WELCOME TO THE SPRING EDITION OF HIS & HERS MAGAZINE. After spending the winter months seeking out the coats, knits, skincare and comfort food worthy of cosying up with, there’s something very refreshing about taking a fresh look at spring’s new fashion and beauty looks (and dreaming of finally leaving the house without a large coat and umbrella!) We’ve embraced the season’s brighter palette in our fashion shoot from p10 and focused on some of spring’s chicest womenswear looks from p32.
Emma Hill (Editor)
We were fortunate enough to be given an interview slot with make-up guru Laura Geller during her visit to the UK from New York. You’ll find her skincare tips and secrets from p8. Our friends at Jo Malone London also provided some new season inspiration when they gave us a sneak preview of their Herb Garden collection (giving us the delicious aroma of freshly grown herbs without the requirement of being green fingered or actually doing any work in the garden), see p22. Special thanks are due to the lovely teams at Next, Clarins, Mococo, Malmaison, John Lewis, Harvey Nichols, Epic, Spire, Cheshire Oaks, Silverberg Opticians, Morecrofts, Fazenda, Emma Bridgewater, the Bierkeller, the Suites Hotel, Oh Me Oh Mama , Hotel Indigo, the House and Tracey Bell to name but a few. You’ve all helped to make this issue a really special one! To celebrate the start of the new season, we’ve featured a few of our favourite Easter offers. You’ll also find some last minute Mother’s Day recommendations, suggestions for the ultimate day at the races and Jennie Blake’s pick of her favourite London hideaways from p62. We’ll be back soon with our summer issue. In the meantime, if you’ve enjoyed this edition, please tweet about it: @HisAndHers_Mag #SpringStyle Wishing you all the joys of spring!

MAKE-UP LEGEND WORDS: Emma Hill
LAURA GELLER
H
aving worked with Hollywood’s biggest names and created memorable make-up looks for Broadway, Laura Geller launched her own make-up range on QVC more than 20 years ago.
Today, her make-up range has a large loyal following and products like Spackle (which first put primer on our radar) and Laura’s perennially popular ‘Baked’ range are top sellers. When asked about her favourite products, Laura said Spackle would always have a special place in her heart, adding: “I think a lot of women still don’t believe they need primer. They don’t want to have to add one more step into their routine. However, applying primer is one of the important stages not to skip. It resurfaces the skin and creates the perfect canvas for your makeup. It also makes your make-up last so much longer so it still looks fresh at the end of a long day.” In terms of other beauty essentials we should make more time for, Laura said blusher can be underestimated, explaining: “Blusher is probably the single most important colour item you can have to give your skin a lift. It’s also really anti-ageing and there’s colour correction in our blushers so you don’t just get a block of colour. Try Blush-N-Brighten for a really easy-to-wear shade which will make you look more youthful and rested.” When asked to choose one more favourite product from her collection, Laura said: “It would have to be Bronze-N-Brighten. This was the first in the ‘Baked’ category and has taken on a life of its own. And, of course, Spackle. I’m so pleased that I’ve introduced so many women to primer with this product.”

JO MALONE LONDON’S
HEAVENLY
HERB GARDEN WORDS: Emma Hill
THIS SUMMER, JO MALONE LONDON INTRODUCES THEIR NEW RANGE INSPIRED BY THE HUMBLE HERB GARDEN.
22
HIS&HERS LUXURY
H
aving reintroduced us to familiar fragrances from our kitchen and garden, such as Earl Grey and Cucumber or English Pear and Freesia, it makes sense that the Jo Malone London team would eventually focus on the scent of the herb garden. Fresh, heady and quintessentially English, this is a collection that you really couldn’t imagine having been created by any other fragrance house. His & Hers was delighted to attend the launch of The Herb Garden, for which the Jo Malone London townhouse had been transformed into part herb garden, part potting shed. We joined the assembled beauty journalists in inhaling each of the new fragrances and despite being gathered in the heart of London, did feel temporarily transported to the countryside. The Jo Malone London team say that the collection represents: “A quirky tapestry of fragrant foliage, entwined with flowers and fruit. Satisfying stems of fresh English lavender. Overflowing pots of spicy nasturtium and leafy clover. Lemon thyme crushed in soil-covered hands. And cool earth encasing ripening carrots and fennel. The aromatic artistry of herbs; verdant, crisp, juicy and sweet. A captivating and delectable collection.”
24
ABOUT THE
COLLECTION SORREL & LEMON THYME The sparkling zest of lemon wakes up a bright bouquet of bigarade and petitgrain, gently exposing the herbaceous heart of sorrel, lemon thyme and rosemary. Beneath, verdant geranium leaves and earthy moss grow complexity at the roots, uplifting the citrus to an elegant finale.
WILD STRAWBERRY & PARSLEY The peppery bite of flat-leaf parsley and tang of tomato leaves mingle with ripe blackcurrant before a delicate note of wild strawberries adds sweetness. Leafy violet springs up through the mossy undergrowth. A green and succulent accord in the air draws you deeper into the garden.
NASTURTIUM & CLOVER Carpets of cool clover cut with peppery rocket get bright and fresh with a complement of sparkling lemon. Nasturtium blooms at the core, entwined with jasmine petals. At its finish, the perennial pleasure of vetiver grounds the fragrance in an addictive warmth.
CARROT BLOSSOM & FENNEL A hybrid of refinement and whimsy, the first impression of just-ripe carrot entwined with fresh fennel immediately hooks with a distinctive twist. Rose and orange flower water bloom brightly with the earthy sweetness of heritage carrot while the floral elegance of iris punctuates an unforgettable finish.
LAVENDER & CORIANDER A garden state of mind takes over the senses when a refreshing blend of English and French lavender opens the aromatic gates with a jumpstart of striking coriander. Earthy sage deepens the scent with a natural woodiness. Finally, the unexpected warmth of tonka bean adds depth and sensual balance to the exquisite richness.
The Herb Garden Collection, featuring 30ml colognes, is available from March. RRP: ÂŁ44 per cologne.

We are smitten with Magic Eye Rescue: A reinvigorating, anti-ageing rescue remedy to slow down the ticking time bomb of age around the eyes, a delicate part of the skin which needs special care and attention. BEAUTYBAR BY CLARINS
WORDS: Jennie Blake
THE STYLISH LITTLE SISTER TO CLARINS SKIN SPA
S
haring the same devotion as the rest of the His & Hers team towards Clarins’ luxurious and super-effective skincare products, my love affair with the brand grew even more so after a turbo charged, relaxing beauty-boosting treatment at John Lewis Liverpool’s new Clarins’ BeautyBAR.
using eye contour gel and eye contour balm, along with more minute maximizing, relaxing and de-puffing massage strokes. A mask was used to finish, and while this got to work, my hands also got some TLC as Marie extended the blissful massage strokes to my shoulders and hands.
Whatever your skin type or skin concerns, Clarins’ BeautyBAR has a treatment designed for you. You can choose from eight fantastic thirty minute treatments: Knot a Problem, Skin Care Workout, Get Glowing, SOS Facial, DeStress Express, Revital Eyes, Firming Favourite, and, specifically designed for men, A Little He Time.
A touch of make up was also delicately and skilfully applied to add colour back to my face afterwards, without feeling heavy.
The beautiful tucked away BeautyBAR meant I could hear little noise, and combined with the use of Clarins natural, highly effective skin care products applied using unique methods, it was surprisingly tranquil. I was left in the capable hands of Therapist Marie, who guided me through the treatment choices and completed a speedy skincare analysis. Both the SOS Facial and Get Glowing sounded perfect for me, so Marie offered to combine the two. A double cleanse was followed by some gentle exfoliation and moisture quenching hydrating serums to re-hydrate my skin, all using a gentle, gliding massage technique to boost the effectiveness of the products and give glowing results. My eyes were looking particularly fatigued, which were revitalised
30
The plant propelled products smelt heavenly and really did deliver, leaving my skin plump, dewy, fresher and brighter, with dark circles dispatched and my small break out banished. My therapist also gave me some expert tips and tailor made skin care suggestions for my beauty routine at home. With newly found radiant skin and lifted spirits I still had time for a quick lunch before heading back to work.
Each treatment costs £25 and lasts for 40 minutes, including a 10-minute consultation. Availability: Exclusively at John Lewis Oxford Street, John Lewis Liverpool and Debenhams Bradford. To book, visit: www.Clarins.co.uk/beautybar

HIS&HERS MEN’S STYLE
THE PERSONAL BARBER WORDS: Richard Hill
I
n a world of more and more innovations, one which turns a daily chore into a daily treat is sure to bring a little sunshine into our lives. The Personal Barber is a concept which does just that.
www.thepersonalbarber.com Men who decide against growing a beard, either because of personal taste, fear of small animal infestations, or a (bush) fire, have to start the day with a shave. Wet shaves (ask the experts) give a smoother, longer lasting shave, and The Personal Barber have launched a scheme to provide the best shaving experience.
The concept is very simple. You pay a monthly fee and in return each month you receive an array of shaving goodies. The type of merchandise you receive will not be found in Boots or Superdrug. We were sent the first box, which is sent to new subscribers. This included a classic safety razor with blades, a luxury shaving brush, a choice of shaving creams, and step by step instructions on how to get the best shave. With each box sent, post free, every month, subscribers get to try new soaps with different smells and textures as well as oils, balms, alums and colognes. Subscriptions can be cancelled at any time. We recommend giving it a try. It’s not often that having a close shave can be such a pleasant experience.

ROBYN MCGLINCHEY’S HEALTH & FITNESS SECRETS FOR SPRING
I
don’t know about you, but there are at least four things that I promised myself I would start up this year that I haven’t quite got off the ground yet. The planned easing into the new year turned into a whirlwind and now the spring bulbs are popping up already! If this sounds familiar, don’t resign yourself to another year with a manic schedule, minimal time for yourself and certainly don’t forget all the things you’d love to do. Get going now. So it’s no longer January, but your dreams have no deadline. Pull out that journal and start writing, dust off your trainers and get out of the front door, or why not sign up for that class you’ve been thinking of taking.
When the blues start setting in, the first thing I do is get active. It’s amazing how a spot of physical activity boosts your energy, gets the heart rate up, the blood pumping and all this makes you immediately feel better about yourself. Exercise is a mood regulator. There is plenty of research out there listing the endless benefits of exercise and the link with self-esteem, but the bottom line is the more you move, the better you feel. The better you feel, the more you are able to achieve. So you move even more. And so on. And the manic schedule? Before it gets worse year on year, there is plenty that you can do to get ahead of the madness. My mum always told me in times of stress to be kind to myself. Be gentle. Pilates is my refuge and for so many reasons. The things I love most about it are the gentle, flowing movements, the breathing and mostly the fact that you cannot think about anything else for that time.
38
Don’t get me wrong, you can still break a sweat on the mat but it somehow feels more sustainable and, therefore, more rewarding. Being gentle with yourself isn’t limited to booking a spa retreat or taking a Pilates class. Keep things simple, make small changes to your week. There are a host of ways to streamline and organise your admin. Book in time to relax, exercise and spend time with loved ones. Turn off the tech at least one night a week. Read more, stretch more, breathe more. Be more aware. Rekindle your love of the simple things: a bunch of flowers, a hot shower, a freshly brewed coffee. Whatever it takes. Start now, be gentle, move more, take care. Of yourself, your body and your mind.

YSL’s Rouge Pur Couture, The Mats, in Rouge Rock is a classic and wearable red that suits most skin tones. It has a super matte finish and is velvety soft on the lips. 3. Rouge Dior in 5th Avenue is a plumping, timeless, deep, red with a satin finish. Softly blur the edges of your lips with a cotton bud for a less severe, diffused look. 4. Rouge Eclat in nude rose is a subtle and chic lip colour, also boasting an age defying formula to help maintain the youthfulness of lips. 5. Bobbi Brown’s Sterling Nights lip colour in Atomic Orange is an orange-red hue, in a comfortable, creamy, semi-matte formula. It’s particularly flattering on darker skin tones.

MCARTHURGLEN CHAMPIONS
NORMA JEAN MARTINE UNIVERSAL’S NEWEST SENSATION WORDS: Alain Jalbert
A
New Yorker living in London, singer/ songwriter Norma Jean Martine has been quietly working away. She’s made festival appearances (such as Latitude and Calling) and has done a piano session for Radio 1’s Huw Stevens. She’s written songs for top-ten artists: she co-wrote the title track from Ronan Keating’s Time of My Life, and songs co-written by her have appeared in both the Italian (such as Giorgia’s Quando Una Stella Muore) and German charts (writing for German artist Lena). She’s just re-recorded George Michael’s Freedom, and it will front the new campaign for McArthurGlen Designer Outlet. You’d be forgiven then for wondering how she’s managed it all at just twenty two. The answer is a mixture of creative inquisitiveness and an unwavering adoration for the craft of creating music. Norma’s interest in languages gave her the scope to work in different countries: Norma studied German as part of a Languages major at college - eighteen months later she signed her publishing to BMG Chrysalis. A year later she signed a record deal with Universal Germany. “Music is all about communication, so I think that’s why languages are so important and exciting for me”, Norma says. A desire to communicate and connect underpins Norma’s approach to her work - she told me “I think when I sing I always imagine making love to whoever I’m singing to. It’s meant to be intimate. I think that’s what I mean when I say that. I feel the same way about singing live. I want to deeply connect with every person in the room.” After watching The Rolling Stones at Glastonbury she told me she remembered “people walking around singing the songs the next morning which really resonated. For me, that is the ultimate thing”. Clearly Norma has a pronounced interest in how music can create a deep bond between the artist and the audience, and this saturates and shapes her work. For Norma, her
44
recent single Animals isn’t so much a break-up song as it is an exploration and portrayal of how sexual excitement “is a super-emotion”, as she describes it. Her music has an authentic, artistic edge too because of her love for the work of other musicians. Her music amalgamates and reconstitutes different sounds and styles to create something distinctly her own: in Animals Norma says “in the middle 8 I was definitely referencing Ryan Tedder”, but later “with the big guitars and stuff though, I was thinking Jack [White]. I wanted it to be like a pop tune that Jack was ripping on.” Her keen interest in fashion - she’s just been sitting front row at London Fashion Week - plays into her creation of music too: as Norma explains “music and fashion are the same; it is art... It’s really fun to make things that shouldn’t go together, sound like they belong side by side. I was at Henry Holland’s show this London Fashion Week and he is the king of that, making elements that should never work together fit brilliantly. That is really inspiring, and in a way, the fashion version of what I try to do every day.” In her version of Freedom Norma adjusts George Michael’s pop classic with a modern and feminine twist. She’s enthralled by her collaboration with McArthurGlen Designer Outlet too: “it is a place that you can go, in so many different parts of the world, and find brands you might have never heard of alongside ones you know, and just create your own personal look all in one place. I absolutely love vintage, and McArthurGlen have even offered vintage pop-ups in their centres. That’s how I think of style. No-one is a brand, we are individuals”. Norma Jean Martine has re-recorded George Michael’s iconic track ‘Freedom’ for McArthurGlen Designer Outlet’s, the UK and Europe’s leading outlet fashion player stocking over 900 brands, Spring campaign which will launch nationwide on TV and radio from the 5th of March.

The Insider’s Guide to
ITALIAN DINING
E
ver wondered what the secret to great Italian food is? Brothers Paolo and Donato Cillo are probably your best bet in answering that question. The Cillos, originally from the south of Italy, have played a large part in establishing Liverpool’s completely buzzing Italian dining scene. Not sure what we mean? Wander along bohemian Bold Street, via the busy East Village of Duke Street or through the retail mecca that is Liverpool ONE and you’ll find classic Italian eateries, hipster pizzapasta-beer bars and modern Italian grill houses. There’s certainly enough choice to satisfy any lover of cucina Italiana. How exactly did Liverpool transform itself into a little Italy of sorts? For head chef Paolo and general manager Donato, it started with Il Forno. Since opening around a decade ago, the restaurant has racked up an impressive portfolio of food awards and is constantly packed with native diners. Then came P&D’s Bakery and Deli (Donato’s wife is a pastry chef) and more recently Crust.
46
The pair’s shining example of how Liverpudlian tastes can deliciously combine with Italian tradition, however, is grill house Manzo. Manzo is perhaps the city’s most playful Italian kitchen. Wood-fired pizza and fresh pasta is complemented by slow-cooked meats (such as the ‘Oink Oink’), burgers (try ‘The Bear Grylls’) and quirky surf’n’turf (Burger and Lobster), to name a few. Explaining the secret behind Manzo’s success, Donato says: “We stay true to our Italian roots by importing produce that is specially selected from small-scale suppliers in Italy - our flour, olive oil, everything. However, more and more, we are using these great products to create dishes that really appeal to the Liverpudlian palette - whether that’s charcoal-grilled chicken or pasta carbonara. “It’s about having fun with the cuisine we love, in the city we now call home.” Buon appetito!

HIS&HERS BEAUTY
Here at His & Hers, we’re often sent news of emerging new artists or photogr aphers. Occasionally we dream about snapping up our favourite prints, but today we’re daydreaming about a very different kind of canvas. We were intrigued to hear about Guerlain’s new collaboration with grafitti artist John Andrew Perello (who was dubbed JonOne by his peers). The result is some beautiful one-off bottles (which look like works of art) filled with three timeless fragrances. John was born in New York and began making graffiti in the effervescent Harlem scene of the eighties. In 1987, he arrived in Paris, which became his favourite playground. The artist would never leave this city, where his art would evolve like a giant puzzle under the open sky. In 2015, the path of this Parisian by adoption crossed that of the Maison Guerlain. Out of this improbable encounter, an outlandish project has been born. In this collaboration, the Maison Guerlain has offered JonOne its one-litre Bee Bottle as a canvas for expression. The result: three emblematic fragrances, three worlds of colour that directly evoke the emotion, the raw materials and the personality of each composition. Created in the artist’s atelier in Paris, each bottle is unique, created individually and signed by JonOne. The bottles, inscribed with the Guerlain name, are still adorned by the “Dames de Table” with a satin ribbon around the neck – in the pure tradition of the Maison Guerlain – before being slipped into a collector’s case signed by the artist. They will be available in La Petite Robe Noire, Shalimar and Rose Barbare.

OFF DUT Y
LONDON His & Hers escaped the crowds at a few of our favourite off-duty London haunts on Regent Street. WORDS: Jennie Blake THE LANGHAM HOTEL’S PALM COURT The opulent interior of Palm Court oozes elegance, yet is not overbearing, and paired with the sound of a tinkling grand piano, provided the perfect surrounding to indulge in Afternoon Tea. The five-star Langham hotel has been serving Afternoon Tea since 1865 and today offers a bespoke version of the tradition. After a glass of NV Laurent - Perrier we chose from the extensive range of tea with the help of the hotel’s tea sommelier, which is served in exquisite, tailor made “Langham Rose” Wedgwood teaware. With seamless, stellar service, first came a palette cleanser of Lemon posset, before flavourful finger sandwiches including smoked salmon with avocado and peppered beef pastrami with red Leicester coleslaw were served. With a change of tea to complement the next course, we enjoyed warm, light scones. This was followed shortly afterwards by a heavenly pastry selection of white chocolate mousse, strawberry and white balsamic Victoria sponge, English rose and lychee log and a raspberry and lightly roasted pistachio financier. From £49. www.langhamhotels.com
MOYSES STEVENS Moyses Stevens is a small gem tucked into Regent Street. DRY BY Leaving behind the bustling streets of central London, we found ourselves in salon nirvana. The blow dry and nail art studio offers a unique concept: A capsule collection of blow dry styles and nail art services, offered in quick time for modern, busy lives. They also have a sizeable collection of beautiful Shellac colours and a selection of luxurious independent haircare brands. Opting for a mid-day hair update, my stylist had a great eye and explained which hairstyles from the menu would suit me best, and executed it beautifully. As for the space, think chic and intimate. In muted tones of grey and dusky pink, a stripped back fireplace is counterpoised against marble surfaces and modern furniture. Relaxed and lost in warm chatter in this inner sanctum, time flew by and I left feeling wonderful with dreamy, swishy hair. Hair from £32, & nails from £21. www.dryby.co.uk
HEDDON STREET KITCHEN Part of the Gordon Ramsay Group, Heddon Street Kitchen offers an impressive and modern European menu, in a relaxing, warm and cheerful atmosphere. We were lead through the space, which is contemporary and tasteful with an industrial feel, and after being seated, presented with the excellent cocktail and wine menus. Our waiter was as friendly as he was knowledgeable, providing us with helpful recommendations for well-balanced cocktails before guiding us through the menu. I enjoyed Butternut squash soup, full of wonderful, deep and rich flavours. This was followed by a main course of slow roasted pork belly with spiced apple sauce, which was crisp, juicy and cooked to perfection. My dining companion chose the Loch Duart salmon to start, packed full of colour, before braised lamb’s neck accompanied with wholesome root veg, which he even described as being the best he has ever tasted. Heddon Street Kitchen has a lot to offer, which left a lasting impression. www.gordonramsayrestaurants.com
THE GLADE, SKETCH The entrance to the converted Georgian townhouse is unimposing, but as we were guided through the hall, it quickly became apparent we were in a building of designed eclectic grandeur. We took a left turn and found ourselves in a magical decoupage surrounding that evokes thoughts of an enchanted fairy tale forest. The cocktail menu exudes quality, providing enough variation whilst remaining a bearable read. The ‘Evil Genius #2’ comes highly recommended: A gin, elderflower and rhubarb bitters concoction with a heated twist of chilli tequila. A tried and tested flavour combination by one of the skilled bartenders. sketch.london

THE LAUNCH OF THE CLUB HOUSE
We know new bars and restaurants launch almost daily in the North West and our hard-working readers can’t be expected to check them all out! Please make time for the rather lovely new Club House, though! This Hamptons-inspired restaurant and bar based on Chavasse Park genuinely offers something different from the norm. A match made in heaven for
Lunya & Sikkim S
ikkim is home to gins almost like none other in the world. So says Peter Kinsella, co-founder of Lunya with wife Elaine. The pair have seen Lunya become one of the largest online delis in the UK, with a thriving business encompassing their multiple award-winning restaurants by the same name in Liverpool and now Manchester. “Prepared with a base of red tea made in the Tibetan region of Sikkim, this gin heralds from a part of India famed for some the best teas in the world. The least populated state in India, bordering Nepal and Tibet, and a gateway on the tea roads from China. It is here that the garden where their red tea grows can be found. Using copper stills made in 1831 and an ideal distillation method with the perfect balance in the proportions of alcohol and essences they make an exciting range of gins.” With summer in mind and a whole host of new Catalan cheeses in stock, Lunya decided that Sikkim Fraise would be the perfect cheese accompaniment this season. Peter added: “Sikkim Fraise is full of juniper and summer berries. A gentle pine flavour combined with red tea, floral essences, strawberries of the forest and red cranberries, the added coriander herb raising its head alongside a touch of bitter orange. It really is a stunning treat.”

IF YOU’RE SHAKING OFF THE LAST OF A WINTER COLD, FEELING RUN DOWN OR ARE JUST LACKING YOUR USUAL SPARKLE, BALANCE HEALTH CENTRE IS WELL WORTH A VISIT.
W
hile working on the spring issue, His & Hers called in to Liverpool’s popular Balance Health Centre to hear more about the complementary therapies they offer. We’d heard very good things about the treatments, which have helped people we know to ease their back pain or simply feel healthier, and were suitably intrigued. The Liverpool-based health centre looks modern (and spotlessly clean) and the team are friendly. They say they’re keen to restore clients’ equilibrium and their growing list of devotees (including a few journalists we know) suggests they’re doing something right! We’d first heard about Balance Health Centre for their osteopathy appointments, perfect for pesky back pain. They also tackle sports injuries and offer yoga classes (although when His & Hers enquired about yoga, we realised we’d have to book a space on a mat very early as they book up ever so swiftly). Braver journalists than those at His & Hers have also tried Balance Health Centre’s famous colonics and swear by them. The health centre does offer other complementary therapies, so if you’re feeling blue and just want a boost, it’s well worth speaking to the approachable team who’ll help to tailor a treatment to your individual needs.

CHAOPHRAYA: an Alluring Taste of Thailand in Liverpool ONE
WORDS: Jean Hill
F
or the His & Hers team, Chaophraya is in the immediate vicinity; it’s a gateway to Thai cuisine and culture, where you can appreciate the style, grace, and sheer skill of Thai cooking. It’s an elegant space, beautifully decorated and designed for comfort. Reading my notes, written during the meal, I’m back at the table sipping Tom Yum soup, which is hot, with a hit of chilli, mushrooms and lemongrass, that all adds up to a rich subtle flavour. My companions opted for a starter platter that combined different starters: beef in pepper sauce, chicken satay, grilled squid and Thai fish cakes with warm satay sauce. They loved it all. I’d opted for Massamon Lamb Curry. It’s stewed with massamon paste, coconut milk, potatoes, onions, chickpeas and cashew nuts, with turmeric, star anise, cardamom, cinnamon and chillies. It’s the subtle blend of ingredients that impresses, I wasn’t aware of any great heat. This was a favourite of the Thai Royal Family, dating back to the 16th century. Chicken Pad Thai was succulent, and delightful. King prawns with ginger are on my wish list for next time. And should there be any room left for dessert, fresh fruit fondue is tempting. The set menu is £35.50 per person. I enjoyed a mellow red wine which was perfect with the lamb. A visit to the powder room, was a revelation. It contains a wall to wall aquarium filled with breath-taking exotic aquatics. The tiles are classic stone, rough-hewn, and you wash your hands in beautifully crafted porcelain bowls. It feels like a soothing, refreshing ritual, and that’s the whole ambience. Chaophraya is a place to reflect, and celebrate the best in Thai food, short of taking that flight and finding your very own lagoon, with a restaurant nestled in a cove. And I haven’t dismissed that idea either. It’s a special experience, totally recommended.

is & Hers enjoyed a Friday night at Malmaison, where passion and personality dazzle in the Brasserie.
There’s a glowing brazier in the foyer at Malmaison, to welcome you in from the cold, and it’s probably the most memorable entrance on the waterfront; a feeling of warmth and well-being starts to seep through as we step inside and the ‘Mal’ starts to work its magic. It’s low key, high on style, and there are one or two original paintings to admire, as we reach our table, and take in a spectacular view, a backdrop of dark waters, freighters and sparkling lights in the Princes Dock. It’s a chic, cosmopolitan restaurant serving innovative and contemporary French food, it’s a study in honey and coffee tones, and features exposed brick walls, and natural timbers. There’s a separate ‘Homegrown and Local’ menu featuring the finest Lancashire and Cheshire produce.
A NIGHT AT THE
WORDS: Jean Hill
Staff are passionate about food; its provenance, taste and presentation. The service was faultless, delivered with great charm and genuine hospitality. Friday evenings can lead to rosé tinted glasses, yet nonetheless, it’s a fabulous experience. We decided to nibble on Artisan stone-baked bread with olives (whilst we waited for the starters), and the bread was breathtakingly fresh and crisp with an old fashioned wholesome flavour. The soup du jour was Pumpkin. It was delicious, quite a subtle taste with real depth. My companion opted for pasta, featuring a clever combination of ingredients skillfully and thoughtfully brought together. My companion didn’t speak for a short while, but when she did, all was good, and she loved the way no one taste overwhelmed, rather everything blended effortlessly together. I chose Seared Tuna Mignon with toasted sesame, pak choi, chilli & miso dressing. The tuna was barely cooked, but blissfully tender, with a fabulous crust of coriander and ginger. It was a meal to linger over, live music drifted across the dining area, and the room had filled up surprisingly quickly. There’s Mother’s Day to consider and you can buy vouchers for meals. Someone will love you forever if you do.

A NEW BRIGHTON
WORDS: Jean Hill
Treasure Trove
T
he Olive Tree Restaurant is a treasure trove of gourmet dishes waiting to be discovered in New Brighton. His & Hers has close ties with New Brighton: the Floral Pavilion, the boating lake, the crazy golf, the Light cinema, and much more (the growing up years). One of the truly outstanding qualities of the Olive Tree, which is close to all these amenities , is that it offers consistently really good food and great service. It’s worth mentioning because the food is out of the ordinary on a daily basis (apart from Monday and Tuesday when it’s closed in order to create more delectable dishes for the rest of the week). The Olive Tree has won several Wirral Tourism awards; it’s independent, it’s family run, and the charming and efficient staff are winningly invested in its success. The options are impressive. There’s Sunday roast, with a vegetarian option, there’s Scouse, and then in complete contrast there’s Red Onion and Fennel Bhagis (with mango chutney, coriander and mint raita). All credit to the chef who takes on the challenge of creating signature dishes that are lovingly prepared and delivered in great style. It’s home cooking with a gourmet twist. King Prawns and Crayfish Linguini, cooked in chili and garlic oil was a perfect accompaniment - the quality of the fish makes the dish. My family, who’ve become gourmets of ‘roasties’ recommend the Sunday dinners, comfort food at its best.

Brownies with ice-cream or cream are home-made by one of the staff who usually serves us; she manages the crispness with the gooiness, and the quality of the dark chocolate provides just the right flavour: (I’m an expert at cooking brownies and these are the best). It’s a three minute walk away from the Floral Pavilion and the Light cinema, so it make an ideal venue for a meal before theatre or a film.

hen His & Hers magazine heard that there was a brand new pizza restaurant opening up on Bold Street, we couldn’t resist paying a visit. There’s an extensive menu of pizza and calzone varieties, with a choice of dough bases: five grain, organic, gluten-free and detoxifying black vegetable charcoal dough, freshly made each day. There are also handmade pasta dishes, and classic starters like homemade bruschetta, a selection of burgers off the grill, and meats imported from Italy. There are plenty of vegan, vegetarian, glutenfree and dairy-free options, catering to just about anyone’s dietary preferences. Wines, cocktails and spirits are available, as are craft beers. We arrived for Sunday lunch, on a cold and dismal day. The restaurant was filling up with shoppers, needing that hit of carbs. We left the weather behind, and settled into warmer climes.
AN AUTHENTIC
PIZZA EXPERIENCE
WORDS: Jean Hill
Italian wood fire pizza ovens prove to be the powerhouse of the operation, located in a stainless steel dream of an open kitchen and the ovens, along with fine products imported from Italy, are what makes the finished article truly authentic. It’s a stylish restaurant with more space downstairs. Tiles, wood and customised wallpaper all combine to make this a comfortable place to relax, and enjoy excellent Italian food. There’s a friendly ambience, and the staff are attentive, efficient and really want your feedback; you sense that it really matters that you enjoy the experience. We sampled several desserts, felt obliged really! Birramisu was my favourite, an intriguing take on the Italian classic Tiramisu (using craft beer). Crust has connections to Duke Street Restaurant: Il Forno, and the recently opened Liverpool ONE grill-house, Manzo, which puts it in distinguished company, and it’s a logical and exciting progression to offer an authentic pizza experience. His & Hers plan a return visit to sample some of the pasta dishes and possibly a cocktail or two.

HIS&HERS BEAUTY
KATE UPTON
SHARES HER TOP BEAUTY AND BATHROOM ESSENTIALS Kate Upton has given us serious make up envy as she models for the new Bobbi Brown campaign with a natural sun kissed look. We have found out from the duo how to achieve Kate’s look and also find out her bathroom essentials. MORNING MUST
HAIR HERO
I wash my face with Dr. Hauschka’s Cleansing Cream and moisturize with Bobbi’s Hydrating Gel Cream. I always follow with sunscreen. Growing up in Florida, my mom made a point to put sunscreen on us kids, so I picked up that routine early on. It’s truly essential. For body, I moisturize with Bliss’ Lemon + Sage Body Butter. In terms of makeup, I use Bobbi’s Creamy Concealer, Bronzing Powder, Pot Rouge Blush, Smoky Eye Mascara and several of her lip colours, softer for day and some of the reds and wine colours for night.
When I started modelling it was hard on my hair because of all the hot irons used on it. I learned about a brand called Leonor Greyl, and I use the shampoo and hair mask as a conditioner every time I wash my hair.
SKIN SECRET Bobbi’s new Intensive Skin Serum Foundation SPF40. I love how this foundation instantly makes my skin look great and it applies really well so you can just use your hands. I like that it has treatment benefits too – I feel like it’s working overtime.
TOP SCENT I actually don’t have one. I love products and enjoy trying new things. I like fragrance, but sometimes I forget to wear it. Jo Malone’s Lavender & Lovage candle is one of my favorites. I have a few of them sprinkled around my house and I almost always have them lit. There’s just something calming about the scent.
QUICK FIX I’m all about making shortcuts. My new thing is to use a cream blush on my cheeks and then dab a bit on my lips. It adds color to your face without competing. For eyelashes, I like taking the wand and twirling it from root to tip to make them curl nicely.
GET THE LOOK: For Kate’s ultimate freshfaced glow use Nude Finish Illuminating Powder. It can be used over make-up or on bare skin to instantly lift and brighten your complexion, with a wash of skin tone-complementing colour. £39

Bobbi on Kate Upton: “Kate does what she feels and doesn’t follow anyone’s rules. She is a total individual, who is comfortable in her own skin,” says Brown, “That confidence radiates from her and really draws people in. It’s part of what drew me to her from the beginning.”
