Editor’s welcome
Summer style issue Welcome
The plan was to fill this issue with fashion stories shot against clear blue skies and barely-there beachwear, creating the kind of high summer edition which is best enjoyed from behind sunglasses while sipping Pimm’s. However, as I dashed between meetings under the shelter of my umbrella, cancelling a series of rained off location shoots, I was finally forced to accept that this season we’ll have to create our own sunshine. Helping us to do just that, the lovely American Apparel team have invited every reader to snap up a free lipgloss worth £10 or a free nail polish worth £7 from their Liverpool ONE store (see p7 for details). Male readers, rest assured there’ll be similar offers for you over the coming months. In the meantime, please feel free to use your voucher to accrue some brownie points with the woman in your life! I hope you’ll enjoy your free treat and am genuinely proud to be working with American Apparel, a company which is vocal in its opposition to sweatshop labour within the fashion industry. Every one of the lipglosses and nail polishes which they’ll be giving away to His & Hers readers has been produced at their LA factory by workers earning a sensible wage. They also happen to look great and I’m looking forward to wearing mine with pride. Other highlights of this issue include our report from Milan’s Salone del Mobile, which I was lucky enough to attend with Ford’s design team this spring. Turn to p18 to find out why this event is one of the only places where you’ll find a brand like Ford exhibiting alongside the likes of Hermès, Louis Vuitton and even Nivea. It really is one of design’s most exciting melting pots and well worth a visit if you get the chance. For the first time, we shot our Street Style pages in Liverpool, London, Manchester, Chester, Milan and LA to give a more rounded view of what everyone’s wearing in our global village. We’re also proud to present our first ever childrenswear shoot from p32. I hope you’ll enjoy this issue and will look out for the next one, which hits the stands in August.

Tomorrow’s Design Icons Today WORDS: EMMA HILL
18
If you want to know what you’ll be wearing next season, go to London, Paris or New York Fashion Week. However, if you want to know what you’ll be wearing, driving and buying for years to come, there’s only one place to go and that’s the Milan Furniture Fair.
His&hers interview
O
nce, the Milan Furniture Fair was simply the most significant date in the design calendar and an uncannily good indicator of how our homes, hotels and bars were about to look. However, that was in simpler times, before ‘design brands’ like Apple ruled the high street. Today, all the key players are vying to show off their design credentials, and they’ve chosen the Milan Furniture Fair as their global stage. This year, brands like Hermès, Marni and Louis Vuitton illustrated that they don’t need a catwalk to dazzle, and last year even Nivea got involved with a high-profile show sponsorship. Reflecting the changing face of the Milan Furniture Fair, when my invitation arrived this year, it didn’t come from the show organisers, or a big furniture brand, it came from Ford, arguably the world’s best known name in car design, as they prepared to show off some rather clever new features for the Eco Sport and to give their own take on furniture design. Having attended the show with my focus firmly on the furniture during my days as an interior design journalist, I couldn’t
resist the opportunity to see it from a fresh perspective in the company of the Ford team. On my first evening in Milan, a cocktail party to showcase the new Ford Eco Sport, with a rather clever new feature which will enable drivers to voice control their smartphone apps, beckoned. At the party, immaculately dressed design journalists posed thoughtful questions about the car’s design before dispersing to sip champagne, feast on Italian delicacies and in some cases hop inside the Eco Sport to check out its design credentials first hand. As Ford is collaborating with Spotify (the leading music streaming service) to bring its music service into the car, guests were invited to contribute to a Spotify playlist for the night, creating an eclectic soundtrack for the evening. The following day, I joined my fellow journalists at the chic Ford Design Lounge within Euroluce, where I’d arranged to meet Martin Smith, Executive Design Director for Ford of Europe and Erika Tsubaki, who deals with design strategy and ‘futuring‘ for Ford Europe, for an informal interview over coffees. Martin explained: “This is a design show which
19
His&hers interiors
happens to be about furniture. The fact that we’re confident enough to showcase here positions us well as a design-driven brand, which is what we aim to be. We’re building the brand through design.” Erika added: “When we were designing the Fiesta, the first interviews we carried out with our young target customers were conducted here in Milan and as designers we come to fairs like this for inspiration, so it was challenging to us as a team to come to the Milan Furniture Fair and challenge ourselves by taking automotive influences into the world of furniture design.” (Ford showcased lighting and furniture designs inspired by their signature style at the show). “Taking automotive influences into the world of furniture is all part of the democratisation of design”, said Martin, adding: “We want to create design which is not polarising or provocative, but which is commercial.” When asked about the challenges of showcasing their brand alongside the giants of the design industry, Martin answered with a quiet confidence (and perhaps just a dash of amusement) declaring: “You could argue that designing a car, with all the people and form filling and legislation involved, is one of the most complex pieces of industrial design!” Perhaps it should come as no surprise that after dealing with such daily challenges, the Ford team seem completely un-phased by showcasing their designs in a fresh context. As journalists begin to gather for their interview slots with Martin and Erika, proving that I’m far from being the only one to be intrigued by Ford’s
20
presence at the Milan Furniture Fair, I say my goodbyes and am promptly met by Marco, the Ford driver who will be transporting me to the airport. The drive flies by as we discuss Italian fashion, style and design. As I board my flight with Marco’s insights and observations fresh in my memory, I can quite see why this is the city Ford chooses when they want to reach out to design lovers. You’ll find style inspiration around every corner and within every car in this city during the Milan Furniture Fair. Pay it a visit if you can – it’s not just for design geeks, I promise!

STREET SMART
Earlier this summer, His & Hers sent our team of style spotters out on to the streets of Liverpool, London, Manchester, Chester, Milan and Los Angeles to find out how you’ve been wearing this season’s key trends.
Bex, 28, Chester
Our women’s style editor, Hester Brodie, chose Bex, a make-up artist, for her ability to mix highstreet and vintage looks and for her simple rock chick styling. This cute jumper is from Monkey in Stockholm and her very OTM footwear’s by Vagabond at Urban Outfitters.
22
Bebe Booth, LA, USA Photographer Daniel MacSween snapped celebrity make-up artist and actress Bebe Booth, striking a pose with a back issue of His & Hers magazine outside LA’s Powder Room. Bebe had opted for a relaxed off-duty outfit in monochrome – perfect for those laid-back LA nights!
Elena, 21, Milan Elena mixed bold florals effortlessly with neutral camel tones for effortless summer style. Pictured on a sun dappled Milan street, Elena teamed a colour pop shirt from Zara with a jacket from Artigianale di Firenze, leggings from Stradivarius and shoes from Bershka.
Lana, 22, Manchester Stylist Kirsty Sian Hollis stopped 22-year-old Retail Manager, Lana, as she was strolling through Manchester. Lana was wearing Ash boots, a Mary Katrantzou top with jeans and jacket from Sandro. Lana looked elegant in her fitted blazer, which she dressed down with jeans and casual boots.
Melissa, 31, Liverpool
One of Liverpool’s leading photographers, Matt Ford, spotted the effortlessly chic Melissa walking through Liverpool city centre wearing a blouse from Hobbs, jumper from Anthropology, jacket from Whistles and skirt from Mango. She accessorised with a bag from Miu Miu.
Pin, 25, London
Our fashion writer Hannah spotted Pin, who’s a student, sporting a relaxed yet feminine look for her shopping trip in the capital. Pin paired patterned jeans from Topshop with a quirky slogan tee picked up in Japan. She added a powder blue Uniqlo blazer and burgundy Tom’s shoes.
Presumptuous? Well someone’s got to be! Don’t forget to pack your sunnies wherever you’re off to this summer. We love these blue and white ‘blossom’ shades. Sunglasses, £17, American Apparel. First on our festival checklist is a pair of beaten up denim shorts. If you’re lucky enough to be attending one of the European festivals, they’re perfect for topping up that tan. Shorts, £26, Bank.
Hester’s looks
No fuss outfits are a must for festivals, and this portaloofriendly playsuit with dungaree style straps is the perfect festival partner. Playsuit, £19.99, Missguided.co.uk.
FESTIV L GUIDE With Glastonbury just weeks away, we’re focusing on the festival season and helping you get organised for a summer of music.
Even if it’s not raining, the number of people on any field means wellies are a must. Invest in these Hunters in black and change your socks to suit your outfit. Wellies, £59.99, Get the Label.
We hate to bring it up, but it’s good to think about security at any festival. This cute leather bumbag from American Apparel will keep your essentials super safe. Bumbag, £38, American Apparel.
Glamping? Then we suggest you invest in a statement cuff. It’ll go with everything and make you feel a bit more dressed up. And at £6 if you lose it in the dancing (and mud!) you won’t be too upset. Cuff, £6, F&F at Tesco.
Let’s be honest, if you’re off to a British festival this summer, the top of the packing list is a waterproof! Mac, £79.95, Whitestuff.

Gwyneth Paltrow’s Feel-Good Factor This summer, Gwyneth Paltrow has launched a new business, promoted her latest film, written a best-selling book ‘It’s All Good’ and somehow made more time for family. We found out how.
W
hen His & Hers last visited Los Angeles, a healthy and glowing Gwyneth Paltrow was opening a new blow-dry bar in the city in between promoting her new book and latest film. This month we take stock of what’s clearly been an eventful summer for one of Hollywood’s most successful actresses. In spring, Gwyneth Paltrow joined forces with world-renowned fitness trainer and long-term friend Tracy Anderson and celebrity hairstylist David Babaii to launch the David Babaii Blow Dry Bar in the city. David Babaii told us: “I am so excited and honoured to join the team as we all share the same devotion to women’s fitness, health, and beauty.” In addition to working with Gwyneth, David has tamed the tresses of Jennifer Lawrence, Nicole Kidman, Kate Hudson, Angelina Jolie, Scarlett Johansson, Emma Stone and Uma Thurman. In the same month that this business launched, Gwyneth began to promote her new cookbook: ‘It’s All Good’, which promises: ‘Delicious, Easy Recipes That Will Make You Look Good and Feel Great’. Some of Gwyneth’s sweet treats which are featured in the book (such as her ‘Favourite Baked Apple’) are absolutely delicious and make a great lighter option to calorie laden snacks during the summer months. And the actress does credit her strict diet and exercise regime with giving her the energy to juggle the demands of family life, promoting Iron Man 3 (in which she returns as
24
Pepper Potts, starring opposite Robert Downey Jnr) and finding time for collaborations like the one with David Babaii. Clearly, we wouldn’t mind that kind of stamina, or Gwyneth’s glowing complexion. However, His & Hers isn’t ready to back away from the bread basket just yet! ‘It’s All Good’ by Gwyneth Paltrow and Julia Yurshen, £20, is published by Sphere.

The New ‘It’ Treatment
His & Hers asked Mr Alex Karidis, one of the UK’s best-known cosmetic surgeons, why Ulthera’s being hailed as the new anti-ageing ‘it’ treatment.
M
r Alex Karidis has a world-renowned practice in St John’s Wood, London, and a chic MediSpa in Liverpool. He believes Ulthera is one of the most exciting non-surgical anti-ageing treatments to have emerged and took some time out of his busy schedule to tell His & Hers why... What is Ulthera? Ulthera is an “uplift”, not a “face lift.” It’s a non-invasive procedure that deposits focused ultrasound energy below the surface of the skin to stimulate the body’s creation of new collagen. As a result, skin will actually begin to lift and tone over time post-procedure. So it works on the décolletage as well as the face? Tell us more... Individuals with moderately deep vertical wrinkles on the chest are ideal candidates for an Ulthera chest or décolletage treatment. The chest is often overlooked in terms of preventative care, overshadowed by the needs of the face. But because the skin on the chest is thinner than that of the face, this area is susceptible to damage from the sun, and “side-sleepers” can be especially prone to chest wrinkles.
26
To achieve the best results, how long before a big event would you need to have this treatment? Optimum result in lifting and collagen boosting will take up to two to three months (as tired collagen is replaced with new, more elastic collagen). As this collagen-building process continues, further improvements can appear up to six months after a procedure, so book in as early as possible when it comes to a big occasion like a wedding! How long do results last? Patients have seen great results after a year’s time following the treatment. However, skin varies when it comes to aging. Some see lengthier results, and results can always be prolonged with top-up treatments. How much does the treatment cost at the Karidis MediSpa, Harvey Nichols? £1,500 for a one-off treatment with Mandie Dransfield. Find out more about Ulthera by visiting Karidis MediSpa at the Harvey Nichols Beauty Bazaar, Liverpool ONE. www.karidis.co.uk/ medispa

Beauty News The House Beauty Spa turns back the clock with one of the UK’s best-selling anti-ageing facials.
C
ACI’s anti-ageing facials have been around for years, but with a host of celebrities like Linda Evangelista recently naming CACI as their ultimate anti-ageing secret, His & Hers decided it was time to take a fresh look at an old favourite. Liverpool’s luxurious House Beauty Spa has recently invested in the latest CACI technology; ‘Combined Non-Surgical Facial Toning & Skin Rejuvenation’ is the result of over 20 years’ research and is widely regarded as one of the most effective anti-ageing treatments available. Combining active micro-current rollers with a ‘Hydro Mask’, a unique electrically conductive silicon gel mask that has been infused with powerful hydrating properties, the rollers gently massage the face causing the mask to become
28
electrically charged. A number of celebs have credited CACI’s antiageing facials with plumping skin and softening deep lines, while making wrinkles, blemishes and stretch marks appear less prominent. Originally developed for treating facial palsy, micro-current therapy is now widely used as an aesthetic anti-ageing treatment. It’s proving increasingly popular with those who want to see noticeable anti-ageing effects without turning to injectables or surgery. Try this if you’re ready for a more hard working facial with the focus firmly on anti-ageing. Emma McHarrie’s Entertainment News I
t’s been a busy time at Echo Arena recently – we welcomed our threemillionth visitor at the Alicia Keys concert at the end of May, with the winner receiving a Golden Ticket entitling them to attend 10 events of their choice over the next 12 months. I can’t believe how quickly time flies – it seems like only yesterday we were opening our doors for the very first time, but this year we’re celebrating our 5th birthday. A number of rock legends have announced Liverpool dates recently – I’m pretty sure that many His & Hers readers won’t have even been born when some of the following big names first started out, but some of the stats from their careers are staggering. If I said to you: ‘49 years in rock & roll, 27 albums, 15 top ten singles, a recent best-seller’, who’d spring to mind? It’s singing sensation Rod Stewart! And there’s great news for fans of his – he’s coming to Echo Arena this September as part of his UK tour. Another one: ‘Which band has spent almost eight years (415 weeks) in the British Singles Chart?’ Any guesses? Well it’s only Status Quo – and they’re coming to Liverpool in December. Other legends that are set to grace the Echo Arena stage this year include Neil Young & Crazy Horse, plus one of rock’s legendary and defining bands, The Who. I met up with 5ive when they were in Liverpool for The Big Reunion – they hadn’t performed as a band in the city before and said after the show that they can’t wait to come back for their own tour in November as they thought the Liverpool crowd was amazing. JLS fans will be in for a sad time in December when the band embark on their Farewell Greatest Hits Tour – make sure you don’t miss your chance to see the boys on stage together for the final time. Have a really great summer and see you again in August.
Top Tip – JLS – 9 December – EchoTwo at the Echo Arena. www.echoarena.com

STREET SMART
For the first time, His & Hers has sent our team of style spotters out on to the streets of Liverpool, London, Manchester, Chester, Milan and Los Angeles to find out how you’ve been wearing this season’s menswear trends.
Kal, 27, Rob, 23, Manchester Chester
Stylist Kirsty Hollis stopped Kal, a store manager, who was looking chic and contemporary wearing Vivienne Westwood in Manchester. He exudes confidence in his very edgy cool day wear. Teaming his boots and kilt with a bold printed T-shirt, Kal shows an original and unique overall style.
Women’s style editor, Hester Brodie, spotted photographer Rob in Chester. Rob’s sleeve does all the talking, so he keeps his outfit simple. A vintage shirt, Levi’s jeans and classic Wayfarer sunnies are classic but stylish and he smartens up his look with suede desert boots.
Nick, 32, London
London-based fashion writer Hannah Ramsay spotted attorney, Nick, looking effortlessly cool in his high street ensemble consisting of a Topshop leather jacket over H&M shirt and Uniqlo jeans. He added some colour with plum suede Kenneth Cole shoes and accessorised with his friend’s sunglasses.
Giovanni, 22, Milan
Editor Elena Tedesco Bardi spotted Giovanni on the streets of Milan. Giovanni has perfected a simple, modern style, teaming classic pieces in muted tones. We liked Giovanni’s shirt and jacket from Aspesi, jeans from Harmont and Blaine and shoes from Belfiore.
Jason Betts, LA
Nic Martin spotted Jason Betts, an aspiring actor and model on a sunny day in LA. We liked his laid-back understated style and choice of a bold blue tee – this is the perfect combo for staying cool as temperatures rise.
Geraint, 30, Liverpool
Leading Liverpool photographer, Matt Ford, spotted Geraint dodging rain showers in a Cos jacket, shirt by Uniqlo, jumper by J Crew, Levi’s jeans, shoes by Paolo Vandini and, of course, that British summer essential, an umbrella by Uniqlo.

Matt & Jayne’s

Jayne’s Must-Haves For Her Jayne road-tests a selection of summer’s best-selling mascaras. Oriflame Volume Build Mascara, £8.45
Jayne Mahon
Topshop Volume Lash Mascara, £10
The small brush with its compact bristles is perfect for creating volume. It’s a good all rounder and if you like a heavier application, then this is what your make up bag has been waiting for.
Origins Gin Zing Brightening Mascara, £15.30
As soon as I opened this product, I noticed that the mascara was distributed evenly along the large bristle brush. I applied it to my lashes and because of the different sized bristles, it really helped to lift every lash right from the root. I love this mascara, which is perfect for creating a groomed and glamorous everyday look.
YSL Baby Doll Mascara, £24.50
The rubber bristles are compact and I have a smile on my face straight away as there is no clumpy product sticking to the wand. The YSL mascara glides onto my lashes with no clumps and no overkill of product meaning you could definitely apply a second coat without the worry of the ‘I need to take off all my make up and start again’ meltdown. I simply can’t find anything that I don’t like about the YSL mascara. It’s my new make-up bag must-have!
Matt’s picture is by ITMcreative/parissawalklett, Jayne’s picture is by Matt Ford, www.mattfordstudio.com
I opened this product with bated breath, then had to remove a little excess mascara from the medium sized brush. This is an affordable mascara which does what it says on the tin. It would make a good addition to a teen’s makeup bag, but wasn’t quite right for me.
Must-Haves
Collinge Art Director Jayne Mahon share their summer wish lists.
Matt’s must-haves for him Google Glass Big things are coming later this year tech-wise; well, big things are always coming, every year. There will be the inevitable flood of new smartphones, new laptops and tablets and other ‘life changing gadgets’. We have come to expect this every year towards the end of summer. New processors get released, everything gets a tiny bit faster and a tiny bit smaller, but this year we’re set to see another fork in the road as ‘wearable computers’ hit the mainstream. This may sound like something from an eighties sci-fi flick but it really is here. The first one that you may already be aware of is Google Glass, the Glass unit is a wearable ‘headset’ of sorts - kind of like a pair of glasses without the lenses. What it does have is a small prism suspended just over your right eye through which, through some optical trickery, you can view a sort of smartphone layout without much loss of vision. It really is incredible (check it out online by searching for Google Glass). It also takes and streams videos and photos, offers search results, shows maps, emails, texts, tweets and most other things that your smartphone currently does. It’s due out early in 2014, but a lucky few - including this writer – will be part of the ‘explorers program’ which means we’ll be the first to use the gadget and feedback directly to Google before its public release. More on that next month.
Matt Littler
Summer Sunnies Ray-Ban foldable Wayfarer (£145 from www.sunglasshut.com)
Moving on to a different type of glasses, unlike Google Glass, these Wayfarers are already available and are immediately useful. With no computers or prisms, all these guys do is keep the sun out of your eyes and help you look good while doing it. Also, because I love a gadget, and I travel a lot, I appreciate the way these Ray-Bans fold up and slip into a tiny case.

LFC’s Gala Awards Dinner His & Hers was proud to attend The Liverpool Former Players Association’s Gala Awards Dinner at the Hilton Hotel in May. The event, sponsored by Carlsberg and Wongs Jewellers, was hosted by Claire Rourke and Matt Critchley from LFC TV and many of the former players were present to honour those receiving awards. Newly enlisted into the Liverpool Legends Hall
of Fame, Jamie Carragher received a standing ovation as he picked up his award for ‘Player of the Decade 2000-2010’.
Andrew Collinge Hairdressing recently played host to the ‘What I See Project’, founded by Edwina Dunn, at their Castle Street salon. The project was launched at the Science Museum in February and then moved to the Women of the World (WOW)
Festival at the Southbank. The ‘What I See Project’ is a global digital art and science project exploring women’s perception and self-expression. The project examines how different experiences shape who we are and how we perceive ourselves and the world around us. The beauty and power behind ‘What I See’ lies in how people express themselves and the ability to explore and compare these perspectives across age, location and other factors. Whether it is through video, imagery, written text or tweets, this is a community project you help create through the power of your voice along with the voices of others across the world - a collection of individual points of view that grows and changes with your participation. The evening in the salon included contributions from women who were filmed for the website. The project includes about 500 films from 11 countries in four continents which can be accessed at: www. whatiseeproject.com

Tracey, who is CEO of the White Teeth Company has also been celebrating a recent decision by the GDC to allow patients to book in with a hygienist without a prescription or referral from a dentist.
Tracey commented: ‘’Direct access in the United Kingdom can only improve oral health. In the past access to a dental hygienist or therapist was only via the dentist which in many ways prevented access. Dental hygienists are an imperative part of the team.”

Celebrating the
‘Femme Fatale’ Dress I
t was Elizabeth Taylor who first made the white slip the ultimate in seductive dressing. Sleek and streamlined, it created a look that is now part of cinematic and fashion history. Now today’s fashionista is always on the lookout for a piece to stay ahead of the style crowd, and this season the vintage slip dress is a chic, prized wardrobe addition. This summer, leading vintage retailer Femme Fatale expects to see demand for vintage slip dresses soar. They offer slips as part of a large online lingerie range, all of which is personally sourced by owner, Christine Eden, who says, “I have always loved vintage, and every modern fashion icon, from Kate Moss to Cara Delevingne, uses vintage pieces to create an individual look.” There are two ways of styling the slip dress, and the first is the ultra-glam Rita Hayworth way, with a modern twist, to create that Hollywood siren look.
20
Team your slip dress with retro-style shoes, a lace bolero, a classic clutch and a stunning headpiece to complete your LA starlet ensemble. This look will make you stand out from the crowd whether at a wedding or a day at the races. The second way to style your slip dress is to channel Daisy Buchanan. Now that The Great Gatsby has hit the big screen everyone has gone 1920s crazy. The slip dress is the starting block of the look. Add some classic patent ankle band shoes to add sophistication, a jewelled hair piece, Art Deco-style earrings and a box clutch. This look is perfect for evening with its easy glamour and flapper-girl appeal. Vintage slips available online now at www. Femme-Fatale.co.uk

As wedding season began, His & Hers took a tour of one of the city’s perennially popular wedding venues, Hard Days Night.
et within a classical 1880s building with a sophisticated interior design scheme, Hard Days Night has always been a popular choice for couples planning a stylish wedding or civil partnership in the heart of Liverpool. Wedding and Events manager Marian Cotter said: “We are such a unique venue that we are finding a lot more couples are choosing us to host their weddings and civil partnerships rather than the more traditional venues. ‘Although we are a Beatles-inspired hotel, the Beatles ‘theme’ is reflected with subtlety throughout the décor of the four-star, Grade II listed building. There are no in-your-face gimmicks here, just a chic, modern city centre venue with a twist.’ Marian added: “Hard Days Night Hotel prides itself on doing the utmost to ensure couples have the most incredible wedding day. The hotel offers a range of wedding packages to suit all wedding sizes and budgets.

“Included in all of the wedding packages is professional advice from the hotel’s experienced and friendly wedding and events team, room hire, linen, table decorations and special guest accommodation rates.” For more information or to request a copy of Hard Days Night’s wedding brochure, email: events@harddaysnighthotel.com or call +44 (0) 151 236 1964 and choose option 4.

His&hers TRAVEL
His & Hers’ Long-Haul Must-Visit:
CABO
Prepare to fall in love with Cabo San Lucas with its miles of pristine beaches and crystal clear seas.
W
hile the His & Hers team was spending late spring dodging rain showers and, on one notable occasion, hail stones, we caught up with a travel writer friend who offered to fill our pages with virtual sunshine by checking out Cabo, one of Mexico’s best loved luxury travel destinations. Choosing the legendary Hacienda Beach Club and Residences (a firm favourite with Hollywood royalty ever since the likes of John Wayne, The Rat Pack and Raquel Welch first discovered this gem almost 50 years ago) our reviewer opted to stay in a luxurious beach-front villa for three. Travelling with a researcher and photographer, he made the most of the expansive, and attractively decorated, living area to conduct a celebrity interview or two during his stay. However, with a dazzling array of infinity pools, private Jacuzzis, beautiful unbroken sea views and world-renowned fine dining all to be found at Hacienda, this was never going to be a gruelling work trip! Hacienda has Cabo’s top-rated restaurant and His & Hers would highly recommend opting for al-fresco dining at the resort; with idyllic views and such a
50
kind climate, it’s hard to spend too much time indoors here! Specialities include Mexican-style dishes blended with freshly caught fish from the Sea of Cortez. Then, when the sun sets, DK’s Bar is renowned for its hand-muddled Mojitos, making this paradise location even nicer. If, like most people who find themselves in Cabo, you’re seeking rest and relaxation, The Hacienda Spa is well worth visiting. Outdoor relaxation lounges with their attractive water features and pools provide the perfect setting for spa treatments, but if you’re feeling so laid back that even the walk from your room to the relaxation lounge sounds a little too much like hard work, treatments are also available within the residences. Cabo has been a firm favourite with American tourists for decades, but it’s only relatively recently that this hidden gem has come to the fore as a luxury travel destination from the UK. His & Hers would recommend adding Cabo to your travel wish-list post haste. Book early if possible, as the Hacienda books up quickly in high season, and don’t forget to try one of those famous Mojitos while you’re there. www.haciendacabosanlucas.com

Getting There
H
is & Hers travelled with BA, who have direct flights from London to Cabo. As the journey is fairly formidable (taking just over 11 hours), if budget allows, BA’s Club World (long-haul business class) flights are one of the more comfortable ways to travel. Thanks to the fully flat beds, you can sleep in comfort, and there’s a generous amount of leg-room. The food and service is impeccable and the Galleries Lounge at Heathrow Airport really comes into its own before or after long-haul journeys like the one to Cabo. Taking their interior design inspiration from five star boutique hotels, BA have created a chic space in which to relax before or between flights. His & Hers was particularly impressed by the Galleries Lounge’s Elemis Travel Spa, where you can take a refreshing shower in one of 20 spacious shower rooms, or book in for a pampering treatment. All of these thoughtful touches will help to make your flight part of the relaxed, indulgent Cabo experience, ensuring that you begin and end your trip on a high note. www.britishairways.com

Cinema Supper Club at The Exchange His & Hers was offered a front row seat (and popcorn, of course) at the launch of the Hilton’s new Cinema Supper Club.
E
arlier in the summer, Liverpool’s Hilton Hotel unveiled their new dining concept, ‘Cinema Supper Club at The Exchange’. We liked the retro-chic restaurant makeover, featuring a big screen onto which images from classic films are projected from Thursday to Sunday evenings. At the Cinema Supper Club launch, popcorn was served as guests sat down to dinner and cinemastyle torches were given out to aid in the reading of menus. To complete the theme, oversized sweetie jars spilling over with treats were available for those seeking a little post-dinner indulgence. The cinematic influence gives a simple and enjoyable twist to the dining experience at the
54
Hilton and doesn’t overwhelm. His & Hers dined with friends, ordering a mixture of succulent steaks and saintly salads. Every dish was tasty and reasonably priced. After dinner, we stayed at our table for a while to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and to sip a few glasses of wine. We’ve returned to the Cinema Supper Club since and have noticed that the Hilton’s restaurant seems busier throughout the week since being given a dash of silver screen glamour. We’d recommend the Cinema Supper Club to those who like themes at a hotel or restaurant to be subtle and sophisticated. Puschka Restaurant and Home Canteen & Bar This summer, His & Hers visited two very different venues with the same excellent food: Puschka on Rodney Street came first and is now well established, so Home Canteen & Bar (Beetham Plaza) is an inspired new venture to spread the joy of fresh, locally sourced produce cooked to perfection. WORDS: Jean Hill
H
is & Hers had an invite to a North West Cancer Research bash at Home Canteen & Bar and we arrived feeling quite excited to be part of an evening enjoying good company, delicious food, great entertainment , and to be a part of raising funds for cancer research. We’d recommend Home for a special event: it was a relaxed, fun evening and the food was beautifully presented and tasted totally fresh with that clarity of flavours you want to linger over. There’s a great retro bar with 2 for 1 Happy Hour cocktails to be had between 5 and 7pm every day. I enjoyed it all so much I missed the last train home. Check it out. There’s a warm welcome awaiting you. Puschka sets the tone before you step inside, with a cast iron gateway and a row of impeccably planted hanging baskets. It’s been described as Bohemian. though we’d describe it as understated elegance in very comfortable surroundings. It was a perfect, warm, sunny, early evening and we basked in gentle sunlight in the window seating. There is a choice of menus, but we settled for the early evening menu: 3 courses, £19.90 per person, with a complimentary glass of wine - great value. Broccoli soup, with almond soda bread, was superb; the small tin loaves are priceless. The Root Vegetable Gateau (crafted from walnuts, blue cheese and vegetables) was a particular favourite. The new potatoes (roasted) had a sharply satisfying, fresh from the earth taste. The desserts got rave reviews and the home-made biscuits are a nice touch. There’s a friendly welcome, a great mix of diners with the buzz of folk enjoying themselves. It was a charmed evening of fine dining. Puschka, Rodney Street. Italian Charm at Prego Tucked away in a quiet corner of Chavasse Park, Prego has gradually been establishing itself as the best place to go when you want something a little more sophisticated than a picnic on the grass.
L
ocated between Chaophraya and One Park West and overlooking Chavasse Park, Prego is a little further off the beaten track than most of Liverpool ONE’s restaurants. However, its quiet location isn’t without its benefits. Regular customers know that this is one of the few places in the city where you can dine outside in peace and tranquillity and soak up the sunshine which hits Prego’s terrace throughout the day. Although when Prego first opened, the restaurant was best known for serving classic Italian dishes, attracting an evening crowd, the owners are now working hard to ensure that their lunchtime and early evening menus are just as enticing. When His & Hers paid a visit to Prego recently, the restaurant was serving up tasty pizza and pasta dishes for just £5.95 at lunchtime. This is the kind of simple, unpretentious fare relying on good quality ingredients that you could enjoy at any time of the
56
day, and the modest price tag makes it a guilt-free lunch-break treat. If you want to avoid the obvious Italian options, it’s worth taking a look at the specials board, which is updated daily. Look out for new options like the restaurant’s tasty gourmet burgers with all the trimmings. Admittedly, they’re not what this restaurant is best known for, but they’re already becoming one of Prego’s most popular dishes with diners seeking barbecue-style food to enjoy in the sunshine. Prego’s ‘Early Doors’ menu, featuring three courses for just £14.95, is also well worth trying and is the best way of getting the full Prego experience without blowing the budget. And if you mention that you’re a His & Hers reader while dining in Prego this June or July, staff will treat you to a free glass of Prosecco – sounds good to us! Bierkeller’s Summer Drinks Offering I
t’s been hard to miss Bierkeller’s swift progression to becoming one of Liverpool’s most popular venues. The bar may have opened a mere six months or so ago, but the large venue is already packed out on virtually every night of the week. The company’s area manager acknowledged that Bierkeller’s keenly priced and extensive beer list, teemed with modestly priced bar snacks, plays no small part in their success. However, they’re also at pains to point out that they’re no one trick pony. Those seeking Steins and perhaps a dash of entertainment
You probably know Liverpool ONE’s Bierkeller best for their extensive beer list. However, as one of the city’s busiest bars, they’re keen to show that they have more to offer than their famous Steins.
courtesy of a traditional Oompah band will not be disappointed. However, if you pay Bierkeller a visit during quieter times, there’s also fun to be had checking out a few of the cocktails, spirits and wines on offer here. Bierkeller is one of the few Liverpool bars which doesn’t feel a little too quiet early in the week and if it’s laid-back drinks with friends, without any fear of a bar bill that will ruin the relaxed vibe, that you want then this venue is well worth a visit.
