Welcome Welcome to the high summer fashion issue, featuring Kate Moss, Kate Upton, our beautiful brights style shoot, and our mustbuy, must-see and must-do hot list for the season ahead. While working on this issue, I was honoured to witness a small slice of fashion history in the form of the unveiling of Kate Moss’s show-stopping new range for Topshop. Having followed Kate Moss’s stellar career from my teens (around the same time that I developed a lifelong Topshop shopping habit), getting a first look at the key pieces from Kate’s 2014 Topshop collection has been one of my summer highlights. Special thanks are due to Topshop Press Officer Holly Stewart and Topshop Personal Shopper Charlotte Harper for all their help with the Kate Moss at Topshop feature from p8. Other issue highlights include ‘Welcome to the Jungle’, our summer style shoot, (from p14) featuring fashion’s boldest and brightest new pieces. Many thanks to Stylist Bryan Harrop for all the hard work behind the scenes on this shoot, to the brilliant team, and for the use of the Palm House, which provided the perfect backdrop for this photo-shoot. Another of my 2014 highlights has been working with Bianca Iaciofano on the Jo Malone London pages from p20. From the brand’s exciting collaboration with ‘Calm & Collected’ to their creation of much-needed charity gardens, I’ve learnt that although we’d love Jo Malone London for their iconic fragrances alone, this brand has so much more to offer. You’ll find our fantastic regular columnists Matt & Jayne Littler (from p26), Emma McHarrie (p45), Joanne Watkinson (p51) and Marco Pierre White (p52) are all on fine form this issue, and a very big thank you is also due to Jon Allinson for the design of this edition and to my lovely mum, Jean Hill, for all her help with the diet-bustingly good food and drink pages. We’ll be back with more of the best from the North West in July.

SHE’S BACK! HIS & HERS CELEBRATES KATE MOSS’S TRIUMPHANT RETURN TO TOPSHOP. WORDS: Emma Hill
Call me a fashion geek, but ever since my teens, I’ve been watching Kate Moss’s sense of style develop one outfit at a time. From festival chic to red carpet glamour and from glossy campaign images to papped pictures snapped outside bars, no-one can captivate the attention of the fashion crowd as effortlessly as Kate Moss. Kate has dominated the UK fashion scene for over a quarter of a century, inspiring some serious wardrobe envy over the years. Also, despite her massive profile, it still feels like we know relatively little about Kate. She gives few interviews and is notoriously selective about the brands she works with. And crucially, even when a collaboration, such as Kate’s with Topshop, proves a stellar success, she leaves us wanting more. After Kate’s first collaboration with Topshop in 2007 caused stampedes on the British high-street as thousands clamoured to snap up one of the key pieces from the collection (tea dresses, anyone?) most brands and celebrities would be rushing to cash in and unveil their next joint collection. However, we had to wait until 2010 for Kate’s next limited edition Topshop collection, then another four years for this summer’s collection of 40 key pieces designed by Kate for Topshop to be unveiled. With supplies strictly limited (most stores will only receive one delivery of key pieces from the Kate Moss collection) it’s likely that parts of the range will sell out in a matter of hours. Perhaps because I feel like I’ve grown up with the Topshop brand (having shopped there consistently ever since I had to save my pocket money to do so) and with Kate Moss as a style icon, I’ll be staying up late and getting up early to be amongst the first to check out the range online and in store.

HER FASHION Charlotte Harper, Personal Shopper at Topshop’s flagship Liverpool ONE store reassured me that I’ll be in good company, confessing that many of her regular clients have been asking for tip offs about the Kate Moss collection for weeks. As part of Topshop’s free personal shopping service, customers have received exclusive invitations to shop from the Kate Moss collection from the comfort of the personal shopping suites while enjoying a champagne breakfast. Charlotte says that the response from customers wanting to attend has been overwhelming. Charlotte is well known for her relaxed, friendly approach paired with an uncanny ability to find incredibly figure flattering fashion for her customers. She’s so good at this that I visit her whenever I want a stress-free fashion fix, as do several of my friends who work as stylists and even designers. Sometimes even if you spend your days styling other people it’s nice to have someone do the same for you once in a while. When I asked Charlotte how she expected the new Kate Moss collection to go down with her customers, her excitement was evident. “’Show stopping’ is the phrase Kate Moss has used throughout when working on this collection”, said Charlotte, “and it genuinely is a show stopping range. Almost every single item is an iconic piece in my opinion”. Charlotte anticipates that key pieces from the collection, including a tasselled navy blue leather jacket, an off-theshoulder lemon dress, which Kate has been papped wearing, and the ultra-wearable playsuits, will fly out of the Liverpool Topshop store, adding: “The thing about this collection is that there will be almost no replenishment. Once it’s gone, it’s gone.” She added: “The best thing about this collection for me is that there are lots of touches that you know Kate has had a real influence on. Plus the quality of the materials used is fantastic. My clients range in age from 15 to 70 plus and there’s something for everyone in this collection. Also, these are pieces that you’ll want to keep for years to come.”

HER FASHION “I am personally thrilled that Kate wanted to come back to Topshop to work with us again. The first time around was such a lot of fun and she has been sorely missed”, said Sir Philip Green, adding: “The Topshop business has developed extensively around the globe since we launched with Kate in 2007, and we’re proud to be selling the collection in 38 countries worldwide where Topshop has a presence, in addition to creating pop-ups in department stores around the globe and making the collection available on Net-a-Porter, Nordstrom stores and Nordstrom.com” Kate Moss added: “I have really missed being involved in the design process, and working with the team at Topshop. I am very excited to create a new collection that bears my name. Now more than ever with London being at the forefront of fashion, it feels like I’m back home working with Topshop.” A free personal shopping service is available from Tophop’s Liverpool Store at 2236 Church Street, and from other larger Topshop stores. The Kate Moss collection is being sold globally in all Topshop stores and online at Topshop.com and also from NET-A-PORTER.COM, within Nordstrom stores and at Nordstrom.com

HIS & HERS FELL HEAD OVER HEELS FOR MCARTHUR GLEN’S COLOURFUL CATWALK BARGAINS.
T
he Piazza at the McArthur Glen Designer Outlet was an inspired choice for a stunning fashion show: shoppers out bagging bargains gathered around to form the audience, and out strode the models, blinking in the sunshine. There was a pink and green spring pastel theme, mixed with stone, and silver metallics: a male model sauntered by, looking elegant in Reiss Prince of Wales green check jacket and stone coloured pants. The Ted Baker playsuit in cream/stone, that looked like it was tailor-made for the petite model, was a show stopper: beautifully cut, discreet stitching detail in the impeccable tailoring and accessorised with a gold clutch.
There was much to admire: A French Connection sizzling pink mini; a Phase 8 flamenco red fitted maxi; a sleek silver grey Karen Millen number; a statement Gant striped shirt and Hobbs flouncy cream mini. It was an afternoon of high fashion on display, which is just a flavour of what the Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet at Ellesmere Port has to offer – non-stop designer desirables. The presenter, wearing a gorgeous Ted Baker, full-length canary yellow pleated skirt, almost stole the show. There were bargains galore to be had: the stand-out being a Karen Millen silver maxi dress, RRP £235.00, which was on sale that day for £50.

Jo Malone London gets creative for their first collaboration with Calm & Collected.
T
his May, creative force Calm & Collected became artists-in-residence, setting up studios within Jo Malone London’s boutiques at Selfridges London, Manchester and Birmingham.
Calm & Collected have designed five exclusive bottles for several of Jo Malone London’s most iconic fragrances: English Pear & Freesia, Pomegranate Noir, Lime Basil & Mandarin, Earl Grey & Cucumber and Peony & Blush Suede, embellishing the brand’s distinctive boxes and bags with beautiful silk screen designs. Calm & Collected was formed by four like-minded artists with the aim of creating fun and irreverent designs. Through a collaborative process, they balance typography and imagery in their work with a hand-made focus. Calm & Collected is made up of Adam Bletchly, an illustrator with an overactive eye for detail and texture, Alex McCullough, who gathers inspiration from the edges of obscurity and the banal in equal proportion., Chris Mackenzie, a specialist in typography and Donal Sturt, a fan of simple design solutions and lover of pictograms. Calm & Collected will be working at the Selfridges studios to create one-off boxes, personalised live in store. This collaboration is part of The Selfridges Beauty Project, a store-wide campaign celebrating all definitions of beauty. The Calm & Collected studio will open at the Jo Malone London boutique at Selfridges London, Birmingham and Manchester on 1st May 2014–15th June 2014. COULD THIS BE THE WORLD’S MOST CHARITABLE CANDLE? THIS SUMMER, EVERYONE WHO BUYS ONE OF JO MALONE LONDON’S SILK BLOSSOM CHARITY CANDLES WILL ALSO BE CONTRIBUTING TO THE WORDS: Emma Hill CREATION OF A MUCH-NEEDED COMMUNITY GARDEN.
E
arlier in the year, I was proud to be one of the first to see the plans for Jo Malone London’s latest Urban Community Garden Project in Liverpool.
Jo Malone London’s UK Communications Assistant, Bianca Iaciofano, showed me a selection of watercolour sketches of the Kirkdale Country Garden, which will open to the public this June. Bianca explained that as English gardens are a huge source of inspiration for the Jo Malone London creative team, it made sense to put gardens at the heart of the company’s charity work. She then showed me the company’s mission statement, which reads: “We support marginalised communities in key cities to build and maintain beautiful, scented gardens. Collaborating with dedicated charities, we harness the power of gardens to improve the lives of those living in deprived and vulnerable situations. Our gardens are created to be therapeutic in the short term and life-changing in the long term.”
22
Each project is supported and maintained through the sale of a Jo Malone London Limited Edition Home Candle. This year’s Silk Blossom candle not only smells delicious – it also represents a small luxury that will make a big difference, with a donation equal to the full retail price going directly to the charity. In addition to creating gardens in London’s Battersea Park and Edinburgh, Jo Malone London has also been working with Rotunda, a community centre in Kirkdale, Liverpool, to create a focal point for an area in the top 1% in terms of poverty within the UK. Kirkdale’s Country Garden will be opened by Lord Mayor Gary Millar and refreshments for the grand unveiling will be provided by legendary local caterers, The Yacht Club (featured from p54), underlining Jo Malone London’s commitment to working with local suppliers. Look out for more charity gardens opening in Bristol and New York over the coming months.

When it comes to your hair, the grunge has gone and the love is back! It’s all about loving your locks again, think shimmer and shine by using products that add love to your hair such as a luxury hair treatment. Kerastase Masquintense is a perfect all-rounder. It smells divine and can give the thirstiest of hair the gloss it deserves. This tip also applies if you’re going to curl your hair; the aim is to create a perfect finish. Take your time to create an even root-to-tip bend either by using your rollers, tongs or a wand and voila, summer 2014 is all yours. The trend for lips for 2014 is bold and beautiful and red and orange are the shades that are leading the pack. Nars Heat Wave is number one for any orange lovers and Yves St Laurent Rouge Volupté has to be a key addition to any good His & Hers reader’s glamorous makeup bag. My all time band of bands has to be Elbow, and their latest album certainly does not let me down. It’s providing the perfect theme tune to my summer. I recently had the job of cutting the hair of said band before they played their sell-out gig at the Echo Arena. Watching the sound check was amazing and it was defiantly a night to remember. But don’t just take my word for it, go buy the album ‘The Takeoff and Landing of Everything’

MATT’S OBSESSIONS: Google Glass I finally got to have a play with these at Gadget Show Live last month - and you can believe the hype! It’s a little hard to get your head around at first, but within 10 minutes you will get used to the fact that the internet is essentially ‘in your head’ or more accurately ‘in your vision’. The overlay was intrusive and responded to my voice, even in the loud conference hall. I played some games on it (simple clay pigeon shooting) and searched the web. When google is bringing these out, and whether you’ll look like a wally when ‘on the street’ is still unknown. But an evolution of the internet it certainly is. Wolfenstien The New Order It’s probably more than 20 years since we last walked through a castle shooting Nazis with Bj Blazkowicz - the square jawed protagonist or Wolfenstien. But looking at him in this - the first true sequel to the original game - you wouldn’t know it. Machine Games have crafted a smart and well thought out shooter. Yes it’s still about shooting big stupid guns at the aforementioned Nazis and yes it’s big and brash and loud, but what they’ve also seen fit to do is think about narrative, and human reaction, and character, and WTNO is richer for it, very much so. Buy this! GH4 I make films, and for years the gap between prolevel kit and consumer tech has been shortening. However with Panasonic’s release of the GH4, the gap just shrank exponentially! This is a Micro Four Thirds DSLR which can capture 4K video in much the same way as the big movie cameras do, this doesn’t mean much for the man on the street, but if you’re even thinking about buying a stills camera why not punt for this and get a free cinema camera too? Expect to see some short films/music videos and even a couple of features shot on this bad boy in the coming months.

HIS & HERS ROAD TESTS THE NEW
CLARISONIC ARIA SINCE SPRING, WE’VE BEEN PUTTING CLARISONIC’S NEW ARIA SONIC SKIN CLEANSING BRUSH THROUGH ITS PACES TO FIND OUT WHETHER IT LIVES UP TO THE HYPE.
R
egular users of sonic toothbrushes and cleansing brushes like Clarisonic’s market leading range tend to say they’d never return to traditional toothbrushes or flannels once they’ve experienced the extra clean sensation delivered by sonic technology. As our road tester already owned one of the first Clarisonic cleansers (with just one speed setting) and a Sonicare toothbrush, they required no convincing that sonic technology (producing over 300 movements per second) delivers excellent cleaning results. Clinical trials of the Clarisonic range show that their sonic method delivers a cleanse which is six times better than cleansing by hand, making your skin more receptive to your usual creams, serums and moisturisers. After using the original Clarisonic Mia (RRP: £99) for several years, our road tester felt that blocked pores and dry and oily patches were all less visible, giving skin a clearer, more youthful appearance. Upgrading to the new Clarisonic Aria, the road tester was immediately impressed by the addition of three different speeds. Opting for the slower ‘Delicate’ speed, which is ideal for sensitive skin types, they said they’d use the middle (or ‘Universal’) setting after nights out and the top ‘Powerful’ speed once a week for a thorough exfoliation. They also liked the addition of a handy USB-enabled charger (perfect when travelling) and an adjustable T-timer, giving the choice of one or two minute cleansing cycles.
This is a minor improvement, but for the road-tester, who preferred a longer cleanse and hadn’t had this option with the original Clarisonic, this was another selling point. Also, after many months of using Clarisonic’s own cleanser, they were delighted to hear that the brand’s just partnered up with Lancôme, recommending Lancôme’s cult classic, Visionnaire and Gel éclat. This made a welcome change and they loved the fragrance and consistency of the products. At £155, the Clarisonic Aria is significantly pricier than the Mia, but our road tester felt that the enhanced features made it well worth upgrading.

HIS&HERS ENTERTAINMENT
HIS&HERS ENTERTAINMENT RECREATE KATE’S LOOK FROM THE NYC ‘THE OTHER WOMAN’ PREMIERE TRACY’S STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE: SKIN I prepped Kate’s skin with a rich moisturiser to create an all-over glow. I tapped a bit of Hydrating Eye Cream underneath the eye area and massaged Hydrating Face Cream onto the face and neck. I then applied Lip Balm. FACE I applied Skin Foundation SPF 15 in Warm Beige, using a sponge for a light finish. I also used a little Creamy Concealer in Warm Beige under her eyes. Then, I paid special attention to the area around Kate’s mouth, ensuring that skin looked flawless. I do this whenever I apply a bolder lip colour. For a pretty hint of colour, I applied Blush in Blushed on the apples of her cheeks. To ensure that her makeup lasted all night, I lightly dusted Sheer Finish Loose Powder in Pale Yellow onto her skin.
EYES I wanted her eyes to have a cool and imperfect look. To achieve this, I applied a lot of Smokey Eye Kajal Liner in Noir into her water line and into the roots of the top and bottom lashes. I asked Kate to squeeze her eyes closed, then blended out any leftover colour with the Smokey Eyeliner Brush. After curling her lashes, I applied Smokey Eye Mascara in Black on the top and bottom lashes. To help frame and intensify the eyes, I exaggerated the brows by filling them in with the Brow Kit in Cement/ Birch. Finally, I set them with the Natural Brow Shaper in Mahogany. LIPS Using a tissue, I blotted any excess Lip Balm off Kate’s lips. Then, I used the Retractable Lip Brush and carefully painted on a perfect dark red pout in Crimson Lip Colour. I blotted her lips, then layered on a final coat of lip colour. I then softened any hard lines with a cotton swab.
RECREATE KATE’S LOOK FROM THE LONDON ‘THE OTHER WOMAN’ PREMIERE TRACY’S STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE: SKIN To create an all-over glow, I prepped Kate’s skin with a lot of moisturiser – it plumps up skin for a refreshed look. I applied Hydrating Eye Cream and massaged Hydrating Face Cream onto her face and neck. I also smoothed Lip Balm onto her lips. FACE I began by applying Creamy Concealer in Warm Beige under the eyes. Then, I applied Skin Foundation SPF 15 in Warm Beige onto her face, using a light hand so her skin looked healthy – not overdone. Then, I lightly dusted Bronzing Powder in Medium evenly all over her face – focusing on the temples, cheeks and nose, as well as her neck. For a soft and feminine glow, I applied Blush in Pretty Pink onto the apples of her cheeks. Finally, I dusted Sheer Finish Loose Powder in Pale Yellow onto her skin to help set the look.
EYES I highlighted Kate’s eyes with winged liner, but kept the look modern. Using the Eye Shadow Brush, I swept Shimmer Wash Eye Shadow in Beige from the brow bone to the crease. The colour really complements Kate’s blue eyes. Then, using the Ultra Fine Eyeliner Brush, I lined her upper lids with Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner in Black Ink. To create the perfect winged liner, I dragged the liner slightly out and up so the look was subtle. Kate has amazing lashes so I began by curling them, then I applied Smokey Eye Mascara in Black on the top and bottom lashes. To frame this stronger eye look, I filled in her eyebrows by creating a strong arch with the Brow Kit in Cement/Birch. To keep them in place, I set them with Natural Brow Shaper in Mahogany. LIPS I lightly defined her mouth with Lip Liner in Pale Pink for staying power. Finally, I applied Rich Lip Colour in Uber Pink with the Retractable Lip Brush.

HIS & HERS TAKES A CULINARY JOURNE Y AT
IL FORNO & SAPPORO TEPPANYAKI
TAKE A STROLL DOWN LIVERPOOL’S DUKE STREET AND YOU’LL STUMBLE UPON TWO OF THE CITY’S BEST LOVED RESTAURANTS: IL FORNO AND SAPPORO TEPPANYAKI.
hile Il Forno has established a reputation which extends far beyond the city’s limits for serving top quality authentic Italian cuisine, the talented chefs at Sapporo Teppanyaki have brought the flair and theatre of Japanese dining to Liverpool.
W
Opting for a Pizza Caprino, we were delighted by the quality of this simple classic at such a modest price.
More than 6,000 miles may separate Italy and Japan, but these two very different restaurants have two things in common: both are owned by award-winning developers Iliad who are gradually transforming a once overlooked section of Duke Street into a vibrant pocket of culinary perfection, attracting foodies from across the North West.
At Sapporo Teppanyaki, we sampled ‘Shojin Ryori’, the restaurant’s popular vegetarian option, which features Vegetable Spring Rolls, Vegetable Tempura and Vegetable Maki Sushi Roast Peppers, followed by a Japanese Yuzu Fruit Cheesecake. Watching the chefs work their magic at the heart of the restaurant was a feast for the eyes and every morsel of our healthy meal was delicious.
The second similarity is that the staff at both venues will settle for nothing less than excellence (hence the flurry of awards won by both restaurants in recent years). His & Hers has a long-standing liking for Il Forno, a restaurant which delivers in spades every time we find ourselves craving Italian food. Most recently we visited the restaurant to sample their £5 lunchtime menu.
His & Hers would highly recommend Il Forno for their surprisingly inexpensive lunchtime menu and, of course, as the perfect place to while away those relaxed summer evenings over some of the city’s finest Italian cuisine.
Whichever of these Duke Street gems we choose, we’re sure you won’t be disappointed.

THE BEAUTY INSIDER’S GUIDE TO THE HOUSE BEAUTY SPA
I
t was with much excitement that I returned to one of His & Hers’ favourite haunts, The House Beauty Spa’s Childwall Park Avenue luxury day spa, as they headed towards their first birthday in July. As a true beauty addict, I was delighted to be one of the first to hear about The House’s latest additions to their treatment list. This relaxing haven has received the rare accolade of winning a prestigious Guinot Crown Award for the second year. Guinot’s owner, President of Guinot Paris, Dr Jean-Daniel Mondin, said: “At all Guinot salons, clients can be assured that they will receive professional, knowledgeable skincare advice and treatments, but it is the Crown salons that are particularly outstanding in their field”. Outstanding is a word we associate with every inch of The House – from Georgia’s impeccable taste in interior design to the welcome from Ann, the Housekeeper, as you enter the tasteful orangery. Amy Hart took great joy in sharing the House’s latest treatments with me. Elemis Biotec is exclusive to the Mather Avenue spa, combining the very latest technology with the therapist’s touches to create bespoke facials for every skin type in either 30 or 60-minute treatments.
36
And then there is the amazing Vita Liberata PHenomenal self-tanning mousse or lotion, which is revolutionising self-tanning. Certified organic, this instant tan is free from the aroma that often is associated with self-tanning, and it last four times longer than any other self tanning product, fading like a natural tan. Amy Hart, Senior Therapist at The House Childwall Park Avenue, put it simply, “We pride ourselves on providing the very best spa experience for our clients, using the finest collection of treatments and products in the industry and training our team of experts in the most up-to-date techniques to ensure they are at the cutting edge. The ultimate aim is that our clients leave feeling refreshed and restored after their visit to The House Beauty Spa.”

FORD’S TAKEOVER OF THE
MIL A N FURNITURE FAIR IF YOU HAVE MORE THAN A PASSING INTEREST IN DESIGN, THERE’S ONLY ONE PLACE TO BE IN APRIL AND THAT’S AT THE HEART OF THE ACTION AT THE SALONE DEL MOBILE.
HIS&HERS TRENDS
E
ver since my days as an interior design journalist, I’ve been making the annual pilgrimage of design junkies the world over to the Salone del Mobile (The Milan Furniture Fair). Last year, I attended as a guest of Ford, as the brand made design history by becoming the first car manufacturer to participate in the Salone del Mobile. This year I was delighted to join a record breaking 350,000 visitors at the famous furniture fair for a sneak preview of the new Ford Vignale. Your first associations with Ford may still be mass production and design geared for the mass market. And there’s something to this; Ford has been the UK’s top selling car brand for a staggering 34 years. However, much like Apple with their ubiquitous iPhones, Ford appears to be on a mission to prove that there’s demand within the mass market for great design. “A passion for design runs through Ford Motor Company, and by placing ourselves at the centre of the world’s most prestigious international furniture design event we can be inspired by emerging trends from the world of design,” said Barb Samardzich, Chief Operating Officer, Ford of Europe. To prove the point, Ford invited key national press to the stunning Palazzo Reale where we caught our first glimpse of the Ford Vignale. The amazing Italian architecture provided a pleasing backdrop and the Vignale is pretty easy on the eye, too with its silver pearlescent paint job and opulent leather interior. “Spacious and aspirational, the S-MAX Vignale Concept goes beyond traditional automotive design and speaks to customers who value aesthetics,” said Martin Smith, Executive Director, Design, Ford of Europe. “Our Vignale designers were inspired by trends from furniture to fashion to create this new expression of Ford.” After taking some time to admire the Vignale, the next port of call was the Salone del Mobile itself, where press were treated to a sneak preview of the ‘Vignale Lounge’. This chic modern interior design scheme will be rolled out at selected Ford retailers throughout Europe. Ford also displayed a Vignale lifestyle collection, including a bespoke travel bag that was awarded an iF Design Award. I lingered in the Vignale Lounge to listen to the Ford panel, including representatives of Ford, GQ Italia, Calligaris and Cool Hunting, posing the question: “What is luxury in 2014?” The consensus appeared to be that premium brands must now offer both a digital and a ‘real’ experience, weaving in the story of the brand. Having heard all about modern luxury, I strolled around the show to see it first-hand. Having admired dream kitchen and bathroom designs, I reflected upon that fact that it didn’t seem at all strange to see a car at the heart of a furniture show. These days it seems that great design really does transcend genres.
40
The Ford Vignale will be launched in Europe in 2015, offering Ford customers a premium vehicle at a competitive price point. There’ll be a firm emphasis on customer service, with every customer having a dedicated relationship manager, as well as a VIP collection and delivery service. Following the Vignale’s very warm reception from journalists at the Salone del Mobile, we’re likely to see a lot more of this vehicle in the new year. And following another confident showing at the world’s biggest design event I’m already looking forward to finding out what the Ford team have planned for next year’s Milan Furniture Fair. Design lovers, I hope to see you all there.

INTRODUCING SKINNY V IN THE WAKE OF ‘ALARMING’ NEW OBESITY STATISTICS, AN INNOVATIVE NEW ZERO CALORIE DRINK LOOKS SET TO SHAKE UP THE SOFT DRINKS MARKET. DESIGN: Jessica Heaton
ollowing the publication of the latest NHS statistics showing an “alarming” rise in the UK’s obesity epidemic, and commitments from major retailers to cut 6.4 trillion calories from supermarket shelves, Skinny V, a new calorie-free soft drink without any of the preservatives, additives or sweeteners found in its competitors looks poised to take the UK drinks market by storm.
F
on a night out. My choices were so limited that it became a challenge to go out and enjoy myself. “Any drink I found would be laden with hidden additives and a ridiculous amount of calories, which wasn’t ideal when following a healthy lifestyle. This all became my driving force to create this healthy alternative for myself and others like me who are diabetic, want to be healthy or simply want a change. Skinny V is for everyone.”
Skinny V differs from other major calorie free soft drinks brands because it’s made without artificial sweeteners or additives. The drink is available in a range of five flavours (including Apple, Peach, Lemonade and Berry) and following its highprofile launch at London Fashion Week, where models, designers and celebrities struck a pose with Skinny V’s distinctive white bottles, there are already plans to extend the range.
It seems that with rates of both diabetes and obesity rising dramatically in the UK, Ian has struck a nerve with health-conscious consumers and also with supermarkets and bars seeking to offer an alternative to the usual range of highsugar soft drinks.
As well as becoming a must-have for the fashion crowd at LFW, Skinny V was again spotted in the celebrity gossip pages when Beyoncé and her fellow performers were all treated to their own bottles of Skinny V at the Brits. For a brand that’s only a month old, it’s been a stellar rise to success. Not only are celebrities and sportspeople being papped with the distinctive white bottles, you’ll also spot the drink in leading hotel chains, bars, and soon at selected supermarkets throughout the country. Most businesspeople can only dream of making such major inroads into the marketplace overnight, but Ian Minton, the Managing Director of Skinny Drinks Enterprises, says that his goal when launching his company was both simple and personal, explaining: “As a type one diabetic it was increasingly hard for me to find a suitable drink
42
The drink is packed with vitamins B1, B3, B6, B12 and C and Ian was so determined to avoid any chemical nasties when making Skinny V that he’s become one of the first soft drinks manufacturers to create a product with a relatively short shelf-life. He feels this is a small price to pay for creating a drink that’s entirely guilt-free. And with zero sugar, calories or carbs, Skinny V appears to be exactly what shoppers want during a backlash against fast food culture and the associated health risks. Ian will be rolling the brand out through high-end supermarket retailers as well as luxury hotels and bars throughout the year and with an aspirational marketing campaign and celebrity endorsements planned for the months to come, it looks like the reaction against the big brand high-fat high-sugar foods which dominated the market in recent decades has already begun. As a nation gradually adjusts its eating habits, it looks like Ian Minton has launched the right product at exactly the right time!

COOL DOWN AND CHILL OUT
AT SHAKTI STUDIOS THIS SUMMER, AS THE TEMPERATURE RISES, MANY YOGA LOVERS ARE BEGINNING TO RETREAT FROM THE HEAT, SEEKING OUT ROOM-TEMPERATURE SPACES LIKE SHAKTI STUDIOS TO TAKE THEIR PRACTICE TO THE NEXT LEVEL.
O
ver the past few years, we’ve seen a rapid rise in the popularity of hot studios, which are beginning to dominate the yoga market.
However, some yoga lovers, like Estelle Cartlidge, who opened Liverpool’s enormously popular Bikram Yoga studio (offering 90 minute Bikram classes in a studio heated to 105 degrees Fahrenheit) several years ago, have been beginning to crave classes in a room temperature studio to complement their practice in the heat. Born from her desire to enhance her own yoga practice and also to offer all those who attend her Bikram classes complementary classes in a room temperature studio, Estelle opened Liverpool’s new Shakti Studios (adjacent to Bikram Yoga). His & Hers paid Shakti Studios a visit to attend several of Gina Torres’s Core Vinyasa Flow classes. We really can’t recommend these classes highly enough. They’ll help you to improve flexibility, lower stress levels, ease back pain
44
and strengthen muscles (to name just a few of the benefits) and you’re likely to float out of the studio feeling lighter and considerably more relaxed after just 45 minutes (making this the perfect lunch-break class). Shakti Studios also offer the celebrities’ choice, Aerial F.L.Y Yoga, a firm favourite of Gwyneth Paltrow, which involves working out a few feet above the ground in a silk hammock. Estelle was keen to bring Aerial Yoga, which provides a sense of weightlessness and the ability to build flexibility and strength, to Liverpool. You’ll also find Yoga Bears children’s classes, meditation classes and more besides at the friendly and welcoming Shakti Studio. His & Hers can’t wait to return and would highly recommend this brilliant facility to anybody keen to look and, most importantly, feel better.

JOANNE WATKINSON ON DRESSING WITH CONFIDENCE Experienced stylist and personal shopper Joanne Watkinson explores the complex relationship between fashion and confidence.
F
ashion is a funny old game, often laughed off as a fluffy, vanity fuelled hobby for vacuous people. But here’s the really funny part, people who dismiss fashion are missing the point entirely. Clothes are an outward expression of our personality, a representation of our individual tastes, our mood and our identity. While trends may create a more uniform look among us, each person has the freedom and opportunity to do as they like, there are no written rules; on the contrary, fashion is about breaking rules and finding what works for you is positively encouraged. What about the so-called ‘fashion police’, the critics, those who judge? Self appointed, may I remind you, myself included, but really, fashion is about personal taste. There is something to be said for proportion, which plays a big part in making an outfit work, and by ‘work’ I mean flattering the wearer, which in my job is the ultimate goal. I spent my late teens and early twenties watching Sex & the City. While the fictional characters were great, for me the costumes stole the show, particularly Carrie Bradshaw’s, which were created by the brilliantly eccentric Patricia Field. Her freestyle approach to styling was so exciting, inspirational and fresh but the vital ingredient for the looks she created? Confidence. In real life, of course, the key to dressing with confidence isn’t so stage managed and is entirely down to the individual; a certain amount of praise from a third party will help the process along, but, at the risk of sounding too hippy dippy, confidence has to come from within. What has all of this got to do with fashion, you may ask; clothes are a woman’s armour, our handbag is our shield, they allow us to portray an image of professionalism or status. While for a man a sharp suit in the boardroom shows they mean business, women do powerful in heels - now that’s confidence!

t feels like only yesterday that we were in the throes of autumn, preparing to batten down the hatches in time for winter. Now we find ourselves already on the cusp of summer, and it is a wonderful feeling. With the brighter days comes the tennis and cricket seasons, the blossom floating in the breeze and those wonderful, laid-back days spent outside sipping fine wine with friends and family. My restaurants will showcase new menus and exciting new flavours, and my al-fresco areas will be abuzz with people wishing to take their dining experience outside. I hear in Liverpool that the Cotton Lounge with its Chapel Street al-fresco seating is the place to be and to be seen during those balmy summer evenings. Speaking of Liverpool, what an exciting summer lies ahead. Not only does the International Festival for Business take centre stage, bringing the world’s leading business movers and shakers to the city, but the aweinspiring Giants will make their momentous return. Liverpool has always held a special place in my heart. It’s a city which is riding the crest of a wave, a fearless metropolis which isn’t afraid to think big. I am beyond proud to have a presence there.

One for the diary - do remember to visit us at one of my restaurants on Father’s Day on June 15th. Bring dad in tow, and I promise he will be suitably spoilt. For now, do enjoy the coming months, and if you find the time amid the hustle and bustle of summer, why not try my recipe for this classic desert - chocolate mousse. It is a delightful treat.
Classic Chocolate Mousse INGREDIENTS: 450G DARK CHOCOLATE 250G EGG WHITES 250G CASTER SUGAR 100ML WATER 750ML DOUBLE CREAM
Method Melt the chocolate in a glass bowl over a pan of gently boiling water. In a separate pan, add the sugar and water together and cook until it reaches a soft ball stage on a sugar thermometer. Then pour the sugar and water mixture onto the egg whites while whisking using an electric mixer and leave to whisk until glossy and cold. Whip cream until semi whipped, fold melted chocolate into the meringue, then gently fold in the cream. Pour into desired moulds/serving dishes, and leave to chill for at least four hours. Serve. Enjoy. For more information visit

THE ULTIMATE SUNDAY LUNCH AT THE YACHT CLUB, LIVERPOOL MARINA
T
he Liverpool Marina Yacht Club is part of the heritage of a great city, with a sea-faring legacy, and it must be one of the most spectacular views along the waterfront. As we approach, boats gently sway, bob and dip in water that sparkles like diamonds: the sun always seems to be shining on the Marina when His & Hers pays a visit. We were thrilled to have an invite to the Carvery Sunday Lunch. The Yacht Club is a hub of activity; the place of choice for many who come to watch the match over a leisurely lunch, or snack on big chips and sandwiches in the bar. If the match is not for you, the restaurant provides an elegant quieter setting with spectacular views. The carvery is always impressively wellstocked: it’s classic traditional fare that is both locally sourced and seasonal. The restaurant owner and head chef, Adam Franklin, has built up a local reputation for serving fine food: the staff are friendly and attentive, and we could feel ourselves relaxing into a mellow mood. We came back to see the Liverpool v Manchester City game, which turned out to be a rollercoaster, but comfort food definitely has a calming effect in stressful times. The carvery offers a wide range of roast meats, as you would expect: ham, beef and chicken, with all the trimmings – Yorkshire pudding, home-made relishes and sauces. The vegetables look and taste fresh and crisp (the roast potatoes are deliciously crisp on the outside and melt in the mouth inside). There was tuna on the menu, which was a tempting option, but the roast dinner is hard to beat. There’s a great choice of desserts and it proved impossible to resist apple and cinnamon pie (my favourite) or the popular chocolate fudge cake. I can’t think of a better way to enjoy a lazy Sunday afternoon, shooting the breeze.

LIVERPOOL’S SPECTACULAR
SPICE LOUNGE WORDS: Jean Hill
H
is & Hers has a history with The Spice Lounge. It’s a beautiful location: the entrance is spectacular – exquisite globular chandeliers, original artwork, and beautiful exposed brickwork. As soon as we arrived it felt like a special occasion. We were warmly greeted by the owner, Ali Noor, who has a long-standing relationship with His & Hers. We learnt a little about the philosophy and principles behind this amazing restaurant. Oil is used very sparingly, there are no preservatives or artificial colourings, the chefs use traditional spices with health enhancing properties, yoghurt, delicious authentic sauces: cream is used sparingly and freshly sourced meat and fish are of the highest quality. Poppadoms with mango, yogurt and mint, and lime chutneys proved to be the perfect appetizer and the King Prawns (Anari Jhinga) is probably the best starter in the hemisphere. The sheer size and tenderness of the prawns would be enough, but the accompanying sauce is exquisite, a sweet and sour extravaganza with garlic, lemon juice, tomato, garam masala, mustard, cumin and coriander.
56
My companion chose Talichire Squid, fried in butter with Indian herbs and delicate spices, which he absolutely loved. There was always guidance on hand, and I took advice on the Peshwari Nan (filled with sweet almond, coconut and sultana paste) to accompany Lamb Suganda and it was a match made in heaven. The lamb is medium hot, but the spices are quite delicate, and the meat melts in the mouth as it hits the taste buds. My companion chose Butter Chicken, which he said had the subtle flavours of Indian herbs, spices and cream with tomato, a gentle blend that brought out the flavour of the chicken perfectly. There was no room for desserts but I’m guessing they’re pretty stunning too. If you haven’t been, go! It’s a real celebration of Indian food, cooked and served with great inspiration and sheer brilliance. It was a great evening, and made up for the crushing football results (both Liverpool and Everton) that weekend. It was a blissful, healing process.

LIVERPOOL
BAR & GRILL I
t’s Saturday night in Liverpool. Where to go? A lot of savvy folk gravitate to the Liverpool Bar & Grill, Halifax House, Brunswick Street and His & Hers thought we should check out this trending venue – it seemed too long since our last visit.
The building is magnificent. The domed entrance is spectacular, and this leads straight into the Bar, which is where we, naturally, began our evening. It’s a packed house, but there’s still room to sit and stare. There’s something therapeutic about watching an expert prepare a Mojito, and it tasted as good as it looked (the lime and mint were wonderfully fresh). The Merlot was smoothness itself. And after doing some serious people watching, some light gossip and generally winding down, we were sought out and led to our table. The starter I chose: crispy duck spring rolls with plum and pineapple dipping sauce, was spicy, delicious, and the flavour of the duck came through with a zing. I stole some of my companion’s garlic bread, because it was so fresh and crispy, but I sacrificed a crispy duck roll to make amends. My companion chose slow cooked, free range pulled Pork with smoky barbecue flavour, which she raved about – and this definitely was not for sharing! The pork was tenderness itself, with a smoky flavour that made it special. I settled on sea bass, simply grilled, with chunky chips (great combo): lemon juice and pepper
were all the sea bass needed, though there is a spicy variation if you like to mix it up. There was no room for desserts, but I remember them as being epic. Crème Brulee was always a favourite. There’s a Sunday Roast board, £25 for two to share, (as you would imagine only available on a Sunday), which is a brilliant deal. The house cut chips are very moreish. The beef is 100% British, Hereford and Aberdeen Angus. It’s a class act; ingredients are of the highest quality and it’s a great place to eat. There’s also a private dining room for special events.

EST EST
T
AIGBURTH’S CHIC NEW ITALIAN EATERY
he recently launched Est Est restaurant is in the leafy suburbs of Aigburth, yet it has the style of a truly sophisticated metropolitan venue. It was a forbidding chilly night and we were approaching the entrance at some speed. There’s an expanse of glass frontage and it occurred to me this might feel a little exposed and cool inside; wrong on both counts. The lighting and décor are subtle and sophisticated: blue strip lighting and dark wood, and it was delightfully warm: in fact it’s quite an intimate space with the buzz of animated conversation lapping around, but at a discreet distance. We were barely through the door when Kostas Miliotis (the General Manager) stepped forward to greet us, smiling broadly and making sure we were comfortably seated before he handed us over to a friendly, knowledgeable member of staff who was ready to talk us through the menu, which is impressive. We were spoilt for choice: lobster, crab cakes, pasta dishes, fish, meat and, of course, pizza. Kostas Miliotis is ‘a hands on presence’ in the restaurant, and with carefully chosen, locally sourced produce, beautifully prepared with great flair, he’s definitely created something to get excited about.

My starter, Mushrooms with garlic sauce, was delicious, and we settled down to enjoy a selection of crispy breads with garlic butter, with a generous helping of olives, as the perfect accompaniments. The house red was excellent. Fish soup was one of the specials and I was really tempted, but I needed to focus on the Monkfish wrapped in Parma ham. It’s as good as it gets, and that’s no lie: the slivers of ham (slightly salty and spicy) perfectly complemented the subtle flavour of the fish. My companion chose Bruschetta and goat’s cheese as a starter, which was delightfully refreshing, followed by Pumpkin salad, which was beautifully presented, and had an intriguing combination of flavours. On to the dessert menu, and again the choice was stunning: Tiramisu, Vanilla cheesecake topped with berries, Orange and dark chocolate profiteroles, Pannacotta and my own personal favourite Crème Brulee. It was an enjoyable, sociable evening and we noticed that everyone seemed to be having a great time. Back outside, the driving rain didn’t seem quite so daunting, and we held on to that ‘feel good vibe’ all the way home. Loved it, and it’s not that far from the madding crowd.

HIS & HERS’ SUMMER SANCTUARY
NOVA RESTAURANT, HESWALL
H
is & Hers had an intriguing invitation to visit a restaurant that we already knew by reputation (friends rave about it), and discovered Nova, nestled in a leafy byway of Heswall. It’s a beautiful setting, fairy lights winking in the breeze, set amongst miniature conifers and spring flowers: it feels like a sanctuary in a frantic world. Once inside, there’s an air of understated elegance: Regency striped fabric for the seating, with pale wood flooring, and pale walls: original art-work and beautifully carved wooden sculptures are skilfully displayed throughout; and as one of the owners, Jana, stepped forward to greet us, I sensed this was going to be an amazing experience. Moyo and Jana (husband and wife team) have combined their expertise to cook and serve the best of British cuisine. Moyo is the chef, and there’s a sense of being taken on a culinary journey that begins with sourcing only the best of local produce, (the quality of the meat is breathtaking) and using herbs and vegetables, freshly gathered, to work a particular kind of magic. We needed to make a choice between ‘early doors’ (2 courses, £15.00) and ‘à la carte’ menus: our party decided to mix and match,
WORDS: Jean Hill
because the ‘simply grill’ options on ‘à la carte’ were irresistible to one, whilst ‘early doors’ Braised shin of beef was a traditional choice for another. The first treat was minced pork and foie gras canapés; subtle herby flavours to savour. Watercress soup with potato got a rave review and for something so simple to taste so good requires the best of ingredients. Avocado, pink grapefruit, cucumber, radish and buckwheat (beautifully presented) was my choice for starter and it shook my tastebuds to the core. The mains did not disappoint. The Canon of lamb with smoked aubergine was simply the best lamb I’ve ever tasted (locally sourced and beautifully cooked). The succulent char-grilled chicken had a lovely (I’m guessing honey infused) glaze. The Braised shin of beef, creamed shallots, mushroom, spinach with red wine proved to be a compelling reason to return. Herbs are skillfully used to enhance and complement the flavour of the food. It’s a simple plan, but it’s rarely done this well. Only one of us had room for dessert: the sorbet was a beautifully presented burst of colour and taste. It was a memorable evening full of small pleasures.

EXCEPTIONAL EXPERIENCE WITH ARENA CLUB CLASS
His & Hers finds out why hiring a VIP box at the Echo Arena will take socialising, client entertaining or simply enjoying your favourite acts to the next level.
R
egular readers will know all about Echo Arena’s exciting summer featuring an eclectic mix of big acts via Emma McHarrie’s Entertainment News feature (on p45). What you may not know about is all the work that’s been going on behind the scenes at the venue to make their VIP packages even more enticing. His & Hers was given a behind-the-scenes peek inside one of the Arena’s VIP boxes during Miranda Hart’s recent comedy show at the venue, taking stock of the chic, contemporary redesign. Following a recent refurbishment, the VIP boxes are elegant but understated; the Echo Arena team clearly understand that even if it’s client entertaining you’re using your box for, most clients prefer an informal setting to a formal boardroom layout.

The Echo Arena chose a Liverpool design agency led by Kate Stewart to work on the new concept and SJS Joinery, based in Liverpool city centre, to make the wooden furniture. To reflect the more relaxed interior design style, the Echo Arena has also updated the menu for VIP guests, offering immaculately presented, delicious dishes featuring locally sourced ingredients. Food is provided by inhouse caterers, Centreplate and clients have the option of tailoring their menu to suit guests’ tastes and appetite. I
n hopes of relaxing and unwinding in style, my husband and I decided that a mini break to the captivating city of Chester was in order. After just an hour on the motorway straight after work on a Thursday night, we checked into the quirky Oddfellows boutique hotel, which is located in a highly accessible, vibrant area in the heart of the city centre. This wasn’t the first time we’d been to the hotel as it was also the destination for our ‘mini moon’ just days after our wedding a couple of years ago so we were excited to return. It hadn’t changed. Standing proud in its full glory, the stunningly restored Victorian building certainly manages to cultivate your curiosities about what’s inside from the moment you arrive. As we entered the reception, we were sincerely greeted by the hotel staff. Around us were visions of serenity and playful Alice in Wonderland inspired fantasies.

HIS&HERS TRAVEL The charming floral décor was masked with oversized wildlife imagery, which added to the beautiful bizarreness of the venue. There is even a table attached to the ceiling in one room… The eccentric theme was evident throughout the hotel and our room did not fail to impress. Our open-plan room featured a number of standout features, most noticeably a circular bed. In correlation with the earthy attributes throughout the hotel, the huge room also consisted of rustic wooden beams and tranquil colour palettes. My personal favourite was the nostalgic home touches incorporated within the design, such as the large checked blanket that was draped across our bed, as is resembled those used during classic summer picnics. Another wonderful feature was the divine walk-in rainforest shower, which amplified the tranquillity of the hotel. During our stay, we enjoyed a delicious evening meal at the hotel’s in-house restaurant, The Garden by Simon Radley. To begin our flavoursome feast, I chose the homemade Scallops and my husband had Pannacotta. Following a delightful first-course, I then ate a very different rendition of fish and chips, this being Beer-Battered Cod but with curried peas, and my husband indulged in a succulent Steak Bourguignon. As a result of the fine food and unique gastro environment, our dining experience was certainly one to remember. But the highlight for us in terms of the food offering was the following morning’s full English breakfast, which set us up for the day and concluded our 15 hours at the hotel on a perfect high. Overall, our short-stay was more than we could have possibly imagined (literally) and brought back some very happy memories. The hotel’s fascinating decorative marvels, combined with the staff’s exceptional service really did astound us both yet again. Everything about the hotel wowed us, and for that reason we will definitely return in the near future.
