WELCOME

Emma Hill (Editor)

This issue has been created in association with Next and features key pieces for autumn / winter from one of my favourite British retailers. I was proud to join Next Press Officer Rebecca Young, Stylist Bryan Harrop and our fantastic team for the Next fashion shoot at Liverpool’s recently opened Titanic Hotel. I’m very grateful to Rebecca, the staff at the Titanic, Think Publicity and the fantastic His & Hers style team, for making the day of the shoot so much fun and for producing such fantastic pictures (featured from p14). You’ll also find our guide to updating your a/w wardrobe with just four key pieces from Next from p28. It’s also been a real pleasure working with Sarah Williamson and Farrah Karimian from Yves Saint Laurent Beauté on a feature on the brand’s huge fragrance launch, Black Opium (from p8). It was a treat to be one of the first to sample the fragrance and to publish some exclusive behind-the-scenes images of Edie Campbell, one of the brightest lights of the modelling world and the face of the fragrance. Also, no issue of His & Hers Magazine would be complete without a visit to Jo Malone London’s offices. Ever since witnessing the stunning launch of Wood Sage & Sea Salt (which went on sale in September) I’ve been spritzing my work station and copies of the magazine for my favourite people with this beautiful, delicate fragrance (featured on p20) so that I can enjoy it all day long. As ever, thanks are due to Jo Malone London’s UK Communications Coordinator Bianca Iaciofano for all her help with the issue. Thanks are also due to Morecrofts, The House Beauty Spa, Liverpool One Bridewell and Mococo for making this season’s His & Hers Magazine reader evenings possible and to all of you who’ve attended. We’ll be back soon with the Christmas Issue. Until then, stay toasty and well!

E

very generation has its signature fragrance, from Calvin Klein’s Eternity in the 1990s to the ‘power fragrances’ like Dior’s Poison in the 1980s. Some perfumes, like fashions, have their moment and then fade from our memory, but a few, like Yves Saint Laurent’s Opium (which was launched in 1977) endure, lingering softly over our dressing tables and stirring our senses for decades. In September, Black Opium, a more rock and roll interpretation of the classic Opium, went on sale. Notes of coffee, complemented by a hint of orange blossom and vanilla, make the sweet, heady fragrance easy to warm to. However, as the name suggests, Black Opium isn’t all sweetness and light. You just have to look at the bottle’s granite-like finish and the stunning advertisements for the fragrance, featuring internationally renowned model, Edie Campbell, to see that this is a perfume with attitude. Yves Saint Laurent Ambassador for Black Opium, Edie Campbell, commented: “YSL has the best of that old Parisian world but without being conservative. The brand’s modern vision of beauty is very inspiring. “As an ambassadress, you have to only take on that role if you really believe in the brand or product and what they do. You have to be the living embodiment of all the intangible things the brand stands for. This unique style at Yves Saint Laurent Beauté between elegance and freedom but also this strong spirit of subversion. “When chosen to be the face of the new YSL Black Opium fragrance, I felt flattered... A little bit of trepidation too. Hopeful that I could do the brand justice. I was honoured to be associated with La Maison of Monsieur Saint Laurent who was a visionary. His modern vision of couture, beauty and woman still has an incredible resonance today.”

EDIE CAMPBELL’S VIEW OF BLACK OPIUM: “For me, fragrance should be almost unnoticeable on people like a quiet hum in the background. With some people, fragrance becomes irreversibly intertwined with their identity, and can ever more be used to represent them, so it’s quite powerful. It can be a person’s presence in their absence. “My favourite scent is the smell of horses and cut grass. And then the scents that I associate with my family and friends. “Black Opium seems strangely familiar to me, which is really important, I think. It doesn’t seem alien or overpowering, it has a bit more subtlety, which is nice. I like the unique contrast in Black Opium, the subtle combination between the bitterness of coffee bean and the sweetness of vanilla.” “We shot the Black Opium campaign in Shanghai. It was my first time there and was amazing, we shot in some great places, and it was so nice to see the city by night! Running through the streets at 4am as the first few people were starting to wake and leave their houses was memorable. From dusk till dawn! All the locations were visually very powerful, so I have some amazing scenes stamped into my mind’s eye! Like the amazing Bund Sightseeing Tunnel where we shot.” His & Hers Magazine was given a sneak preview of Black Opium at the Harvey Nichols Beauty Bazaar, Liverpool ONE. The fragrance is also available on Yves Saint Laurent counters nationwide with a RRP of £44 for 30ml, £62 for 50ml and £81 for 90ml.

GET THE LOOK: HOW TO CHANNEL EDIE CAMPBELL’S ROCK CHICK LOOK FOR YSL FRED LETAILLEUR, YSL BEAUTÉ MAKEUP ARTIST FOR NORTHERN EUROPE, SHARES HIS TIPS FOR RECREATING EDIE CAMPBELL’S MAKE-UP LOOK FOR THE BLACK OPIUM LAUNCH. n order to recreate the Rock Chick look as created by Lloyd Simmonds on Edie Campbell for Black Opium, prepare the skin with one drop of YSL Forever Youth Liberator Serum in order to smooth, plump and hydrate.

I

Use the two top colours from the Couture Palette Collector Fetiche and layer it over for added definition.

Next, follow with a light layer of Fusion Foundation for an invisible velvet matte result, applied with a foundation brush as a base then a slightly darker tone such as B50 under the cheek bones and round the nose to contour.

For the lower lash line, first apply a Black Dessin du Regard eye pencil in Black No. 1 on the inner rim, then with a small eyeshadow brush blend and drag the colour sideways, which will automatically lower the colour to give you that rock chick edge.

Add Touche Éclat around the eyes to remove signs of fatigue and on the top of the cheekbones to uplift and then blend with a foundation brush.

Coat the lashes from root to tip with several layers of False Lash Effect Baby Doll 5 Rock Ultra Noir for a black intensity that provides perfect lash definition and intensity.

For a smoother result, finish with a polishing brush using round movements to perfectly blend to the skin. For the eyes, apply a small amount of liquid eyeliner in No.19 Bleu Patine on a small eye shadow brush then bring it towards the upper lashes, blending along with a blending brush before it sets for a smoky, smudged effect. It is an intense shade that gives depth when applied as a liner or simply at the outer corner of the eye.

10

For a more ‘grungy’ look, you can apply a dab of clear Gloss Volupte over the middle of the top lid.

Finally on the lips, over a base of Touche Éclat to neutralise the natural lip colour, then apply Rouge Volupte Sheer Candy No.1 in Coco Givrée to obtain a soft balance to the eye. Don’t forget to finish off with a spritz of Black Opium to truly finish the look!

S

kin Preparation is key. When working with my clients, if I have time I’ll saturate a cotton face mask with MAC Lightful Softening Lotion and let them relax for five or 10 minutes. Softening Lotion is a wonder product; it clarifies, brightens, tightens and hydrates all in one application. After that I’ll mix two drops of an essential oil into a serum, (try MAC CareBlends Essential Oil into Prep and Prime Brightening Serum) and give their face a massage. Modern red carpet skin should be clean, not overloaded with product and powder. My favourite combination is MAC Face and Body Foundation smoothed over the face with fingers and MAC Prolongwear concealer, applied with a wide flat brush where you need extra coverage. These two formulas look like real skin, not foundation, and they’re flexible and longlasting. To avoid getting flashback from camera flashes, avoid foundations that have a high SPF. Powder is very important on the red carpet, but the key to avoiding an Angela Jolie situation, while keeping the skin looking dimensional, is to pick the right powder formula. Avoid ‘brightening’ powders as they can flash up bright white under hard flash light. My top pick for red carpet situations is MAC Careblend powder. It’s a smoothing, hydrating powder that mattifies but doesn’t flatten the skin. Be strategic when choosing where to place powder – it should go in the middle of the forehead, sides of the nose, and on the cheeks directly under the eyes. Create a modern version of a contour by adding a glowy highlight to the tops of the cheekbones, MAC Pearl Cream Colour Base if best for this, and mattify directly under the cheekbone with powder. The most beautiful looks are often the simplest. I try and make my celebrity clients look like a more polished version of themselves, rather than piling on the makeup. A smoky eye doesn’t need to be heavy or dark. I often just use a kohl pencil (MAC Coffee

Eye Pencil is a beautiful rich brown that brings out blue and green eyes) and a slim pencil brush, like the MAC 219, to blend colour around the lash lines, taking care to push product right into the roots of the lashes. Finishing up with a scattering of individual false lashes, I like to use a mixture of lengths for the most natural look, and add two coats of MAC Studio Sculpt Lash mascara. Spending time on the red carpet means lots of talking and air-kissing! Make your lipstick last, no matter what colour you choose: Prep lips with MAC Prep and Prime Lip and fill the whole lip in with a lip pencil that matches your natural lip colour. Paint on one coat of your chosen lipstick colour, blot that with a tissue and add a light dusting of translucent powder. Then add a final coat of your lipstick. The natural lip pencil underneath gives your lipstick something to hold onto and prevents your lipstick from fading out into just a lip line.

Rebecca Butterworth’s must-buys for late summer: Tiny things! I love travel sizes. I’m a compulsive overpacker so anything that’s travel size helps me out (although often it just means I pack twice as much!) MAC has packed their favourite skincare, lipglasses, mascaras and pigments into small sizes so you can minimise your holiday make up bag! Multi-use products like cream bronzers and blushers that you can use on eyes cheeks and lips. I love Ladyblush Blushcreme and the new MAC BB Bronzing Compacts for quick, creamy, glowy skin. A great humidity-resistant mascara, Mineralise Multi Effect Lash defines, volumises and stays put. Fix+ spray is a must-have for the summer. This lightweight spray refreshes, hydrates and cools skin. Spritz it on and buff it in with a 187 brush to revive your end of the day foundation. This gives a great base upon which to re-apply make-up.

BE TRANSPORTED TO THE ENGLISH SEASIDE WITH

WOOD SAGE & SEA SALT WORDS: Emma Hill

THIS AUTUMN, JO MALONE LONDON PRESENTS WOOD SAGE & SEA SALT, A FRAGRANCE INSPIRED BY THE FRESH AIR BEARING THE FAINT SCENT OF SEA SPRAY WE EXPERIENCE ON THE ENGLISH COASTLINE.

W

hen asked to describe your favourite fragrances, your first thoughts may be of freshly cut grass, or flowers from the garden, or perhaps aromas from the kitchen like freshly ground coffee, vanilla or baking bread. You probably wouldn’t mention the freshest of sea breezes that fills your lungs as sea spray oh so gently dapples your skin. Fortunately, the master perfumers at Jo Malone London have never been afraid to deviate from the obvious. You only have to look at the enormous success of scents like Earl Grey & Cucumber to see the brand’s willingness to experiment and their customers’ desire to be surprised by subtle, sophisticated fragrances with unusual origins. Master Perfumer, Christine Nagel, commented: “For me this fragrance is different. The sea air mixes with salty spray and the mineral texture of sand and rock. Like the scent of driftwood, it has a natural and fresh sophistication. A complex combination of wood and the sea at its core. The feeling is of free-spirited liberty and joy.” To celebrate the launch of Wood Sage & Sea Salt, which went on sale in September, Jo Malone London invited the world’s press to their stunning Georgian headquarters in the heart of London.

20

HIS&HERS LUXURY

Jo Malone London’s Sea Salt & Wood Sage fragrance is available nationwide & through the Jo Malone London website. Cologne: £40 for 30ml or £82 for 100ml, Body Creme, £50, Home Candle, £40, www.jomalone.co.uk

Every room had been transformed to pay homage to the most beautiful aspects of the English coastline and journalists gathered en masse to admire features like the full-size boat and beach hut. The brand is renowned for launching new fragrances in style, so it came as no surprise that the press launch was visually stunning. However, of course it’s the scent itself that counts and Wood Sage & Sea Salt which evokes the aroma of sea spray, driftwood and as impossible as this may sound, fresh ocean breezes, is something very special. Christine Nagel said: “When I received this brief I knew it was something unusual; another great challenge. I was given some photographs of the English coast and old postcards to look at with rugged cliffs and moody skies. It was sepia photography and the colour was very emotive. “When I looked at these pictures I instantly felt the sensation of sea spray, romantic but natural. I loved the concept straight away because it was so different. The brief was for a mineral scent rather than an aquatic, which is the normal approach to a fragrance inspired by the sea.” Christine added: “The Jo Malone London Studio took me to the English coast in March 2012, off season. It was a cold, foggy day and I could smell the sea spray and hear the sounds of the waves crashing against the cliffs.

22

HIS&HERS LUXURY There were different herbs growing and pieces of driftwood, an interesting source of inspiration too. I could taste the sea salt, see the long grasses and driftwood on the beach; this was the start of the story for me. “The salt element was a key departure. The salty taste sensation is very familiar to us all, but in a perfume it has to be more subtle. A salty aroma doesn’t usually work in perfumery, so I had to use a different ingredient to achieve it. I enjoyed mixing the salty element with the mineral one; this was the challenge. The mineral aspect is another texture that’s unexpected and unusual. The other important element was the sage. This is also rare in perfumery and here it makes up part of the woody element of the fragrance. It’s normally found in aromatic fragrances but sage in a woody fragrance creates interest and adds sensuality. “In general in top notes citrus notes are most often used to add freshness to a fragrance. For this one, however, I used rare ambrette seed, from a plant in the hibiscus family. This is a very expensive raw material that gives texture while still being fresh. It is enveloping and cocooning. A touch of buchu leaves adds another unexpected twist. Very simple, very chic. I also added a trace of dried fruit accord in the heart of the fragrance to complement the sea salt and mineral accords.

Plum gives a sensation of comfort and softens the fragrance. Dried fruit is important for the blend too; it is textural. “The base notes contain the sage, as well as guaiacwood which is textured and sensual. On my travels I saw a lot of driftwood on the beaches; when you smell the wood, it is extremely sophisticated. The complex combination of the wood and the sea is at the core. There is a trace of musk as well, a signature for me, which adds volume.” Christine concluded: “I think it’s new and different. It is interesting because the scent works for both men and women. It has masculine attributes but also has a very soft and feminine side. These two characteristics are apparent in the sage, too. I love the ambiguity.”

MATT & JAYNE’S MUST-HAVES JAYNE’S OBSESSIONS: The hubby jetted of to LA for E3 (the Electronic Entertainment Expo) this summer, so as you can imagine our lives have been filled with all things gaming, so here’s my guide to survive the gaming other half!

Jayne Mahon

My motto is if you can’t beat ‘em join ‘em. I’m sure many readers have experienced being bored by the latest shoot ‘em up, so here’s the best way around it. Simply get your manicured mitts on a Nintendo Wii U, and here’s why. The Wii Fit U is more than amazing - it holds your hand while you’re getting fit, with a gym community where you can share your achievements. To personalise training, customise your workout and get workout recommendations based on your goals and preferences. Plus the bright sparks at Nintendo have ensured that if someone else is using the TV it’s not a problem as you can use the game pad to do all of your routines from. So why not dip your toes into the world of gaming you never know, you might be pleasantly surprised. OK, so this is the geeky addition from me: I’m so excited about the upcoming new Star Wars film, starring original cast members such as Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher plus women of the moment, Oscar winner Luptia Nyong’o and Games of Thrones’ Gwendoline Christie, that I’m already rocking a pair of Star Wars Vans of the Storm Trooper variety. And last but not least, my must-have book is by Jeremy Bushnell. It’s called The Weirdness. It’s bizarre, hilarious and thoughtful and one of the most unique and intriguing stories I’ve ever read, so if you fancy a different kind of read on your holidays, why not give The Weirdness a go?

26

HIS&HERS ENTERTAINMENT

HUSBAND AND WIFE TEAM TV PRESENTER MATT LITTLER AND ANDREW COLLINGE ART DIRECTOR JAYNE MAHON SHARE THEIR AUTUMN OBSESSIONS. MATT’S OBSESSIONS: As the good lady said, I’ve been to E3 (which stands for Electronic Entertainment Expo, non gamers!) and I saw some things, some beautiful, beautiful things... Assassins Creed Unity Many of the biggest E3 happenings take place behind closed doors in dark rooms, and this was where I was ushered to take a look at the latest ‘Creed’. This time we’re off to Paris during the revolution, and we can bring friends! Yes, this time co-op is the name of the game, and you and three mates can traverse a beautifully realised Paris and assassinate minor nobles to your heart’s content. Actually, this is another unique aspect of the game; for the first time, Paris has been rendered in a 1:1 aspect, taking the level of detail up to mind blowing levels. Add to that up to 10,000 rioting Frenchmen on screen at once and we are looking at a rather special title. ‘Creed’ is back!

Matt Littler

Evolve Evolve won game of the show, a title not easily earned. The basic premise is that it’s 4 Vs 1. The team of four are hunters, tasked with taking down one massive hulking behemoth monster (played by the one) that constantly ‘evolves’ throughout the match, getting stronger and gaining more abilities the longer the hunters take to take it down. The gameplay is fast and frenetic, and feels a bit more PC than console, but for an online funfest this one delivers. Star Wars So DICE, AKA the guys that make Battlefield, have finally announced that they’re working on the Star Wars game we all deserve. This time next year we should all be knee deep in snow on Hoth, or wading through the swamps of Degoba pulling off head shots and riding speeder bikes. And it looks like DICE could just pull it off. Let’s be honest it’s the Holy Grail of gaming, I’ve got everything crossed. Please be good!

LYNDA LA PLANTE WAS GUEST AUTHOR AT THE HOUSE BEAUTY SPA BOOK CLUB WORDS: Jean Hill

A

ward-winning screen writer and bestselling author, Lynda La Plante CBE, was the guest of honour at The House Beauty Spa Book Club. Liverpoolborn Lynda, who is best known for writing the hugely popular television series, Prime Suspect, talked about her career and her new book, ‘Twisted’, at The Marquee at Liverpool Cricket Club. The money raised from the event went towards Variety, which helps sick, disabled and disadvantaged children on Merseyside. Lynda is one of the most successful crime writers in the UK, and she’s a local legend.

34

Lynda won a place at The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, straight from school, and her breakthrough came in 1983 with the television series ‘Widows’. In 1990 Linda started work on writing Prime Suspect, with the iconic character: Helen Mirren’s Detective Jane Tennison. Lynda has announced plans to write a prequel to the Prime Suspect series. She was asked why Jane Tennison was so tough and so cynical, and that set off a train of thought about the character’s formative years. After a delicious two course meal, there was a question and answer session with Lynda, who was

brilliantly entertaining. Her antics on stage, when she auditioned for Brian Rix’s Farces made me laugh out loud. She’d exited left instead of right, got hopelessly lost underneath the stage, reappeared on stage during someone else’s audition, full of apologies spluttered in a less than polished accent, that earned her the part of a maid, which was the high point of her career, as far as her parents were concerned. Discovering her 11 year old son with a copy of Prime Suspect, she questioned its suitability, to which he replied: “I’m not reading it, I’m selling it”. Lynda La Plante’s ‘Twisted’ is published in hardback priced £15.

artina discussed her latest novel, Revenge, which went straight to number one on hardback publication, scoring the author her 11th original fiction number one in a row. Martina Cole first made headlines in 1992, when her debut novel Dangerous Lady was bought by Headline, for a then recordbreaking advance and became an instant bestseller. Margaret Harry, of The House Beauty Spa, said: “We were so excited to bring Martina Cole to Yacht Club Liverpool, for our book club event. The House Beauty Spa Book Club has seen

some iconic authors over the last two years and has raised so far an impressive £6,300 for Variety, The Children’s Charity.” Martina Cole is a one of the UK’s most successful crime writers. She continues to smash sales records with each of her books, which have sold in excess of 11 million copies in total. In 2011 Martina surpassed the £50 million sales mark since records began in 1998 and was the first British female novelist for adult audiences to achieve this. Several of Martina’s novels have been adapted for the screen such as The Take and The Runaway, which were shown on Sky One to remarkable reviews.

In addition, Two Women, Dangerous Lady and The Graft have been adapted for the stage. Guests were treated to a delicious two course meal at the Yacht Club, two free drinks and a signed copy of Martina’s latest book, plus a question and answer session.

Coffee is just as distinctive and at Joe Black Coffee we encourage our clients to tour the roastery, taste different beans and choose a signature flavour that suits them and their customers.” www.joeblackcoffeeandtea.co.uk

With a dedication to raising awareness and campaigning for equal education rights for all, Malala also took the opportunity to appeal for gender equality. Speaking at World Merit Day, ‘What Matters?’ Conference and Concert, Malala said: “Education can be the change. In the past, the Masai tribe would make men warriors if they killed a lion. Pure & Pose was chosen as one of the sponsors of London Fashion Week where models fluttered their Pure & Pose lashes as they took to the catwalk. Find out more about the Pure & Pose phenomenon from p46.

RHS Flower Show Tatton featured an array of inspiring and unforgettable show gardens inspired by the elements, and embraced a carnival theme. Sam Ovens, awarded young designer of the year at Tatton, created the sublime, yet essentially simple ‘Sky is the Limit’ show garden. Alex Schofield won silver gilt for his ‘Prehistoric Modernism’, floating grasses and wonderful Perspex frames to shift the perception of colour palettes. There was an allotment garden where everything had been grown from seed. His & Hers’ favourites were: ‘A Taste of Wythenshawe’, a table top water feature (and designer hen house) fashioned and built by Reaseheath College foundation degree students, and the Writers’ Garden created by the pupils from Oaklands School. We discovered the Blackden Trust and the Old Medicine House where a beautiful herb garden has been created. There are always fresh discoveries alongside anticipated pleasures at Tatton.

GETTING

FIERCE & FABULOUS AT PAN AM

FIERCE AND FABULOUS IS THE ONLY WAY TO DESCRIBE THE ‘CRAZY RIGHT NOW’ EVENING HELD AT PAN AM RECENTLY. WORDS: Michelle Rushton

T

he dancing was certainly fierce and the cuisine was nothing short of fabulous! The whole night, hosted by glamorous Albert Dock bar and restaurant, Pan Am, was devoted to Beyoncé. Big fans of the Queen of Pop, my partner Mike and I escaped from the children for a night of pure indulgence – dinner and dancing? What’s not to like? We were shown to our table upstairs, where we had the best seats in the house, overlooking the stage below which was soon to be graced by MD Productions’ ultra talented team of dancers. We sipped a glass of fizz whilst perusing the set menu which although short, was definitely sweet, managing to capture most of our favourite dishes on just one page!

42

Then we sat back and enjoyed our sumptuous starters of Stilton and spring onion tart with confit pear and balsamic onions and smoked mackerel fillet accompanied by toasted sour dough bread, red onion and sherry chutney. I made light work of the tasty tart while Mike, a keen fisherman, said the mackerel was “spot on”. Pretty soon, the venue started to throb with the sound of soul, hip hop, R&B and funk, while the MD dancers set the stage on fire, perfectly capturing the essence of the AfroAmerican artist with her strong, sexy, empowering moves. The choreography by creative director, Miguel Doforo, was inspired with plenty of “hairography” and the dancers dazzled diners with their raw energy, glitzy costumes and breathtaking talent. In between dances, diners were serenaded by a gorgeous female duo. Meanwhile, Mike and I were salivated at the prospect of our main courses. We had both opted for the 8oz ribeye steak with hand cut chips, green beans, garlic and herb butter and roasted tomato. It did not disappoint, the steak cooked to perfection, medium rare with arguably the best chunky chips in town. For the finale, we feasted on milk chocolate and Baileys cheesecake and raspberry pavlova which were both absolutely divine and a perfect way to round off a great evening. ‘Crazy Right Now’ will be the first in a series of monthly events by MD Productions which will take place at Pan Am at the end of every month.

THE AMERICAN DREAM

S

tudying literary classic The Great Gatsby for our A-Level English many moons ago, my best friend Nikki and I were fascinated by the famous novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald and his portrait of the Jazz Age. So with us both having ‘special birthdays’ this year, a nostalgic Night with Gatsby at Pan Am seemed a most fitting and glamorous way to celebrate! As we arrived at the Albert Dock bar and restaurant, it was like stepping back in time as we were greeted by the stylish staff who were dressed most elegantly with a nod to the Roaring Twenties who showed us to best seats in the house which had been transformed with such opulence, it wouldn’t have looked out of place in Gatsby’s West Egg mansion. Our tickets, priced £30 per head, entitled us to a three course meal and entertainment by Liverpool dance troupe MD Productions. We perused the menu, which aimed to re-create the tastes of the roaring 1920s, using the ingredients the great Gatsby himself used, to charm his peers during this time. We indulged ourselves with Manchego cheese and Serrano ham croquettes served with spicy tomato salsa and Waldorf kale salad with chopped apples,

44

walnuts, celery and kale coated in mayonnaise – absolutely delicious. Next, I enjoyed a succulent sirloin steak rubbed with rosemary, accompanied by baked fondant potato, fine beans and bordelaise sauce. Meanwhile, my dinner date, Nikki, opted for artichoke and spinach stuffed mushrooms with fried scallop potatoes and chive cream sauce. Our decadent desserts didn’t last long – Daisy’s lemon cake featured yummy citrus frosting and the Pots de crème (chocolate custard with a dash of espresso, fresh whipped cream, mint and chocolate sticks) were just to die for! Pleasantly satisfied, we sat back and enjoyed a cocktail while MD Productions worked their magic. The talented team delivered a powerful performance with dazzling 1920s costumes, buckets of energy, amazing dance moves, stunning vocals and plenty of pizzazz. Overall it was a superb evening with excellent food, great entertainment and the perfect chance to reminisce with an old friend.

WOMEN’S BEAUTY

EVERGREEN HELPS CLIENTS SHED THE YEARS AND THE INCHES

Known as the ‘miracle facelift’, OmniFace can lift and tighten ageing skin on the face, neck and arms. LumiSlim Titan is a laser lipo therapy, which is highly effective at reducing fat tissue in localised areas of the body. The aesthetic clinic, sister company to Woodlands Beauty Spa, has been providing anti-ageing and aesthetic treatments for almost eight years and the lead practitioner at Evergreen, Belinda Done, is a qualified nurse with 15 years of experience in aesthetics. Belinda is highly respected within the industry and was the first nurse in the country to be trained in the new Thread Lift procedure, which is becoming an incredibly popular treatment in the UK. OmniFace is a fractional radio frequency facelift. Upon receiving the treatment, immediate improvements to the skin are visible, as radio frequency waves penetrate into the deeper layers of the dermis, stimulating new collagen production and causing a tightening effect. OmniFace also resurfaces the upper layers of the skin, minimising fine lines and improving the overall tone and texture, the results of which develop in the weeks that follow. LumiSlim Titan is an advanced form of ‘laser lipo’. The laser penetrates into fat cells, causing a chemical change in the membrane of the cell, which allows the contents of affected cells to be expelled by the body as waste, reducing fat tissue in the areas targeted.

EVERGREEN CLINIC, BASED IN THE BEAUTIFUL, LEAFY LIVERPOOL SUBURB OF AIGBURTH, HAS BECOME THE FIRST PLACE IN THE CITY TO OFFER OMNIFACE AND LUMISLIM TITAN AESTHETIC THERAPIES OR, IN OTHER WORDS, SURGERY-FREE FACE LIFTS AND FAT REDUCTION.

As well as inch loss and an improvement in the appearance of cellulite, the treatment also results in an improved texture to the skin alongside a number of other benefits. Now that’s what we call the science of beauty and we like the sound of it!

HIS&HERS TRAVEL

HIS & HERS’

LONDON HIGHLIGHTS

THIS SUMMER, HIS & HERS VISITED THE CAPITAL FOR THE CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW. HERE ARE OUR LONDON HIGHLIGHTS. WORDS: Jean Hill

HOW WE TRAVELLED: VIRGIN, FIRST CLASS SERVICE His & Hers had a challenging itinerary of places to go and people to see in London. For me, train journeys, more so than any other mode of travel, mean adventure. Virgin First Class means travelling in style, with complimentary food and drink, Wi Fi, and weekday papers. We loved the feeling of relaxation, but it didn’t detract from the sense of setting off on an exciting venture. London from Liverpool used to be an epic journey, but Virgin trains have changed all of that, and it is now possible to be in London in less than two and a half hours, on the fastest trains. The service is awesome. A friend was travelling in the same carriage

48

as a family who had totally misjudged the time it would take to get to Heathrow Airport, and were panicking about being late for check-in. A Virgin steward sat down with the family, and worked out a route for them, to save time crossing London, that would make their journey feasible within the timescale. That’s impressive. His & Hers travelled by Pendolino, which is very speedy; we sat back in comfort whilst the world flew by. In First Class, snacks are complimentary: breakfast is served up until 9.59am and includes a great British breakfast, or a vegetarian option, with toast, croissants or muffins and Fairtrade tea/coffee. The evening meal includes two hot seasonal options (including vegetarian) or you can opt for a very tasty sandwich.

We were delighted to discover that we could upgrade to First Class from just £10 each way on weekends or UK bank holidays, which means access to that renowned service. His & Hers are casting around for another reason to travel Virgin. We loved it; we arrived one minute early, refreshed and ready to tackle the hectic schedule.

www.virgintrains.co.uk WHERE WE STAYED: SOFITEL, ST. JAMES Sofitel Hotel, St James was the ideal location to get out and about in central London; Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square, and the museums, theatres and shops of Regent, Piccadilly, Oxford, Bond Street and the Savoy are all within walking distance. I strolled through the early morning sunshine to arrive at the Chelsea Flower Show bright and early attended by bird song. The Sofitel is neoclassical (the intersection of past and present): it’s a luxurious 5-star hotel, French in design with more than a hint of English tradition. The foyer is cool marble, whilst the hotel undeniably radiates classical elegance, with shades of old gold, it’s a warm friendly meeting, greeting, and eating place. The staff were welcoming and helpful throughout my stay: the manager was impressively efficient and charming. Spectacular orchids and peonies take pride of place in the reception area. The bedroom was spacious and there was nothing that I lacked to make this a great stay. You can linger at the bar, dine at The Balcon, where food is served in style. Sadly I didn’t have time for the So SPA’s rejuvenating treatments, but it’s one of many reasons to go back. Chelsea afternoon tea was on offer in The Sofitel’s Rose Lounge: sumptuous rose and cream décor complete with gorgeous, fragrant roses. It’s highly civilized and given a decidedly French touch, with a delicious tray of Parisienne pastries. There’s the gentle sound of a harp, akin to the soothing lapping of gentle waves, whilst you sip Champagne or devour a cocktail, and ponder over a collection of exclusive teas, wonderful bite size sandwiches: smoked salmon, ham and Emmental cheese, and scones with clotted cream. There are 183 rooms including 18 suites, and it’s a wonderfully relaxing, luxurious place to stay, in the heart of a vibrant, exciting capital city.

HIS&HERS TRAVEL

THE SAVOY, SEAFOOD BAR AND GRILL His & Hers had an invitation to dine at Kaspar’s Seafood Bar and Grill at the Savoy, and as we walked through London’s sunlit streets, excitement was in the air. It was a very big deal indeed! Kaspar’s is steeped in old school elegance and charm: we chose a table where we had a view of the Thames as the sun was going down and shadows played across the water. It’s classic art deco design, and a homage to the ‘roaring twenties’ with cut-glass mirroring, silver leaf ceilings and a chequer-board marble floor that frames a central circular bar flanked by Murano glass columns and, rather showy pendant glass light fittings. Pretty damned impressive. The seating is both elegant and designed for comfort. The Manager, wanting to offer a really special experience, proposed a tasting menu of his choice, and we had the services of a charming sommelier, and Christine, who had a wealth of knowledge about fine dining that she was willing to share, and guided us through each instalment of our epic meal (and provided some culinary tips along the way). We started with an awesome selection from the ‘fruits de mer platter’: oysters, poached prawns, Gravlax, and citrus cured wild sea bass (the fish is of such fine texture and flavour). The Chablis ‘Carre de Cesar’ light, tasting of vanilla, melon and apple was perfect to bring out all the flavour of the lightly grilled scallops, my companion’s favourite, that followed. If I would sacrifice anything from the menu, it would be snails in garlic. They’re really slow cooked and tender, but it’s a long time to spend simmering, when there are finer fish to fry or grill.

50

The sea bream, with fennel and orange, was sublime – a subtle sharp tangy flavour. The fillet of beef came accompanied by a beautifully smooth Malbec , rich, plums, earthy taste: the flavour of the almost melt in the mouth beef (it still had a delicious bite), will live in my memory for a long time. I’m reliably informed that the organic spatchcock chicken was wonderfully succulent. It’s often claimed that the sourcing of produce in restaurants is of the highest quality: in the Savoy this is true in spades. Their fish-monger (supplier) is simply and literally the best. The taster menu gave us a whistle stop tour, but it didn’t leave much room for dessert. We paused for breath, and this turned out to be a magical moment. Dessert was to die for: one very talented chef has created a Peach Melba bombe. We gazed in wonder at the rounded confection put before us, and then as hot raspberry sauce was poured over the top, it burst, fizzed and revealed a layer of white chocolate and meringue like substance, which merged with the sunshine zing of the peaches to create an explosion of flavours. It was carefully and painstakingly orchestrated, but it wasn’t done just to impress, though it did. I had the sense that the lovely staff at the Savoy simply wanted us to have a brilliant time and get a taste of the range of foods on the menu: smoked fish, cured fish, salads, curries, Hereford beef, organic chicken, Salt Marsh lamb, Jersey rock oysters, Lobster, Tiramisu, Yoghurt and rhubarb sorbet…I could go on. No we didn’t actually eat everything on the menu! We left on a real high. For sheer performance, presentation, professionalism and pleasure, Kaspar’s is difficult to beat. All this comes at a price, so it’s a very special place for special occasions to make memorable.

day, meant that flowers sparkled in vibrant tones. Despite all the dazzling personalities and dedicated exhibitors enjoying the limelight, it was the stunning flowers, fabulous foliage, and inspired small design details that were the show stealers. There were several themes running through the show: the 100 year anniversary of the 1st World War (bitter rather than sweet, though a traditional vegetable garden – flowers were sacrificed for fruit and vegetables in war-time - was inspiring); wild flowers and hedgerow planting were being celebrated and this was perfectly reflected in the Marks & Spencer Exhibit garden. The centrepiece was a wonderful oversized bouquet encompassed by wild flowers, and I spotted a ‘buzzing bee hive’ amongst the sunflowers, which sent out a powerful message about conservation. There was also a focus on young designers, some gaining Gold, whilst others were learning from veteran exhibitors. My own personal favourite, that won Gold, was Japanese designer Togenkyo’s artisan garden ‘A Touch of Paradise’, because it was an exquisitely planted sanctuary amidst the hustle and bustle. It was a totally fabulous experience.

www.rhs.org.uk

www.fairmont.com RHS CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW It was a perfect summer day; I took an early morning stroll through London, in dappled sunshine, to arrive at RHS Chelsea Flower Show just after the gates opened. There’d already been frantic activity ahead of the dawn chorus: film crews (cumbersome equipment reaching out like octopi’s tentacles), celebrities posing, the press pressing, gardening experts in earnest conversation, those exhibiting (rocking back and forth, looking nervous), and commentators (vying for pole position). I tried to take in Chelsea, in a sweep. It’s like stepping into Wonderland, with a private view of ‘stunning, magical, inspirational gardens’ –all beautifully crafted: one show garden was a homage to the Persian concept of the ‘Paradise Garden’, and almost took my breath away. The fact that the sun shone brightly the whole

What sort of denim brands and savings can you get at McArthurGlen? You can easily create a unique and on-trend look by mixing high end with premium high street and save around 70% on your fashion shopping.

What is your favourite way to style denim? I generally like a casual look, styling my favourite Levi black jeans with biker boots and a studded leather jacket.

Who is your denim icon? It’s got to be James Dean; he is my career icon too. I’d love to recreate the image of James Dean on the motorcycle with a huge collar.

LOOKING BACK ON LIVERPOOL’S

INTERNATIONAL TENNIS TOURNAMENT

H

osted at Liverpool Cricket Club, and sponsored by amongst others Liverpool Hope University, a partner event of the International Festival for Business and supported by Liverpool City Council, the International Tennis Tournament was always going to be spectacular. Adam Franklin and his talented catering team provided the buffet and afternoon tea (the food was suitably special and the service was impeccable). Virginia Wade attended and tennis stars: Marion Bartoli (previous Wimbledon champion), Greg Rusedski, Barry Cowan, and significant others, kept the crowds entertained with great performances. Perfect weather, wonderful company, and a chance to watch recent legends and future greats made this truly memorable. The event was a sell-out, and Anders Borg, organiser and Managing Director of Northern Vision, believes this has almost certainly been the most successful year of the Tournament so far. Official caterers for the Liverpool International Tennis Tournament: Adam Franklin at the Yacht Club.

WHAT’S AT SIXTY TWO

GIVES LIVERPOOL A TASTE OF SOUTHERN SOUL BAR AND RESTAURANT WHAT’S AT SIXTY TWO OPENED ON LIVERPOOL’S CASTLE STREET THIS SUMMER, SERVING UP IMPECCABLY PRESENTED SOUTHERN SOUL FOOD AND DRINKS WORTH SAVOURING.

H

is & Hers Magazine was invited to pay a visit to What’s at Sixty Two shortly after the bar and restaurant’s official opening. We’d heard that the owners of well established restaurant What’s Cooking? had made a substantial investment in What’s at Sixty Two and were keen to experience the self proclaimed ‘soul shack in the business-meets-retail quarter.’ First impressions were excellent. The His & Hers team had always adored the stunning Georgian architecture of 62 Castle Street, but the new owners have made much better use of the available space, adding individual booths which make catching up over drinks or dinner feel like an intimate, elegant occasion, and relocating the bar. The owners say that the interior design was inspired by the grand old mansions of Louisiana and their intent to create a space that feels warm and inviting yet stylish is immediately evident. We ordered a ‘Piggie Smalls’ burger (bursting with barbecued pulled pork, bacon, applewood cheese and avocado) and our dining companion chose a Cobb salad with chargrilled chicken, cos lettuce, avocado, egg, smoked bacon and cheese. Service was friendly and very efficient and What’s at Sixty Two’s clever new layout made our table feel like a nicely tucked away enclave where we could forget about the pressures of the week and catch up on all the news while hearing the very gentle hum of conversation from our fellow diners. His & Hers has returned to What’s at Sixty Two several times since making our first visit for this review, so can say with confidence that whether it’s after-work drinks (which tend to be served with complimentary pretzels – a nice touch!) or the ultimate in southern comfort food, served with a smile, that you crave, you’ll find the warmest of welcomes here.

JAMIE’S ITALIAN,

LIVERPOOL ONE

WORDS: Jean Hill

I

t was Saturday lunch-time, on a bright sunshiny day, and it seemed the perfect time to check out Jamie’s Italian before a fun afternoon shopping in Liverpool ONE, and a wander down to the Tate, Albert Dock. The welcome is warm, the atmosphere is hectic and it’s a work environment; I didn’t see any staff standing still at any point. The restaurant is family friendly and their menu offers fun food for children that is nevertheless entirely healthy. We were incredibly well taken care of by Ana (a member of staff who has been with Jamie’s since day one). Smiling broadly, she explained the philosophy that underpins the way the restaurant is run, and it’s all about chefs with specialist skills, and for the staff, intensive training, learning about Italian food, nutrition and responsible sourcing, and the ability to communicate this every day, which Ana possesses in spades. The starter was delicious: there were sharing planks for two, that include buffalo mozzarella, pecorino, chili jam, and bruschetta, and did I mention the olives on ice that come with the best sun-dried tomatoes I’ve ever tasted (cooked with a hint of chili)! My choice from the mains was seared tuna salad, sustainable yellow-fin tuna served pink, that was a very generous serving, and was both tender and tasty. My companion chose the super-food salad, that includes avocado, asparagus, courgettes, grains, shoots, nuts and seeds, and was lost in wonder that anything that tastes this good could also be (the clue’s in the name) super healthy. Next time I’m going for the posh chips with truffle oil and Parmesan, and the raspberry and chocolate-rippled Pavlova – luckily raspberries are a super-food too. I really enjoyed the whole experience and it was lovely to see very well behaved children having so much fun in a great eating place.

NEW YORK NIGHTS AT FREDERIKS WORDS: Jean Hill

T

he Georgian Quarter is famous for its restaurants, and now there’s a taste of Brooklyn in Hope Street. It felt like an early evening in leafy Greenwich Village, New York, and we were intrigued to find out what was cooking at Frederiks. There’s a chilled out vibe – exposed brick walls and wooden flooring with black and white tiles surrounding the bar, with contemporary muted tones, beautiful ceramic artwork and subdued lighting. It’s an early evening youngish crowd milling around the bar, but there’s a wider age range amongst the diners. It’s a menu to dip into – add the starch once you’ve sorted your starter and mains.

There’s a wealth of options: bar snacks, sliders, plates, meat, pizzetta or seafood. The vegetable soup was homemade, delicious and the vegetables were in season. The pretzel , spiced fried chicken was sharp and succulent. You don’t need to taste strawberry and cinnamon glazed baby-back ribs, to know they’ll be awe-inspiringly good – it’s such a fabulous combination of ingredients. The Maple bacon and Gruyere pizzetta was a superb mix of equally strong flavours: the Gruyere was meltingly creamy. The seafood salt ‘n’ pepper king prawns were huge, spicy and succulent with a wonderful dipping sauce, and the starch element, sweet potato fries, delightful. Just the sound of a hummus, sun-dried tomato sandwich with basil is luring me back. The desserts take the Brooklyn theme to a whole new level: New York baked cheesecake, Bourbon pecan pie, and Guinness and chocolate cake. People were having fun. The bar offers beer on draught, excellent wines, and the cocktails look rather enticing. It’s a friendly informal meeting place, that serves excellent food and it’s a menu you’ll want to dip into time and time again.

A VISIT TO THE ALBERT DOCK’S

GUSTO & SMUGGLERS COVE

HIS & HERS PAID A VISIT TO TWO OF THE ALBERT DOCK’S POPULAR BARS AND RESTAURANTS.

T

he Albert Dock is one of the UK’s most popular tourist attractions. It’s also home to a host of leading bars and restaurants which attract Liverpool residents as well as visitors in droves. This summer, His & Hers couldn’t resist taking a pleasant stroll round the Albert Dock. For those who haven’t visited before, we’d highly recommend it. From the stunning waterfront views to the fantastic architecture, there’s plenty to feast your eyes on. Speaking of feasting, we started our night at the perennially popular Gusto. This Italian restaurant is well loved by residents and tourists alike and service is fast, efficient and friendly. We ordered steak with peppercorn sauce (which appeared to be a popular choice with our fellow diners). Fries were ordered as an added indulgence and after dining like kings, we made our way to the Dock’s newest arrival, Smugglers Cove.

This venue is famous for offering a selection of more than 150 rums, so we couldn’t resist sampling a few of their rum-based cocktails, which were beautifully presented and served with a smile by the attentive team. Most importantly, they tasted great. We concluded our diet-bustingly good evening with two of Smugglers Cove’s delicious sticky toffee puddings, which were served with ice cream. With so many fantastic bars and restaurants on offer at the Albert Dock, we’d recommend allowing a few hours to linger over your food and drinks, perhaps splitting your night between two venues. We’ll certainly be back to trial more Albert Dock combinations soon!

A WARM WELCOME AT

EDINBURGH

H

is & Hers picked up an invitation to lunch at Wedgwood restaurant, Edinburgh, just as I was packing my bags to travel to Helensburgh (outside Glasgow). It meant covering (almost) the width of Scotland, but my companion was willing to travel with me.

leaves and herbs provide a burst of sharpness, but never overwhelm the taste of the meat, vegetables or fish dishes. The Celtic cheese board, with chutney and oatcakes was epic. I’d opted for cheesecake with raspberry compote, but couldn’t resist a taste of the Dunblair blue (undeniably Irish) with a warmth and creaminess that makes it truly memorable.

The outlook was warm and sunny in Edinburgh, and we set off in the direction of the Royal Mile. It’s a magnificent, historic city. First impressions of Wedgwood: a very warm welcome indeed, there’s a sense of laid back elegance, but it’s a cosy, relaxed atmosphere.

The restaurant was almost full to capacity, and there was the buzz of contented conversation all around us; it offers great hospitality, and we loved it.

Fodor’s (one of the largest publishers of English language tourism reviews) has given Wedgwood a Fodor’s Choice Award and it was awarded ‘Restaurant of the Year’ in 2013 by Scottish Licensed Trade News, in the under £35.00 category. We chatted, chose a starter: grilled goats cheese, hazelnut, balsamic and rocket, which was beautifully presented. Although my companion would have welcomed a tad more balsamic, I loved the underlying subtle flavours of garlic, rosemary, and thyme, and the utter creaminess of the goats cheese. My companion chose the lamb burger for mains and was able to state his preference (medium, not too pink) and that is exactly how it came; the French fries were wispy, not totally crispy, but tasted delicious. Foraged foods feature in the menu: salad

A DAY TO REMEMBER AT

HARD DAYS NIGHT WORDS: Jean Hill

W

e are in the Lounge and Bar at Hard Days Night, right at the heart of the hotel; priceless photographs and artwork adorn the walls, capturing a whole era of the Liverpool music scene.

Our tour guide throughout a holiday in Cuba became a friend and on his first trip outside his homeland, he came to Liverpool. He was a lifelong fan of the Beatles and his ‘most memorable moment’ of the entire trip was walking into Hard Days Night to register, and taking in the whole aura and magic of the place. His & Hers were feeling the vibes, and we were spoilt for choice. Should it be afternoon tea, should it be Sunday lunch? It ended up being both, which will come as no surprise to people who know us even slightly. We were shown the impressive range of branded Hard Days Night bottled wines, and settled for opening the delicious Shiraz. The starter was oven roasted mackerel fillet with chorizo and shallot broth. The mackerel had a totally fresh subtle flavour that whetted the appetite exquisitely. The main was Gressingham duck breast, with vanilla potatoes, red cherries and roasted parsnips: the cherries work a subtle magic with the tender pink duck, and the parsnips followed through on the semi-sweet theme, altogether enjoyable, beautifully presented, and priced at £23.95. Afternoon tea was gorgeous. There’s a range of loose leaf teas that include red-berry and rose petals, plus egg and cress and salmon sandwiches and scones and strawberries aplenty. It’s a perfect destination after shopping in the city. Featuring great service, this was a lovely experience and I’d heartily recommend Hard Days Night. I love the fact that the phone number ends in 1964, too!
