasse Hallström, Oliver Stone, Terry Gilliam and Julian Schnabel, among many others, producing unforgettable moments in films. From “Cry-Baby” with John Waters to Tim Burton’s “Edward Scissorhands” to “Pirates of the Caribbean” with Gore Verbinski, his career is a testament to the eclectic spirit of a true artist who fully inhabits his roles. He was recently part of an amazing ensemble cast in Rob Marshall’s “Into the Woods” and will next be seen starring in Scott Cooper’s “Black Mass”, slated for release this coming September. We certainly approve. Do you? Picture: Nathaniel Goldberg

BEAUTY OBSESSIONS:

DIOR’S COSMOPOLITE COLLECTION PETER PHILIPS, CREATIVE AND IMAGE DIRECTOR FOR DIOR, HAS CREATED HIS FIRST COLOUR COLLECTION, HIS & HERS MAGAZINE’S NEW BEAUTY OBSESSION.
2
3
Dior Addict Fluid Shadow For the first time, the Dior laboratories have managed to capture a unique mirror effect with magnetic shimmer in a hybrid ‘eye varnish.’ “It’s an incredible innovation for the eyes,” explains Peter Philips enthusiastically. “With a single brush stroke, Dior Addict Fluid Shadow gives eyelids the lacquer-like shine of a screen of light.” 1
4
2 5 Couleurs Another creation of Peter Philips, the turbulent lettering of the 5 Couleurs palette reflects the playful chic of the New Look and the elusive beauty of the Dior woman. The two new limited-edition palettes flatter all types of beauty.
Diorblush Cheek Stick Like many of the products in the collection, Diorblush Cheek Stick delivers personalised results as it can be used to delicately highlight the cheekbones or to create a stunning sculpting effect. “I like to blend Diorblush Cheek Stick in small touches with the fingertips,” says Peter Philips. “But regardless of the intensity, its three shades – rosewood, fresh pink and apricot orange – colour the cheeks with a flattering velvety finish.” 3
4 Diorskin Nude Cosmopolite The typography is transformed, as though embossed on the surface of Diorskin Nude Cosmopolite, a face powder with a glowy finish that is luminous without shine. A single shade in a universal formula, for a custom result.
Dior Vernis Make an elegant and clear statement; take a stand by always celebrating beauty. With its strong and ever-sophisticated shades for fall, Dior Vernis makes a “playful and chic statement,” in the words of Peter Philips. 5
6 Rouge Dior and Dior Addict Fluid Stick Four shades that caress the lips, from frosty beige to rosewood, from the most feminine red to a mocha brown. The Rouge Dior fall palette fulfils this same desire for a couture signature that retains a contemporary and decidedly urban spirit.

atering to clients who like to look their best whatever the occasion, the friendly and highly trained Uptown Funk team offer the very latest in couture and celebrity-inspired looks for perfect hair, makeup, brows and nails. One of the Uptown Funk founders, Julie Goodwin, told His & Hers: “We’ve been overwhelmed by the level of demand for appointments at Uptown Funk. We’ve been so busy ever since we opened our doors and can’t wait to bring the concept to Liverpool.” Julie added: “We can’t reveal too many details yet, but we’ve found the perfect city centre location for Uptown Funk and are very excited about having two blowdry and makeup bars in the North West very soon.” Julie’s daughters, Amy and Jourdane, are the co-founders of the flourishing business and told His & Hers: “Uptown Funk started with our enthusiasm for the business, and one central theme emerged. We have found getting ready for any occasion is just as much fun often as the occasion itself, so we wanted to bring that ‘getting ready’ element to our clients. However, at Uptown Funk, we do all the work, so our clients can have all the fun! We want to make the experience an affordable luxury, too, making it really accessible.” The Uptown Funk team will be revealing the details of their new Liverpool location over the coming weeks.

TRACEY BELL’S POTENTIAL TIPS TO UNLOCK YOUR
Entrepreneur Tracey Bell has five dental and aesthetic clinics and her own skincare line. This summer she took a short break from her hectic schedule to share her secrets for success with His & Hers.
I
n her youth, Tracey Bell funded her studies for her degree in Dentistry by working as a taxi driver. Fast forward a decade or so and Tracey has established a reputation as a leading dentist with five thriving clinics and her own skincare line. With an established business, many entrepreneurs might be tempted to finally take a hard-earned break. However, Tracey has never lost her craving for knowledge and formidable work ethic. Therefore, rather than slowing down, she’s continued to build her business while studying for a PgCert in Dental Law and Ethics at Bedfordshire, graduating this summer.
TRACEY BELL’S TOP TIPS: 1. If it doesn’t challenge you it won’t change you. Don’t be too scared to take on projects or responsibilities that stretch you – this is when you’ll learn the most.
4. Life is short and always there for the taking. Keep taking those small steps every day to create the life you want.
2. Stay curious and never stop learning. I’ve just completed my PgCert in Dental Law and Ethics and am embarking on a Masters Degree. As a dentist, it’s really important to me that I’m always learning.
5. Take the time to say thank you – to colleagues, clients, friends, family and your partner. It’ll make you feel better when you remember all the things you have to be grateful for and it’ll keep the people around you smiling, too.
3. Surround yourself with good people. I’m fortunate enough to have a fantastic team, partner and family who support me every step of the way. Having the right team in your corner will help you go further!
Tracey will continue her education with her studies for her Masters Degree this year. She has clinics in Liverpool, Birkdale and the Isle of Man.

MATT & JAYNE’S MUST-HAVES JAYNE’S OBSESSIONS: What’s Hot Blonde, blonde and more blonde! If you’re doing it already, you need to make sure you’re in one of two camps – in the first camp, golden and caramel tones keep the wearable edge to your hair, warming your look up and keeping it current.
Jayne Mahon
Camp number two is bold but with the palest of palettes; it can be tweaked with a creative eye in your salon to take on an easily achieved change of tone. Ask your stylist for advice on how to attain these must-have locks.
My Images With a couple of shoots under my belt so far, this year has been a pretty busy one; in the latest one I had the luxury of doing it all for myself. Under the watchful eye of Mr Andrew Collinge, off I went into faze one of planning. On the make-up front, with a clear idea of what I wanted to achieve, I could only turn to my partner in crime, Liz Collinge, who was on hand to share her knowledge of all things make-up. Clothes were provided by the amazing, talented team at Philp Armstrong; it was every girl’s dream being able to pick what I wanted to suit the theme for my shoot. Those boys certainly know what works for us ladies... Oh and now gents, too! I wanted to create a collection that women could relate to and it was a lovely project to work on.

HUSBAND AND WIFE TEAM TV PRESENTER MATT LITTLER AND ANDREW COLLINGE ART DIRECTOR JAYNE MAHON SHARE THEIR AUTUMN OBSESSIONS. MATT’S OBSESSIONS: Late summer read: The Truth about the Harry Quebert Affair If you’re after a book for the plane, the beach or for bedtime, I can heartily recommend this one by Joel Dicker. Set in a quiet American backwater and laden with more twists than is usually allowed without a book resorting to cheap tricks, this whodunit will keep you guessing until the very last pages. Read it now before someone snaps up the film rights and you can boast to your mates that you’re ‘well ahead of the media’.

Charging solution - Native Union - Jump Anyone stuck on one of those annoying 18 month phone contracts will still be rocking an iPhone 5s, which probably means that you suffer from ‘battery fatigue,’ meaning that by 4pm you need to charge the bloody thing. Native Union have come up with a novel way of always ensuring you have a bit of extra juice on you - the Jump is a cable with a battery attached - so when you’re by a power source you can plug in and charge, when you’re not, the battery takes over giving you enough power to send the inevitable ‘battery at 1% will call later’ text.
The health thing - Birch Water By this time next year, you will have tasted Birch Water. It’s the new Coconut Water and is pretty much exactly what it sounds like - water from Birch trees. I won’t list all the super human stuff it will do to you but know this - it’s pure, no nasty stuff, and it’s probably one of the best things you can put in your body. You just have to get your head around the fact that it comes out of a tree!

we include lots of little touches like a Champagne and coffee bar, luxury gift wrapping and chocolate treats to ensure our customers feel special every time they visit us. Discover the ultimate in relaxation at the
SUITES HOTEL SPA
H
is & Hers magazine had an invitation to a day of luxurious relaxation. From the moment we stepped into the Spa reception area, life seemed to slow down to that point where you can destress. We were charmed by the friendliness and efficiency of all the staff. They simply offer a wide ranging and impressive treatment menu that is sure to include more than a few packages that will appeal. The sheer scope of the facilities is awe inspiring. We were given a conducted tour: there’s a Thermal Suite for heat and ice experience, the double Rasul Chamber for rejuvenating mud treatments, and of course there is a Relaxation Suite where you can sink into blissful oblivion (people have been known to snore). It’s difficult to describe the sheer luxury and comfort that we were wrapped in for the whole of our visit. There’s a spaciousness that reminds me of Roman architecture, yet it’s a sparkling new venue that stretches as far as a delightful restaurant. We chose from the lunch menu, and so once we had ‘checked in’ and relaxed for a while, we made our way to discover that lunch was waiting for us. The Cajun salmon salad was delicious, with a slight kick of spice that gave it an extra layer of flavour: I’m assured the Chicken Caesar salad was gorgeous. There was plenty of time to eat and chat before our treatments. The deep tissue muscle energiser massage was truly blissful. It’s therapeutic relaxation to alleviate stress and releases the discomfort of aching muscles. Essential Oil Balms warm and tone the skin. This was followed by a facial (there are many options) that uses essential oils and a gentle polish leaving the skin fresh and radiant. There are many, many treatments to choose from.

Robyn McGlinchey’s HEALTH & FITNESS SECRETS FOR SUMMER Grilled, barbequed or steamed, seafood is always a winner in summer, so seek out produce from the sea. Use the longer evenings to make your own sweet snacks; it’s much easier to manage your sugar consumption this way. Regular exercise There are endless good reasons to exercise regularly. NHS guidelines say that we should include a combination of aerobic activity as well as strength training. Try combining exercise with daily activities, this will save you time and provide opportunities to spend quality time with family and friends. Exercise is a mood regulator so fall in love with the energetic, healthy feeling that regular activity gives you. Drinking more Our bodies are nearly two thirds water so it’s imperative to keep fluid levels topped up. This helps keep the body nourished and functioning well both inside and out. All liquid drinks contribute to fluid intake but plain water is calorie free so it’s the best choice. Time out Mastering your summer health kick! Usually, it’s New Year that brings about resolutions to embark on healthier habits but long, cold winter nights make it excruciatingly hard to keep up. In summer, however, it’s far easier to don your trainers, eat greenery and drink plenty of water. So, do it now! Convert yourself into a fitter, healthier, brighter version of you. Eating better Although one could argue that these four areas are intertwined, it’s food that is the obvious place to start your new health kick. Embrace the wonderful array of vegetables, salad ingredients and fruit on offer. Swap your usual carbohydrate options for things like couscous or quinoa, or buy different shaped pasta for easy, fun ways to mix things up.
A less obvious aid to health but it’s vital to find ways to de-stress. Regularly taking time to relax both body and mind is imperative to recharge energy levels and remain positive. Relaxation leads to better productivity, too, which keeps the boss happy at work and will help cross off the long to do list at home. Good sleep patterns have been scientifically proven to contribute to positive health and laughter is noted as a key means to unwind, boost mood and relieve tension. The physical benefits of relaxing include a lower heart rate, decreased blood pressure, slower breathing, reduced muscle tension and increased blood flow to the muscles. And this brings me back to exercise. Be motivated! Master your health and well-being!

P
hil Gallagher, Art Director at Electric London, is a regular contributor to His & Hers Magazine, styling hair for shoots and regularly sharing his top tips and advice with readers. Looking after the tresses of regular Electric clients, working as a stylist for shoots and videos and training the next generation of stylists keeps Phil’s schedule varied. Phil says that he tries to bring the influence of the high-fashion looks he creates editorially into the salon, offering his clients in the North West plenty of alternatives to the perpetually popular ‘curly blow dry’. Of course your hairdresser is the first person you turn to when considering a new style or colour. However, with Electric Hair’s gradually expanding product line, Phil and the team are also happy to advise on the most suitable product for your hair type and to give tips on how the pros get the best from their styling products. This combination of finding your perfect cut and colour and then focusing on aftercare so that that fresh from the salon ego boost lasts between cuts has been winning Electric plenty of famous fans. Paloma Faith said: “My hair has never felt healthier” after entrusting her locks to the Electric team. This desire to leave the salon with hair that feels noticeably healthier reflects the growing move towards treating our hair to the same kind of T.L.C as our complexion. These days, rather than just leaving the salon with a sleek new cut or chic colour, we’re likely to want the perfect products to take home to help us maintain that healthy, glossy feel. Admittedly, this makes trips to the hairdressers a little more expensive, but it also means more good hair days.

BARLEY & BEANS
E
ver since Barley & Beans opened in Hatton Garden, Liverpool, last year, the venue has impressed with its excellent food, drink and impeccable, friendly service. We first reviewed Barley & Beans shortly after it opened its doors and have been returning as loyal customers ever since. The quality of the food and service hasn’t changed, but a few things have. You can now order Barley & Beans dishes and have them delivered directly to your doorstep via Deliveroo. Perfect for the morning after a big night when only a famous Barley & Beans ‘The Master’ full English breakfast consumed in the comfort of your own home will restore you to your former self. There’s also a new menu, featuring an excellent selection of breakfast options, lunches, including the venue’s muchloved Sunday dinners, which we rate as amongst the best in the city. However, if it’s a Sunday lunch you crave, we’d advise booking early. Tables tend to book up very fast for Sunday lunches at Barley & Beans. Aside from the classics, we’d heartily recommend the healthy yet delicious salads, the indulgent stacked pancakes and the nachos which mark the pinnacle of His & Hers’s snacking experiences. We could give you a hundred different reasons to pay a visit to Barley & Beans. However, we’ll stick with the basics: The food and drinks on offer are exceptionally good, the portion sizes are generous, offering excellent value, and the friendly team make this independently owned business feel as welcoming as your own living room.

The
London Experience WORDS: Jean Hill
T
he itinerary was potentially challenging and exciting in equal measure: to travel to London, review a 5 star hotel, visit Covent Garden, and attend the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, and find interesting places to eat in between the many distractions.
His & Hers magazine takes us to many fascinating places: it means we travel on the West Coast Line regularly and we were delighted to discover that it’s possible to upgrade to first class on Virgin Trains for as little as £10 to £15 each way, on weekends, and bank holidays. We travelled in great comfort, had access to free Wi-Fi (subject to availability), and enjoyed complimentary drinks and snacks, including a delicious Danish pastry and, alternatively, depending on times, a satisfying bacon muffin is part of the deal. It takes all the hassle out of travelling, and we arrived at Euston ready to enjoy every moment of our stay. The First Class experience with Virgin Trains on the West Coast Mainline goes beyond the train. Waiting for our train on the return journey, (tired and laden down) we escaped the crowds and relaxed in the tranquil environment of the First Class lounge at Euston where we picked up Fairtrade hot and cold drinks, snacks, Wi-Fi, and weekday newspapers. And it’s all free. I can’t recommend it enough. We had a delicious light meal on the return journey (which was a week-day). The service is impressive: the staff go out of their way to make passengers feel pampered. On arrival, we started with a fabulous lunch at Covent Garden, and then took the tube to Knightsbridge. Harrods is literally around the corner. It’s a short walk from the Tube, through a part of London that is steeped in history, with impressive classical architecture at every turn to reach The Capital, which is a 5 star hotel that waves the flag for comfort and elegance. A golden metallic Ferrari was parked outside (which made us smile), and there were hotel staff waiting to welcome us with the sort of care and attention that seems like second nature, but makes all the difference to a guest. The only disappointment was that we couldn’t dine at Outlaws as we arrived on a Sunday night (Nathan Outlaw is a renowned chef) and it’s a Michelin starred restaurant, famous for its sea-food, but I brought back a signed copy of Nathan Outlaw’s cookery book, which is the next best thing. The lobby is understated elegance: and the bar looks very well stocked, and immensely welcoming, in equal measure! My bedroom was decidedly spacious, furnished in great style: my favourite piece was a beautiful antique writing desk, and I felt instantly at home. The king sized bed was blissfully comfortable, and the bathroom was state of the art (yet classic in design). I was assured that I could ring room service, if I needed anything, and that breakfast could be brought to me (which seemed a tad decadent).

CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW 2015 46
I
t was an early call for Chelsea, and after a delicious breakfast in the elegant surroundings of the hotel’s restaurant, I headed for the Tube. The RHS Chelsea Flower Show is the most prestigious horticultural event in the calendar. Anticipation crackled like electric sparks in the air: press and TV crews vied for prime position, and I was ecstatic to be there amongst the show gardens, lost in admiration (more impressive each year). The weather was not ideal, intermittent rain, and gales blew down blossom and one rather large tree (that had survived the journey from Dubai only to be struck down by the British weather). It makes no difference: it’s a breath-taking experience to be able to walk amongst the flag and bearded iris, take in the heady scent of old fashioned roses, linger over marble sculptures, and finally come upon Dan Pearson’s award winning garden, which was always going to be the Best in Show Garden.
The Laurent-Perrier, Chatsworth Garden, was a daring and triumphant interpretation of the Chatsworth landscape, evocatively inhabiting a triangular space at the end of Main Avenue. The rock formations were spectacular, yet everyone was raving about the small details: the spaces in between, lovingly planted with wild flowers. It was gardening on a grand scale, with fine attention to the ‘incidental’ planting. Dan Pearson swears he won’t be back at Chelsea any time soon but… It’s good to know the garden will find its ‘permanent’ home, back at Chatsworth
The RHS Chelsea Flower Show is the most prestigious horticultural event in the calendar. 47
The designers give it their all. Normal life is on hold from the moment they begin drawing the initial garden plans, and yet they come back year after year, willing to put in the months of hard slog, to create a small piece of magic. And the press and public are the beneficiaries of all the loving care that goes into making Chelsea so inspiring. Celebrities mingle with the press, all equally dazzled by the displays. Mary Berry was spotted enjoying the exquisite perfume of old fashioned roses. Zara Phillips was infinitely patient with the paparazzi, though I suspect she wanted to cut and run to enjoy herself. The Artisan Gardens can be found beyond Main Avenue, and they never disappoint. I love the history and background stories. The Evader’s Garden from Chorley Council, told the story of a World War II pilot, shot down in rural France, sheltered and hidden in a chapel, and eventually safely returned to the UK. The garden showed the remains of a chapel, with a glorious stained glass window, a wicker representation of a wounded pilot, and exquisite wild flower planting: It won Silver Gilt for the designer, who was the son of the injured pilot. The Best Artisan Garden in Show was: The Sculptor’s Picnic Garden, designer Graham Bodie. Another garden: Time in Between, told the story of loss and recollection through the choice of planting. Then on to the Pavilion, which was a breath-taking experience. I was thrilled that Pennard Plants won Gold with their ‘Glory of the Garden’. It was a classic cottage garden, with vegetables bobbing up amongst the planting, and complete with a substantial potting shed, where I was presented with a tiny bouquet of fragrant plants. It was truly memorable. I caught a glimpse of Iris Sibirica, described as a floriferous and vigorous variety (stunning delphinium blue with darker markings). Peter Beales classic roses exuded a potent scent that wafted across the Pavilion, that created a Fantin Latour moment, a celebration of beautiful old-fashioned roses. It’s an eclectic mix: The Beauty of Islam Garden, The REEP Anglo Moroccan Garden Project, an Australian designer created the Time in Between Garden (that explored loss). The Barbados Horticultural Society won Gold for its ‘Tropical Flowers & Foliage’. The Chelsea experience transcends the weather and brings nations together. The crowd and exhibitors are keen to discuss garden lore, and I learnt some useful gardening tips, as I stopped to chat to exhibitors, so the strawberry crops should be a bumper one this year. And there’s still RHS Tatton to look forward to.

uests at my Liverpool restaurant can now feast their eyes on my brand new menu, featuring an intriguing range that combines traditional British dishes prepared using classic French cooking techniques.
Among the various eye-catching starters is rillettes of duck with prunes d’Agen, as well as my personal favourite - the brandade of smoked mackerel - a combination of the finest quality smoked mackerel and freshly-prepared horseradish sauce. The range of main courses is equally eclectic and again harnesses my love for classic dishes. Eating out should be all about affordable glamour and that’s at the very heart of this new menu. We’ve taken timeless dishes and given them a contemporary twist. What could be better? Diversity is a theme throughout the menu, with stand-out plates including macaroni with wild mushrooms and poached egg, a coq and shrimp curry with fresh mango and ginger and roast rump of lamb a la dijonnaise.

A DINING EXPERIENCE WITH A DIFFERENCE AT
THE
OLD BLIND SCHOOL HAVING WATCHED THE OLD BLIND SCHOOL BEING TRANSFORMED FROM A FORGOTTEN ARCHITECTURAL TREASURE TO ONE OF LIVERPOOL’S BEST PLACES TO EAT AND DRINK, I ASKED THE OWNERS FOR THE INSIDE SCOOP ON THE TOBS STORY.
T
oday, The Old Blind School provides a chic, understated base to eat and drink in the heart of Liverpool. Nothing about this place tries too hard – from the pared down decor to the discreet service and fuss-free menu, this is a venue where you just know that you’re in safe hands. The bar is incredibly well stocked, the food is exceptional and the staff really know their stuff. If you’d like to revel in this, you can be whisked upstairs to dine. However, if it’s a simple hangover-busting breakfast or casual drinks with friends that you desire, the Old Blind School team are happy to oblige. Co-owners Paul Newman and David Mooney clearly both obsess over the details. Paul mentions the pressure he felt to restore The Old Blind School to its former glory impeccably, doing justice to the building’s impressive architectural features, while David mused that although he has a two Michelin star background, he fixates just as much on ensuring that if it’s bangers and mash you want, it’s the world’s best bangers and mash that you get as he did over “the fancy stuff”. Built between 1851 and 1931, the venue was the city’s original school for the blind, which later moved to Church Road in Wavertree.

WORDS: Emma Hill PICTURES: Jennie Blake
HIS&HERS FOOD & DRINK David said: “I want people to have a great experience whether they’re coming in for a pint of beer or for a special dinner. To make that happen Paul and I work really hard to ensure that all the little things are done well. We have a fantastic team, which helps!” Paul said that he was incredibly proud of The Old Blind School, which has gained a loyal customer base not just for the great food, but also for the fine ales, impressive wine list and the cocktails on offer. Paul commented: “How could you look at this building and not fall in love with it? I first started to come to this part of the city in the mid ‘90s and I remember going to 60 Hope Street when it first opened. I have seen this area develop with the likes of the Quarter and HOST opening and today this feels like a real destination area for restaurants.” He added: “I’ve been in this business for 30 years now and this is the seventh venue David and I have opened. We want to offer quality at the right price – the modern answer to the gastro-pub.” The Old Blind School has only been open for a few months, but already has a loyal customer base. The 200 cover restaurant feels bustly throughout the week at most times of the day and Paul and David’s decision to model the venue on their hugely successful Old Sessions House in Knutsford has clearly been a wise one.
It’s an incredibly easy venue to warm to and there are signs that this is just the beginning of Paul and David’s Liverpool invasion. With experienced Liverpool-based PR, Holly Wood, on a mission to spread the word about the venue both regionally and nationally, there are hints that a second Liverpool venue will open within months. Having asked (or more accurately begged) Paul, David and Holly to reveal the location of their next site to His & Hers, I have sadly accepted that like many others in Liverpool, I’ll just have to wait and speculate on likely looking sites. All I will say is that The Old Blind School will be a hard act to follow. If you haven’t already paid it a visit, I really would recommend it, whether it’s for casual drinks, a special occasions or simply the ultimate recovery breakfast. It’s a friendly, versatile venue with a welcoming team – and I have a feeling it’s already both the cause of and the cure for many of the city’s hangovers!

EMMA HILL’S SKINADE DIARY
JEAN HILL’S SKINADE DIARY
I’d first spotted Skinade on social media platforms like Instagram, where the likes of Millie Mackintosh, Lucy Watson and Jo Whiley have been posting pictures of the supplement and raving about the effects it has had on their skin.
The astonishing fact about Skinade is that everyone notices the difference, and I do mean everyone: males, females, people down at the gym, and friends who don’t normally pay compliments.
So when the opportunity arose to road-test Skinade, which is available from the House Beauty Spa for £90 for 30 days’ supply, I couldn’t resist and had soon enlisted my mother to join me in trialling this new celebrity essential. Without getting too specific, I’m in my 30s and my mother is a few years older (don’t worry, mum – that’s all I’m revealing!) I’m hopeful that I’ve inherited my parents’ good genes; my friends have been asking my mother to spill her skincare secrets since we were teens and my father also looks far younger than his years. However, I have noticed those pesky fine lines and signs of sun damage and have been seeking the holy grail of miracle eye creams with increasing enthusiasm ever since my early twenties. I’m pretty happy with my diet and skincare regime and I exercise regularly and happily sip two litres of water a day, so I wasn’t entirely sure how much difference a supplement would make. However, within a few days of taking Skinade, my skin already felt softer and I could see the fine lines around my eyes beginning to recede (having witnessed this process in reverse ever since my early twenties, this was a very exciting development). After a month of taking Skinade, my skin was noticeably brighter, softer and fine lines were fading. I also felt that my hair was beginning to look a little fuller and healthier and I’m convinced I’ve also seen an improvement in my energy levels. Devotees of Skinade say I’ll notice even more significant results in the longer term. I’m inclined to believe them and would recommend this product to anyone. It’s not cheap, but it really does deliver.
I could see and feel the difference within weeks, and I’ve been having conversations about Skinade ever since. It costs what you’d pay for a large cappuccino every day. So if that’s your habit, consider changing your habit to Skinade. I think there are benefits to my hair and nails, too, and though I can’t verify this scientifically, I seem to have more energy. I think and feel that my skin is a shining example of what is possible with Skinade. I can almost predict the point at which people will ask what I’ve been doing to improve my complexion: there’s a sideways on scrutiny, an acknowledgement that something is positively, glowingly different, and anyone around my age or younger wants to know how it can be done. Skinade is a multiaward winning, natural peach and mangosteen flavoured anti-ageing drink containing active ingredients that boosts your body’s natural production of collagen and hyaluronic acid. Skinade has been developed by leading UK scientists to create one of the most advanced, effective anti-ageing skincare products on the market today, a drink that works from the inside out. Traditional beauty products only function on the surface of the skin, The advanced formulation of collagen and essential micro-nutrients ensures rapid absorption, nourishing your skin from the inside and giving you a more youthful, glowing and radiant complexion.

Re-setting at SHAKTI STUDIOS HAVE YOU EVER NOTICED HOW MUCH TIGHTER YOUR SHOULDERS, BACK AND NECK TEND TO FEEL BY THE END OF THE WORKING DAY? HIS & HERS CHECKED OUT A SIMPLE SOLUTION AT SHAKTI STUDIOS.
I
have a lot of affection for Shakti Studios, a well managed and incredibly welcoming yoga studio in Liverpool’s business district.
Their yoga classes attract a broad mix of people and deliver a ludicrous boost in terms of happiness and relaxation for a minimal outlay (with classes starting from £7 per class or £20 for your first 30 days in the non-hot studio). Recently, a friend told me that as I loved the yoga classes, I really ought to try some of Shakti’s holistic services. I did and was so impressed that not only have I been telling everyone I know to try Synergy Somatics and a ‘Healing Hands’ massage ever since, I also decided it was about time I used the magazine to try and entice the few people I haven’t had the opportunity to nag in person and tell you that although you may not know it yet, you really do need Somatics and ‘Healing Hands’ in your life. I’d heartily recommend a Healing Hands back, neck and shoulder massage (£25), which will melt away the knots that somehow seem to multiply when you spend long periods working at your desk. Booking a massage is such a nice treat to yourself and one of the most indulgent ways I can think of to tackle neck and back pain before it becomes more serious. Also, if, like me, you’d never tried Somatics before, please do put this right! April Bradbury explained to me that Somatics addresses the stiffness and postural issues that we all face. Simple things like the way you carry your bag every day, or the actions you repeat in work can put pressure on certain areas of the body, affecting your alignment and posture. April took a quick video as I walked up and down the corridor at Shakti Studios, then began a one-to-one session during which she identified the areas of the body where I carried the most tension and helped me to carry out simple, controlled movements to stretch out certain muscles and unlock tension in the body. At the end of my session, a second video was taken and I was amazed to see the difference between the two clips. In the first, the left-hand-side of my body was visibly tensed, while in the second my gait was smoother and more even. One-to-one Somatics sessions start from £30. Whether you’re a yoga devotee or not, please do try these clever holistic services. At the very least they’ll help you relax – at best, you really will feel like a weight’s been lifted from your shoulders.

oasting stunning architecture, an impressive bar and restaurant, and service worth tipping generously for, NYL is a firm His & Hers favourite.
Therefore, we jumped at the chance to be amongst the first to catch up with the NYL team to discuss their two new menus, which they’ve launched this summer. Executive Head Chef at the North John Street venue, Rob Scott, and Head Barman, Ben Kearney have worked together with the team to carefully and creatively craft a food and drink offering that gives a real taste of New York with all-new Deli and Cocktail menus, and extra dishes added for lunch and dinner. Breakfast kicks off at 7am with an unlimited continental selection available until 10am, and Full English available until 12noon for the late risers. The all-new Deli Menu offers a hot and cold sandwich selection with diners able to chose from bagels, toasted ciabatta and sourdough filled with the likes of salmon and cream cheese, pastrami with pickle and mozzarella, macaroni cheese and homemade beef meatballs from just £5.50. Served from 10am-5pm, the Deli Menu is the perfect choice for shoppers and on-the-go diners to grab a quick and flavourful bite to eat, and for hosting informal business meetings with free Wi-Fi and booths available. Rob Scott, is delighted with the new dishes: “Looking to New York for inspiration we wanted to offer people the culinary classics they’d expect but with our own sophisticated NYL twist. High quality, locally sourced ingredients are paramount, and have been key to creating our new fresh summertime flavours.” For the full list of new menus and dishes at NYL Restaurant and Bar visit www.nyliverpool.com

ou’ll find an array of Wirral restaurants offering exemplary Sunday Lunches. One of our favourites is the Lawns Restaurant at Thornton Hall Hotel & Spa.
With 3 AA Rosettes for fine dining, the restaurant offers an enticing mix of international dishes. Friends of His & Hers Magazine tell us that the Tasting Menu (priced at £80 per person) is out of this world. We’ll have to put sampling this on our life list! In the meantime, we’d been told by various sources that the Lawns’ Sunday Lunches were something very special. We sent James Topping to investigate. James ordered a classic Sunday roast featuring Welsh Beef Sirloin, Chantenay carrots, roast potatoes and a Yorkshire pudding. James declared that he was blown away by the talents of Executive Chef, Matthew Worswick, and his team. The food was complemented with a perfectly matched Malbec, which was recommended by the friendly and attentive Thornton Hall team. In brief, the food really is outstanding, the wine list is impressive and plenty of advice is on offer if you’re agonising over the perfect tipple to accompany your meal. The views across the lawns are lovely, creating a real feeling of tranquillity. The restaurant itself with its wood panelling and striking architectural features provides a stunning setting for fine dining and the food is so good that many return to the Lawns week after week, helping to make the restaurant a popular destination at all times of the week.

CAFÉ ROUGE,
a taste of Paris in Paradise Street WORDS: Jean Hill
I
t’s a regular haunt of the His & Hers crew: it’s a place to eat really good food, and enjoy great service. There’s always a friendly welcome, and it’s got that ‘people relaxed and enjoying themselves’ vibe. Recently reopened after a designer makeover, His & Hers was delighted to be asked to review Café Rouge, and because our choices were becoming ever so slightly predictable, try a few new dishes on the menu. The French inspired interior complements perfectly the delicious food and wine, and it’s located within the shopping and leisure complex, Liverpool ONE, which also boasts a 14 screen Odeon cinema with IMAX®, a leisure terrace, and luxury hotels, including the Hilton close by. Simon, who was there to serve us on the day, has been doing some cookery training, so he can share his knowledge of how the meals are prepared. The chicken liver pâté, with grilled rye and caraway bread and chutney, was smooth, rich and with a hint of spiciness. Croquettes de Canard were full of flavour and the duck was delectably tender. Rouge Caesar was a classic Caesar salad, with avocado, French croutons, authentic dressing, and chicken breasts that were slightly crispy on the outside, yet succulently tender and moist to the taste. Truite (trout) Fumé came with tender slivers of beetroot and rocket with a piquant sauce that I loved. I started to say that someone needed to try a dessert but it wouldn’t be me, when I spotted Crème Brûlee on the menu and spluttered: ‘Me, me, I’m having dessert after all’. Not dignified. It was a divine combination of smooth creamy vanilla custard and piquant pepper that enhanced the flavour of the accompanying strawberries. Relaxing and enjoyable, with great views and outdoor seating, Café Rouge is totally recommended.

His & Hers Magazine’s
YORKSHIRE ROAD TRIP
WHETHER IT’S FINE DINING, SHOPPING, RELAXATION, CULTURE OR JUST GREAT VIEWS THAT YOU CRAVE, YORKSHIRE HAS IT ALL. WORDS: James Topping & Emma Hill
T
This summer, His & Hers Magazine was invited to pay a visit to the Cleveland Tontine, a rather beautiful seven-bedroom Yorkshire hotel which is a mere two-and-a half-hours from Liverpool. Having taken a look at the hotel’s website, featuring chic individually designed bedrooms and their welcoming yet highly regarded restaurant, we swiftly cleared our diaries. As we were keen to make the most of the journey, making the time spent in the car an enjoyable part of the mini break, rather than a chore, we hired the zippy yet refined BMW 2 series for the weekend. As we left Liverpool, my partner decided to start our journey in style and make the most of the sunny evening by driving with the roof down. We had so much fun enjoying the sporty yet smooth driving experience that the first part of the journey flew by. With the radio playing and the car’s Sat Nav taking the hard work out of planning the best route, we savoured the Yorkshire scenery and the building sense of anticipation as we neared our destination.

The Cleveland Tontine makes an excellent first impression with its blend of period and contemporary architecture. Bidding the BMW 2 a fond farewell for the evening (we really had enjoyed the drive), we peaked through the window into the busy yet immaculate kitchen which is visible as you approach the Cleveland Tontine. We were then whisked upstairs to ‘The Coach House’, our room for the evening, which had been designed with flair and a sense of fun, contrasting a striking ‘book-case’ wallpaper and bold design classics. The rather lovely views across the surrounding woodland are rather easy on the eye, too.

We were told that the feature wallpaper had been designed by award winning local designer Deborah Bowness. We followed a staircase within the bedroom up to a luxurious bathroom in the eaves. The double shower and free-standing bath would entice any weary traveller and the views across the Yorkshire countryside are even more striking from the bathroom. With our tour of the room complete, dinner beckoned. Having heard of the Cleveland Tontine’s formidable reputation for fine dining, we were expecting something rather formal, but the Bistro has a warm, cosy and intimate feel, which immediately puts diners at their ease. The seared Isle of Mull scallops melted in the mouth and my caramelised chicory and onion tart proved that some restaurants really do go the extra mile with their vegetarian options. In the morning, we headed back downstairs to the light and airy Conservatory (the perfect counterpoint to the intimately lit Bistro). Our friendly waitress advised us on must-visit sites during our planned day trip to York while serving up tasty and attractively presented breakfasts. It

was the perfect start to the day! Having fortified ourselves with hearty breakfasts, we hopped back into the BMW 2 for our day in York. With the sun hitting our backs and the car’s top down, we settled in for another enjoyable drive. Having soaked up the Yorkshire scenery and said a silent thank you to the car’s Sat Nav for keeping us on track, we soon found ourselves in the heart of this beautiful historic city. It was our first visit to York and we really had hoped to dedicate more time to the Roman remains. However, an early sighting of an amazing cake shop and a Mulberry store derailed these plans somewhat! As night fell, we drove to the Cedar Court Hotel in Bradford for the last evening of our Yorkshire adventure. The staff at this popular hotel greeted us warmly and helped us to plan our evening. They suggested that no visit to Bradford could be considered complete without a trip to a curry house. The award winning Akbar’s was recommended as the best in the area and we weren’t disappointed. Giant naan breads, excellent main courses, incredibly efficient service
and very modest prices proved to be a winning formula, making for a really fun, informal evening.

Our room at Cedar Court was chic, modern and simply designed, and we couldn’t resist one more hotel breakfast before we said goodbye to Yorkshire. I can vouch for the fact that Cedar Court serves excellent breakfasts and the team there were so welcoming that we were sad to say goodbye. We made the most of our last drive in the BMW 2, which we’d heartily recommend for a really fun yet comfortable driving experience – it’s the kind of car that makes you want to go away in the UK, rather than overseas, enjoying every mile you travel. Therefore, we were a little glum when we returned to Williams Liverpool, where we reluctantly handed over the keys to the vehicle. Our conclusion: if you’ve never thought of Yorkshire as a holiday destination before, please do reconsider. You won’t regret it, and if you’re looking for a car you’ll want to spend your weekends, as well as your week-day commute in, the BMW 2 is that car.

HIS & HERS IS INTRODUCED TO THE CELEBRITIES’ FAVOURITE,
GIVE KITCHEN THERE’S BEEN A LOT OF TALK AT HIS & HERS RECENTLY ABOUT THE RAPID RISE IN POPULARITY OF THE HEALTHY VEGAN DIETS THAT CELEBS HAVE BEEN FOLLOWING OVER SHORT PERIODS TO LOOK AND FEEL THEIR BEST.
F
orget the frankly brutal sounding Maple Syrup diet which Beyoncé made famous years ago, when she apparently consumed nothing but detox drinks mixed with Maple Syrup for a short time to drop weight for a film role. Actually, we’re still trying to forget that diet, ever since one of our writers gamely road tested it. Let’s just say we wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.
Give Kitchen clients can follow the 22-day vegan challenge popularised by Beyoncé for just £199, which will deliver them two meals and one dessert per day for 22 days. Give Kitchen clients will be in good company, as A-List celebrities such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Lopez, Jared Leto, Jessica Simpson and Joaquin Phoenix are already devotees of a vegan lifestyle.
A few years on, flashbulbs popped as an older and wiser Beyoncé took to the red carpet at the Met Gala in New York recently, wearing a sheer Givenchy dress which called for some serious body confidence. The star confessed that she’d been following a 22-day vegan diet. Healthy, balanced and nutritious, that sounds much better to us! Founded by Paul Hampson and Dario Curcillo and launched in early June, Give Kitchen which is a part of the Give 2040 Foundation, will offer clients the delicious vegan meals favoured by stars like Beyoncé, delivered direct to their door.
Give Kitchen is completely changing the face of veganism by delivering delicious gourmet meals which are prepared from scratch at their state of the art kitchens using premium fresh natural, and where possible locally sourced organic ingredients. Sounds good to us!
Clients will be able to savour premium vegan meals at their convenience, delivered to their choice of address. Based in Liverpool, Give Kitchen is launching in style with a competitive £45.50 price point for seven daily nutritious meals and healthy desserts.

D EPASSIONS SIGN VOLGA V12 COUPE Volgas were very cool and ‘posh’ back in Soviet Union days. This version (BMW at its heart) is a very nice example of what that ugly duckling could have been. I’d love to own this car, in chrome dark red of course.

CRYSTAL HEAD VODKA BOTTLE I don’t drink alcohol but I can appreciate the design of this creative bottle. The bottle itself is a good warning of the dangers of alcohol, a little bit of death in your glass!
MY BEAUTIFUL RING THAT MY HUSBAND BOUGHT IN VALENCIA It’s crudely made but very beautiful and meaningful. The ring symbolizes eternity, and I like lying side by side like this.
