INTRODUCING JO MALONE LONDON’S ‘ROCK THE AGES’ BEHIND THE SCENES WITH MCBUSTED SPRING / SUMMER FASHION ESSENTIALS IN ASSOCIATION WITH NEXT MARVELOUS MINI-BREAKS
WELCOME TO THE 30TH EDITION OF HIS & HERS MAGAZINE.
Emma Hill (Editor)
Way back in 2011, the first issue of His & Hers Magazine, featuring ‘the people, products and places lighting up Liverpool this year’ was launched. Looking back on that issue, it’s made me smile as I’ve realised that although some of our tech recommendations have dated, the people and companies we featured at the heart of the issue are all still making waves across the North West. I’d like to say a special thank you to Sharon Simons at Malmaison (my first ever advertiser) who’s been working with His & Hers Magazine ever since our launch on a series of fun and creative campaigns and offers. Thanks are also due to: Next, McArthurGlen, Boux Avenue, American Apparel, The Echo Arena, Mococo, Tracey Bell, Hotel Indigo, Liverpool One Bridewell, The House, Bierkeller and Hard Days Night to name but a few. All of these brands entrusted the His & Hers team with longer-term advertising campaigns, enabling us to keep adding pages and, of course, to reach our 30th edition. I’m proud of every edition we’ve produced and prouder of the people who’ve joined me in burning the midnight oil to work their design and editorial magic. Thanks to Jonathan Allinson for the design of the issue, Bryan Harrop for the styling and to regular contributors: Marco Pierre White (in association with Hotel Indigo & Moore Media), Matt and Jayne Littler, Emma McHarrie and Robyn McGlinchey for the fantastic features writing. I’m very grateful to Think Publicity and NYL for all their help with our cover shoot and big Next fashion shoot, to Bianca of Jo Malone London for working her magic for our beautiful Rock the Ages feature and to Michelle Mone for finding so much time to speak to us about the creation of her Ultimo lingerie empire. The talented Jennie Blake has been a big part of this issue and you’ll spot her photography, design work and writing throughout this edition. You’ll also spot my amazing mother Jean Hill’s beautifully written food and drink pages and two very special reviews, courtesy of James Topping and Camille Annette. We’re already hard at work on our next edition, but if you just can’t wait until June, please look out for our new website, which has been created by the brilliant Chris Danks of Cyber Host Pro. You’ll find all of our behindthe-scenes videos, images and news at: www.hisandhersmag.co.uk from this spring. Thanks to everyone who’s read, contributed to, stocked, supported or advertised in His & Hers Magazine for the chance to celebrate our 30th edition. Please do look out for the next issue!

HIS&HERS LUXURY
JO MALONE LONDON INTRODUCES
‘ROCK
THE AGES’ COLLECTION
I’VE ALWAYS FELT THAT A FRAGRANCE CAN TRANSPORT YOU BACK TO A MOMENT IN TIME FAR MORE EFFICIENTLY THAN FASHION. GIVEN THE POWERFUL LINK BETWEEN SCENTS AND MEMORIES, IT SEEMS ONLY FITTING THAT JO MALONE LONDON HAS SOUGHT TO ENCAPSULATE KEY MOMENTS IN BRITISH HISTORY IN A SERIES OF EVOCATIVE FRAGRANCES. WORDS: Emma Hill
9
HIS&HERS LUXURY
It’s a brave move to attempt to capture Great Britain’s golden ages in a series of fragrances. However Jo Malone London’s Master Perfumer, Christine Nagel, has clearly relished the challenge of creating the limited edition Rock the Ages collection. “The idea was to capture the atmosphere of some of Britain’s most defining eras; periods of British history so unique that each one has its own globally recognised ambience of drama and character. We wanted to encapsulate these ages in scent, creating a collection that would playfully appeal to the imagination”, said Christine. Featuring five distinctive scents, Rock the Ages takes fragrance lovers on an olfactory tour through different eras.
10
TUDOR ROSE & AMBER
HIS&HERS LUXURY
Tudor Rose & Amber was inspired by Tudor Britain. The heraldic Tudor rose with spicy clove, opulent rose absolute and the warm sensuality of amber creates a rich, sumptuous scent.
LILY OF THE VALLEY & IVY Embodying Georgian Britain, an initial note of green ivy is complemented by a lavish heart of delicate lily of the valley. Despite His & Hers’s initial trepidation about lily-based fragrances potentially being overly sweet, we were utterly captivated by this soft, ethereal scent with its sweetness cleverly undercut by the ivy notes.
POMEGRANATE NOIR Capturing Victorian Britain, luscious pomegranate is layered with heady Casablanca lily and sensual guaiacwood in one of His & Hers’s all time favourite fragrances. Pomegranate Noir is dramatic and intense and is the perfect evening fragrance.
GERANIUM & VERBENA Edwardian Britain is epitomised with Aromatic verbena blended with refined and crisp geranium. This fresh, clean scent with herbaceous tones is incredibly easy to warm to.
BIRCH & BLACK PEPPER Reflecting Britain today, Birch & Black Pepper is a scent of contrasts, pairing the cool spiciness of black pepper with smoky birch. Jo Malone London describes this fragrance as being individual and audacious.
The Rock the Ages collection is available from March. Each of the 30ml colognes featured in the collection has an RRP of £42 for 30ml.

MATT & JAYNE’S MUST-HAVES JAYNE’S OBSESSIONS: I’ve tried to choose between two books which you must rush out and buy, but I just couldn’t bear to choose, so you’ll have to! These books are more than just holiday reads – they’re essential reading for the fabulous fashionistas that are His & Hers readers.
Jayne Mahon
Firstly ‘How to be Parisian Wherever You Are’ is ideal for anyone who adores Paris. It’s not just a cute read, but a necessity. Helping you with everything from what you won’t find in her closet to Sunday recipes to the Parisian essentials, such as a little black blazer, ballet flats and oversized sunglasses, this book has it all. Getting that Parisian feeling already..? Sali Hughes’s ‘Pretty Honest’ is more of a beauty bible than a regular book. Sali is a journalist who has written for every magazine that you can think of, and is currently Beauty Editor of the Guardian. ‘Pretty Honest’ will hold your hand through most beauty decisions and generally help you with amazing hints and tricks on how to do things best. So don’t wait, go get these books, or at least make sure you put them on top of your wish list. The must-have look for hair at the moment has to be the chop. Don’t worry, ladies and gents, I know it’s not for everyone, but if it’s something that you’ve thought about why not give it a go? The midi length is here to stay for summer - think Sienna, Margot and even Kim. Cut and colour go hand in hand and for spring/ summer you should be thinking global colours with soft shell and ice cream blondes, and for the darker tones, think auburn, bronze and rose gold. Ombré is still happening but I’m sure your stylist will be moving you on with your colour look about now. So why not use your next salon appointment to freshen up your cut & colour?

HUSBAND AND WIFE TEAM TV PRESENTER MATT LITTLER AND ANDREW COLLINGE ART DIRECTOR JAYNE MAHON SHARE THEIR SPRING OBSESSIONS. MATT’S OBSESSIONS: VR is dead, long live VR So, a while back I wrote about the ‘game changing’ Oculus Rift, a head worn virtual reality device that essentially replaces your human eyes, and lets you feel like you truly are somewhere else. It was a young industry back then, and in the last few weeks things have changed. While the Oculus was no doubt brilliant, it was also expensive, placing it pretty much out of reach for most people - but all that just changed! Some of the bods at google figured out a way to turn your smartphone into a VR device - Google Cardboard ($30 online, or download and build your own free!) is a piece of cardboard you fold up and slide your smartphone into - add some lenses and load up a spacial app - and you’re VR-ing! For free - it’s well worth a look!

Bourbon I’ve spent many an hour up in the Liberty Tavern in Woolton of late. Why? The Bourbon! The guys up there have got a few of the best I’ve tasted, and more than one of them is almost impossible to get hold of! They’ll let you test some and the guys behind the bar are passionate about the spirits, imparting an almost geeklike knowledge of how these caramel coloured elixirs came to be. Next time you’re over that way, why not try the Hudson Baby Bourbon, or the FEW Bourbon (They do a Rye too, but it runs out quickly…sorry). Kick back and pretend you’re Deckard from Bladerunner, or Don Draper!

HIS&HERS FITNESS
ROBYN MCGLINCHEY’S HEALTH & FITNESS SECRETS FOR SPRING
T
he days are getting longer and the start of the year seems like ages ago already. If, like so many of us, your new year’s resolutions are long gone, it’s time to get serious about including exercise in your weekly routine. Finding balance in your life and keeping yourself moving is vital for physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. Don’t worry, there are plenty of tricks to help get you into the habit.
1. Start with a plan Decide what your motivation is - why do you want or need exercise in your life? Set out a weekly schedule of your usual activities and find five spaces to slot 30-40 minutes of exercise into. These need to be times that you can realistically commit to every week without fail.
2. Give it six weeks Aim to stick with your new plan for at least six weeks. You will start to notice the changes in your body, mood and energy levels which should help to motivate you to keep going.
3. Mix it up Choose a form of exercise that works for you. In the morning try something that will feel easy to accomplish like a short run or workout DVD. After work, a bicycle ride or spinning class may be the thing to boost your energy levels for the evening. Alternatively, if it’s all about stress relief try a more gentle class like Pilates or Yoga.
4. Enjoy it Choose forms of exercise that you enjoy. If you look forward to your workouts, you are far more likely to keep doing them.
5. Be prepared Nobody likes to rush around, so get prepared. Have your exercise kit ready well in advance to save you precious time and to help you avoid the temptation to put off your session.
6. Buddy up If you think you might be tempted to start skipping some of your sessions, think about hiring a personal trainer, find a friend who can join you or sign up for a group class. Making a regular exercise date will help you stick with it.
7. Have a rest day Plan at least one day in the week on which you have a total rest and take time to indulge in your favourite activity. It’s important to find a balance with all things, including exercise. Take that time out and love it! To sum up, start small and grow from there. Enjoy your sessions and keep focussed on the benefits of your physical efforts. Exercise is not just about losing weight or getting fit, it’s about feeling less stressed, more energised, happier, healthier, getting better sleep, and gaining confidence in yourself and the things you can achieve.

M
cBusted have been on a surreal journey since their formation. The super group announced their first 11 show tour dates last year, which then became 35 shows due to phenomenal demand. It would be fair to say that McBusted have an incredible fan base. After the excitement and huge success of last year’s tour, the group have announced their second tour for spring 2015. His & Hers were lucky enough to catch up with the group before they return to Liverpool’s Echo Arena on 31st March, and they were every bit as entertaining as we expected. As we sat down, McBusted enthusiastically discussed their debut new album. “We had so much fun while making the new album. It was exciting and it didn’t need experimenting with, it just seemed to happen” said Harry. This is easy to believe as the group came across as relaxed, unguarded and clearly extremely close friends. When asked about their highlights since forming, they spoke about their extraordinary year, and James exclaimed: “We made a unanimous decision that headlining at Hyde Park was our greatest day. It was the pinnacle of our careers.” As the Liverpool tour quickly sold out last year, Harry also explained how amazing the Liverpool audience was, and said their history here means it will be great to come back. Before we left the band, we were intrigued to find out what was to be expected from their return to the city. All they were willing to give away was to await biggest hits from McFly and McBusted and a few surprises!
Tickets to see McBusted at The Echo Arena on 31st March cost £46.50. Visit: www.echoarena.com to book your tickets. 39

hen the His & Hers team arrived at the Liverpool ONE Debenhams store to meet leading entrepreneur, Michelle Mone, at the launch of the new Ultimo concession, an eager crowd of photographers had already gathered. As Michelle strode through the store, the photographers sprang into action, capturing Michelle’s warm and friendly encounters with the customers who’d queued to meet her. After smilingly agreeing to all requests for pictures, Michelle ushered the His & Hers team into a quiet area for our interview. Having left the crowd of well wishers behind her, Michelle smiled as she confessed: “Liverpool has always been a key city for us. I’ve always wanted shops in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Manchester and Liverpool and this year we’re opening in all of these cities.” Celebrating the success of Ultimo, which has become one of the UK’s best-loved lingerie brands, Michelle looked relaxed and confident and her eyes shone as she discusses the challenges of launching her business. However, as anyone who has read Michelle’s bestselling book, ‘Fight to the Top’ will know, her success has not come without significant challenges. Born into near poverty in the east end of Glasgow, Michelle left school at just 15, launching Ultimo when she was just 20. Michelle told His & Hers that it would have been very easy to have written “the usual business book”, focusing on a rags to riches success story. However, the usually cheerful entrepreneur looked very serious for a moment as she told us that she had felt a sense of responsibility not simply to write about her triumphs. Michelle admitted that it had been a brave step to be utterly candid when writing her book, but added that if her honesty inspired women to start up a business or to turn their lives around, the gamble of laying her life bare on the page would all have been worthwhile. Michelle said: “I’ve been offered a book deal for the past six years (but when it came down to it) I had a tough time writing the book. I was opening up a lot of old wounds. I was drinking a lot (while writing the book).” However, having written about her darkest moments, from the highs and lows of running her own business to surviving a high-profile divorce following her husband’s infidelity with a trusted employee, Michelle has emerged stronger and happier. Michelle said: “I don’t regret any of it. It’s a powerful book and I’m the happiest I’ve ever been. I wanted the book to inspire people and to be really open and candid.”
HIS&HERS FASHION Adding: “I have lost just under eight stone. I’m running four 10Ks for charity and I couldn’t walk to the local store without getting out of breath before. The lower you fall, the higher you fly when you come back up!” Confessing that she’d been through “absolute hell” for two years at the time of her separation from her ex husband, who she ultimately bought out of the business, Michelle said: “Ultimo is doing incredibly well. I’ve just been offered three more book deals, so will be writing another one this year. It’s beyond my wildest dreams!” Michelle exudes positivity, but like many who’ve experienced challenges in their own lives, she takes extra care to take time to speak kindly and encouragingly to everyone she meets, including slightly startstruck shoppers. She appears to realise intuitively just how much a few thoughtful words or a simple compliment can make when someone’s having a bad day. The entrepreneur’s natural empathy and rare candour make her an incredibly easy interview, but perhaps our location helped, too. Michelle declared: “Liverpool people are a lot like people from Glasgow. I’m here quite a lot... and I love the city!” We end our interview by asking what sets an Ultimo bra apart from the crowd. Michelle replies: “an Ultimo bra gives you confidence”, then as if to illustrate her point, light heartedly revealed that she’d be going out in London that evening (wearing her best-selling Ultimo harness as outer-wear), perhaps to meet a lucky man. We’re sure that Michelle and her confidenceboosting fashion will be making a big impression on the men and women of London and beyond and are very much looking forward to the next chapter of her inspiring story.
His & Hers met with expert bra fitters, Rachel Booth & Hayley Youngman and we’d highly recommend enlisting their fitting services at the Ultimo concession within Debenhams, Liverpool ONE. Confidence (and cleavage) boosting comes as standard:

FULL OF THE
JOYS OF SPRING AT PAN AM WORDS: Camille Annette

P
an Am Restaurant has long been regarded as one of the places to go in Liverpool for a delicious meal or cocktails, so I was excited to find out for myself if it lived up to expectations as we made our way there on a chilly night with crystal clear starry skies above.
The Albert Dock had never looked more beautiful as we meandered along, stopping to take so many photographs that we almost made ourselves late for the reservation! Upon arrival we were warmly welcomed and ushered to a table by the window which offered an expansive vista over the Albert Dock. We were struck by the warm ambiance of the restaurant, with exposed brickwork and pretty fairy lights giving a stylish air to the space. There was a great view down into the contemporary bar area beneath, too, tempting us to consider one or two after dinner cocktails! As we perused the menu, we ordered the house white wine which was perfectly dry and citrusy, with plenty of fruit. We mulled over tempting starters such as garden vegetable risotto and goat’s cheese and butternut squash tart, before deciding to share the warm focaccia, which was served with salad, plump olives and an irresistible pesto-infused olive oil. For my main course, I was torn between the healthy option of a salad and the temptations of the beer battered haddock with chunky chips! In the end virtue won out and I ordered a chicken Caesar salad which was heaped with crispy romaine lettuce and topped with two chargrilled chicken breasts and wonderfully nutty parmesan shavings. My dining companion had the 8oz Ribeye steak served with hand-cut chips, buttered green beans, roasted tomato, flamed red pepper butter and blue cheese sauce. He was delighted by how beautifully presented the dish was, with the juicy steak piled neatly atop the stack of chunky chips. I was subtly eyeing the chips as he waxed lyrical about the steak being cooked perfectly to his preference of medium rare. The restaurant was busy for a Wednesday night and the hubbub of happy chatter in the air, along with the music playing in the background, made for a pleasant atmosphere. After those delicious mains, we claimed to be too full for dessert until our friendly waiter Tom recommended the sticky toffee pudding, which persuaded us to reconsider! I am glad we did because the sponge was light and fluffy and the rich toffee sauce, vanilla ice cream and fresh berries complemented the dish excellently. It was the perfect curtain call to such a fine performance, and after a lovely chat with the general manager, we wandered off into the night feeling full of the joys of spring.

FALLING IN LOVE WITH THE
LORD CREWE ARMS IF YOU TRULY VALUE THE SIMPLE THINGS IN LIFE, THE LORD CREWE ARMS, A LOVINGLY RESTORED TWELFTH CENTURY ABBOT’S PRIORY, IS THE HOTEL FOR YOU.
D
o you remember paraphrasing Occam’s Razor: ‘the simplest solution is often the best’ in your student days? The principle (which is attributed to a 14th century logician) has guided scientists for decades. Sadly, it’s a theory which never seemed to take in quite the same way amongst hoteliers. From choosing the decor to devising menus, even the owners of thoroughly contemporary hotels can rarely resist an extravagant flourish or two. Therefore, when you find a hotel like the Lord Crewe Arms that keeps things beautifully simple it’s impossible not to be disarmed. Following a heart-stopping evening drive over icy roads from Liverpool to Blanchland, His & Hers approached The Lord Crewe Arms. The building is a well preserved architectural gem and the surrounding scenery, featuring views across Northumberland, is incredibly easy to warm to.
44
HIS&HERS TRAVEL The owners say: “Once upon a time a twelfth century Abbot’s Priory, The Lord Crewe Arms of today is just as it began; humble, honest and never overstated.” Having checked in and paid a brief visit to our immaculately decorated room to ditch our luggage, the warmly lit and inviting Crypt Bar beckoned. The friendly and knowledgeable bar staff directed us towards some delicious locally sourced drinks which we took to the fire-side, forgetting about the icy winds blowing outside almost immediately. After a relaxing evening and an excellent restorative sleep, we started a fresh day in the best possible way with excellent Lord Crewe Arms breakfasts. Then, following a day spent exploring the local villages, we returned to the hotel for an incredibly laid back afternoon spent reading the papers by one of the hotel’s inviting real fires. Sipping cool drinks by the fire-side we really did think we’d perfected the art of relaxation until, that is, we spotted the hotel’s offer of bar snacks including Welsh Rarebit and Rosemary Chips. Feasting upon the best bar snacks that we (or quite possibly anyone) has ever tasted, we realised that these perfectly cooked treats were all we had been missing from our afternoon. After spending a few happy hours chatting, we dressed for dinner and made our way to the restaurant where Chef Simon Hicks’ simple yet perfectly delivered dishes have been turning heads. We were impressed by the ‘Everyday Menu’ featuring simply cooked home grown or locally sourced foods. Yes, you’ll find other hotels that have benefited from £1.5 million pound refurbishments and which boast celebrity chefs. However, part of what makes The Lord Crewe Arms so special is not just that the owners have pulled off the difficult task of breathing new life into an old building and bringing fresh talent into the kitchens. It’s the fact that they’ve done all of this and made it look so easy. So, if it’s a perfectly simple solution you’re seeking, we’d recommend this impressive yet unassuming hotel every time.

ELEGANCE AT THORNTON HALL
HIS & HERS PAID A VISIT TO THORNTON HALL HOTEL & SPA AND FOUND A STYLISH YET UNPRETENTIOUS WIRRAL HIDEAWAY WITH MORE TO OFFER THAN MEETS THE EYE.
F
ollowing a hectic few weeks, His & Hers had booked a weekend away at well loved Wirral hotel, Thornton Hall. After a swift and easy drive from Liverpool, we arrived at our destination. Thornton Hall is a popular wedding venue and it’s easy to see why as soon as you gaze up at the impressive architecture and take a brief stroll through the well maintained grounds. Once inside the hotel, we were impressed by the wealth of period features and the incredibly warm welcome from the team at reception. Our room was elegantly decorated and was spacious and well laid out. Happily my travel companion discovered Sky Sports while checking out one of his favourite
46
features of the room (a generously proportioned flat screen television) just as I’d discovered the wide array of spa treatments on offer while browsing through the brochures on display in our room. The spa beckoned and I was thoroughly impressed with a facial and back massage which left my skin feeling smoother and the stresses of the working week temporarily forgotten. When I returned to the hotel room, my travel companion was still happily soaking up the sports coverage, declaring that all good hotels should take a leaf out of Thornton Hall’s book and offer more channels for the ultimate laid back afternoon watching TV and flicking through the newspapers. Having both found our own different routes to relaxation, we made our way downstairs to the Lawns Restaurant. Although we’d already fallen for Thornton Hall’s considerable charms, it was here that we were truly wowed. The restaurant has been awarded three AA rosettes and we soon discovered why. My partner’s main course of beef and my choice of stone bass were delicious, featuring a cleverly combined delicate mix of flavours. We ordered a cheese course for dessert and were thoroughly impressed when a cheese trolley was wheeled to our table. We were given plenty of information about the array of cheeses to help us make the perfect selection and a Port was recommended to complement our choices. As my travel companion is passionate about great cheeses, this was the perfect end to a truly memorable day. After a great night’s sleep in our comfortable room, which we’d grown far too attached to, we bid a fond farewell to Thornton Hall Hotel over a tasty breakfast. You may know Thornton Hall best for its architecture, its attractive settings and its popularity as a wedding venue, but this charming hotel has much more to offer. If you’re in need of some rest and relaxation and crave a mini-break which doesn’t entail a big drive, we’d heartily recommend this local gem.

A LAKESIDE RETREAT THIS COMFORTABLE AND COSY HOTEL IS WONDERFULLY LOCATED, NESTLING IN THE SWEEPING HILLS OF THE NORTH LAKES JUST A FEW MINUTES FROM THE NOTABLE CUMBRIAN TOWN OF KESWICK. WORDS: James Topping
W
ith easy access from the North West, the Lake District is an understandable favourite with many weary city dwellers, offering the chance to relax, unwind and indulge. It was with this in mind that His & Hers made the scenic journey from Liverpool to Ravenstone Lodge, a converted Victorian coach house and stables. This comfortable and cosy hotel is wonderfully located, nestling in the sweeping hills of the North Lakes just a few minutes from the notable Cumbrian town of Keswick. Once we’d arrived and had enjoyed a brief tour of our spacious room, resplendent with four poster bed, my travel companion and I decided to head down to sample the delights of the comprehensive menu delivered by Head Chef, James Cooper. We decided to take the more relaxed option of dining in the hotel’s Bistro rather than the more formal restaurant. The Bistro, which occupies the formal stables, comes complete with a well stocked bar, showcasing the very best Lakeland brews and providing a selection of whiskies which one would be hard pressed to match in the Highlands of Scotland.
48
Determined to take full advantage of the high quality comfort food on offer, I started by ordering the roasted parsnip soup. Satisfyingly thick and perfectly seasoned, it was easy to see how Ravenstone Lodge had been awarded its AA Rosette for culinary excellence. After my companion’s starter had also received the thumbs up, we moved on to the main course. The 10 oz Rib-Eye steak with all the trimings was a joy, cooked to perfection and a great example of both owner Mike Cornish’s and Chef James Cooper’s commitment to sourcing high quality local produce. A quick glance across the table showed how a simple favourite like fish and chips, in the right hands, can be elevated to a dish of complex taste and texture. A perfect chocolate tarte completed the meal, the rich velvet texture and sharp chocolate taste of the tarte proved to be a fitting finale to an indulgent comfort filled high quality feast. Having put the world to rights in the company of owner Mike, whose passion and commitment shine through the whole Ravenstone experience, we decide to retire, drink in hand, to the Conservatory. A drink or two later and with the comforting warmth of the log burning stove, the stresses of daily life become a distant memory. Once refreshed after a night in our room’s imposing four poster bed, we make our way to the hotel’s restaurant, ready to plan our day exploring the attractions of Keswick and the North Lakes. Faced with an impressive selection of breakfast options, from the classic full English to hand baked pastries and Eggs Benedict, my companion and I took some time to take in the breathtaking views on offer from our window-side table. A perfect start to any day. With a resigned sigh and heavy heart we left this oasis of comfort and calm and ventured back to the car and a day of exploring, sure that Ravenstone Lodge had taken its place on our list of favourite Lakeland getaways.

CASS ART COMES TO LIVERPOOL
THIS SPRING, CASS ART WELCOMED THE FIRST CUSTOMERS AT THEIR NEWEST CASS ART STORE NEAR THE BLUECOAT, LIVERPOOL’S CREATIVE HUB.
H
is & Hers spoke to Cass Art CEO and founder, Peter Cass, in the days before he opened his first Liverpool store. Peter, who opened the first Cass Art shop next to the National Gallery in 1984, said he was as passionate as ever about filling this country with artists.
Peter said: “This is our third store outside of London and we’re very excited. Our manifesto is: ‘Let’s fill this town with artist’, which is perfect for a creative city like Liverpool. We want to encourage people to take time for themselves, offering workshops and encouragement. We’ll be running offers in association with the Tate and want to become a part of the local community.”
Upon hearing that the interview was for our 30th edition, Peter declared: “We were 30 last year. We know what it’s like to be 30!”
With a family with strong ties with the arts (Wilfred Cass collected Henry Moores and was famed for his influence on the arts world), Peter is proud that Cass Art has remained an independent family business.
Peter explained that although Cass Art is now firmly established in London, he’d been itching to bring his art stores to other cities, adding: “Our customers were starting to get frustrated with us outside the capital. We want to have shops within all the student towns and we’re very excited about opening in Liverpool. We’re an urban brand and we appeal to all age groups.” Offering artist quality, student quality and affordable quality products, Cass Art stock 6,000 different lines, all of which are keenly priced.
50
Cass Art can be found next to the Bluecoat, where they’ve taken over the former Cath Kidston store. Offering an impressive array of arts products, all of which have been immaculately displayed, you’ll also find a friendly team who are at pains to emphasise that the store isn’t just for artists – they want to encourage everyone to get involved. As Peter says farewell, he has a few final words of advice: “You don’t have to be the best artist in the world – just doodle – have fun with it!” His & Hers will be digging out our arts kit and doing just that!

Marco Pierre White is an internationally-renowned chef, with restaurants across the North West, including Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill in Liverpool’s Hotel Indigo, and at DoubleTree by Hilton Chester, plus Marco’s New York Italian in Hoylake. Here he gives us his unique slant on all things food.
I
don’t know about you, but I am already thinking about spring and summer. We have ploughed through the winter months, and now there is light in sight. The days are getting longer, and as the seasons change my thoughts automatically turn to new flavours, new ingredients and new culinary creations to share with my guests. There is most certainly a fresh, new feeling in the air… and in my kitchen as well! Easter is of course on the horizon, and a blissful time of year to be spent with family and friends. The four-day weekend certainly helps with that. With that in mind, my menus will incorporate meats and greens true to the season. And of course, chocolate will feature heavily as is the tradition at this time of year. Speaking of tradition, I always take great pleasure walking into my restaurants and seeing that most quintessential of English customs being adhered to and embraced - the afternoon tea. Whether it’s a group of old friends catching up, or a mother and daughter spending quality time, afternoon tea brings people together, and is the perfect way to lift up an otherwise ordinary afternoon. Sandwiches, cakes and pastries go hand in hand with freshly brewed tea, and it heartens me to see this age-old practice continuing with aplomb. As it is Easter, I would like to share with you two wonderful dessert recipes - Cambridge Burnt Cream and Cream Egg Milkshake, which is a particular hit with the little ones. Have a wondrous Easter everyone
Marco x 54
Cambridge burnt cream INGREDIENTS: 2 PINTS OF DOUBLE CREAM 1 VANILLA POD 12 EGG YOLKS 250G OF CASTER SUGAR METHOD: Pre heat your oven to around 110 degrees celcius Gently heat in a pan the cream and split the vanilla pod. Whisk the eggs and sugar together. Once the cream is warm, gently and slowly pour it over the egg mix while whisking until it forms a pale yellow mixture. Pass through a sieve into a jug then pour into ramekins ready to bake. Place the ramekins in a baking tray and fill the tray with warm water until it reaches half way up the side of the ramekin. Bake for around 45-60 minutes or until the mix has just a slight wobble in the middle. Leave to set overnight in the fridge. Just before serving, dust with sugar until a light caramel forms on the top. Leave for a minute then simply enjoy.
Cream Egg milkshake INGREDIENTS: FRESH WHOLE MILK 25ML OF DOUBLE CREAM 15ML OF BUTTERSCOTCH SAUCE CHOCOLATE SAUCE TO LINE THE GLASS METHOD: Add the milk, cream and butterscotch sauce to a blender with a scoop of ice. Blend for 30 seconds Rotate a sundae glass while pouring in the chocolate sauce to line the inside of the glass with chocolate. Pour in the blended milk mixture and enjoy.

LAS IGUANAS:
LATIN PASSION
WORDS: Jean Hill
T
here’s something about those chilly evenings when icy breezes blast out across the Mersey and whip around the Albert Dock that calls for shelter, warm cosy surroundings and the best of comfort food. On just such an evening we (His & Hers magazine editor Emma wanted to share the pleasure) made our way to Las Iguanas, on the Café Terrace, Liverpool ONE. Perhaps it’s the Latin atmosphere, but our spirits soared as we entered a hot zone, and were warmly welcomed by Alex and Emily (the staff who looked after us). Alex gave us an overview of what the restaurant had to offer, and he recommended a mango and pecan salad, which turned out to be something worth making a fuss about: the candied pecan, balsamic dressing, spinach and rocket with avocado or goat’s cheese is a glorious mix, and might be addictive. Just thinking about it makes me want to go back. My main was Bahia Moqueca: creamy coconut curry with peppers, garlic, sweet plantain, white fish and peeled prawns, that tasted as good as it sounds, and was a very generous portion indeed. A fine blending of flavours, no one ingredient overwhelmed or dominated, it’s a subtle well balanced curry and I loved the fish, and there is a vegetarian version with squash, palm hearts and spinach. Emma chose Chicken Fajitas, cooked in coriander, lime, paprika and cumin, served up with a soured cream sauce, which she heartily recommends. The bread and olives (sides) wholemeal and ciabatta breads and Peruvian olives were ridiculously tasty. It was a totally relaxing and fun evening: exactly what was needed on the night. Las Iguanas offer a gluten free menu, which is useful to know. We recommend you take a look.

A CITY CENTRE JEWEL
F
azenda Rodizio Bar & Grill is already a firm favourite with Liverpool’s discerning meat lovers, but as His & Hers discovered on our recent visit to the Exchange Flags-based restaurant, this city centre jewel offers so much more than the usual rodizio style ‘all you can eat’ experience. Once seated, my dining companion and I were greeted by our friendly and knowledgeable table host who talked us thorough the Fazenda experience. The muted wood interior, luxurious leather seating and subtle lighting lend an air of fine dining which is matched by both the menu and the extensive wine list on offer. As a committed carnivore, I was determined to make the most of working my way through the extensive list of cuts available and chose to forego a trip to the salad bar. The Fillet, Rib-Eye, Lamb and spicy sausage all proved to be highlights, cooked to perfection and packed with flavour. My companion preferred a more sophisticated approach and made excellent use of the vast array of fresh salads, vegetables, hot rice, fish, cheese and breads available to those less keen on the sheer volume of protein on offer on the waiters’ meat laden skewers that make their way around the restaurant. Having relished the main courses, we were treated to desserts of Cannoli, crisp pastry tubes filled with sweet ricotta and a beautifully presented selection of mini Brazilian treats. Both delicious, and a further reminder of Fazenda’s fine dining credentials. After coffees and being further fortified by another drink from the impressively stocked bar, we made our way into the brisk city air, planning a return and knowing that Fazenda stands shoulder to shoulder with the very best dining experiences the city has to offer.

O
nce news of Viva Brazil’s extensive refit and new menu came to our attention, His & Hers were easily persuaded to make the short walk across the city centre to sample the delights of this traditional Brazilian steakhouse. Having undergone a complete £250,000 refurbishment, the impressive interior, complete with new bar and more intimate dining space on the first floor has ensured that the restaurant now looks as good inside as befits its grand outside façade on Castle Street. After being pleasantly struck by the vibrant atmosphere and friendly greeting, we were talked through the menu and the green for more, red to stop card system letting your Passador know when to call a halt to the consumption of the copious amount of food available. Having looked over the impressive selection of salads on offer it was time to enjoy some of the 15 cuts available. Whilst impressed with each of the menu choices, the Sirloin, Rump and Chicken and Bacon were particularly memorable, made even

better by a fine glass of Malbec from further down the South American continent in Argentina. My dining companion chose to make the most of the salad bar and hot dishes available along with some of the new seafood options which have been added to the already extensive menu. The new additions will certainly broaden the appeal of Viva Brazil beyond the city’s dedicated meat lovers. After enjoying the mains we moved onto dessert. The caramel pudding was excellent and the delicious slices of caramelised cinnamon pineapple seemed to balance perfectly with the protein rich main course. Stumbling contentedly back on to Castle Street, we agreed that the refit was indeed money very well spent and that a return visit to Viva Brazil was already on the cards.

ITALIAN DINING
W
WORDS: Jean Hill
e were met by friendly front of house staff, and taken to the bar, to enjoy a glass or two of Prosecco, that set the tone for the evening.
Our table came with an excellent view; the lights flickering and chasing across water are a sight to behold. We inclined towards mains and desserts, but it was all too easy to win us over to Baked Rosemary Focaccia (with olive oil and balsamic vinegar) and olives for starters. Courses arrive seamlessly: it’s a totally relaxing atmosphere, with muted conversations going on at a distance, yet there’s still a connection to people nearby obviously enjoying themselves.
The Seared Tuna Steak (marinated in balsamic and soy) comes with a fennel and orange salad and green gazpacho: and it’s as good as it sounds. The tuna was perfect; hot, moist, with a flaky texture and sharp tangy flavour. My companion chose a classic pizza, loved it, and ate it with unseemly haste. Ginger Pannacotta with Confit Clementine was irresistible. It’s a bubble of wonderful flavours and a perfect aftertaste match for the tuna.

reated for those who like to look their best whatever the occasion, Uptown Funk will be delivering the very latest in couture and celebrity-inspired looks with hair, beauty, nails and brows brought to you by an expert team who have been handpicked to make sure that their customers get that perfectly groomed, complexion-perfecting look nailed. The Uptown Funk Blowdry & Makeup Bar concept has been put together by co-owners, and long time friends Amy Goodwin and Meg Carney. Both have essential experience in the hair and beauty business, and felt that it was time that there was a new type of salon out there: one which encompassed all the best elements of professionalism, sprinkled with a whole heap of fun; both girls will be on hand every day blow-drying and making up clients along with the whole team. Amy says: “Uptown Funk started with our enthusiasm for the business, and one central theme emerged. We have found getting ready for any occasion is just as much fun often as the occasion itself, so we wanted to bring that ‘getting ready’ element to our clients. However, at Uptown Funk, we do all the work, so our clients can have all the fun! We want to make the experience an affordable luxury, too, making it really accessible.” Meg says: “As young entrepreneurs we also wanted to put together an absolutely amazing team, who had that vital industry experience, and enthusiasm for new trends, looks and processes – plus they had to have brilliantly upbeat personalities to fit in with the whole Uptown Funk ethos.” Uptown Funk will open at the end of March and the His & Hers team can’t wait to pay this exciting new beauty business a visit.
